Up until last week Couzins' was fine which is why they are getting two stars instead of of one... But, last Wednesday, March 11th, I called to place an order for a family meal which I usually do at least twice per month on Thursdays. A guy answered and when I stated that I would be using the Couzins coupon card for the free 1lb of fish w/ a family meal order he said verbatim, "I don't know what you're talking about, but go ahead". I was very surprised at not only such a blunt/rude response, but also because the value card is THEIR card which THEY sell and we've bought several over the last year. I was confused as to why he suddenly acted as though he didn't know what I was referring to and started describing the card in an effort to remind him and to be sure that we wouldn't have a problem getting the free 1lb of fish. He then stated that he was new. Upon realizing it wasn't the owner I decided to forgive the rudeness, ignorance and lack of proper training and proceeded with my order. When my husband went to pick up the order he was informed that there was only enough okra for an individual order. I was annoyed at not being told that when I ordered or at least called back, but went ahead & selected fries in place of the okra. That made it take even longer. When he got home with the food I took a small piece out to eat and found it to be tough. THEN I noticed there were only two containers when there are usually total of 5= 3 containing 1lb of per container and 2 of family sized sides. The convenience of ordering was out the window and having hungry children to feed before bedtime for school the next morning, we decided to just return the food and get a refund. It ended up taking him much longer than I expected since we live within 5 minutes of Couzins. My husband said that when he went back the lady owner was there and she not only contested the overcooking of the fish, but also the accuracy of the order AND to top it of she weighed the food and accused us of taking 10 pieces of fish! She explained that they include end pieces of fish (which they don't weigh) which are smaller and tougher that the bigger pieces. I can accept that as possibly being the case since I usually eat the long pieces. However, accusing us of stealing 10 pieces of the fish was completely unacceptable! We have patronized this business for at least a year (-- actually more than a year since we used to visit their 87th & Blue Ridge location until it suddenly and without warning shut down) and have never made a complaint. Even when our food is NEVER ready when we arrive to pick it up. Even when the male owner told me I couldn't use my new coupon card the same day I bought it I didn't argue that the lady had always done it-- I just paid my $55 and took my food and new card and went home. Even the time the fish was salty. Even when it was undercooked one time. We forgave those instances and continued to give them our business. Anyway, regarding the order she claimed that the reason we had fewer boxes was because the new guy packed it wrong-- there was some fish mixed in with the fries. I find it hard to believe that 3 pounds of fried catfish and 2 family sides suddenly fit into 2 containers. I considered calling the lady to inform her of the rudeness/lack of people skills/poor customer service/need of proper training of her new helper, as well as my extreme disappointment in being accused of petty theft after spending hundreds of dollars at her business, but decided to just let it go... along with my patronage. In the future, I'll resume buying my catfish from the grocer and frying it at home.

I've been hearing from friends that there is competition for the best Catfish in Raytown Missouri and today I decided to check out Couzin's Fish and Chicken for myself for a carry-home lunch. I am so impressed with the Catfish that I just had to give them a shout out! The catfish fillets are scrumptious. The cornmeal breading was light, crunchy and absolutely grease free. Even the ones that I ate cold this evening still managed to retain some of the crunch they had while hot. My friends are right: Couzin's Catfish is great! I ordered a couple of sides with my meal and got a side of fries as well. Hubby liked the fries and I thought the coleslaw was very tasty. However, I cannot give the same endorsement of the Red Beans and Rice. I really love Red Beans and Rice and like the way that several local restaurants put them together. But Couzin's version is different than any I've had before. There was an almost sweet quality and I could pick up a hint that seemed to be cinnamon, which just was not what I was looking for. I like my Red Beans and Rice to be savory and also enjoy a little bit of heat. So the Couzin's Beans & Rice didn't hit the spot with me and I am withholding that five-star rating. I was in about 1:30 p.m. and the kitchen was out of the green beans so, something tells me that next time I go in for The Best Catfish fillets in Raytown, I will just order a different side and be one very satisfied customer. The building has been revamped from it's former tenant and has a streamlined look with marble top tables and cushioned benches lining the area under the windows where you can wait in comfort for your carryout orders. They even have a small table with a few hand held electronic games for the easily bored. And there are some country touches here and there to kind of cozy up the space. The counter employees are friendly, helpful and all had a smile and cheerful attitude. Be sure and tell them it's your first time in and they will probably bring out a sample of the catfish fillet for you to nibble while you order. Couzin's Catfish is close to my house and I think we are going to be seeing a lot of each other this Lent! Just call me Couzin Carol when my order is ready and I'm there.

I already know the food is great. But the service is slow tonight. It's worth the wait.

The catfish was delicious. We ordered two dinners...one pound and 1/2 pound of catfish. If we had known that their portions are large, then we would have only ordered one pound of catfish. We did carry out and will do so again, so we don't have to wait for our food.

New to the area fresh from Cali I just had to try Couzin's Catfish here in Rayrown. I was not that impressed. The catfish was so salty it burned the top of my mouth! The hushpuppies were over cooked too. I would recommend Lutfi's Fried Fish in Raytown.

The customer service is awesome. People friendly and very responsive. Food preparation takes a little while, but is definitely worth the wait! I will continue to keep coming back
