What a pleasant find 4 ended up being. On a return trip from South Dakota, we ended up near Mankato around 7:00pm and used Yelp to find a place to eat. Based on an earlier review of their Lobster Bisque, we decided to stop for dinner. We will plan future trips, so we are near Mankato for dinner. The Lobster Bisque was simply the best - we shared a bowl. My dish, bogili was a spicy dish that delivered on Asian flavors. The baked penne, my husband's choice, had a zesty sausage that complimented the flavorful sauce. Our server. Allie, was a gem. She knew the menu & the history of the restaurant (we are geeks for that intel). A must place to dine when in Mankato.

The food is decent, which is high praise from an ex-pat San Franciscan. I had the gouda burger. At first the BBC saucecwasvoverwhelming, then it was well balanced, then there was not enough. Desert was bread pudding with vanilla bean gelato (my substitution). The bread was dry, but that's standard for bread pudding. The gelato was nummy. The service wad good. I don't drink alcohol which y urns me into a dreaded water drinker most places. The water was good but could do with less ice ending up in the glass. Music has been mid-nineties folk rock, which has been neither distracting nor annoying. We'll be eating here again.

We have eaten several times at Number 4 over the last 3 years. Atmosphere: Classy, modern yet warm and inviting. Dark interior with high end lighting create a very cozy yet chic atmosphere. The place is sort of like eye candy, its nice just to look around, very beautiful. Don't think I've ever said this about a restaurant before :) Also good for late night and if you just want dessert. Most places in kato are dead after 9 but this place will still be going strong. Parking: somewhat limited street parking. There is a lot in back but many spots are reserved. Seating: You can make reservations, but we never had, can't remember waiting. If you arrive between 6 and 8 Fri or Sat plan to spend some time at the lovely bar, you may wait a bit but not long. Any other time, would be surprised if you wait. Bar: Friendly, attentive bartenders. Nice selction of beers on tap and great wine selection. High end wine glasses make for an even better wine drinking experience. Not the most generous pours but not bad. Mixed drinks are fabulous and always well done but again, perhaps small in volume. Relatively short pours for drinks are my only criticism. Food: My husband and I have tried many, many dishes and have never once been disappointed, including: duck, lamb, pasta, sandwiches and my old favorite which is no longer on the menu (how sad!) the rosemary walleye :( I have a hard time going back to number 4 since this was removed, even though all the food is great, I long for that dish. Desserts are outstanding - try anything, its all good. Almost died of happiness one night eating some butterscotch dessert I don't know the name of, went great with a nice glass of dry champagne. The item I most highly recommend -two words - LOBSTER BISQUE. I am a lobster bisque lover, have tried this specialty soup at high end restaurants in Boston, New York, Montreal, San Fransisco among others and none of them COMPARE to the bisque at Number 4. Simply TO DIE FOR. Try it, you'll never be the same :) Service: I have no criticisms - always attentive, professional, top notch. Highly recommend Number 4, easily the best resaurant in Mankato.

We found ourselves in Mankato on Valentines Day and wanted a nice evening out. We were skeptical by the reviews, but now understand. Yes this place could thrive in most metro areas. The line to enter was long, but fast. No reservation is a mistake for this place. You will wait. We requested a booth and had to wait twenty minutes beyond our reservation time, but we were glad we did. It was private, romantic and very comfortable. The server was friendly and fast. She made suggestions and was perfect at her job. Our tip gladly exceeded 20%. The food was excellent. The house made Guacamole at the table, the gnocchi and steak were excellent. The house made drinks were unique and delicious. The best part was the price of the experience. We were surprised. We had hoped to return Sunday morning for the bloody mary and free breakfast. It looks like the best $10 breakfast in America. Next time we will plan accordingly. Parking was plentiful on the street. Safe area. Easy to find. I hope you enjoy Number 4 as much as we did.

Sandwiches were good the two times I went there. Fries were over-salted and undercooked. Servers were not particularly friendly. Served cold French onion soup which I sent back and was still charged for even though I didn't eat any of it.

Went to number4 for the first time lady night and it was awesome! The decor was very classy. I had the airline chicken and I have to say it was the best chicken I have ever had. It was so tender it almost melted in my mouth. For dessert we had the red velvet cheesecake and was to die for! Wish I would have device discovered number 4 months ago!

One of the best places in Kato. Good specials and the place is classy so you feel cool just being there :)

My wife planned a early Mothers Day dinner with her Mom from Minneapolis, and Mankato seemed like the best spot to meet. The dilemma was where to go for a nice meal. This is the place! The food was terrific and the atmosphere spot-on! The onion rings are amazing and the entrees were delicious. The lobster bisque soup was the hit of the meal! Definitely worth the stop!

Super food and a varied menu. Lobster bisque is outstanding. Both sandwich choices and main entrees are just different enough too give you some unusual choices.

This was the most spectacular unique incredible barbeque chicken wrap I have ever tasted in my life. I wish I could give it 10 stars! Enjoy!

When it comes to fine dining, I have to admit, I didn't have the highest expectations for Mankato (Hey, I'm a Twin Cities foodie).... but I was quickly proven wrong. I recently discovered Number 4 while visiting Mankato and was wow'd. First, I loved the ambiance of #4 - cool, hip, awesome lighting, and relatively quiet. Great color scheme which makes you feel warm on a cold, MN night. The booths are roomy and romantic. They have a great bar, huge windows, and offer a "classy" but "casual" environment... in other words, you can walk in dressed up or strutting in with jeans too. As for the food? Top notch. #4 has a huge menu: lots of choices without being TOO large of a menu (Hint: don't make it any bigger, #4). It has casual "bar" appetizers like table-side guacamole ( which is delicious - plus, you can get fresh, hot, jalapenos on the side too!), shrimp boils, to fancier apps for your discriminating palate. As for entrees? The duck with wild rice risotto was out of this world (better than some Twin Cities restaurants!). The cherry gastrique perfectly complimented the duck, and the risotto with carmelized onions would shame an Italian. As for their pastry chef? Who are you and why aren't you in the Twin Cities? Despite being glutinously full, I splurged on the butterscotch cake. Being that I hate butterscotch, I wasn't expecting much. The dessert was a 5/5.... warm butterscotch oozing out of the center of a cake, not too sweet, beautiful presentation (creative), and the perfect end to a perfect meal. #4 gives the top Twin Cities restaurants a run for the money. Definitely the best fine dining in a 30 mile radius!

Popped in for a late lunch when doing some shopping with my daughter. We were there between lunch and dinner, so we were some of the only folks there. Food was very good for a foodie; however my plain-Jane daughter struggled a bit to find something for lunch. She was hoping for a pasta option but we didn't see one on the lunch menu. Would love to go back for dinner with the hubs the next time we are down there to fully experience the magic that is Number 4. (The menu resembled something that could be found at 112 Eatery in the cities)

The environment is very nice, dark, and cozy but the service seriously sucks! Last time I went there with a group of co-workers and it took at least 20 minutes just to get our drinks refilled. On top of that the waitress was unapologetic and chatted with the bartender most of the night. The homemade guacamole is really good but other than that I've had much better tasting entrees elsewhere in kato.

Great service, lip smackers are awesome ie tater tots w beer cheese, amazing tuna melt, great French fries, tacos are good, but they were out of cheesy does it and the bad habit my first two picks , they must be good.

Excellent place and enjoyed our time there on our drive through the area. Excellent selection of beers on tap and a menu that offered a good selection of sandwiches and appetizers that were fantastic in both presentation and creativity of ingredient pairings. Would definitely recommend the place and will revisit if given the opportunity.

We had a party here today with 13 of us for my dad's birthday. I picked it out to have some place new for everyone to try. The decor was much better than expected. I had made a reservation so they knew we were coming and the restaurant wasn't very busy, but the service was not good. The waitress and bartender worked together for our table. The bartender took my order and my husband's. My husband ordered a beer and I ordered a mixed drink. My drink showed up right away, my husband's beer didn't show up until I asked the bartender for it. My sister-in law and my father ordered the lobster bisque and it was really good with hunks of lobster meat. My niece ordered the same thing and it was watery and no lobster. The lunch sandwiches were a good variety and were good, but nothing to write home about. My brother didn't get ketchup on his plate and he asked for it and never got it. My niece asked for some bread to go with her soup and never got it. They never came back and asked us how the food was or if there was anything we needed. Was never asked if I wanted another drink. Was charged a cake cutting fee of $15 for the cupcakes we brought in even though they didn't do anything with them. The wedge salad we had was good, but it was a 1/2 a head of lettuce instead of a wedge, way too much. Their lunch menu is limited to just sandwiches and none of the entres. In summary, ok food, subpar service, wouldn't go back.

Excellent atmosphere and even better food. It was our anniversary. We started off with mussels in white wine sauce and onion rings. The mussels were cooked perfectly and the onion rings were super crisp. The lobster bisque was awesome with big chunks of lobster claws. I had the spicy tuna and my wife had salmon. Both were cooked as they should be. We WILL be going back.

Excellent!! We are definite "foodies" and have struggled to find a great restaurant in Mankato. I read the reviews on opentable and was disappointed. BUT, don't believe everything you read because Number 4 was AMAZING!! Samantha was a great waitress and recommended the barramundi, which I have never had and was going to stick with salmon (my fall back on choice). But, the barramundi was amazing and so was the Pumpkin Bread Pudding. I will agree with one review that said the menu was way too big! There was a ton to choose from, but the breakfast menu looked amazing! We will definitely be back and ask for Samantha! She was outstanding!!

By far the classiest establishment in Mankato, but too pricey for a smaller city. Ambiance is incredible and the Prime rib Sunday special is an amazing deal

  • Victor T.

While there were a few drawbacks (my risotto was under-cooked) Number 4 is as good as it gets in Mankato. The atmosphere is comfortable and fashionable. The wait staff are professional and friendly. And, the entrees were perfectly seasoned and cooked. And don't leave without trying the desserts, which were probably the best I've ever had. Will be back again.

Background noise hard for those affected. Food and wine selection is good option in Mankato. I will be back.

The ambiance is a bit dark but a fair attempt at fancy. The service was great. The drinks were great but not cheap. The food was tasty. I had the jive turkey with the truffle fries. All around a pretty great experience- I'd come again.

Mankato, MN is a small city of just over 40,000 people. So imagine our surprise when we found not one but TWO great spots for a kickass Bloody! This one is the "Weekender" and despite its name, you can get it during the week if you ask really nicely. It's their house mary garnished with salami, pepperoni, pepperoncini, Colby cheese, pepper jack cheese, a beef stick, cherry tomato, celery, pickle, lemon, lime and a JUMBO SHRIMP! also, this being the midwest it naturally is served with an 8oz beer chaser! Get yourself one. or 6. On weekends it comes with a FREE BREAKFAST, you know... on the side. Happy hour appetizer menu will melt your face off.

Traveling through town with the Mrs, looking for some good eats - very happy yelp sent us here. Originally the search was for a good burger and bloody mary at a solid dive bar, but a previous reviewer's photo of the weekender bloody steered us here. I had a Big 4 burger and she had the short pants (veggie), both wonderful. It was more $ than planned for a Saturday afternoon, but my no means am I complaining - quality food done right. Would love to come back with couples later in the evening as it seems slightly more geared for a nice dinner. No white table cloths, but nice walnut tables, hightops & booths. Server (Maggie) did a nice job of recommending other spots in the area (including some not owned by the same owners). Saturday afternoon, Lumineers playing in the background - enjoying a weekender bloody, nearly perfect.

I went there for a drink, and they had an above average bourbon selection. They make clear ice balls for the whiskey, which is an unexpected and well appreciated way to serve the whiskey. . Bartender was skilled and knowledgeable. Nicest atmosphere of any eatery I have been to in Mankato. Feels like a big city restaurant.

  • Allison S.

Love this place! They have a delicious Bloody Mary and on the weekends if you order a bloody you get free breakfast! Who doesn't like free stuff! But even beyond that they have good food and a good selection of drinks. They make a delicious guacamole! Really like this restaurant and plan to come back again and again!

  • Ryan E.

Service could've been better, but the drinks and food were pretty decent. Not a very long wait time, and I didn't mind hanging out in the lobby for a little bit. Honestly, the food wasn't very memorable but I think it'd be a great place to grab lunch with some coworkers - the drinks were my favorite part. Can be pricey.

Very good burger. I ordered the number 4 burger and it is very delicious! The beer is also nice, sweet child IPA fits well with the burger!

Service SLOOOOOW. Food servings very small and I don't eat much. Flavor of Lobster bisque good but no Detectable lobster. Fruit canned. For what we got it was overpriced.

This is one of our top picks in Mankato. We are frequent visitors to NYC and to us this place would easily fit in with the Manhattan restaurant scene. It feels like a bit of the city in Southern Minnesota. I love the fact that they update their menu seasonally so we don't get bored. Their varied menu is not your typical bar fare. Their creative selections will please discriminating foodies you don't usually find elsewhere. If you want to create a small plate meal, order off the appetizers menu. I highly recommend the white mussels, guacamole and lamb sliders. Beer selection is also pretty good. Go during happy hour (Mon-Fri, 2-6 pm and every night, 9-11 pm) and save big on beer, house wines, rail drinks and apps. Parking can be a bit of a challenge during busy times, but ramp parking is available just over a block away.

I typically like #4 but the other night we met friends there and the food was marginal and music was so loud we couldn't chat without screaming. Very disappointing. The waitress had trouble hearing us but made no attempt to address the problem. Fortunately there are other places in Mankato.

Most amazing hand cut fries ever! Ribs were tender and delicious. Burger had great flavors. Service was friendly and had an upscale pub feel. It was worth the fight to find parking.

Excellent food, small plates are actually very large. The KG2014 sandwich was the bomb. Spider small plate is the best scallop appetizer that I have. This place is feels like an LA transplant. We came here twice today.

  • Tim C.

We had a great time at #4. Beer list was pretty good...a nice mix of small breweries. The food was good. My only critique was there was no subtlety in any of the food, all the flavors were big, I would say a little too big. For instance the home made tater tots were good...a really good homemade tot would be awesome....the garlic, onion, and truffle flavors were too strong. Same with my black and bleu steak, steak was good, there was some targon (maybe thyme) in the sauce and there was just too much of it.

Stopped in for a quick lunch, based on yelp reviews, glad we did. Great sandwich, I had the falafel, and salad (wedge was huge). Good service and atmosphere, would recommend you try this place today or tomorrow :)

Loved this place. Very friendly and attentive waitress. Apps were awesome. Beer and whiskey selection were great. Great recommendation by a work peer!

I had a really excellent lunch here today when I was passing through town. I had the las mujeres salad with chicken and it was really fresh and delicious. I loved how they added the Granny Smith apples for some tartness and crunch. My only gripe was that I really wanted to try the dessert (not many restaurants cook desserts to order), but there were such big gaps between server visits that I simply ran out of time and had to leave. Really disappointed I didn't get to try that passion fruit shortcake thing that sounded amazing! Definitely worth a stop but make sure you've got some time to spare.

Number 4 is by far the best restaurant in the city of Mankato. I am a New Yorker and ate here 2 times while on tour passing through. I ordered the asparagus appetizer which comes grilled over polenta fries atop a blue cheese creamy sauce. This plate is one of the MOST DELICiOUS things I have EVER EATEN! I found myself thinking about it days later and returning to order it again.

Service was terrible as was the food. I would give it zero stars if I could. My kids and I were excited to go here tonight but McDonalds would have been a better experience. We went a year ago and we were very impressed with our food so thought it would be a similar experience. No way. We waited at the front as several employees walked right by before eventually being seated. Even then the hostess seemed annoyed at seating us and we waited quite awhile before getting the requested high chair, which came with a broken safety belt. After five minutes or so and flagging two people down, we got one that wasn't broken. No apology. After we were seated, coats off and son in a high chair we were asked to move as they wanted the table to add to an upcoming reservation. Really? Regardless, we did. We then waited forever for someone to greet us and take our drink order. My kids each had the chicken strip kids meal which looked like your standard drive through meal for $7 each. I ordered a veggie falafel pita with fries for $10. The fries were soggy but edible with the $1 extra for bbq sauce instead of ketchup. The falafel had zero flavor and was barely warmed in parts. It was a soggy mess that couldn't even be picked up. The waitress had very little interest in checking on us throughout our entire meal or getting us refills on drinks despite it not being busy at all. I guess she saw a bigger tip in the table next to us as she was constantly checking up on them. When she came to take our plates/give the bill to me I told her how awful my falafel was with one bite out of it and she said she would remove it from the bill. When the bill arrived she took 50% off of the $10 sandwich. With the extra bbq sauce charge, I had $6 soggy fries. Yum. We were never offered the desert menu. As I couldn't eat my food and wasn't offered a replacement, I went to Starbucks afterwards as I was hungry only eating a few fries and to get the awful taste out of my mouth. It was honestly the worst food I have ever eaten at a restaurant. So so gross even thinking about it now. What a waste of time and money. I didn't leave a tip. I've never done that in my entire life. I've also never felt so completely unwelcome/unwanted in a restaurant before.

Good food but Special does not indicate the need to downgrade beer for the fish and beer special. Also take forever to get bill paid on 9-26-14 PM

  • Alice G.

Ambience was good, the music selection was excellent. The food was delicious. The truffle fries are a must. Burger was cooked to perfection. All the ingredients seemed fresh. Doesn't get 5 starts because the restroom was dirty and so was the waitress apron. The waitress was a little overwhelmed. She was the only waitress attending to 8 tables. But there is no excuse for a dirty restroom.

  • Tanya K.

Great service and a great selection. One of the best burgers I have had. I went On Monday and that is burger special night . I went with the last one on the list. It had a chipotle ranch Gravy that hit the spot. Mariah was a very helpful waitress. When I get back to Mankato I will stop back in!

  • Happi Y.

Tomato sauce seafood pasta was okay, nothing exciting taste wise. The tots with cheddar dip was awesome, delish, but it'll be a killer if the tots had a more chunk consistency rather well mashed potato patty. Don't get me wrong, the tots is a must try.

  • Brad S.

The starter menu had a number of interesting choices. I had the Lizzy and it was good. Wifey had the Kiwi, a lamb burger and it was tasty too. Lots of college kiddos in having a huge Blooody Mary with a free breakfast. Service a bit below average. Pretty good food. Kinda pricey.

Quite the find in Mankato. Food was great- had the grilled asparagus and mussels white( wine, butter, garlic) for appetizers both equally good. For my entree I had the bolgogi- seared tuna with snap peas, onions, scrambled egg, and kimchee. Sounds weird but was awesome, the only knock is I asked for it spicy and their idea of spicy is weak sauce. The ambiance is cool and laid back. Their servers need a little more training and their bar selection could have a little more depth, aside from that great restaurant. Definitely will return.

This place maybe would be acceptable with better service. Lousy. We had reservations at 8:15, and didn't get our food until almost 10. Empty drinks and plates in front of us for way too long. You can do much better in Mankato.

Stopped in on our way through Mankato for lunch on a Sunday. Great ambience, excellent service. My husband's burger was one of the best he's ever had, and he is REALLY into burgers. We will definitely be back if we find ourselves in Mankato again.

This restaurant is subpar at most! The food was decent, burgers were ok but the ruffles potato chips didn't equate it to a $13 burger. While arriving later at night (9:15pm) we were greated by a very rude greater who informed us that "Everything closes at 10 o'clock!" We were seated and our drink orders were taken, 3 of the 4 ordered water and the 4 ordered coffee with cream. The waiter arrived a few minutes later with coffee colder than the water and some French vanilla creamer. The waitress didn't bring up the fact that they were out of normal creamer and seemed irritated when we brought up the fact that we wished for normal creamer. She then decided to inform us they were intact out of normal creamer. Then one of us discovered one of the water glasses to have multiple lipstick marks around the ring of the glass, so she brought us a new glass. She then took our orders and by the time the order was placed in a nearly barren restaurant it was 9:35. We all ordered what we wanted and one of us ordered the fish n chips. Our waitress told us that for a nickel we could get a beer added so we agreed and placed the order. Our food arrived 20 minutes later and no beer. We asked her about the beer and she decided to inform us then that they had discontinued that special a few days prior and sorry we can't do anything for you. Like I stated above food was subpar and the service was no more than ok but the burger was good, so that where I'll give you one star!
