We dined here on Mother's Day.....on a lark after finding it on the web. WOW.....what a lark that was. Everything we had at the table was superior. We had several different appetizers to share (3 adults, 2 kids).....my MIL finally was able to enjoy how gnocchi are supposed to be prepared and taste....THEY WERE THE BOMB! I easily could have ordered 6 appetizer plates and had them as my entree. We will definitely be back....considering making reservation's for Father's Day.

This place was okay! I went with a group of 7 people (including one toddler). Out of the food I tried, the Clam Chowder was good, the Athenian potatoes were yummy, and the Orzo was good. However, I thought the duck gnocchi was way too salty and my husband thought his chicken with phyllo dough wasn't that great (too much phyllo!) The atmosphere was cute, rustic, and quaint - but if you go at dinner time be prepared for it to be super busy! There was a lot of people which made it VERY noisy and hard to hear each other across the table. I don't think I would go back, but it was fun to try once!

Very good food. Unique menu with combination of Greek and good steaks. Feels quaint and romantic when you walk in. Only downfall is it is a bit cramped. If you go in the winter bring a coat because my beer got colder with the draft that was coming through the window we were sitting by. Overall very good experience. We will go back.

The food here is outstanding! I mean everytime outstanding! I give the truffle garlic aoil burger a 10+. I normally get a steak. But this burger was off the charts. Beef had incredible freshness and flavor. And its worth the $60 for the whole lobster tail! Share it! But get it! Be advised...all nights here are packed. Worth the wait.

Good food, but kinda mean hostess. Also really small. But the food is amazing.

YUM YUM YUM! Phils is not what I expected at all, I had imagined a menu with the usual steaks, potatoes and salad. WRONG! SO delicious, so well prepared, absolutely EXCELLENT! The hubs had the king cut prime rib, he loved it! I ordered 3 small plates and they were SO tasty! I don't think we we said more than a few words during the whole dinner...it was just to good. the icing on top, when we ordered dessert I told the server I was allergic to raw nuts. She took it very seriously, went back and spoke with the chef and ended up bringing us 2 desserts, just in case we didn't like the one with nuts...even though they were not raw! Great food excellent customer service. P.S. We went as soon as they opened within 45mins there was a line out the door! I think that says it all ; )

Really, you can't go wrong. An intimate atmosphere in what seems to be a small, log cabin in the middle of nowhere, even though in reality, it is right off 36. I've been going here since I was a kid, meeting dad after he got off work at Andersen's. I loved it then, and I love it now. The Chicken Corinthian is pretty much heaven wrapped in phyllo dough - my go-to menu item. Husband loves the steaks (any of them). And the drinks are always refreshing. Looking for an off-the-beaten-path date night? Go to Phil's.

Such a disappointing visit. I come to town annually to shop, see the holiday decorations, and eat at Tara's. Unfortunately, they won't take reservations on Fridays or Saturdays. So the place is super packed, people crowding the doorway, waiting in and amongst the tables, hovering over diners who are trying desparately to enjoy their meal and ignore the vultures at their elbows, people two deep at the bar, and the whole place is noisier than an airport. The kitchen might be the bomb, but greed and avarice has turned the dining area into a disaster. My recommendation; run fast and run far, to another restaurant. Relax, be waited on, enjoy a nice meal, and go home happy. All things that you cannot do at Tara's on the weekend.

Best food in Stillwater! Well, it's close to Stillwater... All the dishes are creative and consistently great! Perfect place to bring people you want to impress.

We visited the resaurant on a saturday evening for a birthday dinner, the food was really good however they pack you in so tight there is not even room to stand while you wait for your table. If you want to have a conversation without screaming or sign language I would strongly reccomend another restaurant. The space is so small and packed the servers dont have room to move through the crowd to deliver food, my poor father got shoved by the server non-stop. If we do go back maybe will try a weeknight and see if it is any better. Sorry the food was good but not good enough to go through the madhouse that we went through.

We decided to give this place a whirl in an effort to try a new place during this visit to Stillwater, and we saw the great reviews, so we drove the 2 miles to the Hideaway. We told everyone about it today. I had the duck dish, and it was delicious. One of the best preparations of duck I've ever had! The waiter commented it was in his "top 5" on the menu when I ordered. For good reason! What else do you need but duck breast, duck confit, multiple types of muchrooms, gnocchi, and truffle oil, all in the same dish. I could only eat half of the masterpiece that appeared before me, and I'm just hoping it's almost as good reheated as leftovers. Doubtful, but I'm optimistic. My boyfriend had the pasta and said it was great, but I didn't really try it. I was too enamored with my dish. They had some other amazing specials on the menu that looked tempting. And seriously - it was not expensive. Maybe we just think that b/c we live in the city, but $17 for a duck dish large enough to feed me for 2 meals? That's a bargain. I think the pasta dish was like $12. We actually thought the prices were really reasonable and would happily go back. What could use an upgrade? The bread was alright, and the butter came in little pre-packaged squares. If they'd whip me some butter and put it in a little cup, I bet it would bring it up a notch. 4 drinks, 2 meals (that came with decent salads), and an app = $68. Not a cheap date, but for a really good meal with a couple of drinks apiece, it was not bad at all. I'd definitely recommend it to others due to the large menu, warm lodgey atmosphere, good service, and quality food. Looks like they may have a little outdoor area that could be promising in the warmer months, too.

We have been to Phil's Tara Hideaway many times and the food is always amazing. I always got steak (which is amazing) but this time ventured into other parts of the menu and now I recommend this restaurant even more! I had the pork tenderloin mojo verde and my husband had the hazelnut crusted walleye. Both were amazing! We also had dessert and all I can say is WOW! If you are in the area, you should seek out Phil's!

I went on one of my first dates with Boyfriend here and I was pretty impressed by his choice. This is excellent food; that date was over a year ago and I can still remember that I had the Greek fettuccine. I can almost taste it sitting here writing this review- that's how good it was. I like the cozy atmosphere here too. They say that Dillinger hid-out there (hence its name), so it kind of has an aura bad-assery underneath the old-church-lady log cabin charm. Do expect to wait a bit if you don't make a reservation on a weekend, but it'll be worth it.

We stopped in on a Tuesday night for a late dinner and I was happily surprised and impressed. I didn't know what to expect but it was ridiculously cute - little log cabin in the woods. Will have to come back in the summer to eat outside. The food was really tasty. I ordered the grilled octopus appetizer - and really, living in Minnesota there were so-o many ways that could have been a terrible terrible decision. Happily it was delicious and perfectly cooked. Had a nice duck dish with gnocchi for the entree - super rich so I ended up eating just a little bit for three meals but very delicious. My crabby table mate wasn't impressed with the steak but I didn't taste it so hard to say what he didn't like about it. Everything I tried was great. Go if you're in the area.

I went here on a whim as I searched an article on insider eats from the Mpls/St. Paul magazine. My wife had requested mediterranean food whil I was looking for something more meat and potatoes. Where does such a blend exsist?, well Phil's! I did not tell the Mrs. where I was taking her, not that it would have mattered because she had never heard of the place. Upon arrival at the restaurant her gaurd was up, and honestly mine was a bit too. It is in an awkward location, the main sign makes it seem as if it might be a rural setting style dive bar, but we went with our gut, trusted the reviews, and I'm glad we did! Upon entering the Hideaway, the decor was rustic, but in more of a log cabin way than a dive bar. The server (Kip) was extremely friendly and helpful. There are no tap beers, if that is your thing you will be disappointed, but there are bottles. My wife enjoyed her martini, and they had a well rounded yet stypical wine selection, all of which we tried we enjoyed. We started with a slad which was split for us, and presented beautifully. She ordered a mediterranean pasta dish which she stated was exactly what she was craving. For me the duck, our server told me he thought it may be their best dish, and when I asked for it Med rare vs. medium his eyes lit up and told me the chefs would gladly do that for me. I might say the best duck I have ever had. Deliciously crispy skin, and nice and pink to red in the center. I can't wait to go back. the Steaks look delicious, and the food and service I had in my first experience left me craving more of the same! I have told my wife and friends that was one of the better outings I have had in a while. We will definitly be returning.

This place really is a hideaway, a little hard to find. It's actually on the frontage road that runs parallel to 36. We got there early (6:00 p.m.) on a Friday night to try to beat the crowd, but still had to wait about 25 minutes for a table. We tried to get close to the bar, but just ended up just being jostled around by wait staff, other people trying to get to the bar, etc... that is my only complaint of the night. Every place we tried to stand, we were just "in the way." Plus it was a little hot in there and I felt claustrophobic. We finally scored two seats at the bar and of course our table was ready 2 minutes later. Once we got to our table, things TOTALLY turned around. I was able to appreciate the ambience of the wood cabin, got a little wine in me... our server was spectacular. And then the food... WOW. I ordered the chicken wrapped in phyllo and husband go the combo platter. Everything was amazing including the salads (upgraded to the Greek salad). We took most of the food home because the portions are enormous. I'm so glad I found this place, I'll definitely go back. When I do, I'll be prepared for the wait. If it's nice outside, there is a large patio area you can wait for your table outside. Probably a better option than getting elbowed in the ribs at the bar.

Being new to Minnesota my boyfriend and I are always looking for a great new place for dinner and tonight we found it. When we pulled in to the parking lot it was packed, but I was still hesitant as the look of the log cabin outside screamed more roadside bar then fine dining. When we walked in the bartender got us drinks while we only waited 15 minutes for our table. The ambiance is comfortable, yet romantic and we loved our cozy table. After great recommendations we started with the mussels and chorizo appetizer. I asked for more bread just to soak up the sauce from the tasty appetizer. The soup and salad that came with our meals were good, but the entrees were the real highlight. I ordered the pork tenderloin with a side of the potato purée. The candied bacon and sauce on each bite was phenomenal. I had the chance to steal some bites of my boyfriends duck confit gnocchi and each morsel melted in your mouth. We ate far beyond being full because it was so tasty. We have lived in numerous states and travelled to several countries and I would absolutely not hesitate to put this as one of my top three dinners. The night was made even better by our waitress who was knowledgable, friendly and had some great recommendations, unfortunately we didn't catch her name.

Amazing food, best gnocchi in town! Affordable prices and a great atmosphere. This place is always busy and for a good reason. Small outdoor patio with a few picinic tables. Doesn't look like much, but the service is great and the food is even better. If you are looking for a Americanized Greek restaurant you should really check out the Hideaway.

This place is awesome. It is small, and cozy, but can get quite crowded on weekend nights. There can be a long wait (they do not take reservations), but it is well worth it. The food is fantastic; good service and great atmosphere. The lamb chops are the best... they are huge, and perfectly cooked. My wife gets the duck and says she has never had better. We are from Louisiana and only get up here once a year, but make it a point to come here on every visit. Don't miss it!

Haven't been here in a while but my husband and I were extremely pleased both in the quality and the taste of the food.He had the Duck Confit and said it was the best preparation of duck he's ever had! I ordered the Seared Scallops. They came with a parmesan sformato that was to die for. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly and appeared just when we needed him.I don't often review a restaurant but this meal deserves 5 stars!

We love this restaurant, we have eaten there a lot. They have one bad feature, if you eat late there, 8:00 or after and dine in the back dining area, the waitresses start their silverware preparation, putting the silverware in knapkins. The noise is incredible, this is the third time we have had this happen in the last 6 months. We ask for them to stop, they do stop, but then we get snide remarks from the waitresses as they go into the back room. We will go back but we are through with the silverware serenade!

We went to the Hideaway on a sultry summer Saturday evening without making reservations beforehand. We were told it would be a 30 minute wait so we hand a drink out on the side deck. We were seated 45 minutes later. The wait staff was prompt and attentive. Our food came out of the kitchen with efficiency. All four of us enjoyed everything that was ordered. The gnocchi appetizer was by far and away the best gnocchi I have ever had. I had the July special, Korean style pork with Asian noodles. I was bowled over when I took my first bite. It was quite simply, the best prepared pork I've ever eaten. I immediately shared with everyone at our table so they could experience it. It was accompanied with a creamy lemony sauce that by itself was just okay but when added with the pork it was tremendous. The complexity of flavors were layered in such a way that each bite took you by surprise. It was a large serving and even with sharing I had enough left over for a generous lunch for work. Hands down, this was the best meal that I have had at a restaurant for ages!

This restuarant is so charming and quaint. We took friends there Saturday night. Unfortunately, it was raining, and that means the parking lot was muddy. A problem if you have good shoes on or don't want to get mud in your vehicle. We went shortly after 5 PM as they don't accept reservations....so make sure you go early unless you don't mind waiting. We have always been treated well by the serving staff here and Saturday night was no exception. The food is fabulous and enough food that I've never had enough room for dessert. Prices are reasonable. You can't wrong with any of the sides. The steamed vegetables with the feta cheese is wonderful! The queen size prime rib is HUGE and the steaks are wonderful. There is a $3.00 upgrade for a greek salad from a garden salad. Worth it if you like greek salads. We look forward to our next dinner there!

The food was really good and the atmosphere was really cozy. I had the petite sirloin and it was so tender and cooked perfectly! The only reason they didn't get 5 stars was their drink preparation. I ordered a Tom Collins and they added (ruined with) grenadine. It looked like a Shirley temple. When I questioned the pink drink they said I've been making them wrong... Please don't argue with me as a customer. I've had Tom Collins in 3 countries and 6 states. Never ever seen it made with grenadine. Guess it must be a Minnesota thing? If I'm ever in the area again I will for sure eat here again but will stick to coors light. Can't mess that up, right?

Fab salad. Always ordered hazelnut crusted walleye. Tried the new menu, the walleye was really good. Loved it. Companion ordered a dish I did not recognize. Said it was like Greek paella. Perfect description! This place fills up quickly on week ends and can get pretty noisy. I like to go on week nights.

Not from here, but stopped in based on Yelp... Could not be more happy with the decision. Part one : The apps... We had the octopus, the Tuna Poke (on the specials menu) and oysters 2 ways... The octopus was, for the first time ever in my experience, completely tender... The poke has a fresh taste... It was delectable. I am not much of an oyster fan, but it put both my wife and daughter in a great mood, so must have been special. Part 2: The soup. It was clam chowder... It did not disappoint at all and hit all of the proper notes. My wife also said, and she is a ranch enthusiast, that it was the finest example of restaurant ranch she has ever had... And she said ever a couple times. Main course: The Ribeye. Amaze balls! Not often is black and blue raw as well prepared or as flavorful... The sides held to the same high standards set by all the other elements of the meal. End of the day, this was our last meal before we get on a plane and end our vacation... And we could not have made a better decision... I would put this place right up there with the big name chef haunts... Truly great!

It really was just ok. Small portions for the price but it taste great. Great ambiance. Small, intimate, and quiet. Great for a date night. The wait staff was very nice and courteous. The only reason it's only getting three stars is because of the price to food ratio.

This place is a true gem! It's a modern Greek twist on a classic Midwest supper club! They know how to cook meat and then they take that perfectly cooked meat and pair it with a great mixture of spices and veggies. They also have great Greek flavor mixed into their dishes. I recommend the pork tenderloin with a cilantro white cream sauce, on a bed of onions mushroom and chorizo! WOW! Great staff who knows the menu and the great wine selection! It's also got that great vibe! My wife and I finish out wine and dinner and then went to enjoy the bar a finish out the nice with a great glass of 10yr Tawny port! It will be our go to spot from now on!

I first discovered Phil's a few years back when we went at the recommendation of my parents. Simply delicious. I've been here on a few occasions since with my family and have been pleased with everything I've tried. The steaks are tasty, the Greek platter is generous, and the soups are rich and creamy. It was hard to pick just one side! I will certainly be back in the near future.

One word: Ribeye. If only I could eat you everyday! This ribeye had so much flavor and was so tender. It was awesome! I think it was pretty big, 20 oz? but me and meat... I don't know what happens. I ate the ENTIRE THIING. I should have stopped, I know I should have, but I couldn't. This steak seriously competes with Ruth Chris, however, it's only $28 here! I could do this weekly! Yum! Went here off a friends recommendation, her status just increased to best friend! I love that the place is casual too. It's a little log cabin and you would be ok wearing jeans here or shorts, or your fat pants to eat a 20oz steak. :) Eat your meat!

Wow, I cannot believe it took me this long to go here- I have heard nothing but people bragging this place up and for once they were all correct. The parking lot was full and I said to dining partner--well it must be good--we went in and were told a 45 minute wait but luckily two people at the bar got their seat so we strolled on up and sat right in the center of bar. Two fabulous drinks later--a French martini with the goose--we had decided to split a few things so we could try more items and still leave room for something sweet. We had gnocchi with duck confit--wooowwwzza...that was spectacular. The Greek people know how to make gnocchi too. We also had beef skewers with gorgy cheese and caramelized onions. So damn good. To top of this mouth carnival we had chocolate turtle cake with a truffle on the side and some sea salt whipped cream. I'm going back to Phil's as soon as I can swing it.

So I was totally starving and we wanted to take our two looney teen boys out to eat somewhere new. I had a crazy CRaZY day working the ER, we got to Phil's and they quoted us a 30 minute wait. I ALMOST....almost said SCReW it and left but we decided to wait. We got a table in 10 minutes (YaY!) and were greeted by our awesome server in like 5 seconds! The place is pretty small as it is a VERY old building and pretty loud but it worked. The minute I opened the menu my eyes bugged out of my head. Their online menu doesn't really reflect the level of awesomeness I saw before me. I had a VERY hard time deciding cuz so many dishes looked soooo good. The server told me their steaks are all hand cut and their seafood came in fresh today. So I guess I needed BOTH!!! We ordered some fresh oysters 2 ways. They were the FRESHEST and most buttery creamy oysters I've had outside of the Deep South. One was an orange basil and the other a champagne citrus. OMG to die for! My side salad choices were off the HOOK!!! I chose the Duck Confit and Crispy duck skin salad with trumpet mushrooms and these little, crispy, lightly tempura battered artichoke nuggets. It was one of the best salads I've ever had, let alone a side salad that you can also order in 3 sizes. My main dish?? I ordered a petite strip steak with one of their many choices of toppings, the Gorgonzola Crema with mushrooms and Caramelized Onions cooked to a perfect medium rare. Since I also was craving seafood I chose the add-on of broiled jumbo shrimp, and it was SERIOUSLY, not messing around FRESH, and cooked to perfection. I chose the grilled broccolini and feta side as I do low carb. My hubby ordered the Tour of Greece plate and shared it with one of the boys. It was HUGE and featured an awesomely seasoned Pork chop, spanakopita, Gyros, orzo, and a Greek version of lasagna. HOLY COW (or should I say, LAMB?) that Gyro meat and tzatziki sauce were the freshest and most flavorful I've ever tasted (no joke). My other son ordered the build your own STEAK burger with thick cut bacon and premium Swiss. He said it was a 10 out of 10! I can't wait to go back and try the salmon with scallop mousse with crab croquette and the blue crab stuffed trout. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this restaurant and I will tell you the service was equally outstanding. I'm glad I didn't say SCREW IT!

  • Rita P.

The menu is not extensive, but the food is delicious! The house vinaigrette for the Greek Salad is creamy and the feta cheese is not too sharp, which is much appreciated! The spanakopita is warm and flaky. Worth a stop over. :). Give this place 4 stars just based on the vegetarian entree options. :).

Recently dined at Phil Tara's Hideaway on a Saturday night and our experience was pretty good. We arrived early around 5:30 PM and were seated right away. Most of the patrons appeared to be in a range of 65-80 years old so we felt like the youngest ones in the place. The interior is very cabin like and reminded me of historic places you would see out west in Montana, Wyoming or Colorado. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. The food was pretty good but not exceptional but definitely a good value for the price. We shared an appetizer (the potato gnocchi) and it was fantastic. I then had the small filet mignon 6oz, the potato soup and mushrooms on the side. The steak was ok ..the soup great and the mushrooms were pretty bland. My wife had the stuffed trout after a recommendation from our waitress and she didn't care for it. Upon hearing that our waitress felt so bad that she gave us a free desert to share. We will definitely go back to this restaurant again and would recommend it to others.

What a gem! You would never expect to find a log cabin off Hwy 36 in Stillwater; north woods ambiance. Our waitress was amazing. Very knowledgable and helpful. She shared what her favorites were from the menu and had obviously worked here for a long time and enjoyed her work. We ordered the duck and trout. Both were excellent. The gnocchi that came with the duck was very tasty. Also ordered the lamb duo which was very good. Everything is fresh and sauces/dressings made in-house. Couldn't have been better! We will definitely come back.

Delicious! I haven't been to the Hideaway for almost 20 years. Not sure why it took me so long to get back there, but I can tell you that we'll be back often. Two words: lobster bisque. I could have eaten just a bowl of that and gone home happy. It was SO good that I shamelessly made the three others in our party eat off of my spoon. I got it with the broiled shrimp, which was also wonderful. My son-in-law said that the Tara steak was the best he's ever had. My husband loved the truffle burger and fried potatoes, and my daughter ordered the "small" gyros, which was huge. Food was great, drinks were great, service was great. Make reservations for your next special occasIon. You will love it!

We came here to celebrate my birthday a few months after the fact and it was incredible. We arrived early, before the huge rush, were seated promptly, and our server was excellent. She knew the menu, drinks, and was just overall super friendly and fun! We had the scallops as an appetizer and they were perfection. You know how scallops can be if they are overcooked but these were smooth and silky. We both upgraded from the house salad to a glazed pear salad or something like that but next time, I am sticking to the basic house salad. I didn't care for the upgraded salad nor did my dining companion. For our entrees, we had the fried shrimp and steak and an add on of gorgonzola cream for the steak. I eat steak about twice a year and I ate every last bite. I actually got one of the smaller steaks but it was plenty for me. The puree potatoes were delicious. I most definitely recommend those. I saw the burgers and they looked amazing. I am already thinking I will have one next time. Dessert was mehhh...So unmemorable, that I can not even remember what we shared but it was nothing great. Not enough to decrease my rating but next time, I will probably skip dessert. We met the owner outside and he was a super nice, down to earth guy. You can certainly tell an establishment when the owner is present vs. not present. My Dining Companion says he also saw him the last time she was there as well. Kudos to the owner for having such a presence at his business!

Tara Hideaway serves a likeable combo of Greek/Mediterranean influenced cuisine and American supper club food, making it a great place if you are dining with a mixture of sophisticated and not-so-adventuresome friends. It's good, solid food but not off-the-charts wonderful. I'd give it 4 stars for food alone. I don't come as often as I'd like because the place is usually packed. Today I had a 5 oz Tara steak, side salad, and Greek potatoes. Hubby had Mediterranean walleye, clam chowder, and fries. Everything was standout, and I'm happy that they offer smaller versions of most entrees. Greek potatoes are an item to share: thick slices of deep-fried spuds topped with feta. Tasty but heavy. On other occasions friends and I have had roasted pear and gorgonzola salad, 1/2 Greek salad + 1/2 order gyros, and California burger. We would happily order any of these again. Burger had great charbroiled flavor, and the crispy, potato-y fries were just yummy! Salad ingredients were fresh, crisp, green, and tasty, with no wilted leaves (I'm amazed at how often I get questionable greens, even at "nice" restaurants.) The place gets extra points for its warm, friendly atmosphere. It's well-kept and agreeable but not fancy, with log cabin construction, solid wood tables, and pleasant lighting. Service was efficient and accommodating with no snootiness and no fawning I-want-to-be-your-best-friend creepiness. The people who work here, from host to kitchen staff and owner, seem committed to giving you straightforward, tasty food. It feels like they want you to have a good time and come back. show less

Six of us met for dinner on May 16 in celebration of birthdays. This was not my first visit, however it will be my last. Collectively, we ordered steaks, fish, shrimp and a burger. The food was fairly decent however the ambiance left a lot to be desired. There was a lack of elbow room-a person sitting behind me bumped in to me numerous times-note my BMI is less than 24. The noise level was off the charts-wait staff had to shout to be heard. Forget conversation with your dinning mates-unless you both know sign language - there will be little or no conversation. One of our dinning mates was seated near an air vent causing him to be cold. Bottomline - if you want to have dinner where the noise level exceeds OSHA standards so you can test your new hearing aids, this is the place.

Phil's has some of the best food I have ever experienced. They use fresh ingredients that produce some amazing flavors. I have seen some of Minneapolis's big time restaurant owners dining here which means it must be amazing!

Listen the food is great. The service was great...the host? Well that's where we loose a star. My first time at this establishment and I've read great things. The low down: I have friends in the food industry who say to get the fish special cause it's always fresh and flavorful. Yep...twas great. Alaskan Halibut was worth it. The steak is sensational and tender. The crowd is typically is in their 40's-60's. The atmosphere is causal nice. Cute smallish cabin vibe, very vintagey feel. They don't take reservations and its packed by 6pm on the weekends. Everything was exceptional except for the host...I had to ask my friends about him and they told me he's just that way and not to take it personal but geez...he didn't even take me in when he greeted me at the door and was walking away before I had a chance to ask a question. Than he forgot he spoke with me and re asked me for my name and people in my party...less than 2 minutes later. Still didn't really take me in and was off to the races again. It kind of bummed me out...but he did seat us quickly. Food rules though!

Is it a bar? Is it a grill? It is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in the area! Family friendly, casual and more importantly clean. The food isn't gourmet, but it is the right meal when you want to avoid chain restaurants let alone fast food. The food portions are the right size for the right price.

The food was as good as it gets! Very small, but cozy. Perfect place for someone that is hard of hearing.

Excellent food. Go a little early or you may gave a long wait. Service was excellent, shrimp was crisp, steak was tender and seadoned well with bruschetra on side. The Greek plate was amazing. Kids meals were good but a little pricey. $6

Phil Tara's has become our restaurant of choice whenever we have a special occasion to celebrate. We went for our Valentine's date this year and I had the best prime rib that I've ever had and my girlfriend had her usual, duck breast & gnocchi with the duck confit salad. One item of advice: if you are coming with a large group (6+), make sure to call for a reservation and make it clear that you have a large group. A group of friends wanted to join us for dinner since we're always raving and when we called to set up a reservation we were told they don't take them on the weekends. When we arrived at 5:15 (trying to beat the rush), we were told it was going to be over 3 hours until we get a table.

Yum, Yum, Yummy! Stopped in here on a whim after seeing a movie last night and I am so glad I did! Tight quarters but it's a cute cabin feel with great service and excellent Mediterranean food. We had a 45 min wait but didn't mind at all. The place is so cute inside we wanted to extend our experience. As far as the food: We started with Mixed Green Olives for 2 bucks! Grilled Octopus and Gyros. All wonderful ! Dinner was Mediterranean Walleye and the Salmon Special. They were both cooked to perfection and succulent. We can't wait to go back!!

Well worth the wait. Grab a drink at the bar and people watch until they can get you a table. It will be busy, loud and crammed but the food is like no other. Their prime rib sets the bar for all others. Full of flavor cooked to perfection and extremely tender. Athenian potatoes for a side are my favorite, anything you order will be good. Their fish is as good as any and if your lucky maybe they'll have their tuna sliders for a special. Finish your meal off with some hand made truffles for $2. The great thing about this place is the food is perfect and so is the price. I'd go here over Mannys and Murrays every time.

We got there a little early, so we were seated right away. Very pleasant attentive waitress. Crostini with beef tips appetizer was delicious. Kids meals were good, but a bit on higher price end of $6. I had broiled shrimp and it was very good.

We love this place! The food is amazing, the atmosphere is cozy and the staff is wonderful! On our visit last night, I had the Greek Chicken and it was excellent! The chicken was done to perfection. My boyfriend had the Pork Tenderloin and it was amazing! And we had a fun waiter who made our experience even better with great service! This place is always busy for a reason. This is a very special place and we'll be back again and again!

Steak done perfectly. Prices are right. House steak which was excellent I think was $17. 10 ounce filet which was Melt in mouth $30. Great atmosphere. Expensive beer and drinks, no tap beer.

Exceptional food, very reasonable prices. I took away one star for the noise level, which seems usual for this place given other Yelp reviews. Not a great spot for a romantic date because of that. But the food...wow. We had the octopus and another nightly special (rock shrimp and bay scallops) for apps. The octopus is really special. Use the grilled lemon it is served with generously. We had the grilled lamb chops and NY strip with porchini truffle butter. Our of this world. Both are as good in flavor and cooking as I've had at high end steakhouses across the U.S. Get the orzo side dish (included with entrees). It's perfect. Service was also great. I'll definitely recommend to my friends and return when in the area.

Love this place! Great Greek food, service is always top! Quite little location with an unique history of clients. Family owned and operated, and the food is always consistent! Thanks! Get the scallops!

We came to Stillwater two years ago after our wedding for a few days of respite and found Phil's and it was amazing back then. We decided to revisit for our anniversary and let me tell you what an amazing dining experience we had yet again. I cannot gush enough about the staff. Amazing and attentive, witty, personable and very knowledgeable about the food, the staff really makes for a great atmosphere and dining experience. We even saw Shannon again, (Ohhhhhh I hope that's her name she's really great!) We were pretty excited to see a familiar face at Phil's. I had ordered my steak wrong and she took it back to have it re fired. It was my fault for ordering the filet incorrectly but she didn't even bat an eye about it. Excellent service, excellent food, great atmosphere. We will definitely be making the trip again, but we certainly won't wait as long this time!

This place is unbelievable. It is about the only place that I have been that a table can order 4 different things and all 4 were great. I have been there 3 times with another couple and everything that we had was very memorable. We love to go out to eat and this is the standard by which all others will be judged. Whether it is steak, pork or seafood, everything had been wonderful. It's hard not to get too full on the entree, but DO leave room for the homemade desserts. They are sooooo worth it! I never order dessert but do so here. It's always busy, but worth the wait to us. !

Loved this place and the relaxing atmosphere! We had the burger and gyro. Their ingredients are fresh and hand-crafted like the burger and ice cream. Looking forward to trying out their dinner menu.

I have only been here once, but I will definitely be back. It was date night with my husband and we were told to try this place out. I had gnocchi as a starter and it was awesome! It came sprinkled with Parmesan or some kind of cheese. They were out of a few of the specials, which made me just want them even more. But I got a steak with potatoes and my husband got a Brie burger. The flavors just blew us away! It was kind of crowded, but the food took me away from all of that. The server was also very nice.

There were two things to weigh for a review: FOOD and ATMOSPHERE. The food was excellent (steak and fish and desserts top notch) and prices were reasonable for fine dining, but there were other things worth mentioning. First, 3 of us felt so stuffed into a small table setting. There's not a lot of elbow room for all the plates they bring to the table. Can't imagine if we had had 4 people there. Second, you feel like you are right on top of other people's tables. Third, the male server wasn't at all patient w/our mom who's elderly and had trouble hearing over the super loud restaurant. Fourth, I generally don't find restaurants an issue with noise but this place was very loud. I couldn't stand it after 20 minutes so enjoying my meal wasn't on my mind by the time we were served. I really don't find it a great atmosphere when you have to shout or endure other loud conversations or cackling laughs at other tables. The crowd is an older crowd for the most part. Bathrooms were so tiny and freezing. The food was great but hard to enjoy in this overcrowded-feeling SUPER LOUD atmosphere.

Highly recommend this place, classic supper club feel with a Greek twist. It was hard to choose what to order because everything sounded amazing. We got the gyro appetizer that was amazing, it could have been my meal. My husband loved his steak and I loved my stuffed walleye. Cocktails were also delicious! High quality food and service, we will be coming back!

WHAT???? Hands down the best little secret spot in Stillwater. You should not go....because I want to keep this as my little secret spot! We heard about this place from a friend of a friend and headed out for lunch. My lunch was....insert sound of mind blowing...awesome. I love Greek food and it isn't that common in Scandinavia...urm I mean Minnesota...so to find this spot has made my year. The Mediterranean Hash dish is EPIC, only way to describe it. Now don't get me started on the building - it's the coolest little log cabin - I would have assumed the menu was all game meats - but it houses a true treasure of Greek / Mediterranean cuisine.

Another great place for Gyros and roasted potatoes, great staff been their twice for my birthday had really good soup and pita bread in really cool log cabin , eat here then go to Smalley's to hang out with local bartenders for kill devils rum.

Definitely worth the wait for dinner on a Saturday night. This is a carnivore place, and will not disappoint. The service is always great. Beef and seafood are always fresh, beautiful, and generous. Treat yourself to the olives! This is definitely our favorite place for dinner in all of Stillwater!

I visited the Hideaway for the first time in a number of years this past weekend, and it was just as great as I remembered it. It's on the frontage road to 36 before you actually get into downtown Stillwater, and you probably would not even see it or pay attention to it if you didn't know it was there. It basically looks like someone's small cabin. However, the secret on this place is out because you will surely wait for a table here unless perhaps you arrive at 4 p.m. A group of four of us got there around 6:15 p.m. on a Saturday night and were told it would be a 45 min to an hour wait. Be prepared to have a wait when you go here -- the place is small and it's delicious, so they get a good crowd moving in. I think they do a good job of turning tables though, and we got in right at about 45 minutes. In the summer, you can have a very pleasant wait out on their deck with a cocktail. They have a great selection of food here -- steaks, seafood, chicken, pork chops, pasta, and some Greek specialties. I got the 5 oz Tara steak on my most recent visit -- a perfect size and a great value for a nice cut of meat at $11! And that includes soup or salad and a side. $11! Insanity. Overall, reasonable prices, solid food, and a cozy atmosphere -- I will definitely be back when I am on the east side.

Our group of friends decided to meet for dinner tonight. They are in St Paul and have eaten here over 10 years ago. We were first timers coming from Lakeville, so it was a long drive. Ordered the porterhouse. Now I must qualify myself as someone that has tried a lot of the top steak places in the TC: Ruth Chris, The Strip Club, Mannies, Murrays, Fogo, Porterhouse...even had the Rancheros in Webster last month. So I think I know good steak when I eat one. Well this one made top 3 for sure in my book. The meat was very tender and tasty. Pure bliss is all I can describe. Worth every penny.

I would give this place a 4 and a half stars, because it isn't perfect, but if you order the right thing you will leave feeling like you just got back from your honeymoon. I've been there at least 20 times, and I now stick to one meal (shared with my girlfriend), which is the Duck (you have to get it medium) and a salad upgrade to the pear and gorgonzola. Cheese curd appetizer is optional. This sounds pretentious, but when I moved away from Minneapolis, I assumed I wouldn't be anywhere near a decent restaurant. I was so wrong. Phil's is right up there with Christo's and the other handful of well known Greek restaurants in the Twin Cities. I've tried the greek chicken, the gyros, lamb chops, and almost every appetizer. Tried a pasta with shellfish one time, it was not up to their standards. The duck is their dish that really stands out, because it has gnocchi tucked underneath and they stay hot and soak up the sauce, so the dish will rock your world throughout the meal. There are even trumpet mushrooms in it, although the menu doesn't mention this for some reason. I'm not a steak guy, but the steaks look great. The unhealthy stuff on the menu is the best, so if what you've ordered sounds like it will lead to a triple bypass surgery in your future, you have chosen wisely. Eat there and be happy.

For being an off-highway northwoods log-cabin style restaurant /bar with a dirt parking lot, the actual food and dining experience is something entirely different. I started with the grilled octopus and it may've been my favorite thing - the lemony octopus was served with its accompaniments in a deconstructed style that was just tasty together. I had an entree from their specials menu - halibut with spring peas, leeks, frisee - and was not disappointed. I went with an upgrade to the pear and gorgonzola salad and am very glad I did! Their desserts are fantastic and we were told all but one or two are made in-house (yay!). I had the budino and it was so rich I couldn't finish it - but I would very much recommend it, the salt/sweet balance is nice. Minus one star because my husband ordered a lamb shank and it was served on cheesy orzo. He said the lamb was very dry and that he would never put lamb with anything that tasted so close to mac and cheese. He was pretty disappointed with his meal. Hopefully we'll stop by again - their menu has many, many good looking things on it, and the specials/seasonal menu had at least 3 additional entrees and a salad (if not sold out).

Nice ambiance, although a little crowded (heard people complaining about bumping elbows with others at another table) and loud, but it was a busy Sunday evening. Great service. Not really a Greek restaurant, as they claim to be as most "true" Greek dishes were missing. Had the lamb shank and it was way overdone and dry and lacking in flavor. Seemed a little over-priced, considering it wasn't downtown Mpls.

The duck and gnocchi were amazing! The oysters rockefeller were different than I've had at other places, but were excellent also. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. Tim and Cheryl are both excellent servers. As you may be able to tell, I can't say enough good things about this place.

DROOL! YUMM! We came here with my friend's grandma who I guess used to work here when she was younger. We did so as sort of a lark, but also because it was close. The menu is a fusion of greek and american in the best ways possible. I ended up getting the gyro melt which was the favorite of the table. It was delicious meat (not sure what kind, assuming lamb) with cheese on pumpernickel. They give you some yogurt sauce that you can spread yourself which just adds a whole new richness to the sandwich. I only planned on eating half the sandwich but ended up eating it all it was so good! Would love to come back for dinner or lunch again. So yummy and well worth it.

I am a total foodie. Trust me that what I am going to say comes straight from the heart. I wasn't AT ALL excited when our friends chose Phil's for OUR anniversary. I'm Greek and most Greek restaurants leave me saying, "Real Greek people don't eat this." My husband had steak and he thought it was awesome. (I tasted it and agreed.). But I had the SCALLOPS and they were the single best bite I have ever had in a restaurant. The ambiance is okay, but I dream of those scallops. You really should give them a try.

I was pleasantly surprised by PTH. Driving up to it you do not expect what you will get inside. It is off of a major road (36) with a gravel parking lot. It is very cute inside as it is a cabin and pretty small. This is what makes it a little loud as some reviewers mentioned. Overall I was happy with the service. We had a group of 8 and only had to wait about 20 minutes at 7 PM on a Friday. The bartenders were very nice in the meantime and were able to whip us up some good cocktails. The food was good as well - I ordered the scallops and a bunch of others ordered the duck. Everyone was happy with their dishes and I would return. They were well prepared and the plates looked very professional. I would go back if I was in the area but I wouldn't necessarily take a special trip from the Twin Cities to visit just PTH. However, I do like to occasionally go antiquing in Stillwater and this would be the perfect dinner spot.

Nice little place in Stillwater! With their limited lunch menu your main options will be gyros, burgers, or salad. We order three of the starters for our business group: Spanakopita, onion rings and gyros; personally, I am not a fan of onions but those were extremely delicious, as were the other two items made with great quality! The truffle gorgonzola burger was one of the best burgers I've had, though very rich and may not be for everyone. I ordered fries with mine, which were 'real fries: potatoes, oil and salt=great! Though the food was awesome, the service was slow. With only a couple of servers to care for the entire cabin-full of lunch hungered people, we had to wait a little to order, in between drink fill ups and our meal. It is a little out of the way at the end of a road, but I guess that's where they get the 'Hideaway' from. The parking lot is completely dirt, so after snow has been melting its all mud! We did NOT enjoy walking trough that (no way of going around) in our work shoes and then tracking it all into our trucks and cars. For a good lunch, it's still worth it to stop in!

This was the most amazing dinner that I have had in a long time. Being from Chicago we have plenty of great restaurants but nothing like this. The Roasted Feta App was amazing. Along with the Apple and brie. All the salad dressings are homemade and awesome. I had the lobster and filet topped with the Gorgonzola crust. TO DIE FOR! Add a bottle of Cakebread Cab. Perfect dinner! We ended with a flourless chocalate cake. Truly a great meal with great service. Will be back for sure whenever I'm in the area!!!

Went here for a birthday dinner with my wide. They have a nice menu of standard items (steak, etc.) but they do a nice job of putting their own flare on even traditional items like the seafood. Everything we had was well prepared and they catered well to my wife's gluten free needs. We both had the stuffed grilled trout which was great. They have a decent wine menu and some nice local beers. The interior is nice and warm (rustic). My only negative is that I think they pack the people in a little too tight. I guess that's the issue with a place that's small but has great food and a great atmosphere!

I must echo Jim H., never had a bad meal here. I eat here 2 - 3 times a year and have so for the last 6 years. Great food in a pretty, old fashioned log cabin setting. They had a few new things on the menu since I'd last been here so I had the Walleye Potato Cake appetizer (day's special). Fresh flaked walleye pressed with mashed potato shaped into a tiny cute little patty, deep fried topped with a smidge of aioli and tiny bacon strips. Yum! The fish was flaky and delicious and paired well with the sauce. Yes, the cake is tiny, but 1 cute li'l cake was only $1.50 and was enough of an appetite whetter for me. Also new since I last ate here was the Confit & Breast of Duck. Seriously one of the best meals I've ever had. Skin-on slices of med-rare duck breast (they ask you what temp you'd like it to be cooked to) over duck confit, sauteed wild mushrooms (I saw crimini, shiitake, and I believe sliced trumpet or king oyster mushrooms), truffle scented pillowy gnocchi with a red wine sauce. Oh. My. God. So delicious. The duck was cook perfectly to med-rare. I don't know how they did it, but it seemed as if the fat between the skin and breast had been removed and the skin reattached so that it was only tender meat with a thin crispy layer of skin. The confit was salty and flavorful, so good with the mushrooms absorbing all the fatty richness. Another layer of flavor from the delicate little fluffs of gnocchi that happened to be gently truffled to accentuate the whole mushroom flavor that's going on. Amazing. I'm drooling thinking about this meal again. It's as good as anything I've had at the 112 Eatery, which is probably my favorite restaurant. I wish I had room for dessert so that I could order another Confit & Breast of Duck! My husband ordered the 6 oz. tenderloin filet, perfectly cooked to rare, with a side of Yukon Gold puree (more whipped than pureed). My mother in law had the broiled shrimp scampi with baked potato. Those, of course, are old standards at Phil's, and were excellently executed, as usual. The parent in laws are regulars there and our service reflects it with very friendly funny sweet waitresses and sometimes a visit from Phil himself who obviously takes pride in his restaurant --- I've seen him in there every time I've eaten there. I truly think this is a destination restaurant, worth the 30 min drive from Minneapolis. And if you're already in Stillwater, then stop reading this, put your pants on and get to Phil's!

The best meal I've had this year-easily. We started with meze- shrimp mojo verde, dolmades and grilled octopus. Each was very good. The octopus was perfectly cooked and accompanied with paper thinly sliced picked cukes and kalamatas. My son has a bowl of avgolemano- I may have butchered the spelling, but they didn't butcher that soup. It was lemony, creamy and filled with chicken and artichokes. Amazing soup. My wife had walleye and licked her plate. Her fried potatoes with feta were especially good. My son had the top sirloin and it was one of the best steaks he's ever had. I had the duck confit with medium rare breast slices. Everything about this dish has been described in previous reviews, and they were all right on- except that I ate the whole thing at once. No leftovers for me. Our waitress was perfect, very nice, in and gone. Phil's is tight and noisy, but the food makes you forget that. Except that we sat next to a table with the most interesting, loudest man in the world describing his incredible life to his inlaws who were clearly unimpressed with all of his amazing accomplishments. Free floor show, cool! Go to Phil's. It is amazing!

Never had a bad meal here. The Mediterranean pork chops are my favorite. Huge portion and very good. Loud and busy place. You may find it hard to get a beverage while you wait for a table. A beverage server to help those who are waiting - usually a considerably large crowd - would be a terrific idea! We've found that with a group of more than 4 it pays to go late. They have a hard time seating bigger groups. As an old friend once told me - "Better to be small and crowded than big and empty." The parking lot is a mess - be prepared.

Phil's Tara Hideway is off the beaten path, so I'm really glad my in-laws found it. It's really busy on the weekends so make sure you get there early, but the food is worth the wait. They have a decent selection of entree's and beverages. I love to location as well. It's very rustic even though its right off the highway!
