My friends and I made the trek to Stillwater for a visit. Strolling about town, we came across Leo's, and decided to stop in for a bite. The patio was full of people with screaming children, who were all trying to grab the flower watering hose until the server finally put it away. After that, they all took turns dumping glasses of water on each other. When our server came out with our food (which took foreverrrrrr), she dumped my glass of water ALL OVER MY KHAKIS. Grody. At the end of the meal, after it took another foreverrrrr to pay our bill, she offered an ice cream cone as an apology for the ice water. We were kind of on our way out, and supremely stuffed, but at least the gesture was there. I'll likely try elsewhere in Stillwater before coming back to the malt shop. :/

Their jalapeno burger is pretty awesome. Get some cheese curds while you're there!

Delicious malts, splitting one is more than enough for two. I wish I would've split my burger too. Burgers were perfect, onion rings were yummy, and the fries were alright. There's indoor dining, an outdoor patio, and even a take-out window. Leo's is a cute mom and pop diner in the heart of downtown Stillwater.

Leo's is my favorite downtown lunch spot, especially when the weather is nice and the patio is open and I can watch the traffic coming and going across the Lift Bridge. (To answer your question, YES, I'm easily entertained :)) The food is simple--burgers, fries, malts, but delicious; I have never had a bad meal here. The service is always spot on, and one guy in particular (I think he is the owner?) can usually be spotted making the rounds making sure everyone is taken care of properly. The only reason I'm docking a star is because I wish for $8-$9 a burger, fries were included.

It was a spectacular day so this time we sat in the patio which probably made a big difference. The fries and burgers were cold and overcooked (or should I say, burned). The service was awfully bad thanks to the waiter that did not remember to bring us drinks (obviously refilling the glasses was not in his mind at all), did not bring silverware, nor napkins. The kitchen was filthy, there was food all over the floors, and so was the bathroom. It was a crazy weekend since the Jazz & Art Fest was going on so it was busy but the owners should know better after so many years in business. I think we would have been better off going to DQ across the street.

Stopped out for lunch today and ordered take away from the walk up window. I can personally tell you that the chili cheese dog rocks. Nathan's dog, none of that Cheez Wiz crappola. According to my husband, the french dip is wonderous. Chocolate shakes were good. Will def be back to eat again. I'm looking forward to trying the "muddy banana sundae"!

Fun, kind of greasy, 50's style diner. Dropped by here on a hot day (great choice). We had milkshakes and I had a turkey melt while my husband had a burger. Our sandwiches were tasty (and greasy as expected) and the fries were nice and thick without a lot of seasoning. The milkshakes were a good nice and you get the extra tin with the excess ice cream. Unless you're super hungry, I'd suggest sharing one of these. $33 total, so a pretty cheap date. Service was quick as well and I've always enjoyed the feel of a cutesy 50's style diner.

Our Internet research did not disappoint us on this one. Thank you to our waitress Grace for being such a memorable waitress. We ate at Leo's Grill & Malt Shop today for lunch. It was fabulous. I had my nephew order a cheese burger, french fries and a malt. My order was the Leo Melt with fries and a malt. Both of us thought it was fantabulous. I also introduced him to my secret way to eat a hamburger, fries and a malt. Don't tell anyone...you need to take a bite of your hamburger (remember to dip it in ketchup first) and then take a bite of a french fry. Last but not least take a spoonful of your malt. This mixture is a party in your mouth. He loved loved loved it. My husband had the Mucho Leo Burger and he absolute thought it tasted phenomenal. My sister had the Leo Melt too and my brother in law had the Mushroom Swiss.. They too enjoyed them immensely. When (not "if") you eat there remember to try my secret. Let me know what you think. Enjoy!!

This place was a really mixed bag for me. The location was great and it was fun to be in the area. This restaurant was decorated in lots of soda posters, with many old coca cola signs around. Pretty cool. It really felt like an authentic diner from years gone by. So, the food. I'll start with the great. Chili cheese waffle fries were fantastic. The waffle fries were crispy and delicious. The chili covered every bite so I wasn't left without chili at the end. Amazing. I then ordered a banana split. It was HUGE. They had to put a plate underneath to contain everything. The ice cream was premium ice cream and had great flavor. The banana was a great texture. Yet, it was a split with so much potential that I was crushed to see how little attention was paid to the rest of the parts of a banana split. A great banana split treats all toppings and ice cream as equals. This did not. The pineapple chunks/sauce and strawberry chunks/ sauce were non existent. It was alllllllll chocolate sauce, banana, and ice cream. I was so sad, because it felt like a letdown to have so many parts of it so great and then fumble on the strawberry and pineapple part of the split. Overall, not a bad place to go, but not as great as it could be.

If you are in town and want a good burger, fries, and milkshake, this is the place to go! They know how to make a good flattop Grill burger and amazing fries or onion rings. But the key is the top your meal off with a good old milkshake.

Best patty melt ever. Marble rye toast, sweet onions, mmm. Good coleslaw. Family had malts + frozen yogurt malts, each of which I sampled (suckers!) and were really good. But that patty melt... I'm still thinking of it days later.

  • Mary D.

Quite possibly the best patti melt burger I've ever had and I've had my share! Perfectly grilled juicy burger on a very nice grilled pumpernickle rye bread. Even the homemade chips were great! I'll deffinately be back!

Amazing strawberry malt! Super thick, creamy and a great flavor. Not synthetic tasting like you sometimes get. The waffle fries were perfectly seasoned and the onion rings were delicious! I can't wait to go back again.

I am a fan. I've eaten there twice and both times have been really good. Not quite as good as my end-all, Snuffy's, but they were my first love (in the burger/malt world anyway) so they are a tough act to follow. Prices aren't too bad, kind of steep but I believe that's because of their location. The food was a little salty, but they have free water. The service was great both times AND they even took my gluten-free bun to the kitchen to prepare my burger on it in place of their bun. How nice is that? Thanks for making a gluten-free foodie feel included in some good old-fashioned American food. I'll come back every time I'm in Stillwater.

Absolutely awesome shakes and Malts. The hamburgers are as good as the get. They are made individually and not the frozen patties.

Yummy! Yummy! In my tummy! This place is fantastic for a malt or milkshake. They offer yogurt malts which are delicious and slightly healthier. They have a side window for to-go orders which is convenient. I recommend a Nutella, raspberry yogurt malt! So delish! Now go take a stroll through the streets enjoying your treats.

We ate at Leo's the evening of 5/9. We ate here a couple years ago when they were voted Best Burger in the Valley. We really wanted a good burger, a malt and a banana split. We were both extremely disappointed. If this is still supposed to be a good burger, peoples' standards have been greatly lowered. Both our burgers were overcooked and tasteless. My husband asked for extra malt in his chocolate malt and he said not only did it not taste like chocolate but there was no malt flavor whatsoever. My banana split was okay. It's pretty sad when McDonald's has a better burger and DQ makes a better banana split with fake ice cream!

I am not sure why it took me so long to try out Leo's. It is definitely a spot that fits right into my wheelhouse perfectly. I had a spicy jalapeno burger of some sort and it was quite good. The meat was tasty, the bun was good, and the toppings were solid. It's not a ground breaking burger, but it does the job very nicely. The shake that I had was solid as well. I prefer the shakes from Mighty Fine Burgers in Austin more, but these were just fine and dandy. The big winner for me was the bowl of Chili. Damn this stuff was good! It's a great flavorful Chili that will warm you up on a cold day. Having lived in Texas for a long time now the spiciness level was definitely weak (it was Minnesota spicy), but it tasted good and it was satisfying. That's all that really matters in my world. If you ever find yourself looking for a quick, simple, and tasty bite to eat in Stillwater, you shouldn't walk past Leo's without stopping.

I like this place. It's a pleasant little step back in time in downtown Stillwater. Their malts, chili (order it supreme... the onions, cheese and sour cream make it amazing) and burgers are pretty tasty. I would also give the cheese curds a shot. Who the hell doesn't love fried cheese? I do have to recommend not getting their rueben, however. It's... pretty terrible. The meat is Buddig quality and the thousand island tastes like straight up mayonnaise. Blech. Anyway, this is a great little place to stop and have lunch while you're meandering around downtown. We usually make it a point to stop by when we're around.

We were headed to nearby Teddy Bear Park with our son and needed a place to stop for lunch. According to Yelp this place fit the bill and it did not disappoint. It was a coolish day so everybody was inside and not on the patio. They did find us a spot right away, though. We ordered Malts and Burgers, I went with onion rings and the wife had waffle fries. The malts were exactly what you'd expect from a good malt. Delicious! I like the fact that even the basic burgers come with lettuce, tomato, and onion by default. Ketchup, Mustard, and even Mayonnaise on every table, a nice touch. The staff was courteous and efficient, they really know how to turn over a table. Next time we're in Stillwater it will be hard to avoid this place.

We stopped at Leo's on a Sunday evening. We decided to sit outside on their patio. The inside was very full! Our waitress was very prompt to greet us and ask us for our beverage orders. I ordered the Cherry Coke b/c I could only assume that it was old fashioned cherry Coke - and i was right! It was very tasty. We decided to order a hamburger and the 1/2 & 1/2 basket (1/2 order of fries & 1/2 order of onion rings) Our appetizer arrived very quickly. The fries were good, but i really liked the onion rings. Our burgers arrived next. They were served with homemade kettle chips. I think the chips were probably my favorite part of the meal - I thought the burger was ok. It was served with lettuce, tomato, and pickles (the pickles were really good!). The meal was about $6.50. I gave Leo's 4 stars b/c the restaurant had character, they played 50's music, and had great service. I would go back and get a malt next time I go.

This restaurant seems to change hands a lot, but whoever owns it now is doing a good job. The patio is a wonderful place to eat lunch downtown Stillwater. The food is extremely good, great sandwiches, fries and malts. Service was good too.

The best malts ever!! Very good burgers and fries too. A must when you visit Stillwater.

  • Scott V.

Burgers were pretty standard, simple but good quality. But the malts are the real treat. We had the Turtle (hot fudge, pecan, and caramel) with frozen yogurt in place of ice cream. It was extremely delicious and really fresh, with tons of flavor. The one person portion was big enough for two (they give you the malt in a glass, but also bring over the container it was mixed in, so you can scrap the leftovers out of the bottom). The place has a funky 50s vibe too.

My girlfriend insisted on coming here and declared it to be the best burger she had ever had. This is a dangerous starting point because cheeseburgers are my favorite food so I eat a ton of them and tend to be very critical. But she, as usual, was dead-on-balls accurate. The burger was great. Better than great. So were the fries and my cherry coke. I love everything about this place and will absolutely come back here next time I am anywhere near Stillwater. A great burger with the perfect girl. How can I go wrong?

A few of us all had (junior sized) sundaes, which was about the right amount for an afternoon snack. The ice cream menu had a variety of usual (and some unusual) ice cream selections. I did enjoy my banana, fudge, and Oreo sundae. None of us had a meal, but it looked & smelled tempting. At least one of us may go back to get a meal here. I like the retro atmosphere here, which goes well with the antique-oriented stores in town. My general sense is that the restaurant is a bit small and given its downtown location, it is very possible that you'll have to wait in line or at least feel a bit cramped. Also, there's only one restroom, so this may be another line for which you'll wait.

Awesome old-time malt shop/ diner feel with fantastic malts, burgers, etc. It was a very fun place to eat. It was a little slower than i excpected, so that created a wait. Try for earlier/ later for lunch and dinner times to avoid a wait.

We stopped in Stillwater for an afternoon after moving my sister into her dorm room. We stopped at Leo's for lunch and were pleasantly surprised. They have classic american foods (blts, chicken tenders, burgers, sandwiches, etc) and the prices were great for a touristy area. We loved the decor of the resturant. We will defintely be back! Thank you!

Did the take out window, about a 15 minute wait but well worth it! We ordered a butterscotch malt and banana cream pie malt, super creamy and thick....very good and highly recommend a stop there! Prices pretty standard at about $5 each.

Cute little place in downtown Stillwater. We came here during a working lunch as a break and the place is like a corner, neighborhood diner. People here are super friendly, the food here is great quality at reasonable prices. The best part of the meal were their fresh kettle chips, which were amazing - perfectly fried, not too salty. Considering the rest of the meal was pretty sodium-laden (in a good way) and then heart-cloggingingly sweet (in a good way), I was thankful the chips didn't go along the same lines. Would definitely be back!

Great burgers and ice cream! This place has a very cute old school feel to it, like I should be wearing a poodle skirt or something.. If you are feeling hungry, I recommend the "big daddy". Really juicy and fatty just like a burger should be!

A great burger and malt shop in the heart of downtown Stillwater. I would recommend the Big Daddy burger with waffle fries. A great burger perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

  • Talia S.

The food is delicious homemade diner food. It sounds gross but you MUST have the chocolate coke! The seasoned sour cream with their waffle fries is also a must. Just ordered their pulled pork sandwich... I'm very picky... I need this recipe!! Not too sweet, full of flavor, meaty, not too fatty... NOM

I love the feel of this 50s malt shop in Downtown Stillwater. I had a hamburger with fries and I was definitely satisfied. The burger was cooked just right and tasted very fresh. The fries were okay, but the onion rings were perfect. I would definitely come back next time I am in a burger mood. Finally, the real highlight of the meal was the malts. I had the chocolate banana malt and it was heavenly. Portion was enough to split. I can't wait to try the chocolate peanut butter malt!!

This a quaint, curbside parlor right in the midst of downtown Stillwater. It's not far from the rivers edge. We ordered from the window off the street as we were just getting ice cream. The young guy who helped us was friendly and offered us samples. I opted for the chocolate. It was relatively quick service and we were able to eat outside in the hustle and bustle of Stillwater. The ice cream was only okay. It lacked the creaminess I prefer with only subtle flavoring. That's coming from an extreme ice cream critic though. That's also only vouching for the chocolate. We will definitely be back and I can't wait to try other flavors!

Leo's, located in Stillwater near the St. Croix River, reminds me of a diner than some relatives of mine have opperated in a small Minnesota town for several decades. The place is definitely a throw back to a time before I was born, when malt shops were far more common. It's hard to find places like this these days. The location is pretty good. Stillwater is a beautiful town along the river, and Leo's is right in the center of the action. Unfortunately, it doesnt have any view of the river from there which I like to take advantage of when I drive nearly an hour to get there. The interior is a throw-back, which I guess is either a big win or a big fail depending what your tastes are. As far as the food... It's pretty "meh" as far as Im concerned. There are a few other places in Stillwater Id prefer to dine at over Leo's. I think the only thing that really separates them are the malts/shakes which are always tasty. Not the best Ive ever had, but tasty nonetheless. Overall, if you are into restaurants with that type of theme, then this probably would be a great place for you to dine (my brother's girlfriend is really into the 50's decor/Elvis/etc. and she loved it). However, if you are looking for a great food experience, then there are probably better options. Pros: Affordable, good shakes/malts, location in Stillwater near other shopping/dining Cons: Stillwater gets super congested on weekends, no river view from the restaurant, average to below average food

Leo's is tiny, but charming. Located on historic Main Street in Stillwater, it's a must if you're shopping for antiques, or just down by the river for a stroll. Whether you're outdoors in the summer (they have patio seating, plus a walk up window for ice cream), enjoying fall colors or the charm of Stillwater during the holidays, Leo's is a great place to stop for a bite. Last time I went, I tried the Muchos Leo's burger--topped with jalapeno peppers, white onions, and pepperjack cheese, and served with a side of chipotle mayo. It had just enough of a kick without being overpoweringly spicy. And obviously, you can't leave without trying a malt--they have 20 flavors, as well as 8 deluxe malts (flavors like cookie dough, turtle, death by chocolate, etc). They usually give you enough to share so splitting one is definitely enough!

Asked if we could sit out back and then were asked to leave. When I complained the server said she was sorry and explained that to us when we sat down. Never happened as our server was a male. Great ice cream and malts but zero hospitality on the patio.

So glad that Stillwater is only a half hour from my house! I know I can go within the city of St Paul to get a good malt etc, but I really dig this place. I was in Stillwater to get some photography work done and wanted to review my photos somewhere other than outside in 30 degree weather. My handy dandy yelp app offered me either this or European cuisine. Leo was handing out ice cream floats today, practically. So, me, my cheese curds, and my stellar float sat around for a good half hour and checked out the picture show. The waitstaff was attentive and the cook was kind of giving me the "are you a spy with your giant DSLR" look. I'm currently planning my next trip to Stillwater in order to get my diet far off track....again.

We have been to Leo's a few times and LOVE the food. The "Leo Burger" is not to be missed. This place is great in all seasons, but especially the summer. It is nice to sit out on the patio, or grab an ice cream treat from the walk up window and walk down by the river. I love that Leo's pays particular attention to bettering the community through fundraising efforts (Food for Thought/Angel Fund) and supporting veterans.

Could it be that the end of an era is not really an end but a new beginning? For some restaurants the concept of having a Malt Shop has died long ago, and I guess I sort of understand why... Some people now-a-days really prefer to have their food prepackaged, they want to sit in front of a television, they would rather have something processed to no end and rather flavorless once it gets to their table. For those people, don't bother coming here because your tastebuds are going to be met with hands down the best burger for your money! The patty is fresh never frozen, hand pressed, and cooked to order. The buns are lightly buttered and delicious, and you can have your choice of fixings on it as well! It's great because you can get fries, tots, onion rings, or even a salad for those of you that are concious of your waste which I am not. They have actual shakes and malts and it's like taking a sip of heaven itself! They have almost any flavor you could imagine and it is just SO good! I was car shopping for my ex last summer and we made our way over here for lunch and sat out on the patio looking out over the river. It was such an enjoyable experience and I cannot wait to go back out there this summer and enjoy a fresh burger, a shake, and some antique shopping down the row of shops!

First review but long time user.... Best classic style burger I have had.... period. The kettle chips are addictive. If you like an old school diner with great food to match, this is it. The waffle fries are great also. would get my 5 stars if they had brewed iced tea to match the rest. I hate any fake fountain tea and don't drink soda. A classic grill should be making their own iced tea.
