Came here to stuff my face after a long weekend at Electric Forest Festival. Started off with the Poor Man's Fries (Waffle Fries w/ Bleu Cheese, Bacon & Hot sauce) which was very tasty. For my main I ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich - the meat was tender and tasty and paired with the au jus made for a deliciously filling meal.

Went to silver lake sand dunes and had to check out The Brown Bear. Was recommended by friends and couldn't have been happier to have their big burgers. Great atmosphere with great burgers, beer and great service.

Great food and even better/faster service. Had 7 kids and they recognized that and got the food out ASAP.

The service was great. The fried chicken was okay. The ladies bathroom was disgusting. My vantage point from our table was of the working kitchen...food all over the floor. When I mentioned it to our waitress she spoke to the cooks and then they closed the bottom of the Dutch door so you couldn't see the mess instead of cleaning it up. We will not be back.

Stopped in for the famous giant burger. Once I seen it I chickened out. Went with a baby bear burger. It was awesome. Greasy and tasty just like it's supposed to be.

Excellent food here! Service seems slow, but they are always pretty full when I go there, so that could have a bit to do with that. My granny, mom and I had a burger there, I can't remember the name but It was delicious! If you pass through Shelby, this is a must! :-)

Great burgers with lots of extras and variations, and sides made fresh and tasty. Friendly staff and a kitchen that never stops. I could see myself becoming a regular at the bar, if not for the fact that I live in California.

Was working in Rothbury and was looking for places to grab a bite to eat on the later side. We found this place on Yelp and figured the reviews were good enough to check it out. What a surprise - this place is always crowded and for good reason. The food was very good, but typical bar fare. Their famous bear burger was no joke. One pound of meat and all the fixings, I could only eat half of it at dinner. Try their home made curly fries for another treat. Accepts all major cc's which is nice also. We went back 2 - 3 times after our first visit within the 10 days we were there.

The Brown Bear sits in the middle of the very small town of Shelby. We went there because we were biking the Hart-Montauge bike trail and stopped in for a rest. Shelby is about 8 miles south of the north end of the trail that begins in Hart. The specialty here are the burgers. There is the Bear, Cub, Wimpy, Chili Cheese, Black & Bleu, Olive, Mushroom & Banana Pepper, and the featured Bear Burger Supreme. Luckily any of these are available in "wimpy" size, which is still quite large, at least a 1/4 pound after cooking I would say. But it's all very good!!! I tried the Chili Cheese burger which you need to eat with a fork & knife for most people (they bring the utensils out w/o asking). It was damn good! I threw a little Tabasco on it for fun at it was very tasty. The bar itself it quite nice. Many plasma TV's... a whole lot of sports stadium pics and old beer mirrors... and a variety of old and cool chandeliers. There's a lot of character here and I would love to see how it is on a Friday or Saturday night.

This is one of two downtown bars in sleepy little Shelby, Michigan. They do burgers very well, and have a full bar menu, including steaks, soup, other sandwiches and a full bar. Its really a small town bar, with several TV's on which Detroit sports are shown.

The Brown Bear teeters on the edge of being a dive bar, despite the eclectic collection of light fixture / chandeliers. Their draft beer selection was a little small. Despite this, I give it five stars because the burger I had was amazingly good. I went for the olive burger, and the burger was cooked perfectly, olive sauce was excellent, as the waffle fries were pretty good, too. My 6-year old was a little hesitant walking by the big bikers at the bar (they were nice, though), but she devoured the mini-corn dogs.

The Brown Bear has WAFFLE FRIES, people! That's reason enough to stop here. Their burgers are pretty great, too, though. If you're up for a challenge, order a Bear Burger. One whole pound of beef, with a specially made bun to fit the monstrous burger. I've ordered it once to share with the husband, just because I had to see this massive thing in person. Typically, I'm a wimpy burger kinda girl. Definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

Sorry to the very nice people that work there. Service was fine, place is nice. But the food was not that great. I got the nachos....probably should have tried the burger. I wouldn't go back.

I have heard the burgers are good but I have to be 100% honest and say I have never tried one! I grew up in Shelby and have eaten at the Bear so many times that I couldn't begin to estimate the actual number. I have to put a pitch in for the gourmet subs. This is my go-to, hasn't changed in the 20+ years that I have been eating them. All of the appetizers are good too, especially when paired with the ranch for dipping. Great place to watch a game or have a few drinks too.

Home of the famous 1 pound Papa Bear Burger. Good service and friendly people. Has another location in Pentwater. Small town bar! Worth the small detour off US 31 North.
