Went to Picano's for the first time last Friday and truly enjoyed the experience. Hostess greeted us immediately and offered to check our coats. We were seated in a nice booth as I requested at the time of making our reservations and did not have to wait long for our server, Kaley, to introduce herself to us. Kaley was very personable and very knowledgeable of the menu. Her recommendations were spot on! I had the stuffed eggplant which was delicious and my husband had the linguine in clam sauce which he said was the best he has eaten. We also had their chowder which, too, was very good. For dessert we had their cannolis and tiramisu which were delicious! We will definitely return and, hopefully, will have Kaley as our server.

Ugh. I regret having to write this review because this has always been one of my favorite italian restaurants. The past two times have been less than delightful in every sense. Lipstick on the wine glass, hair in salad, decreased portions. The chicken Marsala was 90 percent mushrooms, ten percent chicken. Pasta Ala Picano was very different than previous visits. We were here to celebrate a family birthday the last time, and were thoroughly disappointed.

What the hell happened to one of my three favorite Italian restaurants?? Had the gnocchi which were cooked good but the sauce was nothing like it was a couple years ago. Blah, slightly bitter tomato sauce. Is there a new cook? Are they using cheaper tomatoes? Did they change the recipe? We were totally disappointed with the taste. I don't mind paying $15 when the food is good but this time I felt completely ripped off. And seriously, $8.25 for a glass of house Cabernet (not that good)???? I won't return and I won't be telling friends anymore that Picano's has good, almost like authentic home-made sauce. As others have said, PIC ANOther restaurant.

Every time I eat at Picano's, I wonder why I don't eat there more often. Oh, right... it's not around the corner from home. But I always get a tasty meal there! Last week was no exception. I had the arrabiata sauce on angel hair with a meatball. It was yummy. And that arrabiata means business... get it if you like spicy food. Hubby started with the delicate Italian 'chicken noodle' soup; it was light and delicious. The salad with house (Italian) dressing is delicious and refreshing. We were a party of four and we all enjoyed our meals and look forward to meeting there again soon!

It's unfortunate I can only rate this restaurant with five stars. The food was excellent and our wait person "Steve" couldn't have been more personable and attentive. If you're looking for an authentic Italian meal and stellar customer service, look no further than Picano's.

Ordered the veal Sam for lunch it was excellent Service was very good however the only downside I have to say is The portion was small. Which would have been okay but it didn't come with anything. No pasta no salad no vegetables no soup. So even though it was very good I left hungry. My suggestion to them would be throw in a little bit of pasta and a little bit of vegetables. It would cost them $.50 and people would go home full

Did you ever have a sauce that had such a strong burned taste to it that it wouldn't leave you? After some Italian travels I'm always looking for an authentic Italian spaghetti bolognese. I always call ahead and ask the Italian restaurant if they have an authentic bolognese sauce. They always fib and say absolutely yes. The closest I've come to a good one is Cafe Cortina, but still no cigar. Picano's said theirs was the best. Great service (Tyler), very tasty basic house salad dressing although a little too portion controlled and hot bread. I still had the taste of burnt sauce in my mouth long after the meal. Not kidding, even after a mint. My date's lasagna was only OK. It had very crispy rubbery cheese edges and top. $66.45 included a couple of house wines each, before tip. I never send problem food back to the chef (you know why). I JUST DO NOT GO BACK. If anyone knows of an authentic ragu bolognese sauce, please leave a tip/response. I'm running out of places to try.

We eat at Picano's maybe twice per quarter. As has been mentioned in other reviews, the decor is a bit dated but not bad. I have always had very good luck with the food quality; I tend to get their homemade gnocchi, which is excellent and I generally get it with the arrabiato sauce...if you want to be a cheese glutton, they will bake a layer of cheese on top of the pasta, yum! We now occasionally take our 18 month old daughter here and have have found them to be very helpful and friendly in preparing her small plates.

My experience with Picano's happened MANY years ago. I have a bit to vent about that experience, and now, with a service like Yelp, I can. Let me preface this a bit, I've read a few of the reviews and seems like they're up to their "old" habits (at least when they have buffets). When my mother passed away, we decided on having the wake at Picano's since it was close to the cemetery and known for good food. They put our group into a private room. That was nice. I ordered a buffet, as recommended, for over the amount of people we anticipated. It was a few simple dishes, pasta, antipasto, sausages, bread, etc. They NEVER replenished the food. It was EMBARRASSING! I begged and begged with the staff to do so, but they wouldn't... Their answer was, "Sure, in a minute," to no avail. Just so you know, it's not as if I told them to cap our food costs or that I couldn't exceed a certain amount of money. It was antipasto! They WOULDN'T replenish it -- NOT ONCE! I haven't been back since, and would never dream of spending mine or anyone else's money there ever again. That horrible experience tainted me for life. I would recommend going ANY other place than Picano's for your dining experience or event. It's sad because I typically like to support local restaurants and businesses -- especially with services like Yelp. Thanks for making my mom's funeral THAT much more fun!

Kind of a late review but since im new to this site and I havent forgotten my experience here I had to post my review. New Year's eve 2007. Where do I begin...Me and my wife had to wait 30 min to be seated even though we had a reservation. After we were seated we then waited probably another 30 min just to be acknowledged by a waiter, which only happened due to me getting up and informing the busboy! But this was just the beginning, here comes the food (or lack thereof). If I recall it was a limited fixed menu. After waiting for ages for the salad, we were told that they had run out of the minestrone on the menu and literally brought out some soup that had been thrown together with "whatever they had in the fridge". Awful. Then we were served a plate of pasta that literally tasted like egg noodles and ketchup! (yes that was a Goodfellas reference). Disgusting. I felt like I was eating at Hell's Kitchen when everything goes wrong. I would probably have sold my soul to watch Gordon Ramsey go back into that kitchen. To put an end to our kitchen nightmare I told the waitress (after looking for her) that I wanted the check was not interested in my main course. Not even an apology. Wow.

Picano's has been around forever and I can't figure out why. Maybe it's name recognition? Maybe because it's cheap-ish rent in this particular part of Troy? Whatever the reason...I will say it's not the service or the food (for the most part). Last Easter the family decided to save Mom from having to cook for the family. After much protest, since Mom likes to cook for the holidays, we decided on Picano's. Pasquale's in Royal Oak was our first choice because the food is consistantly good and the service is top notch. Unfortunately, they where closed for the holiday. So...the idea was to save time, save having to clean up and lets head out as a family for the holiday. We made reservations because we knew it would be busy on a big family holiday...little did we know, reservations where not needed even though the woman on the phone told me Easter Sunday was reservations only. We arrived 10 minutes ahead of time and walked into a packed, congested lobby. We promptly gave our name and proceeded to stand around for 45 minutes, waiting our turn. Granted, we had a party of 9 but Picano's huge and since we had a reservation, figured they would plan for all their parties, large and small. I heard many people speaking to the hostess who didn't have reservations and had no problem getting a seat. A party of four here...party of two there. We where finally sat at a table set for 6, squeezing in 3 more chairs with each bumping into patrons at other tables. We where packed in like sardines. Nobody was even remotely comfortable. Since it was a holiday, they had a huge buffet set up. When we went up, most of the pans where empty with the exception of some sausage and roasted potatos. We each got a plate of some salad and decided we would go up in a little bit, with the plan of going up later. When we did go back up, more pans where filled and what I selected (ravioli and sausage) was really good. Some family wanted the prime rib, so I was the one who stood in the 20 people deep line to get some carved. The carver had about a 3 inch piece left when I finally made my way up to him and by this point, I was frustrated by the shoddy service, the long wait and the chair waiting for me that backed up to a 400 pound woman. I stared him down unimpressed. "Just put the whole piece on my plate because I'm done waiting." The whole day was just awful. Good ravioli couldn't save this shitty holiday meal. Mom was equally as pissed and vowed to never have a holiday meal away from the homestead again. For a place that has been around for so long, I would hope that they would know customer service. A dinner for a smaller party, maybe but don't ever plan to hit this place on a holiday. Just terrible. And WAY overpriced.

Overhyped. Better places almost everywhere. I live in Troy and have been here twice. First time underwhelmed, second time to make sure the first time was an anomaly. It wasn't. Won't be back.

Great family Italian food. Our table ordered the antipasti special, veal satimbocca, chicken marsala, lobster ravioli, and chicken parmiagana. All the portions were large, and food was tasty. Lots of big parties were eating around us. Its Italian food done not like what we get in San Francisco. This was plain and simple good eating.

  • Dave B.

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. The bread was really tasty with the oil and parmesan cheese. I was disappointed that I had to ask for a wine menu, they also did not have a separate drink menu to browse through. Kind of odd, I thought. They also were not prepared with a dinner specials menu and had to bring that a few minutes later. The service was pretty good and the food was delicious! I ordered Chicken Cannelloni on their specials menu. My only complaint of the food was it lacked sufficient sauce. I could have used some more by the time I was 3/4 of the way done with the meal. Although I would have liked to give this place 5 stars, I think 4 is most appropriate because it was not perfect.

I have dined here a few times but the last time I went was the most incredible meal. I live on the East Coast, so it's hard to order seafood anywhere else. BUT I ordered their salmon with veggies and greek yogurt. I cannot wait to go back to Michigan and order it again. We had a fabulous waitress too!

Unfortunately, this place has become irrelevant. They close at 10, I pulled in at 9:50 and the owner ran inside and locked the doors. When I called, I asked what time he closed and he hung up on me. If you close at 10, you're still open at 9:50. Last time I came in it was 9:15, by the time I got my food it was after 9:30, well they served me the wrong food and had no kitchen staff there to fix it! I'm so done. I grew up 2 blocks from this place so it's sad because it's always been epic since it opened. Picanos is DONE. Mark...my...words.

Not good service. Manger is very nice lady, but the food and service were not as expected. Very nice place and with a nice atmosphere, but wish I could say the same about the food.

I really enjoyed eating at this traditional no frills Italian restaurant. The food was exceptional and the service was outstanding. Our waitress Rachel was attentive and cheerful. How refreshing. The 1/2 off wine special on Tuesday and Thursday night is an example of the good value this establishment can offer. I had the eggplant Marsala that was a special and it was the best eggplant I've had anywhere. I highly recommend it.

  • Alexis S.

Had a situation there last week, where we came with two parties. One over tipped and one was a little short and the waitress came back and said something. One of the parties was older and a little confused so it ended up being embarrassing. It was classless.. Sometimes you have to give old ppl the benefit of the doubt...

It was our first time eating here. Food was really good but service was very lacking. It took 20mins-1/2 hour to get our salads and soup. The waitress didn't once offer to refill our waters. We asked for more breadsticks and it took a 1/2 hour to get them. One of us didn't receive our side pasta with the entree. The waitress never came back to check on us, we had to flag her over to our table whenever we needed something. Then it took forever to get our check and receive change back. We were literally there for almost 2 hours because of slow service.

Been here so many times that I can't even count and I finally decided to share this amazing gem. We try to dine at Picano's at least once a week. The food is delicious! It's very authentic which is rare and hard to find in Michigan. You can never go wrong with anything you order on the menu. My wife and daughter love this place. The bread is addicting! The owners are so pleasant and welcoming as well. Make sure you save room for delicious tiramisu! Mouth is watering just writing this review!

Best Italian food around. I'm originally from New Jersey which has a big Italian community. So I'm use to eating authentic Italian food, not that Olive Garden crap. FINALLY I found a great place that was right under my nose. The food was amazing, the service was outstanding. I plan on being a regular at Picanos. Delicious. Quality & homemade.

Very good nice folks however they did not hang our coats but did for other guest. This is obviously a place folks have gone to for years you could feel that if they did not know you you were not AS welcomed....but thanks for buying. The food was ok nothing I haven't had better somewhere more friendly. I will probably never come again.

Absolutely amazing service and food! Truly authentic Italian food at a great price and our waitress Jen was superb! My colleagues and I were in Troy for only one week on a business trip and we made sure to return to this restaurant several times. We had the opportunity to meet the owner and must say he made us feel extremely welcome. I can say without a doubt that if i return to Troy, this will be the first place I choose to have a meal.

I love this place. Traditional Italian fare. All of there pasta sauces are out of bounds. They serve a bean salad and delicious bread before dinner (which I could make my meal on its own and be satisfied). It's a great place for parties, we've been going there for my grandpas birthday for 10 years now and everybody is always satisfied. I love picano's, especially the palomino sauce. Yum!

We have been going here for years. We LOVE the family style dinners on Monday night with entertainment. One time the owners niece who is an opera singer got up and sang. Brought tears to our eyes. The food is fantastic. No one can make fettucini Alfredo like the momma in the kitchen. The salad dressing is to die for. Always fresh and crisp. We have had several parties here and would highly recommend them.

Have wanted to go here for a while, looks appealing. Today stumbled upon a $5 off coupon in the Somerset gazette, thought now is my chance. Walked in at 5:20 on 8-12-13, no hostess in site..so we waited, and a very nice lady welcomed us & sat us in a nice booth. Kaley was our server & super sweet, positive & very efficient. My bride wanted to try the pollo marsala, which included soup or salad, veggies & a side of pasta. $14.95 It was good, not as sweet as other places , which was okay, plus plenty of mushrooms & one large chicken breast , cut thin to be two. I ordered the Lasagna ,which also included soup or salad $16.95 It was good & had a nice blending of ingredients & the layers were dominant . I chose the minestrone soup, was was loaded with veggies & a nice deep red broth. Kaley also brought us out a very nice basket of flavorful bread, with olive oil & some northern marinated beans. Love that they honor the $5 coupon per entree [ limit 4 max] Kaley encouraged us to come back & try the tiramisu

My wife and I went here for a birthday dinner recently. The service and food were both excellent. Our server Steve was kind, fast, and helpful. We both really enjoyed our entrees. I had the fettuccini Alfredo and she had the chicken Parmesan. We also had a capucino and split a cannoli. This was my wife's first visit and she already said we are going back again! What a wonderful dinner we had!

Picano's is the best Italian food in the area! I have no clue why they dont have more reviews and 5 stars. They have the best alfredo and manicotti ever, they also have fresh pasta, amazing appetizers, and palomino sauce! It's a little bit of an older crowd but it is phenomenal!!

Lots and lots of food... Wow, this place was great. Awesome food. They had it going on. If you're ever in for a great feast this is the place to go. The service was great and they treated us special. I would recommend this place to all.......

I don't have much good or bad to say about this place, it's your standard family Italian restaurant. I had chicken Marsala. Our waitress kaylee was really good.

  • Brandon S.

We met some friends here for dinner. The place is lacking in decor, inside and out. It is in desperate need of full makeover. The food was solid. It was also reasonably priced. You get a lot with your meal. The bread basket had some nice options in it. The wine list is limited, but has a lot of affordable options on it. I did the create my own past option. I chose spaghetti noodles, garlic and olive oile, topped with sausage and cheese. The food was good. There was plenty of cheese and sausage on top. The noodles were prepared properly. You can get a good meal here, I would just not go here for a romantic or important meal. The decor is just too dated. Our server was friendly and helpful.

Did not go here under the best of circumstances, as it was my Grandma's Funeral Dinner. We had a room all to ourselves and the staff was very, very good. Very attentive to everyones wants and needs. I cannot say enough good things about the wait staff! The bread, soup and salad were wonderful. I thought the meat sauce for the pasta was a bit generic in taste. But, the chicken marsala was very good.

  • Crystal S.

This is such a great restaurant! Wonderful service and food. Good for a date night. I had the chicken parmesan. Along with that came fresh baked bread, my choice of soup or salad, a side of pasta in meat sauce, and crispy green beans. The green beans were the vegetable of the day. I had the minestrone soup which was very tasty. My fiancé had the eggplant parmesan and he said that it was very good. Menu had a lot of variety and they also had daily specials. Can't wait to go back!

Now known as Picano's Italian Grille. Very good, authentic Italian. The best I have found in the Troy/Royal Oak, Mich. area. Quality salad and the homemade garlic bread sticks are far superior to Olive Garden. It is nice to be able to choose the pasta and sauce pairing; I always enjoy the Chicken Linguini Alfredo.

I learned about Picano's from a college friend of mine. I love Italian food and was delighted to find this fine restaurant. The food is excellently prepared and has wonderful flavor; they even serve a nice complimentary appetizer of beans, olive oil and spices. The waitstaff is professional and courteous. The room is comfortable and has a convivial atmosphere without being noisy. Picano's is a great place to go for a special evening of fine Italian food and the company of friends.

Have eaten at Picano's with small and large groups several times over the last 7 years and the place has been consistently very good with both food and service. There have been occasional missteps, but overall, I am always very happy. They catered our wedding and my side of the family is Italian - the food was Sicilian-approved - not an easy endorsement to come by. Love the meatballs, artichoke/lemon appetizers, the cannelloni when they have it, the minestrone, the chicken marsala and chicken piccata, eggplant parmigiano, stuffed shells, seafood pastas and veal - all very good. The tiramisu, and orange/pineapple cake are dessert faves.

Second night out in Detroit for a review. I'm new in town, so I am just going to go wherever the locals recommend. This time, I was recommended Picano's. There was a lot of things I liked about this place. It was real Italian. I didn't meet the owner, but I asked what his name was and my very Italian host told me his name was "Dominic Picano." Of course. This is real-deal family Italian. But it wasn't spectacular. The guys who took me were a little embarrassed. They said Mr. Picano has trouble keeping chefs, so the food quality occasionally varies wildly. The atmosphere and the service was very good, so I am going to give them another try. Hopefully, the right chefs will be on duty when I get there!

A really good consistent family restuarant. Pasta's are good. Chicken Parm is very good. Manicotti is a favorite at our house. Meatballs are very good. We've never had a bad meal here. Almost always get takeout, but inside it's clean. As far as upscale - we don't have upscale italian food in the area since Lepanto in RO closed. Artie Oliverio also shut his doors a year or so ago.. His place, Maria's on Walnut lake, has been closed for a while. Supposed to reopen. I think Larcos is closed too. Yes, you can go to Andiamo. It's pretty good, but it's to much like a chain.

I grew up in Troy, but have never been to Picano's. Someone my husband works with recommended we go there for great Italian. Wish we hadn't gone to be honest with you. This restaurant needs a major makeover! The furniture is VERY dated. The carpet, furniture and decor on the walls are all very worn and stained. We were sitting at a corner table and just had this musty smell around us. I'm sure it was from the carpet and dirty walls. Quite digusting. And the food itself, very mediocre. The service, average. I will not be going back to Picano's.

    (2)
  • Melissa Y.

I looked at the prices and my first thought - "This isn't much cheaper than what we get in SF." So much for real America... Then I read the fine print. Each entree comes with soup or salad, vegetables, potato, AND pasta. Wow. I ordered the chicken marsala for my main dish. The chicken was cooked perfectly. The portions were enormous and after a full day of travel, just what I needed to officially kick off my time in the D. PS - Free valet FTW!

  • Katherine H.

Good food. They have a decent blend of middle and southern Italian cuisines and a reasonable wine list. Service is very good when they are not crowded - Tuesday or Wednesday nights are very nice. If the parking lot is packed, you might be waiting a while. If it's not too busy, the chefs will customize food for food allergy people - we have caeliac, so some dishes require a bit of love. No problems with that aspect of things. Desserts are underwhelming. This is a good, middle-of-the-road restaurant that happens to be one of the few places you can get something without red sauce in the Detroit area.

I came here recently with a group of 14 individuals. From start to finish, our dinner lasted over 3 hours. The service was slow and our waitress confused everybody's orders and bills right from the get-go. It was terribly frustrating. The only thing that did not get messed up was the type of wine I ordered. My appetizer and salad were good, however the main dish was nothing spectacular. It was a special they were running, chicken piccata, which is not listed on their regular menu. The chicken was dry and there was nothing great about it, except some thin sauce thrown on it with some mushrooms and spiced potatoes on the side, and a few pieces of broccoli. I could have prepared that in my own kitchen. My dessert was a cannoli about the size of my pinky finger. Because of the size of our group, there was an 18% gratuity tacked onto the bill. Extremely slow service with several errors on a slow evening (it was a Wednesday) did not warrant 18%, but I gave it anyway. The waitress was so confused that she tried giving change to a man who had not even paid his bill yet. I do not feel like what I ate that evening was worth what I paid. I am very hesitant about recommending this restaurant to others. It was a huge letdown because I had been looking forward to a great experience at an upscale restaurant.

If you're in the mood for some italian homestyle cooking, eat here.... the portions are large, too... first, a bread basket with olive oil, parmesan, and a complimentary bean dish..... entrees come with soup or salad, pasta plate, and vegetables and potatoes. For appetizers, the calamari fritti was really excellent, flash fried (not heavy or oily) in a peppered batter and topped with some lemon, served with a cold cocktail sauce--- a fresh change from the traditional marinara!! We also ordered the spiedini, that was really good, and made fresh, not soggy at all. House salad was good, but it did seem a little wilted... but the dressing was great. Then for dinner, I got the veal scallopini with mushrooms and artichokes in a lemon sauce. However, the sauce seemed a little more like marsala than lemon sauce, but it was still excellent. The mushrooms were fresh, not frozen. The veal was tender and thin, very clean meat. Finally, for dessert--- unbelievable key lime cheesecake! Overall, it was a good meal, however our waitress was just a tad slow. Would definitely go back!

I really love this place. I was in town to meet some friends and take care of some work. A few friends suggested this place, since I was living in a western suburb, this place was a little far to get to and with the heavy snow that day it was a LONG drive .... halfway there I was wondering to myself if this place was even worth it. It definitely was. Really good Italian food, gives you the feeling of home cooked food ..... great sauces, the spicy italian sausages and the meatballs are to die for. All in all I think it is one of the better Italian places in the Metro Detroit area.

I saw another review say this place was overhyped...I disagree...I have never heard anyone say it was some upscale gourmet place. It's a family restaurant...and the food is always excellent when I go. The ambience is great, it's clean and spacious...soft music, plenty of space to sit. The prices are really reasonable for what you do get...each meal comes with a bunch of extras and I always end up overfull and taking stuff home. The meatballs are fabulous...and so are the stuffed shells. As a matter of fact everything I have had was VERY good. It is a place that can be good for groups or just one person... It is a favorite Italian place that I love to visit when I have the chance.

  • Richard F.

OK. It is what it is and it ain't what it ain't. It is not a gourmet restaurant. It is a family place that serves nice meals prepared properly. I do agree with the review that said it was "over-hyped." This place is not a palace and Michelin will never give it stars, but if you want a nice veal dish, some pasta, a nice meal complete with soup salad and vegetables, you just can't go wrong here. I like the pasta fagiola soup, the baked pasta dishes that can be prepared with spicy peppers, the veal dishes and the chicken parmagianna. The Italian bread and the garlic bread is good too. A nice bottle of Chianti and we are all set.

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
