Good food! Staying at Arrowwood in Alexandria for vacation from Southern California. Went to Mi Mexico because the yelp reviews were promising. Felt the need to post about this place myself. The food was amazing and very authentic. I ordered the lunch special shrimp fajitas and my BF ordered the beef burrito and chicken enchilada. Both were very enjoyable. Portions were perfect and food quality was great. You can tell everything was fresh.

Wow, was I impressed by Mi Mexico! We drove past one night and saw it was packed, not even room for parking, so we thought we better stop and try it. And we are glad we did. It looks pretty typical from the outside, but the inside is awesome! All the chairs and tables and booths are all works of Mexican art and sculptures and things. So they do have a ton of choices on the menu. No super authentic Mexican dishes, they don't serve lengua, al pastor, tripa, or other choice Mexican meats. Their tacos are hard or soft shell but not authentic. However, this did not stop me from enjoying it. Their ground beef is amazing, it actually has a taste to it. Quesadillas had flavor! All it is is a tortilla with cheese. And it was good! Tamales were the best I've ever had, beans were superb and flavorful, rice was good, my enchilada was fantastic and the sauce over it was delicious. They also have some Mexican beers if you're in the mood for one. I noticed they sometiems have specials on beers for only $2.50 which is awesome. If you're craving Mexican food this place is a great choice up here!

I feel bad for folks in Alexandria that think this is quality authentic mexican food. It's not even good mexican fast food. More like a bad lean cuisine frozen dinner. And that may be an insult to lean cuisine. Don't be fooled by the cute decor. The chips were good, but positive the salsa came from a jar, and if it didn't then shame on who made it. And where is my pico, what self respecting mexican restaurant doesn't serve fresh pico?

I'm a picky Mexican eater and while the food is good, for me it's nothing more than that. A good meal though is sometimes enough.

I can remember enjoying many a root beer float at the A & W that used to occupy this space that now houses the only dine-in Mexican restaurant in this small resort town in Minnesota's Lake District. Alexandria, Minnesota, simply known as "Alec" by the locals, is a great vacay getaway for family time on the chain of lakes but as you might expect, is not necessarily known as a culinary destination unto itself. So I was amazed to discover among a sea of local 2 and 3-star ratings on Yelp, that "Mi Mexico" earned a standout 4.5 on Yelp. Seeing this, we quickly decided to do some Mexican. After surveying their extensive "to-go" menu, we placed our order with a courteous young man with a strong Spanish brogue (we found out after ordering that he was not from Mexico but rather from Guatemala). Throwing him a few "por favors, a denada and a gracias", we jumped for a "Steak Burrito Supreme" and an order of mixed "Tacos Mexicanos" with a selection of pescado (fish), pollo asado (grilled chicken) and carne asada (steak) tacos. The burrito, topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato and freshly made guacamole just blew us away. We loved the 5 different containers of tasty sauces and toppings that they neatly wrapped up in our take-out order (I've never been given FIVE before!). Great job Mi Mexico...you killed it. While the food was not necessarily "authentic" Mexican, it was nevertheless outstanding and had a definite bite that I was not expecting. After this surprising experience, Mi Mexico may become a new vacation tradition for our family.

Mediocre non-homemade food.. Clearly frozen re-heated and poured from a can. Poor service...staff would rather play on their phones than provide service. Have tried dining here twice.

OK this IS five stars, I gave a four star to one in Iowa but this is by far better. Whole family enjoyed all entrees and margarita was perfect!

Beautiful decorations, super bright and colorful. Friendly staff dressed professionally. I was genuinely surprised here. I've driven by this place a hundred times and thought great, another McMexican Chi-Chi's -type joint. Wrongo! A broad, authentic menu featuring shrimp, fish, beef, pork, chicken and now al pastor. Table salsa is mild but tasty, no problem, they have hotter. The chip basket is warm and filled with light airy crispy chips, excellent! We had a variety of entrees- chalupa, tacos, enchiladas, tamales- all were very, very good. Excellent rice and beans too. We brought some friends from the Czech Republic and they were just in love with this food that they'd never tried. The chili rellenos were a big hit. Very reasonable too- 2 giant Dos Equis and dinner for 4 with one dessert was under $60!! As we were walking out I noticed they had just added Menudo and Tortas!! We go to Alexandria often and this will be a regular stop. Who'd a thunk it, a real Mexican joint in Alec?

Went back for a second visit expecting another great experience. Saddened to say it's not as great this time around. Went with my wife and inlaws, 3 of our 4 dishes came out wrong. Two of us ordered beef and one ordered chicken dishes. We ended up with one beef order for the wrong person and the other two came as chicken in the wrong dish. They corrected it right away but when the desert came, fried ice cream, it taste like it had been made a few days prior then stuck back in the freezer. I have never experienced soggy fried ice cream crust before and never hope to again either. Probably won't be returning after our latest experience. Worst part was, they were not even busy so I'm not sure how everything got to where it did

Stopped in again for some Chori Queso and this time it was made perfect. This place is a must when in the Alex area. They make quite an assortment of sauces for their chips . Food is always fantastic and who doesn't like cold Mexican beer on tap!!

Being from Southern California, The Mexican food here is amazingly good. We found everything to be home made, Alexandria has a real treat here, very authentic Mexican Food, which is hard to find these days. The only thing I would recommend is changing the salsa that comes with the chips, replace it with the salsa that comes with the taco's. Real Gem/Rare Find. The Mango margaritas was very good as well.

Love this place. None of the servers speak English and that's a good thing.

I interior of this place was crazy, very bright lots of colors. The food was pretty good. I had Tacos with shredded pork, the pork was a little tuff. The place was empty but I won't hold that against them 9:30p on a Tuesday.

My mom lives in Alex and we hit this place EVERY TIME we visit. GREAT Mexican food and friendly staff make this a place you will want to make your regular stop too. I had the Cheese Enchiladas last night and they were wonderful. Also the Choriqueso was fabulous. But the big winner last night was the rice - one of the best I've ever had and with Mexican being mi favorito, I have tried a bunch! Definitely need to try this place if you haven't yet.

If you like bright colors everywhere, you will love Mi Mexico. I always want to go here just because of the visuals! The tables and booths themselves have beautiful carvings on them with bright vivid colors. I love it! Oh and the food is great too.

I have had Mexican, and Mexican-inspired food, from California to Texas to New York. Mi Mexico is as good as any of them. To find this place in central Minnesota is an unexpected pleasure. I love it here and cannot wait to come back.

A wicked little mexican place in Alex. The tortillas must have been fresh, they basically tasted like puffs of heaven. The beans and rice were great, and all around a killer spot. Yay tasty small town mexican!

After living in Southern California I thought I'd never find anything close to the Mexican food I found there. I was SHOCKED by the food at Mi Mexico. Summering up here at the lake has made me a huge fan! Big beers and great burritos. The staff is super friendly and they let the dog sit with us while on the patio. They even brought him water! Thanks!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
