    Given the name, I probably should have ordered pie. I went there for breakfast and left wishing I had saved those calories for donuts instead, which I then walked down the street and ate anyhow. Service was fine, but the food wasn't very good. The pancakes were undercooked (gave me flashbacks to my middle school cafeteria), the eggs were overcooked, the maple sausage was probably made by jimmy dean and the rest was unremarkable.

    We had lunch and breakfast during our last visit to Grand Marais. The food was excellent and the pie was wonderful. The service was friendly but rushed us while eating pie in a almost empty restaurant.

    Came here for breakfast with the hubby. I had maple sausage, gouda, mushroom, and onion omelette with cranberry wild toast. Did not know what to expect about the toast but thought i'd try something I normally wouldn't try and boy am I glad I did! The cranberry wild rice toast was really good! The omelette was really good too, but you know it's one of those things that's pretty hard to mess up. The best part of the breakfast was their breakfast potatoes! It was thin strips of potatoe (think hash browns) that are mixed with sour cream and who knows what else! It well definitely make you go over your caloric intake for the day but so worth it! Hubby had sausage gravy and biscuits with breakfast potatoes and 2 eggs which looked really yummy too!

    Came for lunch based on reviews in a tourist flyer in our cabin. Should've checked Yelp instead. So disappointed. Is it because we didn't order any pie? Fish and chips were terrible! Check out the photo I posted and you will see what I mean. The fries were tasteless. The batter on the thin fish fillet was thick and crunchy. I can understand if it is from a freezer box, but this is $15 and supposed to be fresh caught. If it was, we couldn't tell. What a shame. If you want fish and chips, go to the Angry Trout for a much better meal for the same cost. The crab cake Caesar salad was o.k. Nothing I would dream about or order again. I ate it. I have better Caesar dressing by Brianna in my fridge at home. Funny thing about the salad is, they didn't chop the lettuce. At all. Not kidding. Huge leaves of romaine me and two other people at the table who ordered this had to struggle to cut. It didn't look like it was done on purpose. Maybe they were short on time? Guess we should've had pie and only pie.

    This place came recommended, so we thought to give it a try. We walked in and asked to be seated outside (they have a few tables just outside the restaurant) and the waiter who graciously greeted us and gave us menus, and said of course. After waiting for 20 minutes and no one checking in with us, we decided to leave. Don't get me wrong, we are all about being laid-back and taking it slow, but this was ridiculous. After sitting out there for over 20 minutes without any server acknowledgment? It's not like they couldn't see us - we could see in - they could see out!

    Here's what I'd do to make the pie closer to 5-star worthy: 1) enlarge the size to better fit the price. This piece looked small vs others I've had along Hwy 61 and loved. 2) Do something special with it. It was very plain Jane and the crust taste didn't make up for that. Thicker crust? Crumb topping? I don't know but make it obvious why it's priced the way it is. Thanks for replying to my last review!

    One of the only spots for breakfast in Grand Marais. The portions are hearty, the selection is wide and varied and the prices are good. Not to mention everything is homemade - including the spectacular selection of baked goods as you walk in the restaurant. I have never tried the pie but my mom raves about the brambleberry pie. They brew locally roasted Fika coffee - it is deliciously roasty flavored and strong! I was happy to see that since I had returned after two years, they were offering GF bread - nice to see. However - I am not particularly crazy about their breakfast potatoes. The remind me of a tradition cheesy potato hash brown bake - and they have panko crumbs on top so they are not GF. It would be nice if there was a more standard breakfast potato option, like simply hash browns or baby red potatoes chopped up with rosemary. The Voyager is great, homemade maple sausage patty (it is a bit on the sweet side, the maple is by no means lacking), 2 eggs your way, 2 homemade pancakes that will stick to your ribs (also with local syrup), toast (pick from 4 kinds) with blueberry jelly and the aforementioned breakfast potatoes. This is a great deal and is sure to keep you full for a good 5 hours! The roasted vegetable omelet with feta was also delicious! I liked the sausage, cheese & mushroom omelet - but the maple in the sausage seemed overpowering for the omelet. I am not used to have eggs sweet in any kind of way. The staff was great - our server remember us on the 2nd morning and was so friendly and even remembered that I ordered GF toast! WOW! This is a popular spot, you may have to wait but probably not too long. Good for kids, good for groups. Right on Wisconsin so you have a view of Lake Superior.

    A cozy place, they also have some tables outside to enjoy the shoreview - but you can stil do it from inside. We went here for breakfast, and they had a very wide selection! The food was good, simple but still satisfying. We also shared a slice of homemade pie with berries: I really liked it because it wasn't "full of butter" as many other typical american pies. Thumbs up!

    A very good breakfast place in Grand Marias. They have a small patio area, but is friendly for dogs. The menu is very north woods (who would have guessed) but the right size for good execution (also gluten and dairy friendly). The kayaker omlet was on point (LOTS of meat, good amount of sweetness from the maple sausage(?) as well as the breakfast sandwich. The granola pancake was absolutely phenomenal. Our server was new, but did a very quality job. Overall would recommend!

    We really enjoyed this place! We stopped in for dinner, stayed for the pie... And then went back the next day for some more pie!!! The appetizer we ordered (onion rings) came with two unique and refreshing dips. The salad was good, the pot pie was delicious. The servers were very nice and made great recommendations. We'll be back for sure!

    This is always a breakfast stop for us when we're in Grand Marais (ironically though, I've never ordered pie). I've had most of the breakfasts, and they're all fantastic - especially the pancakes. Also, the coffee is a house brew that is noticeably good. The prices are, however, a bit high. They seem to a la carte you to death; pancakes are one price, but it's an upgrade for certain kinds of pancake, an upgrade for fruit in the pancake, and an upgrade for better syrup. Net, the pancakes you thought would be $5, turn out to be $9. But they ARE darn good.

    I'll admit, I did not have pie here, but I wasn't overly impressed with their breakfast. The breakfast menu has the usual items: pancakes, omelets, scrambles, plus a lot of benedicts. I chose the Voyager Breakfast, which came with their breakfast potatoes, scrambled eggs, sausage and pancakes. They make their own maple sausage in house, and my hubby loved it (I'm not a huge sausage fan, so I didn't actually try it). The breakfast potatoes were tasty, and creamy. I think they might have had cream cheese or sour cream in them because they had a nice tang. But they weren't served hot! They were luke warm at best, which kind of ruined it for me. My other main problem with the breakfast was the pancakes. I swear these were made with Bisquick mix, there is no way these were homemade pancakes. How hard is it to make a pancake, people??

    I do not understand the poor reviews! Maybe you need to make sure you order their homemade dishes, but service was great and food was filling and delicious! Went there for lunch with my boyfriend. He had the walleye sandwich and I had the pot pie with a side salad, but we shared, too! The sandwich had this homemade tartar sauce that was great. Some tartar sauce is just too gloopy and mayo-rich. This was fresh and unique and paired perfectly with the crisp, perfectly battered fish. And I mean this was a well sized piece of fish for the price! We could've saved half to go if we weren't hungry. Now the house made pot pie was probably one of the best I've ever had next to my father's homemade. It had a crust similar to a pasty and the chicken was real roasted chicken chunks!! Fresh veggies and homemade gravy. My mouth is watering thinking about it! And the side salad was simple but fresh and there's a pretty good selection of homemade dressings. We were well-fed so we didn't have pie but I'm sure they are great. Especially with that rich fresh crust! Would definitely go back and would most certainly recommend. Also the waiter was super friendly and service was prompt!

    I would say check this place out for breakfast. They have some tastey options. Sadly their ice cream is no longer the homemade from scratch stuff that they use to make in their old location....though it is Sydney's Custard which is yummy. They do make some quality pie and I recommend it as a stop for a snack of that sort as a after dinner dessert. :)

    In my top ten breakfast's place of all time. The orange pecan granola had a really great flavor. Wild rice bread tasted really fresh from the oven. But everything was definitely homemade and the real deal. Try the in house maple sausage please!

    Good breakfast place in Grand Marais. I loved the maple sausage omelette with the cranberry wild rice toast. I'd be interested to come back for lunch or dinner and try the pie though my husband thinks we should try elsewhere before returning.

    We stopped by on a whim on our way out of town. The menu had enough options, and it seemed like if they didn't have exactly what you were looking for they could make it. I had the 1 pancake, 1 sausage, and 1 egg. The pancake was different than most, a bit more firm on the outside and nice and fluffy in the center. It was delish. The egg was under cooked - poached - but that's a 50/50 chance. My husband had a different dish of a similar variety and he seemed to enjoy it as well. My favorite part of our visit was the PIE! I had the bumbleberry - it was nice and tart with such great flavor. My husband had the blueberry and gave it 2 thumbs up as well. The pie is what made the breakfast great, other than that...it's a cute, decent place.

    I'm giving it an extra star. What would keep me coming back is the variety. I got a different kind of omelet but it was odd. It had gouda, mushrooms, onion, and maple sausage. It tasted so sweet, it turns out to be caramelized onion, not just the maple in the sausage which was delicious. There didn't seem to be much cheese, so it tasted even sweeter. I didn't get pie either but they are displayed early, and I'm sure more come out throughout the day. They did look pretty droolworthy. The attached lodging looks scary. I think I'll put it in a movie.

    My new favorite place to eat in Grand Marais. I tried the three meat maple meatloaf and it was the best. Served with very tasty homemade hashbrowns and steamed pea pods. The Mango Ginger Iced Tea was good too. I'll be back.

    I had the sister special, which was good. The cranberry wild rice bread was delicious. My partner had roasted vegetable omelet . "The omelet was good but it wasn't extravagant, the potatoes were amazing." All of the servers were also very attractive Russians!

    Super friendly restaurant owners and great breakfast spot. We had the wild rice cranberry French toast with caramelized peaches on top and the short stack of blueberry pancakes. The house blended tea (Voyager) was delish! We'll be back to try their dinner menu next time we're in town.

    This unpretentious place offers the best breakfast in the Grand Marais area. The maple sausage is so good I've tried many times to duplicate it. The baked items - scones , pies, breads - are delicious and the pies are absolutely the best on the North Shore. Lunch and dinner are excellent also. Eat on the porch and enjoy the lake view.

    Went here this morning for breakfast, on the advice of a friend. The eggs benedict-- made with maple sausage under the poached eggs -- were amazing. My partner had biscuits and gravy; he, like me, cleaned his plate. And of course we couldn't come to a place called "The Pie Place" without having pie. I had an EXCELLENT coconut cream (better IMO than what I had at Betty's Pies a couple days ago) and he had Dutch Apple, which was "just like [his] mom used to make". The view from our seats on the front porch was fantastic -- a horizon full of Lake Superior. Four stars instead of five because the server was ever-so-slightly overworked and a bit absent-minded. I think they probably have one person up front waiting tables, and one person back in the kitchen; it's a small family-run sort of place. But the place was clean, the food was good, the pie was memorable (in a good way), and we'll gladly come back for a meal here.

    Went in on a Sunday evening. Wasn't too crowded but may have been more than expected as the servers seemed overloaded. I had the chicken pot pie while my wife had the crab cake Cesar salad. Both were excellent although here salad was short on dressing. The pot pie was very good with robust flavors. The crab cakes were different from the typical Chesapeake Bay style we're used to but very tasty. I had apple pie with the local frozen custard while my wife had chocolate cake. Both were great. We had had the custard at the stand and knew it was good. Pity that the service doesn't match the food.

    I was craving the chicken pot pie that was mentioned in a review. I actually asked my husband to not wait in line at the Crooked Spoon, which had a great feel and a yummy looking menu. We were heading out for the boundary waters for a week and a stick to your ribs meal of comfort food seemed the ticket for me. Instead, I ended up with a server that I had to beg for more water and she seemed more interested in clearing tables and rolling silverware into napkins. She told me the walleye fish and chips were fresh, which I highly doubted due to proximity. The were so gross - totally fishy tasting and dry. I think a frozen fish would have been better. Don't bother. The place has an old and worn out feel to it as well.

    I was really hoping this place would be "The Place" to go to for breakfast in Grand Marais... so far we're 0 for 2. This is the second year in a row that we've gone to Grand Marais and we keep coming up empty handed for breakfast. First of all, we were 3 adults and we had two children with us - we know and understand that serving people with kids can be a pain so we try to come prepared. We asked for a high chair and waited, at our 4-chair table, for about 5 minutes to receive the requested high chair. So during this time, I stood at our table because my chair was occupied by an 18month old. Fine, whatever. The food: We asked for a single blueberry pancake for our girls to share. It was served completely raw in the middle. The entire 5 inches that made up the middle was raw. We sent it back and it took 10 minutes to receive another - with the excuse that "Everything is made from scratch...so you know..." So you make the batter for each pancake when they are ordered? Or was that an excuse for it being served raw? In the meantime... "Grandma" - who is only 55 years old - ordered a half order of biscuits and gravy. She likes spice in her food and she thought they were very bland. I looked at her plate and the biscuits looked like cheap, overly dry, store bought biscuits. She said they tasted extremely salty. Maybe those are made to order too and the salt shaker fell into the dough... She later told me that it was the worst breakfast she had ever eaten. My dish - I ordered the apple cinnamon french toast. The french toast is made from wild rice and cranberry bread. Truly I needed a steak knife to cut most of this into bite sized pieces. Since I didn't have one, I cut around those rock hard pieces and then eat them as a whole piece. I wasn't impressed. The 18 month old was fed the majority of my apples to keep her calm while we waited for their pancake to come back. From what I tasted, it may or may not have been made from scratch. They were pretty non-special. The hubs - had the crab cake benedict. He liked the potatoes, the rest was pretty standard benedict fare. As we travel to Grand Marais ever year we will keep trying the breakfast joints. Hopefully there is some place in town that actually has a decent breakfast. Maybe the only place to get a decent breakfast is out of town for brunch, like a Lutsen or Naniboujou? Does anyone know? Its amazing that breakfast is so simply and yet so many places - even here in the Twin Cities - can screw it up so bad. Oh well there is always next year...

    while we didn't have the pie, we were fairly smitten with the place. not too sure why, given the wide gravel driveway leading up to what was once a house (may still be) with too many cars in the drive behind, and a "shit shack" appearance according to the wife, but the food is really good. I suspect the pie is better than betty's pie shop. I had the caribou eyes (bread with holes cut out and eggs over easy inside) and it was really good! so, try this place, it don't look like much, but it is worth the try.
