I just had lunch here half hour ago. My experience was apparently quite dif from other guests. My thoughts...if you think this is a good Mex food stop, you have not been past the city limits! I had chicken tacos on flour torts. Just ok. No fresh jalapenos to fry or ? They do have pickled ones though. Service was good. I would not return.

the service is bad, bad, no one wants to go the extra mile to make you happy. Food was not good, and again service was terrible. Not a way to treat new guess. I will never go back or refer anyone. Sorry but how do you stay in business???

We eat here all the time! I don't feel guilty about bringing my family in even a couple times a week. You truly get a home cooked meal every time! Nothing is pre made or prepackaged. The food is very authentic and rather addicting! The guacamole is made fresh when you order and I recommend trying it. I love that the chips are unsalted! Save room for dessert! The decor is simple and can take you by surprise at first but don't let that fool you.

If you're looking for Mexican food, Mexicali Allies is your place. If you're looking for Tex Mex, go to a chain. This place has Mexican food to rival the Mexican food in Detroit or even (perhaps) Chicago! We were so shocked! How could a tiny little town in the middle of Michigan have such great Mexican food? Almost everything is made from scratch and from natural ingredients, and you won't find lard in the refried beans. Therefore, feel free to bring your vegetarian & vegan friends to Mexicali Allies! I ordered taco pueblonas, a hot & spicy combo of three corn tortillas with chicken, cheese, and spicy pueblanos sauce. I can handle a lot (and I really mean a lot) of spice, and I drank a ton of water to put out the flames! Loved it! The restaurant looks a little dingy, and the service is a little odd. When we walked in, the wait person yelled "Two?" from the kitchen without taking the time to cross the restaurant to us. Also, the restaurant doesn't have a liquor license, and pop is only sold by the can. Iced tea is sold by the glass, but patrons can only get one refill. Furthermore, the music played overhead was horrendous outdated 80s & 90s lite rock during our visit. Um...perhaps try some tropoicales or la musica ranchera? Therefore, my suggestion is to do take out. The food is good, but the ambiance (in regards to several facets) leaves a little to be desired. Besides, take out will allow you to pair your tacos with any beverage in any quantity you choose. Trust me on this one. I've got your back.

The food is good, but they have no people skills. Oh and don't fold the new menus or you'll get yelled at!! It would be nice if they had a liqueur license, I love a margarita with my mexican food. The decor is so dated and the carpeting is gross. I've also called for take out a few times, you'd better know exactly what you want or the lady that answers the phone will get mad at you. Maybe she's related to the "soup nazi"?

If I judged only on apperance, this place would be one star. The food however is very good. I have been to a million Mexican restaurants and this food is good. Besides the interior needing a huge make over, the small basket of chips gets a deduct. Service for us was fast and friendly.

Very disappointed with my lunch. Ordered spinach enchiladas and the spinach was overly wet with no seasoning. Told the waitress and she only apologized. Very surprised. To make the visit more interesting the ceiling dropped just over our heads, with sprinkles of ceiling falling over our table, again the waitress had a very relaxed approach and suggested we move to the other side of restaurant? Very disappointed on the lack of service. I even mentioned once again while paying my check about the burritos. Again she apologized but she seemed very unaffected. Probably won't go back.

The morons writing these bad reviews would not know good, authentic Mexican food if it jumped up and bit them. Everything is fresh and deliciously prepared. If your use to eating at Chili's or Qdoba and calling it Mexican just stick with that. Sure, the interior may need a complete redo and a liquor (not liqueur as one genius spelled it) license would be nice. But, you get over those two items real quick when you taste the awesome food.

I'm giving this place one star out of sheer generosity. From the moment I walked in, I had a feeling this was not going to be good. Starting with the service. There was one woman who was attending to everyone, and she wasn't the most cheerful of servers either. She wasn't attentive, which i understand since she was alone but it made the experience that much more unpleasant. Now the food was definitely not authentic Mexican, which I expected, but it wasn't even good Mexican food. I ordered the chicken enchiladas off of the lunch menu, and was very disappointed. It was very bland and almost looked like it was something that was heated up rather than cooked. My bf ordered the chicken burrito, and did not get what he ordered. His plate looked the same as mine, and he was not happy about it. We didn't even bother to complain, we just ate the food to get out of there as quick as possible. It's unfortunate for me to give such a low rating and bad review on a Mexican place, but this place just wasn't any good. Maybe I went on a bad day, but my experience was a bummer all around.

Tucked into the heart of Howell if you drive through to fast you'll pass it. Been around for as long as I can remember. My family came here when we lived in Howell back when I was a child. I still return when I'm in town. The flavors are spot on. The salsa served with chips are delicious. The staff has always been nice to me. Family owned and operated. Definitely give this place a try. I like it much better than the other Mexican restaurants that have showed up in the last 12 years.

Don't go here unless you want terrible service, to listen to the women in the back swear and talk about getting wasted and ... Have very limited options! Only Mexican place I've ever been that doesn't serve shrimp!?

We do not go here for the decor! Always great food, good prices, fun, I enjoy the combo plate so I can enjoy all of the unique flavors. The chips and salsa are fantastic. You have try this hard to find gem.

Great food, everything tasted fantastic. The mexican sandwich was especially good. Price was a good value. I wish they served chips and salsa before meal. Water tasted like it was from the tap. We will be going again I'm sure of it.

This is a unique place. The owner shops everyday for her ingredients no trucked in cans sitting around. We received good service. I'm not sure where some of these poor service reviews are coming from? The desserts are absolutely fantastic, and made with love! :)

Tried this place for the first time last week after driving by for years. Bad decision on my part. First I called to ask a few questions and was told "we don't use sour cream sauce on our chicken enchiladas, if that's what you want go to a fast food joint". I should have stopped there but I didn't. We all decide on what we want and call to place an order. I tell her we would like to place an order and will be there to eat at noon, and she says no we don't do that. A few mins later I call back to place a carry out and her attitude has somehow changed from bad cop to good cop and takes the order without any issue. We arrive at noon and we get greeted and seated instantly with open arms until we told her that we had a call in order. I asked her if we could stay seated and eat there and she says "no get up and follow me, your food is up here" as she rudely snatches up the menus and herds us to the cash register. Things only got worse when we wanted to all pay separately, like it was the biggest inconvenience ever. I say to a friend "I'm not sure why they are so mad", and she says "excuse me what did you say". I explained that I was unsure why they are treating us so rude, there was only 1 table in the entire establishment being used and they would not allow us to eat in. She said it gets complicated and customers would be mad that we received our meal before they did even though it was obvious that we called before hand due to the bag and styrofoam containers. They would have made more $ just by letting us eat there, we all would have bought a drink and tipped on the way out. I told her she could lose a possible valued customer over a simple table and she responded "that's your problem not mine". All I could do was laugh in disbelief. So we go outside and eat our meal on the curb. I wish I would have taken her first suggestion and ate fast food. This "authentic" Mexican food was absolutely horrible. I grew up in Texas and do know quality authentic Mexican cuisine. The rice was pasty, chicken was an odd color grey with not much flavor, and the salsa was watery with almost no taste. Our complimentary chips and salsa consisted of 1 very small bag of chips and 1 small container of watery salsa. All of that for four grown men. Horrible customer service from both people we dealt with, and the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten will keep me from EVER returning again. We had high hopes being only a few blocks from work but things didn't work in our favor, better luck somewhere else I guess.

The food is average, not authentic Mexican food by any means. The taste seemed like the ingredients come from a can. The service was just ok.

Love...love... This place.. The best hot sauce around and food is made fresh. Love the Mexican sandwich and burritos and the tacos and nachos. I love al of it. And their desserts are incredible.

Excellent - Authentic - Affordable - Delicious! All homemade & fresh. One of Howells best kept secrets. Super sweet and attentive waitresses and nice location right in downtown. Altho, parking can be challenging. Only bummer is that they don't serve alcohol. Hard to eat Mexican without a Margarita or Corona but great carryout! mexicaliallies.com

This is the best Mexican food I've ever had - and I've been to Mexico! The service and owner is iffy - she's balls to the wall, however, I order from this restaurant once every two weeks and my order is always fantastic. I've come to long for Mexicali Allies food - it's a craving! There is something about their cheese that is so wonderful - my mouth is watering just thinking about it. They do keep super weird hours - it's a family run business so they don't have much staff. However, the food is worth their crazy hours! The ambiance in the restaurant is not very nice - I recommend take out. If you're a true foodie - you'll just realize that this Mexican food is the best out there - especially if you live in Howell!

While they have good food, better than most in Howell, (we go to Brighton typically for Mexican) their service isn't great and they are not into being flexible. Like if you want sour cream they make sure to tell you that it is extra, twenty times. Just makes me uncomfortable. Like you are bothering them by adding it, when it is a typical condiment for Mexican. Last time we went we had take out and they treated us like trash, and I am not sure why. We will stick to Border Cantina. Further to drive, but worth it.

Small, family-owned hole-in-the-wall in downtown Howell. Yummy, inexpensive, well-made food. No liquor license, but still very enjoyable. Strange hours, however, check the web site before you go.

Little hole in the wall joint in downtown Howell. Part of the food was wonderful, part not so good. The spinach enchiladas were good but the menu said they came with sour cream sauce, but actually they were topped with sour cream. The beans i could not tell if they were straight out of a can or just overpowered with lard. I did like the rice. I loved the chips and salsa but hubby didn't. The place is shabby but i felt so comfortable in the humble cafe. I found the plain congregational church chairs more comfortable that most restaurants. The ceiling fans kept us cool. Very laid back; not the same little guys hustling around. So its a mixed bag. I thinks its worth a try; and its better than chain restaurants; a decent vegetarian selection.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
