Good grief! The one star reviews and the 3.5 overall rating on Yelp for the Walnut Grill in Ellisville, Missouri had me scared - SCARED, I tell you! - to eat lunch there. I probably looked pretty funny hesitantly walking in the door and sniffing the air for any sign of funk, moving my head left to right to see any sign of the shiftless wait staff and checked-out management I'd been warned about. BUT: It was my Father-in-Law's Birthday, and he picked the Walnut Grill because, having traveled a lot with my wife and me, he figured it'd be the kind of place we liked. You kinda can't say no to love like that, and, well, he was right: It is the kind of place we like. So, either: A.) The prior reviews went there on really "bad" days, whereas we happened to go there on a really "good" day, B.) The prior reviewers don't know what they're talking about (which I doubt), OR C.) Walnut Grill read their poor reviews, took them seriously, made adjustments and did some training. The optimist in me favors option "C," because here's what we found.: 1.) An attentive hostess who seated us in a great location where we were able to talk, and my Mother-in-Law got her coveted, back-to-the corner "Jessie James" seat. 2.) A very good server (Andrew) who knew about the menu items, made informed suggestions, and remained tuned-in to our needs throughout our meal. 3.) A lunch menu drawn from their dinner menu that featured good prices for the quality and quantity of food served (slightly downsized from the dinner portions), and 4.) A variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts that pleased 5 out of 6 of us. a.) My Mother-in-Law and I had the Parmesan Crusted Chicken with Gnocchi. The tomatoes used for topping were fresh and bright, and the pan sauce was a good, buttery / tomato-y accompaniment to the very good gnocchi dumplings. b.) My wife had the Salmon Balsamico and found it to be crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and with the haricot verts, pretty good (she cleaned her plate). c.) My daughter had the Turkey Burger and really enjoyed it. d.) My Father-in-Law had the Flash Fried Calamari, didn't eat the peppers that came with it, but ate every bite of everything else. e.) My other daughter had the California Turkey Wrap, and found it to be lacking in flavor, unbalanced with a dearth of avacado, tomato and goat cheese, and overall weak because of its use of deli-style meat. In our minds, deli turkey meat like one can get across the parking lot at the grocery store does not equal "roasted turkey" in a place like this. Just get some turkey breasts, roast them, chill them, and pull them apart by hand. It's not that hard... f.) We shared a Caramelized Walnut Ball, a Cheesecake Trio, and a Spring Berry Tart for dessert. All very good. In our opinion, at a solid and perfectly acceptable FOUR stars, the Walnut Grill is worth your dining time and dollars. And don't be like me, an otherwise trusting member of the Yelp Community, afraid to walk in the door -- let alone actually EAT there -- due to their prior low ratings. Proceed with confidence to the Walnut Grill. I think you'll like what you find.

My college chum and I went for lunch June 26. We were seated right away by a very friendly hostess. Kyle was our server. He was gracious and attentive. We both got a Reuben (~$11). She got sweet potato fries. I got regular fries. The Reuben was on marble rye. A large sandwich. Very greasy. I had to wipe my hands after every bite. Waaaay more bread than filling. But it tasted good. The fries were OK. They had some kind of coating on them. Her sweet potato fries looked better. I ate half of half of my sandwich, four or five fries, and took the rest home.

Three strikes and you are OUT! Yep, it's a new place... great decor, generally good layout, nice bar area with variety of seating options including an outdoor area that could be nice when the weather permits... So, with all of those things going for them, how do they mess it up?... Here's how: 1) Hostesses who seat a large group of men (6) at a booth designed to only really seat 4 comfortably... 2) Hostesses who then move the large group of men (6) to a table near the bathroom with a configuration really only designed to seat 4 by putting extra chairs at the ends... so everybody trying to go in and out of the bathroom has to navigate around you... 3) Waitstaff responsible for too large of an area who become inattentive after your order is placed... 4) Waitstaff who claim "I'm new and only been here 2 weeks so don't know how stuff works..." when the splitting of the check for 5 people produces 6 checks with 2 of them duplicates and mixtures of items not even ordered... and then spend the next 30 minutes trying to figure out how to fix it and the solution is "write down what you had and I'll redo it"... only to produce similar results to the first effort... meanwhile the Manager is doing nothing.... and we're the only ones in the restaurant now... 5) Don't return the credit card used to pay for one of the messed up checks so that by now the customer doesn't realize it in all the chaos so it has to be claimed as "lost or stolen" the next day... 6) Don't realize that not all of the order was made and delivered... after 30 minutes... 7) Produce subpar food that sounds great on the menu but doesn't deliver on the anticipated flavor/quality/etc. I really wanted to like this place... it's close to home and in a great location... but the high prices, poor quality of management, poor quality of waitstaff (probably a training and assigned area issue) and food that could be a lot better just torpedo the place... I'll drive further for something a lot better at a better price point and with superb service... there's quite a few in the area that match that criteria.. just not Walnut Grill...

Went to try this place during West County restaurant week & am so glad I did!! It was a nice atmosphere & had a good menu full of various choices. I am a lover of spin dip and this place has THEE MOST AMAZING spin dip ever!! And don't get me started on that spring berry tart........nom nom nom nom nom!!!!! Super delicious! Both are worth driving back for. I would've given the place five stars, but I wasn't impressed with the fish tacos. It came topped with a "slaw" that turned out just to be a basic bagged salad mix and the fish was too shredded.

Four stars based solely on the food being very good. The rest of the experience was terrible, but likely a random series of misfortunes. The good: the bread was good, our waitress was good (drinks kept full), our salads, soups, and dinners were great, drinks and beer list were good. The bad: 40 minute wait beyond our reservation, hostesses kept saying we were next then seating others, including once coming up to us and calling us by the wrong name to seat someone before us, sat us by what appeared to be an emergency exit (had an alarm on it that must have been off) and then allowed everyone in the back room to use it to go out to smoke and leave (which led to blasts of 30 degree air every five minutes), a food runner dropped a container of ranch next to our table getting it all over our friend's jacket, then the table next to us knocked their water over and it spilled all the way over to our table (not the restaurant's fault though). Like I said, I can't imagine all the errors would line up again, although the restaurant was little concerned. An appetizer was comped for the wait, but the rest was ignored. On to the food. I had a turkey sandwich and a baked sweet potato. They were both great. Our table also had both salmons and the crab stuffed fish (tilapia, maybe?) with very good reviews. The strawberry salad was also a hit. The sweet potato fries were a huge hit and were delicious. The side of apple sauce was disappointing and was no different from musselmans (which at least tasted good), and the chicken noodle soup was unspectacular (again, though, it tasted good, at least). I highly recommend the food, and I am sure the service will improve. I'd have liked a better response, but then again, we didn't complain (but some things were clear, oh well).

We had a great time at this new restaurant. It is a welcome change in the area and so far has been well received. We had the ahi tuna appetizer which was cooked perfectly and very good. The smaller sized salad portions are generous enough for a meal and I enjoyed the apple and goat cheese option. My husband had the fish tacos which he raved about. They were out of some of the wine options which was disappointing, but they recently opened which may explain why. The service was very good and the decor was upscale casual. The menu is very large so they have something for everyone. Every time I've driven by this place has been packed, so the word is getting out. We are looking forward to trying out another dinner here soon.

My daughter and I were headed to another restaurant when we saw that the Walnut Grill had opened. Being from Pittsburgh we knew what to expect and boy did we enjoy our dinners! We started with the Fried Zucchini appetizer (sorry no photos we ate so fast) which was great! Not greasy at all and it was lightly breaded so you cod tell it was zucchini. My daughter had the large Caesar Salad and said it was AWESOME. I had the Caramelized Walnut Salad which was just the way I remembered it. Can not wait to go back with my husband. Now if they only had more Ahi Tuna sandwiches. HINT!

We had a lovely time New Years Eve. I had the Thai pork macaroni and cheese and strawberry salad. The pork had so many different flavors dancing in my mouth and the strawberry salad was amazing. They also had a live acoustic band. We enjoyed our after dinner cocktails in the bar area listening to good music. The service has gone down hill since September 2015.... Better look for management.
