One of my favorite cafés in the twin cities, not for their coffee (which is great) but for their food. I almost always get the same thing: the turkey cranberry panini. It's EXCELLENT. The turkey+fruit sandwich is an increasingly popular trope in cafés everywhere, and this is the best I've had anywhere. The café itself is pleasantly situated, with outdoor seating as well as two levels of indoor tables (including coveted seats next to the fireplace--anticipate these being taken during the winter) If you're in the area and need coffee or a bite to eat, Overflow is a solid pick.

My favorite coffee shop in Minneapolis. Their coffee is simply superb. However they also have an awesome breakfast collection that I cannot recommend enough. They have ample parking and the baristas are just very nice. It feels good to tip them well!! As they say "it is not Starbucks but it is full of people who used to go to Starbucks".

Great coffee house for studying! I've been enjoying the white mocha (quite tasty!) and the poppy seed muffins are utterly delicious! I drove over twenty minutes out of my way just to come back to this place. You can get a nice breakfast latte + muffin and study for a couple of solid hours and grab a sandwich or wrap for lunch. Very nice environment that allows you to focus and get things done! I'll definitly be returning!

Good coffee- crappy baristas. I have gone to overflow now for one year as my son attends the daycare next door. I have been a paying customer and have spent a lot of money supporting this coffee shop. I look forward to having coffee in the morning or before I pick him up so I go to Overflow. The staff since the beginning, has been nothing but rude and pretentious. They barely say hello to you, have never thanked me or even started a conversation considering I have been there at least three times a week for a better part of a year. I was just in there moments ago. The barista barely spoke to me and acted completely annoyed when I inquired about the scones and later a to go bag for my scone. I am done supporting this shop. I have never been treated so poorly. Today was the last straw. The terrible thing is- the coffee is really good so if you can stomach rude and pretentious staff- this place is for you. Update: so I decided to call the Manager of the establishment and give him some feedback about my experiences. The person who answered the telephone said to call back after 2pm or 4pm as this is when he would be available and could not talk at any point before that because he was 'busy.' She didn't check to see if he could take a call- she just stated this to me. It is 9:45am. I guess this tells you something about their customer service and their strive to make customers satisfied.

Christian rock... It's not my favorite genre of music, mainly because it reminds me of puke-in-my-mouth shows such as 7th Heaven and One Tree Hill (where people cry throughout each episode while emo music tirelessly plays in the background). But despite this sin (get it?), I think Overflow is great because 1) the music wasn't obscenely loud and 2) there's a loft! Loft is def. a redeeming quality. And there are other things I like, too. I soooo wanted to try their coffee, but I knew any cup of joe past 5 pm would've caused me to twist and turn in my bed until 4 in the morn. So, I went with their chai latte and an apple fritter for a snack. Overall, both were absolutely tasty, especially the candy-sweet fritter that caused me to lick all of the decadent frosting off of my fingers. Other tidbits: -Their seriously strong wifi rocks, and it doesn't require a password. (Woot woot!) -Are their bathroom sinks from the future? (See pic uploaded.) -The woman behind the counter was very nice. I'll definitely be back, if I'm ever in the area. Oh--and if you're wondering where I hunkered down to pound out some work, I, of course, sat in the loft.

I walked in to this place because I was supposed to see a friend. It was hot, and I didn't really feel like coffee. My eyes fell upon this beverage called "Rose Lemonade." I know what you are thinking, rose flavored lemonade? Roses smell like poo poo. But oh... oh how you would be wrong. I am hooked. I don't know what's in the rose lemonade other than good old fashioned lemons and what they call their "rose flavoring," but at this point it really doesn't matter. I love coffee. I do. It just does not take over my mind at Overflow as much as the rose lemonade does during the warmer months and it is just borderline ridiculous how far out of the way I will go to get it. If they sold it in a growler I would buy it. Enough the slightly over obsessed raving about the dang lemonade. The atmosphere is perfect for studying or chatting with your friends. The staff is unpretentious and helpful, it really gives you the small business feel and warmth. Highly recommended but sometimes they have construction right around there... that makes it seem like you are about to go do a rally race into the lot off-road style... but for that rose lemonade... I shall overcome.

What a pleasant surprise! I don't catch myself in the neighborhood often, and have always loved Cupcake nearby. But Overflow has it all! Affable baristas Ample Chairs/tables Daily chalkboard specials for grub indoor coffee mug water fountain! Broad selection of drinks (seasonal and teas) The above combination of charm, quality, convenience, value, and friendliness has convinced me to run more errands on University Ave!

Dear Minneapolis Yelpers, The next time you head to the Windy City please bring me one (or 5) of Overflow Espresso Cafe's uhmazing butterscotch chocolate covered rice krispie treats. You can leave their greek salad wrap and coffee back in Minneapolis because I've had better in Chicago, but not many businesses can make a rice krispie treat that good. Thank you, Andrea R Rice Krispie Treat Obsessed Chicago Yelper

Space- better than the Purple Onion. I love the loft and working fire place, natural light, and parking lot. Plus free wifi. Food - They offer daily specials. My favorite is the Monday and Sunday deal on the caesar wrap. It's warm chicken wrapped with mixed greens and the lightest touch of dressing in a tortilla shell; it's just the right amount of food to not put me in a coma while studying, and it's $4.95. Also, I would highly recommend adding the chips, I have no idea what the favor is but they are addictive and for 80 cents you can't say no. I'm not a coffee drinker so I have nothing to say on that front. I have two cons. Overflow shuts down at 9 pm every night. It's a clean space but near the end of the evening there's an overwhelming smell of floor cleaner, like someone spilled pine sol up my noise and I'm choking on it. Beyond trying to call it a night before that happens, this is my go to spot for studying from now on.

I worked across the street for over a year. It took me about 6 months but I finally got the polite, yet stoic coffee dude to genuinely smile at me when I would pop in to order my 3rd chai latte with soy in one week. VICTORY! They also started giving me extra chips! I really like the feel of the place from the loft to the fireplace to the coffee cup foundation covered in quotes. It is a good, cozy atmosphere. The drinks are yummy. I would suggest looking at their seasonal list. I am a big fan of their chai-der (cider & chai) and the summertime strawberry creme soda. Baked goods are pretty yummy. The food is fresh, although a tad bit overpriced. Oh, but their chips are magical. Seriously, I don't know what they put on them but it has been scientifically proven that it is impossible to not love them. So. Good.

Great cafe to work, chill or meet friends. I usually go here before I go to the TCF Stadium for Gopher games and now Viking games. Clean bathrooms and strong coffee makes for an amazing experience for me. Plus they have an upstairs area I like and outdoor seating when it's nice out.

Good, inexpensive coffee. Not as strong as I'd like, but some mornings my delicate digestive system can't handle Dunn Bro's bulletproof coffee. Delicious breakfast sandwiches as big as your head. I was pleasantly shocked. Mostly friendly baristas, and a super convenient location across the street from prospect park station.

Stopped by for a change in study space and found this gem. They serve the best white hot chocolate around hands down. Great ambiance and friendly baristas as well.

I used to work in a building really close to here, it's the only coffee shop in walking distance, but after visiting I found it was worthwhile for more reasons than just the convenience. Overflow is basically on top of the Prospect Park green line stop. Their chai is delicious and reasonably priced. They have a second floor loft type seating area as well as spacious and comfy seating on their first floor. Bike parking and a huge patio (when weather permits of course...this is Minnesota, after all). Two thumbs up, Overflow!

Years ago when Overflow first opened I tried to sample on their first week. There was one person ahead of me and it took about 7 minutes for me to get what turned out to be a weak dark roast. I vowed never to patronize this place again. Skip to present day. I was in the area and figured that's long ago let's try again. This is an attractive place to a point. The counter is cramped looking but the large wall menu is nicely categorized and easy to read. This time has to be better? There was one person ahead of me and one barista on duty, although other employees were cramped into a break room off the kitchen. Evidently they don't stagger breaks too well. I waited close to 7 minutes to place an order for a dark roast which turned out to be like your mom's instant Sanka. Deja-Vu dudes. I did enjoy the outdoor patio and the heavy wrought iron chairs that have a slight rocking motion if you desire. This place might make a cool restaurant eventually but they would have to chop the interior to make some decent kitchen space. I sipped some of the weak brew and watched the Green Line trains roll in and out (some interesting people watching at the LRT platform). Dumped the remainder of the coffee and left.

Excellent service, but why does my vanilla latte taste of acorn squash? Something is amiss.

I like the Overflow Cafe because it's close to my work, a quick drive and you're there. I really enjoy their Cinnamon Bun Latte, and their Thai Peanut Chicken wrap is delicious! I also enjoy their brewed coffee, however - sometimes it's too strong and I am a fan of strong coffee so that's saying something. No worries though, I will still drink it! I love the large teacup in the middle of the cafe - reminds me of the Mad Hatter's tea party! The fireplace is also quite cozy from October - April. I am quite sure I just had the most delicious Chai Latte of my entire life here - so, I will happily continue to frequent this establishment.

I've been here probably a dozen times over the past few years. As we've established in my previous reviews, I am not a coffee connoisseur. I like dark drip coffee, preferably extra strong with lots of caffeine. This place meets this basic requirement, although the coffee could be a smidge stronger. Recently, I ordered a hot tea instead of coffee. They had a decent selection of teas (again, not a tea expert - just what I drink when I'm trying to avoid coffee breath) but they gave it to me in a to-go cup without asking if I was staying or going. This created the awkward "where do I put my teabag" as I had no saucer. I certainly could have asked for one...but as I lack planning skills, I had already lifted the teabag out of my drink before realizing I had no where to put it. Anyway, a real cup/saucer is always appreciated if I'm staying. The baked good selection (and let's be honest, that's really why I come to coffee shops) is lacking. Think cookies and some rice krispy treats. Not bad, but I like variety and options. The service here is usually pretty good, they're prompt and polite. No complaints. Decor is modern-ish, although not as cozy as I like my coffee shops. It can be kind of echoy/loud in there if people are having an animated conversation. After skimming the the other reviews, I am hesitant to come back here if the owner is actively pro-abstinence only education. Abstinence only education flat out does not work, and I don't care to spend my money in places that support it in any way. You might feel differently, which is great. Just my personal views. I'll be doing my own research on this to determine if the owner actually does support abstinence only education, and I suggest you do the same rather than just accepting what's on yelp. I will add that the name of this place and some images on the website are vaguely religious as well.

I used to frequent this place while working on my thesis proposal. A bit dark to work, but enough room to work while enjoying an espresso or a tea. Contrary to the previous review (unless things have changed) they do use an automatic espresso machine and do not draw their own shots. It's not bad espresso though. Their tea selections are also pretty good. I did have to stop patronizing this place, though. I knew it was run by a religious (person, group, whatever) and I didn't mind it as they generally kept to themselves. This changed, though, when they hosted a large function (the entire main floor) dedicated to pushing abstinence only education in our school systems. I don't recall the name of the organization, but (when I looked them up) their website was quite open about their efforts to push their religion and their anti-health agenda in our public schools. I can't stand for such an overt action aimed at harming our youth. Just thought others should know, so their can make their own informed decisions.

They deserve 4 stars based on their cold press alone. I haven't tried much else here, other than an iced chai a while back. Lots of room, a little loft for studying.

I was pretty excited to learn about Overflow last year, during my search for new cafes open later than 10pm. They are open until 11pm. It's very stylish inside. The bathroom sinks are surprisingly cool looking. The faucet is something I'd like to have in my own bathroom. I'm sure it would encourage me to wash my hands more. Just kidding! Service is definitely five stars. Every time I've been there, the people have been very friendly. They're even nicer compared to non-baristas, just to give you an idea. This makes you feel good about yourself, instead of feeling ashamed when you typically order coffee or tea at hipster cafes. Although they forgot my Arnold Palmer today, they gave me one quickly and upgraded the size, too. They have an extensive food menu, but I've never tried anything. Still, it's a nice touch if you want more than a muffin. Also in the summer, they sell root beer floats. Mmmm. One major con is that the ceilings are quite high, so noise bounces around A LOT. People like coming here to chat, so don't come here to study if you like church-mouse noise levels. Also, they need more electrical outlets. The owner is a young female entrepreneur. That's pretty cool and it's nice to see a successful venture. But because I got a weird vibe about the place when I first came here, my red-dar is pretty strong. So I did some Google-fu and found out that she does a lot of speaking regarding abstinence. Since I don't really believe in abstinence-only education - Hello, Bristol Palin - this was a conflicting discovery. I don't think it will really deter me from coming here, although I'll be sure to make out with my boyfriend in the corner or something to balance things out. Happy 69th Yelp Review, hahaha!!

I really enjoy going to Overflow for lunch; the Overflow Club is extremely good. As far as their coffee goes, I'm a big fan! I moved into the area at the end of May, and this has become my choice coffee shop quickly due to service, atmosphere, and quality. :)

I walked in and then walked out. But I saw enough to rate the place. First of all, I had to leave because I couldn't even find a seat. I'm not generally a crowdaphobe - I like my cafes bustling - but this was too much. All of the seats were taken by camped-out U of M undergrads...and that tone is one I could skip. The decor is not much more sophisticated than a Caribou - it's very corporate feeling. The stand-alone building is set really awkwardly on the site - it's set back from University Avenue, and if you park in the rear lot, you kind of have to walk around a strange vacant retention-pond like space. I'm not even sure what that is, but it had ice in it and was a big open space. Anyway, the cafe. The pastry case was almost empty, but what was there looked awful - pre-made/packaged/chemical-imbued nightmare. The espresso machine had buttons for automatic operation - not a good sign either. And the place was just overall really dirty. I thought their big mug-fountain thing with quotes on it was cool, but that does not a good cafe make. I wound up going to Cupcake down the block afterward - which, despite the Yelper grumblings, was a far more serene space, with better food and drinks.

I came here after I had all I could take of the noise at Kopplin's. I had a hot chocolate there that tasted great, but lukewarm. Here it was hot, but didn't taste great. But for me it's got the atmosphere that I think all coffee shops should have. Dark, yet plenty of light for reading, there are lots of lights around. A fireplace with overstuffed chairs, but it definitely needs a big coffee table to put your food and drink on because it's kind of a reading area. There is a lot of room here, and little hidden areas. It would actually make a nice restaurant. It has a cool upstairs area too. I love the cabin feeling. It has a great bathroom, right there, not hell and gone. A single, large men and women's room, and yes that sink is remarkable. I think it will be a beautiful patio area come spring. You don't even mind that you have to climb stairs to get there. I could see this as a new hangout and trying some food items. The drink selection at Lulu's is far more memorable. I love how you can't miss what time it is.

I had a great tomato soup here this winter. The Greek salad wrap I had last night wasn't all that, but that is probably because I didn't get a chance to eat until it had sat for some time. They offer free wifi (which, thankfully for us, isn't an uncommon thing in the TC). The servers are nice, they have a nice smattering of furniture around the two floors. It's definitely a U hang out, but I felt like there were more grad students than undergrads. If I'm in the area again (ie the Textile Center), I'd definitely pop in for a coffee and internet browse.

First off...maybe it makes me lame, but I like a good inspirational quote here and there! Mooooving on... What a lovely coffee shop - a great place to get together with a couple of friends and chat - they have some board games around the fireplace you can play. Great smoothies. GREAT smoothies. I have stopped trying to do homework here, mostly because it gets rather crowded during peak hours - it's open until 11, but now that I've moved out of the area, I don't want to have to commute home at 11. Chalk that up to laziness, but anyway, I'm rambling. Point is, it's busy. But if you can deal with that, the bottomless cup of coffee lets you stay for a long time with a continuously warm drink. So, a star docked for it being too crowded sometimes....yup. Check it out if you are in prospect park for something.

This is a place I routinely stop for coffee on my way to work (I work nearby) and am always satisfied with not only the coffee, but the service also; it's really down-to-earth, if that makes sense. They aren't sending that 'buy a damn scone' vibe, if you also know what I mean. They even have a mezzanine I always see people sequestering themselves to be out of the general traffic pattern. I recommend the "Overflow Club" turkey sandwich, the bacon adds perfectly crispy goodness. I'm rating it $ because a coffee and baked good or Naked isn't any more money than other places, but it'll be $$ if you add anything from the kitchen.

Check this place out. It's a beautiful fake diamond in a rough landscape of boring coffee shops. The news paper told me "It's not Starbuck's, but it's filled with people that used to go there." so I figured I had better check the place out, and by that, I mean I was stuck there because my truck was getting a new windshield down the street and didnt have a choice. When my eyes quit rolling from the inspirational quotes plastered all over the bath tub sized tea cup in the center of the room, I noticed a nice spot by the fire and actually ended up deciding that I had found a really neat coffee shop. When you approach the place, all you really can see is a boring strip mall like building but when you cross over the faux bridge onto their dock like entrance you get a view of the artificially overflowing bucket that dumps into a fake stream that terminates at a contrived waterfall that empties into a large man made pond with a huge fountain jetting high enough to make you want for an umbrella. They have sculpted a decadently fake park like setting with some tables and nice chairs down by the water, Its all quite grandiose really. It makes me want to put on my dock shoes for high-tea and gossip water side with you as you shield yourself from the sun with a knock off vintage parasol from china. Love it. Why four stars instead of five? becuase so many collegiate types apparently love the tacky water features so much that I sometimes have to trouble finding a seat. Avoid peak hours.

Alright, I've been here a few times already, I should write a review. Luckily I went to Overflow again this afternoon and it did not disappoint. The coffee itself is alright, not the best I've had (a white mocha) but it's pretty good- they also do pull their own shots, contrary to another review on here. The staff is friendly and although it's kind of big, it still has a cozy feeling- a must for a coffee shop in my book. I decided to splurge today on a croissant breakfast sandwich, probably not work $5 but it was was tasty. The pastries were lacking in variety and number, so I passed on those. As for the noise level, there was a steady amount of customers but I was able to concentrate on my reading for class. Maybe this was due to it being spring break for the U of M, and also a Saturday.

Overflow just happens to be right across the street from where I work, so I generally patronize the cafe several times a week! The servers are friendly, there's a toasty fireplace for the winter and a refreshing outdoor fountain area for the summer. The food is pretty darn good as well- my only complaint is that it's a bit pricey ($7 for a sandwich, extra for chips???). I have to agree with Andrea R., the rice krispie treats are tasty frasty!

Although it is out of my neighborhood and the clientele is generally college aged, I really like this place. The coffee is great, I had a triple shot mocha. I went in about 10am and the place was pretty full. The decor is modern and fun, much better than the cookie cutter look of chain coffee shops. The staff was friendly and helpful. I see that they have a fairly diverse menu for food which is a nice thing to see. I did not get a chance to try any of it, but from what I could smell and see it looks good. Oh and the free wifi let me draft this review as I sipped my mocha. Stop by this place if your are in the neighborhood.

  • Patrick L.

I appreciate the tasty coffee, relatively late hours, internet, and abundance of space if i am feeling like getting away. The clientele is not very diverse, however, and as someone said below the inspirational statements are tacky. Compared to some of the great coffee shops in mpls this one doesn't stand out, but you can get a good cup of coffee and wifi at overflow.
