Quintessential diner-style barbecue joint. Super secret bbq recipe, this place has been in business forever. Limited menu of beef and pork bbq on burger buns, good french fries and REAL milk shakes (made from milk and ice cream) among a few other choices. I've never had anything but the pork bbq - when I find a winner, I stick with it. Juicy, fantastically flavorful, and inexpensive: trifecta of perfection. Smallish interior with no ambiance which is how it's sposed to be.

LOVE this place! I have family in Muskegon and have been coming to US 31 since I was a child. Their pork BBQ sandwiches with the tasty vinegar relish has an amazing combination of flavors! Its definitely not your traditional pulled pork sandwich with BBQ sauce, but if you're looking to try something unique this is the place for you. My family loves this place so much, we would order extra sandwiches to take back home to Chicago, and freeze them to save for later. Side note: I also love their milkshakes.

I didn't appreciate this place until I was a teen, and love it now. Messy but worth it! I love the old "malt shop" like atmosphere.

old road side style. not much room and only a few booths. says BBQ but its nothing like you normally get. food is ok, not something I think my family will be returning for. Milkshakes were good and service was alright.

This brings me back to my childhood of growing up in Muskegon. These sandwiches are absolutely incredible. The pork or beef or mixed are great options. These sandwiches are messy, drippy goodness and I miss them terribly now being in Tucson. I wish I could have them shipped to me!!

Old Muskegon stand by. Great cabbage relish on the meat. Whenever I come to Muskegon, I have to stop by. Sometimes the buns get soggy, but usually when you get takeout, not when you eat-in.

There are reasons why some restaurants come and go and some stand the test of time. This place, established in 1939, is a testament to why some family restaurants have outlived others. The same family has run this place since the beginning and instead of trying to flow with new trends it has stayed true to its original recipes and offerings and it has paid off. It is a small place, 7 booths and 12 swivel chairs at the counter, but big on nostagia. You can sense upon walking in that this place is not trendy yet full of history. The menu is simple as are the selections. I ordered the two meat bbq of pork and ham along with fries and a bowl of chili. Fries hot and crisp. Chili is old school in that it is mildly spicy, deep brown/red no vegetables but full of beans and loose meat. A classic diner chili. I prefer some onions and cheese with it but it is very good as served. Hearty. Bbq sandwich is not your red bbq sauce type. Slow cooked in a smoker and marinated with a vinegarish seasoning. Then served on a soft bun and topped with a delicious sweet relish. Very tasty. I recommend this place for those who enjoy a throw back to stripped down diners of the past that have stayed true to their good food roots and see no reason to vary from it.

I love this place! It is quirky, different, and not your traditional BBQ place. It's been a downtown Muskegon staple for ever! When I'd walk to the mall and go past those roasts in the smoker hut. I close my eyes and swear I still smell that sweet, salty combination that makes US31 legendary!

This is a Muskegon landmark!!! There are those that say this isn't real BBQ, but must not understand that "real BBQ" is the seasoning and slow cooking of meats for hours until tender...not sloppy red sauce to cover up bad preparation. The relish/sauce is unique and adds a sweet Carolina style flavor to the sandwiches. I cook brisket, ribs, pork shoulder and almost anything else weekly on my pit in south Texas. I wouldn't ever compare the two, but US31 is definitely good BBQ. There's a reason this establishment has been in business since 1939.

It's not bbq, nothing really more to say. Had the pork sandwich. The pork was good, the problem was when they decided to put that sauce on it. It was pretty much vinegar and cabbage with a little brown sugar in it or something. I will not be back to this place ever.

BBQ 31 is a family favorite every time we visit Muskegon. We savor the tastiness of the unique type of seasoned shaved meat sandwiches. This is more similar to a southern style mustard or vinegar based sauce/ relish. Abandon any preconceived notions of BBQ and let your taste buds have a ride. As the outsider introduced to this delectable cuisine I can say it wasn't quite like anything I've had before and now I look forward to any chance for a beef and a pork sandwich! Buns are supposed to be somewhat soggy with sauce... Yum! Negative reviews seem to surround mismanaged expectations in not finding a traditional American red bbq sauce. If you're looking for something different that's a local gem then dig here!

Go for the Pork BBQ. I travel many miles to get this. Paul Buris's legend lives on!

Calling this BBQ was wrong. Very messy and not the "this is great BBQ" mess either. Waitstaff unpleasant and table had crumbs from previous guests.

I don't understand why this place says BBQ it is not BBQ what I got was a roast beef sandwich with gross yellow sauce took one bite and spit it out me and my wife left our food on the table when asked if everything was good we said no we thought it was BBQ and we were charge full price for everything not even a sorry my advice is to drive by and go to a real BBQ joint

If you are from the South, keep driving. I went in expecting BBQ, but I got a ham sanwich with some tasty sauce, but not like any sauce I've ever had. I don't know how they cook the ham, but is wasn't smoked in any way. But it was tasty. The fries were wonderful, and the service was wonderful. I'll go again, but I'll know what to expect, and it's not BBQ.

They don't take debit or credit cards. The atmosphere is old school cool. Food is defintely not what I'd describe as BBQ. The shakes are homemade and delicious. I had the pork/beef sandwich and fries. It was just all right. I'd recommend the shakes and fries.

The relish bbq sandwiches are the best on the planet. This is the one place I always go back to in Muskegon. It is an old school diner that has the original wait staff. The clientele is generally ederly because I guess they never took their kids or their kids all moved out of town. Stick to the basics, sandwiches, fries, soda. The pork is the best.

This was a surprise. We noticed the large sign and stopped....right in downtown almost. Good BBQ. Small place, maybe 6 tables/booths. We left there very pleased that we had stopped. Pork sandwiches are good. Classic feel to the place.

The large sign out front that say's "BBQ" is very misleading. There was no BBQ in this place. It's shaved boiled meats with a relish sauce on a soggy bun. Don't go here expecting brisket and pulled pork 'cause you won't find it.

Oh the old school side of the road dinner. This place just screams Muskegon. I've met people that all they know or remember from Muskegon is this place, they make it a point to always stop on their road trips, even going out of their way to visit the town just for their tasty BBQs. I've always been a fan of the pork BBQ and their fries are perfect here. Did I mention the milk shakes? Made the good ol' fashioned way. I highly recommend this place. I don't think I can give it enough praise.
