About 10 years ago this place was great. Now it's just hit or miss. And mostly misses. I love the coffee, but the surly attitude from the wait staff keeps me away. Not to mention the multiple health code violations I've witnessed every time I've eaten here. And yes, I am servesafe certified. The Lake Street salad is my go to, and occasionally the soup if it hasn't been sitting on the counter for too long. I'd really like to see the owners take action and make this shop better than what it is now. It has so much potential.

I came here with a bunch of friends at 11:30 today and even though the computer system was down, it was a great environment. I love local shops and finding this in Petoskey was a great start to the day. I ordered a cup of the tortilla corn chowder and the Blackwich. Both were AMAZING! The soup was very good - tasty and filling. The Blackwich was superb! The bacon was crispy, the avocado was plentiful, the chicken and the pesto aioli was delicious - a great pick and the quantity of food was more than enough. Grapes were also included with each plate of food. I loved the cafeteria, free-style method of the restaurant - you bring up your own plates, bus your own table, and their is a salad/oatmeal fixings bar.

While up north in Petoskey Michigan we stopped in one of our favorite spots roast and toast. We enjoyed in lunch starting with wonderful chicken leek soup, oh oh so yummy the soup was absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the veggie avocado sandwich and I ordered the BLT with avocado both sandwiches were dee licious we enjoyed our lunch and afterwards had a Michigan cherry coffee so so good it was like eating cherry cordials with a coffee twist we always enjoy the roast and toast whenever we make it to Petoskey Michigan. It's great to have a spot like this located in such a premier location. Can't wait to get back to roast and toast.

UGH. I wish I lived closer to you Roast & Toast. You are the example of what a coffee shop/ local owned and operated cafe should be! This is a must stop at location if you're in the Petoskey area. I think I've tried about 4 different drinks here thus far and each one was amazing. Just the right amount of espresso, just the right amount of flavor. Perfect temperature and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Yes. Just YES to this place.

I like Roast and Toast, It's a Petoskey staple. Food: 4/5. The food is all good, but they mostly do sandwiches with bread that tends to be somewhat weak. They put a lot of stuff on the sandwich which makes it sort of fall apart after a while. I recommend getting the veggie bread as that tends to be the strongest of their bread. Coffee: 4/5. I like getting coffee from them for my coffee at home. It tends to be quite good. Especially the peaberry stuff. Coffee drinks: 3/5. They're coffee beverages like mochas and lattes are in no way bad, I would just consider them average. I prefer my lattes and mochas to be stronger than the ones they do, with lots of flavor, but even adding an espresso shot doesn't bring me to coffee bliss like Dripworks or North Perk do. Atmosphere: 4/5. Fun, smells great, free WiFI. A good place to meet a friend and catch up downtown.

I'm from out of town and love hole in the wall places vs chain restaurants. Took my parents here and place was crowded but food was prepared fairly quick. However they did forget one of our meals. For all of the coffees they do have my parents were disappointed no "regular" coffee. Overpriced for the small portions.

Great sandwiches on thick, fresh baked bread, served with fruit. They also have Northwoods Soda Pop, which is made in northern MI. My wife found it to taste fresher than typical pop. Reasonable prices in downtown too.

Second time here and or sandwiches were delicious. Wasn't too packed July 4th weekend either. Ordered the black end chicken sandwich as a pita and it was superb. Fiance ordered the turkey sandwich and it was even better than mine. The kettle cooked chips from traverse city are some of the best

Turkey avocado club and homemade soup - yes to mixing the potato and chicken florentine if they have it. The almond joy with almond milk mocha was delish! They never disappoint!

First time here, visiting from Madison,WI. We are really impressed. The 10 person line was reduced in just a few minutes. After ordering our coffee was ready immediately, but the food took about 10 min to come out. We did a BYO breakfast wrap that came out hot and tasted awesome! Seating was plentiful with about 20 table tops, and a few open despite the holiday weekend (here on July 5th). Would definitely recommend.

Huge selection of coffee drinks and creative sandwiches. Fun atmosphere!

Cute coffee shop with great baked items and breakfast wraps. Stopped here for a quick breakfast on our way to the ski hill and was very happy to find this gem! Great coffee and espresso drink selection. We had the Denver egg wrap sandwich which came with home fries and fruit for 5.95. We will be back to try the soup and sandwich next time were in town. You have a fan for life!

Great joint! Good food and decor. Too bad the staff is not really invested in your experience. I had to figure out what, where and when on my own. 3 girls stood behind the counter, too caught up in their conversation to care whether I could find the forks...which I couldn't until another patron pointed them out. Too bad...

The quality of the food is always outstanding. Fresh flavorful ingredients combined in a seemingly endless number of ways. Tourists and locals all flock to Roast and Toast. A true gem that kids of all ages and parents of all ages can agree on. The most sophisticated palates will not be disappointed, whether you are just stopping for coffee and a pastry or putting the feedbag on. The atmosphere is charming and the ambitious menu choices mean you will never be bored with the menu. A Petoskey favorite for tourists and locals alike!

I am a big fan of Roast & Toast, feelings that go beyond three insta-observations: - I love their font - I appreciate any establishment that shares an affection for rhyme - I applaud their colourful quirky vibe (neon! tin! Weezer on the loud speaker!) The coffee is roasted in-house, and the people behind the bar seem truly proud of the product they're serving. The coffee drinks are great quality, but what really stands out is the variety of drink options using coffee as the base. An iced chai drink is made special with a spicy mix of cinnamon and peach syrup. A banana is blended with coffee, chocolate and caramel syrup for another iced treat. Fruit smoothies, italian sodas, fresh juices...a perfect place for any and everyone in the Petoskey area to keep hydrated this summer. Yelp note: lunch rush can get busy (for good reason - the soup, salads and sandwiches smell delicious).

Came in on Monday, July 14th after calling at 11:00am to see if we needed a breakfast reservation. We were told we did not, but that we could just come right in and experience a Panera Bread type setting. Got in at 11:15 and apparently breakfast had ended at 11. We were told we could still order breakfast, so we did and each person in line from my group had to explain that we had been approved to still order breakfast. We could hear the chefs in the back complaining with each additional order. The ladies at the register were rude and made it seem like taking our orders was a huge hassle. Food was okay but nothing special. House fries came out 1/2 cooked. The cook forgot sausage from my egg wrap but brought it out later on. Cute atmosphere and decent prices for decent food, but not great service.

Great food. Fast, friendly service. Unique specialty drinks with fun names inspire your adventurous side. Of course the coffee is great too!

Good coffee. Average sandwich. Watched employees disregard so many aspects of sanitary food handling that I wouldn't go back. Also, bathroom was disgusting and it appeared its the same one the employees use.

Roast and Toast is a fun, funky cafe with excellent house roasted coffee. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. Soups are house made, daily, breads are baked every morning, and bagels are brought in by Johan's Bakery. Coffee drinks are super affordable (much better priced than a certain chain coffee shop, and definitely better tasting), and yummy! The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. It does get very busy at this hot spot, so they sometimes have little chance to chat. Don't take offense, they're just trying to get everyone served. My only criticism might be that the restaurant is very busy and looks worn out. I know they clean it, so I'm not concerned about cleanliness or food safety, but those who aren't familiar with it, might think it is dirty, even if it isn't. Really, it is clean, just ignore the age. Try Roast and Toast, you won't be disappointed.

Great place to stop in Petoskey for a good cup of brew and really good assortment of soup, sandwiches and wonderful breakfast fare. Staffed by a crew of really nice local kids whose pleasant and charming comportment always help guests to feel welcome.

If you like flies buzzing around inside a pastry case, a dirty floor of food and a lax staff who doesn't care, then Roast and Toast is the place for you! When this place first opened, it was good, now it's terrible. I haven't been in years, but my family wanted soup for dinner. My first choice didn't have soup they liked, so I went to Roast and Toast out of desperation. The girl who was trying to "vaccuum", was using an old carpet sweeper - that didn't work. After several attempts, she left the crumbs....and the dirty empty table of half eaten food. If you decide to go, look at the floor - guarenteed crumbs! Soup was gone by 2pm and they said "she's working on making more" but couldn't answer the questions of how long it will be, or what soups are coming out, even when I asked them to ask the kitchen. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited....and waited....20 minutes later, a new soup came out - ONE. They said this is all they had, even though I was told something different. After several attempts, I finally got reimbursed and left. No wonder I haven't been here in years, it is the same as always.

Loved it! If I lived closer than 6+ hours away I'd be here regularly. A fun, funky atmosphere makes you feel comfortable. An extensive menu of soups, salads, sandwiches, and oodles of creative coffee / hot chocolate warm-ups are all so tempting. A friendly, helpful staff seals the deal! I warmed up with a steaming bowl of homemade soup for $4, noshed on some moist banana bread and enjoyed a delicious hot chocolate. Definitely worth the stop.

We ordered a Caesar and a Garden salad -- kind of small for the price, but fresh enough tasting. The tomatoes actually had tomato taste! The menu was intruiging though, and I'd go back.

This seems to be the hip spot in Petoskey for young 20-somethings to come and hang out. Even before entering Roast & Toast screams personality with it's cup and saucer mosaic lining the store front. The menu is found on the left wall after you enter and it boasts a fair amount of options somewhat standard for a coffee/sandwich shop. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and it consisted of a decent sized portion, at times falling out of the wheat bread. The chicken tasted fresh and the bread was nice and soft but overall the sandwich was somewhat dry. Still it wasn't the worst chicken salad sandwich I've ever had. The generous serving made up for the dryness. My fiance ordered a cinnamon roll and it was fairly large. It didn't taste nearly as fresh as my sandwich but it was still good. It was a standard cinnamon roll with nothing fancy. To drink I think I had something called a "Chai cow." It was a chilled Chai Tea Latte I believe. Unfortunately I don't remember the name but I do recommend it. The fiance had a peach smoothie that was delicious. Both drinks were hand made, fresh to order. All in all I'd easily go back in I'm ever in the area again.

Turkey avocado sandwich is delicious and so is the coffee. The cafe has a young, funky artist vibe. Also the coffee cups lining the doorway make this spot hard to miss.

This weekend I visited R&T for the second time. It is the perfect place to stop in for lunch if you are strolling around Petoskey, doing some shopping, enjoying the weather etc. A big plus for me are the soups. I've stated in other posts that I love soup and I get it whenever I can, no matter the season. Roast and Toast shuffles in four different soup offerings each day. They range from the classics to more unique kinds. I'm told the soup bar used to be "all you can eat" but they had to put a limit on it. Depending on the soup there are add-ons which you can help yourself too. This time I went with the Broccoli Cheese and added shredded cheese and crutons on the top. The sandwiches and bread always taste fresh. This time I added a strawberry smoothie which was perfect on a hot summer day. If you find yourself in Petoskey looking for a quick lunch stop, walk no further down Lake Street passed Roast and Toast.

I'm a vegetarian, so I'm glad that they have an actual tasty sandwich for me. Even though it's a little on the expensive side, I forgive them because I'm just so happy I can have soup and a sandwich (it's surprisingly rare to find vegetarian soups).

I have loved all the drinks I've ever gotten here. I've been here multiple times over the past 2 years or so. It is my coworker's absolutely favorite dirty chai ever, in the world. My favorite is 'autumn sunset' (I believe it's called), which is also SHOCKINGLY affordable.

    (5)
  • Kristina A.

Thought we'd try this out from reading all the other reviews....but my husband wasn't impressed at all.....my chai was weak, and his coffee was ridiculuously expensive.... Maybe lunch is better, but I think I'll stick with my regular place for coffee and drinks....

While swinging through Petoskey on a business trip, I couldn't stand the suspiciously spotty coffee maker in my hotel and went out in search of local caffeine. I wound up visiting Roast & Toast twice during my short stay there, once for lunch and then breakfast. It's a quirky place decorated with found memorabilia and run by friendly people in their early 20s. In Ann Arbor, something like this would be stricken with pretentiousness and students stuck behind laptops, but it seems locals and tourists of all ages frequent the place. And even in the off-season, the place fills up fast for lunch. I stopped by around noon on a rainy Wednesday in late October, and the line was nearly running out the door. The menu is sprawled all over one side on a blackboard. There's free Wi-Fi and a big shelf full of board games in the back. Right before I left town, I stopped by for a cuppa joe and their nutty French toast, which was this gargantuan, wonderfully eggy piece of bread covered in nuts and served with Michigan maple syrup. It was perfect for sharing - highly recommended, if you have a sweet tooth in the morning.

Occasionally, a restaurant experience defines your view of a town or a trip. On our little stop-over in Petoskey in September, my lunch at this restaurant made me love the town. To quote my wife, "Why don't we have one of these in our town?" Hard to get excited about a soup and sandwich normally, but their great execution of a fun menu made our day.

Location ***** Sandwiches ***** soup **********!!!!!!!!!!!!! YUMMMMMMMY coffee *** Service *** Hours * I guess I'm a Chicago Coffee Snob...but I can't understand a coffee shop that closes at 8pm during the summer....just can't Coffee is ok...not really strong...but I'm a spoiled Cajun girl who likes her coffee STRONG It's a cute place. Location is good... THE SOUP ROCKS Sandwiches are good too. the hours...are LAME though!!!!

Except for what I make, they had the best egg salad sandwich I've ever had. The sourdough bread was fresh, the portion size good enough. As for the pricing, I do think they should at least give you chips with the sandwich and was surprised about that. After exploring Petoskey a bit, I went back for coffee and a lemon bar later and thought that was very good, too. Yep, I'd go back again for that egg salad!

Delicious sandwiches and smoothies. The fast-paced atmosphere at first appears chaotic to a newcomer. Great place to stop in for a sandwich and soup while shopping your way through Petosky.

    (4)
  • Huston M.

Would get a better rating if the menu was priced accordingly. It's overpriced for what you get. Although the soup is EXCELLENT! The sandwiches are put together poorly and often fall apart. Good Coffee.

    (3)
  • Laura P.

The coffee and mixed drinks are great. The bread is so fresh and soft and perfect! The soup bar is delicious. I try to go every time I'm home from college. Yes, there are long lines, especially in the summer (or weekends in the winter), but it is generally worth it. I lived in Petoskey for 5+ years and I can count the number of times they've messed up a sandwich on my hand (if you look at the ticket, it is usually that the person who takes your order doesn't hear you right).

Overrated. If you enjoy going to coffee shops described as "hip" or "funky" because you like to be seen at hip or funky coffee shops, then you might want to check this place out. The level of funk was exceeded only by the level of hip milling about in a chaotic swirl. However, if you like going to coffee shops because you want a decent cup of coffee in a reasonable amount of time, well, you might want to step aside and let the funky hipsters through. I was visiting friends in Horton Bay over Memorial Day weekend and part of my morning routine is to have a nice leisurely cup of coffee. I like to grab a paper (or my iPad) and catch up on the news while I enjoy my java. There is, unfortunately, a dearth of coffee shops in the Horton Bay/Boyne City/Petoskey area. This one was really the only one for me within reasonable distance, so I decided to check it out. It was hard to find a parking spot, but that's not their fault. I drove around downtown for 10 minutes before I found a metered spot to park in. After walking a few blocks to the shop, the first thing I noticed upon opening the door was how crowded it was. I guess this is to be expected, since there are no other coffee shops in the area. Your coffee options are 1) make it yourself 2) Roast & Toast 3) McDonalds The second thing I noticed was just how "hip" and "funky" it was. And I don't really mean that in a good way. I live near Ann Arbor and spend considerable amounts of time and money there, so I'm no stranger to quirky and trendy downtown shops. But everyone here just seemed to be trying too hard to look like they were hanging around in a coffee shop and being funky. I ordered a plain cappuccino (a reasonable benchmark of a good coffee shop) from a young twentysomething hipster with Justin Beiber hair who spent far too much time talking to the girls in line and far too little time doing his job and making coffee. So little time, in fact, that I sat there for 5 minutes wondering what was going on behind the counter before I finally got up and asked him what the deal was. Woops, he forgot to start making it. Five minutes later I had a mediocre, slightly bitter, completely forgettable cup of coffee. There was a thin layer of coffee grounds in the bottom of the cup - not the usual mud you get in a good cup of espresso, but actual grainy coffee grounds. I paid $4.50 for the coffee plus $1 to the tip jar for this privilege. Ugh. But at least I got to carry on the tradition of talking about how funky this place is. Huzzah!

Dirty. Real dirty. I am currently dining at Roast & Toast as I write this and if I weren't already aware that I have never actually gotten sick eating here I would avoid it. I happen to have stopped in with optimism that Roast & Toast might have improved on it's cleanliness since last year. The menu has all of the characteristics of a healthier cafe menu, their smoothies are good but the grit of the overall space is off putting. The soup bar looks so disgustingly plowed through that I immediately regretted ordering a side of soup at all. Not to mention, people preparing food pull back their hair for a reason. Despite the overall dirtiness there still are plenty of people in a line reaching the door which I assume is as much for a coffee fix as for Sunday desperation to find a restaurant that is open. Contact me when things are tidied up Roast & Toast and I will be your best customer, you have a nice location but maybe you should consider removing all items from the space and power washing all things inside. Thanks.

It's important to find good coffee on a road trip. I spent one night up in Petoskey in the midst of a snowboarding trip. I stopped at Roast & Toast on Saturday morning to get fueled up for epic powder runs at Nub's Knob. The staff was friendly and the Kenya AA was very good. It's nice to see them roasting the beans right there in the shop. My Lorraine egg wrap was decent too. Good spot.

Lived in San Diego for a couple years, but I am from this area. There were cafés all over, but nothing compares to my roast and toast! Missed you guys! I'm glad to have this place back in my life... What amazes me the most about this place is it is not age discriminate. At lunch, young and old alike enjoy this wonderful setting. I hope it stays this way!

  • Dean C.

Incredibly rude help. Ordered oatmeal, a bowl was put on the counter, had to find the oatmeal myself which was empty. Had to get the attention of someone, not easy. Seems that if you are not part of the group you are ignored even if you are a customer. Food was great!

Our family's favorite spot to stop for a sandwich, amazing soups and delicious coffess and dessert. Very nice vibe with a friendly staff that takes orders quickly ... even when it looks jammed. Beware of Downtown on a rainy day ... it's mobbed!

I love this place, and make a point to eat here every time I'm in town. The drinks are fantastic and unique, and the sandwiches are good. The veggie bread is great! I love the staff there, too.

Joshua R. is right, this is THE coffee shop in Petoskey. There are about 40 interesting coffee drinks to choose from, tons of freshly made sandwiches, a good selection of soups, not to mention several breakfast choices like burritos, french toast, and pancakes. It is the perfect place to fuel up after a long night out.

My hard to please Australian colleague said this place made the best espresso that he'd ever had in America. I'd say that's quite a compliment.

No review yet? Crazy. I only get to visit Roast & Toast once in a while 'cause Petoskey's a bit of a haul from TC, but I always make a point of stopping here for lunch or coffee or both. May I just say, if nothing else, try their soup bar. I always forget to ask if they create the soups onsite, but even if they don't...YUM. Don't care. I've never, ever been disappointed ordering a cup or a bowl, and neither will you. The sandwiches are all quite tasty and fresh-tasting. Salads look good, too. I may veer over to that part of the menu one day. Smooth coffee with on-site (right?) roasting. I took a group of eight women here for lunch and all left with satisfied smiles on their faces. Just go there and slurp. You won't be sorry.

Just OK. Coffee was cold, iced tea didn't have much ice. Workers were gabbing with each other, and a bit rude. It was way too warm inside.

Roast + Toast has good coffee drinks and tasty sandwiches. The atmosphere is pleasantly funky for Petoskey and the staff seemed hip and friendly on a recent visit. Prices are reasonable and they have free WiFi.

Great coffee, great food, great atmosphere. Order the Chicken Club on vegetable bread. (The bleu cheese pesto mayo is to die for, and I don't even like bleu cheese) You also can't go wrong with the soups-they make them fresh from scratch every morning. There's usually a line, (often locals) which should be the first indication that it's worth the wait.

Best cafe in Petoskey, maybe in all of Michigan. Food is good, but coffee is great. Especially the espresso. Nice interior design and chill staff. On my last visit the guy even gave me a cookie for free since he said I was working too hard - thanks! :)

    (5)
  • Kirstin B.

OK, decison overload when you come here ... I have never seen so many choices for a coffee drink before, and I wish I had time to try every one of them. The atmosphere is fun, coffee was good - not great (for me - my aunt said it was the best iced latte she had ever had ...). The baked goods are awesome, creative and fun. We will definitely be back to sample more coffee selections and hopefully a lunch item or two. (Oh, and don't miss the bookstore next door!)

  • Lisa D.

Great selection of house roasted coffee. Join their coffee club. Don't be scared of the employees - they're all really friendly. The funky atmosphere is unique to the harbor petsokey area and a refreshing change from all the refined resorter coffee shops

I visited the roast and toast a couple times while in petoskey. I liked them, very quirky little place with artsy fun paint all over everything. Now for a place like this to impress me beyond belief is hard, because Im from Jersey and I frequent Philly and have seen my share of quirky little coffee shops. Needless to say, the atmosphere made me feel at home. I loved that they had what seemed like a thousand kinds of different coffee drinks to choose from. I remember my sandwich being good, not blowing my mind, but, I am quite picky as it is anyways. I drank a latte with raspberries, white chocolate something or other, and loved it.

    (4)
  • William W.

Love roast and toast...soups are the best...dishes are even better...the place itself is the perfect mix of fun and function. But the most important part is the folks working there are not put out by the fact that you came in to eat or grab coffee. They are happy ..helpfull and take ownership. Net net they appear to want to be there...a credit two them and the owner who is smart enough to know thats important...would have givin 5 stars if you sold Pepsi fountain like the old days...sometimes you got to have a DEW!

Roast & Toast is THE coffee shop that you want in your town. Enough said. Alright I'll say more: they roast coffee here, a very good thing. The food is better than standard coffee shop stuff. Really good stuff, great atmosphere, computers if you need to rent them. Also the soups and salads especially are good for lunch and are a sort of famous in the area.

Some of the best soups and salads in the area. The dinner menu is broad and varied; everything is tasty. Of course the coffee selection is one of the best in the area.

I was a big fan of Roast and Toast. They had a great selection of soups, sandwiches, and salads, to go along with an array of interesting coffee drinks. The ingredients seemed pretty top notch, and the self-service model worked well for the space. A great spot in Northern Michigan.

    (5)
  • Thuoc N.

The sandwiches are extremely overpriced and come with VERY little meat. I was about to change my order but was too frustrated to even worry about it. They have thick bread which makes it look like a big sandwich but in actuality it SUCKS. However, my sister ordered a salad and she said it was excellent. The coffee might be ok but I sure wouldn't order food from there again. Also there are too many "wanna-be" hipsters hogging tables and thinking they are so cool with all their tattoos. Too bad they will still be unemployed when they are in their 50s with all their hipster tattoos.

As someone who successfully managed an organic coffee and tea shop for several years I love a great coffee shop and scrutinize it in equal measure. Upon moving back to Northern Michigan I was thrilled to see such a cool and edgy place in downtown Petoskey. I've read the reviews, and get why some are negative as they have some valid points, but overall I think it is a nice establishment with decent coffee (I have yet to try the food.) As for the cleanliness issue raised in other reviews, it could be a lot cleaner but the thing is when you have food and coffee (which stains easily) you are going to have less than pristine looking walls and counters and when you are super busy, you aren't going to get every little crumb.) I have been there about a dozen times and like the vibe so much, but found the drinks to be lacking in "kick". I hate, hate, hate their system for getting drinks to the customer and find that a little organization and training could improve this. Also, get rid of the soda machine and they might have room to line up drinks and it won't take as long for customers to get theirs. It is a coffee shop, not a diner. People can get soda elsewhere. That thing is a huge waste of space and it is ultimately hurting their business. Roast and Toast is so close to getting a five star rating for so many reasons, and I hope they eventually address the issues because I like going there a lot, and I found the staff to be pleasant.

I always visit the local shops when I can. The staff was friendly and the americano was tasty. The only problem was that I ordered it iced, and it came out hot. I just took it because I was on a tight time schedule. I'm sure they would have corrected the problem.

I love the In- house prepared soups, they have a fun selection to choose from! The coffee is oh so good! Ample seating and plugs for your techy stuff! staff is very friendly and yes free wi-fi holla! Frank and I visited this joint and on the video @ 1:18 a friendly little bat was sitting by us outside! Good times youtube.com/watch?v=aaWJ…

Such a cute spot with frilly coffee drinks, bakery treats and breakfast items. It's a must for us when we visit Petoskey

This MAY be THE coffee shop in Petoskey. And frankly, I think I am being generous with 3*. Nothing I had was really very good. Almost everyone I was with had something wrong with the food that they ordered - one wrap was missing the cheese - one sandwich had mayo were there was not supposed to be mayo - some other ingredient was missing in a salad. Also the ordering and waiting for food process was needlessly cumbersome. Still, we ended up being a big group of people mid-day at this place. We annexed a bunch of tables and lingered for a while, and nobody made us uncomfortable or asked us to leave. So maybe that is worth 3* right there. What I learned coming here, is that just because you roast it yourself, doesn't mean you can brew it up into a thick rich cup of jolting joe. And just because a place is popular, doesn't make it good. Next time, I'd go for the salad. Looked the best of the lot.

Every time I visit Petoskey, I make sure to stop into this coffee shop/cafe. I've never had the food, but it always looks good to me. They seem to feature the Three Ss (soups, salads, and sandwiches). I really enjoy looking at their latest coffee creations and deciding which to pick. Today, I opted for the Thai Iced Coffee, which was a steal at under $2.00. Most of the specialty espresso drinks are at least a dollar more than that. I enjoy the names of the drinks, such as the Accidental Tourist, the Yorkie, the Construction Zone, and the Butterfinger Mocha (I mean, who could see those words and not want one?). I've tried some baked goods and they were very good, and large. This place seems to attract a bunch of different people: parents with kids and strollers; students getting work done; twentysomethings going shopping; and Amy Winehouse lookalikes hanging out and hogging tables for an hour. It's your "typically atypical" coffee house.

fun, FUNKY, eclectic, HIPPIE... We stopped in for a coffee after a filling lunch...it was really COOL inside.. Very unique set up, you could spend hours inside, studying, visiting, chatting... Friendly and fun!

A small coffee shop with food in downtown Petoskey. The front of the place has coffee cups attached to the face of the building. Free WiFi is an added bonus. The menu is written on a chalk-board. The menu is made up of breakfast items, salads, sandwiches, soups, and wraps. Today I had the breakfast vegetarian wrap, and spicy potatos. It was so yummy. If you visit Petoskey, you must stop at the Roast and Toast. I can't wait to come back.

Great coffee and food! My favorite sandwich is the turkey avocado club - delicious. The coffee is excellent, but it can be difficult to hear your name being called when it is busy. There is also not much room to move - or wait for your coffee - on a busy day. It is always worth the wait, though...love the atmosphere, service, location, food, and drinks!

I'm all about supporting the smaller coffee shops.. the problem is, NONE of them ever seem to live up to the hype and this place doesn't appear to be an exception. The reviews here seem to be the work of tourists who were happy to on vacation, and easily charmed by this place's artistic decor (come on, isn't everything better when you're on vacation?) .While some have described the interior as artsy, hip, or funky, the vibe the patrons gave the place was much more "spoiled Birmingham teenager" than creative or artistic. The definitely did not help the place in terms of authenticity. Don't get me wrong, it was not without it's charm, but I came here for coffee.. and for close to 4 dollars a piece for a 16oz coffee, they were both a swing and a miss. I had some peanut butter concoction that conjured little or no reaction from my senses, and my g/f had a coconut flavor drink that she had to go back and ask for more coconut flavoring... the girl behind the counter happily obliged and what little service we required was very pleasant... no complaints there. Not sure if it was an off day, but they were just over priced and not that good. Didn't try the food, and have little or no interest in soups that a lot of people have been complimentary about. I would probably go back, you just won't find me sprinting past the tables of androgynous teen-aged boys who are constantly flipping there hair like Justin Bieber, in order to try it again.

Another great find in Petosky! We had just walked the trail of the Bear River and were looking for a fast lunch. We were thrilled to see there vast soup offerings. We both enjoyed the Beef Vegetable noodle, the flavor was very good and the crusty bread you get with was perfect! I had a chicken salad sandwich that I would not recommend as it was pretty bland and all around not so special. I would go back in a second for more soup and would definitely give their coffee a go!

We came here because of the high Yelp reviews but were not impressed. French toast was dry, tasteless and yuck, food wasn't seasoned and lacked much flavor. It was very busy, loud, and hectic. Didn't know if we should sit down for a server or wait in a line. The bagels were good.

Would give this 3 1/2 stars if that was possible :) Well, I went back for breakfast! Twice!:) My husband liked the bacon and we both liked the french toast. The baked eggs were so-so. I didn't care for the blueberry pancakes, they were very dry and I barely ate one of the three. I had a chocolate/fruit muffin....I'm not sure what was in it exactly, they said it was chocolate chunk but there was definitely a fruit flavor and some kind of nut in there too. It was good, just not what I expected. I tried an Accidental Tourist--basically a mocha with peanut butter...mmmm. Kind of chaotic with people ordering, then sitting down, then hopping back up to get their food at the counter when their name is called, so don't expect a relaxing atmosphere. A fun and different place for a meal nonetheless.

I've been here a couple of times and I really wanted to like this place but both times I went I've had horrible experienes. The first time I went it was summertime about a year ago and all I really remember is how put off I was at the cashier. She was blatantly rude and unattentive, almost like I was bothering her. I came back to Visit for the holidays and my sister and I decided to run in and get some soup after some shopping. I forgot about my past service and agreed we could use some yummy warm soup on a winters day. Big mistake. My sister ordered soup and a coffee to go. I ordered soup and hot chocolate to go. Easy enough? Nope. To get our completed order we had to wait 30 minutes!! My sister's soup came out pretty fast so we grabbed a table to wait for mine. It was pretty busy in there so I thought maybe they had to serve other costumers their food before they could get to, literally, just pouring some soup in a to go container. Turns out no one planned on getting that for me and I had to ask the cashier after about 10 minutes of waiting. She filled it up about half way and handed it to me. After about 5 more minutes I had to go up and ask about my hot chocolate. They told me it would be a couple of minutes because they had to warm it up on the stove? That actually ended up being another 20 minutes. They also never ended up bringing out my sisters coffee so she had to go to the front cashier to ask for a cup so she could help herself to getting her coffee. This place is just totally unorganized and too chaotic. Most of the workers seem to be young and were Mingling with costumers that seemed to be their friends. My sister said it felt like a highschool cafeteria when I exclaimed that I was thinking that!! They should definitely hire more experienced people because they have no idea how to run a cafe smoothly. I mean seriously, 30 minutes for 2 soups a hot chocolate and a coffee, during which we had to go up to the cashier 3 times!! The cashier exclaimed " it's so busy!" with a sort of flustered look on her face. I don't think these employees can handle it. I won't ever be going back.

I hate to be a negative Nancy, but I really should have heeded previous reviews on this place. I was passing through town for a work assignment. I'll admit, I am from downstate. However, I am not impressed with Petoskey on the whole--not a friendly town to visitors which is unfortunate for a town that survives on tourists. Now for my review of this place. I stopped because of previous positive reviews of their homemade soups and I desired something light for lunch. I was a bit put off by the "self-serve" soup, which was discovered by staff when I gave her a funny look after she tossed a bowl on the counter as I was ordering. I wonder how the health department lets them get away with customers helping themselves to the soup. Also, soup is intended to be served hot not lukewarm. Although it was tasty soup, I had a tough time really enjoying in its cold form. I'll take a pass next time, but thanks for the wifi.

My daughter had the Cranberry Cafe Spinach Salad and loved it. My wife had the half sandwich and cup of soup which she loved. I had the Blackwich sandwich and Creamy Chicken Quesadilla Soup. It was wonderful. My other daughter had a special request sandwich which I won't go into, but she was happy with it. We loved everything about roast & toast. We will visit again.

I've been in love with Roast & Toast since the 8th grade. Perfect cafe in downtown Petoskey has plenty of seating (because they're always packed), and a wonderful atmosphere. When you walk in, you head to one of the cash registers to order your coffee or lunch. The drink board is full of tasty barista creations. Several varieties of drip coffee available as well. You can even purchase beans to take home. Their lunch is fantastic.. soups/salads/sandwiches and combo options available. I'm in love with their chicken salad sandwich. I had 1/2 a sandwich and a cup of 5 bean soup. They serve their lunch with a side, the day i was in the side was sliced watermelon. After you order, find a seat and they will yell your name when your meal is ready. If you aren't looking for a meal then you should check out their pastry case.. always filled with fresh goodies. They are doing something right at Roast & Toast.

I've been here twice and would say it is a must-try breakfast spot for visitors to Petoskey. Cool decor and nice seating options (couple of small window tables near the entrance, and also some half-booths set into the back wall). Dynamic menu for light vs hearty meals and a display case for a-la-carte goodies. Also a nice drink menu for lattes, mochas, and smoothies. Order at the counter, grab a table and they'll call your name when it's ready. I dropped a star because the menu was a little chaotic, latte was a little too syrupie (yes, that is now a word), and their "spicy" potatoes got my hopes up about a heat index, only to disappoint me with a hodge-podge of clashing spices they dusted them with... I LOVE spices, even without making me sweat when I eat. I would normally say: "the more the merrier", but this was a strange combination of spices on those potatoes that I would suggest they reconsider, but that's just me and I did NOT intend to go on a rant about some potatoes. I will still be back next time I'm in Petoskey.

My favorite place for food & coffee in the world! The Avocado sandwich on sourdough is to die for. I love it! All the sandwiches are freshly made and taste wonderful. They have a great selection of coffee beans to choose from to take home and so many delicious drinks on the menu. I had an Alaska thing, which was iced chai and mhm so good! I had an iced chai at another cafe the next day which was a couple of dollars more expensive and I regretted not going to Roast & Toast.

Swung through on our way to Walloon Lake cabin. Had the Almond Mocha Joy Latte which was quite tasty. My Scone left a lot to be desired though. My dad had a cinnamon roll that also wasn't anything to write home about but enjoyed his Dirty Irish coffee. So I would say specialty drinks are good, very sweet but maybe stay away from the baked goods.

ROAST & GROSS !!!!!! It looks cute on the outside, but the food is bad ! I watched the so-called cooks prepare sandwiches , soup and salads. They don't wash their hands and reuse the soup containers over and over again without washing them. Which we all know is a no no. Cross contamination ! I ordered a salad ...it had black pieces of old chicken in it, the spinach was old and turning brown and it was drenched in salad dressing ! The ice tea was hot too ! I took it back and got a refund (no questions asked...hmmmm). However the girl that waited on me @ the counter was nice about my return of the salad..

Soups are good and sandwiches are better than average. As long as you can get over that the person making your food looks like they haven't showered in months you should be fine.

Needed to grab dinner for two hungry adults and two hungry kiddos, all while dressed like dirty camping bums & this was the right place! Low key, unlike most of the upscale places in Petosky. The food was amazing and I wanted to order everything off their menu! I got the Lake Salad and a cup of black bean soup. My kids got strawberry lemonade smoothie and grilled cheese. My hubs got the chicken gyro and some sort of delicious mocha latte. Cute place, with very friendly staff. They also sell local whole bean coffee.

This is the weirdest review I'll give on Yelp. YES THEIR COFFEE IS SO GOOD... However I left there feeling stressed out. The barista was yelling and spilling milk on the floor. It's just coffee lady... Everything's okay. Bad environment but excellent coffee. If you don't care about sitting around there then it's a 5, but something was off.

Excellent coffee, awesome baked goods, just okay food. If you're looking for a coffee and sweet treat, Roast and Toast is perfect. Their baristas do a good job with the coffee drinks, and the atmosphere is casual and fun. For meals, they're ok, but not my favorite. I find their soup flavors to be slightly odd, and are frequently very greasy. Their sandwiches are a little better, but nothing I would call special. Have a mocha and a nanaimo bar instead.

Absolutely love the place. I go there for coffee and breakfast. Yes, it is quirky, different, in an old building, and is anything but mainstream - which are all part of what makes it a wonderful place to go and have coffee or a bite to eat. I am always impressed by the staff - I was there the morning of the sidewalk sale and they were working like a machine. I like that I get to try a different coffee almost every day. They brew and have available at least three caffeinated and two decaf coffees available. It may be Rwandan, Ethiopian, Colombian, Amaretto, Tanzanian Peaberry, Mocha, Java, or something else. The cinnamon rolls are very good, as are the bagels, scones, and muffins. All fresh baked and not your run of the mill stuff (strawberry orange zest scones - very good!). Each day can have different baked goods. The cherry cream cheese is made in house. They have great breakfast sandwiches and you can even get oatmeal (and add nuts and dried cherries). You can sit outside in front (limited) inside, or on the back deck overlooking Little Traverse Bay. Free wifi works best either in the back of the restaurant or in the window seats up front.

Local favorite . Great food and good coffee. Speciality drinks are so-so as they use chocolate milk to make most of them. Try the blackened chicken Cesar salad or avacado club sandwich ! Delicious !

A great inviting place- really quirky and eccentric. Really highly trafficked by the tourists here- maybe because of the design and ambiance more than the coffee and food?

This was an incredible sandwich. The bread was just amazingly soft and every ingredient was just so fresh and wonderful. I loved the fact that they didn't have an overwhelming amount of choices for sandwiches (like most sandwich places often do) but I LOVE the large variety of drinks you can order. I got a frozen latte type drink and it was perfection on a summers day. When we went, it was a group of 6 of us and we were pretty crowded but it was still a very fast service. It is slightly more expensive for the amount you get, but the quality is something that they definitely don't skimp on.

Great find! Delightful coffee house and cafe. We stopped in for lunch and had an avocado veggie sandwich and a blackwich (blackened chicken with bacon and avocado) and Irish potato soup. All of the items were delicious with fresh ingredients. The free wifi was surprisingly fast which allowed us to upload some vacation pictures while enjoying our lunch.

My husband and I had breakfast here on a recent trip to Petoskey. It's really quirky on the inside - bright and colorful with lots of different textures. The half booths (not quite sure what to call them) are a great idea but I found them too deep to sit in comfortably, and I'm average height. We both had the breakfast number 1 plate with spicy potatoes. They're not super spicy but nicely flavored. The sourdough bread was interesting. I'm not a coffee drinker so was looking for pop. They don't have mainstream pop options (no Pepsi or Coke). They had...I think a Northwoods' pop machine. The Sprite-esque drink was pretty good. We both enjoyed our food. My husband's coffee was good. It was clean. LOVE the bathroom area - so quirky. We would definitely go back. Nice staff.

The interior of Roast and Toast was a little off-putting. I see where the other reviewers commented on the cleanliness and customer service. We had take-out so we did not need to dine inside. The Chicken Club sandwich was delicious but a little heavy on the basil pesto mayo. But what I would really recommend was the Cranberry Cafe Spinach Salad. The chicken tasted like high quality, and the ingredients in the salad were fresh. We really enjoyed their salad and cappuccino.

Horrible service! Girl that took our order was not listening and was instead chatting with fellow employees, and not aware of menu items and whether or not soup was even available when ordering. Order was massed up even though it was the exact item on the menu, wrong dressing was used. Rude, unprofessional and dirty environment. Don't recommend, way better places in town.

I'm giving a 5 because I grew up on this place. Their sandwiches are great. The service is always welcoming. The coffee is good. If I was rating the pastry case this place would receive negative stars. Just avoid the pastries and you should have a good experience. It's the only shame of this place. Everything else is lovely.

Teenagers. Grunge. Dirty... And that's just the staff in this used-to-be good diner. Tonight I experienced: Horrible service, dirty floors and tables, and weirdo waitstaff that are just too cool... And by "too cool" I mean a pink mohawk, piercings, and lots of facial hair. Service was amazingly slow... 25 minutes for a sandwich. My date's sandwich was prepared wrong, but she opted to just eat it because of the confusion and slow service. There are better options for a sandwich... Julieanne's and Jimmy John's are nearby...

This place is AMAZING, their coffee is amazing, their soup is amazing, and their chicken salad sandwich is the best I ever had if you go there I recommend the chicken salad sandwich. If you are ever in petoskey I would go there. Their breakfast is really good to and they serve their regular menu in the morning to. I wish I could give them more than five stars.

I stopped here for a sandwich and soup. I was given a bowl and told to fetch the soup from the bar. They have about 5 soups available on a bar with associated toppings. I was worried it was sketchy but the soup is kept very very hot to avoid any issues. It was delicious too. I also got a roast beef sandwich. They were packed for lunch so it took about 15 minutes. It was a large sandwich and very good. The soda is not Coke or Pepsi but it was fine. I don't know what brand it was. Overall, this is a great place to get a bite to eat.
