Having lived in Japan for many years, I find it really difficult to enjoy Japanese food in the States. Usually, it's been Americanized to the point that it no longer resembles the food I remembered loving overseas, and I have [sadly] become quite the food snob. However, Genij's has always stepped up to the plate [oops, pun not intended!] and served us delicious sushi and teppanyaki on every occasion. I'm more of a sushi girl than teppanyaki lover, but I managed to catch a day that they were serving Kobe beef as one of the options on the menu, so I caved and ate it. All I can say is OH MY GOD, it was amazing!! The show the chefs give is always entertaining, and if it's your birthday, they come and sing 'if you're happy and you know it clap your hands' in Japanese, which always makes me die laughing. It's a very unique experience. My favourite sushi to order when I come is usually of the nigiri variety, as the unagi, maguro, and tamago are always delicious, but my husband loves the tempura shrimp rolls. We always end up ordering way too much because we're starving, but we always find a way to finish it off [and lay down, helplessly stuffed, once we get home]. Although it's not on the actual menu anymore [if you ask for it, you can still get it], my husband and I always order the tempura udon, which honestly, is a really easy dish to screw up in all of its simplicity, by those who aren't familiar with Japanese food. Here, it's always perfect, with the soup *just* right, and the udon is never over-/under-cooked [my big pet peeves]. Ask for shichimi spice to sprinkle over the soup as you dip and eat your shrimp tempura, and enjoy! Sometimes when it's busy, I've had less than stellar experiences with some of the servers, but it has to be a nightmare to take care of everyone when the place is full! I would definitely recommend not going in the later hours of Friday/Saturday without a reservation, as you will be stuck in the narrow entranceway waiting with sad, grumbly stomachs for quite a while until you're seated.

Food is delicious, but service was deplorable. Their waitress needs to go back to training and learn how to treat customers with respect. Not sure if I will return because their service was that bad,

I really love Genji's - it's my family's go-to spot for celebrating birthdays and such, mainly because your meal is half-off on your b-day. The food is cooked on a giant grill in front of you, but the food here is much better than any Benihana or similar place I've tried. I crave the grilled/fried rice they give you and the appetizer shrimp. Be sure to load up on the pinkish mayonnaise dipping sauce and try the teriyaki chicken and/or shrimp. There is also sushi available here, but I haven't tried it.

I left impressed at this Benny Hannah type resturant. They do a great job for celebrating special occasions or just for a night out to dinner. They are very entertaining. If you're a repeat visitor, you'll probabaly see the same act twice, but what also makes it fun is if you have a couple drinks to go along with the entertainment. The green tea ice cream is awesome!

I love the food here. My wife and I go whenever we can get a night away from the kids. The food is always cooked just right. The entertainment is decent, it's about the same as any other Japanese Steakhouse. The yum-yum sauce is amazing though! The house sake is actually pretty good too for how cheap it is (I believe it was $8 a carafe). If you don't have time (or the cash) to go here, try Asian Express on Eastman Rd. It is owned by the same people and the food is basically the same. Smaller portions at a smaller price. We order take out from there quite often.

Came for a birthday lunch for a 12-year-old. Very disappointed. The "show" we were expecting by the hibachi chef never materialized - he didn't flip a single shrimp, never cracked a smile and made very few remarks to the party. Waitress said they don't do the "show" at lunch. Huh? What a ripoff. Food was OK, but grossly overpriced.

This is a very nice hibachi steakhouse with a separated off sushi bar/restaurant. The sushi side and the chefs there are excellent. A good selection of proteins and a lot of apps/sides. If you sit up at the bar itself, the chefs are very friendly and, I can't guarantee this, but I think your portions might be a little bit larger ;) The hibachi side is fun, the food off the grill is excellent. Chefs are personable and witty. I recommend the scallops. They have always come out nicely browned for me. You also have access to the full sushi menu for appetizers or other accompaniments. Server performance on the sushi side can be a bit wonky. On more than one occasion my party has had to wait to sit during lunch service while there were clearly a number of open tables appropriate to our group. I asked the hostess about it once and she indicated they did not want to overwhelm the servers. Since there are only 8 tables on that side I am not sure I understand that, but it seems to be policy and I have seen it with more than one hostess. All in all this is a great restaurant to have in the Midland area, which can often seem like franchise city.

Genjis, the place to go for your birthday... unfortunately that is all (since your meal is half priced). Unfortunately, this place peaked in its first year of opening and the allure has slowly faded along with the awnings outside of the facility. Having a master chef prepare food in front of you is a great experience. However, it's a one and done deal and you end up with the same experience each time. This is expected of the food but not the allure. An altered process would be great to make it more unexpected. The prices continue to rise, which is expected, however it's the same items, the same service, and the same average experience each time. Hopefully things improve for Genji's as it was definitely a 5 star for the first visit. Now it is just more of the same. I usually order the chicken or steak. Shrimp is the usual item that accompanies the meal. The chicken tends to be overcooked and the shrimp is the same. The yum yum sauce is always good, but that's about the peak these days.

Your atmosphere sucks, you ripped off Benihana's menu and tricks, plus I don't think I've ever made an reservation that was on time. Most often I'm stuck in your cramped waiting room with 20 other people waiting to be seated. Most of them also made a reservation that was late. Food is okay, but nothing you can't get anywhere else. I've been forced to eat here many times because of dumb birthday parties. I can't think of a time that I was impressed with anything this place has to offer. 2 stars, 2 thumbs down, and I'm the person who has grown a beard since I've been here, is my ranting of this place.

Went on a Sunday with wife and two kids. The place was very busy with only one chef. Overheard the Maitre'd complain that more people were coming in. My wife had a glass of wine I had a glass of beer and the two kids had a glass of juice each. The chef finally made it to our table and was a very friendly & cheerful man especially with the kids. I had hibachi steak my wife had hibachi shrimp in the kids split a hibachi shrimp, and an order of california rolls. We had no other drinks other than water. The food was incredibly salty and the bill came out to $130.00. As other's have mentioned, the server's need hospitality training. They act as if they don't want to be there. Because of the Chef's fun interaction with the kids we had a good time anyway

It may be overpriced, but i love this place so much!!! Best sushi in town, awesome hibachi style food, cool selection of Japanese beers and sake! The wait is never too long, even even really busy, but I'd suggest making a reservation. Awesome food tho. I'll come back again and again and again...

I'm not the hugest of fans when it comes to hibachi meals, but Genji does a good job at it. The "show" element of the hibachi is less than amazing, but the guys are nice and make decent conversation. They certainly make up for it by making good-tasting food. I've been to Genji's several times already, and each time, the food is consistent. Large portions, and decent prices, everybody will find something they like. This time we went with their hibachi ribeye steak and shrimp ($17.95 early bird special, which runs from 4:30pm-5:30pm; their first hour of dinner service), and a dragon roll ($14.95). Sushi roll came with 8 pieces, so good portion, but still a bit high in price in my books. It was crafted well, and not over saucy, but it wasn't worth the $14.95 price tag. The hibachi, on the other hand, was a good choice. Known for big portions, Husband and I split one portion. If you mention to them that you are splitting hibachi meal, they will charge you a $7.95 extra. Not a bad deal. Our hibachi chef was nice and comical, and cooked our food well. We specified our steak to be done medium rare and it was moist and not rubbery. The shrimp was plentiful at 8 pieces for each of us, and a huge amount of fried rice (probably equivalent to 1 1/2 cups of fried rice). The vegetables were fresh carrots, zucchini, portobella mushrooms, onions, and some broccoli. All this made me full very quickly, so we had leftovers. The ice cream was good, as I had the sherbet, and Husband had the green tea. The adzuki red bean looked awful (it was purple, not red!) but we were happy with our choices. I'd even say that their sherbet finished off the meal with a tart and refreshing note. Alcohol was priced at $6.25 per bottle for a Sapporo and Asahi, which Husband and his friend happily indulged in. Everybody was happy, and we had a great time. Our waitress was extremely hardworking and hospitable. Probably one of the hardest working waitresses I've seen in a long time. Good choice for hibachi in the Midland area, and if you find yourself in Saginaw, they have another location there too. I'll be back!

This was always a go-to restaurant when I lived in Midland. It was fun getting groups of people together and going out for a hibachi night. Or, sit on the sushi bar side for a nice date night. And, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how good the sushi was (I have a little street credit since I've also had sushi in Japan). As some of the other reviews mentioned, when you get the hibachi, the yum yum sauce is a must!! It's a creamy sauce and coming from someone who hates sour cream, mayonnaise, alfredo sauce, etc., you must try this stuff!! The experience is really made if you get a good chef who is in the mood to have some fun. Once when I took my parents, the guy made the fried rice into a heart and then used his spatula to make it beat and told my mom that he loved her. LOVE IT! If you're in the area, I'd suggest you give it a shot!

The food is good, I can see why this place has good reviews. Although I will say that the service is a bit iffy, very few smiles and the chefs don't put on dazzling shows like you'd expect hibachi masters to. But overall a great choice for a family meal.

While not on the level of Benihana, if you are looking for teppan/hibachi cooking Genji's offers good food and a fun atmosphere (no instant photo like they have at Benihana though). SHOW: Our chef flipped bowls, caught food in his hat, and generally put on a good show. What was missing, however, was the onion volcano and fried rice beating heart. FOOD: I wondered why I was only given a fork. Where are the chopsticks? * Onion soup - This is good, simple comfort food. Not as rich as miso. Rather, just light onion broth. Good stuff. * Salad - Iceberg lettuce that was completely overdressed but still refreshing. * Shrimp - Even if you don't order shrimp as part of your main course, you still get some shrimp as an appetizer. These were cooked nicely and very succulent and moist. * Chicken - The chicken is chopped up pretty small and mine was probably a tad overcooked. The sauce was good though. * Filet - The filet was cooked right on the money (medium rare as requested). * Veggies - I had a nice mix of veggies and they weren't overcooked. * Fried rice - I was a bit disappointed that the rice came with veggies already in it, so the chef didn't have to chop the veggies for the rice. Instead he just had to fry it up with butter and soy sauce. Decent but I've had much better. * Dessert - I opted for the rainbow sherbet, which lived up to expectations but AC and CB raved about the green tea ice cream.

Beautiful entrance complete with babbling brook and ornate iron fence. Weird location - glad the product's not fresh-caught from the local river ;) Food is pretty good. The scallops are amazing...the chicken is not. I don't like their veggies - they feel old and frozen, not fresh, and I got about 2 mushrooms in my whole serving :P Skip the broth and ask for miso soup instead. They've just added red bean ice cream and it's delish!

Surprisingly enough, the menu includes a vegetarian sushi rolls section (6 varieties), and there are a couple of vegetarian appetizers (tempura; edamame; seaweed salad). The one grill entree is basically vegetables. Vegetable gyoza are also available; they include TVP but are vegetarian (they let me read the ingredients on the bag when I asked, so yes, they buy them frozen). The sushi rolls were fairly tasty (tried the plum/mint and some variation on the avocado roll). The vegetable tempura was unimpressive; almost no batter, so it was basically just eating oily vegetables, and the acorn squash was undercooked to the point that I really wished I had a knife. The amount of rice served with dinner is just astonishing; the chef dumped a bowl of rice that would have served six onto the grill, adding vegetables and seasoning (mostly salt). I was just having sushi, but there was plenty of rice for me too without anyone feeling slighted. Dinner comes with soup and salad; the waitress knew what kind of stock each was made with (the miso soup is made with fish stock; no vegetarian soup option). The salad is an uninspiring iceberg lettuce; the carrot/ginger dressing sounded interesting but wasn't really. Wish I'd known about the green tea and red bean ice cream; I'll leave room for them next time the group I'm with comes back.

HUGE fan of Genji's. Both locations are awesome. This is the smaller of the two...This one is one huge room...The Saginaw location has a seperate private dining section instead of being divided, as well as several rooms with hibachi. It feels like this location is a bit more open, but still great. The filet mignon is to die for, the teriyaki chicken is great, the yum yum sauce is so addicting you could almost inject it into your veins...The guys that grill at the table always have great character and do some really neat tricks. The sushi list is endless. The drinks are divine. I've never had an unpleasant experience!! Be sure to bring your money because it's a bit pricey, but worth it.

Genji's is one of my favorite places in Midland. Beautiful atmosphere, excellent food, and the chef is very entertaining. You have two options - the sushi bar, or sitting in the main dining room next to the grill. If you're a party of 2, generally what happens is they seat you at the grill with other parties to get a full table. You can also choose to sit at the sushi bar where it's more intimate. Either way, you can order from either menu. Personally, I enjoy the main dining area to experience full entertainment. Plentiful parking, and it's located right across from the Dow Michigan operations plant.

This would not be my first choice for sushi(I would prefer ann arbor or detroit suburb) but is a convenient place considering it is only a few miles from my house. For a small town it is decent. I recommend you come here after Thursday as word is thats when the fresh fish arrives.

this is the only benihana type restaurant in Midland. it's somewhat expensive for what it is, but it's fun for family. first come soup. i usually get miso soup and it tastes like it is from a dry packet, as the seaweed seemed wrinkle. salad is usually cold and crispy which i like. then comes shrimp appetizer, vegetables, meat, and fried rice. they are cooked reasonably well like every other cook-in-front-of-you places. finally there is ice-cream. Genji also serves sushi. i recommend calling ahead for reservation on friday and weekends as their sushi tables fill fast. Not that they have five star sushi, but this is the only place you get decent sushi in Midland. Genji has good tempura and gyoza dumplings. as mentioned above, miso soup is most likely from dry packets but acceptable. sushi roll is good and standard. Note: if you see asian women making sushi, be careful about the spicy rolls as they can be very spicy. I do not recommend their scallop sashimi. I am a big fan of fresh and sweet scallop sashimi, but genji's scallop sashimi is tiny (split one scallop in two halves) and they did not thaw the scallop well before serving. If you want sushi in the tri-city area, there is a very good sushi place in bay city (fusion one cafe). Fusion one cafe has home made miso soup and good asian salad, both of which comes with their all-you-can-eat sushi meal. plus home made banana foster is really good.

  • Rob K.

The food at Genji is decent but not excellent. Some of the rolls are surprisingly good and I'd rate this place higher except for the service. The staff tends to be unattentive and expect lunch to take at least 90 minutes if you are ordering sushi. If they did a better job focusing on customer service I would go here more often. I'd give them 3 1/2 to 4 stars if it wasn't for the poor service.
