Pretty darn good! Cool, laid back kind of place. Sports on tv. They serve freshly popped popcorn to snack on when you are seated. I Thad the bacon cheeseburger and could only finish half. It was really good, just too much for me =) My husband had their works burger and he really liked it. He was overstuffed when we walked out the door and joked that he needed to take a little nap before we got on the road, lol. Everyone we encountered was super friendly. Helpful and accommodating. Definitely a place we would go back to for a good burger.

If I could give a negative rating I would. Loud, too busy, and horrible service. Now the food! I got a regular hamburger... Because I was new to town and I thought well, if a burger is good then the others with additional toppings will be great. Worst, overcooked, dry burger ever, with no flavor. If the regular is that bad....it must be why they want you too pay way more for toppings. Hard to believe best burgers in Rochester.... McDonald's has them beat!

I had the Marvin Burger, which was good. This is a solid place. I have only been to three places to eat in Rochester; Newt's, John Hardy's, and Famous Dave's. I think I like John Hardy's the best but all three are good.

I enjoy the music here most of all - really markets to my generation. I wanted to speak out and talk about their breakfast! I drove by and saw the parking lot full on a Saturday morning, used yelp.com to look them up and call to ask if they were truly open, and learned about the breakfast! The Newt's pancakes are always filling. Also, on one Sunday, I came in and sat at the bar because it was so packed - and I had fresh squeezed orange juice by the bartender who put it in a chilled beer glass and it was heaven. (Not even a mimosa!) My friend likes their bloody marys too. I'd actually give it 4.5 stars if I could - because it's really quite good, but when they're busy, the service slows down and the parking lot fills up. Also, they need a better waiting area. That time I ate breakfast at the bar, I swear people were hovering so close behind me, I thought I was going to have to protect my bacon as they seemed to be drooling and staring at my food. So, a little uncomfortable when they're busy, but the food is worth the wait.

I've enjoyed Newt's on multiple occasions and have always been more than happy with the food. The burgers really are great, and I've had a different one on each of my five visits - one downtown and four at the Frontage Rd location. The fries are very good as well and an appetizer order of onion rings is a meal all by itself. It's doubtful you'll ever leave hungry. The service can be hit or miss, which is the only reason I only gave four stars, but if you're out for a good burger this is the place to go in Rochester.

Customer service is excellent!! The burgers are always done perfectly. The environment is lovely as well. Ive had the Dave's and Marvin's burgers. Both are awesome. Price ain't bad either. I had the beef steak this time, was awesome.

O M G! This place was fabulous! They have some of the best burgers you will ever have, and there is a large menu of burgers to pick from. They are so yummy and I guarantee that you will love it. The Northern location is a bit small so I would recommend a reservation if you can, otherwise there may be a long wait. The Downtown location is also very busy and they are opening another location soon, which I am sure will be just as good. Because of the large crowd this restaurant attracts, the service is a little slow, but it is definitely worth every minute of your time.

I ordered the hickory bacon burger and was very pleased and impressed. Very good burger and a decent selection of beer. The atmosphere is very chill and relaxed, I will definitely be coming here more often and I am looking forward to trying their other burgers! This place is now one of my favorite burger joints in Southern Minnesota!

Eh... Ordered bacon cheeseburger, fries, glass of water and a milkshake. Drank the water before food arrived and was not offered a refill until after food was consumed. Chocolate shake arrived 20 minutes after food did. Bad service and mediocre food (cold fries) will guide us to Culver's or Applebee's instead next time. Manager never showed up when requested.

My wife's entire family is from the Rochester area so we make the trip once or twice a year. During our last trip, we couldn't make a decision and her grandpa was craving onion rings and beer so off to Newt's we went. We started with, what else? Onion rings and beer. The onion rings, despite their size, are a little on the pricey size, but didn't disappoint. Rarely able to get delicious Midwest beer, I opted for a Surly Furious. They have a pretty solid craft beer offering with Surly, Summit, Odell, Lagunitas, Oskar Blues and a few other standouts. First, let me preface that I had *just* had a burger the day before *and* I have the fortunate pleasure of living in a massive city that features some of the best burgers around. Period. For whatever reason, despite being known for their burgers, one didn't sound good to me. So I ordered the Reuben, even though my waitress kindly pointed me elsewhere (chicken strips or fish tacos she said) since I wasn't feeling like a burger. The Reuben was okay, but nothing to write home about. Meanwhile, I watched my wife dominate Dave's burger much to my taste bud's regret. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to coming back when I'm craving a burger and taking the Juicy Lucy, Marvin's Burger or Dave's Burger out for a spin. [OVERALL]: Good service (despite the fact that she had a lot of spread out tables), delicious onion rings and burgers, and reasonably priced craft beer. Pass on Reuben despite it being "Newt's Favorite." Oh, and last of all, we went early (4:45pm-ish) and it was crowded and parking wasn't (yet) a mess, but I could see how that lot could be tricky to navigate during peak times.

Seriously the best burger place in Rochester, MN. Marvin's burger is one to try if you are new to this establishment. Parking is a hot mess so arrive early or plan a late dinner. There is parking on the North side of the building and stairs to get to the front entrance.

We don't find ourselves here nearly as much as we used to, and I don't find myself liking it as much as I used to either.. Overall its a decent place to grab a burger and a beer, and if you're up early enough the breakfast is a MUST TRY! The good: 1. The burgers are some of the best in town, but don't compare them to the amazing burger joints in the big cities 2. Their breakfast is awesome! I wish i was more of a morning person so I could make it in time more often. 3. The ultimate bloody mary is a meal in itself (both in food quantity and price) The bad: 1. The parking lot SUCKS!! its seriously a nightmare... 2. The service can also suck - depending on who you get 3. They got rid of their AMAZING mozzarella sticks - our waiter last time said tons of people have been complaining so hopefully they'll bring them back?? PLEASE!!! 4. The tartar sauce for the fish is so bland, it almost tastes like straight Mayo...

Anytime we are craving a burger, the first place we think of is Newt's. We aren't from the Rochester area and were given recommendations to try Newt's. Now we give those recommendations to out of town visitors. My wife's mom always asks if we can send her a burger from Newt's. The staff has always been friendly, and even on the most busy night we visited, our wait was very reasonable. We love this place!

Someone at baseball game said Newts was good. Stopped here with à friend after baseball and shopping. A 4/5 star as it took 10 minutes for server to take our order. Burgers are their specialty and are 1/2 # burgers. I ordered à Juicy Lucy with Fries Abd a beer. The burger was huge and server stated to stab it with à knife. I ate Fries first so I didnt burn my mouth with melted cheese. I ate half of it and brought back to hotel. This is whats weird, the juicy Lucy tasted better microwaved the next morning. Is it the spaghetti or lasagne phenomenon? Maybe the flavor of the cheese and beef sealed better or I was hung over but it was better the 2nd day. The lucy was $9.99 but huge. The Decor was dated beer bottle wall paper borders and weird lamps make up their logo. Will return if in area again.

Always great food, I have had many things on their menu and never have been disappointed. They also have an awesome breakfast!

Yelps directions are wrong. Had us down a dark road at the end of nowhere. Food is good though once you find it!

Great burgers spectacular nachos (share with a friend). Plenty of beers on tap. The service is the best in town.

Each summer I visit the Rochester area, and I make sure to stop at Newt's - they have excellent burgers and beers. Also a 'famous' Bloody Mary that has pickles, hard boiled egg, and a cheeseburger slider as part of the presentation. Prices are very reasonable, decor is fun, lots of TVs, great atmosphere. Happy hour from 3-6 AND 9-close with drink specials. The Marvin Burger is my personal favorite menu item. Fries are pretty good too.

This was the first place my boyfriend & I stopped at after getting off the plane for his cousin's wedding. She had recommended it for all the traveling guests & we were pleased! Our server was super friendly & brought us a bowl of popcorn while we looked over the menu. They have awesome daily drink specials & that day happened to be $2 miller lites. The burger list is unique & super hard to choose from. My boyfriend went with the Marvin Burger & loved it. I went with the Smoky Ranch Burger & we both opted for the side salad with their "famous" blue cheese dressing. Everything was just fantastic. The buns, meat, & toppings were fresh & plentiful. We brought his brother & his girlfriend to the one downtown the next night, but this one was the better location/food (even though it's the same menu) than the downtown location.

I've been to Newt 's a few times and each time I leave feeling like "why did I go here again?". The chicken strips are good, the fish sandwich is blah, I've heard the burgers are good, the fries are decent, and the bloody mary's are really good...if I go again I'm going to drink my dinner.

  • Trevor M.

The food is great, the service is too, and they have a great beer selection. However, if you want to be able to hear what your date is saying well sit next to them because it's sort of loud. That's most of the restaurants in Rochester, mn though.

The Ink Linguistics team just enjoyed an early dinner at North Newt's and it was delectable, scrumptious and down right tasty. The classic rock was blaring and the staff was singing along all while serving up juicy burgers and crispy fries. Our favorite burger is the Gustavo burger sans French fries. Instead get some of the crazy potato ball things filled with cheese and bacon.

Went to this location for breakfast on a Saturday Morning. The pancakes were good and I asked for bacon crispy which came out good. Got a sandwich with grilled cheese sausage, egg, and bacon it was good but I took the bacon off because it was not cooked to a crisp and I removed the sausage and ate it separately because it took over the flavor of the egg and cheese....The tator tots that came with this sandwich were phenomenal and they were served alongside a little dish of melted cheese sauce....I scarfed that right up...yummmm They did not offer any hot tea and i'm sorry if you going to do breakfast you need tea and not just coffee.... The prices are a little on the higher side for breakfast and they didn't appear to offer any basic less expensive specials.... Our server was nice and young and would have made a bigger impression on us if he had the confidence to just strike up a little more banter and conversation.

Grabbed some burgers from here on our way out of town and they were phenomenal. Gave us an extra order of fries for our kids and some popcorn. Great service, loud and casual ambience.

Good bar food. The burgers looked awesome and my wrap was great for your typical greasy, cheesy, meal. It is pretty messy with popcorn on the floor everywhere and loud with all the locals. Fun and easy place to go for a meal.

Great burgers, best in town. The service is just ok, but difference from giving 4-5 stars is the attitude iS some of the staffs attitude

Newt's is not apologetic about their fat burgers. You name the topping and it is available here. Comfortable beer and burger dive.

I grew up in Roch, but haven't been to Newts in around a decade. Happened to be in town last week and noticed the new one, well outside the grasp of the clinic and downtown parking debacles. Seems like a win! Didn't have a burger, just drinks and appetizers. Service was prompt and we managed to hit happy hour, so my excellent pint of Deschutes Porter was only 3.50. I celebrated that by having another. :) Our chicken quesadillas were large and accompanied by guac, salsa and sour cream. More importantly, they were cheesy and smoky, really quite tasty. I need to get back there for a burger. Just don't tell my mom, she thinks I go to Roch to see her.

Not a burger person, but this place converted me. A burger is usually the last thing I would consider ordering when I go out to eat, but this place changed my opinion. The north location is better than the downtown one. I have tried almost every burger on the menu now and I can't pick a favorite, although I think I have ordered the fatty melt the most (1/2 pound burger patty between two grilled cheese sandwiches topped with Dijon mustard and onion rings). Gustavo burger looks strange, but well worth a try! Heck they're all great! The fries are good and the beer is cheap, 13 bucks for a pitcher. I have taken to coming here about once per week. The don't take reservations though and it's always busy so you might have to wait a bit. The bloody Mary's are insane and come with a slider, celery stick, beef stick, cheese, boiled egg, and I can't even remember what else. The waitstaff are super friendly and fun. It's not uncommon for them to all burst into song when particular classic rock jams come on.

Food was great, which is why this review was able to muster 1 star. The service was HORRIBLE! This was our first and LAST visit! It took forever to get our order. When it did arrive, our daughters food did not. OFCOURSE, after dropping off the food, our server was no where to be seen. After sending out a search party, we FINALLY located her. Explained that we didn't get our daughters food. She "claimed" the cook forgot to make it. Normally sounds believable, but with the apparent lack of intelligence, we were dealing with, I didn't buy it. By the time our daughters food came, we were done eating. Also, no refills, because of the lack of presence if iur server!

My second visit the first was breakfast. 3 pancakes, 2 eggs, some bacon and hash browns. It was a tasty breakfast and a filling breakfast. But Newt's is known for burgers so a return visit was a must and when i did return for a Newt I was tempted to go with the Fatty Melt but with all the medical stuff going on with my lovely bride and having had a trip to ER (praise God false alarm) I being cautious so went with the Marvin, basically a bacon/cheese. Though it wasn't the temptation burger it was satisfying. Juicy on a fresh roll. Could have been a tad thicker but my blood pump repair man was tense enough and why ruin his Sunday with a page. The service was good. The ambiance was nice. It was more modern for my preferred dark and old rugged wood bar but those bar burger joints have pretty much faded from the landscape with the TV very 5' and bright blonde wood stuff, but Newt's did it well and comfortable. There are no Newt's in my home stomping ground but if it were I'd be a big fan.

We had a good experience. The place was very busy and a mess when we arrived. I was skeptical that we would have a good meal. But the burgers were good, good servers, and free popcorn.

Still love this place! Just a few disappointments. The breakfast. Pancakes are awesome, but I Hate their eggs- always cooked wrong. And a few times they didn't have some of the tap beers available that were listed on the menu. And their tap beer selection is very limited. But I love the burgers and the potato poppers! So I will persevere!

I am a huge fan of Newts burgers! Always a favorite stop during Thursdays on First in downtown Rochester. On a quick bite to eat before heading out of town my mom, sister, and myself stopped for a burger. I ordered the Jucy Lucy (cheese stuffed burger, okay fine) and thought it was quite good, but not as good as previous visits. My sister also ordered one and being a first timer at both Newts and Jucy Lucy burgers thought it was great. My mom went with a classic cheeseburger and was pretty disappointed. Also being a huge Newts fan, she thought the burger was dry and not nearly as lip smacking as the burgers from the downtown location. The vibe of the location was nice- they play great music and the staff is very friendly and outgoing! The booths could maybe be replaced (maybe just my particular booth) but overall it's a very fun, laid back joint and very worth the trip!

Well. I'm from Chicago. This place being touted as one of the best burgers in Minnesota? Ok, I guess I get that. But it's not the best I've had. A little too much bread and the meat needs some salt and pepper. It just does. Nice wait staff. Kind of a scummy place. Sorry, but when you need to wash your hands after handling the menu, you know it's kind of scummy.

  • Aaron G.

The food was good but the service made the experience terrible. First of all the waiter dropped my burger on the way to my table, which I can forgive, accidents happen. But when we finally got our burgers two had no sauce at all, and the other was cold. We waited for our waitress to come by but she never did, and we had to flag her down. In a burger place there should always be sauce on the burgers and the customer should not have to put the sauce on themselves.

  • Stefan W.

This new location feels overcrowded, and lacks the cozy, personalized feel of the original downtown. That said, the burgers are just as good. My medium rare order came perfectly pink and juicy. I opted to try the "Peanut butter, cheese & bacon" - not something I'd do again, but for some reason, it does work. Mashed potato "poppers' were surprisingly good, and the portion size was massive. I think though, I'll go back downtown when I return to Rochester again - It's just not the same experience here.

Eh, food is just average. We have eaten there twice, and won't go out of our way to go again. I even found 2 pieces of chicken on my chicken nachos.

Very good burgers and fries. A fun place with good service. Not our first time and not our last.

Just visited this new location 1/28/14 at about 2pm. The service was very poor, not very welcoming at all. Saw the waitress numerous times run her hands thru her long ponytail or pull her ponytail holder too often and then not wash her hands!!! The burgers were all bun and sauce! VERY MEDIOCOR food in taste and value. Tasted many other burgers that I would go back for but not yours!!!

This is my third or fourth review of Newt's. I keep giving this place a try because of the reputation it has, but I have to take my rating all the way down to 1 star after lunch today. My wife had the day off so we decided to give the place one last try. She had the fish and chips, I had the California burger. The fish was so greasy my wife had to blot it with a napkin, and the batter was bland. My burger was so tasteless I had to salt it down three times to be able to taste anything at all. The mayonnaise comes in squeeze packets, which I thought was more suitable for a fast food restaurant than one in which we paid $30 for two meals. Both meals came with fries, which were probably the least mucked up part of the meal. I won't be going back, and I am still amazed anyone believes this is a good, let alone great, place to eat.

Great burgers, huge piles of fries. Order beer, iced is awful. Not crazy about the mashed potato poppers. But smoked Gouda patty melt was fantastic and they are not afraid of medium rare, perfect. Service was great as well!

Love Newt's! Best burgers in town and the newer location is so much more convenient for us and less congested than the downtown location. The burgers have always been done to my liking and are flavorful and juicy, I always have to bring half home!

I found rave reviews for all of the restaurants owned by the same company, so we tried Newt's when we started craving burgers. Service was not that great; I get that we were there in the afternoon when it wasn't very busy, but that's no excuse to have empty glasses for the majority of the meal. The burgers were pretty good, multiple variations of the greasy favorite. We will probably go back one more time while we're up here to give it another shot, hopefully, it will be a better review after that!

Easily the best burger in Rochester. The Fatty Melt, the Marvin Burger, and the Peanut Butter Burger are all personal favorites of mine. Good beer selection too, with Surly and New Belgium on tap. Can't wait to try the fish tacos next time I'm in!

Visiting the area while kid was attending hockey camp. Okay 3.5 rounded up to a 4. Ordered the "works" burger for takeout. 3/4 beef patty with ample fixings. Surprised to see that they'll cook it medium rare since most places only go as far as medium on the scale. Echoing some of the comments of previous reviewers.....YES the burger is juicy and the accompanying fixings with each signature burger are fresh and plentiful. YES the fries are good and crispy with skins. I didn't eat in, but the frontage location is spacious with a bar in the middle of the restaurant. The staff was welcoming with a smile on their face and ensured my takeout order was good to go. They also didn't skimp on the packets of ketchup and mustard. The only one small drawback was that the burger was a bit bland and wasn't seasoned. Now I'm used to having my patties slightly seasoned, but also understand there are burger joints that don't taint the "essence" of the beef and leave it up to the eater to dress the burger to individual taste. I'm going with the assumption that this is one of those purist burger joints. Not a bad burger, but also didn't crack my top 10. Still, a welcoming restaurant that serves fresh to order food. I can see why Newt's is a local favorite.
