We searched for "Chinese" on Yelp and this came up. Having lived within about 5 miles for many years, we still had never tried this place. Overall we were very impressed. We started with steamed dumplings; both the dumplings and the accompanying sauce tasted fresh, and both had their own robust flavor and texture. Then we ordered beef with snow peas, sesame chicken, and beef fried rice. All three of these were incredibly delicious. The peas and other vegetables in the beef sauce were completely fresh, the chicken breading was light, fresh, and tasty in its own way, and the fried rice was some of the best we have tried in a long time. Presentation and tableware are basic and no-frills except, in my opinion, for how the entrees and rice are served. Each entree and order of rice is served on a modestly pedestaled circular dish -- sort of a cake plate with a shallow bowl in the middle. I like it because it puts all the focus on the food, which at this place is where it belongs. Our server was friendly. Other aspects, such as decor and ambience, are basic just as one would expect in a typical Chinese restaurant. Apparently this place has been around a long time, but we could not tell that on our first visit inside -- they had just completed a top to bottom re-decorating of the dining room. Again -- the decor is simple in that Chinese restaurant way, but the dining room is very fresh, clean, and well-lit. For only $30 (including pops) we ate very well and still had leftovers to bring home. We plan to return here often in the future. By the way, the dining room seats a total of about 24 to 28. On this visit the only other party dining in was a foursome. They were eating egg foo yung and sweet/sour chicken, and they seemed like they really enjoyed it.

I've stared at this place from inside Buster's many times, and today my curiosity got the best of me. I walked in around lunchtime, it was pretty quiet, save for the loud yelling coming from the back room. I had to knock on the kitchen door to get the owners attention, but he was so adorable I forgave him. I ordered the Veg Lo Mien, and in 5 minutes it was done and completely awesome! One of my favorite things is finding authentic Chinese food ... and this place was great.

I had the kung pao chicken and fried potstickers via takeout. Yeah, the inside of the place is a bit dingy and it doesn't seem like they expect customers to eat there. I had relatively high hopes for Bill's. Overall, it was certainly better than places like Hop Wong and China Wok (Syndicate style). It had more subtle flavors than the stuff at Crystal Garden. The chicken wasn't the best cuts, but it was OK. There were enough peanuts and the veggies seemed fresh. I asked for it hot and spicy but it was neither, as per usual with many Chinese restaurants in Minnesota. The fried potstickers were kind of squishy and I wasn't sure what all was put in them. I prefer potstickers to have less juice in them, fewer air pockets, and more filling. These were very loose and kind of weird. The 'skin' on them was very thin. Bill's was cheap eats, though, and I like that you can get the entrees in small sizes. I would consider it again because it's convenient. I wouldn't trust any reviews above three stars, however.

I first ate at this place because I thought the name was hilarious. Who is Bill and where is his garden hidden in this dismal looking storefront? No matter, because Bill had the last laugh, giving me my new favorite Chinese restaurant ever. I usually order the shrimp fried rice and pork wontons, both some of the best I've ever eaten. Sesame chicken is delicious as well.. actually everything is delicious. Go to Bill's!! Word of warning, the food takes quite a bit of time to come out so call ahead.

I drove by and laughed at the name for years, shamefully. Finally tried the food when I moved into the area and everything I've had is fantastic: Orange chicken, fried rice, egg foo young. It tastes fresher than any other chinese restaurant I've eaten at. Great value.

We had a "groupon" for Bills Garden so we ventured over to try it out. We ordered beef and broccoli and the house fried rice. This was the worst Chinese food I've ever tasted in my life. We took one bite of each and all of it went in the trash. I don't know if they were just having a bad day or what, but we will not be visiting again.

It's our "go to" Chinese place. Great lunch specials. Large portions. Love the LoMein "spicy". Plan on waiting even if you call ahead and eating in...not so much.

There is NOTHING gourmet about this place! LOL! But it is quite decent 'american chinese food.' The place is TOTALLY ghetto! It would be best if you could ask someone else to pick up your food for you since the food is actually good. With all its drawbacks I still give it a 4 'cause the shrimp fried rice is fabulous and the sweet and sour chicken is GREAT. Stick to the standard fare here and you should be good. Oh yeah! and TOTALLY agree with the other reviewer who said no matter how early you call, expect to wait at least 15 minutes when you arrive to pick up... HEY! at least you know it's freshly made...

A friend took me to Bill's Garden a few months ago. This is by far my favorite place to get Americanized Chinese food. It has your typical syndicate offerings, general tso's, sesame chicken, cream cheese wontons... But man it is so much better than the average syndicate chinese restaurant. Go for the sesame chicken here. It has big chunks of juicy white meat chicken that is almost like tempura battered until crispy. Unlike other Chinese places the sauce is NOT an overly sweet corn starch based sauce. Its more like a thin sweet and sour sauce, but sadly if you ask for it hot and spicy, you will not get it that way. I don't know why but every time I ask it doesn't happen. The general tso's chicken is also different from a regular chinese restaurant's offering. But not for the better. The sauce is really good but the chicken is just dry and tough. The cream cheese wontons are small but you get 10 with and order and they're pretty tasty. The chicken wings are ok, super crispy but just ok. Now for the best part of Bill's offerings... The FRIED RICE is absolutely amazing . The best fried rice I have ever had and I know some good fried rice. Its wok fried until really dark and almost crispy? But still very tender. When you picture fried rice, the image of Bill's should come to mind. You just gotta try it for yourself to really understand what I'm talkin about.

I know, the name itself conjures up soggy, Americanized, tasteless 'Chinese' food. But don't be fooled. Although, it is definitely Americanized, it's one of my favorites. Bill himself is almost always there, short and abrupt, but a good guy. (hint: complement his potstickers - he takes great pride in them, as he should). I suggest take-out, not a great place to eat-in. And no matter how early you call in, you will definitely have to wait at least 15 minutes when you come to pick up your food cause he makes it fresh and hot. I'm sure the stuff is loaded with MSG, but his house-special chicken is excellent - get it spicy. I'm pretty picky about meat, which is part of why I like this place so much - it's always quality. Go get some - you'll like it.

Had to stop at A baker's Wife for my Nativity pumpkin pies. I was parked in front here, and decided to put my order in first because I read a review about the wait. My son is a beef lo mein fiend, and I try to get him some from different places because he tends to stay in one bag. It only comes in large, thank God, cause it's not usually my thing, this stuff smelled so good I was digging in. It was great and the beef was tender and plentiful. I got egg rolls, and those were better than most. A great take out spot for this tasty little corner of Mpls.

Best Cream Cheese Wontons In Town Hands Down. As said before always arrive 10 minutes after they tell you and your food will just be getting bagged up and ready to go. Also bring cash for the variety of authentic chinese figurines for purchase.

Bill's Garden is one of my favorite places in Minneapolis to get beef fried rice. Tastes great, however I don't care for the dining atmosphere inside. Kinda worn out with some kind of grease smell engrained in the space. Doesn't appear to be a dirty operation though so as long as you only order takeout, it at least in my opinion doesn't matter. I've wen't here for years since this was a place my great aunt and uncle frequented. From what I've heard Bill was the head chef at the legendary Nankin Restaraunt in Downtown Minneapolis which is one of the yesteryear places you'll hear most Twin City old tymers describe as one of the best there was. I vaguely remember the huge Nankin neon on Hennepin and 7th Downtown where Fogo de Chao is now. It was such an important Downtown institution that when the whole block was flattened for the City Center back in the 70's the Nankin was packed up and reinstalled inside it. Unfortunately the City Center just isn't that attractive and the Nankin closed, nothing remains of it that I'm aware of. Messing with landmarks just isn't a good idea, especially when you consider that someone who is proposing to tear down an amazing place somehow thinks they have good tastes. I've just never been convinced that those kinds of people know how or can improve anything. They usually dont! Fortunately Bill keeps some of that great Chinese cooking know how alive for us to enjoy. Wish it was served in more of a Nankin setting though, that place looks like it had a breathtaking atmosphere. Maybe Bill should try to recreate it in some way.

I've lived in south Minneapolis for 40+ years and I've recently learned that no matter how good you think you know your neighborhood, there's still more things to be discovered! And Bill's Garden is one of them! Bill's facade is rather plain but humble appearance gives way to the most tasty and delicious Szechuan Chinese food I have had recently and here it is right under my nose at Bill's Garden. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE! GO THERE NOW! Bill personally prepares the food and it is AWESOME!

There must be something wrong with me. I am the only one who doesn't like this place. Sorry guys. The egg rolls tasted like they were microwaved and the Cashew Chicken was bland and the chicken wasn't good. Sauce tasted funny too. However, the Egg Drop soup was pretty decent. They actually call it Egg Fluff soup, so it was a little different from standard egg drop, almost a little spicy. Interior is dumpy.

It's not a posh place with fancy lights and table cloth dining but it does have amazing food and friendly service. I've been going to Bill's for, well, I want to say at least 20 years. I'm a creature of habit and usually order the lunch combo of chicken chow mien with fried rice and chicken wings. I'll eat it all and be way too full with their big servings. Sometimes I don't feel I'm paying enough for such great food. They really are affordable. Bill's will always be my favorite hole in the wall Chinese restaurant....always.

This is my go-to neighborhood Chinese food spot. The first time I showed up, I didn't have high expectations for anything better than standard food-court Chinese fare. I am lucky that I was so wrong! The first time I ordered a lunch sesame chicken special that came with fried rice and cream cheese wontons. I thought the sesame chicken would be like I would get from Panda Express: decent enough and a quick bite grab on the go. Not at all! It was lightly fried and somehow delicate? How is that possible? The fried rice was really good too and not heavy. I wish it had some more veggies in it since i think that would make it a little more... fresh? Each time I go there, I imagine that Bill thinks I am really really hungry. The portions are HUGE. The last time I was there I ordered a lunch special and a side of egg fu yung and ate it for 6 meals. Seriously. I'm so happy to have such good food in my neighborhood that's not only quick, and decently priced, but so so so tasty. They are currently remodeling and I can't wait to see what it looks like when they're all done. Thanks, Bill!

Oh, Bills. How I want to like you. I've been here a handful of times, and each time leave disappointed. I live down the street from the place, yet find myself driving to other places when I have a hankering for Chinese food. Service: Slow. If they say 15 minutes, they really mean 30 min. Atmosphere: I've only seen a handful of people eating inside in the 8 months I've lived nearby. It's truly a take out place. Food: Try the fried rice. It's actually pretty good. Everything else? Not so much. The sesame chicken sauce tasted like ketchup. The meat was overcooked and didn't seem fresh. Overall, not good. But not horrible. Service and atmosphere make the overall rating a 2. Sorry, Bill. I won't be back. Even though you're down the street.

All of the other reviews are pretty spot on with their observations and opinions. I completely agree. The interior leaves much to be desired, but if the food is good who cares? In my experience, most of the hole in the walls have the best food. Chairs in the waiting area are beat up and torn. Decor is non existent, but it was still pretty full with regulars. Ordered the house special fried rice; beef, chicken and shrimp. Very good. Not greasy at all and rice is light and fluffy. I appreciate not getting a big box of grease like other places and it was filled to the brim and then some. Huge portion. Egg rolls almost seemed like they were baked. Not greasy at all either. Crunchy and well stuffed. Will certainly return. I wish I could have taken a menu, but they were out. Service was good and staff was polite.

First, I want say that this was one of my favorite fast food Chinese restaurants in the Twin Cities. It was the only one that had food that tasted different. Knowing that they are the slowest Chinese restaurant in the Twin Cities I always called well in advance. I hate that they put a "vegetable garden" in the Beef and Broccoli so I always ask for an order with just Beef and Broccoli. I called my order in and when my wife went to pick it up, she had to wait many minutes before anyone of the (3) workers would wait on her and after being ignored for so long, she asked one of the young men who had gotten so board he had started sweeping, "WHAT AM I DOING WRONG THAT YOU ALL WILL NOT WAIT ON ME!" Finally, Billl (the owner) said that her food was almost ready and immediately opens the kitchen door and grabs our order and gives it to my wife. As soon as my wife gets in the car she pulls a wing out that was cold. Usually, Chinese food remains hot for a while. Also, they still put a "vegetable garden" in my beef and broccoli! My advice for you is to bring a bullhorn and check your order before you leave! I refuse to pay for horrible customer service and incorrectly prepared orders! Back to the "cookie cutter Chinese" restaurants! "Fresh Wok I'll have a number 69!"

Chinese take out should be quick and easy, right? Wrong! We went to Bill's, ordered some basic items off the menu, paid for them and then waited for our order...for almost an hour. I finally convinced my husband that we should just leave without the food. Well right about then our order was ready. To add insult to injury, this was lousy chinese food. I have had better out of a can. Save yourself some time and aggravation and go somewhere else.

Tried the place for the first time. Told the lady who works there that it was our first time there and she didn't even ask us if we wanted to dine in. She showed us the menu and we ordered thinking that was what we had to do before we dine in but that wasn't the case. Ordered 2 lunch combos. Overall, the food was OK. Chicken wings and lemon chicken have a hint of mini donut flavor; a bit sweet. Not too fond of that. Service was OK. Probably won't go back.

If you're looking for better quality food than Hop Wong, Ming's, Crystal Palace, China Wok or the Teppanyaki Grill, well, keep looking. Despite the brief and pleasant customer service interaction I had picking up my take-out, there was nothing to distinguish the hostess-recommended "sesame chicken" from any other reddish syrup-soaked, grease-dripping chicken and white rice combination from countless other Sysco-based Asian cuisines. Not even a sprinkle of sesame seed. Nor did the appetizer sampler with wontons, pork, chicken wings and an eggroll show any evidence of love or art in Bill's food. Be forewarned: Use of "Garden," "Chinese," and "Gourmet" are false advertising. I wonder if there's even a "Bill."

I have been coming to Bill's Garden for years. I have always gotten the sesame chicken lunch special. It comes with chicken fried rice and cream cheese wontons. This is my favorite chinese restaurant. It's not fancy or pretentious, it's just good food for a reasonable price. The best part is that the chicken is white meat and large pieces, it's not that typical small chunks of dark mystery meat that most chinese places serve. Bill sometimes can be crabby and take a while to get your food ready, so make sure to call in your order 15-20 minutes ahead of time if you're in a rush.

I wanted to love this place, I really did, but it's just okay. After all the four and five star reviews I was expecting amazing food, but the experience didn't live up to the hype. First of all, this business has been renovated inside. Lots of previous reviews stated that this place was a dump but it's had a recent face lift with new paint, etc. It's still not fancy inside, but it's at least clean and presentable looking. They said the reno finished about October 2012. Now the food. My husband and I ordered kung pao chicken, fried rice, and sesame chicken with the cream cheese wontons after all the rave reviews here about the last two items. Both were ordered medium spiciness. We got the food home and discovered that the sesame chicken is sweet and sour chicken with sesame seeds in the sauce. It's breaded and fried exactly the same way as sweet and sour chicken with the same thick breading. The sweet and sour/sesame chicken sauce comes on the side and smells strongly of ketchup. I know that ketchup is an ingredient, but I've never had a sauce that smelled so strongly of it before. They must make up for it with extra vinegar because the sauce is tangier than others I've had also... And the medium spice? Nonexistent. The pieces of chicken were large and not tough or overcooked and wouldn't have been a disappointment had I ordered sweet and sour chicken. The cream cheese wontons were good after we microwaved them because when we got then home (we live less than two miles from this place so it wasn't a long drive) they were stone cold. On high notes were the kung pao chicken and the fried rice. The rice was well flavored and not insanely greasy or heavy. The kung pao chicken had a good ratio of veggies and peanuts, the sauce well made, and the medium spice was spot on. Of the two chicken dishes, this is definitely the better. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. The portions are enormous. Enough to feed two adults for three meals each, easily. All in all? We'll go back. It' still better than most of the mediocre Chinese food that's available in South Minneapolis. Skip the sesame chicken and head for dishes that feature a meat/veggie/sauce theme rather than fried dishes unless sweet and sour chicken is on your mind. Definitely get the fried rice. It's the best we've ordered so far. Give this place a shot. Just don't expect to be blown away.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes.
