Excellent fried chicken, crispy with a great batter. Sides tasted fresh and were homemade. The bread pudding was very good. A couple of unique touches... Menu written on a brown paper bag, and when an item was no longer available, they crossed it out. Beverages served in large mason jars. Very much a family restaurant.

Ok, this is going to be a crazy review, but my true experience. The food is good and enjoyable, prices are getting a little out of hand for a plate lunch establishment. The problem is the "attitude" you get from the owners, or manager. He acts as if he's doing you, the customer, a favor by serving you. There are times during the lunch service when the waitresses are trying their best, but get behind, he stands there walks around looking all important, but never offers to help. They only open for lunch and the attitude by the support staff is that they are there to grab as much money as possible during the lunch window, not the waitresses, they are the only nice ones there. I guess I'm trying to say they've lost focus of the ones that got them there, the customers.

My wife and I used to eat here a lot and the food was decent and it's close to our neighborhood. Recently I went to pick us up 2 to-go lunches. I walk in, pay and get my bag with 2 to go plates. Why wouldn't I think that one plate was mine and the other my wife's? But No, not the case. One plate had '2' orders of chicken. More like 1 and 1/2 and the other plate had one order of each vegetable we ordered. (We ordered the same vegetables). So basically they gave me an order and a half of fried chicken and that's being generous. And ONE order of each vegetable. Umm... No, I paid for TWO to go plates not 3 pieces of chicken and one order of vegetables. I wanted to call and let these people know how I felt about it but my wife talked me out of it. 26 dollars for that!! Needless to say we wont be back.

Had dinner at this unique little place with some family. Of all the good fried chicken in the Jackson area, theirs may be the best. The vegetables were nice and fresh. They have a desert they call 'My Mama's Pie' that is out of this world. As someone else said, the menu is handwritten daily on brown paper bags. Good stuff.

I've been eating at Fannin Mart ever since I was in high school (I am 30 years old now). Back then they were located in their old location where it was really homey, old-fashioned, and the food was way better. They still have their same rituals with Mason jar drinks, bread pail (cornbread and rolls in a metal pail) and paper bag menus which are always a unique and creative touch that I love. I usually order the same thing every time I go. Last weekend, on a Sunday, I ordered a fried breast and leg, cabbage slaw, green beans, turnip greens, yams, and unsweet tea. I also tried some of my friend's Berry Cream Cheese Pie, Irish potato casserole, and "roast beef". First off, their prices have gone wayyyy up from back in the day. Of course, I understand for inflation but in my opinion, for the quality, $13 is way too much and I am no cheapskate either. I am a FOODIE and experienced cook so I critique kind of harshly. And even though I am Asian, I was raised in the South and had many mentors from young and old so I know how Southern cooking is supposed to taste. Unsweet Tea: It was okay. I've had better tea and I like my tea to taste like tea. The huge Mason jars are a plus though. I took a sip of my friend's sweet tea, nothing to rave about. I do like that their tea is dark (not like colored water) but for some reason, it doesn't taste dark (strong). * Cabbage Slaw: It was flavorful, fresh and crunchy, and cold. * Yams: It was yummy, maybe a tad too much sugar but it was still good. * Green beans: They were flavorful but you can definitely tell that they put sugar in their green beans which most southern cooks do but I personally don't. * Turnip greens: They were okay. They were indeed from scratch but I think it lacked a little flavor. * Fried chicken: This is my biggest disappointment. The chicken looked rather small (at least in our basket). The breast looked like a thigh (size-wise) and all of the chicken pieces looked "dark"--i.e. fried too long or in old oil. The taste was good but it was not like I remembered back in the day. My friend's wing looked so puny that it could've came from a baby chicken, lol. * Irish potato casserole is ALWAYS and STILL IS good. Maybe one of my favorite sides overall. The roast beef was not what I expected. It was more like dry pot roast. * Roast beef and pot roast are NOT the same things. Pot roast is that stringy beef that comes from a shoulder roast, a chuck roast, or cross rib roast, all originating from the front part of the cow. It takes a slow, moist roast very well and falls tenderly apart as soon as you remove it from its broth. Roast Beef has a steak like texture and will stand firmer when sliced and comes from cuts like round sirloin tip, eye of round and London broil. -Hence, Fannin Mart is serving pot roast, not "roast beef". * The Berry Cream Cheese Pie would've been awesome if it was COLD. It came out warm and borderline melting. Maybe it was because the air was not working properly that day. In conclusion, it is an "ok" place to eat and great place to spend time with family and friends .

I was in the Flowood area so I decided to try the fried chicken, and I truly did enjoy it along with a side of the field peas. I will be returning with my husband. Hey mac and cheese would've made my meal just like at grandma's house. I still felt the love from the dishes I did choose.
