So I made my way over here to find out I was 10 minutes late and they were closed. I tapped on the glass but the lady inside said sorry. Deflated, I shuffled back to the car to fiddle with Yelp to find the next best bbq within a reasonable distance. After messing around with the phone for about 10 minutes, the lady saw that I was still parked outside. She felt bad and came out to ask what I wanted. I said thank you but its ok. She insisted. I said I'm open for anything. She prepared me a wonderful sample platter. Of course I over ordered as I felt bad for keeping her and the cook past closing. Always a bad thing to do to restaurant people. The platter consisted of 6 ribs (awesome) brisket (great), pulled pork (ok), coleslaw (ok), baked beans (pleasant) and 2 slices of bread. Throw in a tub sized soda all for $16 and I was set. Great food, but her kindness in feeding a hungry traveler in a strange land made me a fan for life. Rib Shack - In!

Oh my. This place is a diamond in the rough located in a dinky strip mall right by 65 and Chestnut. I went for lunch on a Tuesday and was very happy with my chopped brisket sandwich. The BBQ sauce is very flavorful and thick- not like water as some styles have. The lady working up front was super sweet and took care of customers like family. We will be back!

The worst experience I have ever had a restaurant. I have never been treated so rudely. When I tried to use a voucher bought from a local radio station, the owner refused service and threatened to call the cops. Unbelievable! :( Will never visit again!

Went yesterday hoping to find some great ribs. Ordered the half slab with two sides and a drink. Paid a little over $20. What was served were ribs that seemed like they like they had been reheated from a few days ago. There was quite a bit of fat on them as well. These were not as good as ribs at chain restaurants, which is not a good thing in my opinion. Good ribs need no sauce I believe. These needed sauce to try to take my mind off the fact that these seemed like they came from the crockpot the weekend before. The fried okra was great. The cole slaw was not something I liked at all. The drink allowed for one refill. The people I went with got pulled pork sandwiches and fries, which they really liked a lot. If there is a next time for me I guess I'll go with that.

It's the Applebees of BBQ...they are all over the place. Good sweet tea and of course Pork Ribs (St Louis and Baby Back) are what's to eat. Crispy French fries, fall of the bone ribs and several sauces to punch up your BBQ. Handy and functional.

Best ribs in town! This place is ran by great people that remember their customers and the prices are amazing!

We walked in and the smell of the cleaner was so overwhelming it almost knocked us out. This was on a Friday evening, around 5:30. It was just my son and I, if my wife had been with us we would've turned around and walked out immediately. She would not of lasted 10 seconds. My son and I ordered and after you've been in there for a few minutes the cleaner smell kind of dissipates. Never to the point where you can actually smell any food, and that made the entire experience somewhat disappointing. I had a pork sandwich, and there was a ton of meat on it. It was really quite good. My son had the catfish, which he loves, and it was pretty good. He said he would go back on another day. So for the food we would give it a four star, but with the cleaning smell it has to be downgraded to three stars. Possibly that's unusual, but it was well before closing time so they could've waited to start the cleanup.

This place is unbelievable. We were traveling through from St. Louis, and decided to stop here for lunch. It's a bit off the beaten path but it had great reviews, so we gave it a shot. Had the rib dinner special for $9. I was expecting a small portion for the special price, however I was way wrong! Huge portion of fall off the bone pork ribs, potato salad, cole slaw and Texas toast. Ribs were perfectly cooked, and the house sauce to go with it was incredible. Asked for a hot sauce to try, they don't carry a normal one but the owner was happy to make up a special hot sauce that was incredible! Lady in the front was super friendly!! Even gave me a hug before I left! This was a great experience for my friends and myself and I will be definitely be stopping by again!

Worst food/customer service/atmosphere, and to top it off price was way too high for fatty ribs and rude service

HURRY QUICK!!! We traveled from Upstate New York to Missouri to visit family in Springfield. Stopped in St. Louis to see niece first and check out the famous ribs at Pappy's there. Simply amazing ribs. When we reached Springfield, The Rib Shack was on our "definite to try list"as it is family owned, not just a franchise. As we met with co-owner, we explained our "best of" ribs search, she was one of most open, down-to-earth people we ever met. She offered us a frenzy of various bbq food samples to try while we waiting for our order. Out of this world. We left with dinner to-go and 3 full racks to take to North Carolina to visit other in-laws. Their response was that nothing compares to these "fall off the bone ribs" and sauce. Co-owner said sadly, they will be closing shortly due to lack of business. Visit them soon so you don't miss out on these fabulous food. If enough of you do so, maybe they will be able to stay open. SIMPLY OUTSTANDING!!!!! Ron Sherrill, NY

This is a little spot right off 65 on Chestnut. It's somewhat close to Petra, the soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and tennis courts. It's in a strip shopping center. The tablecloths are red and white checkered plastic. There is a TV and sports trivia on the walls. Simple decor. The employees obviously own the store and they are courteous and attentive. I like that. The BBQ is good and moderately priced. I think the okra is dropped in a basket into oil instead of being skillet-cooked, but to be fair, almost every single restaurant makes fried okra this way now. And I will say that their okra is less oily than Lamberts. The servings are ample!

If you like tender, falling-off-the-bone ribs, this is your place. The dry rub is pretty mild, but that let's the flavor of the meat really take over. This is a little hole-in-the-wall kind of place, but it was neatly kept and an absolute gem. The lady behind the counter was friendly and engaging while making it clear that you should sit wherever there was an open spot regardless of whether you knew the other people sitting there or not!

A great little barbecue place, with friendly people and fast service. They offer ribs and a variety of sandwiches; I have only had their beef brisket and "Big Shack" (brisket + hot link) sandwiches, but these are excellent. Their beef is moist and tender, not dried out; their sauce is nicely spicy. The sandwich comes with a pickle and bag of chips; they could have better chip selection but as good as the sandwiches are I am not inclined to complain. The indoor dining area is fairly small, but they do carry-out and catering on request. Prices are reasonable for what you get; $5 for a pretty fair-sized sandwich plus chips. They can have them ready quickly, too; I phone from work and by the time I get down there five to ten minutes later, the food is ready for me to pick up. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, but closes early Saturdays and is not open at all on Sundays and Mondays. By the way, DO NOT TRUST THE MAP to the upper right. Rib Shack is nowhere near National; it is much farther east--about two blocks east of Cedarbrook, near Prince Lane.

Best BBQ in Springfield, easily. Gotta get the Rib dinner. All the sides are awesome, sauce is delicious, and Jenny will make you feel like royalty.

Great food and the sweetest people. The only place in town for Memphis style bbq.

Ate there this evening for the 1st time. Not bad; however, would be much better if the meat was smoked. The ribs were very tender, but I was disappointed that they did not have the smoked flavor. The lady who served us was very friendly. My wife said the potato salad was good. I found the coleslaw pretty good but the mayonnaise dressing was too thick...I prefer the more milky dressing for cole slaw. Some have written that this is the "best BBQ in Springfield" -- if that is the case, then a sad commentary on cuisine in Springfield.

Times eaten-1 Went here for lunch upon Chris M.'s recommendation. I had the half rib platter and the lady had the pork sandwich. Both were nicely smoked, and tender for the most part (one of my ribs was a bit tough, while the others were perfect). You also get a ton of food for the price. The pork came on a big, toasted bun and I got 6 big ribs. It indeed is a small and cozy place, with a wonderfully nice big-momma serving, who tends to the customers. I would trade her for my own mom in a second! They also have some other choices instead of bbq, like jumbo shrimp and catfish. Definitely a better experience than Crosstown or Buckingham's.

This place was close to my work so I thought I would give it a try. I am from KC so I love my BBQ. Let me tell you, this place stacks up with all the best places in KC. Their ribs and sandwiches are to die for and the meat is prepared perfectly. The fresh hot BBQ sauce tops off the ever so tender beef or pork. I can't get enough of this place and I am so glad I stopped in that day! There is not much room inside but it makes for a cozy experience and the owners know you by name. They are always packed and if you are in a hurry you can fax or phone in your order. Don't forget to check out the daily specials because you will definitely find a dish you will love each day!

Best BBQ in Springfield. Best place you never heard of. This "hole in the wall" has that family feel and everything is great. Rib Shack beats any other BBQ you may have seen on commercials. Their brisket is my personal fav.
