I really want to like this place, I do. There's something about a new, small restaurant- especially in a small town like saline- that deeply makes me want them to succeed. And perhaps they will- because their patrons are mostly suburban folks, who may have only had taco bell so far to compare this food to. However, in my book, the food is disappointing, not authentic, prepackaged, and I've been there 2x. I Don't consider myself a Mexican food expert by a long shot, but I know a decent mex place will serve shredded meats, not ground beef. There are no mex. Cokes available, even though they are available down the street at busch's by the case. The chilles rellenos were the saddest I've ever seen, and the fajitas dry. The tacos are no different from taco bell aside from the choice of cheese, and the chips and salsa aren't appitizing in the least. The guacamole is frozen sysco pouch variety, I know because I cook professionally and immediately recognized it. This is the kind of place that employs likely- real Mexican cooks, who serve below their own standards. Being in the business 11 years, I can place a bet that they cooks themselves won't eat the fare served on the menu, they know better. They likely make the "real" stuff for themselves. My suggestion? Get a few authentic options on the menu, pronto- and some real Mexican coke!

The rice was bland, the refried beans were ok, the chorizo tacos were just gross. The salsas were pretty good. The wife liked her huevos Mexicanos. If I had to choose between this place and Taco Bell, I'd choose Taco Bell.

Finding a good Mexican restaurant in or around Ann Arbor can be tough. I know people are going to tell me that there are plenty (Sabor Latino and Tio's to name a few), but I'm just not keen on either of those places. Mi Zarape is a very standard "American" Mexican restaurant, I almost feel like I'm eating back in Cincinnati because the menu is so similar to a few places down there. This type of restaurant is a step up from chain-Mexican food (Chipotle), but definitely not as authentic as somewhere like Tio's. The menu is full of your standard choices and combinations of dishes, there weren't many surprises here. There was a vegetarian section on the menu, but it was fairly small and everything else on the menu had meat. They were, however, very willing to make any dish without meat (enchilada platters, taco combos, etc.) Like most Mexican Restaurants, they serve chips and salsa before the meal and they were much better than most places. The chips were delicious and the salsa was homemade and full of flavor. The portions were large and most of the food was either good or very good, the only exception was the enchilada sauce. I know there are a lot of different styles of enchilada sauce and I absolutely have to rank this one as my least favorite. There was an overwhelming taste of cloves and this just about ruined my whole meal. I would have to recommend avoiding anything that includes an enchilada. Still, the rest of the food was good and there weren't any other big complaints from anyone I was with. I agree with Debra when she said the guacamole wasn't made fresh, but they must have changed the menu since she went because I looked high and low and saw no mention of ground beef. All meats were either shredded or chopped and I made sure to ask how they were and the general consensus was that they were fine. Given the limited Mexican selection around Ann Arbor, I would definitely go back to Mi Zarape if given a choice and I would recommend it, but don't expect to be amazed by the food there. Everything it fairly standard, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I had higher hopes.

A dream came true about a year and a half ago and a Mexican restaurant (Mi Zarape) opened near my home (okay, so it's a couple of miles away but for me, that's close!). Same kind of typical sauce covered 'traditional' Mexican food as anywhere else. You know, the food we're all getting bored with. Flat, soft, soggy, like old people food with a Mexican edge. The chips are okay and included but the salsa tastes like it's from Gordon Food Service. We've given it a shot twice now and it's really just worth the drive to Northville to go to On the Border, a southwest palate style place with color, crunch and energy (albeit chain- but a good one...and I do not easily give props to a chain). I really hate when a place that is supposed to be a restaurant has TVs on in every corner, like Mi Zarape does. Maybe they think that's what Americans want. Honestly, I think most of us miss Chi-Chi's like it was a deceased relative and are overjoyed to eat somewhere that really tries to provide a similar food experience (without the hepatitis!). So if you're looking for something that's not too extraordinary, this is a good place for you.

I thought the food was good and the service was great. The rice was a little bland but I will say it had quite a few different and interesting choices for a vegetarian. All in all it was a good exerience.

Good food, good service, and kid friendly. Chips and salsa are very good. The food comes very quick. Occasionally they have a mariachi band that the kids love. Food is priced very reasonably. Restaurant is clean and well kept.

Food quality & taste - 2.5 / 5 Staff service & friendliness - 1.5 / 5 Atmosphere - 2.5 / 5 Food price - 1.5 / 5 Ugh! I am not a huge fan of Mexican food but my mom is so I went with her for lunch one day and had a horrible experience. We got such a sketchy vibe from this place, we vowed to never go back. My mom got some sort of burrito and I asked the waiter if it would be okay if I could get the nuggets off the kids menu since I wasn't really hungry. He stared at us strangely and told me that it would be an extra charge. I had heard of that before for adults ordering kids meals so I was fine with it. I then asked if they had any mayonnaise and he said no. When we got our food, we were so disgusted. My mom said her burrito didn't have any flavor and the consistency was just runny and gross. Even though I got charged $7 and some cents for my meal, I only got FOUR nuggets and seriously about ten fries. I swear I'm not exaggerating. There was nothing special about them - they were just microwaved. We never saw our waiter again after he brought us our food until he came up to us about 20 minutes after he brought our food and set down a little cup of what looked like ranch dressing and left. We assumed it was the mayonnaise that I had asked for but it didn't look like it - the taste was even undistinguishable. When we went to pay, we realized that even though my meal was already $7, they had charged us another $2 for the little cup of "mayonnaise" that they brought. We were so shocked. The bill was $15 for four nuggets, some fries, and my mom's very normal-sized burrito. My kids meal was even more expensive than her meal after it was done.

Great, friendly staff with delicious and cheap Mexican food. They're enchiladas and frozen margaritas are amazing. Mi Zarape is very family friendly and will be the new family favorite.

I really love the food here. The Burrito California is delicious. Staff is exactly what I like in waiters/waitresses. Not overly hovering but still attentive. Great place, like the atmosphere, and definitely recommend.

The food always comes very hot! They also serve Jarritos - a Mexican soda, which I personally love with the tacos platter. They have a great spicy enchilada in addition to a great big burrito! The plates have enough to satisfy your taste buds, and they make really good tomato rice. One of my favorite Mexican places ever!

I'm really not sure how they stay open. This might be real Mexican to a Mexican, but other than the breakfast, it's pretty poor. They only offer breakfast on weekdays until 2 o'clock, and we would go in when they opened on Sunday mornings and the waiters had no problem serving it, but one Sunday they stopped, and wanted us to order full Taco/ burrito/enchilada dinners at 11:00 a.m. and since we don't think much of their recipes for those things we've moved on.

Ick. The restaurant itself seemed clean. That's the only good thing I have to say. Waitstaff did the bare minimum for their jobs, and nothing more. They were not friendly and it made us a little uncomfortable. The food was not good. The cheese was liquid... and not the good kind. My meal came to the table looking like a sticky mess on a bare plate. There was clearly no attempt to make it look interesting or appetizing. Other members of our table said their food was "OK"- but certainly not worth what they charge for it. Margaritas were like syrup. We will not be going back.

Love this place. Fajitas for two can feed a family of 4. Very tasty. Service is good. Love their salsa and chips. Not sure what authentic Mexican is, but this compares with most places I have eaten in Michigan. Prices very reasonable. Continue to visit frequently.

Delicious, good prices, serves beer/ liquor, and best part yet... they recently added breakfast to the menu and its surprisingly awesome! Gotta try the zarape hash. Kids also love this place :)

Had a pleasant time here meeting friends for lunch. The chips and salsa were stale and tasteless, but the shrimp quesadilla was good and not over-cheesed. Staff was quick and attentive. The place is very kid-friendly. Families were stopping by and ordering corn dogs for the kids and they seemed happy digging into the food.

Poor customer service - the waiter barely said more than he had to, tossed our plates on the table, and didn't come back to see if the food was ok or if we needed anything. He didn't even comeback to give us the bill. We had chicken fajitas, which were pretty good. Although the chips were stale and the salsa was nothing to remember. So I would've rated this place one star for poor customer service and a pricey menu. But gave it one more star for at least having tasteful fajitas. I wouldn't go back and I would't recommend.

Unauthentic, mediocre, expensive and a great disappointment. Shrimp too salty, burritos dry, kids corn dog meal unpleasant, margaritas syrupy and lack kick. What a waste, especially since their Auburn Hills location is not at all bad. One trip to the Saline location was too many.

The salsa was delicious! That's about the only good thing I can say. The chorizo in the quesadilla was burnt, the rice was bland, the tacos were "Taco Bell"-like, and the enchiladas were just okay. The service was not very good. We had to corral the waitress to bring more salsa. She never stopped by to ask how things were, just kept passing us by. Sorry, we wanted to like it, but we won't be back.

I lived in El Paso for 7 years. El Paso food is more northern Mexico than Tex-Mex since it is right on the border of the city of Juarez in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The food here is exactly like the food there. It makes me miss El Paso and the food here is very close to what I would get there. I love the salsa here, especially since they use fresh cilantro in it. I really enjoy their chile rellenos. Overall, it's my favorite Mexican place in the area (a lot probably has to do with how close it is to the Mexican food I am used to).

While I love eating here, I was shocked tonight to discover that when I paid for my meal, there was an "admin fee" tacked on at the register. I guess now if you pay with a debit or credit card, there is an extra charge for that. I wish I had known BEFORE deciding to go there. I have been there many times before and paid with my debit card. It was explained to me that they just got a new system. PLEASE PUT UP SIGNS to let your customers know. At least the gas stations post the difference between cash and cards - so you know before you start filling up.

My wife and I loved this place. Was one of our favorite Mexican places to go to. However, the last couple of times we have been here, we noticed something was not the same. The food tasted different. My usual Carne Asada was over cooked and no seasoning. My wife's taco salad was soupy and no taste. The chips are different. I hope the new cook catches up soon cause I think we might have to find a new Mexican place.

I agree that this is not authentic mexican food. I also agree that it is most probably prepackaged. Having said that I will also say that, it was both tasty and flavorful. I certainly wouldn't make a special trip to eat here. But, if in the area I would most likely stop back. I do recommend giving the Texas Margarita a try. They are made with a hit of Grand Marnier and pack a punch that sneaks up. This is a third location that has opened, with the original being in Pontiac and another located in Southfield. I must say that management is clearly lacking. The waitstaff is mildy attentive, not friendly and is actually somewhat distant.

Fast service and perfectly good Mexican. Yeah, I've had better, but I think this is a great place to stop in for lunch. No complaints.

Have always had a great experience with Mi Zarape either dine-in or take-out. I just wish they would cook more with red peppers in addition to green peppers :) My wife and I usually dine here at least once every other week. Make sure they include your tortillas if you get take-out :)

Excellent customer service! Someone was always swinging by to see if we needed anything. The food was pretty good, but the salsa and queso stood out most!

I ate here for lunch with a group of family members once. It is a nice atmosphere BUT there was a soccer game on and the entire staff had a hard time keeping their eyes off of the TV. I felt like I was imposing on them. The food was HORRIBLE. It looked and tasted like a microwavable meal from the frozen section at your local supermarket. Not to mention It came out faster then I could blink, which makes me think it really was a frozen meal. Not recommended AT ALL. Unless your wanting a in and out meal that you could have heated up at home but didn'nt feel like doing it yourself.

First and last time there. The vegetarian combo SOUNDED good. Spinach burrito, potato enchilada and mushroom quesadilla but...no. The mushroom quesadilla was canned mushrooms coated in a thick application of salty steak seasoning. The spinach burrito was filled with canned spinach, that hadn't been drained properly, making the whole thing a soggy mess with a few diced onions thrown in. The weirdest was the potato enchilada; clearly reused french fries with a spicy ketchup and mushy to the point of paste. The waiter only appeared to give us our check so when we were asked at the register how we liked our meal, and said we didn't, we got a tepid response of "oh no one's ever complained before." Reading the reviews of others, I kinda doubt that. Very disappointing.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
