I went here last night for the first time - and I won't be going back! The service was horrible! We are continually passed by and stared at by our waitress while she served and continually checked in on other tables. The food was okay, nothing spectacular. Same with the margaritas - overpriced for what it was! Don't waste your time. Go somewhere else where they will actually acknowledge your business & you'll get better food!

We checked this place out on Cinco De Mayo of all days. I must say it was very good in my book. My wife raved about it more than me which is rare. I had the fish taco.....again.....they were flavorful with a good amount of fish. Service was surprisingly good despite the big celebration going on out the back. We'll be back.

I had previously lived in Kirkwood for about a year and a half and never made it to amigos. When I went there for the first time yesterday I regreted it! The margarita was fantastic, made with agave nectar. I also had the shrimp tacos and they were so delicious and well portioned. My only compliant is that it was a little more expensive than I thought it would be, but the food more than made up for it.

Fresh & Delicious. If you're looking to order the #76 combo plate covered in processed mystery cheese, this is not your place.

Not outrageously expensive, but still a nicer mexican place that. The queso dip is very good, as are the enchiladas. They have a decent amount of vegetarian options as well. The nachos, which are only an appetizer, are huge and definitely enough for a meal (covered in the aforementioned queso!). Great desert options too, pretty traditional, but good!

Like the decor, food is so so.. It's very Americanized Mexican food, The bus staff were hovering around our table waiting to clear table even though they had plenty of empty tables available for seating.. We felt rushed.. Overall I can't really recommend..

Our favorite restaurant in Kirkwood. A bit pricey for Mexican, but it's worth it. Margs are best in town

Not bad for St. Louis. I had the Meat Lovers Enchiladas and the pork was my favorite. The salsa that comes with the chips had a nice bite to it and the chips were so so. The traditional mexican margarita did not dissapoint. The person that took me here was concerned that I would not like it, because I live in Texas. Will come back...

I was really hoping the food would be good since most of the lower star reviews were based upon service not the food. I should have known better. Yes, the service was slow and the salsa that came with the chips was almost like colored/flavored water. I should have gotten up and left then but I was still hopeful the food would be better. Silly me. The beef enchiladas reminded me of the shredded beef you get in the tubs at the grocery store. The beans had a dull finish like they had been made days before, and the red sauce looked more like a fondant on the surface than a sauce. Not good. The poblano chile relleno has a cheese sauce that had the consistency of dairy that had expired and was starting to form curds in it. Disgusting. The only thing that was decent was the guac. It's a shame we didn't come for just drinks and guac as we probably would have provided and entirely different review. It wasn't as good as any tableside prepared guac, but it was better than we've had at some other places. There are plenty of places in town to get Mexican food and sadly I would have preferred almost any of them including El Maguey which should tell you more than you want to know.

Very disappointing place in such a prime spot. My husband and I have tried to find good Mexican food since leaving the city and so far we haven't found anything remotely close to what we're used to. My fish tacos were very boring and my husbands fajitas didn't even come out on a sizzling plate. They were on a cold plate!

We moved to Kirkwood a year ago and Amigos Cantina has been our go to place for date night ever since. The margaritas are amazing and strong, but if you're feeling something a little different both of their sangrias are delicious as well! I have never been disappointed in the food or the service. My boyfriend loves fajitas and was surprised when they were not served on a sizzling pan, but really that's just a regular tex mex gimmick. He has ordered both steak and chicken fajitas again and again. We can also recommend the quesadillas, enchiladas, nachos, and tacos. The salsa is spicy and slightly sweet. I prefer a little more garlic and cilantro, but it's free so who cares. The regular cheese dip is creamy and more complex than at a regular Mexican place. All delicious. The quality of the food and drinks reflect the price well. This place is perfect for dinner, but they also have happy hour specials Monday through Thursday if you just want drinks. We bring our friends and family here all the time. It can get crowded, but we've only had to wait once or twice for a table. I can't comment on the parking because we walk here from our house. We are usually too stuffed for dessert, but the fried cheesecake and cinnamon ice cream sounds incredible. One day...

My husband and I ate here with our daughter one evening and were seated quickly. Unfortunately, we felt very rushed throughout the entire dinner. Our food came 5 minutes after we ordered and the bill seemed to come an additional 5 minutes after that. I realize that seating is limited but we would like some time to actually enjoy eating our food. And as for the food, it wasn't anything special. Prices seemed a little on the expensive side for what you received. My husband ordered fajitas as he usually does but noted that he received significantly less than other places and the quality wasn't any better. I ordred tacos and they were mediocre at best. Feeling rushed to leave, I accidently forgot my leftovers on the table on the way out. We had only made it about 20 feet outside the door when I remembered before I turned around. I was very surprised that upon returning not more than 2 minutes later that my food had already been thrown out! The second time we attempted to eat here was a bust. We arrived at 5:00 and there was only one other party that needed to be seated ahead of us. We were told the wait would be about 20 minutes. After waiting for over 40 minutes with a very patient 2 year old, we left for home. We will not be returning. Ever.

Get there early or be prepared to wait but it is worth the time. The service is really good, as are the drinks. I love their Stuffed Poblano Chile. A flavorful combo of shredded chicken, raisins, walnuts, and spices topped with a goat cheese sauce. I skipped the rice & black beans (I prefer pinto) on my plate because the pepper was so good. The only down side for me is their salsa lacks flavor.

When I want fresh Mexican cuisine I come to Amigos. The place is always packed and for good reason. THEY HAVE GREAT FOOD! For example I ordered for the first time this past Saturday their Fajitas. Fresh marinated chicken and very yummy strips of steak. I wanted it hot so they brought out their Habanero salsa which was fabulous and carried enough to heat to keep it interesting! They have a good Mexican beer selection also. So what is the best way to describe Amigo's? Well they are not a Mexican restaurant. They are a restaurant that serves fabulous Mexican cuisine!

Kirkwood has a lot to offer in terms of shopping and restaurants, but was lacking a fun restaurant with Mexican flair during the time I lived in an adorable little bungalow off of West Clay Avenue. Fast forward a few years, and ta-da (jazz hands), Kirkwood presents "Amigo's Cantina"... an adorable little restaurant with multi-colored shingles on the roof. It's fun, it's festive, it adds some ethnic flavor to a great little town inside of the city. I have been to this yelp-worthy venue several times, and though the freshness of a few ingredients isn't always predictably good, it has become a favorite place for Mexican cuisine in this area... and most others. What I like about Amigo's is that they have the same old tried and true offerings, but the Taco Puffs are what I am writing about today. When my family goes in for a meal, you go around the table and everyone orders the Taco Puffs... We're not winning an originality competition with our ordering, but they are that good! Now, I have been in when the "puffs" have been freshly fried up, crunchy and delicate, and I've also been served old "puffs", which are not so crunchy and not at all delicate. I am reminded of the movie "Big Daddy" and Adam Sandler's character's quote regarding old balls. "Gross". Old puffs are similar to old balls. You will recognize the difference... and it DOES make a difference. I went in for happy hour one evening, and was too busy hanging with friends to notice the number of delicious margaritas I had consumed, and halfway through my third, started talking with my hands. I might mention that when I have a few drinks, my hands like to become very animated. I really need to get a sippy cup for drink nights. Anyway, I was talking with my hands about something dramatic and important, and knocked over my drink, which proceeded to funnel itself into my friends' crotch. Lucky for me, said friend is such a good sport and didn't make a big deal about it. I was mortified, but learned my lesson. Margs at Amigo's are great, but realize that they are potent little babies, and it is my professional advice that you watch it. Check yo'self before you wreck yo'self. Happy Dining

I ate at Amigos for the first time this evening. I arrived with my boyfriend around 6:45 on a Sunday. We were immediately seated at a tiny, rickety, and dark table in the corner. The pre dinner chips were cold and the salsa was relatively bland, which foreshadowed the meal to come. We did not order any adult beverages. The waitress forgot we ordered a soda. I ordered the Amigos Tacos, which arrived very quickly (only positive review of my experience), but were well overcooked and very under flavored. Our waitress never once checked on us once our food was delivered and failed to refill our waters. I ate about a fourth of my meal. Overall, the food wasn't great and our particular server was terrible. My boyfriend spoke very highly of this restaurant and was disappointed in this experience. I don't personally see a reason to ever return.

I just went here for the first time for lunch had a great meal. I had the obligatory chips and dip along with their tortilla soup and salad. The soup had a nice bite to it that didn't make you sweat, but told you it was there. Nice! The salad was fresh with all the right ingredients. We sat outside on their patio/deck where I could have easily stayed the rest of the day. Unfortunately I went with my boss so no siestas for me. :( They named this place well!

One of my favorite restaurants! Best fish tacos around. (I had never ordered them until I tried them here, and now I'll rarely order them elsewhere because they're never as good!) Great margaritas, salsa..etc. Guacamole is solid too!

Went for dinner on a saturday. Chips and salsa are good, but nothing special. Margaritas were also good, although a bit small for $7. I had the meat lovers taco platter (chicken, pulled pork and steak on soft flour tortillas) and it was pretty good. The portion size was good, two of them made me quite full already. They have a good habanero sauce you can ask for if you want an extra kick- it was very spicy for me and I can usually drink siracha sauce so be careful! Overall good vibe and good food, service was attentive and friendly.

Wow really just 3 stars!! I can't express how much we enjoy Amigos! Delicious house margaritas, yummy salsa, outdoor seating and great traditional Mexican fare. Only potential down side is service can be strained at the busiest times. Order the grilled fish tacos and you will not be disappointed!!

Tried this place on Saturday. The place was cute, not the usual colorful Mexican place. I got chimichangas, and my girlfriend got taco's. Both were decently tasty. Not mind blowing, but not at all unappealing either. The star of the night was the margaritas. They were very refreshing! We also got habanero salsa. Good lord it was HOT!!! So if you like hot salsa, please proceed with caution.

I was hoping for a better first experience at Amigos. I took my wife for Valentine's Day lunch recently and was quite disappointed across the board. Amigos was suggested by a friend, and we had tried once before to eat dinner and failed because it was incredibly packed. This time it was not busy at all. However, the service was dreadful and extremely slow. It seemed to take a long time to get anything - water, drinks, chips & salsa, our order, and even the check. There was absolutely no reason for the slow service since the establishment was at best at half capacity. The drinks were ok but nothing to rave about (we both ordered mojitos with tequila). I was also not overly impressed by the food. Again - it was ok but nothing phenomenal and certainly not worth the cost. I was a little shocked when I saw the check considering it was lunch, and we had ordered items from the lunch menu - traditionally lower than the standard dinner entrees. I know what you're thinking....and no, the drinks were not what raised the bill. Either way - it wasn't the experience I'd hoped for. Perhaps we will go back in the future, but for now I'm fine with my usual favorite Mexican hot spots/cantinas in the city that offer better food, better service, and at half the price.

We came here one night en route to see a local band play at Helen Fitzgerald's, we were really craving mexican food and didn't want chain food. We, of course, logged onto the yelp app for Android and searched "Near us" and found this place. I was skeptical but decided to give it a chance. The food was reasonably priced for 'authentic' mexican food. That being said, I was NOT pleased that our margarita's "voted #1 best in STL" according to their menus were $8.00/each. Not cool. It was very small, very expensive, too much ice, not enough tart - too much tequila (yes people, if you're a Margarita connosieur like myself, there CAN be too much tequila). Unimpressed. If you are getting tacos - you should choose the flour tortilla. Corn tortillas cannot be picked up and MUST be eaten with a fork as they bust open and fall apart all over your plate as soon as you start eating. Don't get me wrong, the food was good but - the margaritas being so expensive, I was only committing to ONE with dinner and that kind of put a damper on my pre-gaming for the night to come at Helen's. Food seemed very flesh, lots of flavor. The bartender is absolutely hot. He looks like he should have been a male model and has a dashing smile - maybe that's why the place was packed with cougarish late thirties women buzzing around the bar eating lots of chips and salsa and multiple margaritas? Just a hunch. Don't blame em'! If it wasn't for the ultra expensive margarita - without much bang for my buck....I would have very easily pushed this comfortably at 4 stars.

An impromptu babysitter led to a child free night out and a quick decision was made to get Mexican food. Most of the Mexican restaurants around town are not my cup of tea, but it was the suggestion of my wife to go to Amigos knowing that I prefer my Mexican with flavor. Amigos is located in the heart of the Kirkwood business district. It is tucked behind between two other businesses almost unnoticeable as you drive by. They have a few tables outside by the front door. The atmosphere is rustic with exposed wood ceiling trusses and a intimate, but noisy, dining room. In general, I thought the atmosphere was great. We walked in and it was busy on a Thursday night. There wasn't a wait, but the three teenage hostesses were about as charming as an eel as one of them showed us to our table. My wife had an $8 margarita and it was good, but probably not worth $8. I had a bottle of Mexican Bud Light, AKA Tecate. The waitress was super friendly, a tad slow, but that never really bothers me unless it is obscene. The chips and salsa were fair, but we added the chorizo cheese sauce app and it was dynamite. I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but I began my love affair with chorizo after having a QT chorizo breakfast burrito. So my wife ordered the shrimp with goat cheese quesadilla and I had the chicken burrito. My burrito was decent, it was covered with cheese sauce and that was a plus. I didn't jump out of my seat over the beans and rice sides either. But the shrimp and goat cheese quesadilla was seriously bursting with flavor. The shrimp was plump and fresh and the goat cheese screamed with piquancy! I usually order the dish that my wife wishes she ordered, but last night it was opposite. Amigos is worth the visit and I will go again, I will definitely order something different though.

At this point I have been to Amigos Cantina twice. Once on Cinco de Drinko and once yesterday and let me say, both times were very delicious. If you can get their shredded beef when it is fresh and not dried out, it makes for a wonderful burrito. They do add some sort of "nachoish" cheese on top which was a little uncalled for, but delicious just the same. My GF had shrimp and she said they were not over cooked and perfectly seasoned. On Cinco de Mayo my food was very fresh and hot, probably due to the high volume and turn over of the food in the kitchen. This defines my best visit to Amigos. Some how they quoted us a 2 hour wait, then proceeded to seat us in about 30 seconds. We made out like bandits! This past experience was a tad subpar due to the freshness of my meat. if I was solely judging on my first experience I would have tossed in another star. Would I go back? El Absolutely-o!

Good: friendly hostess let us sit at the bar and wait for a table because there was a short wait on a Thursday night. Bad: we sat at bar, were immediately asked what we wanted by bartender (who was neither friendly nor rude). Both ordered margaritas. $8 a pop, not that big, not that strong. Good: were seated right as we got drinks, so wait was not long at all. Good: server was friendly enough. Bad: server would also disappear for very long stretches of time. (For instance, we sat with the bill and our cards out for a LONG time. We were almost the last people in the place by the time she took our cards, the place was closing down and the workers were cleaning all around us.) Good: chips were really corny tasting and good. The salsa was okay and had a bit of spiciness which was nice. Bad: they do not offer a vegetarian bean option even though they serve both refried beans and black beans. I never can understand why places that have two kinds of beans can't leave one without meat. Trust me, you can make black beans VERY tasty, no dead animal necessary. Bad: the nacho themselves. Not all that tasty. The description sounded promising enough that leaving the beans off didn't seem like it would hurt them too bad. Their cheese sauce barely has flavor. I think the guacamole was pretty tasty. I added some of the table salsa to my nachos and they were a bit better. But nothing I would ever bother getting again. Overall a very blah experience. I don't think I will find myself ever going back.

What started out as awkward dining did not improve through the end. We showed up at 5:30 with a group of 6 girls. 1/2 of the outside dining area was empty but they would not push any tables together. supposedly one table was in one servers section and another was in another servers section. REALLY? there were 4 open tables next to each other. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU CAN'T DO FOR ME. JUST DO IT! I think someone was also being trained because they were very slow, we had to tell them that we were ready to order, ready for napkins, ready for forks...etc. they come to our attention when it came to drinks though which was nice. No happy hour specials. there ended up being 8 of us but they could only split the check 4 ways. OK?? Food was very good though! I had the Veggie Burrito and it was very delicious!!!

The service was slow and inattentive. The food was generic and bland. The chorizo cheese dip tasted like a jarred off-brand that you'd find at a grocery store. Huge disappointment. We were here for a Saturday lunch.

A buddy of mine and I have met here several times for lunch, since we both work in the Kirkwood area. I can't comment on dinner, but the reason we've come back multiple times is due to the lunch special. For $7.99, you get your choice of a bunch of different menu items, ranging from tacos, to mini burritos, flautas, shredded meat sopes, and more. You pick one of the those, and then get to choose a side (I like to go for the traditional rice and beans since they're filling, but you can also pick soup or a potato medley). It gets better too- your drink is included in the lunch special! So if you're like me and usually avoid spending $2.50 on a soda, feel free to rejoice and enjoy that Coke while you munch on the complimentary chips and salsa. As for the entrees, I recommend going for the fajita steak tacos as they are always chock full of deliciousness. My only minor gripes are the chicken flautas (they're very tiny and it looks like your entree is basically two tacquitos). I've generally had pretty good service here and have only once had trouble flagging down a server to wait on me when they were exceptionally busy. Besides that, the food tastes good, and they make a great effort to get it out in a timely manner. Now, whether that is so you can get back to work on time, or a preventative measure to keep you from eating multiple baskets of the chips and salsa, I couldn't say!

You MUST get a margarita. Sit out on the back patio if you can. The fish tacos are amazing, with flour tortillas (corn gets soggy and loses it's bottom). I've been here on numerous occasions, and always feel satisfied. Tasty, but nothing overly surprising or interesting, just your basic texmex-style, but done right.

My favorite place for Mexican! The food is delicious, service is great and I love the look of the restaurant, inside and out. There's nothing I enjoy more than margaritas on this patio!

Very nice, and light too. we went On a Saturday and they were crowded. We went with our three children and the wait was exactly as long as they said it would be. I thought that the salsa was fantastic but it was a little spicy for my kids. I ordered the grilled fish tacos which had fantastic seasoning and flavor and we're just perfect. My wife ordered some sort of salad which was very light with a lime vinaigrette dressing which was very tasty. I had a couple of margaritas as well, which were good. Overall, I really liked this restaurant. The food was fresh and not overly laden with sauce And beans. We will definitely return!

Very crowded, and I see why. The food and drinks were both fantastic! We went on a Friday night and had to wait 45 minutes for a table but it was well worth it, will be back soon!!!

I dig this place, but it can be quite noisy inside. Food is good and be sure to read the whole menu, I recommend their recommendations! If you want a kick to your palate go for the hot pepper corn thing as a side, it's very sweet, and very hot. All your traditionals are there too.

Walking around in Kirkwood one afternoon, I spotted Amigos, it's bright and cheery patio practically calling out to me, begging me to come inside. Well, I couldn't obey its calling immediately, but I vowed that I would someday ... and soon! Flash forward to this past Friday night. Friends wanted to go to dinner, so we agreed to meet at Amigos (my idea). My date and I arrived first, around 5:45 or so, and the place was already very busy, so we gave our name to the hostess for a table, and then had a seat at the bar, where we enjoyed two of the best margaritas of our lives. That's saying something, considering we've had margaritas in many, many places, some of them in Mexico, where they definitely know how to do margaritas right. The house margarita mixture is simple, as the drink menu states, just 4 basic ingredients: 1) Sauza Hornitos 100% agave tequila (I'm a huge tequila snob, and it has to be 100% agave, or nothing for me), 2) Cointreau, 3) fresh lime juice, and 4) agave nectar. Talk about deliciousness in a cocktail glass. People, you just don't know. I could live on these margaritas! While enjoying the amazing margaritas at Amigos, the hubby and I also munched on chips, which were super fresh, crisp, and lightly salted, served with a side of salsa, not too hot, but tasty all the same, and perhaps even tastier when enjoyed with one of their fabuloso margaritas. In about 30 minutes our table was ready, so we had a seat, and ordered our food. I had the shredded beef chimichanga, which was a huge, perfectly fried piece of heaven, crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside, topped with a bit of cheese sauce, and some red and green peppers. One of the best chimis I've ever had the pleasure of eating. My hubby got the steak fajitas, which were also excellent. The steak had a good, smokey flavor, and the tortillas a good texture. He was pleased. The only thing I wasn't happy with at Amigos were the beans, but that's only because they put cilantro in their pinto beans. I'm not a cilantro fan. If you aren't either, it's best to avoid them, and opt for their black beans instead. They're very dark, but tasty. My date opted for those, and when I tasted his, I wished I had too. Live and learn. I can't say enough good things about Amigos. I'm very picky when it comes to good Mexican food, but to me, Amigos is a definite winner. I'll be back again, and again, and hopefully very soon, this time to enjoy their gorgeous patio. Thanks to the rain this past Friday, my party had no choice but to sit inside for this visit, but that's okay, it was nice inside the restaurant, as well. One thing I did notice that I'll admit I thought was a bit odd, was the amount of children in this place. For a Friday night, when you'd think most couples would be enjoying a nice, relaxing date night, it was unusually packed with them, some of them even hanging out at the bar, loudly, at that.. At one point my date asked if we were in a Chucky Cheese. I had to laugh. With enough of their wonderful margaritas, I suppose I can tolerate anything.

We went to Amigos kind of late Saturday night. The restaurant was still pretty full, but no wait. The food was good and everything was fresh. The margaritas were very good. Great experience and will definitely return. Our waitress did a really great job explaining a couple dishes. We had steak fajitas and a fish dish. Not your usual Mexican, but very tasty.

My first visit to Amigo's was three months ago. My boyfriend and I did not have a good experience. From entering the restaurant to exiting lasted no more than twenty minutes. Our food was lukewarm and bland. However, they were busy so we decided to give it another try. My boyfriend and I went back to Amigo's last night and experienced a FANTASTIC meal. The service was attentive. Our drinks and food were brought to us promptly. My boyfriend got a margarita which was excellent. I ordered red sangria which was a bit on the "too sweet side." Our food was prepared wonderfully. My tacos de bistec had the perfect amount of cilantro, and the steak was ever so tender. My boyfriend's mojo shrimp was equally delicious and aesthetically pleasing. I am hoping for another lovely experience at Amigo's Cantina when I return. I would give them four stars, however I need another excellent dining experience.

I pretty much have the same thing every time - margarita's and fish tacos or the cilantro lime shrimp. Friends have ordered plenty of other things and Ive yet to hear a complaint. The place isnt huge, so it gets pretty packed. Ive yet to eat on their back patio, but looks pretty nice. The bar area is pretty tight too...but the margarita's are pretty tasty. Parking in the area kinds sucks since there are a few places to go on that block. Only complaint: They dont take reservations. Overall, super friendly service every time and everything is delicious. See you soon.

Meh. A group of 6 of us came here after wandering around Kirkwood for some lunch. The service was good and the atmosphere comfy, but the food was nothing special. The tortilla chips were bland, as was the guacamole. I just had a salad, which was nothing special but their house dressing was good. Everyone thought their meal was fine but nothing remarkable.

Kirkwood parking is hell so I hoped that Amigos would worth my time, effort and hunger pains. I didn't have wait too long. About 20 minutes. I've been told the wait can be much longer. Amigos doesn't have a large bar area to wait in. Bummer since I really needed a drink. Once seated service was good but slow. Chips were cold but salsa was decent. I was so hungry I enhaled them! I ordered tacos americana and it was fairly good. I think Rosalita downtown is better. The highlight of the evening was the margaritas. Holy expensive! $8 a pop but loaded the flavor, sweetness, tartness...a regular party in glass. I'd visit Amigos again but wouldn't invest much in the menu items and would concentrate more on the libations.

We went there 2 Fridays ago and sat at the bar and had dinner. Had the pork quesadilla that was amazing. Chips and salsa are the best in St. Louis by far. We sat next to the owner and his wife who were the most friendly people we had met at a bar in a long time. After speaking them for some time, they offered us champaign and chocolates. We will be back.

Placed felt like it could have been "special" but turned out to be fairly average in the taste department. Here's the rundown: The salsa they brought out to start was hearty and had a nice spice to it. I ordered one of their "signature" drinks, a Michelada...was not good (beer combined with Sangria). i'm not saying they did a poor job of making it, i just did not care for the flavor combination it presented, way too spiced. For dinner we had platters of Fajitas and Enchiladas. Both were tasty but nothing special, and the accompanying beans and rice were forgettable as well. Wish i could give it more, but nothing about the meal "wowed" me.

Margaritas are great. The use real lime juice rather than the typical chemical mixes. Food is just ok. Not really "Mexican" so much as Gringo-Mex. The queso is similar to Tostito's queso in jar, as is the salsa. The Pico de Gallo is ok but kinda dry, maybe not the freshsest. Chips were kind of stale. No wi-fi. Service was good until they got busy.

Solid spot for happy hour in kirkwood, good basic mexican fare (recommend the enchiladas). They have really good frozen margaritas, that are a bit on the sweet side. I stuck with the house. Only tricky part can be parking (which is an overall problem in kirkwood). It can get pretty busy, so you may have to get creative about where you park. I ended up parking on a side street.

My dad and I have been coming to Amigo's for the last several years. While it isn't my favorite place to get Mexican in town, it definitely has a lot going for it and it's definitely the best place for Mexican in Kirkwood. The food is quite good, though not my favorite part of the experience. The quesadillas are very good, though a bit on the greasy side; the fajitas are also very good, as are the enchiladas and the tacos. The food is actually fairly boilerplate for this sort of restaurant; nothing here is going to blow your mind in any way, but if you've got a crazing for a good platter of enchiladas, Amigo's will do the job. Where Amigo's really shines is at the bar. They are, far and above, the best margarita in Saint Louis. Handcrafted by their bartender (an old fella who clearly knows what he's doing), they use only premium ingredients (No sugary margarita mixes!!!). The resulting drink is just the right balance of sweet and sour, with a nice bit of salt on the rim. The sangrias are also excellent, though even they cannot touch the magic that is the Amigo's margarita. The decor is very nice, especially the rainbow colored wood paneling on the front of the building. The acoustics are not very good, though, and it can be very hard to hear anything when they get crowded (which is fairly often). The staff is very friendly and quick on getting chips and drink refills. They also have mariachi bands on occasion, which are very fun!

Pretty solid choice for lunch in Kirkwood! Lunch specials run about 9 bucks and include a soft drink. Also, they let you substitute something else for rice & beans. Notes on the visit: + The seafood chowder will bring me back again and again! They have it 2-3 times per week and you can call ahead to see if it is available. Savory, creamy and chock full of yummy stuff like tender potato, sweet crab meat and juicy shrimp. + Our server took great care of us. Drinks were never empty and she was extremely conscientious about my jalapeno issues. + I loved that they had a list of items to choose from as side dishes instead of the standard rice & beans. I wonder if anyone has ever done a study to determine what percentage of rice & beans goes in the garbage at the average Mexican restaurant? My guess is that it has to be a significant number. +/- Cheese enchilada was pretty bland but the pork mini chimi was really good. Juicy and succulent pulled pork wrapped in a small flour tortilla and flash fried. The sauce on the side was tangy and slightly spicy, reminiscent of a chipotle bbq sauce. - The salsa is pretty bland but the chips were fresh and crunchy with a slight saltiness. I will certainly be back...but only on seafood chowder days.

The wait was 45 minutes on a Saturday night at 8:30ish. They have a bar, but it is typically packed. Somehow we walked up as two others were leaving. The bartenders are attentive and friendly, and they serve chips and salsa while you wait. We were seated and I proceeded to order a dish called shrimp mojo. It was spicy (too my liking) and served with really flavorful rice and beans. The food was really good. The atmosphere was quaint. And the service was fine. My only negative is that the value wasn't all that great. We spent close to $90 at the bar & table.

We went on a Sunday night, about 6. Not too crowded. We told server we were ready to order, she said ok and walked off. ?? Once she came back, we ordered. I had fajitas, chicken and steak. Chicken so dry wasn't editable. Steak was so tough (flank?), no good. Corn tortillas fell apart, unusable. Husband had white sangria, no fruit, looked more like a vodka tonic with very little wine. Server came with check and my dinner was discounted 50%! Went to manager and she said she would give me more of a discount. I said I shouldn't have to pay for it and we didn't. Service was quick. Don't get how they do such a business. We only live 4 blocks away, just too bad.

2.75 stars. This place is fine if you're not into terribly tasty and authentic Mexican food but you're in a pinch to satisfy you're Mexican food craving. We went there on a Friday night and were told that the wait would be 45 minutes, but we probably only waited 25 to 30 which was nice. Our table was super tiny and cramped and right by the door where people were waiting to be seated. The chips were good but the salsa was mediocre. I got the tostada appetizer which was plenty of food. It comes with three tostadas and I was full after one. It was pretty good but I could have made something similar and just as tasty at home. My boyfriend got the pork quesadilla and thought it was just ok. It was overloaded with pork and did not have enough cheese. I wouldn't return to this place willingly again because there is better Mexican in St Louis.

This was my 2nd visit to Amigos Cantina and I can honestly say the first visit back when was a lot better than this one. We actually were seated immediately, given the crowd we saw upon walking in. We instantly got chips, which were pretty decent and our waitress eventually showed up. We got waters just because my gut started telling me that we might not see her very much that night - and it was true! My husband ordered the fajitas and I got the chicken chimichanga. His looked amazing, mine not so much. The chicken was mixed with something other than a mexican sauce, it tastes more like a spaghetti sauce to me. The rice was dry and bland and tasted like it came out of a box. As I made my way through my meal, the chicken got drier and I couldn't finish it. Luckily my husband's fajitas were delish to him. Our waitress...yeah we saw her probably 2 times the entire meal. Then when it came time to pay, she literally stood right at our table to watch us pay. Then she dashed off. I've heard the margaritas are good, maybe I'll go sometime for happy hour and only get that and the chips because I was not impressed with this last visit.

My wife and I visited Amigos Cantina last Saturday for dinner. We both had their classic margarita, which was good. Mary had the crispy chicken tacos and I had the steak quesadillas. We also had chips and salsa, with extra guacamole. Everything thing was tasty and reasonably priced. We will probably go again.

Salsa was decent, chips were good a little thick. Margarita was good and potent! Meat lovers enchiladas were good. They didnt have chili rellenos and that is a must have item for me.

What I like about Amigos is that the food is good without being greasy/overly cheesy. I am a cheese lover, but I don't really need EVERYTHING smothered in it, and I think Amigos does a good job of focusing on the other flavors. It's usually pretty hard to get in here, so come early or be prepared to wait! PS - the margaritas are strong! :)

If you're looking for high class tex-mex this is your place. I felt that the prices were expensive for what you got, and it didn't compete with El Agave (real mexican food) or Nachomamas (typical tex mex.) One thing I did enjoy was the patio outside. They have fans outside so you're not sweating as you're eating your expensive qdoba quality food. The waitstaff was also very friendly. Try the house Sangria

  • Kathy S.

I really want to like this place, because it's a 10-minute walk from my house. I've eaten here three times now, and all three it's been very mediocre. The salsa they serve with chips seems like it must have come out of a bottle with the word "Pace" on the side. Entrees are fine, but not real flavorful or authentic-seeming. The guac is almost totally flavorless. The margaritas are OK; I don't know why everyone says they're the best in St Louis. (There have to be better ones somewhere, right??) This place is probably fine if you haven't had much authentic Mexican food. You're better off trying San Jose Mexican Restaurant in Crestwood if that's what you're looking for.

Great margaritas. Best in St Louis. Good looking food but needs some spice with the exception of fish tacos which also were tasty. Worth a visit if you want a step over El Maguay.

Enjoy dining here since food is consistently good and service is very attentive. Most recently went on a Friday night and did not have to wait for a table for four. Cute back deck, wish it could seat more. Very good margaritas, some of the best ones in town.

Great location, great deck..sad the food and service don't match. Menu says guacamole is fresh but it is like paste. Steak in tacos was tough and tasteless. 3 out of 6 tables were brought the wrong order or were missing something. Hostess was bringing out food and waitress hardly around. Thinking short staffed. I want to l love it but they make it hard to love.

Fortunately friends of ours turned us onto this place. It was really delicious and a great atmosphere with the Mariachis playing (although kind of loud to have a conversation!) We went on a Sunday night. Ordered a Chicken Quesadilla, the chicken inside was chargrilled, fresh and delicious. Chips and salsa were ok. Haven't tried the margaritas yet, but I will definitely be back!

Food was good. Atmosphere was very authentic on a Friday night. Service was a little slow, but that's because the waitress had about 6 tables at one time. We liked their chips and salsa ok. The parking was good and it's just close to lots of other nice attractions in kirkwood. It's not hacienda, but a close second!

A lot to say here but I'll try to keep it brief. We were seated right away on a Friday night. However, we were "seated" in a booth that had soaking wet seats! We realized this too late... The food is actually pretty good quality, but not for the price. $17.50 for a small plate of fajitas? Waitress was quick and attentive. Temperatures outside 76*; temperature inside felt like 96*. Try it once, but doubt you'll be back.

My sis-in-law loves the margaritas at this place so she took me and my bro there tonight. You can spot the restaurant easily because of it's colorful and pretty exterior. I would recommend getting there early so you can be seated right away because apparently it takes a while to be seated once it gets busy. The free chips actually tasted quite good and our server got to us shortly after we decided what we wanted. I had the steak and chicken fajitas and a Dos Equis. The drinks and food came out in a timely fashion, which is always appreciated. My dish was good but only just good. The steak was nice and tender but the chicken was just okay. The dish came with 3 tortillas which wasn't enough to finish what was on the plate. I ended up asking for more tortillas, using 5 in total, so even though I had to ask for more tortillas the ratio between price and food was fair. The food and drinks were good and the atmosphere and services were nice, until we got our food. Then our waitress stopped tending to us until we waved her down. It felt like she had forgotten about us but I guess it's because the restaurant was getting busier. She was nice enough, however, to point us to a nearby custard place when we asked. All in all Amigos Cantina is a pleasant establishment with a nice atmosphere, decent food, and okay service as long as you get there early. If they can make their food more tasty, I'd definitely come back.

I remember this restaurant being decent 3 or so years ago. After dining there at lunch today, I'm left wondering what has happened to it. I experienced mediocre food coupled with slow, indifferent service. The fact that the waitress found it necessary to charge extra for some diced onion on an enchilada was a preamble of the quality of food to come. The salsa, which I find is often a strong indication of a Mexican restaurant's over-all quality, tasted like a cheap grocery salsa with sugar added. Unless you're looking for a Latin-themed patio that offers predictable margaritas, I'd advise that your money is better spent at Taco Bell.

The portions are generous, the atmosphere is great, the service is prompt, and the margaritas, while a little expensive, were delicious.

Amigo's remains my favorite Mexican food in St. Louis (well, certainly in Kirkwood). From what I've heard and read, it's not for everyone. If you're looking for refried beans and greasy burritos, keep looking. Amigo's serves unique, fresh dishes, incredible margaritas (made with lime juice, no sweet and sour mix here!!) & great chips. I typically try different things when I go here, but I had the Spicy Fish most recently an it was absolutely fantastic. The fish (swai, I believe) was light and fresh, and covered in awesome. The spicy comes from the sweet salsa that they bring on the side - it's got a big kick, so proceed with caution! I've also had the pork, fish tacos, fajitas, chimi - all terrific. They give you a choice between flour and corn tortillas, so they have gluten-free options. You can replace the beans and rice for some tasty mixed fresh mixed veggies. The do have a kid's menu as well. It gets packed on the weekends, so be prepared to wait. And if you're sitting inside, it can be very loud. The deck out back is wonderful during the summer though, laid back & reasonably peaceful.

We went for lunch and were seated right away. Everybody got their beverage, and we ordered. Our vegetarian dining partner wanted tacos minus the protein and adding black beans. Server said she'd check with the kitchen on this. Should be simple, right? They already have black beans. Just stash some into the taco, instead of slapping them naked on the plate. Nooooooo, kitchen couldn't do that. So, she got the tacos minus protein, and SHE put the black beans in the tacos. But the kitchen didn't give her extra black beans for this task. No discount on the tacos. Others got pulled pork, which looked quite dry, but she liked immensely; Chef Roberto's chili relleno (the special of the day), which he liked a lot; and I got the portobello mushroom quesadilla, which was great-tasting. I just left with a bad taste in my mouth for the way our vegetarian dining partner was dealt her lunch.

I came in to set a reservation at 6:45. It it currently 8:53 and we JUST placed our order. Granted, its a Friday night but its been two hours and we were repeatedly ignored by waitresses. First, I was told we can sit in the patio. It's 41* outside. Then, we were told they don't serve food outside. The table sitting next to us was served food. We were COMPLETELY ignored by said waitress and were not ever served water for 30 mins. As I write this, our waitress has come to check on us after 20 minutes of taking our order to inform us our food will be out "soon." Do yourself a favor and go to El Indio in Rock Hill or some other whole-in-the-wall Mexican joint. I can say the chips and salsa are good because that's all we've been fed after 2 1/2 hrs.

One of my favorite places for lunch. There is a very nice lunch combo menu which includes smaller portions of familiar entrees, a side, and a drink for $9. I love that Amigos has all the favorites you'd expect at a Mexican restaurant but with a fresh, simple touch. The staff is always friendly, prompt, and presentable. Dining room is clean as well as their outdoor dining area. Only thing stopping me from rating the 5th star is the price. As noted by other reviewers, the price is just a tad high on some dinner entrees.

Went here for lunch this week and it was Great! Our server was really nice, and service was fast. Chips and salsa were tasty, although not my favorite. My friend and I both had a Margarita on the rocks w/salt, and it was by far one of the best in the area. The food came quickly after our drinks-I had the Sopes and my friend had the cheese Enchiladas and both were fantastic. I'll definitely be back, even if it's just for another Margarita.

Here for the first time on valentines day. No wait which is good but that's all that was good. Food less than mediocre. Cheese enchilda was hard as a rock from being burnt on the bottom. Everything else was average and if they were trying to be somewhat authentic they weren't close! Better off going to Chevys!

My boyfriend and I have been looking for a new Mexican spot, being new in town. Went to Amigo's Cantina on a whim and had absolutely the best time. We both work in restaurants and love quality ingredients, and this meal was incredible. Not to mention the best margarita I've had in years. Quick, friendly service. GO THERE!

Before going to Amigos, I heard from several individuals that their margaritas were the best in town. I will say that the margaritas were delicious, but I'm not completely sure they were worth the price. The salsa was fresh, but I thought the guacamole could've came in a bigger container. I ordered a chicken fajita burrito. I don't really like cheese, but the cheese sauce that was drizzled over the top was actually pretty dang good. However, the best thing at the table was the fish tacos. They also came in some amazing sauce. Next time I will be ordering those.

Best fish tacos in town, but overall, the menu is a bit pricier than usual for Mexican. Wish the margaritas were less expensive!

I absolutely loved LaCantina (Sister restaurant to Amigo's) until Saturday night. My best friend and I share a birthday and made a reservation a week in advance for a table of 13 for dinner at 8pm. When we arrived the doors were locked from the outside, but there were a few tables full of people eating in the restaurant. No one would come to the door to let us in. A couple of people were walking out so we were able to get in. The hostess told us that they were closing the restaurant and that they were no longer taking any new tables. I explained that we had made a reservation a week before. She was extremely rude and told us that there was nothing that she could do. She also said that they were out of food. We had to wait for our entire party to arrive before we went up the street to Milagro. The way we were treated really put a negative spin on the evening and got the evening off to a late start. I understand that things happen, but this is not the way to treat a loyal customer, especially one who had a reservation. I'm completely disgusted and will never patronize Amigo's as a result. Just thought everyone should know how the owner's treat customers.

In my quest to find decent Mexican food, I'm always willing to try a new place. We've eaten here a couple times recently and I have to say I really like Amigos. It's not really in an area we frequent but it's close enough that it's not out of our way to go find some quality Mexican food. I've had the chicken enchiladas and a shredded chicken burrito. Of the two I liked the enchiladas the most, but I've always been a fan of enchiladas. I've heard the shrimp tacos are amazing, so maybe that will be what I try next. I do have to rave about their margaritas, they were very good and I could have easily had several more. Service was a bit slow both times we've been in, but I believe both times were Friday nights so I can't hold that against them.

I really want to give Amigo's a half-star less, due to a fairly overpriced margarita, but since I've only been once I'll be fair and write it off as a possible bartending mishap. But more on that later. As mentioned, last night was my first time visiting Amigo's and the food itself did not disappoint anyone in our party of six. Everything was fresh, colorful, and flavorful. There were two vegetarian dishes ordered, and those both appeared to have fresh vegetables which weren't turned to mush (i.e. the average fajitas). I myself had the chicken burrito and the meat was seasoned perfectly and with tender consistency and good sauce. Also, while the burrito itself was not huge in size, it was jammed full of chicken. Now, back to those margaritas. -The Good: Great flavor, tasted quite fresh, and tasted like there was some booze in them, without the booze+ massive sugar overload you get in many Mexican spots (Amigo Joe's, looking at you). -The Bad: $8.00 for a margarita in a fairly small glass, LOADED-up to the brim with ice. Four of us ordered them, and 3 of 4 had our glasses loaded-up with ice, while the 4th person got a proper pour ratio. Luck of the draw I suppose, however for $8.00 per, this needs to consistent and worthy of the cost. Those are martini prices in most places. Service was very friendly, although she appeared to be the only one out on the patio on a busy night. This created some understandable delays, but nothing worth griping about. All-in-all, I'd definitely go back to Amigo's again. The food quality is up there with the best I've had in town amongst Mexican places, and the environment is also nice.

Michelle, our server was not only slow beyond belief. But we barely got water refills. Sour Cream took over 15min! She didn't even apologize for the wait, then she stood there and lingered after every mistake she made. Did I mention the food is bland? Save your money and your time. I'll NEVER eat here again.

A little bit classier Mexican joint then most. Dim lights (not too dim) and good music in the background (not mariachi). The margaritas were really good. I'm not normally a margarita guy, but I had 3 of them. The grilled whitefish tacos were great. The fish had a nice spice to it (not too hot), and they came with a tasty yogurt sauce and queso fresco. My dinner companion highly recommended them and I was glad she did. I love fish tacos, and these are definitely in the top 10 best I've had. They also have tamales on Thursday- which also came highly recommended, but they were out. I'm kind of glad that they were out though, because I wouldn't have found the fish tacos. The service was great and our waitress had these crazy beautiful eyes. I'll definitely add this restaurant to the rotation for when I'm in the area.

Great food, good atmosphere, good service. Started with chips and salsa and tried the Mexican crab cakes (which were good) and homemade Guacamole; which was horrible. Is suspect it is not homemade since it looks and tastes like puréed, prepacked guac you can buy at the store. They give you large portions. We loved our meals (steak fajitas and shredded chicken enchiladas). Would definitely go back the next time I'm in the area.

I eat here with family or on a date night with my wife every month or so. Apparently, so does most of Kirkwood and nearby residents. Arrive early or expect to wait a little for a table. Food is great. The margaritas are great too, if not better. I love their chips and salsa too. This is a busy place, so I am obviously not alone in thinking it's a great place to eat and will surely be a Kirkwood staple for years to come.

The music, the geckos/decor, the cheesy colored wooden slats outside are all part of the experience. It's festive.... It's fun.... It's a pretty good restaurant. I've now had lunch and dinner at Amigos. Lunch was slow low key and dinner was crazy busy. The service was the same for both times, prompt to take orders and small things around the table. The food was shockingly much better at dinner when the kitchen had to have been a mad house. I had the meat trio tacos for lunch and shared them and the combination fajitas the night we were there for dinner. I love the fact that they don't do hard shells and would have only preferred that they doubled up on the corn tortillas because the single layer broke in 2 of the 3 tacos. The meat was all tender and not overflavored. They were accompanied by a corn potato mix. Not too shabby but a bit mushy on the potatoes. The salsa was eh.... aka good taste and spice, but wayyyyyyy too much liquid. It was almost like soup. (I am having a huge problem finding great salsa in town). The margaritas were pretty good with dinner. I'd definitely recommend them. All in all...... I'll be giving this place another whirl.

We had a group of 12 without reservations and we were able to hang by the back patio bar til a couple tables opened. I had the grilled fish tacos & they were great! I highly recommend the red sangria as well. Our total bill was around $250 including drinx & tip. Very reasonable for the great food and fun vibe. Our server was friendly and very helpful. Can't recall his name but he looks like John Mayer. We will definitely be back!

I went to Amigos for the first time on Saturday evening. We sat outside and the atmosphere is much better than the typical hole in the wall Mexican establishments. The service was wonderful throughout our meal. The chips and salsa are regular fare nothing too special, but the queso dip is great and worth trying. For dinner I had the grilled fish tacos and for $9.75 three tacos and a side of grilled veggies is a pretty good deal. I enjoyed the tacos, just the right amount of spicy kick to the recipe. My friend got the grilled lime shrimp and she loved it. I wanted to steal a bite at the end but she polished off the whole entree! I also ordered a regular margarita and a frozen one the next round. Both were awesome, I actually liked the frozen one a little more than the rocks version which is usualy not the case when you go to Mexican restaurants. $8.00 for the regular magartia and $7 for the frozen so be aware they are a little pricy, but certainly worth it!

We had been either going to or ordering take out from Amigos regularly for several months until about December 2009. They have great marguerites and the food is actually good- especially the burritos and fish tacos. However, I had a very irritating experience in December. I ordered take out; picked it up and drove to a friend's house (who had a 5 week old infant) about 15 minutes away. Her order was missing. I was quite embarrassed that I had not checked it so called the restaurant. As I arrived to pick it up, the hostess said "here's the order you forgot". That's it. I looked at her a bit incredulously and said, I didn't forget anything, you messed up my order. Her response "whatever, that's what I meant". My response: "That's it?" Her's: "Yes"; then finally; "sorry?". Anyway, we tried again and had another bad take out experience last week. I guess the answer is if you want their food- eat there. Don't do take out.

This is definitely one of the best Mexican restaurants in St Louis. I don't know how he marinades his chicken but it is always super moist and delicious. And their chips and salsa is one of the best I've had..very homemade and I do love me some good chips and salsa. Everything I've tried has been good and tasted fresh; even something as simple as their salad. I eat a lot of salad and theirs always tastes fresh and flavorful. This along with the good service and clean establishment will keep me coming back time and time again.

Get in line, and the wait is worth it. What a great neighborhood cantina. Friday night meant searching for parking in Kirkwood and waiting with cocktail in hand for your name to be called for a table. It is a difficult place for good conversation, unless you like using a raised voice and leaning in to hear what is being said, but it is balanced by fast service and good food. I ordered the stuffed poblano chile, which sounded good on the menu but tasted even better. It was a fire roasted poblano chile filled with a savory, sweet filling of chicken, raisins, walnuts and spices. A nice nob of creamy goat cheese sauce was poured over the top and was served with red romato rice and pinto beans. I was in the limpie al club de la placa that night.

The only thing I can really say I don't like about this place is that so many of the seafood dishes look SO delicious it makes me upset that I can't eat them. Last time I was there, my friend ordered the Mojo Shrimp...oh man, it looked divine. Not only did it look divine, she said it was probably one of the best Mexican seafood dishes she had ever had. The chef at this restaurant is a native of Mexico and therefore, really knows how to cook this food. He has been doing this for 25 years, so he has perfected his recipes and not one that I have had has been bad. The atmosphere is wonderful, dim but not so dim that you can't read the menu, plenty of color and the place is usually packed but not so loud that you can't have a decent conversation. Also, the mixed drinks are nothing short of fantastic. They actually put alcohol in them, but not to the point of overpowering. I love their margaritas...nothing better than washing down a plate of spicy rice and beans with a well made margarita. Oh, and the guacamole....yummy yummy yummy. It's some of the best fresh guacamole I have had in the St. Louis area. Two people won't run you a huge bill, unless you are really into the drinking either. Perfect place to grab a decent meal on a weeknight or to start your weekend off. AWESOME!

After reading so many good reviews, maybe I expected too much. Margaritas are indeed very good, but very small for the money. Service was slow, food was simply okay. Will not go back.

Cheap prices and good food make this a good place to frequent. The quality is right for the price and the atmosphere is great. The chips and salsa are good and the service is great.

My first visit to Amigo's was great -- I had some FABulous fish tacos. So I was disappointed when we went back recently, got them again, and they were barely OK. Then they attempted to charge us extra for spicier salsa. Huh? I will go again just to see if 3rd time's a charm. Prices are very reasonable.

Holy crud bad service! I checked out the menu online and found something I really wanted to try. We went and it was no longer on the menu. I asked the server if they could still make it (they had all the ingredients from other dishes and just had to sub out the meat on one torta) and she said absolutely no substitutions. I asked why and she said because the cook doesn't speak english, she can't communicate with him and was very rude to us for assuming we could change things up. So I can't get a meal how I want it here? I ended up with a pretty bad burrito and feeling a bit sick because the server couldn't pass on "no queso" (NOT the chefs fault at all, the server was incompetent). Ridiculous. The chips were ultra salty and stale and salsa was okay at best (pretty much what I had for lunch, thanks).

margaritas are top notch and among the best. nice tequila selection. guac was good too. the food was bland to below average. the service was mostly terrible in my experience.

I just went to Amigo's this evening with 5 of my girlfriends and it was a terrible experience. First of all, drinks are super expensive. $8 for a tiny margartita or cocktail that's completely filled with ice? Ridiculous. Secondly, it took an hour and 10 minutes for us to get a table. This was on a Tuesday night. The hostess told us there was a big party outside, so there was limited seating, but it should only take 15 minutes or so. About 40 minutes later, another hostess came to tell us that our table was ready so we could head outside (we wanted to eat on the patio). When we walked outside, there was no seating availble. We told them we would just sit at one of the empty bar tables but they told us we could only have appetizers at the bar tables. Seriously?! Anyway, after standing awkwardly in the outside bar area waiting for a table for another 10 minutes or so, we finally ask the hostess if we can put one of the small table together with one of the bigger tables. WE had to ask this, they didn't think of it themselves. After we FINALLY get seated we expect to get served right away. Not so much. The waitress doesn't come over to our table for another 10 minutes. We actually had to ask for waters, which she later brought out one at a time. We ordered drinks and dinner right away. When I explained how frustrating our situation had been so far and asked to speak to the manager she told me she would come right out. Again, not so. Another server comes out and brings one of my friends food, but none of the rest of ours. We sit and wait for several more mintes until the rest of the food is brought out. The manager still doesn't come out so we ask another server to speak to the manager. When the manager FINALLY comes out, she apologizes for our inconvenience but basically makes a bunch of excuses instead of trying to make the situation better. She states she cannot guarantee anything, but she will try to help us out. Really?! She wasn't sure she could do anything for us?! The meal was fine, but the manager never comes back to the table. The server brings us our "check" and tells us the bill has been taken care of. At least we didn't have to pay for such service. I will never go back to Amigo's again.

Salsa is very good, and had a couple of good meals but...had one experience where I ordered the seafood enchiladas and they were about the worst Mexican seafood dish I have ever had. The seafood was non-existent and the server and manager did not seem to care. I will not be going back as it is not cheap and will not take a chance on a bad meal again.

The chips here are kind of thick and cold--not terribly interesting. I had the tilapia tacos which were fine, but again not particularly special. Friendly atmosphere and super fast service are big pluses. Overall, a nice place to meet up with friends (and bring the kiddies too) and warm food to fill your tummy, but on this visit, we weren't wowed by the food.

Trendy Mexican inspired menu. Bit pricier than you typical joint, but quite tasty. The margaritas were pretty darn good too. The restaurant itself has bad acoustics - very loud and hard to have a conversation.

This was my first visit to Amigos Cantina. Met some friends for drinks here before a Stages-St. Louis performance. This part of Jefferson Ave. is full of cute and quaint eateries with pet friendly outdoor dining. Amigos is no exception. We sat at the bar and the bartender Jeff was friendly, accommodating and made a mean margarita. We ordered guacamole and queso with chorizo. I'm not a fan of chorizo but the taste was not so sharp in the dip and the portion size was just right. The guacamole was some of the best I've had in quite some time. Amigos scores on atmosphere and off the charts margaritas. I can't wait to try it again for lunch or dinner.

Great Mexican food and margaritas! Come for the food, drinks and atmosphere. It gets very busy especially on weekends. Recommend getting here at five at least. Free chips and salsa and speedy service!

Ever.

One day...

I love going to Amigos Cantina for margarita nights with my friends! The food is good, the drinks are generous and the ambiance is what you would expect of a mexican restaurant.

AWESOME!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
