Considering Vacquero recently had a "infestation" I am even happier that I like El Maguey. They are primarily carry out, but the food is good and made well. The parking lot is a bit of a hoot, but the liquor store next door has tons of goodies, so it's worth parking a few spaces further and getting some craft beer to take home :)

I was not really impressed with El Magueys. The server was not very personable and kind of mean actually. I ordered a Chile Rellanos and it was soaked in oil. The filling was subpar and the breading was soggy The atmosphere is not very inviting or comfortable. I really can't tell why this establishment gets 5 stars from the previous reviewers. Go across town to Vaqueros or Downriver to Amigos. Seriously Yelp.... 4.5 stars for Taco Bell?

The food is ok, as far as non authentic Mexican food goes, was told I had to pay extra for chips because chips were reserved for people that get combo meals and buy a drink, I got items a la carte because their rice is not that great in the lunch combos still spent what a lunch combo costs, a general rudeness like I was bothering them just being there. Go to Detroit if you want real Mexican food

Best Mexican ever. Who would expect to find this in Monroe Michigan, but there you go. Get that made-at-the-table guacamole.

My carryout took 15 minutes which is ideal. I got the Chunky beef mexican sandwich and I was very satisfied. I felt the beef chunks could be bigger but there were enough pieces to compensate for the size. The brown gravy and amount of cheese was just like the way I get it in Mexican town. I suppose I should add, that is a compliment. Although, I had carryout, I was glad to be greeted with a smile and she was very polite telling me to, "take your time". I ALWAYS have issues at mexican restaurants requesting no onions or peppers but this place can do it. I guess the cooks can speak english. No complaints! I will be returning.

We stopped at this place very randomly and had a great meal. Both the guacamole and tres leches were really outstanding.

I give them 5-stars because I'm rating them on the food they serve!! It deserves NO LESS than 5 stars!! I will say that the parking is a bit tight. I've never sat down inside to eat. I always order take out. I suppose if you were looking for a sit down experience you might find yourself a little cramped and sometimes noisy as the place is pretty small. But let me tell ya....the food is absolutely the best Mexican food around!! hands down!!

This family-run restaurant would get 5 stars if rated only on the food, which is not the typical cookie-cutter Tex-Mex and leans toward authentic family recipes. They do a steady carry-out business along with a dozen or so booths for dining in. The Chiles Rellenos are some of the best I've eaten, and I've enjoyed Mexican meals everywhere between here and Yuma, as well as in Nogales, Juarez, Ensenada, etc. Keep in mind that there are vast regional differences in the local cuisine within Mexico. The Guacamole is made to order, and the slow-simmered pork would be delicious ladled on a flip-flop. There's no risk choosing items from the menu, as even the standard tacos, enchiladas, and quesadillas are done to perfection- no microwave-melted yellow cheese product going on here. The chicken enchiladas with green tomatillo sauce are a real winner. But, do yourself a favor and check the ever-changing specials. There you'll find gems like Barbacoa, Caldo Res, Tortas, Pozolé, Fish Tacos, Calabaza, etc. If your inclined to like Vaqueros or Amigos or Mexican Fiesta, this probably isn't the place for you, since El Maguey doesn't do the microwaved fake yellow cheese. The parking lot is a disaster since the liquor store opened next door, but it's all part of the experience. Well worth a try.

I'm so glad I found this place. Fast good and cheap! I was expecting better tamales out of this place.... I judge a Mexican restaurant by their tamales typically...I'd categorize this restaurant as "mexicant" in the tamale department...however the hot salsa makes up for this disappointment. It is totally yum. Slather it on the weak tamales and you have a 5 star rating out of me.

Went some years ago when they first opened. I did not care for the place @ all! Ordered the cheese dip & it was tasteless & clumpy. Best I remember the service was decent. Can't really remember how clean it was. First trip just done me in. I made 2 in 1, my first & last. HATE giving negative reviews to small businesses, but it is what it is.

Rude staff. High prices. Bland food. No beer. There has to be a better place to get a Mexican dinner in this town.

Real Mexican food in Michigan ! The rice was authentic. We asked for extra veggies on the food as we are touring and don't get a lot of vegetables on the road and they stacked the plates. We ordered a side of jalapeños, which came out fried, spicy and delicious and they even brought us extra spicy salsa ! The portions were huge, the value is right, and the food is delicious. The only not so authentic thing was the ground beef in the tacos. I'm used to an asada or something and this was more just like hamburger meat. No real complaints though. This food was delicious and amazing !!!

Excellent food. Not the same ol' americanized, tame mexican food. Authentic with great flavors and presentation. Very personal service. Do yourself a favor and head there often.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
