Its been a couple of years since I've been to the Sidedoor Saloon. A friend of mine wanted to catch the Detroit Tigers game one night and recommended the Sidedoor. I didnt remember them having a large screen TV but they did at the end of the bar. It was nice to see the Tigers win over a nice selection of local beers on tap - Founders All Day IPA was going down smooth. That evening was a busy one considering it was a Monday night and the entire place was busy - must have been their Cheeseburgers that brings them coming back for more. The interesting thing of note is that they steam their hamburgers in an old fashion steamer which gives it its distinct flavor. Burgs severed with chips as they do not have a fryer in house. Nightly specials - My buddy had their Chicken Pasta and he liked it. My previous review focused on the staff who were blasé about an issue I brought to their attention. But that person seems to have moved on. The Bartender Mark was friendly and accommodating - the wait staff also had smiles and were friendly as well. If you are looking for a nice clean local family bar restaurant and in the area, don't hesitate to visit and watch the Tigers ballgame and grab a bite to eat - I hear their Olive Burger is out of this world.

I'm not entirely surprised that no one has written a review - it's sort of off the beaten path for summer visitors (some of the winter visitors drive right past it and never go in, which is a shame). Generally, I don't like sports bars - I don't like sports and I don't like really loud restaurants and heck, I don't like breathing a lot of smoke. But I ADORE The Side Door. The Prime Rib is so very tasty and decently priced, but is generally a weekend special. I love their wraps too, if I'm there during the weekday. It is on the smaller side, space wise, so you will probably want to call ahead to let them know if you are going to bring a big party in 6+.

A great local gem. Burgers are Michigan-raised beef - clean and safe enough to order medium rare which is unheard of for ground beef. Nothing deep fried on the menu (not a fryer on the premises) all made-from-scratch and fresh items. Whitefish was exceptional. Smoked whitefish quesadilla was unusual and great. They invented the olive burger in 1969. You might not consider going because the modest appearance and location, but don't be fooled, this is an unusually great local place.

Yes, yes, and yes. Must haves: any of the burgers and the chicken quesadilla. Keep in mind, they don't have a deep fryer, so you'll have to sacrifice the fries to enjoy their burgers! Pretty good drink selection. Fun decor and decent patio seating in summer. If you need a burger and you're in Petoskey, look no further!

NOT your typical bar! The food is excellent, whether it's the prime rib, white fish Grenoble, quesadillas, wraps, or their world-famous olive burger. The service is friendly and efficient. Locals know this is the place for tasty meals and fun times.

Always stop in here when in town skiing, haven't tried much, always end up with the olive burger, hard item to pass up

We were looking for a decent meal while on a snowmobile trip. A local resident recommended this place, so we gave it a try. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and service. I had an Excellent garlic and olive oil marinated New York Strip steak and Caesar salad. Other people in our group had grilled salmon, gourmet burgers, veggie quesadillas and sirloin steaks. Everyone thought the food was great. The service was very friendly and efficient although the place was quite crowded.

Gets 5 stars because it's always great. Never a bad meal, it's affordable, good service and friendly staff. Like that it's locally owned and operated, too. Busy for a reason...

Good place to go if you have a group of people. There is something in the menu to satisfy every palette. I had the veggie quesadilla and it was really good! Fresh zucchini, mushrooms, corn, black beans, spinach and cheese. Nicely brown and crisp. Really yummy. My dad had the burger and said it was good. My son and daughter had chicken noodle soup and the it was not that good. Chicken was very, very dark. I picked most of it out because it didn't loom good. Otherwise the service was good and the atmosphere was pleasant.

We enjoy the Side Door because it has a menu that pleases everyone. GREAT burgers, but no french fries (no fryer on premises). One of our party usually chooses a wrap sandwich and loves 'em all. Meatloaf or BBQ Pork Sandwiches always winners. For me, it's the smoked whitefish nachos or quesadilla. We like their salad selection too. Oddly, the only dinners we have enjoyed are the nightly specials, like spaghetti night (!), but I'm sure the $12 - $20 tuna, steaks, Whitefish and Salmon selections are equally wonderful. FRI & SAT prime rib. Fall and Winter, come in for the "in-house tailgating" snacks and beers during televised NFL football games.

The Side Door has the best burgers in Northern Michigan, hands down. I recommend the Big Momma, but the Side Door will fill any palate too. They're juicy and served very fast. Tortilla soup and chili are also very good. This place is a great place to watch a game provided you can get a good seat. They've got an enormous TV and a couple of small ones, but the place gets crowded quickly on weekends during busy seasons because it's close to a lot of the resorts and vacation homes. Beer selection is good and prices are reasonable but not cheap. The Side Door used to be a pretty seedy place back in the day, a real saloon if you will, but the new owner has gotten a solid drink and food menu up and created a lively atmosphere. The downside of that of course is the touristy atmosphere. The burgers are worth it though.

Really good burgers! However they lack a deep fryer, so no French fry's or onion rings... Burgers and fry's are pretty much the staple food in a bars menu. Otherwise enjoyable for a burger and beer.

Been there several times and every time they are out of the prime rib...so disappointing! But everything else that we have ordered has been excellent!

Best food I had in Petoskey while visiting on vacation. great portions and food quality for price.

Perfect lunch, just what we were looking for. Prompt service even though they were having a very busy Saturday. I had the Chicken Club Sandwich on a Pretzel roll while the husband had the Pretzel Burger. Both were very tasty and reasonable prices. We'll be back!

I'm struggling between two and three stars... The service was actually very friendly, and the food was fine. The portions, however were pretty terrible. I had the whitefish sandwich and there was almost no fish! They love mayo and I don't, so the olive burger (olive/mayo mix) was out. Daughter had the kids pasta and there was so little we ordered a $6 pretzel to supplement. $70 for five people and we're still hungry.

Excellent burgers. They have a couple signature olive burgers with an mayo-olive mixture that are incredible. I had the olive mushroom bacon burger. It was outstanding. The Side Door is very family friendly, and has a nice mix of regulars and travelers passing through on Petoskeys main thoroughfare.

Prime Rib on Fri & Sat is why I go it's perfect-I always go a little more cooked than I normally would though (like if I want it medium-I'll order it medium-well). I also love any restaurant that serves bread and butter-keep that stuff coming, but maybe don't freeze the butter haha...not to worry I make it work

The Olive Mushroom Bacon Burger is delicious. Olive sauce was a bit to wet for me, ratio of olives to dressing. Some like it that way. Nice atmosphere, plenty of TV'S to catch a game. This is my forth time here and I have never been disappointed.

Show me some love Petoskey! This looks like the scariest place when you drive by - but when the MP and BIL said this is where we were going to have our evening cocktails, I was surprisingly excited! When you walk in the place does a great business! It looked more like a drinky place to me (being somewhat of a sports place), but apparently its just as big of a eating place!! Smells delicious and the servers are hustling and bustling! We sat at the bar because we were only drinking, but everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves! The woman next to me was eating the nightly special, spaghetti and meatballs!! Yo. Those balls be huge! I almost stuck my face in her plate. They also have these cute little shelves for your plates (if you sit at the bar) since the bar is slanted. Neat-O. The menu looked delicious and the place is decorated like a hunting lodge....!! Also have huge screen TVs and a lounge in the back if you want to just...lounge. The bartender was so friendly! The men ordered bourbon shots and I ordered a tequila shot.....being in Michigan, you can imagine my surprise when he asked if I wanted it chilled!! (The proper way to take a tequila shot). A++ Sir!! We certainly enjoyed ourselves and were sad we couldn't make it back before we left Michigan to try the food. That's ok, we'll see this place next summer!!! On spaghetti and meatball night, fo sho.

Came here based on Urbanspoon rating of 85% liked. Count me in the 15% that don't. Rather disappointing. Marginal service. It's a pub but can't get fries with a burger. No dinner salad available. Nothing but Splenda for iced tea. Burgers were served in a plastic basket ala Dairy Queen. Mine was drowned in mustard had a slice of onion nearly as thick as the burger. Poor execution for the price. Will not come back and cannot recommend.

Always so good, service is great, food is delicious. The dessert they have is so awesome, sometimes I just go there for that! Good place for lunch. Very much a bar atmosphere, tables are very crowded. But if you're looking for a quick bite to eat this is your place

Had a good menu- farm fresh ingredients. No frier. Steak and quesadilla were good. Kids had a pretzel as big as their heads. Grilled cheese wasn't melted though- only bad spot in our food.

Great burgers but also great wraps, salads and sandwiches. There is always a wait for dinner at the Side Door so be prepared. The food is reasonably priced and expertly prepared in the tiniest of kitchens. Sorry about your take, Jeff S., but I guess I wouldn't expect you to know "don't order fries at the Side Door" is the longest running joke in Petoskey. Also, the thick onion slice is their thing on that particular burger. I think it even says that on the menu. If you're looking for great food and cold beer at a reasonable price for a resort town, head to the side door.

Wow, so glad we listened to fellow yelpers and tried this place. The service was very friendly both times that we have been here. I tried the cajun burged the first time and liked it so much I had to get it again. Unfortunately my burger wasn't cooked to the perfect medium it was the first time. It was more like well-done. Still tasty, don't get me wrong. I liked that they had a Petoskey Brewing Co beer on tap but it didn't seem like they had that many more besides that.

We love coming to the Side Door! Nutty professor drink is to die for. Also love the quesadillas with seasoned sour cream. Prime rib is also good. The only thing preventing this from a 5 star is they don't have a fryer. (So only chips with your sandwich) Service has always been good for us and the place is always hopping on Saturday night.

The Side Door is consistently great. Great food and great service. A comfortable atmosphere that makes you feel as if you are in a northern lodge. Everything on the menu is delicious; the toughest decision is what to eat.

This has proven to be nice family spot for dining. Wait staff are always friendly and attentive. It can be a very busy place on Summer evenings so plan accordingly. I also like it's not a micro beer only selection like many places have become. We were a party of hour on a Saturday evening and only encountered a short wait for a table. Our dinner selections were served within a normal wait time and arrived hot. They tend to have daily specials. We plan on visiting again when in the area as we have in the past.

We'll stop in to the SDS a couple of times every summer and usually find the food decent and the service swell. Over the past few years SDS has done a great job of adding to the solid Burger menu. The white fish and salmon were very good and the price is fair. Our only complaint was a "weird" server who seemed to run between angry and overly attentive. It was truly off-putting. On another note the beer list is void of the many great beers that Michigan produces. (bummer).

Great beer & just had a few appetizers, but the atmosphere was nice & the food we ate was really good, had the brownie with reese peanut butter cups in it & the pretzel with cheese sauce. I hear the burgers are the best in town! There was a whitefish quesadilla that looked amazing too.

My husband and I went here for a drink and POSSIBLY some food. We had heard so many great things about the entire menu and thought that we would look it over while enjoying a tasty beer. When we arrived, about 60% of the restaurant was full, so it wasn't overly busy. We asked the hostess if we could just sit up at the bar and she said "Sure." So, we sat. And sat, and sat and sat. I even got up to see if there were any signs saying that we broke some sort of seating rule...but there wasn't. The older man behind the bar must have walked by us 10 times, never making eye contact, or speaking to us. Up until about the 3 minute mark, I was trying hard to give him the benefit of the doubt, thinking that perhaps he was in the weeds or overloaded. But he was just polishing glasses and WATCHING THE TV! My husband and I are both servers at local restaurants, so we have a pretty good idea of how these things work. People make mistakes, I get it. But we continued to sit there for OVER 10 MINS before being acknowledged. He ordered a basic beer and I asked what type of New Holland Beer they had on tap. The response I got was, "Oh, I'm not sure. Do you want a short one or a tall one?" Uhh, what?? So, we drank our beers and sat and sat and sat and sat with empty beer glasses for quite a while before an older woman came by and took them away. She asked if we wanted menus and by that point, we had been there for almost 45 mins. Kinda late for that, don't ya think? So, we declined, paid or bill and went elsewhere for dinner. I would have loved to try what everybody has bee raving about, but I don't think they wanted us to :( We may give this place another try, but we don't have much incentive to do so.

Great service and good food. Whitefish is plentiful in this area. The quesadillas had a great sauce served with them.

Definitely a local favorite. It's always crowded during the tourist season. I love the quesadilla Sonora and the buffalo chicken quesadilla. I mean, who raves about quesadillas...they are hard to screw up. But seriously, the 'dillas at Side Door are amazing! Good beer selection and full bar. Also, do the shot-ski! They have a nice covered patio for the warmer months.
