Hypothetical conversation that I have never, in any way, been involved in. "So can I take you out tonight?" "Sure, where do you want to go?" "Um...." Preplanning is so overrated. The response is always Nacho Mama's. Mama's is an awesome early date location and here is why: -The side street entrance comes accross as sketchy and reminds one of a back alley in Tijuana--minus the dirty syringes. This may seem like a negative attribute, however, it makes a girl look adventurous and exciting, even though Nacho's will never, ever fail health inspection (another positive attribute!) and there are bed and breakfasts on every corner that do NOT rent rooms by the hour. -Fishbowl margs. Everyone is more exciting after one or two of Mama's delicious margaritas. Well priced, large quantities, and a great non-prescription mood enhancer. -Those big Chinese lanterns hanging overhead. Not gonna lie boys, us ladies love them. We feel like we are on a beach location somewhere and not in negative farenheit hell. Your odds get better the minute we see them. -Portions. Hungry Man and Mama went to war. Mama won and any man will leave in a food coma after one of her burritos. The menu is basic Tex-Mex. Nothing crazy. Just basic, well made tacos, burritos and all the things Minnesotans have come to expect in a Mexican restaurant. -Sexy Chicken Quesadilla. Who knew that by putting the word "Sexy" in front of "Quesadilla" you would create a dish no girl could turn down? Great flavor and for some reason I always feel as though it will make me skinnier based on name only. It doesn't. -Service. Always prompt, always friendly. Never overbearing. Water glass is never empty for more than thirty seconds. -Pricing. Unsure who is paying and how much cash to expect to throw down? Approximately $25 a person after meal, marg, and tip. Although if date is going extremely well, (or extremely badly) price can skyrocket based on drink factor. Fun place, great food. Throw in a couple crazy international travel stories (true or untrue is up to you) and your odds of a second date go up drastically.

I give the food a 3, but the prices are high, and you are crammed into a little room like sardines. We ordered 4 different things. The deep fried tacos and chicken fried chicken were probably the best. The smothered burrito was pretty good, but I've had so much better before. The cheese sauce they poured over the top tasted like it came out of a Fritos can. The Enchilada bake overall was ok, but they didnt warn that it was stuffed with a million jalapenos! It seemed more like a soup also. Beans are very spicy, which I kinda liked, but the rest of my group didnt. The rice was spiced ok but kinda cold and hard. I wouldnt go out of my way to eat there again.

Good food, huge portions - at least 2 meals per entree, no matter how hungry you are. Last time I went, I got the baked enchilada. Very good, but I hate beans and asked for it without them. The waitress gave me a hard time and told me the cook hates making changes on the orders blah blah blah. OK, I don't care if the cook hates it. If I'm paying for a $15 enchilada, you better give it to me how I want it without arguing. Didn't turn me off to the place though, the food's too good for that.

Giant Burritos you say. Fresh Mexican food and a nice outdoor patio in Stillwater... now I'm curious. I had a good friend tell me about this place and how great the food was. Checked out Yelp and heard about the giant burritos and other fair. Sounded good, just needed a reason to drive out to Stillwater. Well that isn't to hard to come up with. I am a fan of Stillwater and I must say the foodie side of me is finding more and more reasons to venture out that direction. This is a nice little place on a side street with a great little patio out back. Unfortunately the night we went the weather was not such to encourage outdoor dining (damn lighting and pouring rain). This place has a very inviting interior though as well. Brick walls, small but quaint seating with a little bar in the middle of it all. The service was good even though I had been warned about this. We sat right in front of the bar though so this may have helped our cause. Food was very good. Like the chips and Salsa, Salsa was great! I ordered the seafood street tacos and they were very tasty. The tortillas were fresh and home made. The fish was spicy without being over powering. The Guak was good and added to the taco nicely. My dinner date had a avocado wrap that had some nice flavor and was well put together. Overall a very pleasant stop. I will have to come back on a nice fall night and sit on the patio. Might have to try a burrito or the seafood chili relleno. They had several things that sounded good. Can't wait. KT

Get the corn! So good! Great drinks too! We enjoyed our food! The service was great as well. We had a party of 5-6 and got seating on a weekend pretty quickly.

I love mexcan food and have wanted to try this place for some time now. I convinced my co-workers that we should have our last lunch of 2012 here and off we went. Fortunately, the 6 of us were the first customers in the restaurant because otherwise we might not have been able to sit together! I read that this was a small place but it is REALLY small! Like, 10 tables total small. We ordered a variety of food, burritos, enchilada bake and street tacos and everything but the street tacos was insanely huge. You get 3 street tacos and you can choose 3 fillings which is great for someone like me who likes to try different things. I had the shredded beef, chicken and pork and it came with rice and beans. The pork was the best but I unfortunately saved it for last and couldn't finish it. All told, I probably had over one taco left on my plate and was pretty full. I thought the chicken and beef were good, but lacking in flavor. And they were too juicy and caused the corn tortillas to completely fall apart. I managed to steal a bit of the enchilada bake and it was quite tasty but HUGE. Everyone but me took leftovers with them. The general consensus was that everything was good but a bit on the pricey side. I think the comment was made that it would be nice to get smaller portions for less money. No one needs 3lbs of food for lunch.

My husband and I ate here yesterday and sat in the patio area.. I was definately pleasantly surprised with how fantastic the food was and the drinks were out of this world.. Usually drinks are weak and just ok but the margaritas were a 10!! Heading back there today for lunch on our way out of town. The service was really good. My advice is just stop in and try it!. The prices aren't terrible and I say this just because the food was that good!.. We'll be back

"Mexican food...in Stillwater??" That was the response to my answer, when asked where I ate dinner this past Sunday evening. And it was pretty tasty! Small, quaint dining room, nicely decorated. Our server was a bit scattered and slightly forgetful. Loved their salsa, add some hot sauce if you are a heat lover. STRONG margaritas, whew! One was more than enough. Guacamole is a "must have" and this one was a miss for me. Too much diced tomato, could have used a bit more garlic...and salt. The chips were salty, so it balanced things out a bit. Hmmm...maybe they planned it that way. Other diners thought the guac was perfect...go figure! The entire table either ordered the Smothered Burrito or the Classic Enchilada Bake. Both were really good. The Enchilada Bake (wth ground beef) had a sauce with a slightly smokey almost BBQ-esque flavor. Many of the other menu entrees looked really interesting too. Large portions, I'd definitely share an entree next time, because it left no room for anyone to try dessert!

Well...I loved the little entrance down the alley off the main street downtown. Small, yet cozy place. the person working was awesome. She was helpful, knowledgeable and seemed truly glad we were there. We took our time ordering and had some chips and salsa. Very good salsa. We were forewarned about portion size, but ordered our own entrees anyhow. My pal ordered a margarita. It was good. A little sweet for me, but they had a great selection of tequila. Anyways, our food arrived. The portions were mammoth. Seriously. So we all dug in. Everything was fantastic. Bite after bite. The Enchilada bake with shredded beef was enough to feed a family of 4! And the sauce was amazing. The shredded beef tasted like it had been simmered in your granny's crock pot. The spiciness level was bang on. The 'small' plate of chicken nachos were some of the best nachos I have ever had. The shredded chicken was so good. We ordered the fried ice cream for desert. It came out and it looked like a babies head. It was massive and fab all at one time. The 4 of us shared. Needless to say...I will be back.

This was the second resaurant that I tried in Stillwater a few years ago (only second to the old fashioned malt nad burger shop down the street). I will say that this and that place are the ONLY two places i have found worth eating at in Stillwater time and time again. We always have the saem thing- and always struggle to finish it. We bring sometimes more people JUST so we can finish the large chicken nachos- but no worries, we lamost never do, and no matter how soggy it is the next day, i still love it! This last time, we tried something new. We tried the smothered burrito and the fried avacado and sweet potato fries. If you like heat, get those fried fries, they are very good, but very spicy, including the sauce. The smothered burrito was delicious! They were very accomidating to make it vegetaruan with extra beans and veggies. I love this place, and i will be back time and time again.

I guess I need to be the Bad Guy here ,this is a Very popular spot and I don't get it other than Huge Portions but don't let the Size Trick you hid inside those tortilla shells are allot of Bean Filler and sauce ,I have been here twice in a month and first got a Chimichanga that could feed a small village it tasted ok but very little meat inside a ton of beans and rice filled it though it didn't taste bad I still would of liked to see some more meat ,the other order was a skirt steak ordered Rare and Came out Well and when we told our waiter he acted like we were insulting him but it was taken care of and remade the rite way but with extra attitude ,second time we were most disappointed when Shrimp & GRITS were ordered that came severed over Rice? No Grits anywhere on the Premises and when we Questioned the lack of Grits our waitress in a Real Snotty way said its Called Shrimp & Grits but its Not Served with Grits like we were suppose to know this! The Shrimp were wrapped in a Over Spicy Bacon this coming from a guy that has survived a Ghost Pepper Burger Challenge & our other item was the Mexican Lasagna witch looked allot like a Cheesy Soup Messy Sauce filled bowl with Minimal Meat again and a tortilla on top not the best effort put forth and Last thing Try Making YourOsn Chips! It Easy I do it All the Time! I'm sure they have some Good Thing but I'm still waiting to see it and I'm thinking it will be a Long Time for me to want to go back any time soon

Though the service was excellent, the food and atmosphere left something to be desired. We thought we'd have dinner in Stillwater the other night and for some reason Nacho Mama's popped into my head. So after we completed our business we headed over. The first thing that struck us was the sweltering heat in the building. I'm not sure if they just don't have air conditioning or if it was just out that night, but the few fans they had running just weren't cutting it. Fortunately we we got a table on the patio. Our waitress, who was running her butt off the whole time we were there and putting up with the world's most passive aggressive jerk trying to pass a coupon that had long since expired, was very friendly and attentive. I think it was her first night and she was right on top of everything which says a lot for their training and staff selection. The food, though, was another story. I had the fajitas which arrived sizzling on a skillet with a plate of toppings. The parts that weren't flavorless were WAY over-seasoned to the point where some of the slices of meat were literally crusted with seasoning. My girlfriend's enchilada wasn't much better. The margaritas weren't anything special, either, just margi mix, a couple of drops of tequila, and ice in a pint glass. Extremely weak. By the end of the meal we were hoping the check came quickly as were were fighting a losing battle with an army of flies. This is, of course, not the restaurant's fault, it's summer and we were outside, flies are just something you have to put up with. It just detracted from an otherwise pleasant patio experience. Over all the visit to Nacho Mamas was pretty mediocre. We've been there two or three times and it's always unimpressive. It's a shame, too. This place has the potential to retain some local flavor in a town that is slowly turning into one big strip mall.

Dinner the first night of our weekend. Ummmm.....how do I start..... The service was awful. Very rude. found that to be a theme in Stillwater, almost no matter where we went. The waitress was so rude that I am not even sure if the food was any good. So yes, the experience has an effect of the food. If you are going to eat Stillwater, I would suggest going elsewhere. After our experience, I have no reason to ever go back.

Had a wonderful birthday dinner here tonight for my 15 year old. The food was delish and the service even better! The 4 of us split 2 meals (Street Taco and Smothered Burrito) and a Guac appetizer and we were stuffed. Then they gave her a chocolate cake and a song! We sat outside in the patio, great time ; )

First thing, Nacho Mama's portions are ginormous. Not large, not huge, ginormous. The cost reflects the size. You can easily split the street tacos (3 tacos ~$13) for two people for a nice little lunch. The spot is small, cozy and the service is quite fast and friendly. It feels odd to have authentic Mexican food in Stillwater off main street, but the flavor and spice is quality. It isn't Tex-Mex or what you imagine Taco Bell esque food to be. They use quality Mexican style spices and flavor profiles. It's a super casual place and I would go again with a small group for lunch again or late night bar food. Larger than four could be an issue for the small place.

Who whould have ever thought you would find great Mexican food in Stillwater MN? This place is awesome! Great nachos, and huge plates which means you can easily go in and split a meal. Ive been there 3 times and all 3 times my food and service was great.

Nacho mamas is my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant and I live near West side St. Paul. The food is always fresh, hot, and delicious and no matter what you get the portion sizes are at least double what you get anywhere else. Since everything is made to order it's easy to incorporate vegetarians and picky eaters. The prices are cheap considering the fact that you can eat the left overs for at least one more entire meal! The staff is always polite, attentive, and warm, and the atmosphere is quaint and festive. Outdoor seating, but no reservations so get there early on Stillwaters busy nights, nacho mamas however is always worth the wait. I highly recommend the smothered burrito.

I have heard good reviews about this place so my wife and i decided to try it. We ordered a carafe of margarita $17. We shared and order of Shrimp and beef fajitas for about the same price. Prices here are on the high side compared to the other Mexican restaurants in the twin cities. They served us complimentary chips and salsa. we didnt like the sauce cause it was very sour. Margarita was ok , we've had better. The service was ok and it was rather busy that friday early evening. We did not like our fajita, the beef was tough and the flavor so so.

This used to be our favorite Mexican place, BUT...recently when placing an order for takeout the woman on the phone, thinking the connection was ended, called my wife a "fcking weirdo". My wife then called back and cancelled the order and told the guy exactly why, quoting the woman at which point he apologized for her. Moments later the woman called back and tried to claim it was a misunderstanding and that it was intended for a different customer. WHAT? Never again.

We arrived at a very busy time and it took a few minutes to be acknowledged at our table. After watching several tables who arrived after us get served, we flagged down a server. She did a great job of handling it and quickly got us taken care of with drinks and chips. I really appreciated that the service was great even with the rocky start! I LOVE Mexican food, and Nacho Mama's stands up to any other Tex-Mex restaurant in the Twin Cities (well, other than Los Ocampos). We started with some shrimp spring rolls (?!) with a great, spicy peanut sauce. The chips and salsa to start were also good - the salsa was actually spicy which was nice. I had a chicken chimichanga, which was really, really good - covered in "Nacho Daddy" sauce (tastier than it sounds) and served with refried beans. Boyfriend had a smothered burrito, which was covered in a not-so-great queso. I definitely wasn't a fan of the smothered burrito. Overall, it was good! I probably won't be driving back to Stillwater for it, but I was surprised at Nacho Mama's tastiness. Also - it's a little pricey for Tex-Mex, with entrees around $15/each.

Unique menu, we got an enchilada bake that was sort of like a mexican lasanga, really great! HUGE, HUGE portions, which my fiance loves. The only downfall to this place is it's name. After many Stillwater visits we always see the sign and just can't seem to bring ourselves to stop. But after finally giving in, we will definitely be coming back. Especially when it is warm and we can sit on their patio. The food is fresh and flavorful. The menu is diverse and makes you want to come back to try more options. Had the steak/mushroom Quesadilla and was very pleased. I was pleased that they let me do a mixed flavor margarita also, nothing like mango/raspberry. They do only have one size margarita - the large one.

I've just been once. So this could easily be a 5 star place...I almost never give 5 stars after the first time I try a place...however...this place ALMOST made the cut. Fresh, amazing food. Cozy, colorful, a fun place to find. Not good for large groups--so take your man or lady friend, a party of 4 friends tops, and everyone will be comfortable. Prices seem high at first glance, though, the quality is WORTH IT. If $12-$15 an entree is on your high end, order off the appitizer menu--great, non-greasy awesome unique appitizers for under $10. Great for lunch or dinner for sure!

We walked into this place, totally in judgment mode. "we're in Stillwater, getting Mexican?" "look how small this place is... not much space." So glad we gave it a shot. Chips could use an upgrade, but salsa was tasty. The menu was interesting, so we were somewhat encouraged.... I ordered a salad, he a sandwich, and both came out and were ENORMOUS. The seasoning on the chipotle steak sandwich was delicious! It was a little pricey, but this is Stillwater - at least the portions were big enough for 2 meals each. One of those experiences that was so surprisingly good that we both talked about it for weeks!

Cool little place. Stopped in for appetizers and a drink and left content. We had the nachos and the fried avocado and sweet potato wedges. Pretty good! Sound track consisted of mariachi band covers of "Hotel California". Yes, covers, as in plural. All different. Three of them. In a row. After the second of three came on we thought it was pretty funny but when the third started it was tough to keep our chuckles to a minimum. Good time!

Wow, is all I can say about Nacho Mama's. We had a group of 4 and split the smothered burrito and the chimichanga as well as a few carafe's of Margarita's :). The food was awesome, service was great. We will definately be back.

I try not to write bad reviews, but for 20.00 I bought a meal that was extremely disgusting. If I was 16 and a buddy threw on a bunch of valvetta cheese (yuck) and old non-cooked shrimp I could understand, but it would be free. I was starving, but only ate a few bites with no concern from the staff or kitchen. I absolutely think establishments that make bad food like this should be ticketed with potential food poisoning or false advertising.

Portions... Never an issue. Chicken burrito smothered can feed a family of four... Or just me. The taco preparation is very nice with fire grilled way of prep. Nice atmosphere and pleasant service. Will be back for good food.

Living is Stillwater, my husband and I have visited Nacho Mama's many times usually with a fairly good experience. The food has been good, though very large portions and not a place you would go frequently due to the heaviness of the food. However, on our last visit they refused a Restaurant.com coupon we had purchased that day for our visit! What's worse, some staff was rude about it, and got involved despite not being the manager or our server -- very embarrassing and made us look like we were being cheap for questioning their decision not to take it. On Restaurant.com it clearly states that you don't have to print the coupon but rather can show the server your iPhone with the code, however apparently they have decided not to allow that... so we had to pay for their disorganization, poor management and lack of customer-focused practices.

I've been waiting to try this place for so long but sadly I was pretty disappointed. First I swear the chips they brought were Tostitos from the bag. My meal was just OK too, tried a chicken, steak and shredded beef street taco platter and the steak was nearly inedible. Very over-seasoned and left a bad taste in my mouth. No one in the group loved the food. It was pretty spendy too even though the portions are huge. The service was great as was the atmosphere, maybe the kitchen had an off night.

I love Nacho Mama's and have had great food. However, they need to really revamp their service levels (not enough staff to make drinks or wait on tables). We were there this weekend and the poor young server was running around like a chicken. Doesn't make for happy customers especially since I was on my 2nd drink before my food arrived. Keep up the great food and kitchy atmosphere and really think about adding staff to help with a popular customer base. I would think twice about coming back if the service continues to be understaffed. This is the 3rd time we have experienced less than desired service.

Mexican food in really large portions. Some of the items seemed a little over priced, but by sticking to burritos and tacos the prices weren't too crazy. The smothered burrito and chimichanga were both delicious and the salsa and chips when were seated were good. The salsa was actually spicy. We got the spicy shrimp springrolls and these were a let down. The peanut sauce that came with them was really good, but the springroll wrap was way too thick and there was too much carrot inside. The ingredients were layed and not mixed so each bite had only one distinct flavor. Recommend sticking to more traditional dishes .

The wait was the only problem with this tiny little authentic mexican restaurant. The drinks were a little expensive but were served in large glasses so it was like having two at once- which made them more reasonable. All four of us ordered something different and everyone liked what they had- 2 different Margarita's, a raspberry mojito and a spiked banana shake (I think it's called a dirty banana). The salsa was spicy, which I love and the atmosphere is nice and warm. Again, it's not the biggest place but you don't feel crowed unless maybe you are still waiting to be seated. We all ordered different entrees but not one of us finished them because the portion size was so good. I had a shredded beef chimi and my lady had a shredded chicken burrito. Both were excellent! I was full on great food and still went home with leftovers! Bottom line- the best mexican food I've had in a LONG time! I can't wait to go back.

This is nacho run of the mill Tex-Mex place. I was here for some happy hour action on a sunny day and it didn't disappoint. I found their menu options to be innovative; Tex-Mex with a twist if you will. Tried out two appetisers: their bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers (homemade!) and the quesadilla (with chipotle steak, portabella mushrooms, jack cheese, and pico de gallo. The house margarita was perfect. Fantastico!

Stillwater is known for its unique downtown shops and restaurants, and Nacho Mama's is no exception! It's a little spendy, but it is so cute and cozy. They present a very fresh take on Mexican. My favorites are the fish tacos and the jalapeno chocolate chip cookies! I had them both during lent, so I'm not sure if you can get them year-round. Although, they do have chili-chocolate chip cookies. It sounds gross, but they are so warm and gooey! And, you don' t taste the jalapanos (or the chilis), but rather a heat - like you've taken a shot of hard alcohol. Margaritas and the chips and salsa are great too!

We really like this place. Great atmosphere and staff. Great food and drinks (margaritas are great, get a carafe!).

Cute patio, plenty of room for our stroller. When I looked at the menu, I had to wonder "what is in a $14 burrito"? But when it arrived, I realized it could easily feed a family of four, as it was about twice the size of Chipotle! I unfortunately ordered the enchilada bake, which was described as "Mexican lasagna".... well, I've had Mexican lasagna, and this was more like a bowl, with a tortilla on the bottom, beans, and a heaping mound of beef covered in cheese.... as a result, it was more like a bowl of hot grease. My husband's burrito on the other hand was delicious, so I realize that I just ordered the wrong thing. All the other patrons' meals looked delicious and enourmous. My strawberry daquri was made with real strawberries, too. The wait staff really hustled, and they kept their promise of only a 15 minute wait on a busy, beautiful Saturday night. I defintiely want to go back again, it was a nice change compared to the Freight House.
