My husband and I stayed here for our one year anniversary, and we had a great time! My only complaint was that the breakfast was heavy and I could have used a second option. The owner offered to bring us breakfast in bed since we were the only ones at the in having breakfast that morning, it was awesome!
Amazing B&B! The innkeeper Beverly exceeded all expectations! A truly memorable experience and well worth the additional money for special events (my partner surprised me with chocolate covered strawberries and sparking wine on arrival, breakfast in bed, couples' massage, and cheese and rosé [from Beverly's vineyard!]). The estate is gorgeous and created a perfect weekend! We will be back!
Gosh, I wish knew about this place when I lived in KC.. for a B/B --- it's really REALLY CLEAN and not an ounce of dust. I would put this as 5 star B/B .. the sheets were really high thread count.. super heavy cotton! I loved the breakfast.. and just loved how idyllic it was... Casbah room is where we stayed..

Wabash Barbecue

Enjoyed Wabash BBQ a lot. We went down in winter, so it was a bit cold and with no music or anything happening, but on the other hand there was no one there and we got pretty much VIP service. My buddy and I split a sampler plate of ribs, smoked turkey, smoked ham, brisket, and pork. The turkey was pretty awesome, while the ham and pork were pretty standard. The brisket was cold, dry, and a little flavourless...which was a bummer because I was really looking forward to it. It had a solid smoke ring in it, though...so there's a bonus for it. The ribs were pretty good, but the half rack rib plate that the people we were with ordered looked bomb. I think if I go back there, I'll have to go for that instead. The BBQ beans were awesome, while the fries could have been a little crispier. Overall, the BBQ sauce made everything taste amazing anyways...so the meat's lack of flavour made little difference (I think that they rely on the sauce to do the heavy lifting, and just go for solidly good meat rather than the most amazing thing you've ever tasted...). Anyway, Jeremy helped us out during our visit and was extremely nice and accommodating. Major props to him for highly exceptional service. If I'm ever back near KC, I'll be likely to check out Wabash again. Recommended.
If you are wanting to go to a restaurant, and get in and out in under an hour.. Think again. Today, we went with a group of 6 and a baby. When we arrived I asked for a high chair and she said she would grab me one. 15 minutes went by and still no high chair, so we went and asked again and finally they directed us where to find one. Another 10 minutes went by and we finally were greeted by a waitress who then took our order of drinks, appetizer, and food. The app took 15 minutes to come out and the food took 40 minutes. This is no exaggeration. For a BBQ place it is so hard to understand why the kitchen would be backed up when everything is already prepared and the fryer was broken so it's not like we were waiting on fries or something that took longer. When I finally started to eat my food, the bun was so extremely soggy so it was clear that it had been sitting there ready for a while. My side salad was purely lettuce out of the bag. No cheese or croutons on it like it says on the menu. I was disappointed. My expectations weren't super high because I know it's a small town BBQ place, but, come on... To top all this off, we wanted to try and grab something to-go. We asked how long it would take to get this ready and it took about 5 minutes. So it kind of clarified that it was the service and not the kitchen that was slow.
I agree with another reviewer - this is not a fancy place. I consider it to be run down and somewhat of a "hole in the wall" joint, but it should also be known that this place is in an "historic passenger waiting room of the old train depot" so of course it is not going to be something fancy! Sometimes older joints end up having the best food. I have been here twice and was not disappointed either time. I have gone when we were the only ones in there and I have gone when it was packed full on a Friday evening. Both waitresses were friendly and provided us with great service. They have great fried pickle spears to dip in delicious buttermilk ranch dressing. I love their 'signature' sauces - both the regular and hot BBQ have good flavor. I have only had the Fireman's Favorite (burnt ends) and thought it was delicious! The burnt ends were tender and also had good flavor. Give this spot a shot if you love trying different BBQ joints in the KC area.

Pros: Open 24 Hours. Dual split drive thru lanes. Fast service for both drive through or eat in. Cons: Service in the morning can be a little "surly". And double check your order as they like to forget things. Caution. The traffic light at the entrance off US-69 has a revenue enhancement, oops I meant public safety camera to catch red light runners. And if you get a late night Big Mac attack, be prepared. The Excelsior Springs PD likes to follow people leaving here. My family warned me, I experienced it first hand 4x in one week.

The stars are for value. It is good for a fast pizza. The door buzzer will bust your ear drums. The help here can wait out in the car and smoke until they see you drive up. They can then run in and take your order. I try to see what goes on behind the barrier. I am curious about hand washing and cleanliness. Best to just take it and roll. sometimes I eat there by the trees. Birds do come after the pizza bones you throw out. You can get a huge pizza in the Aldi take it home and cook it for a couple bucks more. They are yummy.

El Maguey Mexican Restaurant

119 Crown Hill Rd

Reviews:
First tried this Mexican food in North Carolina and soon learned that there are many of them around but with different names...you can tell when you see the menu. Now as a person that likes an eating adventure I have tried many of those different name same food restaurants and they are quite similar but not exactly the same. The one difference with this one here in Excelsior El maguey is that they serve the best fajitas out of all of them...my husband is the fajita expert here...they use more seasoning than the others and that is what the difference is. Now, I call this mild Mexican food but you can spice it up with hot sauce or jalapenos. Lots of choices and reasonable prices. Always fresh and fast and good portion sizes. Not all of the servers can speak English totally but they seem to do well enough to get it right. I like all types of Mexican food I eat here when I am in the mood for their style of food. if you are ever in Excelsior give it a try...whether it is the first time you have eaten this style or if you want to try the BEST fajitas around. The staff are very efficient and have become friendly to us over the years. Glad to have a good place to eat in our small town.
There is a very popular misconception that El Maquey is sort of family owned one of kind authentic mexican restaurant. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is a chain with franchises all over the region. They also share basically the same menu, food, ingredients, and preparation as Mi Hacienda, La Fluente, and who knows how many others. This is basically Taco Bell with Hispanic wait staff, chips and salsa, white cheese on every dish, and a little higher price. The food is not terrible. Its just ok. Also, just like Taco Bell, every dish tastes the same, no matter what you order.
Yup it is a chain. I like the food just fine. I have seen the same menu about everywhere I go for Mexican food. The chips are to thin dry, and mostly tasteless. The salsa has become more like a tomato juice. Portions seem to have gotten smaller. Coke products so don't ask for a Pepsi. The price is good. Locals pour in with kids and all. I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by the way they prepare tamales these are about average, not in a corn husk. In this town it is about all we have. We could use a Chubbies.

My only real problem here is they run the same food line that does the Taco Bell. That is a sore spot with me. I like the original chicken. The mashed potatoes are nastier than instant, bland watery, and odd tasting. The corn on the cob is overcooked and has no taste. The gravy is brown for some reason I don't get. I would get the chicken and leave the rest.
