From the reviews Sweet Water Cafe appeared to sound too expensive and had comments about slow service, etc. But, we ended up having breakfast there and I'm so glad we did! The menu has all sorts of great choices whether you love meat, are vegan or vegetarian. I had an omelette that was just absolutely out of this world. Fresh bread used for the toast and obviously homemade strawberry jam. The coffee took forever (did they have to grind by hand?) but other than that it was one of the best meals I've eaten and definitely the best in the UP so far!

What a breakfast! I planned to do a 'plain Jane' typical thing but the fab waitress recommended huevos rancheros and hit a home run. I try to limit my carbs but on tasting the jam, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!: Strawberry as good as Mom's. Coffee was rich and kept full by a pro. Only the walk up Sugar Loaf kept me from a day filled with guilt. Wish we were around for dinner.

I ate the huevos rancheros for breakfast today. The food is good, coffee was tasty. A little pricey but I was not disappointed. The sausage side was okay but a little pricey at $4.95.

This Memorial Day, my friend and I went on a road trip to see what the UP had to offer. We heard tell of delicious smoked fish (fresh from the waters of lake superior!) and other yummy treats. Boy were we surprised to find that most of the food on the UP is either disgusting fried crap (imagine a buffet full of fried "fresh" fish that's been sitting out for a few too many hrs) or pasties (which, by the way, are delicious!). Nothing local, nothing fresh, corn fed factory farmed beef, you get the idea. Well the Sweet Water Cafe in Marquette is a great exception to this rule. Lots of organic veggies, lots of locally sourced, naturally raised meats, even quinoa! And they had the smoked whitefish I'd been looking forward to but hadn't gotten (apparently everything in the UP is closed Memorial Day weekend... not a big tourist weekend for them I guess). We came here for dinner and for breakfast the next day. Everything was delicious (hummus plate, quinoa salad, garden salad, whitefish sandwich, burger, eggs & sausage, and yogurt parfait), the service was friendly, even the wine list was pretty good. Very, very impressed overall. Couldn't recommend it enough!

I'd love to give them 4 stars, and I'd also love to give them 2. The food is really good, and I can't say I've ever really had a bad dish here. It is vegetarian-friendly, which can be hard to come by in smaller towns.... But riddle me this.... I dare you to look at the price of their orange juice before ordering it, assuming it's going to be under 2 dollars. It is quite pricey, and while I think there's a genuine time and place for upscale, it's really hard to get away with it in Marquette. Though they seem to be doing well enough without me being a regular so I guess not all's lost.

Whenever I'm in Marquette, I always plan at least one trip to Sweet Water Cafe for a leisurely (and organic!) breakfast. The waitstaff is always on their toes and they never rush you, in case you're in conversation with a friend you haven't seen in over a year! I've either ordered the basic breakfast made with local Hillshire Farms eggs or the french toast served with U.P. maple syrup. Occasionally, they will have for the special of the day, pancakes, which are wonderful also.

When we were visiting Marquette recently, we stopped into the Sweet Water Cafe for a Sunday brunch. Since I have most recently lived in places like Chicago and Pittsburgh, when I think "Sunday Brunch" I think "long lines of people waiting to get in." Not so. We were seated immediately at about 10 am on a Sunday, with a party of 8. Wow. That is not likely to happen anywhere else. Probably happened here because Marquette is teeny. So. Everything sounded tasty, very hard to decide - I started with a chai latte which was hot and foamy, then progressed to the "Green Eggs and Ham." I asked to swap out the ham for some bacon (never really liked ham, but always loved BACON. who doesn't?) and got their three-seed bread (which I think is baked in house) that was tasty. The bacon was crisp, which I liked, but I have to say I was not that wowed by the green eggs (scrambled with pesto). I didn't really care for the pesto that much. The eggs were well cooked, but the pesto....really rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe too garlicky? I'm confused, because I love pesto, but this dish did not taste appealing. Could've been just a one-time fluke, or there could be something in the way they make the pesto, but.... meh. I'll still give it 3 stars because it's a cute place where you can get seated fast, really friendly servers, and they make as much fresh food as they can. And my dining companions liked their dishes. I'd go back and order something else, but I have a mind to stay away from those "Green eggs."

Servers were really nice. I got a soup and sandwich. You can tell they use quality ingredients. The whitefish chowder was a little bland but that was my only complaint.

For being in Northern Michigan, this place is a real gem! This is my favorite restaurant to go to when I am in Northern Michigan. Not only do vegetarian and vegan food options abound on the menu, but there are also many food items grown locally by Marquette farmers! I highly recommend sampling the juice bar, which features some of my favorites like carrot-apple and great freshly squeezed orange juice. Add a shot of locally produced Michigan vodka and you've got one stellar screw driver! Or, mix Kukicha tea from Eden Organics (A Michigan owned company) with fresh apple juice for a warm fall treat. Although Sweet Water is well recognized as a northern vegetarian haven, there are also several menu options that feature meat and cheese for friends (or in my case family) that prefer the S.A.D. diet (standard american diet).

    (5)
  • Emily B.

One star for friendly staff. Another star for offering locally sourced foods, with plenty of special-diet options. Beyond that: Overpriced and underwhelming. By far the most disappointing meal (especially considering how much it cost) that I had in an entire week of eating out while on vacation in the U.P.

Fresh squeezed orange juice and homemade jelly! Was traveling through Marquette and stumbled on this restaurant. Friendly wait staff...what a great find!

The fact that they offer, and are aware of food allergies, and gluten intolerance in specific is a big plus for me. The food is consistently... mediocre. It's a comfortable atmosphere, I suppose. Service is generally slow.

This place was so good about 10+ years ago. The service staff is hands down, the slowest and most unprofessional I've experienced anywhere, in years. Their menu has a decent amount to offer, including gourmet coffee drinks and alcohol, but the amount of time it takes between ordering them and actually getting them served is unbelievably slow. Twenty minutes to get a cappuccino and mimosa.....seriously! Another 15 minutes for the server to present us with check after we asked at least twice?!?!? My most recent visit, after all was said and done, took just over 2 hours for breakfast. If you have a lot of patience, try this place. I guess I could suggest this place to vegetarians who have a lot of time on their hands or retirees who enjoy spending 3 hours drinking coffee and picking at their breakfasts. The bright side--if I were to rate the food alone, 3 or even 4 stars would be appropriate. While the menu seems much more limited that it once was, all the dishes I have ordered at the Sweet Water have been presented well and were flavorful. Additionally, the restaurant does provide its guests with a clean, well-decorated atmosphere.

Every year we come to Sweetwater for breakfast the day after the Ore to Shore bike race, and every year it is absolutely fabulous. New to me menu item in the breakfast sandwich, and it was so good I ordered another before I was halfway thru the first. Outstanding service as usual too.

We stopped in while on a day trip from houghton, mostly because of the reviews. We wanted drinks and sweets to take for our trip back, and the waitstaff was very helpful to that end. Two out of two stars for service. One out of three for food. The chai was more like a weakly flavored water, hardly any spice flavor and only slightly sweet. The coconut cheese cake was okay, but sour for my taste, and the ganache was too bitter (my taste in ganache tends toward the dark, but this was just bitter). The almond chew cookies were pretty great. I probably won't be stopping here again.

    (3)
  • Josh B.

Overpriced. Terrible service. Mediocre food that's either bland or over-seasoned (all-too-common in Marquette). If you go there, set aside a few hours, as getting drinks takes about one and then the food takes almost another. The hours are always changing with the seasons. Save yourself the trouble and practice cooking at home - I bet you'll accidentally make something better than this, for way less. The staff are really friendly, though.

Super laid-back hippie cafe/diner. Had lunch on a family trip -- my mom grew up in Marquette. Tuscan potatooes. Pesto veggie sandwich. Whitefish salad sandwich. Desserts and soups are awesome.

Yummy food -- slow service. Only go here if you are patient and have a lot of time on your hands.

Casual cafe with a great food/drink menu. I love their breakfast! You can see several different cultural influence in their menu. Their food is also wholesome and healthy; they make the baked goods from scratch. You can also enjoy artwork on the wall; they select local (including students) and international artists, and change it around regularly.

  • Nick R.

I go for breakfast here every time I'm in Marquette. I like it because it is not a typical greasy spoon breakfast cafe. I always get an omelet with toast (their bread is very good). I recommend this combination plus splitting a side order of breakfast potatoes. Their eggs and meat are from local farms.

We found this restaurant on Yelp and loved it. We were in town for a ski race and were not familiar with any restaurants in Marquette. What a nice surprise. Many of the items are organic and locally produced. I had the huevos rancheros and liked it a lot. It was served with black beans and brown rice. We went back again for breakfast the next day and i had a spinach and feta omelet which was also very good. The orange juice appeared to be fresh squeezed and was delicious. My husband had the basic breakfast both days and liked it as well. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Yum!

So this place has been around since the last time I was in Marquette maybe even longer. At least 6 years...but in all the time this place has been in Marquette I had never eaten there, being a native of Marquette I figured I would give it a try, that and considering my oldest brother is vegan and this is one of the few places in Marquette where he feels comfortable eating. I will say this. The food was excellent probably some of the better food I have tasted in Marquette in a while. The reason this place got two stars. SERVICE sucked. I have eaten all over the country and to think that some of the worst service I have ever experienced would come form my home town is disappointing. To start...Sunday morning 20 minute wait, when there where open tables in plain site...did not make sense. Our waitress, was horrible. She actually took our silverware and gave it to the table next to us because they were at their table first. No service at all...food not coming out at the same time. Not stopping by our table to check on our coffee's and tea. My dad about lost it...he has no patience he is almost 80 and managed some of the largest restaurants there are in NY city back in his heyday, so to keep him from draggin me and my brother out of there was a chore in itself. Different glasses because there kitchen was behind. This place management obviously needs an overhaul cause right now it sucks...they had waitresses running all over the place instead of obviously having sections. And why not have a busboy clearing the tables, instead of having a waitress running all over doing it, when they should be taking care of customers... I will give this place another chance when I come back in the summer. But I hope between now and then they get there act together.

Featuring locally sourced food, Sweet Water is a must stop for anyone visiting Marquette. I appreciated the entirely gluten free menu available just for the asking. I loved learning about the local farmers from the menu -- Seeds and Spores made the sausage, etc. The coffee also passed my test. Add a little maple cream and va-va-voom. A solidly good place to while away the morning hours.

What a great find. The service was great, and the food was excellent! Having fresh homemade strwberry jelly on the table was a treat.

I think of this as a cute breakfast joint with health conscious hipster food, although I think they serve lunch/dinner as well. My friends describe this as the place where the professors and teachers go. Academia eats, if you will. I love their arame/sea vegetable pasta salad - I always get a pint and eat it on my ride home. Yum!

One of my favorite local haunts. Boasting organic locally grown food, stop by the Sweet Water to get a great slow food meal. Staff is outstanding and their menu is extensive and fairly inexpensive. There's a little something for everyone.

My favorite Marquette restaurant. Great for vegetarians/vegans, but they serve meat and from what I've heard it's good. Prices reflect the fact that their ingredients are fresh and many are organic/fair trade. The bread is wonderful. The coffee is fantastic and refills are prompt and unlimited. I've heard there are some items served that aren't on the menu, and since most things served here are made here (or locally) you should feel free to ask if there's something you're in the mood for. Not a dirt-cheap date but not ridiculous either (all Marquette restaurants are expensive, in my opinion!), and in this case you really do get what you pay for. Plus, despite having great choices and a nice setting, the staff is still friendly and unpretentious (my grandparents recommended it to me). I've lived all over the country and this is one of my favorite places to eat, definitely my favorite in Marquette.

YUM! This place is DELICIOUS! We sat at our table pouring over the menu for several minutes before making a decision, as the menu is chock full of options. We went with the Orbit Pesto sandwich and the Classic Trio and both were fresh and flavorful. The staff was friendly and helpful in making recommendations. A great spot in Marquette, if you're looking for food from scratch that is not only healthy but also delicious.

Pleasant decor and friendly staff. I had the turkey and Swiss while my wife was delighted by the pesto grilled cheese. Both were well thought out, though presentation could have been better and pricing is a bit high for what you get. The cost though is offset I presume by the homemade quality in most ingredients and the healthy benefits of this over a chain. I was slightly disappointed in the guacamole- though I must say this through a bias as being from New Mexico guacamole is completely different than up here. However I do like the zest brought through with use of fresh cilantro. All in all, I must say I was pleased, not wow'd, but a solid eatery for the healthier appetite who like supporting local businesses.

Can't beat fresh, local food. Sweetwater utilizes local food suppliers in their kitchen on the daily - for example, the omelettes all use three local eggs from free range chickens. Food can take 20 minutes to arrive at your table, but man is it good! Can't go wrong with a make your own omelette creation - I went for white cheddar, onion, mushroom, and black beans. For your side of toast, go with Russian Rye - a dark, molasses bread I could eat by the loaf! Other dishes of note: jazzed up Caesar salad, whitefish cakes, and the pesto grilled cheese (seriously one of the best I've had in my life). Sweetwater stays busy so if you're coming in with a larger group (4+ people) expect a wait.

Great local diner. Home made breads & jam. Just the type of place I look for when I travel, to eat a leisurely breakfast while checking my emails. Food quality was excellent, server started a bit slow at the start but made up for it with almost over attentiveness the second half. I had a three egg omelet with zucchini and bacon (they don't have ham) and asked for it to be cooked dry. Well executed. Homemade Oatmeal wheat bread with strawberry jam accompanied it and I added a side of grilled turkey for my big muscles :)

I have beef with Sweet Water Cafe. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY PESTO EGGS AND HAM! Don't you know that even if it has been over 10 years since I have had breakfast at your restaurant, I still expect everything to be the same? Okay, I am laughing right now. Seriously, what happened though? I loved that dish! I took 1 star away because you have stopped serving it. Sweet Water, you helped me discover pesto, and I love you for it! Sentiment set aside, I just enjoy having breakfast here. The staff is friendly, and the food is excellent. There isn't anything fancy about the menu. They just take traditional diner dishes and redefine the flavors with maybe some salsa -- or what at one time was pesto. I believe they also cater to vegetarians, but I am a meat eater and I never pay attention to what they offer in this department. My mornings are not complete until I have had coffee and massive amounts of protein. Sweet Water has definitely made their dining space relaxing. I love to come here with friends for breakfast and usually it's early enough that we can hear each other perfectly, with little background noise. I never feel pressured to get up and leave once I have finished my meal. As a result, I enjoy browsing the local products they sell at the register. Last time I got 3 bottles of Ray's Polish Fire hot sauce. I'm actually sad I didn't get a chance to stop by during my recent visit to the U.P. You can't go wrong choosing Sweet Water. A must visit for Marquette.

I have eaten here a few times. Mostly when I was forced (girlfriend's art was up on display for a month) or when I was trying impress a girl. It always takes a long time. The food is horribly overpriced. If you know anything about cooking, you should detour to the grocery store and then back to your house the next time you head towards this joint.

Good but not great. Went for breakfast. Huevas Rancheros were ok, not even hot when arrived. Someone had omelette with toast. Never offered jam. I ordered 'special' mint lemonade. It had l mint leaf!! Really, how much does mint cost?? No flavor for $3.50. There are better breakfast places in Marquette.

Tried this place after reading many good reviews. I love to find healthy and organic restaurants and Sweet Water fit the bill! Despite waiting 45 minutes for my sandwich, it was very tasty. The house made hummus was delicious and I like that they serve veggies rather than chips with it. The service wasn't great and they were out of a few menu items, but overall it wasn't a bad experience and I'd like to go back!

Probably one the best places I've had breakfast at. I had the Rise and Shine Sandwich. It was amazing. There are a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. Very friendly service. Very laid back environment. Definitely will come back when we come back to Marquette.

This place is amazing- amazing food (much locally sourced), kind and very attentive staff. Neil was our server and he was very knowledgeable about the menu and the local food movement plus a ray of sunshine. We are thinking of changing our travel itinerary so we may eat there again!

Cute place with creative options. I had the Mackinac Reuben and it was just okay. The water on my plate from the carrot chips made the bottom bread really soggy. Speaking of the carrot chips...nice idea but...no. I need a couple potato chips with my sandwich. I'm on vacation--give me the delicious, unhealthful accompaniment! My kids had the pesto grilled cheese, and it was delicious. Next time we will try breakfast.

OMG food was phenomenal. It's a bit pricey but knowing we're getting organic and vegan food while on a road trip is good enough for me!! I got the sweet potatoes enchiladas and my boyfriend got the veggie sandwich. Both were amazing and solid portions. Service was great as well. We highly recommend this place!

We discovered this place last time we came through Marquette on vacation. We are always looking for a great breakfast spot, and this fit the bill. Service is nice, many vegan/vegetarian options, homemade breads, fresh squeezed orange juice (pricey, but worth it!). They usually have a breakfast specials and fresh items locally sourced (I had fresh raspberries, along w other fresh fruit, on my yoghurt parfait). We usually buy a loaf or two of their bread to take w us on our journeys as well. I recommend this place for a leisurely breakfast anytime, I just wish we lived closer so we could eat there more often. Also I'd love to try them for lunch/dinner if we are in the area.

Really cute atmosphere. Nice sit down, full service restaurant! We decided on the lunch special for breakfast so don't think this place is just for breakfast. They have a full menu! They actually have a full bar so order up cocktails and mimosas! Ask for Amanda. She's a super sweet & attentive server.

This place was a great find. We were in Marquette 2 days. The first day we went there for breakfast and went back for breakfast again the next day. Clearly homemade food with great ingredients. We have been three times & every single time they spend way too much time telling us what they don't have. The worst is their bakery. They are always out of things. I guess you have to come on Thursdays when that bake to get anything!

Gwt the French toast. Especially in the three seed bread. The huevos rancheros are also delicious. The sausage is really good, but not quite as good as the bacon.

Simply amazing! For such a small town with few choices for dining this place is excellent. The food is very flavorful & consistently good. The place is quaint & very clean. I'm traveling on business & make it a point to eat here each time I come. It's a healthy option and good quality food. Too bad they're only open for breakfast & lunch when I've been here.

This place is a bit on the expensive side for breakfast, but the food was delicious. A lot if the food is local and The syrup is all natural maple syrup. There is fresh jam on the table that was delicious as well.

Great breakfast & was so excited to see real, homemade food, that was healthy & flavorful on an otherwise bland & fried vacation. Ramps outside & in accommodated our double stroller though the double doors were a bit tricky. Love that they source local ingredients, have their own garden & have ditched pepsi products in place of a soda line sweetened with cane syrup instead of HFC.

While the hipster factor here is high, the food justifies it. I ordered the basic breakfast with the Tuscan potatoes and sourdough toast. The spuds were great as was the sourdough, actually the sourdough was worth the visit alone especially smeared with the homemade strawberry preserves on the table. Bacon was decent but slices were very small and thin. All their food is organic and for the most part locally sourced. A must stop for breakfast or brunch.

Exceptional local food. The menu has the normal staples, but they also have some great eclectic plates. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. It is extremely kid friendly with a supply of toys to keep the wild beast tame.

Local, organic, and fresh food makes Sweet Water stand out. I've dine at Sweet Water on several occasions for breakfast and it was very good each time. I especially like the omelet's - but they can get a bit pricey if you want more than two items in your omelet. I suppose this is the cost you pay to have your food made with local, organic, and fresh foods - so I won't complain too much about that. The coffee is super fantastic as well as the service. The waitresses are really sweet and they work really hard because it is always PACKED whenever I go. I'll continue to come here.

What a great find on our first visit to Marquette. We had the best whitefish ever in our life. We ordered two different styles and were so happy with our choice. The fish tasted fresh, the vegetables and potatoes were outstanding in quality and taste. We also tried ther homemade soup - excellent!!! Normally we would have paid after that, but they had some good looking desserts that we ordered. The chocolate cake was amazing and the creme brulee even more. Like Deana B. wrote in their review: "Just awesome, local and organic"!!! And I am writing ORGANIC in capital letters!

Four of us went to the Sweetwater for dinner. What a great experience. We ordered from all corners of the menu and everyone loved what they got. These folks put a great spin on classics using interesting extra ingredients that will surprise and delight your palette. Plus they have lots of great organic and all natural ingredients. Grab some friends and stop in.

We stopped in for brunch when we were visiting friends in Marquette. I had a ridiculously good omelette. Perfectly cooked (fluffy, thoroughly cooked and not tasting like it was frying in a pile of old grease) and loaded with fresh local veggies. I enjoyed that the greens, instead of just a few spare leaves, were completely encasing the outside of my omelette. Omelettes are my go-to brunch food and I dare say this one ranked pretty high in my 20+ years of egg consumption. It did seem a tad expensive for a U.P. restaurant, but it was certainly welcome for offering local, organic and interesting takes on standard breakfast-y/ brunch fare. And a nice deviation from a lot of the much heartier, possibly less heart-healthier fare prevalent in the U.P. ( no disrespect, yoopers! Still love ya and your beautiful peninsula!) The only thing I didn't really care for was the coffee, which tasted a bit burnt/bitter. Overall, a decent option for more 'foodie' types.

Delicious, warm and welcoming, pricey little vegan and locavore spot here in the Queen City of The North. I stopped recently for breakfast and I have had both breakfast and lunch here numerous times. The menu is interesting and varied, and will please the organic, sustainable crowd. There is hardly anything on the menu that wasn't "made from scratch" or locally, including the hot sauce and the maple syrup. I didn't make it to the john, but I suspect they roll their own T.P.! Back to breakfast. I had an omelet special, primarily spinach and feta, but filled with other veggies and mushrooms, and infused with a special Thai sauces. One of the best things about the place is the Asian fusion influences and unique vegetables and sauces. The omelet itself was of the rubbery variety (I am spoiled by the fluffy omelets of sweet home Chicago.) I was a bit disappointed that potatoes did not accompany a $9.00 omelet. But when I ordered the curried pan fried ones, they arrived in an instant. I love that they have 3-4 choices of different flavored fried spuds. To sum up: creative and tasty choices with very genuinely friendly and gracious service. A true find in a town with limited breakfast offerings. Great location. Bright and sunny rooms. Exceptional fresh baked bread and other bakery goods. Just economize in other ways so you can afford to eat here. Breakfast might run you $15-17.00 per person.

Just had a very delicious lunch here. After several days touring the UP it was wonderful to have a fresh organic meal. Had the SSS with yummy onion soup that was not too salty, just enough salad with Thai garlic dressing, and. 11/2 sandwich on very good bread. I highly recommend this place when passing through Marquette.

We visited this place few days back while we were going through marquett in our vacation. We reached just in time for lunch(@2:55pm est). It closes at 3. We were welcomed very warmly. Our waitress was super good( damn I forgot her name). She attended us really well, even helped us choose the best from the menu. Food was very good. We both loved the food. Good experience
