I found out about this place a few years ago and I cannot believe it has taken me this long to write a review for it. This place has two shining stars on the menu. The Italian Beef and the Gyro. Other than Angelo's I do not know of a good Italian Beef sandwich in Saint Louis. HOWEVER, the product you get from this establishment is equally as good as it's Chicago counterpart. There are numerous places to get Gyros in Saint Louis however I think the Gyro you get from Angelo's is one of my favorites. There is a fairly large seating area here however most of the people seem to get the food to go.

This location is not closed. Yelp has the wrong location listed as close. This place is always very busy for lunch (everyday!)

I've ate gyro plates here twice. The best gyros I've had in stl so far. My friend got the Italian beef. I knocked off 1 star, because the lady behind the counter (manager?) was not friendly at all to me. I'm a sweet gal & just asked about the different sizes of cups for tiziki sauce & she explained 2 ounce & 4 ounces, pretty much what don't i understand,? We'll I'm a visual person & wanted to make sure I was buying the right amount. Anyways , my friend said that lady was rude to her as we'll on her 1st visit & almost left, Alas, just order & hold ur tongue , the food is worth it,

I came here for lunch with coworkers. We looked at the menu and had to ask a few questions because there were no descriptions for the menu items. The woman behind the register got very irritated that A) we didn't already KNOW what we wanted the second we walked in the door and B) we had the audacity to ask for details about things to help us decide. I finally decided on a Philly cheese steak and when I got it back to work I realized it had mayo -which I won't eat- tomatoes and lettuce. I didn't ask what was on it because that's one of those things that's always the same. I couldn't even eat it. I traded with my coworkers. The service was terrible, the food wasn't what I was wanting or what I thought I ordered. I'll never eat there again.

Was referred to Angelo's by a lifelong south Chicagoan who claimed they had the most genuine Chicago-style dogs and beef in the St Louis region. After trying Angelo's, I'd have to say the owners meet the spirit of a typical Chicago-land sandwich joint. Went just after the lunch rush and it appeared there were only 2 staffers on duty. The front-desk and the kitchen. Numerous tables still remained unbussed when we arrived. The front counter staff was on the phone for a take-out order so the line waiting to order didn't move for a few minutes. The menu is pretty varied with all the Italian Beef, meatball, sausage, hot dog, burger and gyro entries you'd find at a Chicago lunch spot. The pricing scheme is pretty much stand alone sandwich = $6. Make it a combo for $9.50 (fries and drink). Did not look at the pizzas, but the menu appears to have mozzarella or provel offerings. I was primarily interested in the Italian Beef and I asked for it "dipped" to ensure juiciness. The roll isn't the typical Italian bread you'd find up north, but it wasn't bad and held up okay to the ample beef and peppers. Overall, a real yummy sammich. The fries were okay, but as others have mentioned, would have preferred steak or crinkle-cut. Soda machine is Pepsi products. Overall, a long haul from St Louis for a decent taste of Chicago, but I will plan to revisit if/when I'm out at the outlet malls in Chesterfield.

By far the best gyro place in this town. I've eaten the Gyro Platter countless times. It comes with insane amount of meat, fresh tsatsiki sauce and cheese cube. You will certainly have enough leftovers for at least one full meal afterwards. Gyros are not fancy food but sometimes it is harder to crank out good flavors from simple ingredients. They do that very well here. Go at lunch time. You'll have to fight a crowd but everything is guaranteed fresh then.

Tried Philly after recommendation... It was sloppy and cheese was the dominant taste not the meat or other elements... Still tasty but when you are getting $ dollar service-atmosphere and taste why pay $$ It is not an expensive place but with similar prices you can have better food... Will try gyro and will update the post

I love this place!! Being from Chicago i am super picky about places that say they are like home. This place does it right!! I recommend the italian beef dipped with mozarella and peppers. This place gets my stomach thru until i am able to go home for a weekend!!!

  • Stephanie W.

I'm not from Chicago so maybe that's why the chicken gyro was not what I expected.. it was more like slices of chicken sausage. Not a fan. Maybe I'll go back to try something different. We planned on eating there but had to leave because it was so stinkin cold, prob 50° in there!

My, my, my! I am surprised by all the reviews that were under three stars, because this restaurant was a definite hit for me when I used to work at Boeing as a contractor. I came into this restaurant at least once a week, Their gyro's are huge chocked full of the gyro meat and their fries are always hot and fresh! If you are a Christian, they always have free bibles they give away, in addition to different pro christian charities. If you are you not part of the christian persuasion, this is easy to ignore, simply because of the good food! I am so upset that I don't live close to this establishment though. Would love to come in the future!

I love this place!!!! I found it by searching on Yelp, I noticed it was close to my house so I have it a try. I have since eaten there several times since then. The Italian beef and sausage combo dipped is one of the best things I've ever eaten. I'm sure the other items on the menu are just as delicious; however once i find something I like, I rarely venture to something else. The place is always packed so that speaks for the food here.

They make a gyro and they do a damn good job.

This is one of those greasy brown bag spots. Food can be hit or miss, so I'll tell you what I've liked so far: 1) Gyro 2) Tacos - they do an interesting soft shell taco with a slice of white cheese inside of the taco instead of the typical shredded cheese. Go easy on the hot sauce if you're unsure. For a non-spicy lover like me, I couldn't really handle more than a few drops. Italian beef and hot dog was ok. (Perhaps I need to give Italian beef another try; it was a long time ago.) I did not prefer the corn nuggets (aka corn fitters at some other places).

My Gyro overflow-eth. I stopped in here for lunch and it was great. I asked what they were known for and the gorgeous woman behind the counter said, "our gyros, the hot dogs....well pretty much everything." So I went with the gyro with fries and the homemade baklava. The gyro was very good and very full of meat, the fries were part of the combo deal and were pipping hot, and the baklava was a perfect sweet and flaky finish to my meal. All in all I recommend this place to anyone looking to have a quick bite to eat that is great.

I haven't had anything bad here! Their Chicago dogs are great. I love their fries! They are nice and floury and even though they aren't crinkle cut, the texture reminds me of those awesome fries you can usually only get at a Nathan's hot dog stand. The Gyros are huge and some of the best in town. I once made the mistake of getting the gyros plate and I lived off of it for three days! Be warned that just by transporting them back to your office or home that you will have the fragrant bouquet of spiced gyro meat hanging around for hours. I like to get a gyro and then throw the used gyro stank wrapper into the wastebasket of an unsuspecting co-worker just to be a jackass sometimes. The taco's are a real unexpected bit of awesomeness and I love the hot sauce that you get with them.

The Italian beef dipped is fantastic. Get peppers, sweet and spicy. Don't forget the napkins! Crispy hot fries completed an affordable, delicious lunch.

This location is not closed but the cashiers service was so poor that it will be soon! This was my worst lunch experience venturing out of the norm ever!! Never Again!!

  • Maceo S.

The Chicago dogs are very good & I love how they do their fries but to be honest the Italian beef when dipped & added hot peppers is simply outstanding. I highly recommend folks try all the above but mainly the beef. As Mike Shannon would say " unreal folks".

This place is also close to my work.. first time eating at this place and i must say.. it was good! I got the Gyro combo.. it was more then enough for lunch. I will be back!

Angelo himself is there and the food is great. The Gyro platters can easily feed four, just order a couple more Pita's. He actually makes a Gyro Pizza for me that is incredible and you better order large or you will regret it. Will definitely be back. Remember he closes early at 8pm through the week and 9pm on Fri & Sat so get there early or even order food to go.

  • Allan C.

Meh, a decent place to get your greasy food but they're pretty disorganized and will likely get your order wrong. (They've almost always miss the peppers on my hot dog.) They have Chicago memorabilia decorating the place but the place is sparse enough that is isn't cheezy. Who knew it would be so hard to find a decent hot dog place!

  • Danielle A.

I went here of my own accord today. As expected, the place is small, but most people get their food to-go so it doesn't matter. They did get my order wrong, but not terribly wrong. I ordered the chicken gyro meal and they charged me for and gave me the chicken gyro platter. When they realized their mistake, they offered to pay me the difference and give me what I ordered, but I told them I was ok with the platter. In the end, they gave me a free drink. I would have probably given 5 stars had they not gotten the order wrong. The food is really good though, so they get 4 stars from me this time instead of 3.

OK, so I'm going to start with the feature you will see last - the "Letters to God" wall. Inside the restaurant one of the walls is covered with what look like to be children's letters. It is on the wall for at least 6 months, and possibly longer - it took me some digging to figure out what they were. Apparently they are for this movie called "Letters to God" (Which came out in April). It has just horrific reviews, and obviously none of the letters from Chicago Taste made it in. Sorry kids, the Pony Express missed it's stop :) So the food... they serve Gyros, Dogs, Tacos, and other quick greasy food items. I'll mention the standouts: - Chicago Style Hot-Dog - great! It has a pickle, peppers, tomatoes, and hot peppers. You can request kraut. It's just great. - Polish - large polish sausage + onions on a hoagie. Also excellent. - Gyro - They have two types, the traditional and the chicken. Don't get the chicken. Excellent street-food type gyro. The standout amongst the standout: *Gyro Platter*. They advertise this thing as a "mound of meat" and "feeds 3 people", and man they do not lie. This is an easy 2-3 artery clogging meals for me, and a great value. The regular gyro meal comes with a portion for 1, and costs $7something, the platter is $10.51 and is easily 3x the size. You can share it between 2-3 people. The atmosphere is sort of what you would expect from a Chicago grab and go place... kind of dingy, eat on a wrapping paper type situation. There are a few tables around to eat in, and over lunch a constant stream of people getting take-out. My only gripe is that (aside from the gyro platter) the place needs to be cheaper, but on the other hand there is not a similar type of eatery nearby, and their business seems good, so they are probably not going to drop their prices. If you like the standouts I listed above, definitely go visit.

This place was so cool! We ordered 3 gyro plates and had too much food for 5 people! Also, it is my job to get the food ordered, I do not always get the best details. The woman that answered the phone was so patient with my naive-ty that I really appreciated it, and gave us several menus, just in case some got lost along the way. Love the krinkle cut fries, they are my favorite. I have also never seen better use of those styrofoam togo boxes. Ever. they had the fries on the bottom, and extra gyro ingredients in the holes, cheese and onions and tomatoes. then a layer of paper, TONS of meat, a layer of paper, and the pita bread on top. Loved the cucumber sauce, it was perfect. The meat, perfect, tender, not dry. And! this place is so close to home, I can't believe I have never been there before. I will have to give it the fifth star when I can go back and try some variety of food.

I've had Italian beef in Chicago and this was far from it. The meat was not tender, dry and not flavorful.

Once upon a time, I worked in Hazelwood. Angelo's Chicago Taste was minutes away from my job, so naturally, I found myself there for lunch quite often. The place serves a wide variety of items, ranging from tacos to burgers, and even baklava. But I came here for one thing, and one thing only: a Chicago dog! Okay, two things: a chicago dog and a gyro. But who's counting? The Chicago dog was prepared pretty authentically, as far as I could tell. The red hot chicago dog was served on a poppyseed bun and had all of the traditional toppings, even the neon green pickle relish. Yum. I loved it. The gyro was tasty, but not my favorite. The meat was pretty dry, not juicy and flavorful like I was hoping it would be. Prices were cheap and service was friendly. I wouldn't drive all the way out to Hazelwood to come back, but if I was in the area, I'd probably stop by.

Angelo's is a small place in a strip mall. Parking can be at a premium during the lunch hour and there seems to be a steady stream of people coming and going during this time. You can only get into the parking lot from northbound Lindbergh or westbound McDonnell Blvd. There are a few tables and a waist height standing table along one wall. All orders are served wrapped and bagged to go, even if you are dining in. I have at one time or another tried the Philly cheese steak, chicken cheese steak and Chicago dog. All were very good. The cheese steaks come on a hoagie roll with the cheese, meat, onions and green pepper melted together with shredded lettuce and sliced tomato on top. You can get hot or sweet peppers on top if you want them. Combo meals come with french fries and a fountain drink. The Chicago dog uses the authentic Vienna beef hot dog. French fries are hot with a nice texture and nicely salted. I give Angelo's Chicago Taste: "Two Thumbs Up!"

My wife always wanted to try Angelo's so we dove in today. We are very glad we did. We both had the gyros combo. Beef way overflowed the pita bread. Tsatsiki sauce was very good. Fries were crispy and hot. Enjoyed every bite. Also enjoyed the poster that listed all the reasons that you know you are from Chicago. When we start jonesing for gyros again, we will most certainly return.

My husband and I stopped by to try Angelo's gyros and philly cheese steak. This visit we opted for just the main items. We did not get a fries. Both items were big. I felt that you got what you paid for. My gyro was stuffed with beef. Some of the meat was dried out. The tzatziki sauce tasted like plain yogurt and sour cream mixed together. I like my tzatziki sauce to have dill, parsley or mint flavor to it. I would have been happy with any seasoning. The sub was also packed with beef. My husband said it was decent sub. We are both going to go there again maybe during the day when the kitchen is busy and items are fresher.

Ok so this is the first place I went to based on Yelp reviews so this will be my first review on Yelp. Had the gyro platter, fries, drink and balaclava. Yes it was enough for three maybe even four people. Everything was hot (well not the sodas) fresh and tasty. Was nice to be able to make your gyro just the way you want it and the sauce was good too. The fries were great and seasoned just right. The lamb was good and the onion and tomatoes fresh. The balaclava was a nice finish to a great lunch. Definitely worth it for two people-even three. If you like gyros this is one place you will want to give a try. Will stop in again sometime...soon. The place itself is somewhat small but there is enough room for a small group to enjoy a lunch together.

We finally gave this place a try and we are glad we did.I had a simple cheeseburger and fries. The burger was huge and tasty. The condiments were simple, ketchup, mustard, pickles and onions. The fries were great a little thicker cut. The food was made fresh and is always a plus. my wife had the gyro and said it was one of the best that she had ever had. For desert I had my first taste of baklava. Where has this been all my life??

    (4)
  • Alyssa S.

Their burgers are gigantic and not too greasy.. However... they've only been open a short time and their prices have increased by 1 and 2 dollars. Their gyro plates are a good deal $$ wise and feeds over 2 people. The wings are a little expensive for not very much - if you're going to order something, order the value meal that has a side and a drink added onto it - the cost difference is so marginal it's like pocket change extra for a soda and a side to be added.

I order lunch from there periodically. Great food! The gyros are awesome! and so is the baklava.

I think this place has a solid hold on good Chicago style sandwiches and dogs. I have tried several things off their menu but I usually stick with the gyros. This place is a staple for many of my coworkers because it is so close and it is unique to anything else in the area. I believe it is family ran which I think is a good thing. I believe they take pride in their food. Unique and good! I like it.

  • Caren C.

This placy may not be fancy or very big, but I don't think you need fancy when the food tastes great! The only thing i've ever gotten here is the gyro (and on limited occasions a side of fries) and it is amazing. Overflowing with meat so much so that it almost falls apart--ps that's a good thing! It's a delicious filling meal in itself--for me at least. Just one person behind the counter, it's usually the same lady, possibly the owner but I'm unsure (they may staff more w/ the lunchtime rush from boeing and surrounding businesses) in the late afternoon, but food comes out quickly and they bring it to you. Not the best fries ever (thick cut but not crispy enough for me), but like I said the gyro by itself is definitely enough.
