There's a reason many people prefer to stick with predictable corporate restaurant chains rather than take a chance on the unknown. And places like the Speak Easy are the reason. I was passing through Moorehead and asked someone where to eat. She enthusiastically recommended the Speak Easy. So there I went. I should have driven back to Fargo and looked for an Olive Garden if I wanted moderately good Italian food. I ordered some sort of pasta. What arrived was about three or four pounds of what I can only call glop, not food. It was inedible, figuratively and almost literally too. The tomato-based sauce seemed like something that had been found on the clearance shelf of a dollar store. There were these odd fried mushrooms on top that were also unpalatable, although I'm less able to put my finger on exactly why. Anyway, I could eat only a few bites--two or three of the mushrooms and scarcely a mouthful of the pasta. Still hungry, I paid the bill, got a to-go box (so as not to offend the waitress by leaving 95% of the meal on its plate) and fled. I discarded the box in a gas station garbage can, where it landed with a thud.

We were seated right away, about 630pm tonight. Being a Friday night the place was pretty busy. Our waitress was did a good job checking on us throughout the evening. However we won't go back. White bread & iceberg lettuce. The food was something I'd expect at a truck stop. I should have sent my entree back right away. The white sauce on my pasta reminded me of Velveta quality. The ice cream turtle dessert was pretty good. But considering the cost of my entree was close to $16 & tasted like it should have costed $5 or $6, we won't go back.

This is where the Spaghetti and Meatball is the best around. The service will make you feel like your back in that era. I recommend when taking someone out for the night you do it here, you will be very happy that you did. It's not fast food you will be waiting awhile for food but it's worth every minute when your order is brought to you.

Love the atmosphere. Been here before & it's always a good getaway. Not a big fan of their spaghetti but recently had a simple chicken strip basket & the honey mustard is amazing! I live to far to go much but I'll be back again.

Worst spaghetti I have ever had and it took and hour to get to our table even though it was the special the night we were there. Yuck!!!!!!!! And the service was almost as bad.

It's an independently owned restaurant in an increasingly franchise driven community. It's an honest place. A place you're welcome to bring your family or whole office party with no fuss -- but somehow it's intimate enough for a quiet night with your SO. You can sit quietly or make quick conversation with anyone at the bar. It's quiet but always busy. A place you're likely to have a server or host(ess) that has ties that run deep in the community. The food is better than any franchise/chain in town, the prices are fair and service is good. I always go for the prime rib. If you're a local you come to get away. If you're from out if town you'd be welcome as a local.

I'm sorry to say this, but I recently ate dinner at this restaurant and it was absolutely terrible. Easily the worst place I've eaten so far in the FM area. We came here with a group of 10 and I tried to have a neutral perspective because some of my friends said it was really good Italian, whereas others (mostly on Yelp/online reviews) indicated to stay away and to heed the health cold violation warnings. The best part about the meal was the butter that came with the free bread, because it was garlicky and easy to spread. Our waitress was also friendly. However, the side salad that came before our food had a really unappealing Italian dressing. I'm not sure what it was exactly, but it tasted like it might have gone bad somehow so I ended up not eating it. I ordered the cannelloni for my entrée and this was easily the worst Italian food I've had in my life. The marinara sauce was extremely salty and thick, the cannelloni noodles were hard, small, and rubbery like they had been sitting out for hours, and then the meat filling inside was gray, had a strange stomach-churning flavor, and also just really oddly hard in texture. There was no amount of parmesan cheese that could make up for this, and any attempt to enjoy the food was hopeless. This was the first time ever in my life where I've had a meal at a restaurant that was so terrible that I force-fed myself a few bites to be polite/not obvious and then quickly threw away the leftovers in the garbage when I got home. P.S. I am not a picky eater whatsoever, and truly believe that adding extra cheese, seasonings, or siracha can help improve any food. I was also raised to not waste food and to eat my meal when it's placed in front of me. However, this was the one exception where my taste buds (and stomach) were screaming "AW HECK NO" and so I quickly obliged.

Love it or hate it the one thing that cant be denied is the shocking number of health code violations that the Speak Easy incurs year after year. It's public record, Google it if you don't believe me. The building is great and the decor is comfortable and welcoming with a romantic feel due to the low lighting levels and Frank Sinatra style of music. I have lived in Moorhead my entire life and have eaten here probably 20-30 times over the past 15 years. In the past 5 years the food has gotten so bad that the Speak Easy is no longer a consideration for dining. Bottom line: the food is horrid and you may get sick. That's a reality.

I love coming to Speakeasy for the unlimited bread and garlic butter. Trust me--you won't be able to stop. The ambiance is adorable and they have the basic Italian dishes, (eggplant/chicken parm, fettuccine Alfredo,) down to a science. If you come to any Italian restaurant hoping to get a "good steak," then you are going to be disappointed, and then I'm going to question why you didn't go to a steak house. Basic rule of thumb: stick to the Italian at an Italian restaurant, and you will be satisfied.

I really don't know how this place is still going. It has some of the WORST tasting Italian food I've ever had. All I can say is don't waste your time.

I wanted to like this place. I really did. The decor is awesome and inviting and I was really excited. It's gorgeous. Unfortunately, you go to restaurant to eat, not just hang out in a beautiful living or dining room. Long wait times despite the place being nearly empty, and the food was bland and tasteless. Neither my wife nor I really enjoyed our meals. When I reheated my leftovers (some kind of spaghetti) at home, I had to add some pesto sauce we had laying around just to make it palatable. If I had to guess, this is one of those places that Gordon Ramsay would visit on Kitchen Nightmares. And I'd guess he'd tell them to pare their menu offerings down to about 10-25% of what's currently on there. It's just too varied, with what seems like a really deep selection of Italian cuisine, but ranging all the way to "American" dishes, like burgers, steaks, and pork chops. It seems like a schizophrenic offering, and all of them bland. You're not a Cheesecake Factory. The crazy menu selection isn't working for you. If I were to advise this place, I'd tell them to focus on the Italian food (rather than boring midwestern white people stuff like pot roast) and pare the menu down to make fewer items but make them really well. Keep a few, but very few, choices of steak for dishes like gorgonzola crusted. I really do hope they re-vamp their menu, because I'd love to give this place a second chance. But not until I hear the food has been completely changed.

Our favorite destination in town! We enjoy the atmosphere, delicious food and attentive service. It's always a wonderful time when we visit The Speak Easy!

I've been coming here since I was a kid. It seems to deteriorate every year. I have to give one star tonight for a few reasons. 1. We ordered the "small bites"-drummers, cheese balls, and Jamaican wings. They were semi-edible. They sat for five minutes minimum as we had no silverware, no napkins. The waitress comes by and we ask for ketchup and ranch. Another five minutes go by. She brings silverware but no ketchup. So we ask again. We finally get it. Then the minestrone soup arrives. It was semi-warm. Whatever to all this. The real kicker here was the meal. I ordered the bbq ribs with au gratin potatoes. The ribs were BAD, actually they were horrifying. My girlfriend even took pictures of the them while I tried to keep my appetizer in. They were ice cold and white fatty substance. Almost similar to when you bite into fatty lard in a chicken drummy. I cut the ribs in a few spots hoping maybe they just forgot to hear up both sides as they tasted like bubble gym mixed with pig fat. I cant even describe how bad it was. I hate complaining but it was so appalling that I had to. She took them off the bill which was nice but the experience overall was terrible. It will be quite se time before I go back...which is unfortunate as its out neighborhood place that I've dined at for decades.

We had a coupon for one free entree with purchase of one entree and two beverages. We chose two entrees of the same price, $13.95. The pasta dish I had was absolutely horrid and came with a huge pile of fried mushrooms on the top. I should have read the earlier review. When the check came, only $9 was subtracted from the bill. I was told the fine print on the coupon said ,"up to $9" when I asked. I left not only hungry, but with a bad taste in my mouth for having to pay for part of a "free" entree. By the way, there is little, if anything on the menu that one could buy for $9. We won't be going back.

Frankly, I would go with negative stars for this place, if I could. One of the worst dining experiences overall within recent memory. So little was actually done right that I almost don't know where to start. Their seafood "calzone" utilizes a glob of some sort of odious cream concoction dolloped in the middle of puff pastry. Yes, you read that right, puff pastry. Now, a calzone is supposed to be an outside-in folded pizza pouch, basically and I don't know if I've ever heard of puff pastry being used, let alone seen it before. It frankly looked like the worst sort of tart anyone could dream up and didn't even remotely resemble an actual calzone. This was a square of puff pastry with a spoonful of white crap in the center. The inside was terrible and despite the menu listing chunks of crab and shrimp, I found exactly 2 tiny shrimp and a couple globs that I'm taking to be their krab substitute. The filling was borderline stomach-turning and I discarded it. The puff pastry itself was overcooked and dry. I also had a bowl of linguine with another awful sauce. Only the chicken topping was edible, though not particularly done well, either. The side salad for the entree featured a truly dreadful ranch dressing. My wife had another noodle dish and her penne pasta, though nice and large, was also rubbery. We got our food fairly fast, which usually means saved from earlier (in her case, possibly the night before) and slugged into a microwave. My son had his usual chicken strips and fries. The fries were decent and the chicken, even for a kids meal, rather cheap and nasty-tasting. My father and mother's entree's were slightly more to their liking, but to be fair, my mother's was a salad and she is not the highest food discriminator. My father liked the taste but wanted a chainsaw to cut his sausage meatballs. What I wanted was a beer to try to get the lingering taste of the "calzone" out of my mouth. Given that I had asked the waitress for something without onions, due to a food intolerance, seeing that slop in the "calzone" packed full of green onions, was a disappointment, even moreso than the poor use of puff pastry. The iced tea I had wasn't cutting it, being closer to dishwater than actual iced tea, but our waitress did a bombing run of dropping the plates on our table and fled, presumably into the night or a comfortable lounge in the back somewhere, arriving only in the nick of time to deliver the check for this overpriced nonsense. Despite their excellent advertising and theme (now going unchanged for over 20 years strong) and a cool sort of dark gangster-ish (Capone-style) feel and the neat old car in the actual restaurant itself, decor aside, this is not a place I would intentionally ever set foot in or even near again.

I like to go here every time I visit home - best hands down Minestrone soup ever. Goes great with their bread. The pasta's are ok - go with something "baked". Comfy setting (with true "speak easy" theme) and solid comfort food.

Yeah, Not so much. I was in town for my boyfriends college homecoming. We ate here twice in one weekend, not by my choice. The establishment is cute but also resembles an old supper club. They serve mostly Italian inspired foods and fried items. Lunch: We got some cheese balls, which were basically cheese curds, and they were just ok. The guy ordered chicken wings which he didn't like but i thought were ok. The buffalo sauce wasn't too spicy. I ordered a grilled chicken salad, which had a weird combination of items on it (mandarin oranges, hard boiled eggs, and black olives). It was a average to poor salad and it cost more than most items on the menu $9. Bloody mary's are not worth your $, very little flavor, and very little portion. Brunch: We came back the next day at the request of Grandparents, and who can say no to the grandparents? I had some french toast which was soggy, cold hard bacon, and a few chunks of fruit. But brunch was crazy cheap $5. The boy had the eggs benedict which seemed edible. You cant really screw up brunch, and the prices were ok. though as soon as we got our food our waitress never came back with more coffee. She filled my cup 3 times before we got food, and not once after? Cant say I didnt give'em a chance.

Since I am originally from Fargo-Moorhead, I really want to like this place better. I have such great memories of it. Sadly though, it hasn't changed one bit since I was in high school over 20 years ago. The decor is unchanged, the menu is COMPLETELY unchanged, the server outfits are unchanged, etc. I guess they did do an addition to the back. Now that I have left the area and experienced some GREAT Italian food, I don't think I can go back. We tried once and my husband couldn't get past the fact that Alfredo and Marinara sauces were served on the same dish. It isn't horrible food, just not real Italian, not too creative, and just very blah. The decor is still pretty cool for being so old. I can also say that the drinks were good. I had a martini and my husband had a margarita.

We visited on Friday night around 6:30pm & it wasn't busy, which is great for a Friday. The atmosphere was wonderful w/ an old fancy supper club vibe. The artichoke dip was great. I had the Flapper & it was good as well: two manicotti served over spinach noodles & a side of rigatoni. My made to order sangria was fresh, yummy, & served in a big glass - can't complain! & the salad was super fresh. The bf had a chicken, sundried tomato, red pepper pasta which was, as he stated "meh" , but he did have the minestrone which was amazing :) The sourdough bread was great & went well w/ the garlic butter. The service was good as well, although, the servers really could do w/ out the hats & I am sure they would agree :) It was a good experience & we will be back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
