Rachel's, I kinda love you. I didn't think there could be anything "hidden" in NE, but it seems that Rachel's is. There are always people there but it seems to escape the riverfront crowd, the artsy crowd (avoid the H word) or any crowd in between. It's just a quiet mix of everything that is comfortable and a serious chill spot. The patio is just great. Big enough to accommodate, small enough to feel intimate. Inside feels like...i don't know...like it belongs on W 7th Street in St. Paul. It's clean and modern but feels old in all the good ways. Service has been very good. First time here they were severely understaffed, they told us up front (much appreciated) and we still had pretty good service. The wings. The wings. THE WINGS. I'd still love sauce on the side but these are seriously under appreciated wings. Monte Carlo knows what's up with the dry rub. Love that Maui guac. Pretty as hell. Tasty as hell. Wish it wasn't served on 47lbs of lettuce. I've sampled a few of the other sandwiches, burgers & apps as well and didn't find anything I didn't like. Parking can be a pain but there are so many places to walk to, including the river, it's a great reason to pop in a few other spots on the way back.

The best thing here was the "Dreamsicle" shake with orange vodka. The chocolate cake was dry, crumbly and inedible. We asked the server where it was from and he had no idea. Not a good sign. The corn beef hash was ok. The veggie sandwich was also ok. Neither were something we would order again. The patio was nice.

Elegant and cozy establishment. However the food I found to be lacking in flavor. Neat patio.

I actually really enjoyed my dining experience at Rachel's. I've lived so close to this place for years now and finally took the time to stop in. The menu itself was actually pretty small and offered a lot of lunch-type items like sandwiches, soups, sandwiches, and burgers. There was a good assortment of appetizers and unique array of desserts and adult milkshakes featured as well. I went against what I read on Yelp since I'm trying to give restaurants an unbiased first chance. We ordered the seared scallops with soba noodles, Chili with corn bread, and lemon basil pasta. Seared Scallops - could have been crispier on the outside, the texture felt like it was over cooked, obviously the heat should have been higher for the sear. The soba noodles were pretty basic -- they were served with fresh ginger and scallions. Maybe I went overboard on pouring the soy sauce on there. Overall, this was OK, but I probably wouldn't order it again. Chili - actually surprisingly *delicious*. The different flavors blended so well and you could tell they made it from scratch. The chili itself had chorizo, beans, sour cream, cheese, and some veggies in it. Might be one of the best chili dishes I've tried in a long time. There was either habanero or some fresh pepper in it that really gave it a kick at the end. The corn bread that came with it was below average - it did not taste anything like corn, rather angel food cake. Maybe I'm too used to famous dave's LOL. Lemon Basil Pasta - probably my favorite of the evening...the light cream sauce blended really nicely with the lemon and shrimp. The chopped basil rounded out the dish and balanced it out so the lemon and cream were not overwhelming. If you go to this restaurant, at least try this dish once. Overall, I would recommend Rachel's. It's a lot quieter than you'd expect for the location it's in in Northeast but the patio is super nice and it has a really cool vibe. Parking is available in the meter lot behind Rachel's or else on Hennepin at the meters. If you are there after 8pm, there's a pay lot across the street next to Chipotle.

Fantastic Event @ Rachel's! I recently organized an event at Rachel's Cafe for a company retirement party, I couldn't be happier with the result! Denise made excellent recommendations and advice on the menu items, maximum limits for open bar, etc. Everyone loved the event which was held on the outside patio. Great range of appetizers to choose from. I would definitely book another event with them!

Oh Rachel's. You drew me in with a patio on a warm summer's evening and I left pretty disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the service was great - our waiter was attentive, knowledgable and had super cute suspenders. I wasn't thrilled by the menu but enjoyed the veggie sandwich (excessive lettuce) and the French dip (pretty dry). Where it all goes to hell is with the Mojito. I paid $8 for a glass filled with soda water, some crumpled up mint and a semi squeezed lime. There was no muddling, I doubt there was any simple syrup - overall super disappointing. If you are going to charge $8 for a cocktail, please make it well.

One of the best steaks I've ever had, and definitely at the best price! Great service as well!

My husband played the where-should-we-dine game which consists of one of us choosing three restaurants and then the other picks one of those three. It's a great way to narrow it down without regrets or arguing. ;) Rachel's is close by and has a large, inviting patio and was new to us! The menu was basic and lack-luster. We first ordered the ahi-tuna guac and chips for an app. When I order guacamole I expect it to be a dip. (Duh.) This was cut up chunks of avocado mixed with pineapple, tuna and lots and lots of iceberg lettuce. I don't get it... how do you pass this off as guac??!?! NOT GUAC! The presentation was cool though - the avo salad was served in a giant martini glass that was on a plate with the tortilla chips sitting on the base. Clever and fun to eat out of... yeah, it was delicious but still not guac. Entrees: I ordered the Albuquerque Chicken Sandwich with sweet potato fries. (Sweet potato fries never get old for me, I don't care what you say.) This sandwich was huge and pretty good. It came with a huge roasted green chili pepper in the center with a grilled chicken breast. I saved half for next day's lunch (thrifty! woo!). Husband ordered the chicken asada with cilantro-mashed potatoes. These were whole pieces of roasted thighs that he gobbled down without a problem. I have been craving mashed potatoes lately and almost ordered the meat loaf just to get the tater fix... so I helped myself to spoonfuls of his instead. They were good... no cilantro taste whatsoever but still served to be pleasing comfort food that they are. Our server was spot-on. Friendly, attentive, apologetic when necessary. I ordered a ginger beer that he swore as delicious. He came back to me with a different ginger beer that he admitted knew little about since the other one he had talked up was no longer available. Forgivable based on honesty. I like that. Dessert: not a ton to choose from (they have adult malts BTW!) so I ordered a salted caramel malt. I waited quite awhile for this to arrive and when it did he poured it into a glass for me. I slurped much of it down quickly and when I tried to do my own refill I forgot to stir it and it all came dumping out onto the table instead of my glass! How embarrassing... a woman who appeared to be the manager came by and asked how this could have happened, insinuating that one of the servers had done this to me. I told her it was my own fault and she still didn't seem satisfied with that answer but brought extra towels anyway. Weird. All in all, decent food with a pleasant patio atmosphere and good servers who are probably hit by their manager mother too often to be appreciated.

Nice patio, but the food was flavorless and subpar. Roasted veggie sandwich had no seasoning. Rueben had dry floppy corned beef and soggy bread. Sweet potato fries were crispy and salted well, however, and the wine list is decent.

This place has some great decor, a fairly solid menu and very friendly servers. However the food was not as good as I expected it to be. I got the shrimp and tenderloin Singapore noodles and honestly it was wayy too salty. I was not able to taste any of the other ingredients in the recipe. I also got their homemade ginger ale which was fresh but not flavorful at all. I wish they told us that it's completely sugar free. I felt very well attended and loved the ambience but next time I'll go for something more American since that may be their better option.

We were very surprised with Rachel's. The front of the building gives the impression that the place is small. It is not. With the patio there is plenty of space here. The decor is fun and sets the tone. We were met by the bartender/waiter who was very friendly and provided both great conversation and service. We ordered the steak sandwich and meatloaf. The owner stopped to our table as we shared how we loved the steak. He explained the quality of the cut and proudly said, "the best $20 steak in the cities" and we would agree. The meatload was delicious. The place was quiet during our visit and parking was in the lot across the street. There is also street parking. It is a fun neighborhood to walk around before or after. Fun stores. We will be back to Rachel's.

I found this place just by chance after helping a friend move in nearby and now I am in love. The Maui guacamole is delicious and they make great drinks. In particular they make a great Manhattan and I tried my friend's Grasshopper and that was fabulous. This place is a little classier then the pubs across the street and it makes for a more comfortable environment. During the summer they have a cute patio that makes for a great place to get food day or night. The servers make it worth coming back to, they are attentive and seem to have a good sense of humor (which is important when serving a big group like we brought in the first time we came).

Great Staff! Great apps (Maui guac especially special)! Great drinks! Great patio! Awesomeness! Some other favorites are chicken wings.

Our hearts (and stomachs) sank when we walked in and found the place empty. But we were on a time-budget and on our way to a show at the Guthrie so decided to give it a go. Turns out the risk paid off. The decor was family-oriented and menu somewhat limited and simple but the food was fresh and tasty, the service was fast and friendly, and they helped us make it to our show with time to spare. Starters: hubby and I split the ice berg wedge. Although the blue cheese dressing was not as creamy or chunky as I like, the salad was *nicely* chilled, as a wedge should be and there was a pleasant amount of crispy bacon. My step-son and his girlfriend shared the Caesar and both seemed to enjoy it - at least there was nothing left on the plate if they did not. Burgers: both "kids" had burgers with regular fries. The burgers were cooked to a nice medium. Patties were hand made. We shared the black and blue burger (added bacon). It came on a pumpernickel bun, was spiced nicely, was cooked to an authentic medium and seemed to be a quality grade beef. We opted for the sweet potato fries and my husband said they were the best sweet potato fries he had ever eaten. Haven't ever been to the patio. Will have to try that in the summer.

Quite simply one of the most low key romantic restaurants. My wife and I have been here about 5 times. The service is always good and the bartenders are great, especially Jason. He is a master of the craft cocktail. You won't go wrong here if you want to just drink, the bar is great. The dining room is quaint, no loud and classy without being tired. The food is great American comfort food. The meat loaf is one of the best I have tasted. The chicken wings are the best I've ever had.

Went for a later dinner on a Saturday night. Easy parking and got right in. Surprised with the twist in tradition dishes such as the ahi tuna guac (super good, great mix of flavors) The waitress was great at describing menu items, and was just the right amount of available to take care of our needs but not be bothersome. Pricing was good. Definitely going back.

Well nothing like a nice patio in a great area of town on a beautiful summer night! A cocktail, some good old fashion city sounds and food sounds like a good addition as well. Now this place shares a patio with the Punch Pizza next door but it is a nice big area, sort of out of the way, off the street. The service was good and the owner even came out to chat for a while. Now I didn't have the nerve to tell him that the menu seemed really uninspired. I was reading it trying to figure out what kind of restaurant this was but couldn't really get a grip on it. Seemed to be a burger place but also fresh food, not quite healthy but somewhere in between. I had a burger and it was good, not great but good. I'd go back for the patio but if I wanted a burger I'd walk down the street to the Bulldog and have one there. Better than a patio in the burbs though. KT

I wanted to like this. I really did. It looked good. I ate dead mussels. Well, I put them in my mouth (they looked like they were alive prior to being cooked cuz the shells opened), and promptly spit them out. I did that to about 3 before I gave up on the whole dish. Need I say more?

Lemon Drop Martini!!!! By far THE best in town! If you want a great lounge-y environment without the added element of douchebag then you need to try this place! Great drinks...great atmosphere...what else is needed!

Fresh, high quality and affordable food. Excellent, attentive staff. The bartender, Jason, makes an amazing lemon drop and is always willing to make suggestions and allow guests to sample a drink if they are unsure. Sitting in the bar area and having Jason as your server is great! The other servers are wonderful too. The burgers here are a-mazing and often times I am afraid to try something new out of fear of not liking it but I haven't been disappointed yet. The scallops appetizer is big enough to be a light dinner entree, the wings are great-they have some type of curry batter and are the same as Monte Carlo, the tuna melt and Albuquerque chicken sandwich are also delicious, and the potato salad is the best around. This is a place where the staff makes a point to remember your name and what you like to order and makes you feel right at home. Highly recommend!

I thought the food was the weakest part of this restaurant, but the space is cute and comfortable and if I lived in the 'hood I would definitely make it one of my regular spots for a drink. My friend had a burger and said it was delicious. And since the guy who owns this place is the owner of Monte Carlo, they serve Monte Carlo chicken wings here. If you've never had them, you must. They are fantastic. But otherwise the menu seems really uninspired and doesn't seem to match the ambience of the restaurant. Good enough, but nothing special.

So...this place is open now. I pretty much barged into this place when I saw people moving around inside. It's been there forever, but never open, so you can imagine my excitement. I immediately went for the bourbon selection and ordered a Knob Creek. I wasn't sure if anyone heard me, or if they were actually open for business. Then I went out to the patio and sat down. For about a minute. Then I went back inside to see what was up and they were telling us that they were about to close or something and that they couldn't serve booze to the patio. "No problem," I said. "You can just pour it and I'll take it out there." This is where it got awkward. I instructed my cohorts to also order drinks even though they were looking at me like they wanted to leave. Also, the owners and management were looking at me this way too. Obviously I don't realize these things until much later so I just stood there and waited for my bourbon. I reached for it on the bar, but a lady working there put it on a tray and said that she'd carry it out to the patio. So I followed the bourbon. We sat there for a while. The owners and management sat at the table next to us, probably waiting for us to leave or something. I was probably talking about something roughly inappropriate - Zionism or abortion or something - so eventually the owner came over and sat next to me. He and I spent the next 30 minutes or so talking about ice cream and jewish stereotypes. After all that we left. He told me I could have a drink on him next time I am there, but I haven't been back since. I suppose you could just pretend like this is your story and tell him yourself, and maybe get that free drink. I don't know. Point is, there's a free drink there if anyone wants it.

Disappointing at best. Limited beer selection and bad food. The atmosphere inside is sort of family-ish, but trying to be nicer. I started with the BBQ Ribs appetizer, and it was bad. It tasted like fry oil and the meat was tough. Not at all what I want from ribs. My table had mostly burgers and none of us enjoyed them enough to consider going back. The owner came over and talked with us briefly, and it was awkward, like talking to an old stoner. I did learn that he came from Southern California, so that kind of explains the disappointing burger.

After missing Bobino's patio for many years, Rachel's is welcome addition to Northeast. The menu mimics the Monte Carlo, with a few nice additions. Service was fantastic and prices reasonable. We enjoyed the patio salad and the peel & eat shrimp. Next time, we'll try the burgers!

First and foremost, the service here is fantastic! Aside from our waitress who was very attentive and friendly, both of the owners stopped by to our table and thanked us for dining. I had the olive burger which was cooked perfectly and the bun was so soft - would definitely get it again. The chocolate cake was also to die for! Overall this is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant and I would highly recommend it!

Two points: 1) The best burgers. I don't know how or why, but they are simply better. Eat them, you'll see. 2) Charleen Salad. Bright and refreshing, with tons of tasty stuff - like avocado, shaved fennel, and hard boiled egg. I would come back just for this. The staff is super friendly, and you're likely to run into the owner who makes you feel like his personal guest.

Although I work in Nordeast and frequent several bars in the Hennepin/University area, I'd never been to Rachel's until this evening when a few of us girls from work decided to try something new. It's a very cute place - the decór is neat and the patio looks like it'd be fabulous in warm months (after all, it IS November in Minnesota so we're all in "winter mode" these days) - and I think we'll be back. We were surprised they don't have a happy hour special...especially with the somewhat limited menu one would think they'd offer a bit of incentive to come in. Not that the food wasn't good - it was! - but their menu consists of chili (no soups), a few appetizers, a few salads, a few entrées and several burgers/sandwiches. What they lack in food they definitely make up for (in my humble opinion) in the beer & wine selection. Also, the service was good - our young server was attendant to the point of coming too often...although I guess I'd rather have that than a server who doesn't stop by more than 3 times during a happy hour visit...plus, the guy rattled off the ENTIRE beer list (I don't know how many, but it was a lot to memorize) all by ROTE. You go, buddy. Plus, "Denise" (manager? owner? we don't know...but she was super-nice!) stopped by to ask how everything was, how we were doing, and even asked all our names. Very nice gal. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to go again soon - even if just for the great atmosphere and good service - but I'm more excited for next summer when it'll be warm enough to frequent the patio (which is dog-friendly! That's per Denise, btw). Cliff notes: I'd go again :)

A friend and I recently visited Rachel's for the first time. I had a bacon cheeseburger and my friend had the lamb burger. We were both pleased with our choices. Their burgers are cooked medium which is a nice change from the well done you usually get unless you ask otherwise. The menu isn't extensive, but they have a great outdoor seating area and a full bar. What more do you want? The staff was friendly and the owner even checked in with us to see how our meal was.

First sat outsidie but it became to windy so we had to move inside. The patio is very peaceful. I felt as if I was in NY. Inside, there was so much to look at. The pictures on the wall made for great conversation. You must try the lamb burger. My husband ordered it and I ended up eating his. The bar had so many selection to choose from. Service knew what they were doing and management (or owner) stopped to thank us for coming in. I'll be back, felt like I was at home.

Full bar. expert bar tender. fast friendly waitress. delightful menu with low prices. Mix of American classics (chili, burgers, salads, soup) and elegant main entrees. The owner was there and showed us to a cozy booth seat. The staff has a nifty sense of humor. I felt really welcome. And the chilli was delicious! My bill for two people food (no drinks) was around $20.

I've heard some good things about Rachel's, so when my friends and I decided to go there for a little snack I was excited to see what this place has to offer. Turns out all the have are excuses for why things can't get done. About 8 of us showed up, and while most of us had eaten before we all got drinks and a couple grabbed some food. I grabbed a milkshake and some friends grabbed the French Dip and the Lemon Basil pasta dish. Fast forward to 30 minutes later and my milkshake isn't there (even though one with alcohol came out in 5) The waiteress kept saying that they had a new menu, which is fine but it is not that hard to make a shake. I wait another 15 min, and my friends food comes out. So we're at 45 min now for food and a shake. All this and there are only 3 or 4 other tables at the restaurant. The food comes out and the fries are soggy with the sandwich and the salad that came with the pasta dish didn't even make it out to the table until 10 min after the entree was brought out. Still no milkshake though. It's now been an hour so I asked the waiteress to cancel it, she informed me that they had a new menu and some things take time. She didn't seem to care about anything but rather just repeating the same phrase over and over (we have a new menu) I told her just cancel it because a shake should not take over and hour. Then the manager comes out and says I'm sorry about the wait and that the cooks have never made a shake before. Which to me sounds like you've done a pathetic job of hiring if that's the case. But he did bring shakes and says that they are comp'ed for me. This would have been soomewhat acceptable had the shakes been drinkable, however they were not. Runny with chunks of god only know what in there, unacceptable. We informed the manger again about our visit there and all he had to say was sorry. I would never recommend this place unless you like horrible service from waitstaff and managers, and very subpar food. There are some many places to eat in that area, it astounds me that Rachel's is even in business. Avoid this place like the plague.

So glad this is finally open. Atmosphere is nice ~ I like the wonky curves above the bar and various lighting going on, though the left end of the bar by the flatscreen could use a little attention. It's an awful corner to stare at compared to the rest of the place, but if you know not to lose yourself into this void it shouldn't be much of a problem. I got the french dip and wings for takeout and they were pretty tasty. I've had some over-salted french dips in my life and I'm glad they didn't do that here. Wings were obviously rad. Can't wait to go back for the weird London pasta thing and the wealth of burgers. While there are some great places for beer in Northeast, it doesn't seem to be something they're very interested in here. I got a Guinness by default and I was given a glass and a draught bottle. I sort of hate bottled Guinness as it has some extra bite to it... but the owner was very gracious and gave me a second one - and of course two of any beer can make you forgive just about any trifling disagreement with its tap vs bottle flavor. Owner was cool and friendly - bartender was engaging and fun and fast about things. Overall really good experience and a nice addition to the neighborhood.

I had been meaning to go to Rachel's since opening, and finally found a perfect night to sit on the patio. The location is great, and the outside seating area was as comfortable as I expected. I also giving them credit for a great wine selection. Beyond that, I would say the last thing NE needs is another restaurant with a menu of half burgers, half sandwiches that could easily be found anywhere (including across and up and down Hennepin). The mussels were still gritty, the cocktail for shrimp was bland and tasted store-bought, and the dressing on the Charleen salad had absolutely no acid. Bottom line: great place in the summer to sit out for a drink, but you should save your appetite.

Last night was our 3rd or 4th visit and we have never been disappointed. We've also never had to wait for a table and last night was no exception. Even tho it was a perfect 80-something, there were still spots on the patio at 8p and we couldn't have been happier. The wait staff is always so attentive - almost to the point of too much - and the food is different and delicious. For the second time I had the egg salad with olives and planned to only eat half......well at least I didn't finish all the bread. Our drinks and food were fast.....the food was great......the prices reasonable......the staff attentive......what more could you ask for???? Maybe a few more items on the menu?

As you walk in you are greeted by warm smiling faces and kind welcoming words. This is how you should be greeted at every restaurant yet this is almost never the case. They asked me where I would like to sit which was a nice change. I had read about this restaurant and knew that there were raving reviews about the burgers. I have to agree 100%. I don't order burgers that often but this avocado burger was one of the most flavorful and fresh tasting burgers I have had. I liked how the entire staff worked as one, the host at one point had delivered our food, our server refilled our soda's before they were completely empty and the head cook personally checked to see how the food was. It doesn't get much better than this folks. If anyone reading this is in the industry, go to Rachel's and see where the bar has been raised. Rachel's- you nailed it. You have the entire package and quality every restaurant can only aspire to obtain.

This restaurant is beautiful. Simply designed and very comfortable. The patio is lovely and a nice respute from the bar scene in the area. Service could have not been any better. 2 brunette ladies, one seemed to be a hostess or something but watched are table so that she knew we had been waiting a bit (3 min) so she took over. The were very on top of things, friendly, and made us feel like they wanted us there. I really appreciate that, as there are many good places to eat in the city but service is lacking IMHO. The food is very reasonable and delicious. The burgers are AWESOME! Cooked to perfection and while large, not so large that it overwhelms you. I rarely get burgers out due to there massive size and overabundance of crap on them, but, you can get whatever you would like on you burger, you have the option here. I got the French Burgers, onions and pickles. So yummy and the bun was great, too. Coleslaw side and it was creamy. Different then your normal but I like it. My husband got the Singapore Charlie, a noodle dish with steak, scallops, and a spice sauce. Meat and seafood were tender and not over done. A unique dish but very well done. With our 2 entrees, 2 beers and 2 wines, the bill was $60!! We will be back and thanks for the great night out!
