Bilbo's Pizza in a Pan is famous among Michiganders. The pizza is good, but it's not outstanding. I'm not sure why it's quite as popular as it is, but my guess is that it was one of the first pan pizzerias around. When I was a child, pan pizza was introduced, and my family loved it when we first tried it. No wonder my mother thought it was a good idea to try a recipe for pan pizza that she found in the newspaper. Well, that was...A BAD IDEA! My brother and I still call that recipe "pizza soup." (You may think it's funny that I remember my first pan pizza, but my grandmother remembered the first time she had pizza at all! Imagine that!) Bilbo's opened around that same time. I'm sure that, for people who lived and went to school around one of the Bilbo's locations, that it is a place of history and meaning. For me, Bilbo's is good pizza with a name I recognize. The crust is thick and chewy, and the toppings are solid. However, the sauce isn't as flavorful as I like. As I said, it's good but not outstanding. Bilbo's also makes its own beer, and beer is cool. Beer and pizza is even better. We tried two during our most recent visit. I can't remember the names (maybe because I was drinking beer), but both were good. I know my food review isn't quite, "Go to Bilbo's now!" However if you haven't read the 'About Bilbo's' section of the company's website, you just have to do so. It's a really fun company story. It will make you want to visit Bilbo's for good pizza and beer but also to support a cool local business that's part of the fabric of Michigan history. P.S. Saturday afternoon did not offer table service at this location! Boo!

After Reading several reviews, I cannot understand how some people say the crust at Bilbo's is not good and has no taste. I find it to have the best taste of any pizza I have had anywhere. I have been going to Bilbo's since the 1970s and find it to be the best pizza around. It is true that the service is not quite up to par, but the pizza more than makes up for that. The interior also needs an update, if they were to take cues from the movie or the books and update the interior, it could be quite an experience. Bilbo's, Train your staff and redo your interior and you will again be my favorite pizza place.

I have eaten Bilbo's pizza twice. The first time I had a stuffed pepperoni pizza. It was amazing! The crust was flaky and had a garlicky butter taste to it. It was even better when I heated it back up the second time. I was thinking about so we decided to order again. This time it was blah. Seemed totally different than before. No flaky crust. No buttery garlicky taste. Wasn't what I was expecting. I called to let them know that it was a complete turnaround from the first time. The manager apologized and said they had a new cook and thanked me for calling. I thought he should have went out of his way to offer a discount on my next order or try to win us back. No effort whatsoever. 2 stars for poor customer service.

This pizza is amazing!! Whole wheat pan crust with pepperoni and a family salad with the house dressing is my family's favorite! Every time I come home to visit my parents in Portage this is #1 on my list of restaurants to eat at. I highly recommend it!

This place is old and feels really dirty. You will probably never get worse service in your life. The pizza is only ok. The breadsticks are good. The personal pan pizza might fill up a small child. It's pricey for what it is - substandard.

This is one of the best pizza places in town. The whole wheat crust is great, and don't forget the dill sauce! I like the atmosphere of the Stadium drive location better, and the fact that it has Bilbo's own micro-brewed beers, but the pizza is excellent at both locations. A great stop if I'm down in Portage.

Bilbo's Pizza In A Pan has a revolutionary pan-style pizza. I went in looking for a semi-deep dish pizza from the name and was initially disappointed when I saw my pizza have more wheat in it than I expected. However, my first bite told me different. The pizza was made extremely well from the crust to the freshness of toppings. The crust had the best balance of crispyness versus taste and the pizza was also firm when holding it just by the crust. Something that I have never seen before was the fact that the pan had almost NO GREASE. This truly amazed me and I think it only applies to their pan-style pizza. Service was also good. The only downside is that their pan-style pizza is a bit pricey going at $18-$19 for a large.

Besides being the WORST pizza I've ever had in my life, this place has two speeds; slow and stop. The pizza is not only the worst, but so is the service. They shouldnt call it service. Maybe non-service? Or get it yourself? We had four people at our table and only three sets of silverware. Asked the waitress for one more set. That's the last we saw of her. My husband got tied of waiting, got up and got the silverware himself from the waitress station. Then one of the waitresses suddenly shows up and says "sir, you can't be back here". And he says "well, someone needs to be because obviously you all arent"! Before we even sat at the table, we had to clean it ourselves. There were pieces of dried pizza on the tabletop along with greasy smudges. I used my pocket hand santizer to clean up. I was lucky to find napkins to clean it with. If the place had been busy that night, I could understand the poor service. But it was not, place was only 1/3 filled. I cannot believe Bilbo's get's a high rating. Must be a lot of people in this world with dead taste buds. Because this pizza was the worst I've ever had. It had no flavor. All of us hated it. When we wanted refills on our drinks, the waitress was no where to be found. She did show up to give us our check. She wanted to know if we wanted to take home the left over pizza. Heck no! Even poor people in some third world country wouldnt eat this stuff. Paid for our pizza, did not tip the waitress and vowed never to go back!!!

Bilbo's is, and has always been, the best pizza in town. They are also the only ones to offer whole wheat crust. The house salad dressing is so awesome they sell it separately. The breadsticks with dill dip are a real treat!!

We've made it a Hobbit & always order from here. One pizza to rule them all! I love their pizza. The Westnedge location seems to do a bit better job with the food (even though it's a bit farther away). Like their stuffed and specialty pizzas. A bit pricey, but worth saving up for a treat!

The pizza was pretty good but not worth $20 for a large pepperoni. Didn't dine in, picked up. First time at this location. Second time having Bilbos. The personalities at the front were very stale. A waitress looked like she couldn't be bothered to smile let alone look at me. The girl at checkout was nice... In the manner of, had a noncrappy tone like the other one. No thank you, or have good day. Bad move, as I'm a first time customer. Also ... While I'm all about expressing creativity (I love it honestly), facial piercings and crazy hair doesn't belong in food service... Specially joined with slightly poor people skills. It makes the place look and feel trashy. Bummmmmmer. Won't be back. Maybe I'll try the stadium location again... But this one just got the last $20 from us. 2 stars for the homemade style pan pizza being good.

The Stadium Drive location is better overall, so if you have the option, go there! This one is slower, the staff isn't as knowledgable, and it's smaller. For what it is (a pizza and sandwich joint), it's definitely overpriced! This place is really dirty- filmy windows and tables, gross carpet. It's also just plain ugly inside, but maybe we can chalk that up to the hobbit theme?

Bilbo's has long been a favorite of my family, and I'm disappointed to say that the quality of the food and the service is steadily declining. The pizza and stix remain good, but the pasta is either overdone and dry, or very obviously frozen and then thawed, leaving it a soupy mess. The staff is friendly, but they are slow, and they rarely check on things after the food is delivered. The building itself has been outdated for a long time, but decor aside, it gets dirtier and dirtier.

My husband and I love Bilbo's! Their food is good, and it's a reasonable price. We are both big LOTR fans so the theme is also right up our alley. We usually don't get pizza, but we love their sandwiches, the Faramir's Favorite is delicious (especially with bacon added to it) and their cheesy stix with the dill dipping sauce is also super good. We love this place!

See my review of the Stadium Drive location, with two changes. Plus: the staff at this Bilbo's is better trained, though very laid back (some people dislike this - I think it is fine). The only problem is they tend not to come back to the table often enough. This location is also more consistent on the quality of the product it delivers. Minus: this is perhaps one of the dirtiest restaurants in all of Portage, especially since A Pizza Yen closed. You can see the film on the windows, and the carpet has to be storing 40 years of dust.

Sauce tasted bad. Thin crust was not thin. Don't think I will be back.

The food has always been pretty good but I also make really good food at home! These days a big problem with going out to eat is bad service. I called to price and plan a menu for a baby shower and was given bad information for its about everything from pricing to their ability to deliver. The delivery option on Sunday early afternoon was my main reason for ordering from there. Day of party I call to place order and am told "Sorry we don't deliver that early". Unfortunately for me I live in California so getting someone to pick the food up last minute was difficult! Thanks for not offering any discount too Amy!!! Don't worry I'll save money NOT suggesting or ever ordering here again!!!

Love Bilbo's. We come here for the salad and the stuffed pizza, both of which are awesome . We usually get decent service on Friday nights, which is saying something. Two complaints: 1. The entire staff is comprised of hipsters who aren't really interested in being there, though they still give okay service. Not stellar, but our food is always right and our drinks are never empty. There are a couple of servers who are friendlier. 2. This place is in serious need of a makeover. The wallpaper is peeling, the plaster is flaking, there's water damage on the ceiling, things are broken, the decor sucks, the patio is in need of some TLC, and the windows have never been cleaned. I'd be sad if the place closed for renovations, but they're sorely in need of them. I will say that the tables are always clean, dishes get cleared quickly. We get two or three stops by our table to make sure things are good and to see if we need anything (other than refills), which is perfect in my opinion. Nothing worse than a hovering server while you're trying to eat, or one you never see. Despite my complaints, we'll continue to come back here frequently, because the pizza is just that good.

Bilbo's food is great if you are looking for cheesy and greasy. Service was horrible, and the atmosphere was very outdated.

Fabulous pizzas and great family deals. We love their pizza with wheat crust and family size salads and their house dressing is delicious.

I ate there with my wife yesterday, and the pizza was quite good. Bilbo's is a nice family oriented restaurant with a theme of the works of Tolkien. If you are a fan of Tolkien, you will likely recognize many of the characters from the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings on the menu. There are pizzas, salads and sandwiches named for Frodo, Gandalf, Samwise, Tom Bombadil, Smaug, etc. The pizza my wife and I tried was the Dragon's Feast, and it was basically a meat lovers pizza. It came out of the oven extremely hot. So hot in fact that I burned my mouth on the first bite. I would have appreciated a caution from the waitress that it was extremely hot, but recognize it was my fault. We tried the thin crust, so I cannot comment on the deep dish pizzas. The thin crust was very good. The waitress and staff seemed very friendly, and I would recommend the place to anybody in the area. I like the fact that this is an original style of pizza, and it does not seem that they are trying to copy anyone else. The place also has a bar attached, but we ate on the restaurant side. Definitely worth the visit, and a great place to eat if you love good original pizza.
