My go-to place! My friend and I trek over here biweekly for a good latte and are never disappointed. It has a hipster, grungey vibe (dark, with lots of secondhand furniture) that may be a turnoff for some. The location itself is small, as well as its parking, so you may have to park on the street and walk over. I've never had a bad latte here, and their espresso itself isn't too intense. My personal favorite is the cafe miel, it's a little sweet with cinnamon. This is definitely more of a "sit down and enjoy your coffee place" than a "grab it and go place", as it can take a while to get your drink (as with most coffee shops like this.) As for the staff, I haven't had a bad experience! Pretty friendly and not snobby . I'm stoked Ypsi has its "own" coffee place and I will continue to visit again and again.

There isn't much good to say about The Ugly Mug that you can't read in other reviews: an eclectic atmosphere with decent food and coffee. As well as many seating options, including a covered outdoor area. What would really make this place stand out from the crowd of copycat "cool" venues is if it didn't have such rude and snobbish employees. Much of the staff is very friendly and conscientious with the regulars one moment but then noticeably curt and hasty with other customers that have done nothing but patronized a local business. If you have time to chat with a regular buying a small coffee (while there is a line no less) you have time to answer a poor woman's question about your products. There's almost no parking so it's reasonable to conclude that the majority of this café's customers live nearby. However, the overall treatment of non-regulars would lead one to believe this local establishment is more interested in being cool then being in business.

This place is not really your typical coffee shop. Don't get me wrong, I like a cafe that steps out of the normal and tries something new. I think this place would have nailed that had the barista I encountered not been so... I guess "high and mighty?" Let me rewind. I came here to meet up with a friend of mine and I applaud them that they let us spend less than $10 and still sit around for 2 hours catching up. I felt really rude when I saw how long we had been using up space there. The atmosphere is really great - it'd give it 4 stars. Everything has a very defined style and it feels very hippie/grunge/hipster-esque. However, the further back you venture into the coffee shop, I started to feel like everything was a little cluttered and knick knacks were thrown wherever they would fit rather than displayed. It sort of made the cafe feel a little less clean. The prices - they aren't bad at all. Once again, I'm very happy to pay more for drinks and food as long as I feel the little bit of a more personal touch and effort than with large coffee chains. Taste and quality of the food and drinks - pretty great. I got some sort of sandwich bagel creation and I really liked it a lot. The drink was excellent. I wanted to try something new, something besides a simple latte or a cappuccino and I feel like they nailed it... even if it was like pulling teeth trying to get to that point. That's where the Ugly Mug disappointed me - the barista working seemed to be the king of all that is coffee. He knew everything about it and wanted everybody to know what he thought of their choices. I walked in and fully disclosed how I wanted to try something way out of the ordinary for myself and it was hot out so I wanted something cold, maybe blended, that had a sweeter flavor. After scoffing at me about how they don't make any of that "Frappuccino crap" that Starbucks makes, he offered to make me a latte over ice. I happily obliged and said that was more what I was thinking. After sitting down with my iced latte, the barista continued to talk to the patrons who were obviously regulars about how he hated when people come in and want frilly "Frappuccino-y sh*t or McFreeze-y bullish*t" from other places that aren't them. Yeah, I get that frustration and understand it but wouldn't he just suggest something similar, like my iced latte, rather than "schooling" me about it? I felt very uncomfortable but it was too late to change meeting places now. After a while, I quit listening to the King Coffee barista and just decided to have a good time anyway. After I was finished, I was sure to thank him and bring my plate up, tipping a little for staying so long, and I got a head nod. I still thought he was an arrogant child but I tipped him anyway... and after thanking him he just nods at me. I feel like he just put the cherry on top of the imitation McFrappe I would go and sip elsewhere, thinking of him and enjoying every last sip of my "McFreeze-y bullsh*t."

I really wanted to like this place. I spent my first visit outside in the patio area--I really enjoyed my lavender latte (+1 for having dairy alternatives). It was getting close to closing and one staff member told us that we were welcome to stay outside as long as we closed the gate behind us. Another staff member told us shortly after that we needed to leave so we left. I came back today for a second visit. It was 10am and there was a note on the door saying that the shop was open from 7am - 10am today (instead of the normal 7am - 8pm hours). The door was locked but I saw others inside. I went back to my car only to see someone else walk in right after me--she looked at me and said, "they are allowing *me* in" as if it was some exclusive establishment. I don't want to blame the establishment for her boastfulness but bottom line is that I felt discriminated against and it's not difficult to see why. Perhaps I wasn't "grungy" enough, or perhaps I was the wrong race. I thought we were supposed to unify on at last one cause here--the need for caffeine in the morning. Who knows... Either way, I'll purchase my coffee elsewhere...based on the other comments about the staff coming across as "high and mighty", perhaps others will do the same.

Dear Ugly Mug, I've missed you dearly since I've moved, won't you come brew me a fresh pot across the state? I mean, it's only a 2 hour drive! I have yet to find a coffee place here that makes my eye twitch quite like yours. Don't get me wrong, there's some damn good coffee here, but something about your beans just puts you above the rest... If I didn't already know that you were sourcing responsibly and roasting in house, I'd assume Monsanto got their shady little hands on them and created some sort of "super-bean". I'll always stop in when I'm near you, my friend.

From what I hear, there have been some significant management and staffing changes at the Mug since I moved away from Ypsi a year ago, so when I came back to visit this summer, I knew there was a good chance I wouldn't run into many familiar faces there. I stopped by anyway for nostalgia's sake - twice, in fact, since I was staying around the corner (and feeling nostalgic.) Both drinks I ordered (a latte and a dirty chai) were really mediocre. It seemed like the milk wasn't steamed right. Might be because of all the recent turnover (and having to train everybody at the same time) but it made me sad. I'm sure they'll still get business (the location is great!) but the people coming here for quality drinks will need to scout out some other options.

I stopped here for a quick cup of coffee. The coffee was just ok. Not awesome. Certainly not worth Starbucks prices. And the only milk available was whole milk. Now, I suppose it could have been worse -- it could have been skim milk. But being limited to only whole milk in a dedicated coffee shop is utterly ridiculous. I also had a major problem with the cleanliness of the place. The floors hasn't been swept in eons. Visible detritus littered the floor, particularly in the corners. There were actually a couple of dust-covered coins on the floor in non-traffic areas. I'm not sure when "hipster" became synonymous with "dirty," but it's just not acceptable. Buy a %$#@! broom, Ugly Mug!

Been half a dozen times so far,ALWAYS quality product and service. Cool vibe in the place too. Note: if you're a Starbucks fan, this might not be for you.

The drip coffee is pretty basic and bland. Didn't taste freshly brewed and wasn't hot enough. I wouldn't buy it again...

(Note: this review is for their bagels only, did not try the coffee.) I guess this is one of the places that either you love it or hate it! Unfortunately we didn't feel the love, sadness! Overall: overpriced bagel, lack of variety, poor service, in a coffee shop that smelled a bit like a toilet. Below is the breakdown: Parking: small lot in front. It was completely full at 10:30am on a Friday, we parked at a metered spot a block or so away Bagel selection: apparently they had many types but by the time we got in half of them were not available. I got the Big Breakfast bagel sandwich ($6.5) which included a pre-made egg patty, microwaved bacon, spinach, tomatoes, hot sauce, cream cheese, American cheese and butter. I guess the egg patty needed that much cheese and butter since it didn't have much taste after I decided to forgo there dairy part. I got the wheat bagel but there was only flakes of wheat in white bread Service: could be improved!. First off, there was a line of 4-5 people waiting to order, and yet the cashier kept chatting away for another good 5 min or so with a customer whom happened to be an acquaintance. Second, I ordered my Big Breakfast without dairy products and she asked, "so no eggs?" Third, it took 3 tries for me to get the right sandwich, as they only gave me an egg sandwich the first time, second time added some vegetables, and finally last time some bacon! Perhaps somebody needed more coffee or lay off the weed! Atmosphere: I think they were trying to go for a free spirit feel, but ended up with disorganization and somewhat dirty feel instead, mostly due to the musty, toilet smell that pervaded the whole shop.

The price you have to pay for this coffee just doesn't "blend" with the flavor you get. My girlfriend's spicy latte was leaps and bounds better than mine, however all you could taste was the sweetness. This little joint has an interesting vibe and seems very connected to the college community surrounding it, and it also sells Calder's Milk and that ladies and gentlemen is a rarity. However a good vibe and great selection of dairy does not make up for overpriced coffee.

It's unfortunate that this place is landlocked for expansion. It's just off the EMU campus so when it gets busy then you are pretty much out of luck to get into the place. Great place to grab a cup of coffee (the hot chocolate is awesome); the breakfast sandwiches all fresh and the footprint cookies are awesome. The guy with the brown hair and the beard (I think is a manager or owner) is by far the happiest guy I've ever seen. Always a smile to people and very supportive of his staff. He has the right formula down to make people feel comfortable in the environment he's created. Only draw back is the place is sort of growing beyond its building but I wouldn't change locations for anything. The location is part of the experience. The staff is as well. Ranging from the EMU all-American person to the hipster with awesome bright red nail polish who compliments just about everyone for something, this place is just a great place to hang out for a bit.

What kind of hipster bullshit is this? I had the serious displeasure of stopping in at The Ugly Mug for my afternoon coffee fix today. I was in a hurry to get back to work, no time to change my mind, so I had no choice but to order coffee here. The place is crowded with dirty hippies, sitting at dirty tables in a dirty shop. Sticky tables, dirty spoons. The guy at the register was one of those coffee know-it-alls that love to hear themselves talk and love to exude self-righteousness. He was really insulting and condescending after I tried in vain to explain what I wanted. They didn't want to add a single shot to my drink, because "Oh Emm Gee! Like, shots are pulled in TWO's, dontcha know?" Was told that I could have a quad shot drink or a two shot drink, but God forbid a 3 shot drink. Why can every other coffee house make my drink with an extra shot, but Ugly Mug can't? Interesting. Whatever, transient....just make me a regular one. They also throw a fit if you ask for it extra hot or in a to go cup. They have explanations (uhm, excuses) for everything. After a lot of rude eye rolling and hemming & hawing, it took two lazy G.E.D. morons to rub their last two brain cells together to actually make my drink. They definitely want to make the drink THEIR way, not YOUR way. Why pay premium price for this? If you like a place that brews great coffee and values their customers, this is NOT your shop. If you have a real job (or have clean clothes on, or are free of misdemeanors) you will feel very out of place here. After taking a very long time to make my drink, it wasn't even good! Barista girl tossed my drink on the bar and continued with her side conversation. And I hate lukewarm coffee. You will leave irritated and unsatisfied. I highly recommend going somewhere else, even Starbucks, because this place will drive you right back into the boring arms of Tom Horton's. Yuck.

Absolutely excellent cappuccino! Constructed well. Tastes great! Looks right! Service is cordial. Ambience perfect for a neighborhood coffee shop. Plenty of seating. I really just wanted to post the top line, but added all the rest (though it is accurate and honest) because they said my top comment was only a tip and not a review. Just read the top line.

I'm a Ypsilantian (Ypsilantier?) and I love my local restaurants and coffee dives. This place is a definite gem in my opinion when it comes to local flavor and great coffee. I've been here a bunch of times, either driving home or just coming around for a delicious coffee drink after a meal in depot town or a walk through Frog park. There isn't much I can say about it, it has a unique atmosphere, it has seasonal favorites if you are into the pumpkin spice (seems to be a thing right?). Stop by, check it out, if you love coffee, you will enjoy this place.

  • Jeanie S.

Their website bills the café as "Ypsilanti's living room." That's a perfectly apt description. It's casual, comfortable, a little worn and threadbare. There isn't a whole lot of seating. But...the coffee is worth it! I had the Sumatra, black, and it was incredibly rich. Great choice for someone who loves a full-bodied coffee à la Peet's (for you Californians stuck in Ann Arbor). Definitely on my regular rotation of coffeehouses.

This place has got charm. Oh yeah. I don't see too many ugly mugs in here--mostly other "weird" decorations. They house art from local artists, hold music events and offer a great study space. Their bagels and sandwich concoctions look appetizing, but I have yet to get my hand on those. -Café Miel: very rich, creamy, frothy and the perfect ratio of sweet to espresso. You don't taste much of the honey, but the nutmeg and cinnamon really shine. It's lovely--truly. What makes a good latte is its ability to not lose its consistency--this barista knows his stuff. Even sloshing around in the car it was a thick mixture of milk and coffee up until the very last sip. FINAL VERDICT: Although I loved the atmosphere of the place, boy do they sure take their sweet time in making the espresso drinks and waiting on you in general. That was annoying, as you watch the staff chatter away while you're on a schedule.

Hipster local coffee place. They have very good bagel sandwiches and descent coffee. Their specialty drinks are great! The furniture is "well broken in". It is comfortable but looks like they just grab stuff from the curb at the end of the school year. You can get a fancy coffee and a breakfast bagel sandwich for about 10 bucks. I recommend the Cafe Miel !

Alright it has been a year since I first rated this place with three stars. The main thing I hated was how cold the staff was to its patron's but they have amazing coffee. Now with a few new staff members this place is much more inviting, coffee quality hasn't changed from awesome. Quirky place to visit for a beverage.

Really the only reason I like this place is because of the art that is displayed in the coffee shop. I know that this is supposed to be a hipster hang out but customer service is still important, and yes that means you have to talk and thank customers. Everyone not just customers who have there faces tattooed.

  • Lee R.

The coffee is amazing. Some of the best in Washtenaw county. You just have to put up with baristas who take hipster attitude to a whole new level and take 15 minutes to pull one shot of espresso while they moan to each about how hard life is.

I love this place! It's great to chill on a weekend morning. It's been pretty busy every time I've been. They roast on site, so the interior is filled with full bags of green coffee beans... which adds to the experience. I've tried a few different types of their drip coffee, and no matter the origin they seem to be bitter. I'm not sure if that's due to something about their roasting style or what. They have lots of nice latte-type selections though, and always beautiful latte art. It's worth the trip... cool place.

They lack heart and compassion for people and EMU students. I used to be a loyal customer but never again. My son's car broke down and I told him to wait there for me. He had no money (which I would have bought a latte once I got there) and so they kicked him out. I hope the owners reprimand whomever made this decision. Poor kid just needed a warm place until I got there. Way to be compassionate ugly mug employees and way to show heart to your most loyal EMU customers. Shame on you! Former customer and EMU Graduate student

I stopped in for the first time; while the atmosphere was cool, the employees were not. The barista was not friendly at all and very cold. The drinks were pretty good, nothing special. Tried it once, now that I have, never again.

I magically ended up at the Ugly Mug Cafe the other day while waiting for my partner to get out of class. After having drove by the place many times before, I knew parking would be a pain. Luckily, a motorcycle park job left just enough space for my compact car. Yay me! Inside, I was greeted with eclectic artwork and the smell of coffee grounds. My mouth was practically watering. I ordered my iced vanilla chai, a cinnamon muffin and took my seat. The chai wasn't bad, and of course the muffin didn't blow me away, but I was just so into the vibe of the place that I loved everything. The baristas were social, friendly and helpful; and the decor was so interesting that I never found myself bored despite coming here to waste time. The parking lot is tiny, the place is popular. The coffee at least smells delicious, and the vibe is welcoming. I defintely suggest giving the Ugly Mug a try.

Finally stopped in for a coffee after seeing the place many times. Was very pleased with the atmosphere (although a little cold if people are coming and going a bunch). Staff was super friendly and patient. Two drip coffees and a delicious bagel for $5 even. You can't beat. One drip coffee was very acidic, but I got a refill of the other option and it was excellent. The short story is: coffee and food (just bagels, breakfast things and sweets) are great and reasonably priced (even prices with no added tax). The atmosphere is casual without a bunch of students camping out with their laptops like it's the library. Come here to hang for a bit over coffee and good tunes. Keep your laptop at Starbucks.

I like the hipster atmosphere, but this isn't the greatest place to get work done unless you bring earplugs. I brought mine, but the staff decided to play the whole first side of a Cher album, including "life after love," at fairly high volume and it wasn't enough. Cher's voice is very penetrating. Also, if you order coffee and put milk in it, and it starts to look all clumpy, the barista will tell you that this is normal, and doesn't mean that the milk is off, but that the milk is super-fresh and local and that the coffee is acidic. I tasted fine to me, but I have never heard this explanation before, or seen this happen before. I normally drink tea so whatever, not hard for me to avoid this experience in the future. The merch here is above average IMO. Some really nice tshirts.

Ugly Mug, you're the prettiest face of cafe I done seen 'round these parts. The only problem? I don't get any work done in here anymore. Why? Because this place has so many regulars that octogenarians should start coming here instead of drinking prune juice. Most of the patrons are city folk trying to regain a taste of home lost. Others are hip young 20-somethings studying or doodling in their fancy black books. Others just come to shoot the shit with the barristas, which, who wouldn't? They're darn nifty people. And still others are older ladies and gents who know a good thing when they see it. Sandwiches are amazing and creative here - get your fresh veggie fill without sacrificing glorious taste. Vegan foodstuffs. Coffee preparation comes in a zillion mad-scientist ways. Espresso is delicious. Soy milk brand is one that foams perfectly. If you want to go a slightly sweeter route, get the cafe miel. Aaaand they roast their own coffee. Damn that's sexy. 9 times out of 10, great music and great service. Parking? You can always park on the street and throw some quarters at the meters if you're just ducking in. Otherwise, it's time to get creative and do some monster rally maneuvers. I've never not found a space in the lot. But then again I never get out here until about 2pm. Inside is cozy and layered up with lots of miscellaneous items. Couch and a couple plush seats. Tables. Table lamps for yer evenin' readin'. Outdoor courtyard which is nice and green but a little street-noisy. Feels fine - looks fine - tastes fine. Time to come in and get your fix.

The coffee is excellent. Yummy cafe miel. Also tried the Mexican latte which is pretty good. Really like this place. Laid back atmosphere. Fun and quirky decor. The background music is all right. The only problem is that it's very cold.

As I sit here sipping my 'steamer' (which is a steaming hot cup of steamed milk!) You can't really get that wrong... But they've got a nice layer of foam on the top. :) Straight ahead I see snow falling on the road and the cars zooming past. Ugly Mug is a casual hip place. There are a fair share of hipstery people walking through, downing an espresso, and hanging out but the majority of the people who are sitting and working on stuff, like I am are too diverse to pin it down. I'm sitting on a couch against the far wall, which strikes a shocking resemblance to my couch at home listening to some rhythmic music I've never heard before. With my foot against a coffee table with a sticker to a piercing place in Ann Arbor, and my coffee on the arm of a chair of which the cushions are covered with coffee sacks. The light is coming in through the window on the side which you can't really look out of because it's made up of those square things that distort the view. But look slightly below and it's lined with a couple dozen mugs of varying sizes and designs, starting from an oreo mug to a #1 drinker mug and a cow shaped mug. AWESOME. The dispaly in general around here is very eclectic, a word I learned from sister act 2, back in the habit, where sister mary clarence tries to tell her music class about her music taste. There are jars of peanut butter next to a stone lamp, next to an eagle candle stick, next to a framed drawing of a cat with florescent eyelashes and a deboned fish next to it, behind a line of coffee cans from around the world, around the corner from what looks like a standing saintly baby Jesus. But by far my favorite thing about this place is the ample outlets! They KNOW their customers! And it's not like they have a computery area like most cafes do, but the whole place is stock piled with outlets. An outlet here, an outlet there, an outlet everywhere where!!! They've got 'em on the lamps, on the wall, on the floor. up above, down below. As you can tell, I'm quite excited about the outlets. I really should do this more often, actually writing the review from the place I'm reviewing. It gives a more authentic, true to the moment review :) I can't really vouch for the taste of the coffee, but they have their own roasting machine, so one would hope it tastes good. :) *I just noticed a wiseman on top of their fridge... he looks really stern. And he's next to a Jesus lookalike with wings. WeIRD!! Like I said... very eclectic! *And I also noticed they have art work and purses hanging from the wall that is on sale if you so desire it. Some things to note. - My GPS does not have a cross AVE. It has a cross ST. same thing. - credit card purchases over $5 only. So you could buy a gift card, and then deduct from that. Esp. if you plan to be back. which I do. - private lot parking right out front, but there are only like a dozen spots or less (so far as I could tell) -the counter is really confusing, or was for me. Where to order!!! It's right in the center of the long wrap around counter. I was looking for the computer as one would but I couldn't find the one where the monitor faces in. They have a computer facing the customers but I think that's for customers or for their office work. Not sure. you'll step on 4 floor mats, the one with the UGLY MUG logo is the one that you stop at to order :) - you need a key for the bathroom They also have ample baked goods but I can't attest to its quality yet.

Stepped foot in here for the first time because I was tired of my usual Ann Arbor joints. Immediately, I fell in love with this place. I talk about the Ugly Mug like I'm a regular, but I've only been here once (so far). I recommend it to those who are looking for a nice cafe just to chill, read or do some work while sipping coffee in a very random yet entertaining mug. Their coffee was fresh, the ambiance was warm, welcoming and colorful. If you've ever stepped into a place and instantly felt a connection, this was it for me! For nerds sake, it was like a homey burrow where I could think and people watch and enjoy life while sipping on coffee. Their lox bagel is pretty good as well. Anyways, as student in AA looking for a good change of scenery, the Ugly Mug became a very lucky, surprising discovery.

Either the place has changed or I have changed, but this is was the third wave of coffee was meant to be. Small shop roaster with a dedicated staff and don't expect to get all of you heart's desires to go, because the care enough to tell you to drink your 2 oz drink here. And I love it. Also, the coffee seems a lot more consistent and there are more regular going-ons. It's very hip. That will never change and if you have an unnatural fear of tight jeans and tchotchkes, then maybe try another shop. Or get it to go. Better yet, get it to go. I highly recommend asking the baristi what they like and just getting it. It's always good. And often different.

Hey Ugly Muggers! I've been going to the Ugly Mug since I moved to Ypsi, and despite the lack of enthusiasm that permeates place, I continued to go. As a bonafide local roaster drinker, I definitely appreciate locally roasted, delicious coffee. Some of my favorites are Graffeo, Pete's, Waterstreet, and more locally Mighty Good and Roos Roast. I was immediately bummed by the varieties featured at UM. The roast is very similar whether it be the Columbia, Ethiopia, Honduras or wherever the beans are harvested. So in giving them a second chance, I decided to start drinking the tea of which I have one favorite, the Pacific Mint. So why the bad score? The last time I was in for Pac Mint the tall, thin, nicotine-addicted, well-dressed guy bluntly and with no apologies told me that the empty table in the back was reserved for a tasting within the hour. He said nothing like "I'm sorry" or "maybe we should put a sign up." It was the manner and tone in which he said it. I'm sorry but a little friendliness goes along way! Instead most of the employees have a WGAF attitude and refuse to take their lithium. It was tolerable at times, but this dude was the last straw! And when I recounted the episode with someone they told me of an experience they had when they ordered a bagel & lox and there was a piece of dental floss in the cream cheese. Yummy! In this town, however, there are a few cafes, so despite the fact that the Ugly Mug is right down the street, I will not be going there anymore! Don't tip here, instead save your money and invest it in your future. Two blocks up the road another cafe just opened, which is much, much friendlier and better lit. The Ugly Mug doesn't necessarily refer to the cup you drink out of. It takes on more meaning here. I'm out.

The whole town of Ypsilanti has such a neat vibe to it, and Ugly Mug is no different. Upon entering the joint, they have mismatching furniture, art everywhere, and some really kitschy garage sale items, but somehow they all seem cohesive. Ugly mug has a great selection of hot and cold lattes, and they also have Latin inspired drinks, which are great. Overall if you want to come to a place with a really laid back atmosphere and that serves a solid product, then Ugly Mug is for you.

Love this place! No stranger to any EMU student who has probably spent many countless hours studying in this great laid back environment. Bought a cute little air sealed coffee dispenser that I still have and use to this very day! Sometimes they have live bands and they also offer a beautiful outdoor patio area.

Good all around! Free wifi and a good amount of tables to choose from. We got some hot chais and they were delicious. We also tried the pb&j on a toasted bagel and the lox bagel. I'm a sucker for smoked salmon and cream cheese! The mugs are the best part, though. You never know which one you are going to get. It's gotten better since they banned smoking and took away the theater seats. You can also grab a book for a quick read off the bookshelves along the edges. Definitely try this place out sometime.

Because it was evening, I had a steamer. So smooth and creamy. YUM!! Enjoyed sitting out on the patio. Good atmosphere!

Located just a few blocks from Eastern's College of Business, this coffee shop is the perfect way to get a little bit of fresh air before splurging on coffee to get you through the next study session. The coffee looks great, tastes delicious, and the atmosphere inside the shop is fun and inviting.

Ok, I have to update and report that I've been back to the Ugly Mug several times after my original review, and they've actually seemed to step up their game. Speed-wise, they still take a little longer than the average coffee shop, but I can forgive that. Also, their customer service seems to have stepped it up a notch, too. The last few times I have been in, the barista has been very pleasant. The prices will always be a little steep, but I'm willing to compromise on that. All of their drinks just has the most unique tangy sweetness. I think it is because they roast all of their own beans in a unique way or something! I'm impressed with the hard work and care that they put in to their roasting and selection of beans. For example, a couple of the long-time employees from here actually visited Honduras to meet the farmers who have been producing some of the beans that they use! Also, they offer a lot of "cupping" classes, teaching the community about coffee. A lot of their other community events are enjoyable as well, such as local bands and poetry readings, and they even hang local art on their walls. I really appreciate how they take an active role in the Ypsilanti community. So, adding a few stars for having uniquely good drinks and for doing good in the community.

It is just sad that I had to contemplate even giving this place 2 stars (as opposed to just 1). The Ugly Mug just doesn't do it for me. Let me first explain why I even gave it two stars: lots of books, kitsch, mismatched mugs, an odd collection of orphaned chairs and stools, and generally eclectic decorations; this makes for a pretty cozy little place, totally the typical coffee shop vibe, which is exactly the kind of place I like to call home. Parking here sucks x10. Yes, this is the norm for the area, but the parking here is literally worse than anywhere I've ever tried to visit. The parking was actually my first deterrent to the place...then I went inside... The service SUCKS! I feel like this place is hipster heaven and I am just not cool enough to be there (and to be quite honest, I feel like I am not even welcome). This is not just from the staff, either (it seems the Ugly Mug patrons are very territorial of their turf and don't want any non-hipsters encroaching on their hang out). I like to think myself a pretty hipster friendly person (independent thinker, progressive politics, artsy indie-rock listener, etc.) but this coffee shop just makes me feel SO out of place. I've only been here once (with an Ugly Mug frequent visitor...thought that might have made it more welcoming) and I DO NOT plan on ever visiting again. Considering the fact that I am in the neighborhood VERY often, that says a hell of a lot.

cheesygrapes.blogspot.co… Word of mouth from a trusted source (Patty) and a bag of Mexico is what got me hooked. The Ugly Mug Cafe is one of the first small batch artisan roasteries in Michigan. The worse thing any critic can do is to compare local roasteries. I wouldn't let the 1 or 2 stars stop you from checking out this place! Opinions are subjective anyways. Who knows, you may end up loving this place like Patty and me. P.S. Bagel sandwiches are fantastic. Read the rest on my blog (Link above). Thanks! Leo C.

I have been here twice, once for tea and food and the second time for coffee. Both were hit or miss, mostly due to service. I sat in one day and enjoyed my big daddy turkey club with crunchy cucumbers on a tasty croissant. The tea I got with it however was weak. Just really not doing it for me. Service that I had was just over the top with the I'm so bored and you are so unimportant to me, I did not bother to complain about the bad tea. Second time I ran in for a to go coffee. The cafe con caramel was super tasty and evil, the service again was ho hum and backed up so I waited awhile. I think the barista had better things to do with his time than make my coffee. Ok maybe I'm just too old for this place. I had good coffee and a good sandwich but damn, the attitude just kills it.

I live in Ann Arbor and commute to Ypsi occasionally exclusively to go to the Ugly Mug. These guys have delicious coffee and a great atmosphere that fosters that "coffee shop happiness" that only a certain type of place can give you. I tell all of my friends about this place, and I go as often as I can (which is not nearly as often as I want to go). I'm a coffee fanatic, so I'm hard to please when it comes to good quality coffee brewed correctly; these guys do it right.

They're great roasters! We always buy our coffee beans here, and every time I try a different origin and have yet to be disappointed. They pull great espresso shots and the drink menu has a lot of options to satisfy many different tastes- from sweeter drinks to really great lattes. I'm in love with the cookies from 'Tasty Footprints' that they sell (especially the peanut butter), and one of these days I'm going to try a slice of the red velvet cake they often have by the register.

I think the Ugly Mug is a great place. It certainly beats anything in Ann Arbor (its closest competition on the "mood" front being Ambrosia and its closest competition on the actual coffee front being Comet). Ambrosia's coffee is kinda meh, and Comet is sooopa tiny and overpriced. Many reviews here address the service. I have not had problems. I'm not sure what people are expecting. I think there are at least two kinds of establishments in the world (maybe more, but certainly two) when it comes to service. There are those that buy into the customer-is-always-right turbo-capitalist approach, and then there are those that take a more relaxed approach. Probably, different people prefer different approaches. I actually find intense customer service alienating and kind of invasive. I'm not saying I want my barista to heckle me, but I don't think that's the issue here. When you walk into the Ugly Mug, you get the sense that the people in there either a) think they are cool, b) actually are cool, c) are trying really hard to be cool, or d) are pissed that they don't feel cool. I'm sure I fall somewhere in a) or c) or some combination of those. But, basically, I just like the coffee, the music, and the vibe. By all means, if you don't want to worry about coolness with your coffee, and I can see why one wouldn't, go elsewhere, but don't be afraid of the service. They're just keepin' it rockin' in the free world...

Good: fresh roasted coffee, wafting into the streets of Ypsilanti during the middle of the day, reminding you that better coffee exists. Atmosphere. Bad: Baristas are inconsistent. Few of the baristas there are very good. If you have to question it, stick with the good conversations and black coffee and you'll never go wrong. I give the Mug four instead of five, because the green walls are fugly. (This shows my age, but) The Ugly Mug was better with theatre seats and red walls - no one can make an argument against this! You're just lying to yourself!

I heart the Ugly Mug because their coffee is delicious. Locally roasted coffee is phenomenally better than anything you can get at a large chain (yeah, I'm looking at you, mermaid), and the Ugly Mug does a superb job. Latte art is always a plus. I can usually find a spot in the lot, and if not there are a few FREE street spaces a building down Cross Street for people who really can't abide paying $0.25 to park for 10 minutes. Also, I've never had a problem finding seating when I want it. If it's full in the summer, the patio usually has tables. Never had a problem with the service. It seems like people commenting "feel" that the staff had a "bad attitude," but no one has really seemed to have a valid reason for saying that the staff was so "rude." It can be slow, but it's delicious, so I don't mind waiting while the one barista pours my cafe miel. No, they're not falling over themselves to up-sell you or make friends with you just because you graced them with your presence, but they're always willing to answer questions or make recommendations, in my experience.

I haven't been coming here, primarily because when I get anywhere near Ypsi I'm drawn like a magnet to Beezy's Cafe. Right now I'm sitting at Ugly Mug hoping Beezy doesn't pass by and notice me! :-o Well, I have to say that Ugly Mug is the most hip and comfortable cafe I've been to this side of Austin, TX. I'm enjoying the coffee, (I'm a rather unpleasant coffee snob, this is a big deal) as well as the music and the overall ambiance. So come in for a coffee and then get over to Beezy's to eat! :)

I LOVE this place. As someone who eats healthy and sensibly I love going here when I just don't feel like making food for breakfast or if I'm in a rush. They have vegan muffins and regular muffins but what sets them apart is the fact that they put every single ingredient on the label so you know what your eating. I love the fact that I can eat a healthy muffin here! They have the best coffee and the atmosphere is chill and cool. I love studying here and coming here with friends.

I make it a point to get here at least twice a week. I don't go in for anything other that the coffee out of the press pots, but it's consistently some of the best I've had. Small and a bit funky (in the good way). Seats sometimes hard to come by. The crowd tends to be alternative EMUish, but all seem quite nice, as are the baristas.

I came in here because I live less than a block away, and I needed to get out of my messy apartment to concentrate on things that needed to get done for school. I walked in and saw the eclectic decorations and heard Frontier Ruckus playing on the shop's stereo system. I felt like I'd like it. There were tons of tables open - a sharp contrast to the 24 Starbucks I usually haunt - even on a cold afternoon right after classes had gotten out. I guess therein lies the problem - I'm used to the Starbucks model of customer service, which isn't good or bad, it's just different than what the Mug is, which is why I'm not going to bother comparing the two - they're too different. That said, I liked the eccentricity of this place. The guy taking my coffee, I think, was messing with me, which I didn't like, because I just don't "get" it when people do that, so I thought he was just being a jerk, but he was kidding around. That, and some greasy looking dude kept looking at the bookshelf by my table, which was distracting, especially because he kept leaning over my table (and my laptop, and my drink) to select books. I ordered a mocha, which was WAY more bitter than I'm used to a mocha tasting. I guess it was decent, but it's not like any mocha I've ever had. I'm not a coffee aficionado by any means, so maybe it's too... complicated for me to get. I'll come in here and buy drinks and stuff still because it's in walking distance to my place and it's a nice place to get work done, but maybe I just can't fully appreciate the Mug for what it's supposed to be.

  • Cody C.

Coffee, food, music, service, people are all great. I just wish it had more seating. If there were cool tables and stuff it would be a 5. It sucks giving this a 4 because I really do love this place, but unfortunately it is not "as good as it gets." I have 4 friends who all love to slam coffee, but we would never go there together to sit because I don't think there would be enough space. That magazine "Found" was really cool. The mugs for when you order for "here" are great. There really are a lot of great things about this place. If you want to stop in somewhere cool and get a strong coffee that doesn't taste burnt or sour, go here.

The service has improved exponentially over the past couple of years. The coffee has always been stellar. Roasted on-site and just damn good. We often take home a bag. The bagel sandwiches are also worth the purchase. (And as an example of the service improving-- no longer will the lady barista sigh heavily and roll her eyes when you order one.) I'm currently addicted to the mexican latte and accompanying foam art.

I love this place. This, along with Bomber, are one of the best finds of Ypsilanti. Service here is always friendly, coffee is always delicious, $1 scones are awesome, and everything is just really laid back. Yeah, parking can get weird, but I've always been able to find a parking spot nearby.

My first and only vistit to the Ugly Mug I was completely turned off. The pretentious wait person seemed like she would have rather been having open heart surgery sans anesthetic than be working there. I had a cappuccino that was completely sub-par, it was more like a latte and it did not satiate my craving what-so-ever. The lighting was dim and the place was very cold (It was winter time). It just gave me the bad juju, you know what I mean? This place also seems to cater to a night crowd- i think they don't even open until 8 am. Now what self respecting coffee joint is not open for the early birds? They are in a perfect location for passers by, too, being at Hamilton which leads to 94. Oh well, their loss I guess. I much recommend Bombadill's or Cafe Luwak over this hipster, cooler than thou crowd.

After living in Portland, Oregon for several years and visiting Eugene, Oregon few times, I instantly liked this place. Quite hippy and weird in a good way. This is a great place to sit and enjoy the coffee and quite a happy change from the coffee shops in Ann Arbor. This coffee place got a unique personality. Everything is great except one thing. Where is the ugly mug? By default the staff serves coffee in the paper /plastic cup (or whatever material is that). They should ask if the customers wants the coffee for here or to go. I ilke my coffee in the ugly mug. ;-) not any other. Besides that the place is cool.

This place is great if you like laid back cafes. I'm too old, too unfashionable, and too narrow-mindedly academic for the early-to-mid-twenties hipster scene, so I think I'm positioned well enough to disagree about it being for hipsters only. It's true that if you aren't a hipster and you are looking for affirmation from 20-something baristas, you aren't really going to find it here. But they answer questions about the menu without upselling you, give you the frequently changing wireless password with no attitude, and have good food and coffee. If that doesn't sound like enough, you can leave a parking space and some table real estate for me. I mean, I drove here from Dearborn today so I could get some work done. It is a fine establishment. One drawback: it took me approximately 3 hours over the course of 2 visits to get the internet to work for me. It worked when I abandoned my attempts to check my email and tried nytimes.com instead, which kicked me to a page where I could accept the terms. [Edit: I talked to a senior software engineer at Google about wtf was going on here, and we eliminated all hypotheses that aren't based on stupid implementation of security settings on the router. I'm leaving this here, at this point, in case whoever owns the cafe wants me to explain what was going wrong, and why they'd need to talk to whoever's responsible for their router settings about it.] Is that a drawback? That sounds like a drawback of my taking so long to try a different website. No drawbacks.

I use to enjoy this place immensely and the baristas once were extremely cordial, albeit seemingly never wanting to move beyond a snails pace. But that was okay. In the past couple of years or so, the staff has become really arrogant and snobby with the continued pace of a sloth. Recently, I've had more than a handful of experiences that left a bad taste in my mouth, no pun intended. That being said, the young gentleman who I believe is the manager, is always great and professional. The coffee itself is can range from excellent to poor. The consistency is just not there. The food is alright. I love that they carry Barry's Bagels! Yum. As for the atmosphere, it's alright. Definitely a "hipster" place but there are people from all walks of life found inside. This has never detoured me though. The sad thing is that some days this place is 5 stars and for this I will continue to stop by when I find myself in Ypsi. After all, it is the best coffee in Ypsi, even when not that great. I just hope they get some better staff or I might stop coming all together.

Nice place! I loved my vanilla latte (not too sweet and served in a glass). It was $4.50, but their credit card limit is $5, so I got my latte and a 50 cent sticker. Whatever, but I would have rather given the 50 cents as a tip. The variety of seating let me study at a small table while other patrons chatted on couches and stools. The one downside is it's pretty gritty. It's got that grungy coffee house vibe. Some people love it, but I know my husband isn't one of them, so I won't be bringing him here. Good place to study though.

"Woohoo! As good as it gets!" Indeed. They roast, they can pull a good shot of espresso (the veritable Holy Grail of coffee-dom), and the people that work there don't suck. In fact, the baristas are all laid back, knowledgeable about what they make, and most importantly, don't try to preach about how great they are. They just flat out make good coffee and they don't care if you know about it or not; the way it should be in my humble opinion. They also make killer cinnamon rolls. So yes, this is as good as it gets here in Michigan. I would actually put this place up against just about any shop I've been to. So sip up knowing that you're at the top of the mountain, so to speak, in the coffee world, even if you want to put milk and sugar in it.

I really love the coffee here. I think it is probably the best joe in the area - their espresso is very smooth and rich and they know how to brew it. The place is very tiny and cozy and there are comfortable places to hole up and study. It has nice ambiance reminiscent with cozy run-down furniture (apparently that's changed now?) and had that familiar feeling that kept me looking around to see if I would run into anybody I knew there. Unfortunately parking is impossible. Also, I was originally gonna dock them a star for being a smoking establishment but I hear they recently went non-smoking, so they get it back (yeah, I'm one of those).

I have mixed feelings about the Mug... one on hand I love that they roast their own coffee, and the scents produced make walking to and from Depot Town delightful. The kitchiness, handwritten signs and laid back cozy feelings brought by the decor and general ambiance- lovely. The bagel sandwiches, brownies, and good old cup o' joe- delicious. Also- definitely a nice little place that is fun to take friends from out of town to see, and make Ypsi look 500 times cooler. On the other hand, it is definitely a "hipster" place, and everyone is trying to out-hipster each other, including the staff. Almost every time I go, I get some sort of semi rude vibe or comment about one thing or another. For example, I was working on a google-doc with a project partner who got food and drink, and I asked to get on the wifi. I was told to buy something- but I didn't bring my wallet. The guy's response was "we're not the library, we're a coffee shop". Anyway, he gave me the wifi password "Just this once"... and I decided to save it on my computer forever. hahah, whoops!

My third visit to this place and every single time I walk right out! I am tired of driving to this place, park the car, stand in line, and never find a place to sit. Every table is occupied by a single person with a single cup of coffee purchased an hour ago. I guess between the inconsiderate patrons and inattentive staff you might as well buy gas station coffee(gasp).

Wow. Holy 1998! I mean this in a really good, comforting way. Walking into the Ugly Mug last week, I was greeted by an hour+ soundtrack of the Make-Up's singles collection, I Want Some. Hearing that record took me back to happy memories of hanging out at Vinyl Joe's (RIP) ten-ish years ago, picking up Make-Up and Mummies 7"s, just down the street from where the Ugly Mug sits today. The bearded fellow at the counter was super-sweet, helping my frazzled, chilly self by fixin' me up a soy chai with a perfect little dash of cinnamon on top. Later on, he suggested a vegan peanut butter cookie -- surprisingly tasty. It was nice and quiet in the back -- everyone was either working or studying, so I was able to zoom through a bunch of work with ease, while soaking up the drinkable + listenable comfort-food. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I haven't dropped in here since it went non-smoking. It was still OK to smoke here when I was going to EMU just a couple years back, which is probably part of why this didn't become a regular study spot. Now that it's smoke-free, I'm pretty positive this is going to become my new mini-office. Just keep the chai, vegan cookies, and great music, and I'm there.

Reviews for places like this always make me wonder at what point is something SO good that even someone not knowledgeable in that particular craft could sample it, and immediately identify with it's greatness.... ? Don't get too excited, this is just a philosophical setup, I'm not about to tell you Ugly Mugs coffee is that good. Make no mistake, I drink a TON of coffee and I do recognize some differences and have some opinions. But I've had a variety of things on Ugly Mugs menu a number of times, and nothing as wowed me that much. The drinks have been solid, but nothing I'd drive out of my way to get. Maybe I'm just not as evolved coffee-wise as some others. The place eclectic enough and probably what original coffee houses looked like. I liked the books, the sofa, and the cozy feel. It actually had a little patio that's quainter than most bar patios I've been on The crowd is mostly younger and a little artsy, but it varies and everyone seems to coexist pretty well. Honestly, nothing bothers me more than when I find something I really like and it's frequented by annoying ass people. I cannot say this is the case at the Ugly Mug... I should specify, I'm usually there someone where between 2-6pm. But everyone is typically pretty laid back and I don't recall too many cases of people being loud or obnoxious. One contributing factor might be the layout of the place... the flow is broken up so there are actually like 3 or 4 little lounge areas, not one big open area... I'm sure that cuts down on the noise drift. I have been waited on a few times where the person seemed less than thrilled to be there. And while I won't call the service rude, it can be really slow sometimes. Slow, as in, if there is more than one person in line, I get the impression from past experiences that I'm gonna be standing there for 10 minutes (probably not always true, but enough to make me aware that the service is not fast). -1 star. Getting in and out of the place is a hassle, and the parking lot that holds about 5 spaces is ridiculous. I know we're a little spoiled in most Michigan cities, but I guess that is also a reflection about how I feel about the place.. I'm not really willing to park a block away and walk there. All in all, it's a pretty cool place that is a decent place to grab a coffee and get some work done. I always seem to be able to find an outlet for my laptop when I need it, even on the patio.

They have some very unique coffee drink options, and their own coffee label; beans roasted on site. They use real ingredients (like real cocoa powder in the Mexican Latte vs. sugar syrup). The drinks I've had here are not overpowered by sugar like so many places seem to make them. You can actually still taste the coffee. Their parking lot is very small, but I will be going back to try some of the other drinks. If you love coffee, this place is worth checking out.

Best Coffee shop I know of. And I don't mean best around Ann Arbor, or best in Michigan, I mean best. They roast their own beans and have the best baristias around, in fact some of them are judges at the national barista competition. Their espresso is the best I've ever had. (Am I saying best a lot?) It's also the only place I know of that will brew your coffee in a Chemex or french press for you if you want. The only complaint I have ever heard from there is that it is smoky, but that has changed. The inside is now non-smoking and there is a covered patio for those of us who do smoke. It's my favorite establishment in the county. If you like coffee at all, you have to give it a try.

Ugly Mug probably was my primary coffee shop until Beezy's opened and while it still definitely up there, location makes it less convenient for me to stop there as often as before. Until I start attending EMU that is, I have taken a break from UM and had a chance to reflect on my experience there for a review. I mostly heard great review for this place by locals and students that would stop by there. Apparently it was trendy as well. At one point you could smoke in there, which was the reason why for about a year I didn't stop in. Once they made smoking indoors a no-no however, while I was waiting for my fiancé to get out of class I stopped in for a drink and to get a feel for the place. Initially... dark. Black is the color of choice here with muted colors as highlights, tables and chairs that just sort of blend in with the scenery and a low couch dominating one corner. Lots of books that probably were rejected from library donation due to being so old and unpopular line the walls, from classics to some of the trash that you see at your local pharmacies. Their pastry selection is small and their teas inconspicuously squeezed in between the register and aforementioned display case. The music here is different than your normal coffee shop. Sometimes I like the selections, sometimes I don't, but I can usually put on my headphones or go outside if the weather is nice. The only real issue is the smoking directly outside their front door. I don't like getting a whiff of someone's menthol lights before I walk into the place. Sort of ruins that initial great coffee smell. Apparently, baristas that told there are told they are the What in what's what. Once you get over the 'tude and get a cup of decent espresso - usually you're more than willing to be forgiving. My first cup, the espresso was much too bitter and I was turned off by it. For a while, I avoided it, but one day, passing by, I was jonsing for some caffeine. That time, it was great. And for the most part, generally the drinks are very good there. I have my favorite barista's and depending on who's greeting me at the register will alter my order - but everyone there seems to know what's what when it comes to espresso and drinks. In fact, I was a semi-regular there for a good 6 to 8 months and occasionally I still crave a nice drink from them. Their brewed coffee is always top notch and when I get my own coffee machine and grinder I will be buying some of their beans for sure.

The coffee and expresso drinks are usually great. But, there is an inconsistency; both with service and drinks. I kind of feel like I am rolling the dice each time. Couple of times, despite all efforts, I felt like an imposition. I definitely don't go there during busy hours. I am no hipster but, I gravitate to a relaxed and casual place and pace. Mug fits that. Wish it felt 'warmer' there.

This is one of the best cafes in Washtenaw County. Their baristas really know their way around espresso drinks...if you've never had milk-foam art, prepare to live! Also, if you get a coffee, order for "here" so you can experience the namesake ugly mugs. The atmosphere is everything I expected a coffee shop to be when I entered college. Comfy couches, people on laptops, board games on hand, extremely random art... Seriously, if you want a vacation from the yuppie coffee shops in Ann Arbor, come to the Ugly Mug.

Ok lets be fair here. I love this place (well loved when I lived in Ypsi). The lattes are to die for. But with that said -- A funny thing happened on the way to the espresso bar -- it was horrible. I got a double shot and it was bitter, the crema had a poor taste, and it went down like a ton of bricks. I am hoping that after two years away from Ypsi this was a fluke.... (I think it was, I actually pray it was). But the beans I bought there saved they day. I mean woza they are amazing (Mexican blend). Like knock your socks off, cuddle up with your coffee mug and look at it lovingly type of good. Since the remodel it feels a little more commercial in the place, but the no smoking atmosphere is a much welcome change. All in all, great coffee, usually great espresso, best coffee I have had in the States outside of the West Coast.

This place is great. In fact, I like this place more than I like Ritual Roasters in San Francisco. I used to stop by here inbetween appts and get coffee or sit and chat to a few people. The clientele is interesting and the staff is hot and great. The food is not that good, but it is so worth the trip if you are in the area. When I went they had all these creepy dolls hanging everywhere, but it was done very tastefully and just added to the character. The art is great, and the atmosphere is great. I think they have coffee too.

really laid back cafe, nice baristas, really local type of place last time i was there I saw a younger black james earl jones. he was having a latte a dave matthews fan showed up asking: "what's the deal with all the dudes in girl jeans?" AAWKKWARDDD

Perhaps the hippest place in Washtenaw County, for better or worse. I'll admit to spending my share of afternoons there early in undergrad, sucking down Almondjoys and other syrup-adulterated candy coffee. Under the guidance of coffee snob friends I've sworn off such bastardizations of espresso, and I find that I enjoy Uggo's drinks even more now without all the flavored distractions. Definitely surpasses Mighty Good and Comet in terms of quality of product, but the atmosphere is a nice departure. Truly passionate about coffee. Anytime I find myself in Ypsi I make sure to stop in for a while, and you should do the same.

I have a love-hate relationship with the Ugly Mug. On the one hand, they have tasty coffees and teas, yummy snacks, good (free) wireless network, and friendly, knowledgeable staff. I love the books in the shelf on the wall -- you'll find a copy of a catechism next to a book about athiesm , a book of '80s hairstyles for women and an old Nancy Drew novel. On the other hand, when they run out of something (like a type of tea) they can stay out for a while. I find the outside seats uncomfortable. The inside areas can get noisy between overly loud music, louder college students and screaming children. The parking lot is way too tiny (yes, I know: it actually HAS a lot) and can be scary to negotiate your way out. And the too short "summer" hours -- hopefully ending soon -- mean it's hard to stop and relax after work. I won't stop going there but it's no longer my number one coffeeshop.

I used to live almost across the street, and although I had a comfy couch and WI-FI of my own, I did 90% of my studying there. Plus, I was a smoker, so I was pumped that I had a cafe/study environment where I could light up. I think a lot of people went there for that reason-- where else can you smoke and drink coffee these days? Alas, they went non-smoking and cleaned up their act. Shiny new tables and chairs, lighting, etc. It's sad, because that was their appeal, and now it's almost like they are trying to be a different place. Still the same perfect cup of coffee and pretentious staff. Plus, I love that they have Zingerman's pastries. The muffins and bagels are so good! The prices are a tad bit steep, but they have punch cards, so if you frequent them enough then you will end up getting your moneys worth. And it's locally owned, so that is always a bonus.

If it means anything to anyone, it takes me 40 minutes for me to drive to the Ugly Mug, but drive I will because they have the best coffee on this side of the Mississippi, hands down. I love the atmosphere - the old lecture hall chairs and books and things. However, I am not a smoker, so it's not very often than I hang out there. Something about lung cancer makes it hard for me to enjoy my latte. I was there once, though, and I'm pretty sure that they have free wi-fi. That may not be a selling point, since Washtenaw at large is adopting the service, but it was nice when I had homework to do. I would recommend this place to anyone - coffee is really smooth, not bitter at all (like Starbucks/ERC), and it's usually pretty easy to park.

I wasn't sure I believed the other reviewers, but this really is the best coffee I have ever had in my entire life. Wow. I know it sounds like I'm exaggerating but I'm not-- it's that good. Service wasn't especially fast, but I went during my lunch break so I expected that to be the case... and even though I ordered to go, they made me latte art in the to-go cup. Be nice to the baristas, and they'll be really, really nice to you back. Love.

Best damn coffee in the area. They went nonsmoking and now you don't stink after enjoying your caffeine treat. Um, it's a coffee shop. The favored one of Ypsi hipsters. Since they've gone smoke-free, people with less hipster cred have started walking in. Who cares? Everything except the first line is kind of irrelevant, because that's all that really matters.

Cute Joint! I've been going here since high school... but not a regular by any means. A lot has changed since high school but they still have great coffee. Am not a huge coffee drinker, so to walk into a place that makes me crave coffee is a good sign! I love the couches and random seating selection they have, the art work on the walls, and best of all the seating area they have outside in the summer time. I guess you could call it the "coffee garden" . They also serve all their drinks in random coffee cups and mugs, no matching scheme going on there, it really gives a feeling of homeyness.

This place is as good if not better then Rituals in San Francisco, Murky's in Washington DC, Intelligentsia in Chicago. Baristas are knowledgeable and truly care about coffee quality. Excellent coffee like this is close to impossible to come across, unless you roast and pull your own. If you are in Ann Arbor or general area not stopping by this place would be a crime.

A place with college charm, yet inviting to everyone. I love the environment - laid back but still productive. The baristas are knowledgeable, friendly and good at what they do. The coffee is amazing and the espresso is darn near the best I've ever had. It's a great place to grab a book and relax.

I live in Ann Arbor and trek out to Ypsi a couple times a week for The Ugly Mug. The coffee is fantastic. Never had anything but a real good cup here, and it's a bargain, under 2 bucks for a cup and $0.65 for a refill. The Ugly Mug is a good alternative to Ann Arbor's artisan coffee king, Comet, and much more affordable as well, but the baristas are generally not as nice, and definitely don't place the same premium on service as they do in Nickels' Arcade.

I visited this place today and was surprised to see how extremely non-smoking it is. Even their "heated" patio is non-smoking. I walked in and felt a pang of longing because they no longer had the random pieces of second-hand furniture adorning each table. Instead there are uniform black tables with black chairs. It seemed there were less books on the shelves, and looked a little cleaned up. They also no longer serve crepes. However, their espresso drinks are still amazing, and I don't smoke anymore. I had a grand time with my boyfriend playing Pass the Pigs on the last of the old furniture -- a crooked table by the bathroom with wooden chairs. His coffee was sporting a green mug covered in flowers, with "Starbucks Coffee" stamped on the bottom. Very funny. Four stars simply for their espresso. No complaints.

One of the coolest little coffee shops I have ever been too. It's little, you walk in and it is so laid back, lots of vintage furniture and decorations. You order your coffee and it's served in all kinds of different mugs. Some of them like your Granny had or like a bad Christmas gift. But its so fun to see what your going to get. The coffee is good too, I had the cappuccino. And they have good homemade desserts and pastries. Delicious. You can sit in all kinds of random seating choices. They have wi-fi. And they have smoking, which is great for all you smokers who are getting banned at other cafes. I love this little place, if it wasn't so far from me I would frequent it all the time.

When exiled to the dark hole that is southeastern Michigan this summer, there was one bright spot: the Ugly Mug. I am a smoker. I appreciated the fact that there was somewhere I could have my cigarettes and coffee in peace without somebody insisting I was giving them cancer. Yes, the baristas are arrogant. Really, that's the sign of a good cafe. The pretentiousness of a cafe usually indicates its patrons. Cafes in small college towns with no other claims to fame (save for maybe that bizarre tower) should have a snooty cafe where the would-be intellectuals and other social rejects can hang out. It's not only acceptable, but expected. I wouldn't have it any other way. Yes, their coffee is decent. The best in bloody Michigan, really. And, the nice thing was to find something with a little personality in an otherwise boring and uninspiring Midwestern town.

The best cafe in Ypsi, in the county and probably in the state of Michigan. The coffee is excellent - they really know what they are doing. The atmosphere is funky and fun, but there are also quiet area for reading and writing. This is everything a coffeehouse should be. I wish it was in Ann Arbor, because it's kind of out of the way for me, but defiantly worth the trip! Great place.

Located just a few blocks from Eastern's College of Business, this coffee shop is the perfect way to get a little bit of fresh air before splurging on coffee to get you through the next study session. The coffee looks great, tastes delicious, and the atmosphere inside the shop is fun and inviting.

Now that it's non-smoking, Ugly Mug is a great place to go! The coffee is brewed to perfection, the staff knows what the heck they're doing and there's a generally laid back vibe to the place. The hipster contingent can be a little overwhelming on your first visit, but don't be intimidated :)

I don't drink coffee, and I don't smoke. However, The Ugly Mug was one of my absolute favorite spots in Michigan. A good collection of random used books line the room, old bus station seats, and good looking hipsters. A decent selection of tea, and they take the same care with their hot chocolate as with their coffee. Those in the know say the coffee is to die for, roasted on site, a different mug every time. The bad news. They renovated. Now it looks like every other hip coffee shop, with modern furniture and chrome siding on the walls. It's also non-smoking now, which makes my happily pink lungs that much happier. However, it has cut down significantly on the good looking hipster crowd.

I'm sorry to say I had a really disappointing experience here today. Based on the reviews it looks like people really like Ugly Mug so maybe I'll give it a second try. I don't drink coffee so when I go to a coffee shop I'm just looking for a nice mellow place to hang out, grab a drink or a snack and get some work done. Ugly Mug failed on all counts unfortunately, my boyfriend did like his coffee though. The girl making sandwiches messed up our bagel, when my bf pointed this out she got kind of defensive and totally did not apologize and handle the situation (her mistake) like she should have. (A quote: So, do you like, want me to make it again?) The music in the space was good but just as I was finally getting into a working groove, the people behind the counter starting messing with the tunes. Turning the volume up and down, switching to new songs in the middle of other songs, it was really disruptive and distracting. The worst was when they started cackling over some pictures on their friend's computer for like 20 minutes straight. This is a little space so the laughing was once again disruptive and annoying. To top it all off, the space itself is freezing so I just couldn't get comfortable, every time the door to the front or the patio opened a gust of cold air filled the room. Sorry Ugly Mug, I'm all about supporting small businesses but I left that place today thinking it just seemed so unprofessional. You seemed to have the best potential for replacing my beloved Diesel Cafe in Boston, but alas, it was not meant to be.

The Ugly Mug is conveniently located on my twice-weekly walk from EMU's main campus to the business campus on Michigan Ave, so I like to stop in and get a warm caffeinated pick-me-up on the way. The whole vibe is just just trendy enough to be hip without being overbearing. The coffee is well done and inevitably served by a barista with an attitude (would you rather have it any other way?), and the muffins always make for a tasty mid-day snack. I dig it.

This place is as good if not better then Rituals in San Francisco, Murky's in Washington DC, Intelligentsia in Chicago. Baristas are knowledgeable and truly care about coffee quality. I love the ugly mug. Excellent coffee, roasted on site. Friendly service, good atmosphere/music. They allow smoking. Pretty much perfect in my opinion.

    (1)

It's worth the trip... cool place.

  • Julia D.

I'm out.

Thanks! Leo C.
