Fresh local ice cream at its finest! Sebastian Joe's has the feel of a local coffee shop where every one knows your name. It is a hub of local art and comfy couches/chairs. The flavors stay fairly constant day to day but when you have something as good as they do, why change it. Nicollet Pothole is the star of the show here. If you like chocolate ice cream then this is one flavor you must drive any distance to try. Other favorites include Pavarotti (banana ice cream with chocolate shavings) and a really nice raspberry chocolate chip ice cream. They do serve coffee and various pastries but I have yet to try them. Honestly they look a bit stale in the case when compared to the cones they made just hours or even minutes ago. When I am in the mood for ice cream this is usually my go to place. Friendly service, comfy atmosphere and great ice cream all in one location!

I was on the hunt for some local MN ice cream and the shuttle driver suggested this place (granted he was new to the area and it was the only place that was suggested to him a few months ago). They had a lot of flavors, but I settled on vanilla to give a fair assessment of the place. It was so good! Not too sweet and it hit the spot. The guy at the counter was nice and there wasn't a huge line. I'd definitely go back.

Cinnamon is far and away my favorite ice cream flavor. So when I saw it on the board at SJ's, I didn't even bother doing a taste test first and ordered a scoop right off the bat. I don't regret that decision in the slightest - it was loaded with speckles of warm and cozy spice that provided the perfect compliment to the cool and creamy base. It was perfectly delicious on its own, but I can totally see myself buying pints of this stuff to pair with apple or pumpkin pie come fall. Any excuse to get more of this ice cream is a good one! My husband ordered a sundae with blueberries, honey, walnuts and whipped cream - goes by the name of Big Bill's Blueberry or something to that effect. Definitely a winner. The spoonful I stole was very yummy and nicely balanced between the slight tart of the berries and the sweetness of the honey. Despite the long line we encountered when we first arrived, I don't think our wait was more than 10 minutes at the most. The staff worked quickly, coming down the line to us rather than waiting for space at the counter to clear. I'd like to come back at a less busy time and taste test some of the unique mixes I saw on the menu, like the Nicollet Pot Hole and the Chocolate Coyote (but I do wish they would post what flavors are actually in these specialties on the board). But let's face it, I'm probably going to order the cinnamon nine times out of ten.

As I've written before, I'm from Milwaukee, the home of frozen custard. I'm partial to the ulta-creamy texture and richness of the frozen custard, and I often times find that ice cream falls short. That being said, I think Sebastian Joe's is good, I don't think it's as great as everyone around the city seems to think it is. They offer a lot of great flavors, which is the best part. My particular favorite is their Pavarotti flavor, which is banana ice cream with caramel and chocolate chips. They have a lot of flavors that have nuts in them, which sucks for me since I'm allergic. So it limits my options. I do think it's expensive, though! Bring $10, because $5 won't be enough. In the summertime, there is always a line. They do have a nice patio outside with tables and chairs for you to sit in. I like that it's next door to Patina, so I can take my cone in while looking a beautiful knick-knacks that I have no need for.

  • Andrew W.

SJ's is somewhere where I'd take any out of town guest in the summer. It's so ridiculously good, I think I put on an extra 5lbs when I used to live in uptown thanks to it. Pavarotti is my favorite, the combination of flavors doesn't sound as awesome as it is so just try it and shut up. You really cant go wrong with anything there so if you're some kind of monster that dislikes it try something else.

Sweet baby jesus. It scares me that I live only a couple blocks away from this place. I could be the size of Mount Fuji in mere weeks now that I've finally tried Sebastian Joe's. The sight of two crazy people walking down Hennepin eating ice cream in this weather probably freaked people out a little bit, but I could go back right now and get more blueberry ice cream if they were still open. Not too sweet, not too sour, just perfect blueberry flavor with that hint of extra-creaminess. Who knew heaven could come in a cup? I also thought it was sweet of them to give discounts based on how cold it is outside; since it was round 10 degrees today, 5% off. And down the line towards -20 degrees, where you get 25% off your purchase. Discounts to eat ice cream? Can I just say, "Heck yes!"?

taste like gelato and not too sweet! good stuff! get the pavarotti.. that's what rocked my huge ass! (that's where it's going when you get ice cream close to midnight) there is a line for ice cream near midnight.. this joint must be it.. and i was right.. pavarotti taste like banana bread.. the danish nut roll, not so bad. just that it had wayyy too much nuts in one spoonful. the oreos taste like home-made -nice gooey and american. need to say more? come visit when you are in MN! oh, the 4, 6, 8 oz serving.. it's the size. since i had 3 scoops, they charge me the 8 oz and an extra something the cashier pulled out. total is about $7? sweet!

Great ice cream along with great service. My wife and I enjoyed the variety of flavored and the outdoor patio. We will be back the next time we are in town.

When you think about getting ice cream in Minneapolis, most peeps think about S. Joes! And why would they not, it is simply amazing home made ice cream + they have board games you can check out! Perfect for a summer evening or really anytime or the year! My favorite by far is the Strawberries and Cream Sunday. It great flavor, real strawberries (so healthy ya know), but not too sweet like some of the other flavors. I like sweet, but something about the extra cream they use and the sweatness, sometimes makes me sick. But the reason I actually gave this place 4 stars and not 5 is because of the service. When I go to an ice cream shop, I expect lines, impatient people, etc... I expect all of that, but the one thing I never expect are mean service people. You work at an ice cream shop, there is no reason to hate your job and be in a bad mood! There is one person I am talking about specifically, older, pudgier... with this infectiously bad attitude, that just brings you down and honestly makes me never want to go in there if I see him working! Get rid of him and I'll change my rating.

YUM! I like this location as much as I like the Linden Hills one, except that I like that the Linden Hills one has more seating. However, this one has PATINA next door...and what's more fun than that? Recently I've had the Oreo, Peanut Butter Chunk and Salted Caramel ice creams here...all have been delicious. I've been dying to try one of the yummy looking chocolate dipped ice cream bars in the case on the left hand side when you're in line, but I've been too tempted by the flavors on the board. One day...

I've been back several times since my initial visit. I love Sebastian Joe's. Their Nicolelt Pothole flavor is my favorite. It's Rocky Road + Sea Salt. I love how unpredictable and fun the flavors are. There's a stable of 8-10 and then the rest all rotate. What's it going to be this time? So exciting! The pup loves it here too. He gets to sit outside and if he's lucky, a munch of ice cream covered cone.

Perhaps the best ice cream on the planet! Like so good! AMAZING, and I live in the land of foodies and local ice cream places (San Francisco). My fav. is the Raspberry Chocolate Chip and vanillia. SO GOOD!

  • Alison M.

This place is no joke. When they say cookie chunks, they mean half a cookie. When they say hot fudge, they mean so hot it will turn your ice cream to soup by the time you've paid for it. When they say "Ridiculous Sundae," they mean RIDONKULOUS. I went for the first time tonight and got a sundae/bowl of ice cream soup. I'd recommend getting scoops instead, because otherwise you don't really get to taste the ice cream. The flavors I had were Oreo and Mint Milano and they were great, but they were soup. Next time, it's just you and me, Cappuccino.

I hadn't had Sebastian Joe's ice cream in 20 years and hot dang it is still as good as it ever was. The egg nog was a particular highlight.

Sebastian Joe's is a Minneapolis institution, especially in the summer months! The casual atmosphere combined with fresh, quality ice cream makes Sebastian Joe's a destination. For as many times as I've stopped at Sebastian Joe's, I haven't tried anything other than their Oreo Ice Cream... It's that good! I've planned dinner around their Oreo Ice Cream aka I made it my dinner! The workers are always friendly and they offer water for your dogs or to cool you down after the run you took to work off the ice cream before eating it! Highly recommended!

Consistently our favorite place to go for ice cream. Amazing, unique flavors. The fruits flavors taste just like the fruit. The crazy combinations are terrific. Will be back with the family much as our waistlines can take.

  • Sarah J.

They make great ice cream, what can I say? I'm not even an ice cream kind of girl. It's too cold. But I've learned to make an exception for SJ's. My only complaint is that I have to choose a flavor. The one time I asked the guy to just give me a cone of his favorite he looked at me like I'd spit on his scoop. I just don't like to choose, mister! But I don't have to choose when they have the lemon almond ice cream...called something like Dava di Limone. I know, it sounds kind of gross. Who likes lemon ice cream? Trust me. It's delicious. I'd pass over chocolate for it. I also love that they serve coffee. Sometimes I pour some over the my ice cream.

I love ice cream! and recommend this place to everyone else that does too. My favorite flavors include Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chocolate Chip Banana. This place has unique flavors at a decent price. Plus the staff is very friendly. Definitely the place to go when you have ice cream cravings!!!

Growing up, ice cream was off limits for lunch. Now that I'm an adult, I say fooey to that stupid rule...I mean, come on, the calcium and vitamin D have to score some nutritional points, right? Yummmy. No better way to spend a Monday lunch than licking a cone of their amazingly fantastic Oreo ice cream.

Located in a busy but chilled area of uptown Minneapolis. Love the sidewalk seatings too, very peaceful atmosphere. Being a pistachio lover, I would be glad to see that flavor as an option there or any ice cream shop cause I am always on the hunt, but so I went for the chocolate sorbet and that was very rich in flavor. Overall very smooth experience. Nice, happy staff it seems.

  • J P.

The ice cream is good and all but it's not worth it for how much you pay and how little you get. Not very generous with the servings what so ever. Go to any other ice cream shop..theyre not scared to give you a good helping.

We chose Sebastian Joe's since the price point was cheaper than Izzy's. The location is very cool and in a pretty trendy area in Uptown. The building is cool and very hipster. The staff is very patient and kind. I got the Strawberry Sorbet which was pretty good. (I prefer to not eat dairy if possible) There was not as many non dairy options as Izzy's but it was good to have a few choices. My husband and my son each had cookies and cream. (Which was very good, however, my husband did not like the waffle cone.) My daughter had the regular chocolate ice cream on a waffle cone which was she liked. If you compare it to Izzy's in regards to taste, Izzy's is better in terms of quality of the ice cream, the cones, and choices. However, the price was more affordable and our bill was ten dollars cheaper than Izzy's. Great staff and great location, I would recommend this place.

The ice cream was nothing special actually I have had better at other places but the worst part was the customer service the server actually refused to let my 3 year old use the rest room even though I had just ordered ice cream and left a generous tip but nevertheless we will never give them business again sorry you lost a great customer but thank you for making our first visit an unpleasant one but also our last

Hands down, my favorite ice cream in Minneapolis. I've been coming here since I was little kid so it has nostalgia factor too. My absolute fav flavor is the raspberry chocolate chip. I usually either get half raspberry chocolate chip (they always have it) and half another rotating flavor that would go well with it (almond or coconut usually). The angelica (coffee and hazelnut) is really good too and I usually don't like coffee ice cream. My standard when I was a kid was the oreo ice cream and they have really good waffle cones too. And did you know you can buy pints to take home with you? You should probably buy a pint, seriously.

If it's a hot summer night, everyone will have the same idea about going to Sebastian Joe's. The line can wrap around the back of the store, but I've found the wait time is never too egregious. The good news is, Sebastian Joe's is delicious year-round, no matter the time of day! The old standards: -Oreo ice cream. It's thick and creamy and better than any oreo ice cream you've had before. -Raspberry chocolate chip! Nothing more to say, it's just amazing. -Nicollet Pothole. This one actually isn't my favorite. I love chocolate, but it's a bit overwhelming with all the different ingredients. It might be your thing, though! The nonstandards: -My favorite ice cream ever ever ever is the Chocolate Amaretto. Every time I go I hope it'll be on the board, but too often I'm disappointed. It's subtle and delicious and perfect. Please make it a regular! -Many different creative flavors. You might be surprised that vanilla basil ice cream is actually pretty good. Take a risk and sample something unusual. Anyway, try this place. It's the best.

I love Sebastian Joe's with their unique flavours and tasty extras. This location isn't as lovely as the lakes location (they have a gorgeous, welcoming patio) but this one is more convenient being right off Hennepin in Uptown.

  • Karl W.

The salty caramel is so incredible that I only had a sample last time and I am craving to come back for a whole cone as I write this review (I want to add some cashews too it). I wish they had just Raspberry, as the choco chips are too much for me in it, same story with the Pavarotti, although both are fantastic. The waffle cone is not too impressive, but any of the flavors in a bowl or regular sugar cone can create a mind blowing experience. Parking is a bitch, I always play circle around the block games to find a spot. My favorite locale is a block north on Dupont where you can find my new friend Emo the cat who is a Calico and quite friendly.

I'm a total ice cream addict and this is my favorite ice cream in the Twin Cities! I'm yet to have a flavor I don't like! Their ice cream is creamy, smooth and delicious - just as ice cream should be. Highly recommend the Nicollet Pothole - rich, chocolatey, and a bit salty. Their salted caramel and oreo are my two other favorites. I'd also recommend their oreo sundae, with oreo ice cream, crushed oreos, fudge, and whipped cream!

    (5)
  • Miguel W.

Best ice cream I've ever had! We make sure to stop by every time we're in town. I love the salted caramel and the wife loves the Oreo. Friendly staff and as a bonus, one of my wife's favorite stores, Patina, is right next door. I highly recommend stopping by Sebastian Joe's whenever you're in the area!

  • Mary Jane A.

Great service, chill location, lots of flavors and not all your normal flavors. I had Surley Bender, yum! Great Salted caramel and Nicollet Pothole for the kids. Gluten free options. Is a bit pricey!

They are known for having freshly made ice cream everyday and they show you how they make it. They allow you have a lot of samples and the line can sometimes be so long, that it will wrap through the restaurant! I had the coffee-hazelnut and the apple crisp. This place was absolutely delicious and one of the top 5 ice creams I have had. This is an amazing place during the summer!

Cute little old school Ice cream shop right off Hennepin on a side street, also close to lake of the isles. We rode bike & enjoyed a small cup of home made ice cream. Blueberry sorbet did not disappoint.

I was looking for a place to get an after dinner dessert, saw the reviews, and thought why not- I was not disappointed. It was a Sunday night, so I wasnt expecting it to be busy....so wrong. The line went all the way through the store, and was starting to wind around. Despite this it moved fairly quickly with the cashiers helping people before they even reached the counter. I ended up getting a chai cone, so so so delicious. Im a chai addict, so I was in heaven. Just the right amount of sweetness. The prices were reasonable, under 4 for a single scoop cone. Overall, a good experience

    (4)
  • Ryan F.

I really like their Ice Cream. The location is fun. The people are friendly. I know that quality cost $$, but $12 for 2 cones (one a double, one a single) is just too much to make this a regular spot. Been here a few times but just cannot justify making it a regular spot. Their salty carmel and Nicollet pothole ice creams are absolutely amazing.

    (3)
  • Shaunte W.

If you're looking for good quality ice cream, in a cozy atmosphere, where you can chat with a friend over cones and/or lattes, sneak a kiss on a first date, or 2nd, satisfy a sweet tooth craving late at night....this is your spot. Texture, taste, price and service were all very satisfying. Can't wait to go back.

  • Alicia M.

This is by far my favorite ice cream place in the Twin Cities. I love it! They always have a variety of different flavors - and if you are looking for something that is not out (e.g. a mint chocolate chip type), they are happy to check in back. I love many of the flavors but really recommend the vanilla. I know it is boring but it is delicious!!

    (5)
  • Ashleigh C.

Two because the ice cream is pretty good but nothing special. I had the apple crisp icecream. The front people are pretty snotty. And it's way too expensive. Just balancing a small ball of ice cream on a cone. Cones are kind of stale too. Not coming back. Dq is much more worth my money.

    (2)
  • Daniel A.

There's nothing I'm going to say that has already not been stressed, especially by the so called "foodies." Short & sweet - this spot has ice cream. Ice cream is good. Sebastian Joe's ice cream is better than most (again, taste is subjective right?) Personally their ice cream is so good that I asked them to cater for my wedding & subsequently named my cat after Sebastian Joe. Go eat some!

    (5)
  • Chloe F.

I was really excited to get some ice cream after going to the Sculpture Garden. Boy I was disappointed. I had two scoops of ice cream in a hand waffle cone. The hand waffle cone was definitely from last night because it was way too stale. I read the reviews and decided to get the salted caramel, but it was just vanilla ice cream with over-sweeten caramel. Sadly, I was just not able to finish the old hand waffle cone... I wouldn't mind paying $$ for some good ice cream, but I really didn't understand what's so great about this place.

    (2)
  • Whitney P.

Worth the wait any day! The ice cream is delicious but the location is just a little awkward (parking is tough, not great or a lot of outside seating)...stop by after a visit to the Sculpture Gardens or on your way to Lake of the Isles.

    (4)
  • Joey F.

I hate to say it, but I think Sebastian Joe's is a little overrated. This place is super busy and the ice cream is just average. Couldn't find a lot of flavors that sound appetizing. This is just a go to place because it doesn't have much competition for what is around it.

    (3)
  • Heidi L.

The flavors at Sebastian Joe's are pretty hit or miss. Hits for me are the Pavarotti (banana, caramel, chocolate chip) is my go-to, and when in season, the garlic-chocolate chip-almond, which is absolutely fabulous. Admittedly I love weird flavors, and I think Sebastian Joe's does the garlic and banana flavors pretty subtly. Nothing overpowering. Note that the texture is pretty standard -- nothing extremely creamy or smooth. However, I've found their one-flavor ice creams to be kind of grainy textured -- I'm thinking of the ginger, green tea flavors in particular. Perhaps the mix-ins distract from that - so I'm sticking with those. 5 for the unique flavors, 1 star down for inconsistency.

    (4)
  • Anil M.

Really loved the ice cream here, looks like a family owned business. Very nice people and not to mention amazing scoops. I would suggest the dipped cones. Try finding some place to park your car off street near by.

    (5)
  • Katie S.

Are you a chocolate lover? Nicollet Avenue Pot Hole (can't type this without craving it!) Fruity with a hint of chocolate lover? Raspberry Chocolate Chip. Now, go. Stop delaying. Get yourself one, big, delicious cone.

    (5)
  • Andrew H.

Not much else to add about this place from what everybody else has so judiciously written thus far but I'll try to add a little value with this review: I don't like that yelp only gives $ to this place because as far as ice cream goes it is expensive but I understand that dollar sign is because the goods are under $10, and i jolly well hope so for a scoop of ice cream. Anyways, just a heads up, the ice cream here is not cheap! But it is worth it! Seriously delicious. Try the hand dipped cones which will add to your bill even more but are soooooo good. Any flavor is a delight and the outside seating is just perfect in the summer. Hit this place up before or after a day trip to uptown and you won't be disappointed. But that line.....

    (4)
  • Susie A.

Salted caramel. Amazing! Can still taste it and wish I had more.... The mango sorbet was also a fruity hit! Love that they make it fresh daily. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the shop is strange. Two separate spaces connected by a hall with bathrooms. Not real appealing either, but with amazing ice cream like this, who cares. We sat outside and we will be back!

    (4)
  • Tian Q.

Flavors I LOVE (so far): caramel cashew, toasted coconut, mounds, nicollet pot hole. Things Sebastian Joe's needs to change: 1. the salty caramel flavor that tastes like incest-conceived vanilla, and 2. some staff scoopers who seem to be PMSing too hard.

  • Matt M.

GET IN MY BELLY. Sebastian Joe's is awesome. My family and I were having a big, long, intense discussion the other day... about the best ice cream in the Twin Cities. It got heated between Izzy's and Sebastian Joe's... but Sebastian Joe's edged out the competition. Why? Well, for one the location is bomb after a day on Calhoun or after a run around Lake of the Isles. The flavors are out of this world tasty, too. Their pavarotti ice cream is incredible-- bananas, chocolate chip, and peanut butter. I usually go for this, but this past weekend I went for the salted caramel. OHMAHGOD. Perfection. Raspberry chocolate chip, pumpkin, and cinnamon have all been good (the last two made my mom's homemade desserts even better. YUM). The serving size for a single scoop is perfect, too- places like Coldstone give you way too much.

Let me start off by saying that I've never been to Sebastian Joe's nor have I tasted their products. I've never even passed their storefront or had the opportunity to visit the great state of Minnesota. That being said, I have worked with them twice so far to help me organize ice cream parties for companies that I work with in the Minneapolis area. I was thoroughly impressed with them from the start. They were professional, reasonably priced and apparently loved by all. As if that wasn't enough, I was further impressed after our second event. The store manager, Zoltan, remembered me and was able to make extremely helpful suggestions for my second event. He pointed out things that people had requested the first time in addition to items that I may have ordered in excess during the previous party. This kind of attention to detail is very appreciated. It's efficient and necessary, especially when I am not there to see for myself. Also, the feedback I got from party guests was all positive. It seems like Sebastian Joe's is loved by one and all in the neighborhood. I look forward to working with them in the future for more long distance catering events. Keep up the good work!

I love Sebastian Joe's! Their ice cream is always so creamy and delicious, yum! I also love their selection of unique flavors, which rotate occasionally and vary by location (you can find a complete listing on their website). Trying to decide which flavor to go with is always a difficult decision; luckily they let you sample before you buy. If you're ever struggling, take a deep breath and just be aware that Oreo never disappoints! I'm not ashamed to admit that I squeal like a small child with delight whenever I uncover a huge chunk of Oreo. Seriously though, ditch Ben & Jerry's. Sebatian Joe's Pavarotti is way better than Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey. And the cold weather discount rocks - the colder is gets outside, the more you save. Only in Minnesota!

Although the ice cream is great, I have issues with the following items: 1. The line: I never know whether I am in line for a cup of coffee or an ice cream, and if I stand in what is perceived to be the non-ice cream line, it's nothing but dirty looks from the staff. I am happy to oblige to your business procedures, but I need to understand them. The dirty looks and body language certainly don't help, which feeds into issue two. 2. General attitude: I am your customer, I am here to purchase a good from you. Please refrain from acting like it's "putting you out" to sling my coffee. If you don't like your job, then get a new one. Don't take it out on the person that is your customer, who is friendly and wants to do business with you. The food and coffee are great, but service is the issue. More stars for the rating would be granted if I wouldn't be treated like a creep when I come in. This is only by a few of the staff members, the rest of them are fine.

One of the "sweetest" things my significant other has ever done for me was take me to Sebastian Joe's. It's a quaint, nice little joint with very friendly staff and a tremendous amount of flavors. I remember getting a chocolate toffee-flavor and it was to die for! I'm not generally large on ice cream nowadays (I prefer frozen yogurt), but this was wonderful and I'd certainly love to come back here when I'm in Minneapolis again.

This place used to be my favorite place to go for dessert. Recently, it has really sucked. Some of the people who work there are very rude, and the past two times I've gone they've given me really melted ice cream. Very disappointing. Although in the past, my favorite flavors have been Oreo and Nicolett Pot Hole. My friends tend towards the "Brrr Bars."

Salted caramel. No more needs to be said.

I'd been to SebJoe's many times for ice cream and loved every flavor (but I do have to say that Oreo cannot be beat!) BUT, just recently I have discovered Sebastian Joe's for breakfast. OH. WOW! It is quickly becoming a habit for me to stop every morning on my way to work for a latte and a muffin. Their pastries are DELICIOUS, and still warm in the morning! Their coffee is delicious and it's the same warm service you get when ordering ice cream after dinner. My personal favorite is the rotating fat-free bran muffin flavor of the day (pumpkin ginger? blackberry? triple berry? What could be better??)

  • Kristi C.

I would give this six stars if I could. Ice cream is by far my choice for a special treat, these guys do it right. It's so good I don't mind paying premium prices. My all time fave is the Raspberry Chocolate Chip. Peach for me this time, and I highly recommend it. YUM! I've also tried the Pavarotti, while I'm not a huge fan of any kind of banana ice cream, this was by far the best flavor combo in the banana genre.

Stopped by post Mexican food and the place was packed. Don't get discouraged by the line that wraps through the whole place; they have plenty of staff and you generally get served way before you make it to the counter. All the help are knowledgeable about the unique flavors and are more than willing to give you a sample of what you're interested in. I've had the Mint Patty before and that was great, real peppermint (not colored green!) and little mini York peppermint patty things, with crunch chocolate outside and mint creaminess inside! But tonight I tried the immaculate confection and WOW!!!! It was vanilla bean (with the vanilla specs) candied ginger, honey and candied pecans! Oh my god it was soooo good. I got a small scoop in a dish and it was a perfect amount if you're looking for a treat but not an over indulgence. My boyfriend tried the chocolate and the raspberry; the chocolate wasn't too sweet and it was a deep chocolate color. The raspberry had little chunks of chocolate in it and there was the tartness of the berries and even the seeds! (REAL FRUIT!) He had it in a hand dipped waffle cone which was pretty darn good too. I love that Sebastian's also has unique twists on traditional treats; they have frozen ice cream that they dip in chocolate (way better than a dilly bar) and homemade ice cream sandwiches with cookies and not just vanilla filling. Their list of Sunday's is long and luscious. They also serve coffee drinks and they roast their own beans in house which you can buy by the pound. Free internet and indoor/ outdoor seating. I always leave this place feeling like a kid but eating better than one, Sebastian crafts their ice creams with creativity that always keeps me coming back for more!

During my yelp searches before vacation I knew to find a great ice cream spot. We defiantly hit the jackpot with this place! The location is fantastic, the staff super friendly, the choice in flavors will keep you on your toes, and its obvious by the customers who come in that this place is well loved. We were only in Minneapolis for 4 days and we stopped here twice. It helps that hey are open late and have all the flavors available at 10 at night!

This place reminded me a little bit of Rick's Ice Cream in Palo Alto, CA. Its home-made ice cream is made in small batches, and you can taste the difference in its flavor and richness. They have real waffle cones and hand-dipped chocolate cones, which end up being a bit sticky. Then again, what's ice cream if it doesn't get a little sticky while you're eating it. The flavors looked like they change daily, but I got the french roast. It was delicious. Even if you get a small, it's pretty big in a waffle cone. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the ice cream that you get. I went to the state fair the next day and tried the honey-sunflower ice cream, and I liked this much better than that one.

I've been here many times, and I always love it. They have sorbets, too, which I adore (I grew up with a milk allergy so sorbets have a special place in my palate). The orange cranberry sorbet is so, so good, and raspberry chocolate chip is a perennial favorite. I like how in winter you get a discount based on how cold it is.

Um, I admit that I can't totally understand why people are so crazy about this place. I didn't see anything special... Don't know what makes it better than other places...

Great ice cream and great service. The ice cream is rich and creamy. My son has a peanut allergy. I asked the serve to use a new scooper, and he got ice cream from the freezer to reduce the chance of cross-contamination. We will be back :)

The layout is a bit funny as it took me a second to find out where I needed to go after walking in the door, but that's the only knock against this place. I was quick to order myself the Oreo Ice Cream and plop down into a leather chair near the front windows. The chair was "gently used" but comfortable, and the ice cream was fantastic. Most people came and went, but I lingered, which is easier to do when you get a cup rather than a cone. Even though it was drizzling outside, I was quite comfortable with my book and my ice cream. I never minded the rain in Seattle, why would I mind it here?

I'm sure I have nothing new to add that hasn't already been said. This ice cream is fantastic. It's a little pricy, but if you want cheap ice cream you should go to Cub and pick up a half gallon (ok, 1.5 quarts) of whatever is on sale that week. The oreo is my usual, but I've also had their balieys, cinnamon, and coffee, among others, and they're all fantastic. I'm told their coffee and baked goods are also good, but I'll never know I'm afraid, since year round I head straight for the ice cream.

Go here now. Order the Oreo ice cream. there is a reason Minnesotans will go here in negative temperatures for ice cream... it really is that good.; creative flavors, something for everyone! but really the Oreo is so amazing with whole oreos that take on a chewy texture in the ice cream I miss it so much! a seasonal favorite it the candy cane with big chunks of candy cane swirled with peppermint ice cream droool

If you can't find anything appealing about this place, then there is something incredibly wrong with you. The blueberry ice cream rules and the Oreo is probably my favorite ice cream of all time. This location is the best because they stay organized no matter how busy it gets (the other one is super tiny and set up badly so it's pretty much impossible to keep everyone straight.) I dare you to go to Sebastian Joe's and hate it. DOUBLE DARE YOU. You've already been here and don't like it? You have no soul. Good luck with that.

Hot night in the Twin Cities? No. Not THAT kinda night. I mean hot, like temperature! Sheesh! Anyways! As I was saying,...*ahem. Sometimes, a hot night in the Twin Cities calls for a cold treat. And if you are looking for a spot to do the job, Sebastian Joes is your ice cream oasis. Waiting in line seemed like we were trying to get into a hot night-club or waiting in line for a roller coster, so off the bat - you think, "Is this place good?" But the line moves along rather quickly, and before you know it...you're picking your flavors! Yum! For me, the white chocolate just did it! Its creamy, but not too rich. And if you put 2 scoops over a chocolate dipped cone, its OHSOGOOD! My girlfriend got the peach ice cream, which had a nice tart to it. As for my 2 other friends, the oreo was on the menu and it looked delicioso, too With so many flavors, no doubt you will see me here again! Picks*: White Chocolate, Oreo. 2 scoops. Chocolate dipped cone w/ almonds (because I am a nut!) . Recommend: Dining outside on a hot MN day/night. *note: ice cream flavors rotate periodically Day or night, you'll find Sebastian Joe's busy. So expect to wait some. But the efficacy of this quaint ice cream shop won't have you waiting too long. Besides, you're probably not going to wonder why the line is sooooo long. You'll probably be more anxious to get your ice-cold treat!

Loved the big portions at a reasonable price and the codffee shop feel with the big chairs to sit in. People watching in this place is almost worth the visit as the creamy varied flavors of ice cream. If you are looking for an ice cream shop with cult appeal, you can find it here at Sebastian Joes.

So far my favorite place for ice cream in the TC's. The service like most have said is not the best but then again, I don't expect to receive 5-star service at an ice cream shop anyway. The prices are a little bit steep but considering it is made fresh every single day and a local hot spot they can kind of capitalize on that and raise the prices a bit. The ice cream is great, it's always fresh, creamy, and rich in taste. Is it the best I've ever had? Nope! Is it super yummy though? Yep! the best in the Twin Cities? By far.

Soooo, if you're deciding whether or not to get the grapefruit sorbet - get it! If you don't like it, I give you full permission to blame me and come asking for a refund (but I already know that's not going to happen).

Is it lazy or succinct to sum up my review in one word? That word is: YUMMMM!!! I loved this place in the 90's and I was a little worried that I had built it up in my head over the years. Nope. Just as creamy, fresh, delicious and unique as I remembered. I am glad that it is a mile walk so I don't feel as guilty for going.

How have I not reviewed Sebastian Joe's??? Favorite thing? When the weather turns wicked, they give you a discount--the colder it gets the cheaper the ice cream... so on particularly harsh winter days, Sebastian Joe's a great way to perk up and remember that warmer weather will come again!

BEST Oreo ice cream ever. EVER. I have taken people here who haven't trusted me on this, and after I let them taste mine, they always wish they had gotten it. Do yourself a favor and get the Oreo. FYI, they will let you have as many little spoons to taste the flavors as you want. I used to mess around and try other things, but since I go so rarely, I just go for my fave when I'm there. I have gotten a stale cone on occasion, but they'll make you another one. Normally I'd dock a place a star for pulling something like that, but the ice cream is so good that I'm willing to forgive the occasional inconvenience. Once I have my ice cream, all is forgotten.

SJ's Oreo ice cream makes me wet myself it's so good -- or at least it used to be. Seems like they have changed the formulation or ingredients a bit because I am no longer incontinent when eating it. All of the ice cream flavors are very good - bordering on great - but not quite up to par with its competitors across the river, namely Grand Ole Creamery and Izzy's. I don't care for the location -- it's not really near anything I would normally find myself at, and the parking is not so good.

How could I have passed by Sebastian Joe's so many times and never tried them? Seriously, how now brown cow? I think it's coz I've never had to stop on Franklin and Hennepin. Well, today I finally made a point of getting my butt off the #6U and walking into this shop. The place is really spacious but comfy, with free wi-fi and two Macs for free browsing. It has that college-student-haunt feel to it. There were a lot of flavors ranging from the more pedestrian chocolate and cookies n' cream (although I'm sure it's anything but), to more unique ones like garlic almond (which tasted pretty interesting). I opted for a 6 oz (two scoops) cup of Pavarotti, which had banana, hazelnut, and something else, and pumpkin. The Pavarotti was very, very good, and you can probably break down the flavors in your palate if you tried. But the pumpkin was...oh my lord of the flies. It was perfect: the texture had a little bit of grittiness to it, but overall it was smooth, creamy, and just so yummy in my tummy. I was on my way to Lund's and after doing my groceries I was so tempted to go back for a to-go pint. But I didn't, but I probably should have. It's probably a good thing I don't live close to this place.

I can rant and rave all day about SJ's... but you truely have to just go there. they are open until 11 all week and 12 on fridays and saturdays... as a night person I love that.. their ice cream is, to say the least, life-changing. Toasted coconut, oreo, pavoratti... I actually just got back from there a couple minutes ago (my ice cream is long gone..) and I quite depressed that i didnt just get two cones. please, for happiness sake, go, ice cream conoissuers, go!

I hate this place, it sucks. Don't go here Then the line will be shorter when I go. The fact that I live within walking distance from this place will be very dangerous for my health.

I was so excited to go here after seeing Yelpers' amazing reviews on this place which seemed to put it above Izzy's. Admittedly, I walked into Joe's with out of the park expectations, which isn't fair in the first place, but I'll continue... Before going, I checked the website for the listing of flavors and was amped to see what was there that day- I got there and I was pretty disappointed at the selection.. Maybe it was an off day? I got the green tea with a waffle cone.. And honestly, I don't have many adjectives to describe my ice cream or the experience. The ice cream was.. meh. not memorable. The cone was... okay. After eating Izzy's I feel cheated here that I didn't get a free extra flavor on the top. OR that my waffle cone wasn't gigantic and super fresh with a malted milk ball at the end. My friends who were with me felt the same. They expressed that while the ice cream wasn't bad, it didn't live up to the hype.

  • Elizabeth B.

Wow. Fresh handmade ice cream and open till 11?!? This place is a gem! My hubby and I had chocolate pistachio and Nicolett pot hole sugar cones. Mine was a chocolate malt tasting ice cream with lots of whole pistachios, delicious and light. His was a rich dark chocolate ice cream with thick fudge swirled and chocolate candy cups, decadent. Get both flavors and share at one of the many nice outdoor tables on a warm summer evening. Don't let the line intimidate you- it moves very quickly, and allows you time to make the tough decision of which flavor to indulge in! Snag the first parking spot you see ;)

The other 7 reviews pretty much cover it, so I just wanted to add my 5 stars. So as not to be impolite, I'll add a Haiku review: Quaint little storefront Most unique homemade ice cream Internet to boot!

Best coffee I've had in the uptown area. Although it is $1.50 for a small now - is that normal? Try the hot cold press (or the cold cold press - I'm serious, you have to specify). They have some pretty interesting ice cream flavors, but then I am not that into ice cream. Plus it is $4. The space is decent, but there are not that many tables or outlets. They do have free wifi though.

    (4)
  • Andrew K.

The place was packed and had some good outdoor seating. I sampled the banana cream pie flavor and after not being super-impressed went with the banana froyo with some fresh blueberries on top. It was good, but far from soul-shaking.

At any of their locations - as good as ice cream gets around here. Rather than a using a calendar, the weather, or science, I'll know fall has arrived with Sebastian Joe's starts offering their pumpkin pie ice cream.

  • Evie Z.

The BEST cold treats in uptown! The homemade cones are worth ALL the calories and the extra time on the treadmill! The crazy flavors are good but my favorite by far is the Oreo. It is so popular that during the summer it is usually on the counter in multiple buckets because its sooooo popular. In the winter, they offer a percentage off depending on the temperature outside. Overall if you are looking for some GREAT freshly made ice cream this is the best spot in the twin cities. They also have a second location.

    (5)
  • Bryan M.

Best ice cream place in the world. Hands down. Their Oreo is in-freakin'-credible, as are their chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches.

  • Jessica E.

Ummmm...hells yeah! This place is quite the tasty treat to say the least. Homemade ice cream that's open late...even in the winter. I've been there several times and there's never a let down. We brought some friends from out of town there last night and out of the four of us no one had less than happy mouths and bellies. I hit up the Oreo Sundae - I think it was called a walking oreo? Either way - oreo ice cream, oreo crumbles, hot fudge, whipped cream. If that's not enough to bring you in, I don't know what is.

    (4)
  • Sara P.

Ice cream is my favorite food. Pavarotti is my favorite flavor and its only made here making this my all time fav place to get ice cream (in the twin cities at least) The staff is always smiling, the line goes quickly and the waffle cones are to die for. Bring your dog and sit outside!

  • Ariel K.

a hot humid night in Minneapolis calls for Sebastian Joes. Yeah the place is packed, and it should be. Its the best ice cream in the city. Yeah its over priced, but is that really going to stop you? Don't bother getting anything but the Oreo: grainy texture, gray coloring and real oreos (I''ve found a whole one in my cup!). Its like no other flavor.

  • Steph P.

For an unbelievably low price of $2.55, I get a single scoop of some of the best homemade (daily!) ice cream and sorbet I've had. Lots of unique flavors like the chocolatey Caramel Cashew, Mint Milano (mint with chunks of Milano cookies!), and the super bananaey Pavarotti (RIP man). I love their ice cream because it isn't so creamy that I feel like I am going to die from lactardedness. Only very minor complaint: why don't you have cake cones? They're my favorite. It's alright because they've got sugar cones and a selection of various hand-dipped, homemade waffle cones. You can also get ice cream sandwiches, and this dipped ice cream pop thing...seriously, I am going to get so freakin' fat with this place just a few blocks away from me. They also have coffee, tea, baked goods, and the usual stuff for a cafe. They even have board games behind the counter! There's plenty of seating good for singles, couples, small groups, and large groups. And two Macs set up for FREE internet usage (15 min limit, don't be an asshole). But more importantly, $2.55 supplies me with a fix for my severe addictions when my internet is on the fritz (YES there is free wi-fi, but there aren't any stickers in the window indicating so). The layout of this ice cream cafe is freakin' amazing because the main seating area is huge and far away from the register (imagine two parts to the cafe connected in the middle by a corridor). That means that I can go on for hours and hours, slouched in the corner in this super comfortable leather chair, eyes glazed over and staring at my screen...away from the potentially glaring eyes of the staff. And if they ever do realize that I am going on Hour 3 and start to get annoyed, I say, "I gave your place 5 stars, don't judge me!"

Simply the greatest ice cream my family and I have ever tasted, and the chocolate heath covered waffle cone is second to none. We will always make this one of our must have stops when in Minnesota!!!

  • David R.

Greatest ice cream in the Twin Cities-- and I'd like to think that statement means something coming from a former disciple of Izzy's. You really can't go wrong with any selections here but one of their flavors, some sort of spicy chocolate (has the word coyote in the name I believe) is ridiculously exceptional. Also, stick with the ice cream people; I can never figure out what the appeal of a sundae is when the base ingredient is so delicious--doesn't all that fudge and chocolate just mar the flavor of the ice cream? The lines are long. The service is sort-of iffy (but really, if you had to scoop ice cream out of a freezing container all night for minimum wage, how cheerful would you be?). BUT, the ice cream is so so worth it. Go, and if you're down by Minnehaha Falls remember that Sea Salt also serves Sebastian Joe's (and usually have a better selection than the main location in uptown).

Had the privilege to stop in here and have some ice cream when I was here visiting my brother last summer and boy am I glad I did. It was awesome. There was 9 of us in our party and even though it's a small place, there was plenty of room for all of us. We each ordered something different so we could taste many purchases and Sebastian Joe's DID NOT disappoint! It was all delicious and creamy straight down to the last bite. Don't be surprised if you have to wait in a line, but it goes pretty fast. Thank you Sebastian Joe's for helping make my first visit to Minneapolis a very enjoyable one!

I normally have a great experience when I come for a scoop, but not tonight. The longer curly haired woman and man were not very friendly. It might have been just a bad day or a long night, but i asked for a sample twice, and was ignored, twice. Then the lady looked beyond me to the next set of customers. I finally said, I would like something. Rather than the man acknowledging me, when I asked for a sample, he simply handed me the sample. I didn't even know he heard me ask the first two times. The ice cream was great, but the service was less then desirable.

If Sebastian Joe's was was in San Francisco or New York, I'm convinced it'd be on every "Best Ice Cream Shops in America" list ever. As a California native, I've yet to find a place that captures my heart and my tastebuds like this place (outside of Italian-as-in-actually-in-Italy gelattarias). Their flavors are mostly relatively safe (nothing WAY out there like bacon), with a couple creative ones like Chocolate Coyote (chocolate with cayenne pepper and cinnamon). Their texture is just spot on. That perfect mix between firm and soft, just great mouth feel on everything. And it's consistent between flavors. Favorite flavors: Nicollet pot hole (chocolate ice cream w/ fudge, truffles, heat bar & sea salt), banana, salted caramel, strawberry rhubarb, Pavarotti (Caramel, bananas, and chocolate chips), and Chocolate Coyote (Chocolate ice cream, cinnamon and cayenne pepper). If I had to pick just one, I'm not eve sure which I'd go with. Probably Pavarotti on days when I just want what's comfortable and familiar and the Coyote when I want a kick. They rotate flavors out on a daily basis and there's plenty I've not had the pleasure of even sampling yet. Their sorbets are a little eh. In my limited experience, Krema seemed to be better for that. A little pricy (even for someone who's used to paying San Francisco prices), but well-worth it. I've never come here and thought to myself, "Damn, I should have spent those $6 on something other than delicious ice cream."

Very friendly staff and lots of flavors. The ice cream was okay but the waffle come was very chewy and almost stale. I liked the flavors but I don't think I will go back again.

My god I love this place, and I don't really even like ice cream, that much! Does it get much better than fresh, home made (at least locally made) ice cream even in the dead of winter. This was the treat after skating on Lake of the Isles with my daughter. I had the sea salt caramel and oh my god was it tasty. I know the salty sweet is the new chocolate trend but in ice cream this was so much better than I was expecting. Now I think my daughter had some sort of double chocolate ice cream. I say "I think" because there was no way she was going to let me try it! Such a nice little addition to a great day. This is the kind of place that helps makes memories! KT

I love this place and go quite often. Their flavors are so innovative. Last time I went they had a Surly ice cream. It was brilliant. They staff is fun and friendly. They move that huge intimidating line so quickly. It's like you barely waited. Everything is home made. My wife is dairy free and they have some killer sorbets! Incredible flavors across the board.

  • Taylor K.

This ice cream was absolutely delicious and the prices were surprisingly cheap. I had Chocolate Coyote (chocolate, cinnamon, cayenne pepper) which was probably some of the best ice cream I've ever had. The line was the longest I've ever seen at an ice cream shop, but moved quickly and was well worth it. The vibe was laidback and there was plenty of seating, though we sat outside because it was a beautiful summer night. I will definitely be back to try more!

  • Angie S.

This place is always my first thought when I am in the mood for ice cream. This particular visit was one of the 90 degree and humid days, leaving my brain just screaming for a cool down. The line always seems long, but it does move quickly with the attentive staff. The staff was helpful with reassuring my cousin of what he could eat with all of his food allergies. He went for the apple pie and I always seem to go for the classic cinnamon flavor in a dish. It's like none of the fancy mixtures and crazy names cannot sway me from the basic cinnamon. Def try to find a spot to eat outside with all the locals, enjoying the weather and cityscape!

  • Heather S.

Best ice cream I've had! The creamy ice cream was rich without being too heavy and had just the right amount of stuff mixed in. Love it.

    (5)
  • Jeremy D.

The raspberry chocolate chip ice cream here is a TOTAL WIN! While the place is a little too hipster for my surly tastes, the ice cream MORE than makes up for it. Prices are decent, parking is a female dog and the ice cream is worth looking at people wearing black rimmed glasses, scarves in the summer and listening about them talk about how cool things were before everybody knew about them. All in all, stop by here and have a cone. You will be glad you did.

    (5)
  • Emma O.

Oh, wow. Immaculate Confection was some of the richest ice cream I have ever had. Ginger, Apple Strudel, and French Vanilla. An incredible combination. Can't wait to go back and try more of their homemade flavors.

  • Alison M.

This is one good ice cream shop that has the ambiance to match. I'm a fan of the Pavarotti ice cream (also eaten at the Sea Salt at Minnehaha Falls), the inside coffee shop and the outside seating. It's just a nice place to go if you are nearby. In a contest between here and Izzy's assembly-line, Sebastian Joe's wins hands-down.

    (4)
  • Jen B.

My favorite ice cream of all time, beating out even Chocolate Shoppe in Madison. I could eat their Oreo ice cream every day of my life. I don't understand people knocking this place for the long lines. Duh, it's going to be busy. When it's hot out, errybody wants that sweet creamy goodness, and this place is the best. You want short lines, go to a place that sucks.

    (5)
  • Nick L.

While I prefer Grand Ole Creamery, I do like Sebastian Joe's. I live a little over a mile away, but the walk seems so short after I enjoy their delicious ice cream. They have a good deal in the winter involving discounts with every so many degrees it's below freezing. People! Ice cream is just as delicious in the freezing cold as it is in the sweltering heat

I would totally give this place 5 stars, simply because the ice cream is delicious, and perfect for those hot summer days. But seriously, this place is always packed, and I hate waiting in a line when I am hot and sticky with others who feel the same way. Other than that downfall, this place is topnotch!

  • Jordan S.

I think that the ice cream is just ok, and the prices are way too high. Even though there are plenty of flavor options, I have yet to find one that I absolutely love. It has a nice patio to eat your ice cream on a nice summer night and there is plenty of street parking. The prices are way too high for the quality of the ice cream. I recommend trying to find somewhere else to get your ice cream.

Don't go here watching your calorie intake. They have different flavors everyday and they are homemade. Its like Ben & Jerry's but on another level. I've had many different flavors but some of the best were Egg Nog & Apple Crisp. Prices aren't bad for what you get but expect to pay about 4-5$ a person if you are getting more than one scoop.

yum. sebastian joe's is so great. i absolutely love the creativity found in the flavors here. you never really know what you're going to be offered...that's fun for me! my automatic go-to is always the ever-famous nicollet pot hole. it's outstanding. the chocolate. the sea salt. the brownie chunks...oh my word. if you go JUST to try that, your trip will be worth it. i love sebastian joe's! last night i got the watermelon sorbet and i'm kicking myself for not knowing that it existed all summer long. it's the perfect summer flavor. as an ice cream fanatic, i recommend sebastian joe's very highly!

After waiting about 15 minutes in line I finally arrived at the counter excited to look at the variety of ice cream to choose from. After much contemplation I went with the black forest ice cream with a chocolate dipped waffle cone. The black forest ice cream had chunks of cherries and chocolate which was pretty darn good. They gave me a massive scoop on top of my cone. The cone was good but large. After eating a little over half of it, I decided the chocolate on the cone was too much. Next time I will get a regular one. Prices are fair too!

raspberry chocolate chip + pavarotti = heaven in my mouth let me elaborate....the raspberry chocolate chip is insanely good. tart raspberry (with seeds!) and dark chocolate chip/chunks/shavings make this ice cream perfection. pavarotti is some sort of banana, caramel, dark chocolate chip/chunks/shavings and oh-my....it's fantastic! what else can i say....they have a danza di limone creation that's lemony ice-cream with almond chunks. everything rocks. just go! and check out Patina next door!

This is the other best creamery/ice cream joint in the Twin Cities. Grand Olde Creamery on, you guessed it, Grand Avenue is quite a hike from Hennepin Ave. Since this is fun and might be a nice conclusion after a scenic/romantic walk around a lake, it's a popular place.

This is it, people. This is the best Oreo ice cream you'll ever have. Gray and chunky, with a grainy texture that takes the piss out of any boring cookies n'cream pint you could pick up the grocery store. As for the other flavors, well...I can't speak from experience. My mom likes their pistachio?

Delicious! I have been to the other location and loved it just as much. This one has more flavors. It was super packed on a Sunday night, but the service was prompt. I highly recommend the raspberry chocolate chip.

It's not a secret that I love ice cream - pretty much any flavor, too - so I'm not surprised that I loved this place. I went with a friend who told me that Sebastian Joe's has the best Oreo ice cream he has ever eaten. We got a pint to go and sampled some other flavors in the shop. The oreo seriously blew my mind - the texture was perfect and the oreos were distributed really well throughout the pint (the cookie part was incorporated into the vanilla base - not just vanilla ice cream with chunks of oreo, people!!). We tasted the coffee/banana and that was sort of icky, so I'm going with 4-4.5 stars here in case the other flaves aren't awesome - but get your oreo on here!

Driving to Uptown sucks. Getting around Uptown sucks. We know this. But the ice cream at SJ's is worth it. And I think it's cheaper for a single cone versus Izzy's or Grand Ole Creamery.

My 5th grade teacher's husband owns this place. She would bring us ice cream and it was the best. They have a nice area to eat outside and it is in once of the greatest areas of Mpls. Don't be surprised if they have lines on a hot day or night.

Since ice cream is one of my favorite foods I have to give props to Sebastian Joes! The flavors are amazing, as is the cone selection (chocolate candy dipped waffle cone anyone?), but I couldn't give the place 5 stars....because for me, the ice cream has an odd syrupy thickness that I can't put my finger on. But, I have NEVER turned done a frozen treat from Sebastian Joes, and I don't plan on starting now!

As thoughts of summer set in, I can't help but dream of Sebastian Joe's. OK, I like this place any time of year, but especially on a hot summer's night. Raspberry chocolate chip has always been my #1-favorite. What a sweet, sweet combination. Tart raspberry ice cream with small chunks of bittersweet chocolate. Ice cream really doesn't get any better than this. Runner-up in my book is the Pavorotti, a heavenly blend of caramel, banana, and chocolate chips. So, so good. If I opt for a double scoop, these are usually the two that make it into my cone or cup. Expect a line on a hot summer evening, but that's part of the whole experience. Or stop by during quieter times. I've enjoyed taking my laptop or a good book, and being more leisurely with my ice cream and a superb cup of coffee. This season I vow to expand my horizons and sample more flavors. I know from experience, though, that I always gravitate back to my two old favorites.

The Oreo Ice Cream is DELICIOUS!!! Very creamy. They offered probably about 20 flavors of ice cream some common and others I have never seen or tried before. There was also several varieties of malts as well as an assortment of baked goods. I ordered a 6 oz handdipped health bar ice cream cone with oreo and pavoratii ice cream. Both were very good! My husband ordered an after dinner mint malt. I tried some of the malt and it was good just a little different than what I am used to. The malt was seltzer water, flavoriing and one scoop of ice cream in a cup. There was seating inside and out and they had 2 apple computers to surf the internet. I can't see myself going back here simply because I live on the other side of the city but if I was ever in the area again I would stop by.

A few years ago I would have given this place at least four stars. Something has happened since, what a shame. Excluding ice cream the rest of this review is about coffee and solid food. The pastries used to be something special. Now they are average and there is less variety than in the past. Sandwiches: The sandwiches are made elsewhere and the last two visits I found them on the stale side with dry bread. The staff: Used to be fun and interesting and seem to enjoy seeing their patrons. Now, some still smile, but a man seemed to be ragging on a young woman trying to do her job and I didn't see what she was doing wrong. Nothing adds a more negative tone to a place than seeing staff not getting along in front of customers. Don't try to figure out whom, as I have been here at different times of the day including weekends and weekdays and there only seems to be one pleasant barista.

i'm not even sure what the point of reviewing sj's is-- if you're checking the reviews.. STOP IT! get your tushy over there!! :) PRO'S: hands down my favorite ice cream... EVER. CON'S: almost always a line-- even in the winter, but trust me it is SO WORTH IT! the only actual con I have is that I hate that they don't push the ice cream down in the cone for you-- my biggest pet peeve at ice cream places. TIP: OREO-- is thee best! if you're not eating the chilly goodness at SJ's get a pint or quart to go-- much better value and you can enjoy a lot more for a lot longer! they also have great coffee and great ice cream cakes.

The workers here are well trained machines that pump out ice cream to the masses. The ice cream is good but if you want to switch it up try a float. I like the chocolate mint one.

I can see why this is the psychological spot in Uptown. I had a single chocolate cone. It was pretty damn soft and runny, and it hasn't been blistering hot. It's a very dark, almost dense chocolate. I was actually more impressed with the homemade cone, and I usually don't like that type.I may go the sorbet route, like Jess. The young male server was great and so helpful.

I scream, we all scream for Sebastian Joes. I am a lover of ice cream, and was very glad my coworker encouraged me to try SJoes. Note: There will be a line at most times, but worth the wait. Try any of the 20 or so flavors and you will be happy. We tried Heath and Vanilla Orangina and Choc Banana and all were quite amazing. Definitely worth the splurge.

Have been coming to this place for years and have never been disappointed. Fun, but not wacky, handcrafted flavors with super speedy service. Our most recent visit was on an unbelievably warm Friday night in March and when we arrived at 9:30 p.m. there were easily 100 people in line with the same idea. The 5 folks behind the counter were really hustling and our wait was only about 15 minutes. A+ for service. A++ for high quality, tasty ice cream.

Sebastian Joe's is one of the "Big 3" when it comes to local, Twin Cities ice cream. For me, personally, it isn't at the level of Izzy's or Grand Ole Creamery, but it still is tasty ice cream. We are definitely spoiled but the fresh, local ice cream options we have here. The fact that people debate which is best proves how fortunate we are here in the metro area. Sebastian Joe's has two locations... One in Uptown and another in the Linden Hills area. In my opinion the Uptown location is much livelier, and it also has an incredible line. You see lines Izzy's that extend down Marshall, and you definitely can be standing outside awhile at Grand Ole Creamery... But the lines at Sebastian Joe's can be pretty crazy even late at night. The last time I went it was around 10pm and there were probably 50 people ahead of me. The fact that you can get ice cream as late as midnight, though, is pretty special. Parking... Well, parking is a beast. It's possible to drive around awhile before finding a spot unless you want to hoof it a few bocks or test out your parallel parking skills (not something I enjoy). My recommendation would be to go during the day on a weekday to avoid some of that nonsense, but I understand that's not an option for everyone. The ice cream is tasty. It's made fresh daily and like other local ice cream shops they have a wide variety of flavors which change regularly. The basil vanilla is a nice twist on a common favorite, and I did like the Nicollet pothole which is quite similar to the Northwoods crunch at GOC--great for any chocolate lover. They offer green tea which always impresses me as it was one of my favorites when I was living in Japan, and I heard rumblings about how good the raspberry chocolate chip was (yet to try it). Overall, another great example of local, Twin Cities ice cream. Cant really go wrong at Sebastian Joe's. It is clearly above the level of places like Cold Stone. But personally, I still prefer Grand Ole Creamery and the ultimate... Izzy's. Pros: Tasty/local ice cream, two locations, lively Uptown area or more laid back Linden Hills, open as late as midnight during the summer, variety of flavors, free wifi (supposedly) Cons: Parking is a beast, lines can get ridiculous, it can get pricey depending what/how much you order, outdoor seating is limited

While visiting a friend in Minnesota, we stopped in this local hot spot (which I love)...to get ice cream. After walking around the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden for a solid 2+ hours...ice cream sounded perfect. Not being from around there, and wanting to make this experience a good one, I asked one of the workers, an older gentleman, what his favorite was or to recommend something. I told him that I've never been in before and I wanted some guidance. Maybe it was because he was at the end of his shift or he was having a bad day, but he curtly replied that everything was good and more or less rolled his eyes. He then proceeded to help another customer. Taken aback, I resigned to picking flavors on my own. Pumpkin ice cream, on a cool fall day...perfect. The ice cream was great, why I get sugar cones, I'll never know...I want more ice cream! So the ice cream was a solid four to five stars But the customer service could have used some work...I'm not from around here, cut me a break!

I love Sebastian Joe's! Best ice cream in Minneapolis! SJ's always have a great selection of delicious and creatively named flavors. You can taste as many as you like before committing, though you really can't go wrong. The Oreo is always a great choice and in my many visits, has never been unavailable. The cold winter months bring a hilarious and fantastic discount, the colder it gets outside the higher discount you receive. Oh, Minnesota. Hint: Make sure to have some quarters on you and check out the Boxy Mouse button machine in the back!

This place is the best!!! It's a small, family-owned, friendly ice cream shop in the cute neighborhood of Linden Hills. They make the best ice cream--I've only had their oreo ice cream recently because I fell in love with it and haven't since been able to order anything else, but everyone raves about all their other flavors. It's reasonably priced, especially for the quality (and quantity) of ice cream you get. It's also the perfect place to go on summer nights. Just spend a while sitting on their patio under the colorful string lights eating the most delicious ice cream with friends or family. They also offer pints of their ice cream. I've ordered their ice cream, as well as their brr bars, and they're very good about getting things done for their customers. Their facebook page is also really fun to look at every once in a while because they like to interact with their customers and make friendly posts that brighten everyone's day. I know some people say that Izzy's is just the best ice cream shop, so I intend to go there solely to compare it to Sebastian Joe's. But I can't imagine that you could get a more fun experience anywhere else. Will always be a loyal SJ customer!

I always have a good experience when I go to Sebastian Joe's. Food: I always try to sample one of the stranger flavors they have, but I almost always go with pavarrati or oreo, the ice cream has good texture and consistency as well as great flavor. Service: service is good every employee I've encountered so far is helpful and seems happy to be there. Atmosphere: Nice little spot in uptown with fun local artwork on the walls. They also have a nice little section of outside seating.

When I've got a craving, I'll eat that certain food item morning, noon and night until I'm sick. Right now, that craving is for ice cream, milkshakes and malts. So when my coworker Annie D - yes, THE Annie D of Yelp MSP - picked me up for dinner, I informed her of my "must have" before taking me back to the hotel. She had only one suggestion: Sebastian Joe's. Apparently, this place offers the best Oreo cookies and cream - amongst other varieties - all made in house. Sold, m'dear. We walk in, and suddenly I'm a giddy little chubster. I try the cinnamon, the pumpkin and the Oreo. Tempted to try them all, I opt for the three that I tried, but certain that three scoops is far too many. "Can I get half scoops?" Technically, no, but the kind ice cream parlor chick did it for me anyway. However, my guess is that she sensed the excitement from my inner fat girl, and gave me three heaping scoops instead... at that cost of just two. I've got a slight tummy ache now, but well worth it.

Five for product. One for morons. Embarrassingly, I was the Duke of this joint. Sebastian Joes ice-cream is truly delicious. It's why people stand in line drooling in anticipation. My family and friends enjoyed it immensely until the other night. I'd always let the attitude of the wankers that serve you slide in lieu of the great product. But the other night, to be perfectly frank, I almost blew my cool. My eight year old son is at that interesting stage where "I'm just game enough to go and be served at the counter myself" , and after a little father son banter, he went to stand inside on his own to get our ice-cream as a treat on our evening ride. The minutes ticked over as he waited and when he finally got to the counter, money in hand, in clear sight of the beanie-clad server, the ignoramus looked at him, and moved to serve the adult next in line. In tears, my son left the store. Quickly letting me know that we're never buying ice-cream from Sebastian Jerks again and I am telling all my friends at school. What a shame. To Joe's owner/s - there is no excuse for this kind of poor service. I tell everyone to head to Yoghurt Lab.

Sebastian Joe's is the best ice cream I've ever had. I'm not even talkin' the fancy flavors... Their Oreo ice cream is where it's at! Although I've had other flavors that are fantastic, I'm always a sucker for ANY Oreo ice cream, and Sebastian Joe's is the.best .ever. I've had ice cream around the country at some of the so-called "best" places, but I still haven't found anything that tops this place. The service is pretty quick and curt. I understand the line is suuuper long (and with good reason), but it wouldn't kill you to at least seem slightly friendly. No one has been downright rude, though. MMMmm I can't wait until it's warm outside again so I can walk down to SJ's and get a HUGE waffle cone.

I had a scoop of capuccino ice cream in a waffle cone dipped in chocolate. I thought every component was way too sweet. I don't particularly mind ice cream that's too sweet, but it's the cone that gets to me. The waffle cone was practically made of sugar and it had a plastic taste to it. The sit-down room in the back was cozy. Someone next to us had his headphones in and was reading a newspaper. It was a cold day out, but the store was filled with people. This place seems like a good hang-out location, but I'm not sure I'd get ice cream for myself if I come back.

Here are four words I never thought I'd string together, especially when referring to ice cream: Roasted Garlic Almond Chip We ended up Sebastian Joe's, after an enthusiastic recommendation from a friend. I thought about bagging the short walk over from the Sculpture Garden, but since it was perfect ice cream weather (you know - windy, cool, and rainy), we decided to chance it. Initially, nothing jumped out at me as I perused the day's flavors of ice cream, yogurt and sorbet. That is until I saw those four little words, Roasted Garlic Almond Chip. It wasn't the only inventive flavor on the menu, but being a sucker for garlic, I knew I couldn't leave without at least a sample. I wasn't sure how they'd pull it off; honestly, I figured I'd taste it, make a face, and get something else. I'm still not sure *how* they did it, but frankly I don't care - all it took was a sample to know they did. Armed with a generous scoops and homemade waffle cones, we settled into a couple of the comfy chairs in back to devour our ice cream. I have a pretty high tolerance for garlic; so, while I found my ice cream delectable, I didn't find it oozing with garlic flavor. My friend, on the other hand, did pick up on the garlic notes. If you like ice cream, I would consider putting this on your Minneapolis bucket list; it's pretty fantastic.

In the ensuing years since my initial review, I learned that I am lactose intolerant. Fortunately for those of us in this fair city who cannot handle their dairy, Sebastian Joe's makes sorbet. Delicious sorbet. That you can also eat in a chocolate dipped waffle cone. A few months ago, I introduced the boyf to the wonder that is Sebastian Joe's Ice Cream. We live in NE, and he is never shy to admit that he wants to make the drive to Hennepin and Franklin for a double scoop of Nicollet Pothole. I'm glad that the fine folks at Sebastian Joe's are willing to provide samples. A small spoonful of raspberry chocolate chip won't kill me, but an entire cone would. Two enthusiastic thumbs up for their cold winter discount, too - the colder it gets outside, the more you save on their tasty ice cream!

You can't go wrong with ice cream, unless you're lactose-intolerant or diabetic or both. Seb Joe's rekindled my love for ice cream after I burned out on bottom-shelf stuff from the grocer's because I didn't know any better. Even though the prices still seem like a lot to me, I always leave feeling satisfied with their high-quality goods. I never get the same flavor since I don't go too often. The lines may be long, but the staff is pretty efficient and quick.

I now know what all the hype is about. It's embarrassing that I've lived in the Twin Cities for 6 years and have only tried their ice cream as of yesterday. Sebastian Joe's has a long list of flavors including the basics and some really interesting ones as well (garlic + chocolate ice cream?!?) I like that they quickly offer you generous samples when it's clear you're overwhelmed with options. The ice cream is smooth and creamy. It's not too hard or full of ice crystals. The flavors are sophisticated and not overly sweet or fake. They had a lot of fun, homemade waffle cone options and lots of outdoor seating. There's really nothing not to like about this place.

Yum! That's really all I need to say. I got a cup with 2 scoops (salted caramel and the kind named after a pothole). OMG the second flavor was so amazing! The salted caramel was really good too.

Having Sebastian in the name, I walk in half expecting someone in a crab suit to bust out in song.. "Unda da snow, unda da snow, down where it's colda, ice cream is betta, take it from meee!" Little Mermaid was my favorite Disney movie growing up. So what if it's below freezing outside? I HAD to get my ice cream fix. My friends all know that I love my ice cream. It's the one thing I have to get in every place I visit is. If I'm gonna move somewhere, a must is a good ice cream place and Minneapolis sure does. This is a bold statement for me to say: Sebastian Joe's is the best. ice cream. I. have. ever. had. And for a cherry on top, as a marketing major, I can appreciate cute marketing. Sebastian Joe's offers discounts on ice cream based on how cold it is outside. Big Bark (White Chocolate with Almonds), Oreo, Angelica (Hazelnut Coffee) are all orgasmically amazing. The texture of the ice cream is so creamy and the flavors are very good. Despite the fact that I was layered up like a mad person, came back to Texas with a cold after two days in Minneapolis, having ice cream from Sebastian Joe's make it all worth the sniffles.

Fantastic ice cream shop. The staff is friendly and nice, and the ice cream is out of this world! The folks that I was with and I shared several flavors (raspberry choco chip, green tea, and garlic and almond ice cream) and all of them were fantastic. I would've picked the garlic over the green tea, though, but the green tea flavoring was nice, not too sweet, and not overpowering. A great experience!

I've heard all the great reviews about Sebastian Joe's, and I've driven past it a million times but I never made the effort to swing around the block and go in. Boy was that a mistake! The ice cream here is amazing! In my defense, I don't usually think about ice cream much until summer time, but now that summer is in full swing, there's no excuse not to sample the amazingly creamy, delicious treats available by the cone-ful. You don't get hit over the head with waffle-cone vanilla when you walk in, which at first was a disappointment compared to the heady aroma outside Grande Old Creamery. Don't let that deceive you, though, as homemade cones are easily within reach (and it won't break the bank to upgrade from the simple sugar cone, either, just 70¢ more). We got the Pavarotti, a blend of banana, caramel and chocolate chips. This is the best tasting banana dessert I have ever had. It reminded me of my mom's banana bread, but distilled down to it's purest essence. It's amazing! I also liked they don't freeze their ice cream til it's solid, but keep it at just the right temperature so it's soft but doesn't run down your hand in 2 seconds (I'll let you know if that statement holds up in August!). Once the very nice girl had finished plying us with samples and scooped us a heaping homemade cone of the Pavoratti, I was devastated to see in the next case a bucket of ice cream studded with Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies. How could I have overlooked those beautiful golden, minty delights? Well, I know I won't be able to stay away for very long. Darn you Sebastian Joe's!!

Good creamy ice cream and a nice selection of flavors. My selection was Oreo and Cocunut something... Both were very yummy. However, they were so creamy and soft that I ended up gobbling down my medium in just a few short minutes. The line here can get disgustingly long and I'm not convinced it's worth the wait.

Finally got a chance to try this place tonight.....The ice cream was good, not as creamy and decadent as some others (Izzy's) but very good. I, unlike other yelpers, actually liked the cones. I had Swiss chocolate almond ice cream in a chocolate dipped cone. The cone wasn't fresh off the waffle iron but it was homemade and hand dipped in chocolate. I liked the large interior space with comfy chairs, its got a real coffee shop type of feel. The crowd was diverse and it is interesting people watching. Why the three stars? I think the ice cream servers could be a little more friendly. A "hello" or "would you like to taste any samples" instead of complete silence might be a nice touch and worthy of an additional star. We will be back.

I had been to Sebastian Joe's on several occasions but due to the unbearably long lines, my attitude was always "what ice cream could be worth waiting *this* long?" Last night, the answer became clear: A life without Nicollet Pot Hole is not a life worth living. Not to be confused with *a* Nicollet pot hole, which the world could do without, Sebastian Joe's version is a soft, creamy blend of chocolate ice cream with fudge, truffles, heath bar & sea salt. I piled this on top of a chocolate-dipped sugar cone with heath bar crunchies and proceeded to enter the gates of heaven. Music sounded, angels sang, and from my mouth shot golden flecks of love. Life will never be the same.

Sebastian Joe's has ice cream worth busting your diet wide-open. Personally, I consider the Danish Nut Roll ice cream technical breakfast food. Come on! It tastes like pastry in the mouth! Don't judge me. I haven't had a flavor that I didn't like (well, I haven't tried the straight-up chocolate and vanilla... because, while I'm sure they're delicious, how can you pass up things like sea salt caramel and Danish nut roll and raspberry chocolate chip?). It's creamy and delicious and tastes worth every little (big) calorie. My strategy is to get a single scoop, ask for a tasting spoon (tiny spoon=takes longer to eat...and who doesn't love a tiny spoon? They're always friendly and indulgent when I ask), and start walking toward Lake of the Isles (which is straight down the road). The line may be long, but the service is great (they let you taste! They do! And they don't even sneer!) and they offer cold-weather discounts in the winter. The coffee is also decent. My favorite thing used to be getting up early on a summer Sunday morning, getting a coffee and a scoop of ice cream and reading the Sunday morning paper at the outdoor tables. Come to think of it, why don't I do that anymore? Oh yeah. Adult metabolism kicking in. Right.

There was a time when I didn't have air conditioning in my apartment and to seek refuge I would bike to Sebastian Joe's for Salted Caramel ice cream and free Wi-Fi. Their flavors are really unique, but you can't go wrong with a classic Oreo cookies n' cream. I would recommend getting at least two scoops of two different flavors (again Oreo and Salted Caramel, need I say more?) The only drawbacks are long lines (make sure you know what flavors you want to taste before getting help) and limited seating , which is expected on busy summer days. Another helpful tip, grab your wallet out BEFORE you're handed your ice cream. It makes paying easier.

I recently made a trip to Minneapolis, and my friend took me here for ice cream. The shop itself is very endearing with a lovely seating area both inside and out. How have I never reviewed this place? So many memories, so many summer evenings, so many Christmas nights with my pints of mint Oreo cookie (spearmint, not overbearing peppermint). Joe's puts all other ice cream shops to shame. And I hear people compare it to Grand Ol' Creamery or Izzy's, but this is completely different. This isn't old fashioned churn style, which is good in its own sense. It is beat and whipped into submission to the point that is resembles gelato. There are a few go-to flavors for me. I can't get enough of the mint Oreo, or regular Oreo. Another is something-or-other coyote with a hint of cayenne. I've tried at least a dozen flavors and haven't been disappointed. My most recent discovery was Nicolette Ave Pothole. I was expecting the Twin Cities' version of Rocky Road, which might only be different in its name. How could I have doubted the power of SJ's? They have better things to do than make an imitation, they make an original - chocolate fudge, Heath bar and sea salt. Oh my!

I have been going to Sebastian Joe's since a young child and have clearly never gotten over it. Their ice cream is the absolute best around and their coffee and espresso is to die for. I am not sure about the other locations but this one has their own coffee bean roaster and the place always smells delicious. The best part about Sebastian Joe's is their wide variety of unique flavors of ice cream. They also have plenty of seasonal flavors such as apple crisp in the fall, eggnog in the winter, and tangy lemonade in the summer. My favorite flavor was one of "Michael's Mixes" which was half strawberry and half chai, so addicting. If you are looking for a nice place to sit for a treat or some coffee Sebastian Joe's is perfect. The only thing is it is ALWAYS busy. I live about a block away and everytime I drive or walk by, no matter what time it is or what time of year, there is almost always a line. In my opinion though, its worth the wait.

The flavors and freshness are awesome. Raspberry chocolate chip is worth the drive alone! The hand dipped waffle cones with chocolate and nuts are good enough to eat without even putting ice cream in them. You can buy their ice cream to go at area Pizza Luce Restaurants....they sell either pints, or quarts...not sure which!

It comes down to one thing: texture. Three is this elasticity to Sebatian Joe's that no one else can match. Best ice cream in town, hands down.

I live about 30 seconds from Sebastian Joe's. Well, for the next 30 days I do... and you better believe I'm going to make the most of that and probably end up weighing an extra 30 lbs at the end of the month. Worth it! Cookies 'n' cream? Eff that noise. Sebastian Joe's Oreo ice cream will make you shun plain old cookies 'n' cream for the rest of your ever-loving days. It'll never be good enough for you once you have a taste of SJ's. It's made with super-rich ice cream in a flavor that tastes like Oreo cream to me. And monster chunks of Oreo cookies... not just the cookie dust, like some other places. I couldn't stop at Oreo, so while I was paying I decided to spring for a pint of creme freche ice cream to go with the blueberries I had at home. The slightly tangy taste of that flavor reminded me of that Izzy's buttermilk ice cream of yore... and that creme freche ice cream was glorious with or without the blueberries! Another thing I love about this place is that it's a real destination. Even though it takes me all of 30 seconds to get there, it's the kind of summertime place that I go when I'm with friends and feeling chipper. Last night there was a line of people waiting for their scoops, crowding the patio and sitting wherever they could find butt space. I always feel like I'm in good company when I go for ice cream anywhere, but very much so when I go to Sebastian Joe's. I wish I could say I've been taking advantage of my proximity for the last two years, but I've only indulged in S. Joey's creamy creations a handful of times. I'm kicking myself as I write this (it hurts a little), but I'll make up for that real soon. To quote the great Ani DiFranco, I think I may have enough days left on my lease for 32 flavors (and then some). Yesterday I started with a single scoop. Only 31 to go... see you at the gym.

Some of the best unique ice cream flavors ever! I am so happy every time I go to this ice cream shop. There are always enough options plus you can't go wrong with free samples! The parking situation is not the greatest and it is kind of spendy. But other than that, it is totally amazing!!! Great atmosphere.

I have a problem. An ice cream problem. I am so in love with ice cream I am one of those crazies that eats it in the middle of winter. Ice cream is seasonless. And I have found my ice cream heaven. I've been here before but it was many moons ago and Pre-yelping. The problem is that I kind of always forget about it. I know it exists but with all the other restaurants on my list of places to visit sometimes I neglect all the greats I've been to. I should make a "don't forget we are incredible" list. This is hands down the best ice cream I've ever had. It's creamy but not overly so. It's sweet but not so sweet that a double or triple scoop is out of the question. It's creative but not freaky.Freaky ice cream is fantastical (chili lime ice cream is bombtastic) but this is creative but not just for the sake of creativity. It makes sense. Now let me tell you about my favorite flavor: THE PAVAROTTI!!!! If this flavor isnt in the case every time I come in here I may cry. It's chocolate, carmel and banana. And it is sinful. It's like being getting a full body massage from George Clooney while laying on a white sandy beach in the virgin islands. yea, its that good. It's so good I wish they sold it at Cub or Target. It's so good I would drive 30 minutes every day to get there and have some if my wallet and waistline could ever forgive me. I can't wait until summer hits and I'm out and about more so I can come here more often. If you don't like this place you are not a human. Oh and the staff is a bunch of rockstars. Really nice people. They even let a couple do their engagement photos there and they let them get behind the counter to capture some cute coupley scooping on film for them.

I'm an ice cream lover...it might be one of my favorite foods! This place is the real deal. I would highly reccomend their signature flavors-oreo and raspberry chocolate chip. The Nicollet Ave Pothole also look incredibly but I seriously had to stop myself at 2 huge scoops. I'll be back!

Love the great variety of flavors and the helpful staff who graciously provide multiple tastes! Do NOT love the insanely long line that seems to appear every single summer evening I ever go here. (I guess it's a sign of how great their ice cream is!) Sometimes they have ice cream sandwiches that are made with huge, amazing chocolate cookies and raspberry chocolate chip ice cream. I could eat ten. All at once. I'm not a huge fan of the ambiance in this place, it's sort of loud and echoy when crowded, and the tables feel sort of close together. They have a patio, but it feels more like an alleyway with tables in it. Also, as far as ice cream goes this is going to be pricier than some places, but it's very high quality. They'll also let you taste a few flavors before making your decision, which is a nice bonus!

I have lived in new York, Chicago and Santa Monica. This place beats or matches up to any icecream I have eaten anywhere! I like getting the Oreo or the mango (seasonal) and ginger Icecream. The shakes are amazing as well. i change it up. and icecream on one visit and shake on the next. U must visit when ur in Minneapolis!

I honestly don't get the fascination with this place. Why is there such a huge following? I've been here a handful of times, all because the people I was with HAD TO GO. I like ice cream as much as the next person, but there's nothing especially great about this place that makes it better than several other places. I've had toasted coconut, pistachio, vanilla and maybe another flavor. For my preference, there aren't many options. Lots of chocolate (which I'm not into) and other things like cherry, mint, cookies and cream, etc. Aren't these the same flavors you'll find anywhere else? Are they really that much tastier here? I really wish there was Paciugo Gelato shop in that area, now that's I place I'd patron very very willingly.

  • Patrick P.

I've visited this place a couple times thinking the service would be better. The staff could use a lesson in personality and customer service which spoils there good ice cream. I was never greeted. There's so much going on behind the counter one does not know who is going to assist me . I shouldn't have to ask for service when I'm spending my money . Dairy Queen does better than they do :(

  • Tara C.

Disappointing. I used to go here all the time. Came back for my favorite - Pavarotti - and it was grainy, icy and had a weird bitter taste. Instead of being a nice treat, it was an overpriced, mediocre calorie bomb. Or would have been if I hadn't thrown half of it out. Poor service too. For a place that charges $3.50 for a small scoop of ice cream they had better do it right. I'm sad because this place used to be fantastic.

My favorite ice cream place in the Twin Cities, it doesn't hurt that it's a short walk away from me, but I've been a huge fan of Sebastian Joe's ever since I started visiting Minneapolis from the suburbs before I moved here. My favorite by a mile: BANANA CREAM PIE! o m g, so good, the pie chunks, all of it, epic. I usually get the shake. My reliable standby backup is usually the Raspberry Chocolate Chip shake. I really haven't had a bad flavor here, though. The line moves very fast and it's a nice place to visit on a summer (or any other) evening.

One word- YUMMY. This ice cream shop has a very wide variety of flavors. It is located in Uptown, which is one of the greatest places ever, which is right by Minneapolis, Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet. You must stop here if you are in Uptown.

So I love ice cream. Love it. I may be a little boring and usually go the cookies n cream route, or the espresso cookies n cream if it's available, but I knew I had to at least try the Pavarotti flavor at Sebastian Joe's. At first, I thought it was a little too sweet and a little weird, but after a couple of tastes, it started tasting "right" and i ended up finishing the entire thing. No surprise here...LOL My friend had the cinnamon and said that it was pretty spectacular. SJ's is definitely a cute little spot and a great after dinner place for some easy dessert.

Coldstone ain't shit! No seriously. You can put on a show, sing some childish bullshit songs, you can even "make your own ice cream" (which at most other places mean you take a powder mix, and then a dry flavor mix, and then let it run through an ice cream machine), or you can have Sebastian Joe's make it for you! I've NEVER had ice cream like this basically anywhere I have ever been! It is delicious, creamy, and fully of flavorful goodness! It's better than sex. It's better than having sex several times a day. If I ever gained weight from eating here (which is becoming a strong possibility) I will GIVE UP sex, just to keep eating the ice cream. Alright, enough gushing... The flavors are going to vary by when you go in there. There is limited availability because they mis SO many different flavors! My favorite, during the winter months (usually the beginning) they have a flavor called Nicollet Ave Pot Hole. It is chocolate, with sea salt, and carmel. I dunno who comes up with the ideas, but please, give them a raise! Prices are reasonable, and they give cold weather discounts which are nice in the winter! I just seriously can't get over how fan-fucking-tastic this place is!

I am down with the yogurt fad...but there is just something about a great ice cream shop and this one is my absolute favorite. I have great memories here- ice cream with my dad after a delightful show at the Children's Theatre, ice cream with new friends and old, and ice cream when I have my first date with my now husband. Not only are the memories great but the ice cream is too. My go-to flavors are the raspberry chocolate chip and oreo but I have been known to branch out and try their other delightful flavors (just tried The Formerly Known as Nicollet Ave Pothole and I am going to have to get it again).

Had the Malted Vanilla cone on a warm summer evening. Sat on the steps of the building down the street to enjoy the people watching while I finished my cone. The ice cream was delicious and cone was terrific as well. The only downside was the price. A lot of money for one tiny scoop of ice cream. If you want to know what value looks like, visit Nelson's Ice Cream in Stillwater. 5 stars for taste, 3 stars for value.

Sebastian Joe's is a Minneapolis icon. If you visit this sometimes freezing cold, sometimes steaming hot place, then you should definitely visit Sebastian Joe's. The Oreo ice cream is its most famous creation. The Sunny Sunflower Seed is also fantastic. Not to forget the Salty Caramel. Or the Pavoratti for that matter. They also have flavors for all seasons and occasions. If it's Christmas time go for the Egg Nog. Ice cream for breakfast? Go for the Sicilian Coffee. Cool fall day? Pumpkin! Hot summer night? Pina Colada of course. If it's a Sunday go for the Immaculate Confection (Minneapolis vanilla, honey, ginger and strudel). After a long Yoga session? Chai or Green Tea (or both). Taking your dog for a walk? Big Bark (White chocolate and almonds). Just drove through one of those famous Minneapolis pot holes? Definitely the Nicollet Avenue Pot Hole (Chocolate ice cream w/ fudge, truffles, heat bar & sea salt). So you can see they have a flavor for everything. However before you make a choice on what flavor to get - try a couple first, after all, this is important. Keep in mind, if you try more than three different flavors you might get a look from your scoopista. So use those taste tests carefully. They have some nice outside tables so if you drop by on a beautiful day be sure to eat outside and enjoy the sun. Also there's delicious cold press coffee, perfect for iced mochas. Finally - For you Minnesotans who grew up on DQ like myself, they also have Dilly Bar-esque treats that will make an original DQ Dilly Bar taste like rotten dirt. Oh yeah, there's also a regular crowd here on a hot weekend nights. It'll get busy. Considering it's just across from Liquor Lyles, I'm thinking there's some crossover clientele.

Great ice-cream! I should come here more and more because the ice-cream here is awesome. We dont live in uptown area but we dine around here quite a bit. The main reason we cant stop here that often is because of the parking situation. There were a few times when we were done with our lunch or early dinner and wanted to get the ice-cream here but had to give up because we couldnt find any parking space nearby after circling around more than three times. Although parking around here sucks, I and bf still love the ice-cream here. As Annie D. already mentioned, the oreo ice-cream is oh-my-gawd so good. My other faves include toasted coconut and ginger ice-cream. If I lived within a walking distance to this place, I would probably go every other day.

In order to preserve peace in our household, my wife and I have made a deal regarding Sebastian Joe's. I have agreed to go along with her whenever she wants, provided that we bike there. Although I'm sure the short bike ride from the North Loop to Uptown doesn't put much of a dent in the inevitable caloric intake, at least it helps. There doesn't seem to be a limit to the number of times she can eat here and still have a fifteen minute conversation with me about how Nicollet Pot Hole "is the best thing in the world". Yah, it's good. How about you try another flavor? It's gotten to the point where she calls ahead to make sure they have it before we head over there. On the other hand, it could be alot worse. This is seriously good ice cream.

BEST ice cream in town by far. WARNING: you will want to go back. Many many times. I can't tell you how good this is. You just need to try it. I suggest you drop whatever you're doing right now and go here. You won't regret it. SO many creative flavors and I've never been disappointed with a single one. They're homemade and mouth watering. My top flavors: cookie dough- you can't go wrong there. Nicollet Pot Hole- a delicious mix of rich chocolate ice cream, fudge, truffles, heath bar, and sea salt- yowza! Also try- banana cream pie- I usually am not a fan of banana flavored foods, but this is amazing! Salty caramel is incredible too. The lines get pretty long in the summer, but don't fret. They have enough employees to make it move surprisingly fast. Free wifi, nice people, and wonderful ice cream. This is the place to go on a blistering day. Or any day for that matter. Tip: if you like to eat and shop, Patina is right next door.

Love the ice cream. They make their own and have some of the tastiest original creations. The ice cream sandwiches are tasty. My favorite thing at Sebastian Joe's is the Oreo malt. I gave Seb Joe's five stars because whenever I visit, I always leave happy. :). Parking can be crazy though. Not enough for me to take away any stars.

Oreo ice cream! Ice cream cookie sandwiches! Waffle cones! These things get me excited. I forget I'm lactose intolerant when I'm here & after when I remember, I tell myself it's worth it. This is the only establishment that when the line is out the door, I don't scurry back to my car & take off. These people are pros and the line moves lightening fast! I always think parking is going to be a mess & it never is. I always think the patio will be full & there won't be anywhere to sit outside and there ALWAYS IS. This place is consistently awesome.

  • Finn K.

Sebastian Joe's close proximity, great Ice Cream and really good coffee make it the best dessert location in Lowry Hill and a main contender for morning coffee. The lines can get unattractively long in the summer but I'm sure the appearance of popularity actually draws more people, although I cant say this is the case for me.

  • Summer L.

You'd have to be sick in the head to not love Sebastian Joe's. I'm pretty sure that badmouthing them is akin to severe blasphemy in the metro. Everything is delicious. That's just how it goes. My last batch was a bowl with a scoop of plum ginger sorbet and a scoop of pineapple yogurt. It was fantastic, not that I ever doubted it for a minute before ordering it. Note: the Brr Bars? THEY WILL DESTROY YOU. I can't make it through a whole one. They are awesome, but trust me, your tummy doesn't want all that at once. It will bring the pain. The only gripe anyone ever has is that the place usually doesn't have enough seating. I've just got this to say to you: it's because you need to start walking it off before you even start eating it. The least they can do after giving you a calorie bomb is to assist you with some exercise, right?

How the hell had I not reviewed this place yet? It was my first taste of that local Minneapolis flavah! When I first moved here, my apartment was just 2 blocks away from SebJoe's and when I was lonely and didn't have any friends, I would walk here to order ice cream. Those days are now long gone. These days, I live a whopping 3 blocks from SebJoe's and have plenty of friends to eat Ice cream with. We usually go to Sebastian Joe's for the cold weather discounts. My favorite flavor? Nicollet Pothole. I like the homage to the neighborhood in the name. It is the ONLY dairy based ice cream I will take a Lactaid for, without hesitation. I usually accept my lactose intolerant destiny and all the joys it brings, such as always opting for the sorbet option, but when Nicollet Pothole is on the menu, watch out. Fudge, peanut butter, heath bar, chocolate cups, other yummy stuff that I forget all surrounded by chocolate ice cream. Though it's a sad day when Nicollet Pothole isn't a selection, their sorbets are pretty awesome too. My favorite is the key lime.

I went on a weekend night and my friends and I decided to be.. environmentally friendly, lol, and walked almost a mile plus here. So, my feet hurt a bit in my new shoes, but once I saw Sebastian Joe's appear before me, I walked just a bit faster- why? Because they had so many good signs, ie.... Décor: It's kind of on the corner of the street and there were a bunch of people eating ice cream outside of the little store. THAT, folks, Is a good sign. Next good sign? The line inside was LONG. It's a small place and that line was possible a quarter of the entire store, lol. And the place itself is nothing over the top, casual, basic and thoughtful (water fountain/towels/napkins/cups and even some computers for their customers to use!) More good signs?? Service: They go super quickly and are extremely helpful in telling you about the flavours and friendly/patient about letting you carefully choose which flavours of their delicious ice cream you want (yes, they give samples!) And I didn't even get to the best part, the ice cream is soooo creamy and the flavors are mixed in beautiful. I had the honey ice cream and it was just... wow, blew my mind. I didn't even notice I finished it until it was gone! Overall: So many good signs, such a great experience, go here!!!

  • Carrie W.

If you are in decisive, I wish you the best of luck here. There are soooo many good choices! Not to fear, they will patiently let you sample any flavor! I've probably sampled 5 in a row before. Although, that's kinda pushing it. I would suggest you mentally choose 4, ask what's in it, then sample 3. I love that they rotate flavors. There are some they always have, but a few like Salted Caramel or Coconut that they have off and on. Those two are my favorite. No matter how long they line, they are so fast! I can't remember ever waiting longer than 10min. One of my pet peeves is that it's FREEZING in there! I've heard that ice cream shops like to keep it cool so that the ice cream doesn't melt, could be a myth. I still think it's a little excessively cold there. Despite that, I love this spot. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy fabulous selections of ice cream. Good for kids, large groups, and dates.

I've never had the ice cream here. I am reviewing Seb Joe's solely on their morning menu: coffee and scones. Sounds like they're on par with their ice cream, according to the good reviews. Good coffee, their Cafe Ricki latte is to die for (it has a cinnamon stick and cayenne pepper...so unique), and the scones, which I'm quite picky about, are soft, crumbly and moist (I can't believe I just said 'moist'...). Now that it's getting all wintry outside and the desire for ice cream lessens, go here for amazing warm beverages instead!

This place is, by far, the best ice cream parlor I've ever been to. Sebastian Joe's features homemade ice cream and sorbet in a variety of flavors, including some I-never-thought-of-combining-that concoctions that, somehow, manage to be mind-blowing. The portions are generous, the flavors are rich and complex, and the only downside to the whole store is that it isn't right across the street from me. .... although that's probably a good thing, for my weight.. :) Once you go here, it's impossible to settle for franchised Coldstone or Dairy Queen ice cream ever again. I'd recommend trying a few different flavors - the raspberry sorbet made with real raspberries is a personal favorite - and bringing along some friends to share & taste each other's. I guarantee, once you've tried Sebastian Joe's, you'll be coming back again and again.

WOWZA! I got one scoop of the Nicollet Pot Hole. That's some salty ice cream there. It's a combination of chocolate ice cream with heath bar crunch pieces and a "bit" of sea salt. It was actually quite salty but still an extremely enjoyable ice cream. I'm also a big fan of the combination café and ice cream parlor idea.

My mouth is watering just thinking about Sebastian Joe's. Everything about this place screams summer fun and ice cream! I got the Pavarotti. Which is just chocolate overload. Heh, even saying the name is fun. Pavarotti. Pavarotti. Pavarotti. It's perhaps one of the creamiest ice creams I've ever had. The hardest part of this entire experience is actually choosing one flavour for your cone. But no worries, you can sample them before you make your decision. I had like 4 flavours before I went back to the typical [ chocolate] They also have all these radical flavours too, basil vanilla ice cream. say what? It was so delicious. *heart SJ

I miss this place. Everything about it is great, from the location, to the cool staff, the the awesome, awesome icre cream. Came here while on vacation and looking for mid day snack. Sebastian Joe's definetly hit the spot. I sampled a few flavors (Marion Berry DC Nut is delicious), but I wanted sorbet. I gort the pear and a scoop of the lime basil. The pear was excellent, some of the best sorbet I've had, but the lime basil was definetly the MVP. I seriously can't wait to go back. P.S Prices were very reasonable.

there's no better place to get a homemade scoop than Sebastian Joe's. Flavors at Sebastian Joe's range from traditional vanilla and Oreo, to more adventurous flavor combinations like their famous Pavarotti that features banana, caramel and chocolate chunks for an ice cream that is slightly coffee flavored and slightly fruity. It's always been difficult for me to choose my flavor of ice cream, especially at a place like Sebastian Joe's that offers at least 20 flavors. One of my favorite things about this neighborhood ice cream gem is that they willingly hand out heaping samples of any flavor you want to try. What better way to make sure you are getting the best flavor than to sample them all? On my most recent trip I had their Dulce de Leche, which was rich, smooth and creamy with the perfect amount of caramel. I also tried the Malted Chocolate, which was pretty much your standard chocolate ice cream with just a touch of malt flavoring. In the past, I've also had their Chocolate Chip Teddy Graham, which consisted of rich vanilla ice cream dotted with dark chocolate and chunks of cinnamon teddy grahams. Another flavor I tried that night was the Chocolate Caramel Cashew. This ice cream was full bodied with a dark chocolate flavor and whole chunks of mini chocolate covered caramels. One bite nearly put me in a chocolate coma, but the creamy salted cashews added a nice contrast to the sweet chocolate. I preferred the teddy graham ice cream, but my fiancé is a chocoholic and he was in heaven with the chocolate caramel cashew. There's no better place to grab a cone in the Twin Cities than Sebastian Joe's. And when you grab your ice cream and walk around nearby Lake of the Isles, it makes the perfect date night. Their homemade ice cream is definitely some of the best in town, and you will always be able to find a new flavor to try.

As a Twin Cities local, I have been to Sebastian Joe's many, many times. Though the Minnesota winters are absolutely brutal and the temptation to enjoy a scoop of ice cream diminished, this cafe has some of the best ice cream around. To begin with, the cafe is located in beautiful, trendy Uptown Minneapolis just off of I-94 and a few minutes from downtown. Though it is not technically within what I would consider the Calhoun Square Strip of Uptown (i.e., a place you'd run into walking the local businesses), this is still a premier destination, despite an occasional difficulty finding parking. They make their ice cream homemade each and every day, and if you are unable to find a flavor of the dozens they make each day, you are far too picky and should talk to someone. They have some of the most inventive names (many that cater to the humor of locals, mocking notoriously bad pothole roads, etc.) and a nice (but petite) lounge area to sit and enjoy during the winter. They have a beautiful patio area out front and on the side for the warmer summer months that make it a great end to a day walking around Lake Calhoun. But even during the winter, they find creative ways to attract business. Though it was a few years ago, I recall they offered discounts off of ice cream based on how cold below zero the temperature was outside. THAT'S creative marketing right there. The only problems I've ever noticed is that there isn't a LOT of seating when it is really busy in the summer, either indoors or outdoors, so be prepared. The staff has always been exceedingly friendly and funny though, and they also offer coffees, pastries, and light sandwiches.

Pretty much the best ice cream ever. The line can be pretty insane, though. So be prepared the wait. In my opinion, the wait is totally worth it because it is delicious. The Nicollet Ave Pothole is my favorite :)

Birthday Blues Let me start by saying I write these reviews and then I let it go because life is too short. Its my birthday and I am having a very pleasant morning. I live right across the street from Sebastian Joes so I wander over for a cup of coffee. I had two dollars in my pocket and completely forgot for the second time that their prices had went up and a small cup of coffee is now $2.05. I quickly told the barista who was kind and then the second barista jumped in with an attitude saying "we've already discussed this" and got very rude. Apparently he thought I was telling the barista this was my first time forgetting a nickel (which I didn't, I told her right away its my second I don't lie) , it's my second big whoop! I live right across the street, it took me ten seconds to go home and grab a dime out of my change jar. Upon returning with the dime (a nickel for each time I forgot) the guy still had an attitude. I've been coming here for three years and have never had a free cup of coffee because I'd rather pay then go through the trouble of getting a card punched. I've spent hundreds at Sebastian Joes but I'm treated like a street punk over a nickel? That is the last Sebastian Joes yuppie barista who will have the chance to treat me like dirt. I'd rather go to spy house where the coffee and service deserves a tip! And I've had waaaay better ice cream.

If you are in Minneapolis area and looking for a good ice cream place I suggest heading to St. Paul and going to COLD FRONT. Great little hole in the wall old school ice cream shop. Great flavors and super tasty, great staff too. Sebastian's had a long line for mediocre ice cream. The flavors left something to be desired. Their best ice cream flavor is the pot hole. That was pretty good. They apparently make their waffle cones in house, but not while you're there. They were not very crunchy and left a weird taste in my mouth. I did not like their waffle cones, I suggest going back to the drawing board on that one.

Delightful!! We stopped in after a meal and tasted a bunch of flavors. In particular I really like how every flavor is refreshing and definitely does not have any artificial taste. The blueberry mint ice cream had so many chunks of blueberry and fresh mint. The sweetness was perfect!!

Funky little shop with great ice cream! A definite top 10 in Minneapolis and we would know, we've been to quite a few ice cream shops! Perfect flavor pairings for any taste! When you walk in the air smells amazing and the staff are welcoming. The line was out the door but it didn't feel like a long wait. The end of the line is a treat to the nose with the amazing coffees available. We sat inside the closed patio and the kids enjoyed seeing the birds fly in for a visit before dancing back outdoors. Good time. Thanks Sebastian Joe's...great name!

Rich, flavorful ice creams and great selection of flavors and styles of serving it. On any given evening, expect to wait in line to make your selection and place your order. Service has usually been good. If you're coming from outside the neighborhood of this shop and you must park your car and it happens to be a busy evening, you may be driving around a while looking for someplace to park. It is nice, however, to stroll around in the neighborhood while enjoying your ice cream. Minneapolis has their Sebastian Joe's. St. Paul, right close to my 'hood, has Izzy's. I love Izzy's!

Anything with that long of a line full of happy people must be worth waiting for. The line was at least 30 people deep when we got there, but the staff was so efficient that it didn't take long at all. They have a good selection of flavors that are listed right behind the counter. They do have random flavors that you end up asking twenty questions before you order because the names are so odd, like Kare 11 sunrise, which is apparently lemon with something else mixed in. I personally got a small cup of the raspberry chocolate chip and it was more than enough. They have some indoor seating as well as quite a bit of benches and patio sets outside. Very good, homemade ice cream that is decently priced. Definitely worth a stop!

This is good ice cream. It definitely wasn't worth the long line or the 50% markup, but it's good ice cream. It's reminiscent of the kind you get at the store. Or other ice cream parlors. It had toppings. We got the Crunchy on the Bottom. Cool idea, reminiscent of breaking my cone and eating it out of a bowl. So, yeah. That's about it. It's good ice cream.

It's a great place to come in the summertime. Ice cream is on the thicker side, if you like that sort of ice cream. On a scale of Grand Old to Izzy's, I'd say it's in between. Personally a big fan of latter. I usually always get the Pavarotti or occasionally Nicollet Pothole, but I tried Passionfruit and thought it was surprisingly yummy. Waffle cone not as fresh though.. They used to have a discount depending on the weather (cheaper as the weather gets colder). Not sure if they still do though.

Update. Came here again to try another flavor: Salted Caramel. Nothing special, Izzy's take is better. I'll stick with my tub of Talenti or Haagen Daz over Sebastian Joe's. Another great alternative besides Izzy's Ice Cream would be Grand Ole Creamery in Saint Paul. You can check out my review there.

Came here with my kiddo on a warm almost-summer Saturday afternoon. The place was hopping and the line was pretty long, but that's good because it gives my indecisive self a change to ponder the menu like I am about to make a life changing decision. My kiddo is simple, he usually gets something fruity or chocolate. I sampled about 5 flavors before settling on almond mocha fudge (omg, right?) and he chose chocolate. Evidently there was some confusion in the handing out of cups because I think he ended up with a cookies n cream flavor, with oreo pieces in it, which was okay, because he loved it and I tried it too and it was awesome. The girls working were very nice about letting me try a thousand flavors. Also there was a bakery case that was mostly empty because it was late afternoon, bit I would be interested to see what's in there in the mornings, because I am a junkie for donuts and everything related. Kiddo said it was the best ice cream he's ever had. So there's that.

Sebastian Joe's happens to be within walking distance of several great restaurants, so even if you've stuffed your face at The Lowry, Rinata or Roat Osha you might find yourself at the door of the shop with a coincidentally ice cream cone shaped space in your stomach. The line is sometimes long but it moves quickly. The employees have been right on top of things each time I've been in. My favorite flavor so far has been the Dulce de Leche. I'm sorry, dude who was in line behind me, for taking the last scoop of it, I could see the sorrow in your eyes and I felt bad. We tried the Chocolate Coyote recently and it was not something I'd eat every day but it was unique and had a surprising amount of heat (it's chocolate with cayenne and cinnamon), which is an odd sensation in something you normally associate with cold and sweetness. They do even basics well, like the rich but simply pleasing chocolate chip flavor we had on our last visit. The waffle cones aren't my favorite of the local shops, I sometimes feel they taste a little stale though I feel pretty certain they're fresh. But I need to lose about 532 pounds thanks to Yelp and so getting my ice cream in a dish is A-OK.

We came here for ice cream on a Sunday afternoon, which also happened to be "National Ice Cream Day." The line was pretty long inside, but the staff did a good job at having it move quickly. There is seating inside, as well as outside on the patio - and the outside is dog friendly. There weren't a ton of ice cream flavors, but the ice cream itself was good. The waffle cones, though, were a little disappointing. Not only were they not as big as regular waffle cones (they were about the size and shape of a plain sugar cone), they tasted hard and stale. We ended up just eating the ice cream out of it and ditching most of the cone because it tasted old :(

The best ice cream in MN!!!! I usually get something light but their oreo is so worth it. Definitely the place to splurge if you've been waiting for one!! I also sampled their sorbet and loved it. Totally amazing ice cream. Go!! :)

At a ten minute walk from my house I will be here all the time! The ice cream is amazing, super creamy and they always have a variety of unique flavors. My current favorite is the White Chocolate and Almond, I know that it sounds like a pretty basic flavor but the taste is incredible! No matter what you pick get it on the chocolate dipped waffle cone to get the full experience. The staff here is also really friendly!

We were recommended to visit Sebastian Joe's while in Minneapolis. A nice side trip after visiting the Walker Art Museum. It's a nice vibe. And they were friendly - when my son dropped his ice cream on the floor, they gave him another one with no questions asked. They have a wide range of Sundays, smoothies, ice cream, and floats. I'm sure on a hot day this place will be jumping. Why only four stars? To be honest, the lemon sorbet that we had tasted somewhat artificial. I'm guessing other flavors are better. One other comment, you are only able to have one flavor if you get one scoop. In other ice cream stores, you normally can combine flavors. Half - half.

I love this place! I came by during the winter and they had a discount based on the temperature outside. Motivated by the 25% discount (might have been 20%), I ended up ordering an ice cream float consisting of soda, coffee, and ice cream, along with a scoop of the Bailey's Raspberry Truffle ice cream. Both were excellent. The ice cream was decently priced and the employees were friendly. I'm definitely planning on returning sometime this summer!

The ice cream is out of this world. The two flavors that are totally worth trying out is their Raspberry Choco and Pavarotti. Holy cow! Frozen explosion in your mouth. It's smooth, silky with a rich creamy taste! It's freaking amazing. Forget about gelato, forget about frozen custard/yogurt. Just come here and get a tasting of their sublime homemade ice cream in many of their unique flavors. The waffle cone could have been a little bit better. Towards the end of my handmade cone, it turned a little bit too stale. You can hardly bite into the cone so it becomes annoyingly chewy. But the ice cream here is top notch. So the cost... Yeah, it's really damn expensive for an ice cream scoop. $5-6 for one single scoop but I tell you what, it's worth the price they charge. Why you may ask...?Well, every lick, every bite of the ice cream makes you want to crave more and more. That's how damn delicious the ice cream here is. It's so addictive. I may one day just fly in just to grab a scoop and head back home. That's how good this ice cream is.

Normally I love this place but on this occasion, fail. Locally made ice cream, inventive flavors and a location near Lake of the Isles should be a winning combo. However, last Sunday night we took our out of town visiting friends there to show off what is one of the great spots in our city only to be served by the grumpiest guy ever. He looked annoyed to have to be serving customers, made it clear that he would not tolerate multiple requests to sample before purchase, and actually rolled his eyes when people hesitated in deciding between flavors. Sorry, but I thought that scooping ice cream in a business that sells over the counter to the public qualified as a customer service position. You would have thought by his obvious body language that standing there taking our money was on par with cleaning the restroom. Needless to say, I was embarrassed for Sebastian Joes and the counter staff. I ended up apologizing to our guests and assured them that this particular server must be an anomaly since that has never been our experience in frequenting the spot over the past 20 years. We will go back because the ice cream rocks but not when the scruffy guy is working the counter.

I came here after visiting The Walker Art Center. I tried the sorbets and they were so refreshing tasting, but I opted for the almond flavor with a homemade cone ($4.74). The cone was very fluffy and combined nicely with my ice cream.

  • Kien N.

I got the pavarotti and rasberry chocolate chip on a handmade waffle cone. The flavors blended well together for each ice cream, and the consistency was perfectly smooth. However, I like ice cream shops that get a little more bold with their flavors. There's nothing about these two flavors that make me crave it, and when I finished, I was left with little impression on what I just ate.

My favorite ice cream ever! I tried to stop by whenever I was in the neighborhood, making any excuse I could to convince my friends to go too. Their Oreo ice cream is the best Cookies N' Cream I've every had! Two scoops of it in a Ridiculous Sunday with chocolate sauce and almonds is amazing! Sometimes the line is a bit long, but it moves relatively quickly. I recommend heading over on a warm summer's night (when unfortunately the line will be long) and sitting outside to people watch on Hennepin Avenue. I truly miss their ice cream now that I've moved out of state!

Nice little place located in Uptown for authentic ice cream. Great variety of flavors and decent pricing, although they didn't have my favorite at the time: pistachio! :( Fun date place. I went in the winter time, but I can see this place being the go-to spot during the spring and summer months. I got the salty carmel flavor and she got the oreo (which was surprisingly delicious for a more basic flavor). Take the opportunity to try all the flavors you'd like too. Staff was helpful and friendly, which made the experience even more fun.

Coco Loco is a riot and not for the faint of heart however if you are feeling in the mood for an adventure then try the Bailey's Irish Cream ice cream with chocolate covered raspberry truffles. Its a treat within a treat. The servers are really nice people with an endless patience for both young and adults but yet skilled in keeping the crowd moving. So in case you have plans in uptown, visiting Sebastian Joe's ice cream may be the most hip note you can end the trip with.

Late night ice cream craving? Have no fear, Sebastian Joe's is here. Definitely a better alternative than your Dreyers selection at the nearest grocery store, but not a better alternative than total self control and munching on a carrot. Diet choices aside, there are quite a few different flavors available, ranging from the standard flavors (chocolate, sorbets) to the more esoteric. If the line is long, you can be one of those jerks who SIMPLY. MUST. TRY. EVERY. FLAVOR. Or, one of the overly nice ppl who just go with their one selection regardless of how good it is because they simply cannot bear the thought of the next person in line waiting even one smidgen of a second longer cause, who knows, their day could be horrible and ice cream is just what the doctor ordered but that could just be you trying hard to project your own imagination on them and they are actually just another average human being with one ear bud jammed in their ear listening to some Backstreet boys while trying to figure out of they eant chocolate or a lighter flavor. Feel free to ignore the preceding paragraph. I've come here twice with one success, with one time a super long line that I did not desire waiting in. I ended up getting a chocolate salted caramel flavor (forget the exact name). Flavorwise, good as a sample bite, but very rich for continued consumption. I'd recommend some water to cleanse the palate. Or sharing, for that matter. All in all, good location, good hours, good variety of ice cream, and courteous workers. Keep it up.

Scoop it, scoop it, scoop it real good! An extra scoop that is! I ice cream like Ruxton on The League loves fantasy football. I gotta have. Foodie goal=try all the ice cream joints in Minne. Here's the scoop: Thumbs up: -Fun location -Lots of different good flavors, homemade. Honey is the best must try! -lots of other options -plenty of indoor seating, outdoor seating too -dog friendly patio -reasonably $ Thumbs down: -not so fun parking -long lines I will be back!

Yum =) Tasty, creamy, ice cream - lots of flavors, and a coffee and malt shop too! They have a lovely little covered patio to enjoy as well, and while I didn't confirm this, it looked like a couple others found it to be a good work spot with their laptops. It's also on a cute street with other interesting shops to window shop through, so it makes for a perfect end to an evening out! I will go again.

This is the best ice cream shop in the Twin Cities, and one of the best in the United States, and I make a point to visit acclaimed ice cream shops whenever I travel. I am a regular devotee of their salted caramel and the cookie dough flavors. If you come here on an evening, the lines will be long and seating very limited, but it's worth the wait. Oh, their winter deal where they deduct a percentage off the price based on the freezing temperatures is nice too.

  • Brian S.

I can't decide which ice cream I like better: Sebastian Joe's or Izzy's. Both are pretty amazing, and one thing is for sure, they are both a HUGE cut above the rest of the Twin Cities' ice cream establishments. Sebastian Joe's does have a couple advantages over Izzy's: it's located in Uptown, has a lot of seating, and their cones are much better. They offer about 20 different varieties, and the signature raspberry chocolate chip is, as everyone else says, truly an amazing invention. No matter which of these competing ice cream places you pick, you can't go wrong, so give this place a try!

  • Catie F.

AMAZING ice cream, no matter the season. The flavors all feel home-made (I think they are?). The staff are helpful and patient, and let you sample as much as you'd like before ordering. You'll have plenty of time to think about your decision while you are in the long line, which is always present in warmer months. However, you can also sip on water and play trivial pursuit cards as you wait. They have hands-down THE BEST best oreo ice cream I've ever had - I'm not typically a huge fan of oreo, but I get it here whenever I come! I also really love the cinnamon variations like honey-cinnamon wafer or apple cinnamon crisp. There are always plenty of flavors to choose from, and you won't be disappointed. Prices are a little steep for the size of the ice cream, BUT it is such good quality that you won't mind too much. If you come during the cold months, they offer a discount on the ice cream depending on just how cold it gets. We went on a -20 degree day and got 25% off!

This place has good, delicious homemade flavors. The workers are really nice and were very generous in terms of letting me sample the different flavors. They gave recommendations and made sure I got my money's worth. Strawberry sorbet and almond ice cream are my favorites !

I needed ice cream in Uptown. We were promised an ice cream truck at Third Thursday at MIA and there was no ice cream truck... a pit stop at Sebastian Joe's was definitely in order. It was nearly 9pm on a Thursday and the line went all the way down the hall into the next adjacent room. My friend and I looked at each other with disappointment... then decided the ice cream is WORTH THE WAIT. I had only been to the Linden Hills location once before so I am unfamiliar with the menu... the very extensive menu of mouth-watering words like: caramel, dipped chocolate, truffles, fudge, swirls.... awww it's so hard to decide!!! A dipped waffle cone is always a must for me. So with that decision out of the way, which flavor ice cream do I choose? Chocolate Malted Vanilla made it to the finals but I felt like I should probably have another scoop on top... this is an authentic ice cream shop, you see. Pile it up! The energetic ice cream scoopers (people that scoop the ice cream) raved over the Nicollet Pothole. I gave it a taste. This decadent dessert has fudge, heath bars, truffles and sea salt. While it was delicious I had just too much fudge on my tiny spoon (I know, too much fudge? at the time, it was). I opted for the Pavaratti. Chocolate, bananas and chocolate chips. I realize this choice is probably not popular. The ice cream "scoopers" actually seemed appalled.. in a friendly way. I explained that in my pregnancy I've been craving bananas like the ape that I am. So they piled it up and I ate it so joyfully. Spendy. WORTH THE COST. Busy, but the line moved quickly. Cozy. Friendly. Best damn ice cream this side of the Mississippi. They also claim all natural ingredients with no artificial colors or flavors... which is funny because there are mainstream candy bars, toppings and things like Oreos in the stuff. Hmmm...

Sebastian Joe's you have won my heart. I used to not really like you as much as Grande Ole Creamery. I thought your ice creams flavors were just ok and it was missing something. Oh, how the times have changed! I LOVE your ice cream now and to prove it I have 6, yes that is correct, SIX, pints of ice cream in my freezer! Here are some of my favorites-salty caramel, Oreo, banana, ginger, and mango sorbet. The salty caramel is OUT OF THIS WORLD! And so is the Oreo!! I don't know how they make it so delicious, but it is awesome! And, the colder it gets the more you save on your ice cream. Now that is a great way to keep me coming in when it is -10 and the fact that the ice cream is so much better than it was a couple of years ago is another reason!

Ok. I live in Minneapolis. Have been to sebastian Joes near Harriet and lake of the isles literally scores if not hundreds of times in 30 years. I read the reviews. No body has talked about my absolute favorite part of Sebastian Joe's. It is not always available but when it is, it is hands down my favorite thing---Chocolate Coyote ice cream. To die for. My mouth is watering for the spicy Mexican chocolate flavor just thinking about it. If you're not a native Minnesotan and actually like a bit of kick and spicyness, order it (and take home a quart) if you spot it on the chalk board flavor list. Deliciousness!!!!!

This is definitely one of my favorite ice cream places! They have creative & differently flavors that they're constantly switching out.

If you're looking for a nostalgic childhood ice cream parlor, Sebastian Joe's is not your place. Their flavor "Nicollet Pothole" is sinful in the best way, and although they appear to be your neighborhood sweet spot, they're subtly and impressively edgy. I would describe their ice cream as a mix between classic ice cream we know and love and the gelato you get studying abroad in Italy that suddenly makes you "cultured." It's just the right amount of rich without leaving you with a first-rate stomach ache while simultaneously keeping you craving more. If you can handle lines, go during lunch time or on any bright, sunny day. Hate people? Try to go closer to closing or right at open. You'll typically find a line any time of day, any season, but the severity of said line fluctuates. No matter what, your taste buds won't be disappointed. Pro tip: get your ice cream in a dipped waffle cone, because I'm guessing you don't treat yourself enough, and why not go big?
