When I was in school, I recall playing a game where my classmates and I each drew a picture according to our teacher's step-by-step instructions. Maybe you've played this as well. Your young mind might have thought that everyone's picture would end up being nearly identical, but at the end of the game, you might have been surprised to discover just how different the pictures were. You could tell that (almost) everyone had attempted to draw the same thing, but some of the drawings were just wildly different. Some kids missed a step. Others misinterpreted things. Some just didn't listen to the instructions. I feel like that is kind of what happened with Qdoba and Chipotle. It's like someone in the '90s dared Denver to give the world two fast-casual Mexican grills that offer Mission-style burritos. Qdoba and Chipotle operate in the same way. Both have been given the moniker of "Mexican Subway," which refers to the fact that food is prepared in front of the customer according to the customer's directions. You even place your order at both restaurants in the same fashion. Depending on what you order, you pick your rice (cilantro-lime or brown), beans (black or pinto), type of meat, and type of salsa. However, Qdoba and Chipotle aren't identical. They're like those pictures my class drew in school. Both have the same concept, but they just aren't quite the same thing. For me, one of the main differences between the two is that Qdoba offers more menu items and more ingredients. As of October 2014, Qdoba and Chipotle offer some of the same things: burritos, burrito bowls, tacos, and salads. However, Qdoba offers salads with or without a tortilla shell, while Chipotle does not have a tortilla-shell option. In addition, Qdoba's menu includes things that Chipotle's menu does not: quesadillas, nachos, and a "Craft 2" option that allows you to pick two smaller portions of certain entrées. [Note: Chipotle offers quesadillas on their kids' menu, and I have heard rumors of a secret Chipotle menu item called a quesarito (a burrito wrapped in a quesadilla). I cannot, however, confirm the existence of this because I always order burrito bowls. ;)] In terms of number of ingredients, Qdoba also wins. Both restaurants have pico de gallo (called "fresh tomato salsa" at Chipotle), corn salsa, salsa verde, and salsa roja. Qdoba also offers (currently) a fiery habanero salsa, an ancho chile BBQ sauce, and two types of queso! BAM! I've been to the Qdobas in Maplewood, Kirkwood, Creve Coeur, and Des Peres. Des Peres is my favorite location, and that probably is because it is the most convenient one for me. I've never had any problems with the service or food here. I think all Qdobas in the area might have them now, but this location has the Coca-Cola Freestyle (a soda fountain that offers more than 100 beverage choices). If I'm trying to be dietarily good at Qdoba, I get the naked taco salad with pulled pork, the leanest meat on the menu. It's good, but how boring is that? ;) If I want to be more indulgent, I go for the burrito bowl or Mexican gumbo. I love that Mexican gumbo. I have it made with brown rice, chicken, and pinto beans. My selections are topped with tortilla soup, tortilla strips (a mere sprinkling), and cheese. (You also get sour cream, but I omit that.) I'm not entirely sure what is in the tortilla soup, and I'm not entirely sure that I care. It is some good stuff, though I find it smells a bit like Cool Ranch Doritos. I often take it home and add Tony Chachere's to it. Hey, it's gumbo, right? Qdoba has more menu options, more ingredients, and I certainly have enjoyed the food I've had here. However, I have to admit that I prefer Chipotle. It's just a personal preference. Yet, if I find myself with a hankering for Qdoba, I'll likely be going to this one. I can't guarantee that you'll never have a bad experience here, but I haven't had one.
Qdoba has one major thing that appeals to me: queso. I think Chipotle is more flavorful, but the queso here is so good! I enjoy getting it on whatever I'm ordering - burrito, bowl or taco. I also like getting nachos with it. It's spicy but not horribly so. I can stomach it, and I don't care for spicy. The service is fast, food isn't too expensive, and it is fast food without being fried. I can get my protein in a more healthy manner if I'm too exhausted to cook. I'll be back!
This place is by far the best qdoba I have ever been to. Not because of the food, don't get me wrong, for being Mexican American food, they are pretty good. The customer service here is outstanding. I love seeing people in the restaurant industry that are tatted up like myself bc most people are judge mental bc of their tattoos. Great customer service.
