I had the Crab Cake Sandwich today, and the crab flavor was robust and crabby, not unlike my 4 year old. The soup special of the day was cold Melon Mint, not a great rainy day soup, but still refreshing. And then the chocolate cake was quite good, but I can get a bigger piece just as good for less than $6 at a bakery. Not many restaurants are in a totally residential neighborhood with no other businesses nearby, and I have to wonder what the neighbors think of the extra traffic they receive. Hopefully it more than makes up for it that they have such a cool little place nearby. Service was great.

Went for Valentine's Day Brunch and utilized a Groupon. Our server was great. He was friendly and had personality. You do need a reservation typically to make sure you get a table. Seating is limited, quaint, and intimate. I love that they serve family style and in courses. You can take your time talking to your dining companion and just enjoy each and every item leisurely. We had fruit and yogurt for the first course which was vanilla yogurt in a cereal bowl and some chunks of melon and pineapple. Second course was baked french toast which was like a bread pudding french toast. Third some bacon and scrambled eggs with zucchini and onions and some rosemary potatoes. The last course was odd---it was a big piece of a chocolate chip bar cookie. We packaged it up and took it home. We ordered coffee and I think my Groupon was for 20.00....I ended up paying an additional 10 towards the meal and tip of course. We had a nice enough experience for the money.

It's a really small place in a residential area. Don't come here if you're looking for some private, quality time with anyone! You're practically sharing a table with the people next to you since the tables are so close together! I have been here for breakfast and dinner and both times left me feeling unfulfilled. The food is just mediocre and service was really mediocre as well. Did not get any water refills until asked! Just left feeling unsatisfied. Don't think i'll be coming back here again!

After my first visit, I'm definitely interested in going back for more. This is a different dining experience - I would call it quirky and quaint. Somewhat oddly located in a residential area, this restaurant is more than just small. It is, at times, awkwardly intimate. Don't go here if you're in a big hurry, or without a reservation. There was only one server, so it moved somewhat slowly, from start to finish. Other negatives: the unisex restroom and lukewarm coffee. So why would I go back? The menu is interesting and the food was good. Everyone was pleasant, and as I said if you're ready for a different experience, this is a good choice. I suggest giving it a try. Good wine list. Excellent dessert. Daily chef specials are worth a try, but the regular menu items were good too.

Weekend brunch - fixed menu, served family style. The 4 courses were well rounded, started with yogurt and fruit, then French toast bake; eggs, duck bacon and potatoes, banana bread/cake for dessert. I am gluten free and they were able to accommodate with a couple of delicious truffles for dessert. All the food and the coffee was delicious, simple recipes done very well. I will come back for dinner one night to check or what else they can do. I love this neighborhood, very artsy and out of the way, will be a great biking destination this summer. This restaurant matched, local-feeling and right in the middle of a residential block.

I want to love this restaurant ! But tonight was beyond bad. Risotto was cold, my waiter didn't care. The roasted vegetables were left over from yesterday. Only one other table in the "main" dining room, but we were seated in the back. Will not be goin back.

I had never heard of Signature Cafe prior to my visit there. I saw that it had some pretty solid stars so was excited to try it out. We had a Groupon to use for brunch so we went on a Sunday morning at 11:30. Bad sign number one: I thought the place was closed. There was no one there when I walked in the door, after stepping inside I saw four people way back in a corner that were sitting down for brunch. There is no music playing so it is eerily quiet in the restaurant. Our server was very nice and attentive, but the brunch was really poorly done. The fruit cup and yogurt were sad, and not much for two people. The french toast was good but nothing worth noting. The egg bake.... oh the egg bake. I should have read through the Yelp reviews for brunch. The egg bake was bland and dense and had some sort of unidentifiable greenery in it (was it broccoli? spinach? green eggs?) The potatoes were tough and dry, like they had been precooked and then warmed up. I think that they are failing on the brunch aspect of their dining experience, since everyone seems to be impressed by their dinners. Maybe Signature should stop serving brunch-after seeing only 8 people including us in there on a Sunday morning-I don't think it would be all that detrimental to their business. I've seen good reviews for dinner, but I'm not sure I'd make the trip out again to give them another shot.

Tried it for the first time with a Groupon on a date with my wife not too long ago. Had a great dinner experience and will probably come back for weekend brunch. The service was right-on and the food was was delicious. I was surprised that there were recent bad reviews for this place. It was a relaxing dinner and we'll probably bring my in-laws for brunch next time they're in town. I'd have no hesitation recommending it to another couple.. specifically for a date-night type meal. Don't think it'd be good with kids. It is a unique experience. Feels like you're having dinner at a friend's house.

Yes, maybe food is affordable there specially with groupon deal or dinner for $35 but the food is not that tasty there. Salmon with risotto and potato cakes were ordered and they were really really oily. I was having a lot of water to kill the taste of oil. Also they add sauces to everything so you won't experience real taste of risotto. For dessert we have asked for espresso but the machine was broken so no luck even there.

Went for brunch. Their unique french toasts and duck bacons were both exceptional, but I will probably never go to this place again. Why? Despite their great food and service, the restaurant wasn't a pleasant place to stay at all, as it was very cold and had no background music: meaning.. super awkward. Many people don't notice that 99.999% of restaurants (quiet or loud) have background music playing. Everyone is so used to it, you just don't recognize/appreciate it until you go to a place where there's no music. So if you don't mind wearing a thick jacket in a awkwardly quiet place, this cafe is honestly a great place for you to have yummy brunch.

I will never trust yelp again. Or Groupon. I got a Groupon for Signature Cafe, under the impression that it is farm to table. The pictures on Groupon were GREAT and gave me the impression that the food would be fresh and inventive and delicious. We actually had to contain our laughter when we were there because the food was so bad. I honestly think that they pre-made everything in the back and just kept the food in those metal serving trays with the little candle underneath to keep it warm. The first course was a little dish of obviously Yoplait yogurt with strawberry syrup on top (like, Nestle strawberry syrup), with another small cup of fucking cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and two small slices of slimy pineapple. Those fruits are not farm to table. That yogurt is not farm to table. All that probably cost around $1. Second course was okay. Three small triangular pieces of french toast and way too much slightly warm maple syrup. Wasn't awesome, still not convinced it was farm to table, but at least I was able to eat it. Third course was egg CUBES. Yes CUBES. With so much milk mixed in and I think they might have also mixed in some sort of congealing agent that made it keep that shape. I wish I had taken a picture. I've never gotten egg cubes. The waiter described it as being an egg scramble. But I swear they were cubes. There was some obviously previously frozen broccoli mixed in. I love broccoli but man, that was bad. Then there was some duck bacon which I asked to not have and got it anyway. Not a big deal but that also looked gross and was flaccid. I'm not a bacon person but I assume that most people like crispy bacon, not flaccid, thick, muscley looking bacon. It was weird. And the potatoes were acceptable in a cafeteria setting. Fourth course was what really made it obvious that this place is being run by an old man who has only heard of brunch but has never actually been to brunch. It was described to us as "cake." It was dry yellow "cake" with no flavor and I swear to god, they realized how fucking bland this cake was, so they just threw chocolate chips on top after letting the cake bake for probably 20 minutes. They weren't mixed in. Just thrown on top - not evenly, mind you. Just literally thrown. Something a moronic 13 year old boy might make in home ec class in middle school. We were 2 of 6 in the restaurant, separated by at least 40 years, and yet they expect everyone to have reservations? The mimosa was $8 and was Minute Maid orange juice and a $3 bottle of champagne (I know it's $3 because the restaurant I used to work at also used that champagne and it costs them $3 a bottle. Or maybe less, I don't remember). I have to say that the server was wonderful. He's trying his hardest. He deserves to work in a better restaurant. If you're reading this, please seek work elsewhere. You can do better. Let that place fail, obviously the owner or "chef" doesn't give a shit anymore. I assume you're serving mostly old people and I'll bet you're not making as much as you deserve. Also, it was very expensive. Do not go here. I hate to give bad reviews after such great service, but I want the owner or chef, if there is one, to know that this place is a joke. It should not have been empty on Saturday during brunch. Maybe there's a dinner crowd, I don't know, but I can't imagine the food would be much better.

I originally found this place through Groupon; which is a great resource for me to discover places that I would not have known about otherwise! The menu looked great, and the location was very intriguing! We drove half an hour after my son's baseball practice to have dinner there, and was really looking forward to the pan seared scallops! As I was approached by the host/waiter I told him we had a reservation for 4 at 7:30; he said there was no reservation; I then told him I did it through Groupon and was pretty sure I had an email confirmation! He said it was for the next day (apparently I made it for the wrong day)! My wife asked if we could switch the reservation to today instead and he said no, and was very stern and quite pompous about it! I can understand though because they were very slammed, they have about 10 tables inside and maybe 15 outside and of those there was one 3 top and a 2 top of teenage girls! But yet they weren't able to take our Groupon reservation that I mistakenly made for the next day! The host and I had a few unprofessional words and he was trying to school/educate me on how Groupon reservations/value work! I paid like 30 dollars for 55 dollars worth of value, but would of probably ended up buying 2-3 appetizers, 2 salads, 4 entrees, drinks for the kids and a bottle of wine; and I'm sure some desert! We probably would of had a bill of around 200 dollars with a 40 dollar tip, that's still 150 dollars and a 40 dollar tip after the Groupon value; but no; the pompous host/waiter sent my wife, 7 year old, 5 year old, and myself on our merry way! I thought we found this nice little gem, but found ourselves treated like we were from the other side of the tracks! I will not be going there to use my Groupon even once it expires for the original purchased value; either I'll get my money back from Groupon or just throw that 30 dollars out the window! If your business doesn't want to take Groupon reservations and treat them like other regular customers (keeping in mind that most people go back to vendors that they discover thorough that site); then don't put your business on there in the first place! I will tell every single person I know how rude that guy was to us, and to go elsewhere! Way to go bud, you just cost yourself a 40+ dollar tip tonight, and caused me to type my first ever Yelp review!

I found this place, via Restaurant.com , and went for a Saturday brunch. I was disappointed. The spot is cute (middle of a neighborhood) but my entire trip just wasn't very enjoyable. We were the only table and the server (assuming owner) was slightly awkward. Don't get me wrong, he was very friendly but the conversation was off. Plus, it was so fricken quiet that we felt like we had to whisper to one another. Food was good. I just love family style. First course was fruit/yogurt and nothing worth noting except it was odd that we were given bread/side plates to eat it on. Second course was the highlight, French toast with warmed syrup. it was just right, light yet dense and syrup wasn't too sweet. Third was scrambled eggs, duck bacon and roasted potatoes. Again, good but nothing worth noting. Last course was apple crisp. The apples included the skin/peel and it was more syrupy and didn't have much crunch. I also thought it strange to have both French toast and apple crisp. Total (with tip and $15 voucher) was about $50, including two adult brunches, one 9 year old brunch (charged for adult), latte, hot chocolate, and soda. I wouldn't recommend brunch here.

Cute cafe set-up with an upscale menu. Not very crowded on a Saturday evening around 6pm. Service was a little quirky, but certainly tolerable. This is one of the more delicious (non-ethnic) meals that I have experienced in the Twin Cities. The chef pays real attention to the details to create truly flavorful dishes. I particularly loved the crostini option of the night: red onion jam with melted gruyere cheese sprinkled with some unidentified herb on a thin, crispy crostini with a light garlicky, buttery taste. Perfect. 4 pieces/$12. I ordered the scallops with the aioli of the night (red pepper), which came with 2 sides. I choose the risotto special (sweet potato, truffle, and spinach) and the roasted veggie dish. The 4 plump scallops were cooked to perfection and not at all tough or chewy. The risotto was excellent, though the truffles did have a bit of that tough and chewy quality to them. Easy to overlook. $25. BF ordered the pasta dish of the night, which was essentially pasta primavera. He had ordered chicken with the pasta, which they forgot. He didn't realize this until he was about 75% through as he was too busy enjoying the dish. I tried his pasta. Nothing special. But to me, pasta is always pasta. BF and I did agree that the sauce was a little watery. $22. While the food was overall very good with a strong attention to every ingredient that went into each dish, the prices should be cut back. Especially that pasta dish--$22 is outrageous for a bowl of veggie pasta. You cannot get away with a moderately priced dinner here. This would prevent me from returning.

We purchase many Groupons and other similar deals, which usually turns us into regulars at the restaurants we try. Unfortunately, Signature Cafe is the only place where I was made to feel like a second class citizen because I had the Groupon. That treatment outweighed any positives this restaurant may have.

Wow never knew this place was here. Service friendly and knowledgeable. Had the flatbread of the night which was quite tasty. I had the spinach salad. Fresh and a nice melding of flavors. My husband had the 5 onion soup which had layered flavor and richness. Duck confit was like butta. Found out we like parsnips too! Only draw back was the bread pudding too dense for us although the sauce was tasty I felt I needed more custard to soak in Wine list is short but has some nice options.

This place is a hidden gem! My wife and I have enjoyed a number of great meals here and I have been reluctant to post a review because I am afraid it will become too popular! The chef's tasting menus are inventive, yet simple, and incredibly delicious. The scallops are perfectly caramelized and perfectly done. Tuesday nights are always gluten free, which you don't run into very often. There is also a nice patio and it is located in a quiet neighborhood. Check it out, but please leave room for us!

Fourth visit to Signature Café, so obviously, we enjoy this place! The food, the casual and friendly ambiance, and the service are always first-rate. Plus, the business is very community-supportive, an added, intangible benefit. Spouse and I shared an app of artichoke gratin which was scrumptious, served with crackers and fresh veggies. For entrées, spouse ordered the daily risotto special while I chose the daily chicken breast special. Both were delightful! My pan-seared chicken breast was melt-in-your-mouth tender and accompanied by sautéed kale and roasted potatoes. We accompanied our meals w wine and topped the evening off with their to-die-for flourless chocolate torte. Our server (Derek, who is also the proprietor) was very friendly and informative. Signature Café remains a special and unique place to dine.

There is nothing to recommend about the Signature Cafe, except not to go. I checked with Yelp customer service and there is currently no way to give a negative rating, otherwise I would give this place a negative 10. It was so bad it was comical. Kudos to them for completing the trifecta though: bad food, bad service, HORRIBLE VALUE. My date and I split a spinach salad that cost $11. I kid you not when I say I think it was one of those salads in a bag poured on a plate straight from the farm fields of Cub Foods. My chicken risotto was wonderfully bland and the boneless, skinless, flavorless chicken breast was microwaved to perfection. At least it was only $22... I'm being sarcastic now. In all honesty, my meal (including salad) was worth $10. I would have been happier grabbing a Gatorade and a couple hotdogs off the rollers at SA (SA is a gas station for any out of towners). With all the new chef driven restaurants popping up around town featuring fun, creative and tasty dishes at a good price; it would be a shame to waste your time and money on a place like this. The only reason to go there is to have a reference point by which to measure other terrible dining experiences.

I have read some of these reviews and I have no idea what they are talking about. I reserved my Groupon and checked the email to make sure it was the right time. It was a wonderful experience! The food was delicious and the portions were perfect for my partner and I. The waiter was wonderful and very professional. I really enjoyed this experience. It was a nice way to unwind after a long week. The crab cake was delicious and tasted like crab not fishy. The roasted carrots I had with the entree were firm and tasted fresh. I also had sweet potato fries which tasted stronger and more delicious than most sweet potato fries I have tried. I loved this place! Maybe these other people got there on bad days but I thought it was a wonderful experience. I forgot to mention that the dressing on their spinach salad was sweet and tangy but a perfect mix. We had a nice cabernet that was delicious with dinner. Be prepared to spend more than your Groupon but it was still worth it. We wanted to try dessert so we split the bread pudding which was firm and served with a rich cream sauce that was delicious. Overall, I am confused what experience these other reviewers had but listening to some of the other customers I think some people have grown far too entitled and use Yelp to lash out.

My experience pretty much matched that of Julie G. of Denver so I don't see much need to repeat the description in my review. When we arrived there was one other couple there. We ate outside which is the only way the place would have bearable. It was much too hot inside and they do not have air conditioning. The waiter was very good until three other people showed up for a table. At that point, with three tables he was overwhelmed. Read Julie G.'s review. Her description of the food was is right on the mark. What they were calling French toast was what I would call bread pudding with maple syrup on it. Since most of the residence in the neighborhood park on the street I wounder where customers find parking when the place is busy. If that ever happens.

Have the meat and potatoes and skip the risotto. Came on a Groupon but I'd had it delivered before. I had scallop risotto and the scallops were the best part. They were buttery and flakey. The tomato risotto tasted like ketchup squirted in rice. Most of the others in my party raved about their food thus the 4 stars.

After seeing the sign pointing down Warwick avenue from Franklin, I thought that this place could either be a hidden gem or off the beaten path for a reason. I am happy to report that this little storefront in the middle of a residential neighborhood is a rare and wondrous treat nestled and tucked away. We were warmly greeted by a knowledgeable and friendly server. She explained the specials with knowledge and passion, and I was hungry just listening to the descriptions! I hemmed and hawed over a few decisions, and she was right there to articulate the differences between this wine or that or to offer suggestions on which entree to choose, without missing a beat! The staff is clearly very knowledgeable and very passionate about not only their food and wine, but food and wine in general. I ended up with a lovely pairing of a Sauvignon Blanc and the Scottish salmon with sauteed greens and the risotto of the day for sides. The wine was exactly as described, and one of the most complex Sauv Blancs that I have ever had! It is nice that they offer the daily risotto as an option as a side, so I was able to try it without getting a whole portion. My mother had the seared scallop with the choice of orange ginger glaze, which is a nice touch to be able to choose a sauce for the scallops. Speaking of the scallops, they were perfectly cooked, just tender without being over or under, and the glaze paired nicely. For sides, she had the sauteed vegetables and potato cakes. This place is clearly there for the customer and diner. They are very knowledgeable and accommodating. Yes they offer gluten-free, but what that means is that they have a real understanding of what ingredients are in which dish. When I inquired about dairy in the risotto, the server knew not only what went into the prepration of the risotto, but also the ingredients that went into the various components, such as the stock. It doesn't come off as mere "food sensativity" pandering, but a sincere knowledge and respect of how their food is made. The atmosphere is similarly clean, crisp, and comfortable. There are small tables partitioned off from the seating counter by a glass and wood wall, and there is an area in back that was occupied by a sizable group clearly enjoying a comfortable dinner party. I will definitely be back to try their tasting menus, as well as beer and wine dinners. They offer "Gluten Free Tuesdays" and "Monday Night Date Nights." This business clearly knows food and how to be welcoming to all. Three cheers to an utter lack of food snobbery while retaining knowledge, passion, and care!

What a perfect place to go on a wonderful evening. Sitting outside is just a perfect under the twinkle lights with great food. The scallops and duck are both great and the servers are delightful, they have date night on Monday also!

Having eaten here several times, I find this place to be hit or miss on the food and service. Their 'specials' are usually pretty interesting. Their onion soup is very tasty - deep in flavor. Their duck confit is delicious. Recently, I ordered a bow tie pasta with chicken and a bleu cheese-white wine broth, and found the flavor to be rather "flat". My dining companion tasted the dish and suggested I ask for more bleu cheese. So I did, and received more crumbles, which I sprinkled on top. While that addition perked things up, it was "bleu cheese out loud" in flavor. Maybe it was just an odd combination to begin with and would be best left "unserved".

I have lived in the area for two years and I never knew this place existed. I saw a sign on Franklin as I was driving home that was advertising for the place, and I was a little intrigued. My first impression was that it was quiet and business was slow, but then I perked up a bit when I saw the wine and espresso bar to the right of me. Business picked up at about 6pm, (1800,) and so did the noise level. There is a nice wine selection, the decor is pleasant, the server was attentive, and the cheese and olive platter that I ordered to go with my wine was delightful. Thank heaven that I did not come here in the middle of Winter though, because I can understand what an earlier reviewer was saying about the temperature! The windows in the front look outdated and prone to a lot of heat loss, and the server intimated as much. Hopefully, this will change before next winter. That being said, it would have been my only complaint. Come here and decide for yourself if it is worth the trip, and leave some more reviews in your wake.

Pretty good, but I don't think we'd go back without a Groupon. I did dig the neighborhood bistro vibe. There aren't a lot of places like that around Minneapolis. And while the tables were a little cramped, the décor was inviting and cozy. Our server was fine, but certainly could have been more friendly. We followed the advice of Yelpers and ordered the crab cake. The inside was full of crab and tasty, but the outside was almost burnt. A disappointing start. The homemade bread was simple and tasty, and served in a cute pail. For the entrée, I ordered the scallops. They were cooked very nicely and seasoned well, but I couldn't really taste the orange-ginger glaze. As a side I ordered the daily risotto, which came with smoked tomatoes and goat cheese. This was the most impressive thing we ordered. The risotto was just toothsome enough, and the flavors were unique and delicious. My dish also came with carrots, which were kind of a disaster. They were uncooked way beyond al dente, so I couldn't even cut them with a knife, and they were cut into these huge chunks, so there was no way to eat them politely without nibbling at them off of my fork. My date ordered the duck confit, which he liked. I was impressed by the crispy skin, but I thought it was really dry. He also got the greens, which had a frighteningly powerful lemon flavor and a stringy texture. His garlic mashed potatoes were excellent though. We ended with the crème caramel, which he liked but I found uninspiring. The butterscotch and raspberry sauces on top were good, but the caramel itself was a flavorless blob.

What a find! Cute little place tucked away - almost hidden - in the neighborhood just south of the U! Actually bought a living social deal awhile ago after checking reviews and menu and I was very pleased with it. We will definitely be going back! It's an intimate little restaurant with really good food! We had the crab cake to start - at the recommendation of our server. YUM! I had the greek salad and man had the french onion soup. I ended up getting the duck leg confit after struggling between that and the scallops. It was very tender and moist served on potato croquets with spinach. Flavors were excellent. Man had the shortribs with sweet potato fried sprinkled on top - which definitely added a cool look to the dish and it also had Udon noodles. This dish was also outstanding! The meat was very tender and delicious, fries were crispy and added a splash of color and flavor. The udon noodles had a lemony taste and were nothing short of awesome. We got a couple of dessert, all I remember was a warm cake of Marzipan set down before me that was absolutely scrumptious and immediately devoured the whole thing. That was amazing. That is all. Definitely worth a visit.

INCREDIBLE! I had the Livingsocial deal, so you never exactly know what to expect with that. My boyfriend and I had a 6:30 reservation and arrived a few minutes early. First off, we thought we got lost or the GPS lied to us since we were in a residential neighborhood... nope, we were in the right place (interesting dynamic). We were promptly greeted and seated. The restaurant was pretty empty for a Friday night at 6:30 PM, but we didn't look too much into it. Our server David came up and warmly welcomed us. Right off the bat... DAVID WAS FANTASTIC. He is a shining example of what a server should be! Attentive but not smothering, knowledgeable but not a know-it-all. He knew precisely when to approach us and when to back off and let us enjoy our meal together. The Menu....where do I begin? We did the chef's tasting menu with the wine pairings for each course. Frist course.... manchego cheese platter with fig compote. Yummy, yummy, yummy! It was paired with a tempranillo, excellent. Round 2, an amazing winter squash soup with a rich zinfandel. I have always been on the fence when it comes to squash, but this knocked it out of the park! The toasted seeds on top gave it some nice texture and a little crunch. Main course was a chicken and shrimp paella. In all honesty, it was more like a risotto, but very tasty and filling. The sauvignon blanc pairing was excellent, a nice hint of grapefruit. Final course was rice pudding. I have never been a fan of rice pudding but I had a few bites and it was tasty. Perhaps the best thing about the chef's menu was that it matched the weather so well. It was a chilly and damp night last night, so the heavy and rich food was PERFECT! (I want more of that soup!!) One last thing to point out and I give extra style points for this... the chef came out and talked to us and brought us a few courses himself. This is huge! I like to feel a connection with a restaurant and for the chef come out and describe his creations, that is something greatly appreciated and so rare! This establishment is a true gem! After my boyfriend and I left, I sat in the car texting every foodie I know telling them to check this place out! We will definitely be going back! Thank you Signature Café!

Let me start by saying that when this restaurant was owned by Tony and Nathalie it was my favorite restaurant ever--a place that I always wanted to go to celebrate or just because. But that was because the food was great and the service was friendly and enthusiastic--and it's nice to support a small, local establishment. I remember being there on a slow day and Nathalie came over with a catalog asking for a second opinion on the plates she was considering purchasing. When friends of ours (other regulars) had a baby--they received a gift from Tony and Nathalie! Tony and Nathalie were just fun and thoughtful people who got to know and enjoyed their customers. Well, Tony and Nathalie sold Signature Cafe a few years back... And while the place has remained largely the same in appearance, it is not at all the same place and I feel like I need to warn people. This review is based on two trips to the "new" Signature Café once for dinner and once for lunch. The first trip was in the first month after the new owners took over and the second was yesterday. The first time we were eager to see how the new owners may have put their own stamp on the place. We were delighted to see that our favorite dish was still on the new menu, so we ordered it. We'd been ordering it for years--so we knew what to expect. We even asked if it was the same recipe ahead of ordering and were assured that it was the same. Well, when the food came out the beds of noodles that the short ribs were supposed to sit on were essentially non-existent. It would have been funny if it wasn't our dinner. There were literally about 5 noodles each on our plates. We asked the server (also the chef and owner) about the lack of noodles. With no hint of apology or recognition that it was bad form he admitted that he didn't have enough noodles and shorted us massively. He then stood there dully. Finally he said that he could give us more noodles when they were cooked. So 15 mins later (when the meat was essentially eaten--otherwise it would have been cold) a plate of noodles was plopped down, with no hint of apology or recognition that this was bad service. We left incredibly disappointed and irritated-- we hoped that the experience may have been due to the fact that they were new and not an indication that our favorite restaurant had been ruined. Well, I finally went back yesterday for lunch. The same chef/owner was the server. I was immediately a little uneasy since we walked in and were greeted with what must be his "signature" zombie-like "greeting" that holds no enthusiasm or welcome and were seated. They were out of the soup that I was planning to order so I had to go back to the drawing board. I asked for a recommendation and was met with a blank stare and was told "It's all good." I'm glad that he believes that, but that was not helpful at all and was yet another annoying interaction. We ordered and were served our food. After watching my companion attempt to eat her chicken sandwich and then eventually give up and pick it apart to eat it with a knife and fork I asked her what was up. She said the chicken was tough and chewy and couldn't be eaten as a sandwich. Now we were both staring at the chicken--she cut another piece and realized what the issue was. The chicken was almost completely raw. I've been to restaurants where I've had chicken I "suspected" was undercooked--but this was flat out raw. I've never been served such undercooked chicken. Anyway, she stopped eating the chicken and just ate the salad it came with. When the guy came to check on us she told him about the chicken and he looked at it--again with that same dull, non-apologetic look (the same one we got way back when with the noodle debacle) and never admitted that the chicken was undercooked. He did offer to get her another dish--but we'd been there for an hour and I was done with my meal, so clearly that wasn't a viable option. Then he walked away muttering that he would "take off a couple of dollars" from the bill. I almost laughed considering that her meal was essentially inedible and potentially dangerous. Again we never received an apology and no real effort was made to "make it right." The food clearly isn't as good as it was when Tony and Nathalie owned the restaurant and this owner really needs some sort of training in hospitality. I do understand that at the very best restaurants mistakes are made--but thanks to the lack of any hint of apology or any real attempt to ensure that despite the mistakes that the experience was still a good one I will not be back and cannot recommend that anyone else go to this restaurant either. It's a shame, as I love to support small, local establishments--and think others do too. But, just because this place is small and local does not mean that they have the right to offer poor service and poor quality food. What a huge disappointment.

WOW. If you do not experience good food/service at a restaurant, it is awkward enough. But if after you politely bring your issues to your waiter's attention, pay, tip, and leave, then the owner calls you on your personal cell number, leaves you a nasty voicemail denying your complaints about service and food, and tells you not to come back, you feel compelled to alert the public. This was hands down the worst dining experience and food we have experienced in Minnesota. I usually only feel the need to write good reviews, but this place is the exception to the rule. (scroll down to the last paragraph for the spoiler alert on our late night voice mail from the owner Derek!) The service was terrible (there were three tables seated and everything took forever). When given the beer list, we tried ordering 3 of 7 of the beers, each of which the waitress came back and told us they were out of due to the brewers fault. We finally gave up and settled with water. We had purchased a livingsocial deal for an appetizer, two salads/soups, two entrees, and a dessert, all of which were disappointing. The crostini were burnt, the french onion soup was tooth-achingly sweet, the salad was bland, and the pot roast was bone dry. When we complained about the meal, the waitress offered to get us a new entree but we felt like waiting another 45 minutes for more of the same was not worth it. After not touching the pot roast, they charged us for the full meal, not comping a thing (not even a coffee) coupled with horrible service. The icing on the cake? After leaving a written note about the service we experienced, THE OWNER/CHEF DEREK CALLED BACK THE PHONE NUMBER WE RESERVED OUR TABLE UNDER AND LEFT US A NASTY MESSAGE DENYING ALL OF OUR COMPLAINTS ("you didn't wait that long, the beers being out of stock was not our fault, and if you did not like the food you should not complain to the server") AND FINISHED WITH TELLING US "I'M SORRY, IF THAT'S THE ATTITUDE YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE YOU'RE WELCOME NOT TO COME BACK". I'm sorry but that has to be against the law. I was absolutely blown away by how awful this place was. Heed our warning and do not go here.

We keep forgetting about the Signature, which is ridiculous considering we've never had a bad meal there (including our wedding-reception lunch). I didn't even know Nathalie and Tony had sold it, because our favorite seared scallops still were on the menu (we asked when we noticed the political stuff was gone). Anyway, everything still was great and in fact better, because now you get to choose two sides, including the daily risotto and roasted vegetables. And now they serve Jackson's gelato . . . I hadn't planned to get a dessert, but who can resist pistachio gelato? Anyway, now I've liked their Facebook page, so I hope we'll remember to go there more often. In summer, their lovely little patio is THE place to be.

This was head and shoulders the worst restaurant experience we've had in years. We showed up for lunch about 1:15 in the afternoon - they serve lunch until 2 and we did not have reservations. The sign on the door says "reservations recommended." The man I assume is the owner promptly launched into an extended and unfriendly lecture about how we must have reservations, how he would turn us away if they were busy, etc. It was really quite embarrassing. The kicker: there wasn't a sole in the place! Not one customer! Empty! So we decided to tough it out (I'm always interested in seeing how bad things can get after a poor start). As we're continuing to be lectured to, we are seated at a table. First impression: the place is disheveled and kind of grubby. The owner was dressed very casually and wearing dirty pants. Not the working-in-the kitchen kind of dirt but the they-haven't-seen-the-inside-of-a-washing-machine-for-a-few-weeks kind of dirt. Some of the silverware was dirty and had to be replaced. The rest of the silverware has that kind of scale they can get when they are only washed by machine, They needed a good scrubbing with a Brillo pad or the equivalent. I ordered the first item on the menu, the Hot Beef. Sorry, that won't be available until 2. Are they out of it or do they just not serve it for lunch? No explanation. So I ordered the Pulled Pork instead. Not so good. Too salty, not much flavor, and the bun was dry. My wife ordered the Greek Salad. Turns out it's nothing more that some greens, feta cheese, and Greek olives. To be fair, she did like the pesto hummus that accompanied it. I can't comment on the food available overall; judging by some or the reviews on Yelp it can be good. But the major problem here isn't the food it's the pretentious and hostile attitude of the owner. I note that there a couple Yelp reviews the parallel our experience. He needs to keep in mind that the customer is at the end of the food chain. He's not doing anyone a favor by displaying such an arrogant and negative attitude. Some tact training would do him some good. As for us, you only get one chance to make a good impression. We won't be back

I ordered the crab cake sandwich. The homemade bun was inedible. I couldn't tell if it was under backed or if it was just days old. The color was off and didn't look like bread...and wasn't fresh. I ate the crab cake alone and was it was "good". However, left a little unsatisfied, feeling hungry. I have eaten at Signature many times for dinner and have always had an outsanding meal. This was nowhere comparable and will for sure, never agree to a lunch there again.

My girlfriend and I had the chef's tasting menu, the food was just enough and the wine pairing was also just as fantastic, this is a spot I would love to go visit again

I wanted to like it better. Cool place tucked in a nice neighborhood. Service was good, but I think they were thrown off by a large party that came in shortly after we ordered. The group was expected, so it was a bit disappointing to feel a little forgotten. Started with bruschetta of mushrooms and Gruyere. It was solid, but not a lot of flavor (good cheesebread with mushrooms). My girlfriend ordered the scallops which were done well, but a little cool when they came out. Her Brussels sprouts were not cooked through and were tough to get through even with a fork and butter knife. I ordered the risotto with salmon, and was much happier with my pick. The risotto was tasty and the salmon was superb. All in all I have mixed feelings. It was just good enough to try again, but the price was not worth it. We will try elsewhere for the money.

Do not go for the brunch, it is overpriced and bland. It also feels a bit "dirty" inside and could use some cleaning. Everyone else here on Yelp seems to have had a good experience and probably just ordered off their normal menu. I advise you to not get anything buffet-oriented here. On the bright side, the staff was very friendly, just a bad ambiance and bad food.

My oh my - great confit , great service. Closest thing to five stars I have had in the area ( I don't think I have ever given 5 stars yet - this place almost tipped me there). Only drawback was the roasted veggies that needed to be selectively cooked - beets were awesome, parsnips needed a few more minutes. But if you have not been there, it is a must go kind of place. I am sure we will be back on more than occasion - I have not had confit that good outside of France till now.

Lovely wait staff, tasty appetizer flatbread, nice patio. All four entrees were very weak, and quite a shock to the wallet for the poor quality. We really wanted to like this place.

This wasn't the kind of restaurant I was expecting. We had to find a quality restaurant before going to the Orpheum and decided to come here. The food was excellent! Along with great service and good overall atmosphere, this was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time. I would definitely recommend Signature Cafe for any high end occasion.

For years, I have walked passed this quaint little cafe, nestled in Prospect Park. I always thought it looked so cute, European and that I should dine there. So, it became the destination for Valentine's dinner. While the crostini appetizer and pot roast were both phenomenal! The ambiance just ruined it. I can't remember dining in a place with brighter lighting. For a cute, quaint place - lights on full blast don't really help give off that vibe, nor did the neon "open" sign in the main window. The Pot Roast is worth going back for, but the place could use a bit of a makeover.

Ate at Signature last night. I've now been there a handful of times, and I tell myself everytime that I go - "I have to go more often." The restaurant is SO small - very quaint, intimate. It has never been full anytime I have went. It's definitely an "older" clientele, and I'm a younger person. Like others have said, it is totally a hidden gem - not many people know about it. I first tried Signature about a year on the recommendation of a friend for a first date restaurant. I have since recommended Signature multiple times. The owners are outstanding. Natalie (the owner/chef) last night found out I owned a small, independent restaurant as well, and came out and chatted for a brief bit. She always makes folks feel welcomed - like home. The food... it indeed is amazing. Perfectly-seared scallops, amazing pot roast, great fresh fish, good produce. There's not really a whole lot that I can complain about here. It's truly a restaurant that I walk out of, and am happy about being able to support. Go try it!

Haven't been here in many years and happy to say it is still wonderful. Not too many places in Twin Cities where you get this level of quality...at an afforable price. The new owners kept a couple of the old favorites so I had to have the pork shortribs with sweet n spicy udon noodles and my husband the pot roast for old times' sake. Had the artichoke gruyere appetizer with a nice glass of wine :oP Will definitely go back to try some of the new entrees. They owners believe in sustainable farming practices and food is always fresh and as local as can be...the kind where you say mmmm after each bite. Best to get a reservation as not very many tables.

I am stingy with my 5-star reviews, but Signature Cafe earned one for great service and even better food. I can't add much to what others have said other than to echo their praise. The roast beef that I has was spectacular. Three of us went on a Sunday evening in January, and it was mostly quiet, which was fine by us. I'm not sure whether this happens every time, but the chef actually came out to see if we were done with our crostini (the daily choice was white bean with tahini sauce) before she prepared the entrees. Now that's service! I'll definitely be back in the summer to try some of the seasonal produce and maybe the outdoor dining others mentioned. Get here soon. It's worth it.

I really wanted to like this place but it simply isn't that great. The location is great. The employees are incredibly nice. And the ambiance is perfect. Unfortunately the food is simply ok. Not bad but not really that good. I went for both lunch and dinner and had the same impression. The portobello sandwich was decent but having it on a plain hamburger bun took away from it, the duck was a bit dry, and the salmon overcooked. The one positive was that the chocolate cake I had for dessert was very good. The other problem is that the restaurant is priced in a manner that places it in direct competition with places that simply have better food. I hope this changes (either the quality goes up or the price lowered).

Just went here today for my boyfriend's company holiday party and had the most amazing lunch. Everything about it was delicous. We shared the artichoke dip, basil pizza, and calamari for appetizers. I had the apple, brie cheese, walnut spinach salad with honey dijon dressing for my starter and the pot roast with potatoes for my main course. I'm not kidding EVERYTHING was amazing. The chef explained that she buys her meat from local farms and grows her own vegetables. Majority of the menu options were gluten free, even the amazing desserts. I loved that the restaurant is tucked away in a residential neighborhood. The owner/chef and her husband were very nice and provided excellent service. I can't wait to go back!

Signature Cafe makes me smile and think ahh Signature Cafe. I just love how welcoming and comfortable the place feels. As others have stated, Signature does feel somewhat European, especially when the patio is open in the Summer. The owner (Nathalie) is a little nuts, but very funny. She definitely adds a charm to the place. While I totally love the dinner and lunch menu, I'm beyond bummed that Signature does not do their Sunday Brunch any longer. Oh. My. God. Their brunch was divine. The brunch had maybe 6-8 dishes in warmers. Technically, it was a buffet, but it was more family style, but for the whole restaurant. Usually there was a baked french toast which was like a bread pudding, a strata, a whole bunch of different desserts, and some type of salad. So so good. It's so good, that when my husband and I got married, we had Nathalie prepare the Sunday Brunch for our wedding reception. My cranky grandmother-in-law still raves about the brunch, and nothing is good enough for her. You know the type. Signature Cafe had to stop doing the brunch because City Pages featured it in their "Best Brunch" issue a few years ago and it became too popular and they couldn't keep doing a quality brunch because everything was made in small batches. BOO!!! Every time I'm at Signature I chide Nathalie about when the brunch will be back... Since I can't have the brunch anymore, I still go for dinner. I have enjoyed the pastas and the lemon chicken breast. The chicken has a nice buttery lemon sauce and grilled perfectly. I always seem to find a new favorite wine based on the staff suggestions. The patio is a great place to sit on a warm summer night. It's super cute with the garden lights and if it's still sunny out, the neighborhood has huge trees so it's usually pretty shaded. One time we were sitting on the patio and Nathalie proceeds to call the squirrels. Apparently she named the squirrels and feeds them whatever scraps she has around. The crazy thing is that the squirrels actually ran to her. It's just perfect. Great food, great space, and great service.

Try their "Tasting Dinners" that are paired with wine at every course. They are big on fresh and local. We had 4 courses paired with wine for only $35 per person!! Great food and a GREAT DEAL!

This restaurant gets five stars, and I'm fairly stingy. I love the non-starched linins, the feeling that your presence at the Signature Cafe is genuinely appreciated. There's a rustic, almost European quality about the place that makes me feel like I'm in someone's home. The owners are always on hand, cooking really great portions of incredibly flavorful food. It's such a gem. I love the fact that I can go on a Monday night (when a lot of other favorite restaurants are closed) and eat a four course prix fixe menu for $40 to include wine pairings! I honestly can't imagine how they cover their food/wine costs at that price. They always pour really nice wines, the times I've dined there I've had some really cool wines that I've never seen anywhere else. I can't say enough good stuff about this place. The whole wine list is barely marked more than retail prices. I love it! I've taken a lot of friends there for that unpretentious, high-value vibe they've got going on! The wine dinners are fantastic, too! Sometimes offered on Sundays. I think the schedule for them is on their website.

This was a cute neighborhood place tucked in an unassuming location. Food was generall good- artichoke appetizer was only ok and salads were fine. The salmon was very fresh and the scallops were cooked perfectly- only complaint is that we are both sauce lovers and the salmon and scallops were totally bare and especially with the dry cabbage and grains (quinoa? I can't recall) it was begging for some moisture. We went back a second time and they seem to be afraid of any sauce which is weird. But the wine pairings were spot on and a lot of fun so I upped the stars to 4. Prices are a little high for the amount and quality of food.

We first visited the Signature Cafe about five years ago and have introduced it to friends and family -- all have enjoyed it! Natalie and Tony are the owners/hosts/servers ... frankly that's one of the things we like about it because they're attentive and never fail to stop and chat. We've never had a disappointing meal and think this is one of the better and reasonably priced bistros around.

Signature Cafe is an absolute GEM. I used to work close to this neighborhood, and stopped in there with a good friend for dinner. It is in a fantastic spot - right in the middle of a Prospect Park neighborhood complete with winding streets, vines, and cool houses. The food was absolutely amazing (we both got the scallops) and the wine was delicious. The only thing that stopped it from getting 5 stars was the service. Now, I worked in the restaurant business for several years, so I know when people are slammed beyond belief. I know that they are so short-handed, they realize that even the best service they can give is sub-par. That's the kind of service we got at Signature. It seemed like the owners were also the hosts and the food runners and the servers. I felt sorry for them, they were working so hard. It's a little bit harder to enjoy my meal when I keep sympathizing with the staff. In spite of it all, I know our server did the best he could given the circumstances. Seriously though, the food was amazing.

So the best part about the Signature, after the food and the flower filled patio is Natalie. I guess she once held a fairly prominent position in D.C. under Bill Clinton and has some fascinating stories about the man, the legend. The summer is the best time of year to go, but they serve up a cozy, hearty meal year round.

We absolutely love this restaurant! It is a very special little gem hidden away in the heart of the prospect park neighborhood. Everything from the pot roast to the scallops to the ribs to the daily special is wonderful. (if they have the roasted red pepper bisque be sure to get it!) Signature has a cozy atmosphere and in the summer it has a fantastic patio. This is a place we always bring friends and out of town visitors to. *EDIT* The place is under new ownership and has a new chef, this review only applies to the old owner/chef.
