This Coney Island is "The Place". It even says so on the sign. Right next to the rotunda. Damn fine breakfast food. Best bet is to get something ultra-fattening like eggs, bacon, sausage, and probably a coney dog for good measure. This place has been here since Detroit had suburbs. Come get some delicious and greasy Detroit-style Coney grub.

I guess we should have known that something was amiss when we visited the Senate last night (a Saturday, at 7 p.m.) and the place was almost empty. It is sad to see the decline of a once favorite place. It has been going downhill for the past few years...we would return once in a while to see if it had regained it's mojo. Last night was our last visit, we won't be going back. The food quality was not good and the orders had much smaller portions and high prices ($25.00 for an order of broasted chicken, that btw had the smallest chicken pieces that I have ever seen...one breast cut into three pieces and a gyro dinner with soggy fries and one pop.) I am not sure what happened at the Senate. Did the ownership change? We won't be going back.

Used to be a great deal and decent little Coney joint, just went in now and ordered breakfast 2 omelets cost me $18.00 seriously? They charge you for hash brown's every other restaurant gives you with your order.....and food is not good. How do you screw up a mushroom and Swiss omelet?

This place is ABSOLUTLEY discusting! The waitresses are slow and I asked one for jalapeños with my nachos and she didn't even know what jalepenos were! She asked me what they looked like and she braught me banana peppers! Like seriously? Come on now! Also, Their cooks don't use gloves, I literally watched one of them picked his nose scratch his head and stuck his hands in the bag of fries to throw them in the fryer! That's when I got up and left! This place is Absolutly terrible from the food to the service!

Another place to add to my "Places that suck" list. I thought all Coney Islands were pretty much the same, but Leo's is alot better. My friends son ordered cheese sticks w/ Ranch, and he said the Ranch was watered down. The Coneys didn't taste as good as Leo's, and there was no ketchup on the tables. C'mon people it's a damn Coney Island...Is freakin' ketchup too much to ask for?

Like most coney places, you just have to ask for ketchup. I've been eatting here since I was a kid & still love it. The spinach pie is awesome! The Senate has been around for 60 yrs, so they must be doing something right!

Well, yesterday we were feeling very lazy indeed. The weather was bad and so we decided to order our omlettes to go. I got to the resuruant around 10:30 AM, I've never had to call ahead at the Senate they are always quick and this way I can ensure that my food is really hot when I pick it up. On this particular Sunday they were very busy (usually a good sign that things will be fresh). I wish I could take away some stars here. The place is nearly filled to capacity with all types of people, lots of little kids too. I am standing at the carryout window when a man in his daughter come in and begin to talk to the woman in charge of carryouts. Within in minutes there is loud yelling and the kitchen manager goes over to join the show. Next thing I know they are flinging the F Bomb and calling each other bad names. I look around and little children are now sitting on the laps of thier parents and grandparents. The woman and the kitchen manager apparently do not know that they are making a spectacle of themselves, the man and his daughter are making a show of it. Apparently the girl was fired and had not been paid. Do I care? Not a bit. the manager called the police and they are still screaming at each other. Now when I look around people are leaving in droves but no one is at the cash register to check them out because she is in the middle of the arguement! Wow! I spent enough time waiting for my food then waiting to pay for it that we may well just have gotten up and dressed and went out. However that is not really the problem I have with the whole thing. It is Sunday morning for God's sake not Friday night at the bowling alley! So I get home to try my omlette, hoping that it will make all the nonsense disappear because of its deliciousness. No, it had a bad taste, it was cold and it was most likely from the events I had just witnessed. I will never go back, all of the redeeming qualities at Senate disappeared yesterday morning. Bye Bye Ham and Cheese.

My friend raves about Senate and especially their fries, but some of the worst hamburgers I've had came from here and I wasn't really impressed by anything else. It's really a mediocre hole in the wall that should be avoided. Maybe I had a chance bad first experience but I'm not tempted at all to give it a second go.

It's a greasy spoon with all the typical trimmings plus it's LOUD. Like noisy grade school cafeteria loud. Everything echos and conversations are turned up a notch so everyone can talk over the back ground noise which doesn't really work. Service was always consistant, slow and never with a smile. Plus they were always smoking over in the corner ~ yuck. The food is ok. It is what it is. It comes out hot, fast and is just what a diner serves. If it is in a bag, processed and frozen, it's on the menu. They finally take credit card. Now that theres a Tim Hortons across the street; there the location was the only reason I USED to go here.

A-OK in my book, I have been going to this location since around 5 years of age. Decent Dogs and Coney sauce, and excellent hand cut fresh fries. Friendly fast service too.

Just moved in the area, and drove to nearest place for breakfast. Portions are huge, food is good, fries and hash browns are made from scratch, and prices reasonable. However, very dirty and service is subpar. I'd like to rate it higher but I can't.

I don't know why this place has two stars. I came here while on an emergency trip to the area. My family has eaten here since it opened in 1937. My grandma and her parents came, my grandma took my mom and then my grandma and mom took me here often, too. There's a big booth in one corner where we used to sit, and I loved it! Visiting in 2015 is a little depressing. Almost no one was there, the building is so very very outdated, and it has this sticky feel on the tables, chairs and floor. I'm not really making this sound good, am I? Despite the poor servers struggling to handle our table of 9, they were so courteous. We got all of our food, nothing was incorrect and they brought enough refills to keep me happy. My boyfriend ordered French toast and I had a veggie omelet with hashbrowns. Whoa was that a lot of food! Everything was very tasty. It seemed like the kind of food you would get in grandma's kitchen. I think that's part of why it's so special. Plus, their fried pickles are unlike anything I've ever had. Delicious AND cheap. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but to a lot of people it's special. The food is so cheap and good, so that cant be beat.

At one time this place was one my family's favs for many years but the cleanliness, customer service, and quality of food have diminished greatly over the years. Sad to see actually. Hope to see them get back to their glory soon.

"Filthy floors, ran out of gyro meat, didn't get menus, coffee pretty good." That was my one-sentence mini-review that I typed up on my phone quickly after a visit, intending to return later to flesh out the review.... but you know what? I think it stands on its own perfectly well, because it pretty much sums up my experience here.

This is the worst Coney Island I have ever been to in my life. I ordered scrambled eggs hashbrowns bacon and toast. My eggs were the consistency of applesauce the hashbrowns were horrible and the toast was very thin and burnt. My friend ordered a Coney Island with fries and the bun was hard as a rock and the fries were not good with many dark and black spots on them. She was able to choke her meal down but I did end up sending mine back and not ordering anything else. I looked around at the other customers entrées and none of it looked very good. The hamburger patty looked like thin frozen bulk store meat. The Greek salads did not look appealing either and they used only cheap iceberg lettuce. Avoid this place at all costs! Like I said it is the absolute worst Coney Island I have ever been to in my life!

I am sadly going to have to agree with the others. This Coney Island used to be top dawg! I understand that with all the other coney restaurants competing with lower grade food and prices Senate was probably losing business. But when I wanted good quality for good price in the past this was the place to go. Now "The Place" has turned into your below average coney restaurant with a bigger venue then the others. Food is cheap grade(low quality), portions cut, prices jacked? Please, please someone step up and bring back ("The Place") the Quality, Quantity and the Service that the Senate we all know used to be! Bring back the church crowd, seniors, families!

The chili cheese fries are still the best in town, but you get nickleled and dimed for everything. A side of thousand island dressing with my guy's food was .75 cents. So, we're eating elsewhere these days.

This Senate location has really good food, but a below average waitstaff. I sat at the bar and a couple waitresses were arguing over working on the weekend and they weren't even trying to be quiet about it. This was all going on while my drink sat empty two feet away from them for like 10 minutes. So the bad service cost this place 5 stars.

Ordered the greek omlette with hashbrown and rye toast where should I start cannot see this location staying opened any longer first the the tomatoes where old and soggy the feta cheese was old and the has browns where soaked with oil and the rye toast was a piece of white toast sorry will never go back to this location cannot even come close to the old location on michigan ave and livernoise in detroit

Over priced. Terrible food quality. They charge for every thing. I asked for an extra straw and was told ten cents. Every sauce costed us a dollar. Seems like the skip spot for school kids. All that's there are highschool kids, very loud, very vulgar typically.

Some of the dishes are just as good as they were while I was growing up, but I have seen the quality slide over the years and the prices keep going up. It is sad to see a restaurant that used to be so lively and packed at dinner time barely be able to fill one section of tables. Bill was the former owner and put pride in his restaurant, I can't say the se for the current owner, his daughter.

Awesome coneys, chili and home cut french fries. This place is not known for decor. Its food is outstanding!

I grew up going to Senate's and honestly they had the best Coney in Metro-Detroit IMHO but now it's different. The service is still lightning fast and the breakfast is still quite good but the last four times i have been here they have burned my coney. Ok, not like the coney was charred on the outside, this is where it sat on the grill for an hour and one half of the hot dog is completely hard. That is ridiculous. I have been here over 100 times in my life but I don't plan on coming back anytime soon.
