Once again, we found ourselves in the Metro Detroit area with a hunger for things Mexican. Yes, I know, we should really head down to Mexicantown or try some of the smaller, mostly take out type joints in the Wayne, Westland, Ypsi area. But, we like a good margarita with our Mexican food and most of the aforementioned do not serve them. I read the Yelp reviews and decided there were enough positive reviews to warrant the 5pm rush hour trip from Canton to this restaurant. We checked out the menu and it certainly sounded great. In fact, my dinner guests were "ooing and ahing" over the menu on the way there. Too bad it didn't live up to the hype. The person who writes the menu descriptions for El Nibble Nook is who deserves the five star rating. The food definitely does not. I even called ahead to ask about the Margaritas - do you make them from a mix or are they made from your own recipe? I was assured they were NOT made from a mix and that we would LOVE them. Well, we did like them quite well but we didn't LOVE them. Are they above average and better than those served by the vast majority of so called Mexican restaurants out there? Absolutely. Are they "The Best Margaritas in Detroit" as touted on their website? For your sake Detroit, I hope not. As other reviewers have noted, the decor is rather kitschy but that's ok - I don't go to a restaurant for the decor. The place appeared clean enough - though I noticed a LOT of food splatters on the walls in the dining area. Not quite sure how that happens as the tables are not right next to the walls. Anyway, we began with the obligatory chips and salsa - always a good test. The chips were "OK" and the salsa was disappointing. Much too thick and very bland in taste. When I asked for some green sauce, I was told they don't have any but our waitress (who was moderately attentive throughout the dining experience) offered a spicy version of the red sauce. What she returned with was the original red sauce with some red pepper flakes and chopped jalapenos on top. That hardly qualifies as spicy salsa in a Mexican restaurant.. Next we ordered the Queso Bravo as an appetizer - touted on the menu as a new item and a combination of queso and their "world famous" chili. In reality, it tasted like Velveeta and a can of Hormel chili dumped together and microwaved until not quite hot enough. Disappointing. Equally disappointing is the fact that there is no bean dip offering as an appetizer. We also tried the guacamole. $4.99 for a tiny bowl of mediocre guac with a few chips stuck in it. We also tried the jalapeno poppers. They were ok - the best part about them being the ranch dipping sauce. We each ordered a meal. Between the three of us, we tried a spinach burrito or enchilada - can't recall which it was - chicken and beef tacos, a been and cheese tostada and something called a flouta tinga. All of it was mediocre with nothing standing out as very good let alone exceptional. The spinach (they use frozen not fresh) burrito was drowning in cheese - an all too common practice in what passes for Mexican restaurants these days. The rest of the dinners were buried in lettuce and tomato to the point you couldn't tell what was what on your plate. A cheap ploy to make you think you're getting a huge portion. Don't misunderstand, there was plenty of food but the mile high pile of lettuce and tomato make the portions look gargantuan. The fact that our meals came within just a few minutes of being ordered is never a good sign in my opinion - unless you are there for a quick lunch on limited time. In which case, the lunch menu should differ to accomodate that. The final tally for appetizers, a total of 4 margaritas and dinners for three with a $20 tip (not earned) : $107. We can definitely do better for that kind of $$. Whenever we try a new place, the question I always ask at the end of the experience is: "Would you come back?" We all agreed the answer was "maybe for a margarita - if I were within a stone's throw at the time. But not for anything else we experienced." Do yourself a favor and pay close attention to the reviews of this establishment that rated it as "average" or "just ok" - those reviews are correct.

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars here, so I rounded down for some reason. the food was excellent, but the rest of my time spent here was not that great. We came here on our bosses suggestion for one of our regular staff meetings. I've heard of this place before but never went because it's really to far out of my way. When I walked inside, it was wonderfully decorated, but something about it seemed tired. I can't explain it, but it was just tired looking. We were seated off to the side and immediately after sitting down I realized our table was wobbly. I hate this! Secondly, our waitress was pleasant, but nothing to write home about. I ended up reviewing the menu and want with the California tacos with shredded beef. It was delicious! The shells tasted home made, the refried beans were awesome and the rice was spot on! Food was an overall hit with me! I can't go more then three stars here because I'm looking at the whole picture. Food was spectacular, but that was it. I don't plan on returning unless it's under the premise of a group setting out of my control. It's not bad, it's just not my jive.

You know a restaurant is doing something right if it's been open since 1946 - which is the case for El Nibble Nook! This Mexican restaurant serves up a wide array of yummy tex-mex dishes, where you can get a quick meal for a great price. With locations in both West Bloomfield and Livonia, this is the spot I love for a weekday dinner out. As you can see from the pictures - the entrees here are massive! I love the combo meals because you get a little bit of everything and they will run you $10-$12. Chips and salsa are complimentary but appetizers are anywhere from $5-$9 and all other entrees cost $6-$27. The vibe at El Nibble Nook is simple, comfortable and homey. It's a casual restaurant where I always feel comfortable stoping in on a Tuesday night to enjoy a quick meal and a margarita.

Today was my 14th year eating here. My main purpose today was to finally do a review. Today my foodie friend am I ordered fajitas! We both found their beef filet fajitas to be under seasoned. In addition the out side of the filet was burned which left a bitter after taste. The beef also suffered from being properly cut. The portion size was adequate, and the rice was very well seasoned! The salsa was very good also! Overall I do recommend el nibble nook. Plus in this area it's the best Mexican cuisine.

Food was average. Cost 25% higher than comparable places. Service was absolutely atrocious. Server never brought drink refills despite being empty before we even ordered food. On a positive note, we complained to the manager and did get the meal comped. We still will not be going back.

I have now been to both nooks! Visited late on sunday for dinner. Was seated right away. Our waiter was beyond amazing! Very helpful, very polite. Checked in with us multiple times and made sure our food was to our liking. Food was hot when it came out especially the fried zucchini. I love their crispy tacos... doesnt matter if they are beef or chicken. And the fried ice cream was delicious with chocolate, strawberries and honey.

I wish I was bulimic so that I could purge this food from my body. Maybe it was our fault bc we got fish tacos and a chicken burrito, but regardless it was the worst meal I've ever eaten. I at least thought that the salsa, or rice and beans would be enough to fill me after I couldn't touch the incredibly salty- basically only cheese sauce- burrito, but no. The salsa tastes like Rotel that had gone bad, and then they mixed it with dry rice and incredibly dry dreams. On top of it, the service was shabby. Not impressed and will not be back.

Eh! No taste rice & bbq sauce on the chicken & beef. Tasted like a Dickeys BBQ joint. Wanted Mexican food, got American BBQ wrapped in a tortilla.

Once again they outdid themselves. Their food is good. Reasonably priced. Staff friendly. Best Mexican besides Xocomoto

About 3 years ago I moved to Michigan from Southern California. It look two years to find a restaurant that served Mexican food as good as what I experienced in California. Once my husband discovered this little gem, I was hooked! Their food and service are both fantastic! My absolute favorite item on the menu is the California Tacos... And not just because I'm from California! The shredded beef is to die for! It's seasoned with some delicious spices and the cheese on the tacos send them over the edge of amazing.

Went here late one night hoping for a local beer (not from around Detroit) and a late bite to eat. We were lucky in that no one was really around and it felt like a hole in the wall. This was some of the best Mexican food I have had to date. The vegetarian options were well chosen and well cooked. Two people, two entrees, two beers, and some of the best service we had received in a long time. I wish I could find this food elsewhere in the midwest

This is not the worst restaurant in the world, but it is still just very, very bad. The reason I give it two stars instead of one is because they were pretty accomodating of my very large party, our server was sweet and friendly, and I liked the chips and salsa. Trying to be healthy at a place like this is just not possible, though. I ordered the veggie fajitas thinking I could pretty much just eat a big plate of steamed veggies and leave the tortillas and rice. Well, the menu said steamed, but the very sad recently unfrozen veggies were swimming in a pool of inexplicably orange oil. I had to eat the rice just to soak up some of the grease. The guacamole I ordered on the side didn't taste bad or anything but it was definitely not made in house, which is kinda ridiculous for a mexican restaurant. I went with my coworkers and I asked a few of them how their meals were and they all said, "ehh it was.. ok..," and I knew they were just saying this to avoid hurting the feelings of the birthday boy who chose the restaurant. The things they ordered all looked the same, cheesy flour tortillas and other mucky substances. My one coworker said his tacos weren't very good. How do you mess up tacos? The fact that they even had the balls to bring out my dish in its depressing state tells me they hold themselves to an incredibly low standard. It looked honestly like.. unsanitary. All in all, not at all fresh food and very low quality. Mildly repulsive, but not outright heinous. Bottom line, never go here. Unless you want a cheap margarita.

El Nibble Nook is your standard Mexican restaurant. There is literally nothing exceptional about anything there (except yes, the margaritas are excelente). However, it's one of those places that is so mediocre that you can't help but go back again and again.

Stopped in for a late lunch. Service was slow and server had zero personality. Food had no flavor. We ordered a taco, beef and cheese enchilada, and California style burrito. BORING! We will not be back!

I feel like my money was wasted. The food was bad. The guacamole was flavor less and the salsa taste like ketchup. The portions did not match the price. I would've been better off going to taco bell.

Hostess was talking to someone when we came in but noticed us shortly after. She speed walked us to our table and didn't say anything after putting our menus down and promptly walked away. Stale chips and flavorless salsa. Drunk guy at the bar yapping about "Native American Indians" and then talking to the table next to us loudly about some dumb shiz. Service was not terrible, but annoying enough. I know it's a holiday weekend, but if you're nice and helpful you'll get a big tip this time of year. Our queso arrived and it was just nacho cheese that you can get at the movies. Absolutely terrible. On the menu it says it comes with chili and pico de gallo, but those were nowhere to be found. I asked the waitress if it was the appetizer queso and she said yes. Rest of the food was really bland. It's like they don't have any spices in their kitchen. Their refried beans seemed like they were straight out of a can and the "ranchero sauce" was straight up tomato sauce, most likely also out of a can. Overall, huge disappointment and won't be coming back.

First visit here. We were so excited to try something new! Unfortunately our visit was terrible. Waitress was very terrible. Our glasses sat empty our chips sat empty. Our food was delivered an all four of us were to say the least disgusted. Rice was so dry tasted like it came from a box, beans were so thick an dry tasted like they came out of a can. Not one time did a manger come over to see how everything was. Very expensive, as I am a waitress I understand things happen but for no reason should this be happening. Especially when you weren't busy at all. Very disappointing.

The food ( minus the most disgusting queso dip) was a 3.5 star! I had the California burrito - BBQ shredded beef very flavorful. Huge portion. The beans are truly their downfall - bland, thick serving, but just a decoration of brown on the plate. The coleslaw is yummy- creamy , sweet, tart. Chips nice and crunchy, but no salt. Salsa is very good, right amount of heat BUT we were given one little tiny small dish for the four of us... Guacamole - nice texture, lacked garlic/ salt/ lime / cilantro flavor- bland Queso cheese dip- the most disgusting thing ever!!! ( large for 4) for the nastiest queso I've ever had. It was thick, movie style artificial yellow thick weird tasting goopy slop...we doctored it up with salsa...barfo! Azul margarita --YUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMY! Sangria- great flavor, but not going to knock you on your arse type of sangria. I've had real Cuban / Spanish homemade sangria and this lacked some of those bold flavors. Service was a 3.5... Mixed up a couple orders, but quickly ( and without attitude) fixed the errors. There are many delicious things on the menu, so we keep coming back. The key is to avoid wasting your $$ on the items that sell this place short!

Let me just start by saying that we always go to the one in novi-commerce area and its wonderful. This one was NOT so wonderful. I have been a server for 8 eight years and im 24 years old. Me my boyfriend our daughter and his sister all decided to try the Livonia location since we live five minutes away. Heres how it went THE guy at the door who greated us was very polite and friendly. Our SERVER however was very rude did not introduce herself. One of my biggest problems was she basically ignored my 15 month old as if she weren't a paying customer and did not give me a kids menu or ask for a drink for her until i had to ASK myself. Then When i Asked for another drink menu other then margaritas she told me there wasn't one, come to find out after i settled on a strawberry margarita there was another menu on the next table that had the Spanish coffees, hummers, baileys etc. Then she failed to come back to our table after we said we only needed a minute or two it took her ten minutes just to come back. The service was very slow and the drinks were nothing special, our chip basket was completely empty and she never asked RL refill it. Then when we ordered she didn't write a single thing down and had to come back to the table to ask what my my boyfriend had and When the food came out it was terrible and cold, my boyfriend had to send his back because it wasn't correct and the cheese quesadilla i paid 8$ for was nothing at all. The chilli was good though, not to mention my sister in law had to ask for refills on her mountain dew. Then i said i wanted to order two fried ice creams to go and to bring them and the check with boxes when i said i was ready because the baby is getting crabby, she brought out the ice cream while we were eating and had no boxes or check. Then gave us the check while in the middle of drinking our margaritas as if she knew we didn't want anything else...i felt completely ignored and then suddenly rushed. It was a very AWFUL experience, i have NEVER not left a tip in my LIFE because i'm a server and i understand thing's happen but clearly in this case she was rude, lazy and didn't want to make any money. It's too bad because we're locals and will be telling others and we will never return here again. Found the name of our server its devin. She was terrible

I used to work in the area so I frequented here. But, this experience has me never wanting to eat there again, seriously. Drink there, yes. I ordered a taco salad thinking you can't go wrong. Well, I've been wrong before and this was no different. The shell wasn't just cold, it had oil sitting on it that congealed. And the meat wasn't hot as the cheese wasn't even close to melting. It looked appetizing as I attested I decided to just not eat the shell, but the first bite repelled me. The lettuce was like salad out of bag which included carrots. I asked the waitress why wasn't the meat hot and she had no response but took it back I'm sure to put it in the microwave. Needless to say, the margarita was the best thing there since it took the edge off the horrid salad. So I obliged to have another...margarita not the salad.

El pequeno Mexicano. This place is a little dark, yet quite charming in its own right. The service is friendly and swift. It's very difficult to find a good Mexican food outside of Mexican town in Detroit. However, this place meets the demand. Good chips and salsa as well. tip: If you're calling in a pick up order, make sure it is correct before going home to eat it. I did make the mistake one time and pick up somebody else's order.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and ride past the El Nibble Nook restaurant and go to Taco Bell down the street! Taco Bell's food is so much better than this place. It's dark and dingy and the bar in the middle seems to be the main focus at this place, I did read that the margaritas are very good here!! The food is just disgusting! My Son and I ordered a combination plate to share and divide ourselves but someone decided to split the taco, enchilada and tostada in half for us and service it on two plates!! Have you ever heard of that?? Usually, restaurants give you an extra plate! Don't listen to the positive reviews on here, these people must be on some heavy duty drugs! Authentic, my ASS! If you want some authentic Mexican food, you need to go to Burrito King on Beck Road in Wixom, MI. Their refried beans are the bomb!

My husband and I have come here quite a few times together and I love it. He grew up coming here and it has yet to disappoint. It small and could use some updates to their decor, but other than that - NO complaints. The food, drinks and service are excellent. Unfortunately I am VERY picky about where I can eat and El Nibble Nook passes the test.

I have lived about 1.5 miles from this place for over 4 years & I just finally got my butt in here. I love Mexican Fiesta in Deaborn Heights but really wanted to find something closer to home for some tasty eats & margaritas. Now, I had every intent of ordering a margarita but they happened to have Pearl vodka cocktails on special so I ordered one of those. It was a plum something & tasted just like a plum, I enjoyed it! The chips & salsa came & I thought the salsa was good but I prefer the watery kind that Mexican Fiesta has & they also offer mild & hot where this place seemed to have a medium only. My friend was a little bummed that there was no hot choice because she always likes it extra spicy. The food is the most important part & it was great! I had chicken enchiladas that were delicious, the cheese combo the use was perfect & it had just the right amount of spice. My friend had the tamales & they were tasty, she was very happy with what she got as was I & I was very happy to be able to swap cole slaw in place of the beans too. I will definitely be back here & I can't wait to try something else too!

Good Mexican food for a fair price. I have been eating here for about 30 years as I live 2 miles away. Love the deep fried taco titanico's, enchiladas, and drinks. This restaurant has the strongest and best tasting Margaretta's found anywhere that I have been to. I was dining here at the Nook 2 days ago and was very happy with the waitstaff. She was very prompt and friendly throughout our entire dinner experience. I have never had a bad meal here over the years. I recommend this place to my other friends as well.

I love this place-it's dear. Best... name... ever!!! Story goes that originally it was just called The Nibble Nook until the owners went to Mexico and had such a maraca-shakin' good time that they immediately changed the identity of the place upon their return. Sometimes the draw of a place isn't all about gourmet eatins, though what you get here is plentiful and the chicken chalupas, not found in every Mexican joint, are quite good. The not-so-secret word here is PERSONALITY. There are doodads, cool vintage paintings, interesting old pics of the place through the years, brick arches, tiled tables, painted bathroom doors, and much more. The staff is genuinely nice and so accommodating! They really care and aren't afraid to lend some fun to the evening. There's a certain lady I've seen there often who I believe to be an owner or manager who is such a gem-so naturally bawdy and hilarious that she needs to be onstage doing comedy for all to enjoy! Last fall as I exited "The Nook" full of tasty margaritas and a chalupa or two, I noticed a funny Halloween display at the door featuring severed body parts. Chuckling at this with my pals (ya don't find stuff like that at chains or trendy joints), a motion-activated skeleton wired to a gate suddenly chimed in with "Hey fatty!" and other faux insults and we lost it right there in the parking lot. I'm sure the cars pulling in thought we were nuts, stumbling around clutching our stomachs in laughter while desperately gasping to catch our breath. But then again, that's The Nook for ya.

A friend and I went to El Nibble Nook last night for the first time. Overall, it was a good experience. I loved the general atmosphere and decor. Our waitress (unfortunately can't recall her name) was friendly and attentive. The food, for the most part, was good (not necessarily great). We started with the complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa reviews have been mixed, but I personally enjoyed it. Being a fan of mild/medium spice swayed this, I'm sure, as I wasn't missing the hot option. The chips were good. They were nice and warm and not too greasy. Next, I had the bean tacos, which even being a tad bland, were still good. (I added a bit of salsa on top of each one, which helped.) I stuck with rice only on the side and this was the one spot I was truly disappointed! The spanish rice was not good! I found it to be way too bland and agree with another reviewer who said it tasted like rice mixed with stewed tomatoes. Finally, I know they are known for their Margaritas, but I had a Strawberry Daiquiri. Yummy and reasonably priced! I'm glad I went to El Nibble Nook and would most likely recommend it. However, being about 30 mins away myself, I'm not sure if it would be worth the drive again anytime soon, especially when there are some really good places closer by.

If you like margaritas, check the addy and hop in your vehicle, you've found the spot. They are crisp, delicious and ice-cold. The prices are great too. Just be careful, they are hella stronger than they taste, for real. The food is ok. It's not exceptional, but it is well-priced. It's a bit greasier that I would prefer. The nachos are better than most bar nachos, but don't come close to any of the places in Mexicantown. I suggest getting dinner elsewhere and dropping in for some awesome margaritas. You know you wanna....

I would say this place was okay-to-good. The food and was good, nothing exceptional. I did really enjoy my margarita. The staff was very attentive and friendly. It was very dim inside, no windows.

I was looking for a good Mexican restaurant for dinner for date night with my fiance. Upon recommendations from coworkers, i've decided to give this place a shot. As we approached the restaurant, the parking lot was filled with cars which is always a good sign. As we entered, we had to wait to get seated, but was seated in the bar area. Not to be nit picky, but the table was wobbly which was annoying. The service was slow, perhaps due to the volume they were trying to accommodate. However, I always expect good, decent service. Even if the service had been good, it did not compensate for the mediocre food. The cheese sauce we ordered along side of our chips was velvetta. I will say the chips and salsa were good. My fajitas were all right, but the rice was tasteless and very bland. My fiance ordered some enchiladas and they were okay (nothing to write home about), but her reaction to the rice was the same. Based on our level of service and the food, I would not come here again. It was not worth it for us as there are better selections that are closer with better service.

Had dinner there today, right before seeing Grown-Ups at the Livonia AMC. Its been many many moons since I steeped into this place. First "re"-impression was, I thought the place was very colorful , and I liked the twinkle lighting and the tea light on all the tables. In any event, the waitress was friendly, the places was clean, the only thing that bothered me was, there were several rooms and not too many people in the joint, but they sat us all in the same room, this to me knocks a little off the total package, but not too much in this case. Well, as with any Mexican Cantina, they start you off with chips and salsa...this is something that stands out for me, because its first thing you get and sort of the "welcome to our restaurant" you get. The chips were fresh, but not warmed (maybe Old Mexico is the only place that does that), and the salsa was ok but a little more pasty than I like. I ordered the combo plate (they had about 6 of them) I had the tostada, taco and enchilada plate, with rice and beans. It was certainly fresh and the flavor was decent. There was SO much lettuce and tomatoes that it spilled all over when I picked it up. This place has a full service bar, and can offer catering and banquet services. For me El Nibble Nook (a unique name indeed) was decent and worthy of a repeat visit, and had all the makings to be a fun group gathering kind of place.

This is a nice local place to eat if your in the area. First I would like to start by saying that the decor for this particular Restaurant is dark and gloomy, it would have been nice if they had a better lighting treatment. Now on to the service. Our waiter was very polite. We started by ordering the chicken tortilla soup which was very yummy but in my opinion was much to thick to be a soup. It had the consistency of being a dip, and to me that's not really what I was looking for in chicken tortilla soup. The house salsa was to thick and chunky for me, I would have liked to see more of the authentic salsa. For my entree I ordered the carnitas and I must say it was very good. It came with beans, a corn medley and avocado. It was a tasty dish and the service was friendly and quick. My friend ordered the enchiladas which also looked tasty but we both agreed they their Mexican rice wasn't tasty at all which I a disappointment. All in all it was an OK experience. If your in the area it's worth it to stop but I wouldn't drive a long distance for this place.

Coming from Chicago I've been spoiled with excellent "Mexican" fare. My friends and I always looked for the Mexican grocery store with a table...of course then everybody else would find out about it, and it would turn into a restaurant. El Nibble Nook is O.K....it's not great, but for microwaved food ( careful the plate is hot) it's O.K...oops already said that. Why is it that you can't find Carne Asada in Detroit?

If you passed by El Nibble Nook, you probably wouldn't even notice this little diamond in the rough. If it weren't for a handful of cars parked out front, most people would assume this restaurant was closed. However this place is anything but closed. I've been coming to this place since I was a child and compare every other Mexican Restaurant in Michigan to this place. I won't bother to compare it to other regional Mexican restaurants because the there are just to many intrinsic differences when comparing Mexican restaurants from Michigan and say, California. Recently a new Mexican Restaurant opened near our house, and we thought we had to stop by because they had a line out the door. So eventually we stopped in... And left very disappointed shortly after. The only thing good we had to talk about was when we would be able to make our way to El Nibble Nook for some "good Mexican food". Now I won't sit here and tell you that this will be as close as it get's to authentic Mexican, hell I've never been to Mexico! but the food is great. Plain and simple. And we've never had bad service. When we go here i'll always get the "Tijuana Bypass" which includes a shredded chicken chalupa, a shredded beef burrito, and a deep fried shredded beef taco. But I would say anything on the menu which has the shredded beef in it will probably be awesome. Where most restaurants just serve shredded beef, they actually season the beef, which makes it delicious! Give it a try, I promise you won't be disappointed!

My family and I have been here multiple times and it has become one of my favorite Detroit Restaurants. It provides several delicious options for me (vegetarian) and my family (carnivores). Recently though we went and they must have changed their salsa. It was more like (huge) chunks of tomatoes and tomato sauce. It was not pleasing to the palate - that's for sure. It was a little disappointing. The burritos and tacos were good though! We will go back again just to see if perhaps the bad salsa was a fluke. If you are a Mexican restaurant you HAVE to get the salsa right in my book.

For a little "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurant that is close to home, you can never go wrong with the Nook. The food is decently priced and for me you get plenty. I always leave full and I am a fat kid so that should mean something. If you are going in expecting a fancy fine dining experience, go some place else. But if you are in the mood for a great authentic Mexican meal (California Burritos make my tummy happy) in a laid back relaxing atmosphere then the Nook is for you.

Sometimes when I walk into a Mexican Restaurant in the Detroit Metro suburbs, I wonder how many drinks it's going to take to make the food palatable. Apparently, the bartender at El Nibble Nook shares my opinion, as he certainly mixes one stiff drink. The margaritas at El Nibble Nook are strong enough to take home a deadlift gold medal at the Olympics. A half liter carafe was on special for $15, which equated to about 4 tall margaritas. And since it felt like there was about $15 worth of tequila in it, this was a serious value. The food? That's another story. It's fairly average Detroit Mexican restaurant fare. The salsa was probably the best part of the meal. It was fairly chunky, and had a nice tomato-y flavor to it. The tacos were decent enough, and I applaud the powers that be at El Nibble Nook for deep frying their shells. The chicken was tender and moist, but didn't have a lot of flavor to it. A little cilantro/lime juice would have made it a very solid taco, but I understand there's a lot of people out there with cilantro issues. The beans and rice were more afterthought than side dish, and appeared to be just tossed on the plate. The refried beans were thicker than most places. And the rice wasn't quite Sahara Desert dry, but were definitely Mexico City in June dry. Overall, I'd say El Nibble Nook is a great place to grab a drink. And a second pitcher of margarita will definitely make the food more enjoyable.

The food at "The 'Nook" is decent tex-mex - all the standard fare including tacos, enchiladas, etc. In my opinion, it definitely beats all the chain options in the same price range. However, it's the margaritas that will keep you coming back. Seriously guys, they are tasty and STRONG. The 'Nook gets my vote for best marg in Metro Detroit. The kitschy, 60s-style Mexican decor is pretty great as well. In short, for a local (Americanized) Mexican place, what's not to love?

I have been here a couple times. Anyone can do chips, salsa, even a decent taco. These guys disappoint cause lack of freshness, key in Mexican food. Guacamole was either canned or old, not sure which. Little or no taste and a funny brownish green color both times. Spanish rice almost no taste. The enchilada was served in some kind of messy sauce and cheese concoction puddle. I am not a drinker so maybe they have great drinks. The thing I see that keeps this place going is its location, which is great. I also thought the place could use a good scrubbing. Too bad.

El Nibble Nook is a comfortable, friendly casual little restaurant with lots of personality and just the right amount of ambiance. The food is not quite authentic, but it doesn't really pretend to be (I like authentic in general, but I'd be disappointed if Nibble Nook changed its recipes--the food stands on its own merit). True to its name, it has several little nooks for seating small parties, as well as a medium and a large dining room (the large room can be configured to accommodate a fair-sized group, perhaps 20 or more). The lighting is kept somewhat dim, but not uncomfortably so, and the art and wall hangings are interesting enough (I wouldn't call them kitschy, though they perhaps toe the line). Overall, the atmosphere is slightly muted but still alive, which is as it should be. The Nook is family-friendly (see the "leetle peeple" section of the menu) and provides menu items for those party members who have not yet been converted to the (semi-)Mexican way. The portions range from large to gut-bursting, but sharing a meal can both alleviate future discomfort and drive down the cost of the dining experience (they'll happily split the meal for you in the kitchen and serve it on two plates if you ask). Don't let the missing star fool you--Nibble Nook is truly one of my favorite restaurants. It's missing that extra star not because it falls short, but because it doesn't reach that far. I'm not sure I'd want it to.

Good food and good service. We have been there 3 or 4 times now and the meals have always been good. We will keep going back. PS - last time I had the Carnitas - it is excellent. Best meal I've had there so far.

I went here today with my daughter, my cousin & his friend. My cousin is home from Korea & he has been here before so he chose the place. I will be honest. When I pulled up to meet him based on the outside I was not too impressed. It wasn't horrible, but it didn't look to exciting. When we got inside it was your pretty casual establishment. We were seated quiclkly & ordered amongst ourselves the deep fried tacos (carne). the deep fried tacos Cali style (spicy pulled chicken deep fried), My cousin got something a little different but I can't recall but it looked good. We got 2 liters of margaritas (AWESOME & WITH A BITE !) It was a BLAST ! Good food, good drinks, laughs....I will DEFINITELY come back ! I can't believe I just found out about this place !

Well - no one is going to rank a place named "el NIbble nook" a 5-star mexican restaurant. I get it. BUT - if you know the history of the original Nibble nook and how a couple vacationed in Mexico and then changed the entire atmosphere of their OWN restaurant back in Detroit - well, they just couldn't give up the "Nibble Nook" name... There is ample food - I have never left hungry. The Margaritas are NOT watered down. The service is good. It is full of locals - and is a very reliable and comfortable place to dine. After a long day at work and we don't week like cooking at home - where else to go and relax than your local mexican fare. I say Pooo to those who don't give credit where it is due. El NIbble Nook does not pretend to be authentic-spanish-only-speaking place, but they deliver on a yummy meal, and a full stomach to go home with.

It's certainly an interesting place, lots of "nooks" to hide in. The bar is small and I got the impression a bunch of locals frequent the bar (as we sat here for our lunch visit). They had 2 Mexican beers on tap, a lager and light ale. The light ale was light and refreshing. The food however was not much to write home about. The entree's are low priced but you didn't get much food either. I had the Frijitas Wrap and the chicken was good but everything else was standard fare. My fiance had a shredded chicken dish and I wasn't impressed by the flavor either. I guess I was looking for more spicy and some better sides to go with the lunch. You can see their full menu on their web site, elnibblenook.com 2 stars. Atmosphere is OK but I would've been more pleased with food from Taco Bell.

The name of this place cracks me up- that plus the decor are so 1965. It's the sort of place your chain-smoking step-mother with the wilting beehive would adore. It is looking a little worn around the edges, but was reasonably clean. It gets one star for the frozen margaritas, half a star for the kitcsch, half a star for a really nice hostess who was concerned about me and kept checking in with me when my dinner date was late to meet me there, and one whole star for actually having some interesting vegetarian selections. I like broccoli, so I really liked the Burro Del Jardin, though I agree with other reviewers that the food is a little on the greasy side and not terribly authentic.

I've been going to this restaurant since I was a kid. My husband and I had our first real date there. I LOVE this place, and I always will. Fantastic food, and a really great, authentic atmosphere. The prices are great, and they always have a very pleasant staff.

I adore El Nibble Nook. I've been to both the West Bloomfield and Livonia locations and find both places to be great! I love the atmosphere's and the staff is always great when I go there. And the food is AWESOME! I think I've only had one thing I didn't like there (a spinach burrito thing - a bit plain). It's a great neighborhood restaurant with quality food and a good atmosphere to hang with friends. Oh! And the Livonia location makes some delicious and strong margarita pitchers (for a great price)! No, I wouldn't travel far and wide for The Nook, but if you live within a 10-15 mile radius of one, definitely check it out!

Drinks are ok, however the food is pretty subpar. I'm pretty sure the salsa is from a can...there are definitely better options around the area for Mexican.

I should have stuck with my 1st mind and kept on driving or go to the grocery store and make my own Mexican dinner. I have been El Nibble nook 4x in 15 years and was never truly happy with m meal. But this night I wanted Mexican and it was after 9pm so my choices were limited unless I went to SW Detroit. I paid $11. for a combination that I could not wait to finish eating to get it over with . The rice tasted like uncooked tomato paste was added. the beans were exceptionally dry. the taco was good the enchilada was bland and the tinga was well just was. I had to add lots of salsa and sour cream to add flavor I am kicking my self because my favorite spot in Detroit would've been $7 and very tasteful. The only good thing was that I woke up at 4 & 5am in the morning with stomach aches & needing to go to the bathroom(if you know what I mean) Im sure it was from the food and when I got on the scale at 7am I lost 3lbs.

Utterly Average El Nibble Nook is just another, of many, Mexican restaurants to dot the map of Metro Detroit. The food is average. The place is average. Everything is completely average. There is not even a lemon in my water to spice things up. It's a fine place to go if you're in the mood for a sangria and you're in the area. However, this is not a 'destination' restaurant that one plans for ahead of time.

YUM! Pleasantly surprised! Chips & Salsa were there to practically greet us as was our server who could not have been nicer. Chips were warm and fresh the salsa had the right amount of heat and consistency. We ordered a side of guac and it was just ok...a bit too creamy for me. I strongly dislike pre made margarita mix so I was a bit hesitant to order a marg but I got the frozen pineapple one and it was really good. My husband & I split Shrimp Fajitas that were delicious but didn't come w/ refried??? So, we ordered a side ( they are veg beans, no lard...bonus) My cousin ordered a Taco Salad that was huge and she enjoyed 1/2 of it before having to call it quits. We were told not to eat here from some friends who said they had a bad visit but we went anyway and I'm glad we did.

I would label this as a "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurant, so this is definitely not your chain type Mexican restaurant. Atmosphere was ok, as was the food and drinks. Portions were nice and big, but in my opinion, there are better Mexican restaurants out there.

Kind of a hole in the wall, old mexican restaurant with great food. Gotta agree with the others when they say not to expect a fine dining experience but the old bar/mexico vibe adds to the experience at El Nibble Nook. Its a great place to go with some friends, hang out and enjoy some great food. The food, in my opinion, beats a lot of the other mexican restaurants in the area. Its just simple mexican food done right (they actually deep fry their tacos). I would highly recommend the Tacos Titanicas.

I've been going to this establishment far longer than I care to admit in years. I decided that a Friday evening meal prepared for me, was more appealing than making it myself. Service always seems to be above average here. Wait staff are attentive, yet not over bearing. I love the margaritas here, however as of late, I have been enjoying Dos Equis Lager - ON TAP !!! I wish it tasted that good in the bottle ! On this night I continued my quest for tamales like the ones I use to eat in Texas. I am accustomed to my tamales being served with a red sauce over them, made from red chiles. These tamales were made of browned shredded tenderized pork, carnitas, on the inside of the mesa. covered with chili and with melted cheese. (beans in chili is just wrong) I found them OK, but that was it. The mesa around them seemed too thick. The cheese was melted nicely on top of the tamale sitting on corn husks. The rice and frijoles were very good. The chips were a a bit 'mealy' and found them a bit stale. I've never been a fan of their salsa. The 'Nook' is gradually turning into an Americanized Mexican food restaurant. Too bad, I liked em better in years past. As another reviewer stated, if you are in the area, stop in. Their food is good, but if you really want some good and authentic Mexican or Tex Mex, keep looking.

Nice decor, good service. We had a party of 4, each having the beef chupala (three of us had the shredded beef and one had the hamburger kind). All four of us took home leftovers, the portions are large. I'd go back and try other dishes. They all sounded good.

Can a restaurant with a terrible name like "El Nibble Nook" have great Mexican food? I'm surprised to say it can. Having grown up near the Mexican border I have strong opinions on what makes good Mexican food. I can't say that this is the most "authentic" Mexican food--in my experience, you'll only get that in little hole-in-the-wall places run by Mexican families, frankly--but El Nibble Nook serves truly terrific food. It's ab it overpriced, but the food is fresh, well-made, and very good.

  • John C.

We live near by and have been twice, both times we ended up with that not so good, south of the border, feeling afterwards. First time could be a fluke, second time not so much. So my advice is hit up the nearby Taco Bell or drive a bit for Mexican Fiesta 1 or 2.

  • John N.

I end up at the Nibble Nook for lunch or dinner 3-4 times a year merely because I happen to be in the area. The place is remarkably unremarkable. The food, service, pricing are all just kinda ho-hum.

Food is satisfying for mexican. Outstanding dish are the nachos, or bonitas. tall and stacked with veggies and meat. They have gooey nacho sauce on request but the standard is monterrey. Okay let me make this clear. Best Margaritas I Have Ever Had in ANY restaurant. And they mix a full batch daily and run it through and ice machine so its cold on request. Best way to drink margaritas is on ice. Order one of these first and you'll be giving your own rave review on "el nibble nook"

updating my review, yet again! i really want to like this place because it is in the neighborhood, however i visited recently and had hair in my chicken and cheese enchiladas. this was the second time this happened here! the first time was about 2 years ago on cinco de mayo. the waitress was understanding and assured me that they wear gloves and what not in the kitchen. she also explained how this had never happened before, but obviously that's not true but i do not blame her for it. i have worked in food service before and i know the slightest thing can happen without the workers knowing. i think that is just a sign for me to never go back, i have given this place so many chances and it seems that there is alwaaaaays a problem, no matter big or small! the hair honestly didn't even bother me that much but the fact that it happened twice makes me think that they are practicing unsafe habits in their kitchen, but who knows. very unfortunate that i have to go all the way down to one star :(

But if you are in the mood for a great authentic Mexican meal (California Burritos make my tummy happy) in a laid back relaxing atmosphere then the Nook is for you.

updating my review, yet again! i really want to like this place because it is in the neighborhood, however i visited recently and had hair in my chicken and cheese enchiladas. this was the second time this happened here! the first time was about 2 years ago on cinco de mayo. the waitress was understanding and assured me that they wear gloves and what not in the kitchen. she also explained how this had never happened before, but obviously that's not true but i do not blame her for it. i have worked in food service before and i know the slightest thing can happen without the workers knowing. i think that is just a sign for me to never go back, i have given this place so many chances and it seems that there is alwaaaaays a problem, no matter big or small! the hair honestly didn't even bother me that much but the fact that it happened twice makes me think that they are practicing unsafe habits in their kitchen, but who knows. very unfortunate that i have to go all the way down to one star :(

    (4)

  • Greg W.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
