I don't hate Grumpy's but its not my first choice for a night out. Thursday's have one of the better Karoake selections around, but no specials, and be ready to wait. The food isn't bad, the burgers are okay, but I'd avoid the wings. Drinks are pricey, but the place has a more downtown than seven corners vibe anyway. Patio is nice, and there is a fire during winter months. Friendly staff when they're around, but it can be hard to get service.

Free comedy show on Wednesday at 8! It's in a really cool hallway part of the bar. So much fun you guys.

The jalepeno poppers were great and the price was reasonable. They had double darkhorse on draft (from Michigan) and they had My Bloody Valentine on the speaker system. What more could you want?

I have only been here a few times, but I like the atmosphere and location. They have parking, which is hard to come by downtown. Solid bar and I am sure I will be back again and have myself a bloody mary.

Grumpy's is close to my work so we frequent it a lot for both lunch and catching a beer after work. It's a team favorite as the greasy lunch is always tasty and the beer is reasonably priced. In the summer the back patio is nice and they have garbage cans with grass growing in them. The atmosphere as awesome because of the decor/events but also because there's such a wide range of customers!

this is one of my favorite bar and grills in the city. beer selection is pretty good; service is great; food is solid; price is good; location is great. i eat lunch here typically about once or twice a week. there have been weeks where it was every day. part of that is out of convenience, but mainly because they have good food for a good price. i love how they have good, homecooked, minnesotan meals. for instance, i'm eating today's special right now: pot roast w/ beef gravy, mashed potatoes w/ beef gravy, green bean casserole, and texas toast for $8. this is great. as for beer, they always have some bells and surly on tap. they also manage to get some other great beers now and then too. they recently had coffee bender from surly. mark and tye (i always know i'm in good company when these guys are working), i'm sorry i drank all the coffee bender. word on the street is that they'll possibly be carrying some lagunitas as well. a lot of people are excited for lagunitas because they're now distributing here from petaluma, california. as for me, i'll hold my tongue for right now because i haven't tried enough. i forget what other beers they have on tap. they have specials from monday to friday. monday and wednesday always have the same great special. monday: grilled cheese (add bacon and/or ham for $1), tomato bisque, and chips; i think this is $5.50 wednesday: 1/2 rack baby back ribs, coleslaw, and fries (i always substitute tots for the fries); $10 other favorites: french dip, cream cheese burger, mac n cheese bites, swedish meatballs, mini tacos, nachos, onion rings, buffalo wings, big assed breakfast sandwich

Oh Grumpy's..... We have had some good times. This is a fun bar and grill. There is always a mixed croud here. The food is actually really good here. I do reccoment the deep fried macaroni balls, they are amazing. It's nothing fancy but its not a crap hole either. Play some pool with your friends, have a couple beers, and enjoy the patio in the summer. Definatley check it out.

Grumpys is a staple for my office. Outside seating, great food, decent prices, and a good beer selection. The staff is great as well. I havent found a flaw yet.

  • Sondra M.

For a bar, the food is decent, but nothing spectacular. Their happy hour could be a better deal, too. Sometimes the drinks are kinda weak. But all in all, it's a fairly inoffensive place and karaoke can be fun there. Get the tots.

I think this Grumpy's (as opposed to the one in NE) has one of the best/most interesting mix of crowds in Mpls. Where else do suburban guys in Viking's jerseys mingle with 30s-something indie rockers and happy hour groups still in suits? And it seems to work . . . Definitely worth bringing any vegetarian/vegan friends here because they've got a great bar menu for them to choose from. Good drinks, enough space that you can almost always sit somewhere, and usually quiet enough to talk w/o being the creepiness of a too-quiet bar. One of my favorites. My lone complaint is that all the concrete makes this a cold place, both in temperature and atmosphere. Avoid the tables next to the windows on a cold night if you're prone to chills. . .

for a drink night, stop by! the staff is relaxed and the atmophere is chill. the waitress was so nice, i almost copped a slice of pizza luce from her!!

Grain Belt and good nachos equals solid bad. The only bad thing is the Tvs are old and crappy. The restrooms are a little odd too.

I had a decent time here the other night. My wife and I liked the beer selection and the food looked good although unhealthy. Old school atmosphere. Not quite what I expected but it had its charm. I will have to drop by again sometime and maybe try their specialty burgers. It's not a place I would go out of my way to visit though.

The Mohawks mix with the Mullets! Order a "Chocolate Cake" shot and get a basket of fries while either watching Desperate Housewife's or playing pool... or both!

I used to always stop in here for afterwork cocktails when I lived in Minneapolis and it was always very cool. For happy hour it isn't packed which is nice. For Vikings games this place is cool too, just get there early enough to grab a seat. They also have killer bloody marys!

  • Liz L.

Always great. Food, bar, service- it's all good. I've been coming here for years and it is consistently a great decision. It's not for you if you want sterile suburban atmosphere or a cheery teen that will forget half your order. You will get great drinks and great bar food. It's just the right amount of divey and always delivers on quality. The nachos and tater tots are unmatched!

We live right in the neighborhood and love this little dive-y spot for a couple of beers and appetizers. There is always a large selection of beers on tap (including a lot of local and regional favorites) and the food is bar fare done well. The nachos are HUGE. The quesadilla is really tasty as well. I've had a couple of sandwiches which were pretty good as well. The back patio is lovely on a warm summer day.

The Grumpys in Roseville was AMAZING, so I had really high hopes coming here. I was extremely let down. The waitress ignored us, and it took 10 minutes to get two drinks. The place was dark, dirty and clearly in need of some updating. After 20 minutes we finally got our food (a burger and a salad) and we couldn't even finish our meals. The chicken on the salad was lukewarm and dry (almost like it has been pre-cooked and then reheated for my meal) and the burger was disgusting. The fries were good, but there was nothing good enough to make up for the shit service and horrible food. Never going back!

I came here with my girlfriend before the July 4th fireworks to grab food to take over to our spot. It was our first time here. We called four hours ahead to pick up food. We arrived five minutes early and had to wait 15 minutes for the meal. The staff was very friendly and apologized for the wait. We picked up a quesadilla from the appetizer menu, she had the Chicken BLT wrap, and I ordered the Chicken Philly. We also ordered fries and tots. The quesadilla was great. Some restaurants try to short you on chicken or the size of the quesadilla but Grumpy's certainly did not. It was very tasty, especially with the generous salsa and sour cream cups provided. Well worth it. My Chicken Philly turned out to be the Roast Beef Philly, but thankfully I didn't mind. It was delicious in flavor and well seasoned. It was salty, but not quite too salty for my taste. I would definitely eat this again (I'd probably try the Chicken, but wouldn't be disappointed with the Roast Beef). The fries were nothing special, but still tasty and well cooked. My girlfriend enjoyed her Chicken BLT wrap. Although it was nothing special (and definitely not close to being as big as her head as the menu indicates), she liked the taste and took half home to eat the next day. The tater tots were very tasty. Although they weren't anything magical, they were definitely seasoned better than your average restaurant tots. In general: Grumpy's has tasty food, great value, and the tots are worth trying. Service was poor, but I would be willing to go back again.

Nothing but Grumpy the service here rocks!! well the one in downtown that's my spot! Its amazing even when its packed you seat yourself and the server always finds my lil old self all the way in back lol that's awesome usually when its packed in other places they don't notice but Grumpys they know! I love there burgers here all I get I have had the Garlic Burger mmmmmmm and I remember one time my dad order I think it was there version of the juicey lucy and the cheese was so stuffed in the meat it was oozing out that the chef in order to stop the ooozzz he put a French fry in the hole and built a mini bridge lol it was cute! I love this place! Great atmosphere too my parents also go here they stopped because my dad said its so good he might get a heart attack lol deff recommend this burger joint!

very casual, decent parking as well ordered the garlic bomb burger and the meatloaf plate. portion size is HUGE. the meatfloaf could have been enough for 3 very hungry people. If you like garlic (which I love) that burger is for you. garlic inside and out, very juicy. otherwise, a typical bar/grill that you would expect. good fatty food and beer

Stopped in this past weekend to satisfy one of those greasy burger itches. It certainly doesn't disappoint in that regard. To start, the location does have a private lot. For those that oft-wonder about downtown establishments and their parking, fret not with Grumpy's. The service was a little slow. Considering it's Saturday morning and I can count on on hand how many people are in the place, you'd think it could have been a bit faster to get our order placed. But, I get it, the server was busy with inventory stuff and schedule stuff (it appeared). For the food... Started with cheese curds because, well, why not when you're going off diet? Wasn't impressed with them in the least bit. Very heavy batter drown out the cheese flavor, which is very disappointing. I wasn't expecting tempura batter or anything, but, I'm not I'd like to at least taste the cheese portion of my curds... or the curds portion of the name? F it, either way the curds sucked. My burger, the garlic bomb burger, was fantastic. A solid, greasy mess of a burger filled with mozzarella and garlic. I've had a lot of burgers around these parts and I'd say this is a very good, underrated burger for the state. My only regret is getting no bacon on it (something I'll take to my grave now). Took my burger with tots because tots rule supreme in the burger companion realm. Will say, a very solid tot was served up. Not too salty at all, and well done on the crunch. A solid 3/5 for Grumpys.

I just moved downtown from the northern burbs. This bar makes me feel right at home. Great beer selection and great mix of people. I love coming here for their Firkin Fridays. Great beer and great food on a Friday really help kick off the weekend right!

Grumpy's Downtown is My Jam, plain and simple. The hot pastrami was my first meal there, and I've eaten virtually every item on the menu in the 2 years hence (while getting the pastrami at least once a month :-). The Cream Cheese burger is legendary and good, but admittedly brought me closer to a heart attack than I'm comfortable with. Their brunch menu is simply nuts. Breakfast nachos?! Are you kidding me?! Chorizo, scrambled eggs, deep fried homemade chips, succulent cheese sauce and fresh onions. . . a ridiculous amount of pleasure for any bachelor to endure. The spicy breakfast rolls, biscuits and eggs benny are also tops. The service is awesomesaucier and raw too. Sonja, Magpie, Mark, Tiff, Whitney, Ryan - real people with true, unadulterated class. Lastly, the best part: the music. The rock and roll soul of Minneapolis permeates the room, so many notes woven into the black paint. I've spent many an hour there saturated in independence and authenticity dripping from the hi-fi. My jam, indeeed. Love you Grump's. Taters gonna tate, TKO

After a very fun, yet booze filled, night in Minneapolis I woke up the next morning with a pretty nasty hangover. My coworkers and I went out to breakfast and I felt so ill I could barely touch my breakfast. It was rough. I went back to my hotel room and took a nap. A few hours later I awoke feeling much better and starving. Checked out of my hotel and met with a dear old college friend for a bite to eat before I left town. I had seen Grumpy's on Yelp earlier in the week so I suggested we go there. Perfect decision. Any remnant of a hangover I had was eradicated thanks to my first every Juicy Lucy. I long for that gooey, greasy, hot mess of burger every waking moment now. You've ruined me, Minneapolis! The burger was excellent. The tater tots on the side were fantastic. Plus it was CHEAP! I think it was about 10 bucks if memory serves. Not bad. Our waitress was friendly and adequately warned me for the molten hot cheese about to escape from my burger. The vibe is kind of divey but I love a dive so I liked it. A few hours later I boarded my plane, delightfully grease soaked in my pores, and feeling pretty darn good. Thanks, Grumpy's!

  • Meggan E.

Can't beat the divey vibe in here. Went in dressed up after we attended a Guthrie event and we got stared down by the regulars. Other than that, the atmosphere is regular dive bar with some t.v. This Grumpy's is bigger than the one in NE. I'm really writing because I need to start a list of 'best quesadillas' as my partner is on a quest to find the best ones in town. He loves them here and took me here during our first year of dating. I was a vegetarian at the time, and I enjoyed a hearty quesadilla with mock chicken. I believe my partner got good old chicken. These quesadillas are stuffed with filling and the tortilla is browned just right. A very good fix for when you have a craving. The 4-stars is because when my friends and I did walk-in to Grumpy's, we were hoping to do karaoke. However, the person running the machine that night did not allow us to take our turn though 5 of us out 8 in our group put in songs. It was not a busy night, a Monday I believe. Nor were any of us super drunk or unruly; again, it was a Monday night. This was two years ago so hopefully, someone else is running karaoke night.

I love this place so much, I celebrated my 30th birthday there. Why do I love Grumpy's downtown? Lemme tell ya in bullets, because I love bullets: - free HUGE parking lot - stiff, cheap drinks - events (monthly shows, art exhibits, fests like AMREP, and awesome things like Jewbilee on christmas eve ) - friendly servers and bartenders (they won't kiss your ass, but they are pretty awesome people...I mean...it IS called "Grumpy's") - good bar food! I've never had a bad experience with it. My go to: the sliders, with American cheese, grilled onion, tomato, and lettuce. Always good, never disappoints. - fun atmosphere for everyone! If you want to have a ruckus, rowdy time, you can (but don't be a jackass.)! If you want to have a chill night by the bar, you can! If you want to play pool or darts or pinball, you can! - conveniently located near the lightrail - great patio area Just good ol' 'merican fun!

Grumpy's. How delicious art thine fries. How supple is they beer. How raging is thous music. Must enjoy hip crowd and cold beer. I'm a dark beer guy and they have some great ones to try. Feels a bit like a slow 6th Street here. Had the Ruben the first time and loved it. Bout to try the cream cheese burger. Wish me luck.

Love me some Grumpy's. Pretty divey... Tons of space, pretty good bar food. Nothing super special, but definitely a place that I frequent.

  • Dawn G.

Grumpy's is the definition of a dive bar and it has yummy bar food at a decent price to match. Just don't expect good service. While the servers are friendly, you may not see them when another beer or the check is needed. If you do see them, they're huddled together at a table having a fun time like they're customers. But it's a dive bar and you're not here for awesome service; you're here for the good bar food and the fun atmosphere. You can't go wrong with their burgers (nearly a full-page of the menu is dedicated to burger options), tater tots, or other fried appetizers. Add some beer from their great selection and you have a winner meal. I also like that they serve breakfast. It's mostly the traditional items but they have a few fun and unusual options as well. If you like outdoor patios, Grumpy's has a large backyard for your bar-hopping pleasure. If indoor games are more your style, belly up to the pool tables or dart boards. Or just sit back and people-watch.

Stopped into Grumpy's for some drinks and tater tots. The interior space is huge, featuring a large bar and several divergent barroom games. We sat out back on the large patio. There was a band playing which we were not particularly into but stayed regardless of the sometimes inability to converse. We enjoyed the drinks and the tater tots were good but seemed fairly standard in their creation and presentation. Overall we had a good time.

Holy mother of comfort food. This place is great if you want some classic Midwest comfort food any time of the year. The Mac and cheese fried squares are phenomenal.

  • Maria C.

There is nothing like beer, a burger and tater tots from Grumpy's. Much more spacious than other popular burger joints in Minneapolis, with a much better bar and a fantastic jukebox. Wear your Thanksgiving pants...these burgers mean business.

    (4)
  • Michelle D.

Don't let the 3 stars fool you- this was a great burger. However, I wasn't blown away. It was nice to sit outside, but with people being allowed to smoke on the patio, it made eating there a bit uncomfortable. I had the garlic bomb burger, which was fantastic. My boyfriend had the Elvis burger- peanut butter and bacon- and really enjoyed it. We had the fried cheese curds to start, which were good, but really just a take on mozzarella sticks. Overall, if you're looking for a relaxed atmosphere and a bomb burger (get it), head over to Grumpy's.

I've been here once but had a great experience. Definitely divey like others have said. Trivia night is on Tuesday evenings and was so much fun. I think having teams of 3-4 are best; teams with 4+ people seem like they are more likely to win. Macaroni bites are good but have too much salt. Less salt would be better. Our server was super nice. Food seems pretty cheap, too. They have parking in the back, and the place is served by light rail and buses. If I'm back in town, I'll be going back to trivia night.

I love this bar, atmosphere and food and drinks are awesome and the staff is usually awesome, but my buddy and I went in for lunch and drinks and had a rude server named Monica. She was inattentive, rude, and we were constantly waiting on her for her checking on us. She may have been having a bad day, but my buddy and met her with politeness and no change in attitude. The bartender was awesome though.

Grumpy's Bar and Grill has everything you would need on any given night: great food (the Burgermeister is one of the best burgers in town, and it comes with a pint of beer), a great beer selection that includes a regular variety of cask-conditioned brews, pool tables (slightly angled to make for interesting games of billiards), dart boards (bullseye!), interesting people to look at and talk to if you are so inclined, great waitstaff...who remember you when you go there enough, and sometimes live music playing in the bar. Overall, a great destination to meet up with friends, take a date to, or fly solo since you are bound to meet someone interesting at the bar. Free parking is also a plus, as well as the proximity to other bars and restaurants on Washington Avenue should you want to bar crawl.

    (4)
  • Keith S.

Why is every bar that doesn't play Top 40 suddenly called a dive bar? So with that, I wouldn't call it a dive bar. It's just a bar that happens to have this going on for it: Reasonably priced drinks, especially given proximity to downtown. Free parking. Say what? Pool tables. Seating (booth/bar/table) Mix of all walks of life. Good variety of music. Frequently a DJ or live bands. Good bar food. This is the place for me on my way out of downtown that I stop at after I leave some stupid trendy bar that I didn't want to go to in the first place and get back to real life where people are relatively normal and aren't trying to impress anyone.

    (4)
  • Tiffany C.

I should preface that I am proudly NON-Minnesotan. Ppl rave about this place. Newsflash! If you leave your shit state and travel anywhere in the world you will find a generic college-esque type bar like this one. Okay, okay, nothing against college type bars, but this place reeked of stale booze that hadn't actually been cleaned, just pushed around w a moldy mop, for quite some time. I heard a few ppl mention how "aaaahmaaazing" their tots were. Again, MN ppl need to get out more. They're just friggin tater tots. Chalk this place up as yet another thing about MN that I don't understand.

Grumpy's is a cool Downtown hangout. As others have mentioned, it's a great place to grab a beer after a long night of skating at roller dome, or a great place to gather just about any night of the week. Who doesn't love free parking at a downtown bar?! I'm a fan of their excellent beer selection, tasty food, and TATER TOTS. OMG, YES, THE TATER TOTS. They are the stuff of legends, people, seriously. Groups of friends have gotten together here for numerous birthday celebrations, nights out on the town, sweet summer shindigs on their fab patio, or to play Rock Band. I love me some rock band. A key piece of information that all of Yelp is missing: Happy Hour runs from 3pm - 7pm on weekdays. It does tend to get a little cray cray on a weekend night, but that's to be expected of a place as fun as Grumpy's Downtown. Stop by to check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Grumpy's is as good as it gets in terms of bar atmosphere. The feeling there is not overly pretentious, nor overly divey, but just the right mix of the two: good, friendly service, quality affordable food & some nice drunktime activities! The bartenders are all super cool people & give good pours & it definitely feels like they're just there hanging out with you as opposed to just being there to work and serve you (although they are quite attentive, they don't have the "I wouldn't be here right now if I wasn't getting paid" attitude) Everything I've ever ordered in terms of food here has been delicious to say the least. If you're looking for a suggestion, you definitely can't go wrong with their reuben along with some tots. They mostly have typical bar food here (burgers, sandwiches, soup, fried things) but they do it all justice so I wouldn't hesitate to come here for a meal. They have pool tables, dart boards, big buck hunter hd & they always have events going on at night including karaoke and game nights where you can actually win prizes, so that's pretty cool too! Free parking & a nice little outdoor patio for when it's warm enough are both located in the back! seriously, I can't say enough good things about Grumpy's!

Grumpy's is the jam. First of all, every night in the little room, something is going on. Sometimes it's karaoke. Sometimes it's comedy. Sometimes it's... I don't know... but there's always something. The food is really good, too! Whether you like tots or burgers or tots AND burgers, they've got it cover, and it tastes great. Plus, there are pool tables with plenty of room around them so you aren't cramped or unable to make your desired shot! There are dart boards and such, too, for non-pool enthusiasts. The place is really big, so even when it's crowded, it's hard to feel cramped. And I've always had helpful and friendly servers and bartenders. Yep, it's got it all.. and it's centrally located, so it's great place to meet friends if you're all coming from different parts of the city.

Got kicked out immediately because we had been on a pedal pub. Nobody was acting crazy or even trying to order drinks. They certainly earn the name Grumpys. Might be a good dive for the cranky old man set.

I really want to love Grumpy's - it's within walking distance from our home and it has a neighborhood bar kind of feel to it, but alas I just don't care for it. The free parking is great - although we don't actually utilize it. The beer selection is pretty great, but when it comes to the food the place just falls short. Every single time I have gotten a burger there it has come dry and over cooked or in the case of me ordering medium rare - so undercooked I couldn't eat it. I don't think they use fresh meat, it certainly doesn't taste fresh - I would assume they are frozen patties. The appetizers are all right - nothing to write home about. We definitely hit Grumpy's up on late nights or if we just want to get a beer, but I have stopped order entrees because I think the food is so subpar.

Once on the patio, i said a bunch of crude things to some guy and girl and some dude overhearing me invited me onto their party bus. I drank as much as i could and threatened to fight a bunch of people but no one did anything because it was a bachelor party for the dude who invited me. we went to a bunch of places, including a strip club where i told the door guy not to let the party bus group in, but just me and another guy. We ended up back at Grumpy's and i stole a bunch of food off a table and when i got yelled at, promised to pay for it. Instead i threw the bill in the garbage. But they found me and made me pay for it. I tipped generously and they did not kick me out. nice folks. lot of tater tots. sometimes it is overrun by sports losers. The owner used to be in a killer punk band called Todlachen. Has Dark Horse beer on tap. pretty sure that tuesday morning i woke up in my car, somewhere in richfield.

Not bad for a lunch time choice. Wasn't sure how the visit was going to go at first. Walked in to see if we could just seat ourselves outside and the server muttered something and walked out. Luckily we didn't end up with her. She just seemed put off to have to wait on anyone and going through the motions. Our server was nice. Ordered the Reuben which was ok. Little too much thousand island on it which I forgot to ask to be held. Sauerkraut was alright. Between the sauerkraut and douse of dressing the bread was really soggy. Fries were ok. Friend had the fish sandwich special which she said was good. Nice patio area for seating. Not overwhelmed, but not dissapointed either.

I travel to MSP every week and this bar is near our hotel. It's a little dive down the street - nothing too pretentious. When we entered, the place reeked of stale beer, pretty typical of the dive bars I've been into (think Lyon's Pub) in MSP. We skipped the inside and headed right for the back. Service = very good - we were promptly attended to and the server was friendly Beer = excellent = pointed us to some good brews as they have many to choose from Food = above average = we had a couple of appetizers and sandwiches = standard bar fare and portions were large and satisfying. Price = outstanding = 4 of us with 2 appetizers, 2 drinks each, and 4 entrees got out of there for less than $100. I will be back.

I will always love Grumpy's. Back in my twenties, my friend and I would go here after a shift and just unwind. It was the perfect place to do it. Good drinks, some greasy bar food, and a relaxed atmosphere. I'm totally sentimental about the place.

1 star for food. 5 stars for the girl who was our server. Unfortunately, I don't know her name. Went here after a football game, which was maybe the reason for how remarkably poor the wings were. I understand the place was busy and the menu limited for game day, but ownership would have been embarrassed by the food placed on our table. Wings were old, pre cooked, reheated and lukewarm at best. I have never had trouble chewing through a piece of food as I did here. Thanks go to our waitress for offering to have the kitchen cook some fresh wings. She also comped a beer for the troubles. My friend's burger was ordered medium rare, but it came out brown throughout on a pretty lousy looking bun. Maybe Grumpy's is good on non-gamedays, but I wouldn't bother going back to find out.

FREE PARKING LOT. I could probably just stop this review there, because how awesome is free parking downtown? But there's more to say. Grumpy's is a bar's bar. They've got decent bar food (served 'til 1 a.m.) like tater tots, chili, sandwiches and fried appetizers of all shapes and sizes... the Cuban sandwich is actually pretty tasty too. They have vegetarian meat options and better-than-average burger toppings like guacamole, peanut butter and jalapeño bacon (not all at once) and a Juicy Lucy. Everything on the menu is under $10 except for the full rack of ribs. Their beer selection is right up there with the best of 'em. They have some good local stuff and rotating seasonal beers. Also, I always seem to come here on a Friday and see the Firkin Friday specials, which are often something really delicious---Rush River Oatmeal Chocolate Stout today! I believe the special starts at noon and then goes until the firkin's gone. There's entertainment if the drinks aren't enough to hold your attention. They've got a pool table, live music, trivia, the Drinky Drive-In and other fun events on the regular. If it's cold out, stay inside where it's dark and cozy. If it's warm out, go outside. Their back patio overlooks the gorgeous parking lot. As far as the staff goes, I've never experienced exceptionally good service here, nor have I experienced exceptionally bad service here. It's just plain service. The downtown Grumpy's is basically the antithesis of most downtown Minneapolis bars... meaning, you're probably not going to find T-Pain on the speakers and you will find cheese curds, jalapeño poppers and fried mac 'n' cheese on the menu. I enjoy this.

Went there last week, the bar set up is cool and the Jack & diets were strong. The dart boards and pool tables could be better laid out as they are forced into an area which means you'll be intruding on the games of others so if awkward physical contact is an issue for you there will be problems. The food is sub-par, mundane bar food, not that its bad, just your run of the mill breaded and fried bar fare. They do have erotic photo hunt which I think is the best bar game ever and considering there are essentially 3 places in the metro area that have it means I'll likely be back.

Grumpy's is unique in a few ways. This is both to its benefit and detriment. It certainly embodied the "divey" bar that has some food. Actually the menu is pretty well laid out in the grand scheme of things. Just don't be a sucker like me and try to eat vegetarian. This place has all sorts of meat sandwiches which I don't doubt are delicious, but their offerings for fresh food are few and far between. I know I am not the focus clientele for this joint, but I was a bit disappointed in the vegetarian options. They actually had a vegan chili, but it came to my table inexplicably covered in cheese and sour cream. I'm not saying this is terrible as I am not offended, I just think it helps give you an idea of what the clientele typically is. The Nachos were certainly massive and cheesy, the tater tots are somehow famous despite being blandly deep fried. Apparently sweet potato used to be an option so perhaps it is living on the fame of that faded glory. Bummer that is now not on the menu now. I did see an egg salad sandwich that looked absolutely vile, but I am a harsh critic on that particular matter. It looked overly-saucy and the thinly sliced egg made it look unappetizing. The bar is an island and approachable from all sides. There's pool, darts, and what appears to be an open mix comedy night which is rad! They were able to handle our large group of 25 people pretty easily and in a way that encouraged us to intermingle and move around instead of being locked into one behemoth table. The outdoor seating in the rear is a bit dreary during the day bit I'm sure is hopping and fun as the night progresses. The staff was very accommodating and made it easy on a group of our size. They were on the ball and didn't seem overwhelmed or stressed out by having a slew of people shouting orders at 'em. All in all not a bad place to have a dive bar experience. I think other places do it better and their touch tunes juke box is not accessible from smart phone so That's a small drawback, but noticeable since all of the other jukeboxes in the area pop up without issue.

Now the free parking was a pluss!! most places downtown i hate to go to because of parking.. I had the cuban.. it was not the best cuban i have had but it was eatable. The drinks selection was good as far as beer.. they were slumming it on the hard alcohol. The service was kinda slow . We went on last Thursday for this wildcat thing that i will give bad reviews as soon as i can locate them on here. The over all experience was great .. we had food inside and some drinks and they have a great outdoor area where you can have more drinks. I give this place a 4 because the hard alcohol selection was a bit too close to the bottom shelf. I definitely will go back again because of the free parking right outside.

I used to go to Grumpy's a lot. The food was great, its in a wonderful location downtown, and fun atmosphere. Then I was waited on at the bar to one of the worst waiter/bartender I've ever encountered. Maybe he was having a bad day, I dunno. He ignored us the entire night, and was surly to us when we asked for a refill. I'm one of those people that tips 20% no matter what, and if I'm wowed, I chip in more because working in a restaurant is hard work! Imagine my surprise when our bartender helped himself to the tune of twice what I had signed for. Stealing is stealing, guys. Don't care how great the place is.

The dark and drab atmosphere inside Grumpy's depresses me; I wouldn't say it makes me grumpy, but it does make me sad. All the colors are black or grey, the bartenders are not talkative (though the servers are friendly and attentive) and it's just generally not a bar I enjoy going to. It does have lots of space, though, and a pretty decent location with a fair amount of street parking nearby. People rave about the tater tots, but I could taste the "frozen" in them and got bored after three or four. Also, the kitchen is not forthcoming about ingredients in their food. For example, none of us have been able to determine whether there's honey in the BBQ sauce (for the mock duck sandwich) or if the breads/buns they use are completely vegan. They just wouldn't tell us anything. So the kitchen staff either didn't know or didn't want to say, which is both unusual and unacceptable. All in all, I'd rather go the hip, warm, modern and bright WXYZ Bar a few blocks away, which has more food options (including a separate vegan menu) and much better atmosphere.

Came across this place while walking in sub zero temps. I'm sure glad we did. The wait staff was very attentive and the food was excellent. I had the brewmiester myself and the burger was really good.

I love this bar! Great selection of food with several vegetarian options. Try to the jalapeno mozzarella sticks, they are awesome! Can't go wrong with a Juicy Lucy with a nice cold brew, either. Nice beer selection, if you want to try a microbrew/specialty beer on tap they will often give samples before you buy a whole glass. The bar staff is great, and the waitress staff varies a lot. I recommend sitting at the bar for the best service. There is also seating out back if the weather is nice. Watch out for Zombie Pub Crawl (early October) as this place is a mad house!

I went here for lunch and got a basic cheeseburger, the meat patty was rubbery, the bun was dry, the tomato was hard. The fries were a bit cold, unsalted and tasted thawed out. The service was fine, except she put my friend's soda on my bill. I'm now sitting in the office with a gurgling stomach and some bad gas. I won't be going back.

Great bar food, grumpy staff lives up to the name. Grumpy's is located pretty close to my office and is a regular lunchtime outing for my group. I've never left super happy with the service, and on at least two occasions was brought my food last (like 5 minutes after the rest of my party last). On one visit, after 5 minutes of waiting after watching the rest of my group chow down I sought out the waitress to ask about my food. She gave me a snooty remark along the lines of "You're not my only table" while rushing food out to another party. The chicken fingers are awesome, as is the burrito and I hear lots of good things about the grilled cheese. The tots are to die for (ask for them to be extra crispy). All in all Grumpy's is a great place to go if you don't have anywhere to be and are looking for some bar food. I recommend the Roseville location. It's staff and restaurant are much nicer!

Grumpy's is the definition of a dive bar, but it's a dive bar with a huge menu and great beer selection (lots of local and seasonal brews). Came here on a Saturday night and it was not busy at all, decor was very dive bar-y - dingy, dark, pool tables lining one-side of the room - lets just say Grumpy's doesn't try to hide what it truly is. That being said, the food was phenomenal. Now we're not talking braised pork belly with foie gras, but for a typical burgers and beers dive bar, this place does it right. I would even go so far as to say the burgers rival some of the more well known burger places around the TC's (Shamrocks/Nook, Matt's, etc.) One final thought, never EVER leave Grumpy's without getting the Tater Tots, they are always perfectly crunchy on the outside and well seasoned (maybe with a crack-like substance) - these things are legendary. TL;DR - Great burgers and beer selection, GET TOTS, charming dive bar atmosphere

Not for fancypants types, so I really like that I have this as an option in a largely gentrified downtown. It's a bit reminiscent to Grumpy's NE and thankfully just as far-removed from Grumpy's Roseville. It's on the darker side with a touch of brand new dive-ish feel and has a great selection of beers and a decent amount of food options. Downside is that on busy weekends the $15 cover is rather steep if you were just planning on randomly going there. It's definitely up there as one of the better downtown bars.

This was my ah-hell bar. Got very little money? Got very little compulsion to drive/bike further? Got a group of people with you who really can't decide? Got beer already in your stomach but need more? Got an empty stomach that with the full bladder is pushing you to the brink of grumpy behavior? Ah hell... better hit up Grumpy's for an American-sized plate of defrosted, re-purposed spuds, a little bit of grease fat, and a little more spunky-funky beer. It won't be great, but it'll do. I second all of the spit-shine suggestions. Grumpy's could definitely use a decorating overhaul. It's an incredibly large space, so lots more could be going on here. May I suggest a bicycle bar? Provide some indoor parking, sponsor a parade, etc. etc.

While I may not look like it, I'm actually a girl that enjoys a little real, hole in the wall bar atmosphere every once in a while. And Grumpy's seems to fill that need for that every once in a while enjoyment. It's the kind of bar where you feel like your feet could possibly start sticking to the floor, but you can play pool or darts without a bunch of frat boys yelling at the table next to you, you can actually have a conversation with the person you're out with and the wait staff is full of really, truly nice people. It's not somewhere that I'd be at every weekend, but a good place to change things up a bit.

Agh, I miss this place. It's great. You'll make great memories there with your friends. You'll make new friends. You'll drink a lot more than you expected, and bike home at 2am. Best karaoke ever. That's pretty much all I can say. Miss you guys. LA sucks!

I really like Grumpy's. Yes yes, my preference may be in part because I work a couple blocks away so subsequently frequent the place out of convenience, but I think they're just pretty solid. They always have a great beer selection, and their taps revolve on a consistent basis, so your choices are ever expanding. The bartenders definitely know their stuff and are happy to discuss their beers, so long as they aren't super busy. MN Mondays are indeed a great deal; at this location you can get any MN beers for half price until 11pm! (not sure if it begins at 5 or 7pm) On top of that, Firkin Fridays! The food is decent enough, and they serve it til 1am, so it's a nice option to have. I recommend the homemade soups, they do a really good job. One of my favorite aspects is their outdoor winter bum fire. Just because you don't smoke doesn't mean it can't be nice to step outside on a cold winter night and sip on your craft beer while warming by the fire. I've heard rumors of their hopes to use their two stages for frequent live music again, which would be great. I also really appreciate a staff that knows your name and knows your drink. I hate going to places where the staff is always changing and you don't get the opportunity to see a familiar face when you walk in the door.

After a full day of walking around Minneapolis, my friends and I decided to go to Grumpy's. A co-worker, a Minnesota native recommended Grumpy's, specifically for it's tots. As we are getting closer in senior citizen age, we went rather early, so the place was relatively empty. Our waitress was cordial and attentive. I ordered a beer and the Grumpy burger. The Grumpy burger is topped with chili and melted cheddar alongside those tots. I was quite hungry, but when I saw how much there was on the plate, I knew I had a battle ahead of me. The Grumpy burger was quite tasty, and the tots were seasoned well. (Even though I was thirsty rest of the night.) I definitely would like to thank my co-worker for the recommendation. I will definitely come back to Grumpy's if I'm in the area.

The prices are reasonable especially for downtown. The atmosphere even on a Thursday afternoon is bizarre and awesome at the same time. Good selection of local brews that went along nicely with my cajun chicken sandwich. Oh and even though it is an extra $2 or so to get tots...DO IT! Great bartenders as well...check this place out if you are in the area.

So we got here during a Vikings Game 10/2/2011 (Away game) and first you can't hear the game. Then we waited 30 Minutes for service, about 45 for our food. I just gave our waitress our card when the food arrived and didn't see her for 30 minutes. We watched 4 other tables get up and leave due to the service. Then the food we got was Mediocre and really lacked flavor. The male restroom was a joke! The door lock doesn't work and the toilet was overflowing! Not a dive...not really anything.

I may have to give Grumpys another try because after hearing about it from friends I gave it a try last weekend and was not impressed. I was told they had a great beer selection but most of the beers that were craft were beers that are really all over the city. I know beer changes so it could have just been a boring week for whats on tap. The bartenders were very friendly but when we moved to a table a server asked if we would mind closing out at the bar and starting a tab with her. We were more than happy to do so. I closed out my tab (which I think they double charged but I did not notice until after I left the bar so that was my mistake). But she never came back to check on us, we went to the bar and ordered more drinks and sat down 10 minutes later she came to clean the empties and looked a little peeved that we had drinks but it was not busy and she was nowhere in sight. Like I said beer selection was not great, if you like craft beers, especially Belgian ales I would suggest moving more north on Washington/Cedar, lots of different places offer more with friendlier service. They have all the local brews plus some beers that I have never heard of which are usually very tasty. I will give this place 2 stars for now and try again later.

Great service, fun movies, great patio, decent drink specials and rock band night! What more can a girl say?! No seriously, this place has parking, plenty of outdoor seating, great food and a fun environment. Make sure to add this to your downtown bar hopping scene!

this is the best place to start your weekends in minneapolis. if your weekends start on friday night, they have a fabulous beer selection - and do yourself a favor and sit at the bar. the bartenders are just friendly enough without being minnesota-kitsch, and they'll give you samples of any beer you are curious about. if your weekends start on saturday, then shut your face and get there for brunch and bloodies. i believe these to be the best bloodies in downtown. they get the job done, if you catch my drift (which, let's face it, you do), and they taste downright damned delicious. don't miss out on the big assed breakfast sandwich with jalapeno bacon, and holy-crap-order-the-cheesy-tator-tot-hashbrowns and thank me later.

I think it's really interesting that Grumpy's is listed as a dive bar... I mean, this isn't a classy, white tablecloth kind of place, but c'mon - dive bar? It has CLEAN bathroooms. Jeez. Anyways, I really dig Grumpy's - both the location on Washington Ave and - my favorite - the one in NE. Great beer selection - from local classics like Summit and Schell's to obscure microbeers from Kalamazoo, Portland and Colorado. Great bar food - excellent tater tots and great sandwiches. What more do you need? Minnesota Mondays maybe? Head to NE on Monday nights for half off MN tap beers and a playlist mixed by Kyle Matteson (@solace for all you Tweeters). It's a great deal, a great party and an all-around great bar. Downside: parking at the Washington Ave location is trouble. Try the parking lot in back, if you dare - but beware of parking in the wrong spot - many of the spots are for the nearby body shop - they'll tow you in a second.

meh. Went here for a work gathering with tons of fun people. We had about 5 tables worth of us on the patio. The server was super overwhelmed and acted like we were a nuisance just being there and racking up a big tab. We weren't needy - all we wanted was a few beers, some tater tots and the patio to celebrate the launch of a new website. As people arrived, most would wait upwards of 10 minutes for her to show up and be annoyed they were thirsty. On a good note the tater tots ruled.

Not bad. The outdoor smoking area looked nice, bonus for you smokers out there. The inside is spacious. The decor has formica tables, which makes it have a retro feel, yet at the same time is has some grime to it which gives it another sort of undetermined vibe all together. Not really anything too creative or special about the look of the place, definitely not a place I would go to based on the atmosphere alone. I saw a pretty good mix of people here, some punk kids, indie kids, biker dudes, douche bags that probably just live in the area, tattooed up girls with dyed black hair and red lipstick, old dudes in corduroy blazers that looked like washed up professors, older couples, younger couples, and people that were just getting a beer while they were on their way home for work. It was a hodge podgery of clientele, and I like that. The drinks were fairly priced. The staff was nice. I'd check it out again.

I went for happy hour which may be why I was less than impressed. I have been here many times over the years and I always leave thinking "that was ok". These days I want more than OK. The beer selection is very good. The wings are not. I shouldn't be eating them anyway, so it worked out. By the way the thriftydoofus specials are completely wrong. They are really $1 off taps and apps. Is there a happy hour section on Yelp? There should be.

I've read the reviews. I've had friends vouch. I wanted to like Grumpy's, I really did! But I didn't. The service was terribly slow for the number of people working. The food was mediocre, at best, especially the nachos. The one shining star was the sheer amount of food that was provided in each portion. I would not recommend the full order of tots, unless you are dining with a football team.

I was disappointed to discover that Saturday nights do not have karaoke, but rather have Rock Band. If I wanted to listen to douchey dudes sing terrible rock songs, I would have stayed home with my friends (har de har har). The Rock Band deejay (RBjay?) was very patient and had a ton of energy, and often volunteered to sing or play drums for groups missing their fourth person. In addition, all of Grumpy's smelled like beef jerky / dog food, which would have been OK if it weren't for the dog food part. It certainly did not make our tater tots and onion rings more appealing (though they were pretty good in spite of this). Our waitress was crap-tastic, and while I only left her a $1 tip, looking at my debit card statement I'm pretty sure she added $3 to that. If I wanted to tip you $4, I would have (and next time, why don't you try earning it, toots). All in all, I won't be coming back... though I would have considered attempting their regular karaoke if our terrible waitress hadn't sleazed me big time. I admit I'm an a-hole for only tipping $1, but I tip based on merit, and I really truly never do that (and I'm not just saying that). Having been a terrible waitress, I'm the first to recognize bad service, OK? Good luck if you try Grumpy's. I'm sticking with the Country Bar, and hopefully all my CB nay-saying friends will now agree with me.

Cute bar. Surprised I've never been to Grumpy's before. Street parking was easy to find though metered; FYI the lot behind the bar is reserved for some car repair place. It was pretty crowded on a Fri night but we eventually found a table in the side room (which smelled like a fireplace). There's a small stage in there and my friend said she'd like to come here for karaoke. I liked the graphic design of the menus. The whole place has a retro rock n roll look and feel. There's a couple pool tables and maybe some arcade games. Lots of beer choices. Food was ordered: mac & cheese bites (I didn't try them but they were a hit), pastrami sandwich, onion rings (huge), and tater tots (a "small" order fed like 5 people). The menu is pretty heavy on the grease. Our waitress was efficient , funny and did a great job splitting up our tab. I think I went to high school with her... I'd go to Grumpy's again for a chill night out, no doubt.

I ordered the juicy Lucy and it was a huge burger filled with cheese. It was enough for dinner with leftovers for the next day. The burgers come with chips. But you can substitute fries, onion rings etc. Our pitcher of beer came out to be $15 which i think was a little over priced for the beer that we ordered. it wasn't bad beer but not great. Cool atmosphere. Good service. Good burger and a good place to eat and get beer.

This is probably my least favorite bar in the city, despite the fact that I love its NE counterpart. It is a couple of blocks from the Metrodome, so has the opportunity to be a good sports bar, but it is not. It has a few old small televisions and a bad sound system. The place just looks ugly and is in dire need of a makeover. Maxwell's, down the block is infinitely better.

I'm not quite sure how to sum up my feelings for Grumpy's in a sentence or two. I really like the atmosphere because it so mixed that you can't NOT feel comfortable. The food is pretty good and the portions are big (the fried mac and cheese bites sound amazing but get pretty gross after just a few) and the music that they play is awesome. And no matter how big the group is, the waitresses will split your check for you without even asking OR acting like you're an asshole for creating the situation in the first place. Needless to say, they're all really nice. But, everything is not great at Grumpy's. The place is pretty cold because of all of the concrete. I kind of get the look they are going for, but everything is too new and shiny and so it all just looks pretty silly if you really think about it. The drinks I've ordered from the waitresses have been pretty weak, which became apparent the other night after I had consumed my weight in liquor and realized that I could drive a car and still pass for sober (well, probably.) The drinks from the bar are so strong that you could probably light your breath on fire after drinking one. Thumbs up to that. I'd still rather go to Grumpy's than to 95% of the bars in this city (and that alone is worth 4 stars.)

I've been here many times in the past but none recently until I brought my car to get serviced a few blocks away and thought I'd walk on over to eat and hang until the work was complete; it was pretty much the same place! The food was still damn good, I was recommended the chili but I decided on the American Burger w/ fries and had a couple of Bell's Oberon Ales and watched the Twins game (which was happening the stadium just a few blocks away) and had no problem being rushed while I nursed the the food & drink. It was just before peak hours so this is indicative of a 5-6pm experience.

  • Ramona H.

This is the place we always go before Twins games. I don't think I'd come here any other time, but it's not too bad of a place to drink before a game. Gerneal sorts of bar food, pretty good beer selection, cool atmosphere. Really fills up before games (and other Dome events I'm assuming) but I've never had a big problem finding a place to sit. Funny vintage-ish decor and ok service. Don't come here expecting something fantasic, but it's pretty great for what it is.

Craving some deep-fried macaroni and cheese and a Crispin on tap?? Then you have to go to Grumpy's! The waitstaff is cool, the place is clean and approachable, and the vibe is chill; the sort of place you could spend a a cold winter night enjoying a few beverages and noshing on delicious pub food. I actually landed at Grumpy's for a graduation party (they have a fabulous private side room that you can reserve for a private event) and we enjoyed several pitchers of delicious beer and baskets of appetizers (tater tots and chicken wings). A fabulous way to spend a Friday evening.

Decent selection of beer on tap and a nifty happy hour. If you are headed for Seven Corners, consider stopping here instead, unless you're going to Town Hall. (And the food is better than at Town Hall, so definitely stay if you're hungry). Three pool tables which are often in use - get in line! And, smart idea, Grumpy's - they have a private room for parties and special events, complete with a stage and everything. Something to consider for you party planners. The kooky back deck is nice in warm weather and makes you forget that you're sitting on Washington Ave (because you aren't - you're in the parking lot!). It's one of those bars where you really can watch TV - be it Twins or primetime soaps. Not for every night, but sometimes you just want to watch the game, you know? Parents: They have a kids menu!

Though I'm not much of a bar patron these days, I will, on occasion go and grab a Kaliber and some grub at Grumpy's. It is the best place to go for karaoke and after a Sporting event at the Metrodome. You can't beat having Missy in the kitchen, Paddy, Timmy, Mark, and Charlie behind the bar, and pool tables, darts, and even sometimes punk or garage rock shows! Good food, fun, lively atmosphere, great music, overall, just a cool fucking bar!

  • Brian M.

This is Americas answer to the tavern. Good bar grub and solid Beer selection. The tots are, seriously, the best you'll probably ever taste. Come in the off season; it's a little packed during Twins and Vikings games. Tip: get the Burgermiester. It's a awesome burger and you can get a great draft for an extra $2.

My husband and I stop by here for lunch as it is easy to get in and out as they have a parking lot in the back. I think they menu is varied enough that everyone can find something to order. I have tried the Santa Fe Wrap, Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and the Italian Sandwich and have enjoyed them all. I especially like that you can substitute fries for Tator Tots:)

Stopped in after Monster Truck mania on Saturday for some karaoke action, only to discover that Rock Band displaces karaoke on Saturday nights. No worries, we rocked out Pretty Fly for White Guy, Dead On Arrival and Hungry Like the Wolf. We did not fit in amongst the classic rockers who preferred The Who and Rush. As much as I wanna like this place, there were serious issues that would keep me from coming back: Terrible service, overly greasy food, and a limited selection of songs. And the place smelled like smoky garbage. I could be talked into a return visit for actual karaoke but I'm pretty sure none of the friends who were with me ever want to step foot inside this place again.

Their tater tots are ahhh-mazing. They remind me of the Potato Olés from Taco Johns, but BETTER...seriously. It's the perfect beer food to share with your friends. Haven't had a bad experience here yet, so I'll be coming back next time for karaoke!

While visiting a friend in the cities, I suggested Grumpy's as a neutral meeting ground. He jumped at the chance, and now I know why. I got there early and grabbed a spot at the bar. I didn't move from the spot for four hours, and was well taken care of by the barstaff the entire time. A Thursday night, the place was quiet, but the guys still went out of their way to make sure I was doing fine. Very friendly, but know when to give you some space, too (I got about 50 uninterrupted pages into my novel before my friend showed up). Beer selection is promising--a few different Surly concoctions and other local brews on tap. I missed happy hour, but would've gladly drank more if I wasn't DD for the night. The guys behind the bar weren't shy about making beer recommendations, and they turned me in the right direction. Food is above-average bar fare. I ordered some chicken fingers for my buddy and I to share, and had a hard time not hogging them all to myself; the barbeque sauce and honey mustard both kept me wanting more. For dinner, I decided to keep my reservations at the door and ordered the cream cheese burger. I'd recommend flavor fans do the same; the burger was prime, a tasty mix of sweet and savory. I noticed a sign for Geeks Who Drink trivia on Tuesdays...locals, take heed! This is one of Denver's major pop culture exports, and a lot of fun. Grumpy's seems like the perfect setting for GWD, and it made me glad to see another working class bar embrace the idea. If you're looking for an innocuous pub to grab a brew and maybe a burger just outside of downtown Minneapolis, keep Grumpy's in mind.

I just moved in down the street from Grumpy's bar and grill. Having just lived in Plymouth for 2 years, I was happy to see bars and restaurants within a few blocks of my new place that weren't Ruby Tuesday's, Jakes, or some other crappy chain that most people in the Midwest just cannot get enough of. We ventured out to Grumpy's on a cold night to get away from our troubles. We sat at the bar and had a few drinks and some dinner. I had the Clubhouse sandwich. The bacon on the sandwich was great. My girlfriend had the French Dip which she enjoyed as well. My only complaint was that we ordered the "State Fair" cheese curds but they tasted more like small mozzarella sticks instead of the delicious, lightly breaded treats that can be had at the fair. By the end of our meal, the server and the bartender were BSing with us and the meal ended well. The staff seemed pretty nice considering they were pretty busy and it was still happy hour. I am looking forward to spending many nights here in the future. What a good way to start of my first weekend in my new neighborhood.

I came to visit Minneapolis and was at the Mill CIty Museum when I was given the recommendation to eat here. I showed up at 5, right at the start of happy hour. The bartender and the server, Kelly, were super cool! Those ^$#**$@ tater tots were sooooo good! Our meals were such huge portions that I swear they gave the kitchen away. And the beer was nice, cold, and cheap. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that my napkins weren't lined with gold. I'm have made a solemn oath to always come back every time I return to Minneapolis.

Not so far of a stray from my normal stomping grounds, I like to show my face at Grumpy's once in a while. They have a good beer selection. Not anything you can't find at another beer bar, but depending on your location, it may be a shorter trip. For me it is shorter and well worth the walk or ride. The atmosphere is dark and hipster, smattered with beer signs. If you don't bike or walk there, wear dark rimmed glasses or black shirts and pants, you are in the minority. They do have a couple of pool tables and video games to suit the nearby college crowd. Food is good and experimental bar grub. My favorite is the Elvis Burger complete with peanut butter (don't knock it until you try it). They also have a burger with cream cheese. As I was told by our server last time, "You will love both, but they will put you to sleep." Nacho's are always a good app. Service is generally poor from the get-go. It takes a while to get your first drink, but after they realize you are human and have money, you will be okay for the duration of your stay. I will return, not to be blown away, but because it is good and a change of pace. Give it a shot and you decide.

Why I love Grumpy's: Adult Spelling Bee. The group that puts on the Adult Spelling Bee at Grumpy's every 3rd weekend of the month used to be at 331 Club, and they've been here for the last 6 months or so. If you're up for a little nerdiness, a little snarkiness, and a LOT of beer, then check out the spelling bee. They have themed rounds, beginning with the "no speller left behind" round, where there are only four letter words, and also including the "stupid human tricks" round, the underwear round, and the naughty word round. Also, Grumpy's has great food. Nothing too out of the ordinary, unless you count deep fried mac and cheese. But I just won 3rd place at the last spelling bee (nerd alert) so now I have a $10 gift certificate to explore the menu a little more.

I do like Grumpy's downtown. They have that dive feel. It's very retro. Their food is good. They have outdoor space, free parking, and are within walking distance of the Metrodome so it's a great place for before and after games. The service is also appropriately "grumpy." Which, can be fun, but can also lead to disappointments. The last time I was there, I ordered the Burgermeister, which says it comes with a tap beer - in the description of the burger. I asked about it and the waitress says, very rudely "we're not doing that anymore." Ok... And I'm lucky I checked the bill, because they charged me as if I had gotten a beer with it. They also brought me fries instead of tots, but then brought me an order of tots to make up for it, which was nice (even though they acted like it was a huge inconvenience - I didn't even specifically ask for them, I just mentioned I had ordered tots). On a side note, get the tots. They are excellent. It's hard to tell if the attitude is part of the vibe of the place, or if it's just generally like that. Decent food, decent location, good vibe. If I'm in the area, Grumpy's is my choice, but I don't tend to seek it out.

I am confused. I am baffled. Why? Because I see people foolishly waiting every weekend at the Triple Rock or Victors, when Grumpy's is the place you should be heading for delicious weekend brunch! Grumpy's has an UNBELIEVABLE brunch menu on the weekend's. I have never had a hang over cured so quickly then by this bar on a Sunday morning. Let me break it down for you.... First, the service is awesome. The wait staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. Second, and most important, the food is large and in charge! I get the breakfast nachos, and they are fantastic. Homemade tortilla chips, eggs, black beans, corn, two different types of breakfast meat, topped with queso! I gluttonously pair this with cheesy home-fries! It is gut bustingly good! Third, the Bloody Mary's are proper! You pretty much get a vegetable garden on the top of your glass! I have been going here almost every Sunday for the past month. Unfortunately this means two things. I have been hung over a little too much, and winter weight is definitely going to be unavoidable.

This place is alright...I think I only gave it 3 stars because I had a huge initial disappointment. It was mostly my fault but I saw on yelp that they had hotdish happy hour on Tuesdays...well that is only the northeast locations, so immediately I was bummed and so were my fellow diners. The second fault was that my Stella was really skunky, luckily the waitress and bartender were very nice and replaced the keg and brought me a new one. On a good note the tater tots are awesome! Order a half order and ask for them extra crispy! You will not be disappointed! Overall an okay experience, I think I just love Maxwell's down the street so much that Grumpy's is getting an average review.
