Healthy Meal suggestions for Guelaguetza Mexican Restaurant

I found my spirit animal and it's the 12" chicken burrito with green sauce from Guelaguetza. Take a journey through a mystic explosion of flavor and habit forming intoxication. An Americanized monster of a burrito, you'll find delicate chicken marinating in a bath of slightly spicy God juice along side such staples as rice and veggies and whatever else they can fit inside (quite frankly I've never been able to stop eating long enough to tell what's all inside). The burrito is served in a bath of green sauce that is rumored to have been sourced directly from the natural salsa springs of the central valley region of Mexico. Finally, this infant sized package is draped in a mysterious blend of melted cheese that, upon contact with your mouth, will bring tears to your eyes. I've had burritos in Texas, San Francisco, Arizona, Mexico, and other far flung, so called "burrito capitals" of the world, none compare. Buy your plane ticket now to come visit this gem in the middle of the least likely place you'd think to find such a burrito. (This review is only for the burrito. Good luck, and come hungry!)

The salsa they serve free is indeed from a big costco jar. That has thrown us off at first..but once food came in, we were delighted. Delectable refried beans, excellent rice, everything else we got was also pretty good. Meat portions are good, they serve imported cola and native non-alcoholic drinks. Their prices range from $6-18, and meal combos are the best deals. I'd describe the general flavor as home-made mexican food. I'd definitely come again

This small Mexican restaurant was recommended to me by a friend. When I approached the storefront, well, let's just say it isn't getting 5 stars for curb appeal any time soon. I don't like to judge a book by its cover, though. I was told that the food is amazing. The inside of this place was much cleaner and larger than I thought it would be. I was relieved. I was also really excited for an amazing Mexican food experience. Unfortunately, right off the bat, I spotted the 2 microwaves behind the counter. There was a woman frantically warming food for take-out orders. There was also a line of people waiting for their food. It reminded me a lot of the common area at work around lunch time when Frank heats up his Hungry Man meal...while Sue and Jim wait patiently behind him with their Lean Cuisines in tow. Ok. So the food is heated in the microwave before it's served. So what? Then woman then brought us our chips and salsa. Oh boy. I've never had chips as bad as the ones that were served at this Mexican restaurante. The chips were incredibly thick and tough. The salsa also reminded me of the Chi-Chi's salsa from the jar. Not impressed. I'm pretty sure my co-worker needed extensive dental work after digging into the chips. I ordered the taco lunch meal. It came with 2 tacos, beans and rice. I had the ground beef tacos. The beef had a weird bitter taste to it. I'm not sure if it was a combo of the seasoning packet and the microwave or what. It wasn't the best. The beans and rice were...beans and rice. Nothing that special here. All in all, I wasn't so impressed with my experience. The atmosphere was clean and friendly. The prices were really good. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, don't go here. Go over to Las Tortugas in Utica. That stuff is amazing. - strik9

Pretty good Mexican food. We got the super wet burrito and chicken fajitas. Full of flavor and delicious. We will return. Walking in, the restaurant wasn't much to look at, but it smelled so good. The food was good. The parking lot is a bit crazy as it's located in the middle of a small series of shops and cars can go in both directions down the one row of parking. The restaurant is located next to the Baskin Robbins.

Quiet, unpretentious and unassuming ... where I go when I want to get away from the cookie-cutter, corporate-type Mexican eateries. Reminds me somewhat of the cantinas you find in Latin America & the Philippines ... nothing fancy, but clean with good food/service, :). They also serve Jarritos (Mexican fruit flavored soda) and Mexican Coke (made with real sugar, NOT high fructose corn syrup), either of which goes well with a plate (or two) of the hard tacos. The staff, I thought, was very congenial and it's an overall pleasant place to take a break from a busy day and grab a bite to eat, :).

This place has very good food at a decent price. They take credit cards and the food is home cooked. Would recommend to anyone. Been there over 20 times and nothing was ever bad. But if your I n a hurry i would not go as service may be slightly slower than you expect.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Great food, friendly service, only problem is they don't accept credit cards/debit cards. It can be inconvenient at times.

  • Janae W.

Well despite the microwaved food and nasty chips. They are pretty amazing, not so fast service but it is friendly. No credit card machine as said before. I always get the enchiladas and tostadas that's all I've ever got. It's pretty good food and service pretty local.

the place is pretty rundown with paint peeling, broken dishes, and cheesy decorations. the food wasn't great. the chips tasted stale. I ordered the #3 combo and hated my beef enchilada. it didn't taste fresh, and I think there was something in my rice that wasn't supposed to be there. on top of that, they charged me extra for guac on the side that I never received. they were nice but I'm never ever going back there.

Can't help myself to fix my craving with this locations food. I cannot speak on the regional nature of the offerings, but they do make a mean Taquito, and their burrito is the better of what's around -- talking to you El Charro's. The only issues I have is CASH ONLY, and NO SUNDAY HOURS. Whenever I run in the shop, it's for the family, and I usually end up spending $40 or more to fill the family. Then there is the Sunday morning cravings after a Saturday night fest, and it leaves us with finding the next best Mex in town. If they focused their CASH money on anything besides product and service, then they should spend $5k on improving the interior... especially the color pallette. This might make people sit and stay versus carry out only.

Frist off let me say this no restaurant should use a micowave. I ordered the soft shell deep fryed tacos they were good and the salsa was good also. The waiter did a good job also. But other then that i was not excited with this place the chips were hard and i was not a fan of the rice

Went back for fajitas and apparently ownership changed, my fajitas were mainly onions and peppers. They skimp on meat, a rip off at 13.00 Would not recommend this place

Loved it great menu, and the Saffron rice is the best I've ever had. More flavor than most.

First we walked in and there was food (but no people) at 2 of the tenish tables in there. The food stayed there for about ten min while all the workers were relaxing and talking. Then we got the chip basket. The chips were obviously not home made. We ordered expecting the best. By the way we were the only ones in the place. My wife was facing the kitchen and giving me the play by play. However i really did not need it because i could hear the constant beeping of the ever loving microwaves. Plural, yes they had a bank of 3 microwaves that they put every last plate in. And you could taste it in the food. Everything was almost too hot to eat because of the microwaves and the food was dried out. I did not understand why people were coming in as were eating. I just wanted to tell them to run! They had a good flow of caryouts, and even the styrofoam caryout containers were put into the microwaves. One thing i need to add is that the decor of the restaurant is that of a bright orange storage closet with tables and plastic parrots on the wall. I would avoid this place out of safety and concern for your body!

Is there a lower rating than 1 star? This is a revisit from my previous review. Nothing has changed. Had a horrible meal. The Pastor meat tasted strongly of vinegar. My wife's Quesadilla had the texture of gummy bear. The salsa was bland and the chips were made from some kind of concrete mixture. I did not eat my meal, complained of the quality and the bill was presented to me with no modifications. There's nothing I hate worse than having to pay for a bad meal. Incidentally, the never ending beeps of microwave timers still resonate through the air of this truly unpleasant establishment.

Changes....one, no more credit cards are accepted only cash. Two, no more tamales...I asked why... no answer really, just..no tamales! I mean that's the main Mexican dish folks want....I thought. Three, the menu is smaller. Four, their prices went slightly up. Five, they use a microwave to warm up food. Lol.... I still order botanas. (small) with chicken. Its under $10 and you get a bag of chips, with still not enough salsa. I don't order anything else and I'm starting to think Mexican food somewhere else. Oh and by the way their never open on Sunday.

Some of the better Mexican in the area. Chips are nasty, but their burritos and salsa were legit.

  • Jessica S.

I don't know what kind of cheese they use but it's awesome.

  • Janine B.

Just went there the other day on the recommendation of fellow Yelpers. Best chicken tacos ever. The tamale was loaded with spicy pork and I loved my beef tacos too. Excellent salsa that was mild with smaller chunks of tomatoes and onions, another plus. The tortilla chips were freshly made and on the thick side, but tasted good. They serve Pepsi products, which I prefer. I liked the Mexican music playing on the stereo, but it was a little too loud. I went back there today (Saturday) at about 1:30 and they were closed, even though the carry out menu I got a couple days ago said they are open 12-10pm on Saturday.

  • Ryan D.

I lived in this area for 3 years now and this was my first experience here. order the chicken quesadilla and it was the best I ever had. it was fairly priced. But what I don't understand why they didn't have a credit card machine, anyone nowadays can even accept credit cards long as you have a bank account(Square)

This is my favorite mexican restaurant ever! If only the company that I go with would be just as good.

Went here last night. Very boring burrito covered in enchilada sauce. Who sauces up a burrito? Also no beer.. I love a good cold beer with my supper. And if course no plastic payment allowed. The burrito was really big but no guacamole or sour cream on it. Not very happy with Mexican food in Michigan so far.

This restaurant has the best Mexican food I have ever had. I have been getting carry outs here for about 10 years and have never had a bad meal. I always get filled up after eating one of their 3 beef enchilada dinners. If you get one of their meals you will definitely not be hungry after eating one. Also, you will know you have eaten great tasting food.

I have been actively looking for a good Mexican restaurant. I want one that makes fresh food. I was hoping this would be the one. I have no problem with the restaurant itself. The people were nice and attentive. But - I got the empanadas and they were okay, kind of dry for my taste and then a plop of rice and beans. We also got the carnitas. It was a huge portion but unfortunately very salty. I hate to be too hard on this restaurant because it's a nice family place. I might try it again and see if I just picked the wrong items.

Hands down one of the best authentic Mexican places in the city. From 12 inch burritos to 2 dollar taquitos you cant go wrong with anything on the menu. Its just a small, hole in the wall place next to a hair salon but it definitely delivers the flavor. My usual order is 2 steak taquitos and 2 al pastor(marinated pork) taquitos. Every meal comes with chips and salsa. And if you are feeling up to it, try the lengua (tongue), it will surprise your taste buds!

Best Mexican on the east side! love this place. Gonna hear a microwave, but if you want your food fast its cool with me. I have tried the entire menu everything is great. I tell everyone about this place.

  • Kate C.

The burritos were fairly decent for a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. The chicken and pork were the best, the beef was a little soggy for my tastes. The refried beans were DISGUSTING. They smelled as though someone had dumped an ash tray of cigarette ashes into them; the after taste was the same. The rice was overcooked and soggy. The salsa they give you taste like ChiChi's from a can, and the tortilla chips they give you were stale. The only thing my boyfriend and I enjoyed were the homemade deep fried chips they had. At least they got something right.

"Carne Asada?" As the owner lady/server at Guelaguetza lowered down huge plates of delicious-looking Mexican fare before my man and I, whatever we were yapping about faded in the air as we gasped out loud. You should have seen the look of manic joy plastered on my sweet beau's face as he took in the Matterhorn o' meat laid before him. I too was thrilled at the chickeny tableau of goodness that awaited me. Everything I've had here has been authentic, flavorful, and plentiful. Portion sizes are HUGE, the quality of meats excellent. I'm damn picky about shrimp but theirs are clean, large, and bathed in delicious sauces. Order a Mexican hot chocolate and you'll be given a tiny cup (it's all you need!) of warm, sweet comfort soaking up flavor from actual chunks of cinnamon. The interior is colorful with metal chairs and interesting doodads, the service prompt. Guelaguetza (pronounced "Gay-la-gate-sa") is the name of a Mexican festival that takes place in Oaxaca. Like those revelers, the residents of Tastebudsaca will celebrate too.

  • Lauren C.

If you don't feel like dragging yourself out to Mexican Town, Guelaguetza is a great stand-in for solid, quality Mexican food. I was really pleased when I went. Good salsa, good amount of food, decent prices.

We have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant in and around Detroit for quite some time. We went as a family one day in the afternoon and had lunch. One of us had the spinach quesadilla and loved it. Another had a chicken taco and thought it was ok. I had a chicken burrito and I thought it was ok. I was watching the kitchen and there was a lot microwave heating going on which I dont like. If someone asked me to recommend a Mexican restaurant this one would not be it.

  • Bernard H.

    I would go again..

    (3)
  • Natalie F.

I don't know what Tom V. and Anj F. are talking about, I've never had a less than superbly satisfied feeling after eating food from Guelaguetza. I would have given them 5 stars had they not forgotten my glass bottle of Coke the last time I had my boyfriend pick me up lunch. (I partially blame him though, because he should have double-checked.) I just finished my taco lunch and they were delicious, as usual. AND I watched the cook prepare them, so microwaved food? I think not. Besides, HELLO! You can't microwave Mexican anyway, it would become a pile of mush. Did it ever occur to you that maybe that's how they warm up the flour tortillas because there isn't room on the cook top when the place is busy? As far as the ambiance, if that's your main concern and not the delicious food then head over to Rojo for overpriced, sub-par Mexican. I've always found that the dingier and more hole-in-the-wall-esque a place, especially Mexican, the better the food. As far as the parking lot, yes-- it sucks. A lot. It's the most awkward parking lot I've ever parked on and I used to live in Brooklyn. But, that's not the business owner's fault. That's on whomever owns the building. As far as price, you can't really beat it. A couple tacos ala cart, ample side of pico de gallo, small order of hot salsa and a glass bottle of Coke for under $10 bucks every time.

I visited on May 4 and although I'd had great experiences before, they were completely out of their league this evening. After sitting in the restaurant about 30 minutes, I noticed that 4 tables that sat down after me were either eating or wrapping up their meals. Concerned, I asked the owner what was going on, and she just chuckled as if it was funny. Not only that, I heard others complaining that this was the worst service they had ever received. Customers were walking up to the front to request water, bills, etc. This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant, but now I'm on a search for a new one.

  • Miss E.

It's a couple of steps up from Taco Bell. Never dined in. If you don't mind microwave reheated food then this is your place. The chicken reminds me of the chunk chicken from the can, no flavor. Because they microwave the food in styrofoam containers it is often dried out and has that microwaved taste. The styrofoam is often warped and bubbled because they have to heat it so long to get the food hot. Don't know how safe that is. Thought I'd found a new go to Mexican place without the drive to Mexican Village...but I'm still taking the ride. Two stars for the chips and salsa that are kinda okay.

    (2)
  • Joe B.

If it could worse than one it would be. I had a taco meat disgusting I couldn't believe it the person at the counter wanted nothing to do with my order I will NEVER BE BACK HERE

Super casual, simple place, but their dishes are phenominal. Large portions with fresh ingredients.

Got a chance to stop by here again. I had been craving the crunchy corn beef tacos. It was a busy lunch at 1:30. Service was slow, but there are only 3 people working here, and the food they turn out is worth the wait. I will come here for a full dinner and try something other than tacos and write another review.

3.75 Stars For years Eastpointe did not have any good mexican food options except El Charro's or Chi' Chi's (which is kaput) I rejoiced when Plaza Mexico opened on 9 mile. I didn't even know this place was here for a long time, I think it opened after Plaza. This place is a hole in the wall. I was wary for the 1st couple of years this place was open but no more. The tacos are delicious. I need to try more things there though, I saw someone eating a huge burrito. Pro's: Tacos, Mexican music pumped outside building. Cons: Inside smells like cleaning solution. I think it's great it smells clean, just not like Mr. Clean. If this place was not here Plaza Mexico would get the 4 star rating, dining in Plaza is a little better.

I've been to so many places in metro detroit that cant hold a candle to this place. yes it's tiny. No they don't serve booze. Yes they have microwaves and aren't afraid to use them. But we're not looking for french haute cuisine here, and the flavors speak for themselves. You may not know how to say it, but you owe it to yourself to find it...

  • Randi B.

The food is great. I forget about this place a lot, just because the corner of ten and kelly isn't my first thought for Mexican, but as soon as it came up as near me I thought," I need to go there soon." They have some interesting region specific dishes, you can also get breakfast here. I don't think they were as good this time as the last time I went, but still a pretty decent choice for the area.

Great authentic Mexican! No beer (which is always nice with Mexican) and kinda crummy ambiance, but probably the best Mexican that I've had in the area (including Mexican Village). Not your fanciest date night, but darn good food. Try the flaming cheese!!

  • Debbie H.

This little place surprised us ... well, more me than Deb. I guess being from California qualifies her as an authority on authentic Mexican food. She has been very critical of Michigan's choices and is always telling me that the best places in Orange County were little "hole-in-the-wall" types of restaurants that you didn't expect much from just looking at. So we happened upon this place and ... *hole in the wall status? Check *lowered expectations based on aesthetics? Check All that was left was the fare ... so in we went and after looking over the extensive menu choices, went with soft shell chicken tacos, a chicken burrito, and the chips and salsa. Everything was very, very good. Fresh-tasting and flavorful ... not like most Mexican places surrounding us which have cornered the market on indistinguishable slop. I did notice a microwave (yikes!) but our food did not enter it so I can't dock them points for that. So, about to consult my little ginger version of Simon Cowell, I wasn't sure what to expect. WWDT ... what would Deb think? Thumbs up ... and while it wasn't heralded as the south-of-the-border cure for all that ails metro-Detroit's south-of-the-border shortcomings, ... it was definitely a step (or two) in the right direction. Between Zumba in Royal Oak and Guelaguetza, we may not ever again enter a Mexican restaurant that's larger than a small bedroom.

After living near this restaurant and loving Mexican food, I had to try it. At first glance this restaurant is very very plain. White walls, boring plain tables, plain chair, not much Mexican going on here except the smell of the food. Still, knowing that looks doesn't equal taste I was still going to try it I ordered a carry out. The prices here are very reasonable and the portions are good. I got home, ate and was very surprised how good it was. It's one of my new favorite Mexican places. If you haven't tried their food yet, make sure you do soon. Update 3/13/11 I still frequent this restaurant and I have no complaints, just praise for the great, cost efficient food. I love it.

Favorite authentic Mexican food on the Eastside! Family run and they are always very friendly and super fast with your order. Nice vegetarian dishes and all the food is excellent so far. Have been there about 20 times.

The food is good. and pretty much authentic. It is a small place and yes the microwave does go off but that is not because they are heating processed food. It's a small place with a menu with variety. I have no problem with them reheating. I do it at home all the time. Really the food is good and if you are thinking of going. Go!

I'm not an expert on Mexican food, but I've never had a bad experience here. Being a hole in the wall type restaurant, I'm not expecting white linen tablecloths, etc... I do enjoy their mole oaxaqueno. I don't know whether that is how mole should taste, but I found it quite tasty. My other friends also found the food to be quite good for a good price as well.

This place is a small restaurant in the strip mall across from Value World just east of Kelly road in 10 mile. That doesn't make it sound too appetizing, but it really is. They have amazing food at great prices (check out their website for a 10% off coupon!). I've ate extremely well here for under $7, which makes it the absolute cheapest Mexican on the East side. The Given the price, the quality is all the more amazing. I've had some pretty crappy Mexican that's been cheap (cheap and crappy seem to go hand-in-hand) but Guelaguetza isn't this way. I have only a few critiques: Guelaguetza... how the hell do you pronounce that? The only other place that's worse is Xochimilco! Couldn't they just call it the Mexican Garden and be done with it? It's tough to say "Hey, let's go to... that.... Mexican place" over and over without having to explain where and what it is. The place is small, so seating is at a premium, though they're usually not busy (i.e. wait time). However, their menu is fairly small as well. They only offer three or four dessert dishes (and no Flan! which gets a star off) which I thought strange. You'd think they'd be big sellers! However, they have the essentials: tamales, all the typical beef and chicken dishes, the beans and the rice. Yum. In all, I'd recommend stopping in, though if you're looking for something extremely exotic Mexican cuisine, you may want to try Mexicantown before this place, because they may not have it on their limited menu.

There is much better options out there. After reading the positive reviews decided to give the place a try. Walking in so far all the reviews were correct: parking lot was a mess, and restaurant was small, out dated and poorly decorated. We ordered carryout dinner for two (we thought, it was a little difficult understanding each other). The meal took about 25 minutes instead of the original estimate of 10-15 minutes. Granted they were extremely busy and understaffed. It appeared there was one person to work the front of house and one cook who was also answering the phone. I also noticed the three microwaves which made me nervous. While waiting there was never any communication as to how much longer it was going to take, we were pretty much ignored and just left to wonder if we had been forgotten. After paying for our food, which seemed to just be an estimate (for everyone we heard paying the total per person was approximately $10, no matter what was ordered) maybe it was the extra charge of $0.50 for NO tomatoes on tacos, but we felt this was off. Then we finally got home with our food. I was still hopeful after what we had experienced, again based on the previous reviews, but it turned out to be for not. First off the chips and salsa: the salsa was alright, seemed to actually be homemade, but the chips were extremely stale, like sitting out in the open for a week stale. The carnitas burritos were a huge disappointment and tough to eat. There was very little flavor to the pork and it was extremely dry with hard chunks here and there. The rice and beans were pretty basic. As for the chicken flauta the crisp deep fried shell was tasty (of course, who doesn't like fried stuff?) but the chicken was flavorless and needed to be drenched in salsa. The only item that seemed alright were the deep fried beef tacos, but there are definitely better available close by. All in all after finishing my meal I felt like when I pulled into the restaurant parking lot, disappointed and kinda queasy.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
