I give this Arby's five stars for the excellent attitude of its staff. We arrived and it was obvious the staff was beginning to close. It's not like the area is busy so I am guessing there had not been any customers in some time. We ordered a rather large amount of food and it was all cooked fresh.

Open late so it is a great fast alternative when you get back from snow activities! We were out skiing and got back around 8 pm everything else was either closed or getting ready to close! So we stopped by and the service and food were as expected-great!

Hands down my favorite place in the state for chicken wings, period! The 911 wings here are amazing as well as their homemade blue cheese dressing. Great atmosphere and great food.
This nice little restaurant was recommended to us by a friend. It's a family style restaurant, where your u can get a beer. The ribs fell off the bone. Wonderful food! Good recommendation.
Excellent food. Great service. Very friendly staff. Food took a little while to come, but was worth the wait on a Friday evening.

After reading through some of the reviews on here, we thought we would try the Mexican night. It was terrible! The service was definitely lacking, too. We sat without so much as a "be right with you" for at least 15 minutes and it was not busy. The food was awful. My sister ordered a cheeseburger and even that was bad. The meat used in the tacos and enchiladas did not seem to be beef, but i couldn't tell you what it was. the enchiladas sauce was like the sauce in spaghettios, but sweeter. the fajitas were terrible, too and I'm not sure how you can mess these things up, but they did. We will not be going back there...ever!
Well worth the drive from Harrison when we visit the cottage.
An accidental discovery a few years ago - Now we stop every time we travel up north. Nice menu variety for a little place, and the food tastes like you could've made it at home. (I always get breakfast.) Consistently friendly & responsive waitstaff. Nice for kids b/c of the boot-shaped drinking glasses and the peg games you can play at the table while you're waiting.

The Back Door is open under new ownership/management. The place is cleaner than ever. The menu has a nice selection and the food is really good. They have a solid variety of craft and traditional beers. This is a great place to have a meal and some drinks without the rough bar crowd.
Food is always top notch. We have never had a bad experience and it's always a blast sitting at the bar chatting with the owners. So friendly and the atmosphere is great.
Drinks are too expensive. Food is hit or miss. There are better choices in Houghton Lake.

I think that family diners in small towns can be hit or miss. Sometimes you find a spectacular gem with delicious food and sometimes you find a dud. Unfortunately, this place was a total dud. I came here with a friend for lunch and the food was absolutely terrible. I had a turkey wrap and he had a burger. The food was not fresh and the wrap was poorly made. My friend's burger was not cooked well and the meat was tough. Even the fries sucked. It was so unappetizing that neither of us came close to finishing our meals. The only positive thing about this place was that the waitress was attentive. I would give this place zero stars if I could.
Came with a group of 7 on Sunday after a weekend of swimming and beer. We waited about half an hour for a table. Surprisingly quick, considering how small the place is. The hostess and waitresses were all incredibly nice and kept us updated on when our table would be ready I tried to order Chicken and Biscuits, but unfortunately they were out. The waitress apologized a lot, and I ordered country fried steak instead. I got a free bowl of coleslaw out of it- a little sweet, but fresh and tasty. I needed it. Let me tell you, I demolished that steak. It was flavorful, not dried out, with great breading. The sausage gravy was a fantastic complement. I could have used half a dollop more, but I didn't actually need it, good coverage. The hash browns on the side were perfectly cooked- crispy on the outside, salted well. It certainly hit the spot. Everyone else's meals were plentiful and I didn't hear any complaints. A grilled salmon salad ordered by one of my friends looked fantastic. The orange juice that I needed was boring and probably from a big plastic jug, but it helped me through the morning. Highly recommend this place for breakfast, I'm sure the lunch and dinner are all just as good. I'd go back!
5 stars for service... 3.5 stars for food. American Fries were cooked to order, well done, which I appreciated, but lacking in taste. I ordered sausage gravy and biscuits which were very fresh, and you can tell were home made. Tasted very good. I also ordered a side of sausage patties to go with my sausage gravy and biscuits. I ordered them well done, they were cooked perfectly tasted wonderful. The server was the best. She was very friendly, efficient and made sure my order was just right!

Great breakfasts! Portions are big for the price. Never have a problem getting seated either. Never had a bad meal there.
Update : Still good, but not quite up to where it was when it first opened. This is a great place for simple american food. Everything is made fresh and fast, with a clean and friendly environment. Try to catch a burger day, or a Joe's Big Greek salad when they are in season. The coney dogs are great as well. They are busy most days for lunch, but I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my lunch. Skip the fish fry.
Food okay, very rude staff. I miss Ron's always friendly and smiling staff, you won't find that at Joes. Extremely disappointed with the service.

Visited for breakfast. Great omelette and great price. Staff kept coffee filled and were very courteous. Definitely recommend.
. I got the bacon and cheese omelet and it was pretty decent. It's just a small diner type restaurant and the prices are really good. My sister in law went for lunch and said the olive burger was really good.
We were so excited to try this place based on the reviews. When we arrived at 445PM today, the restaurant was closed and there was no signage indicating when the restaurant would open. Ended up at Buccilli's down the road, fantastico!

Food was good, but my friend and our waitress had a communication problem, not helped by the vagueness of what comes w/ what on the menu. Omelette/scramble was decent, but smothered the American fries, depriving them of their identity. Sausage gravy was excellent, and coffee was good; people around us liked their pancakes. A little crowd control at the cash register would help; folks had a tendency to gather there and chat - or worse, text - making it uncomfortable for nearby diners and those waiting to be seated; perhaps moving the numerous paperbacks [mis]placed there for sale would help. I might return again, but only after I'd checked out the other breakfast spots in HL I haven't already.
Bought a cottage in the area and I've been here less than a year. I'm going to Shakers many times great waitstaff and good food. We have only been here for breakfast but I've never been disappointed. Pancakes are wonderful! Many different flavors!
Krystal was awesome! Food is always good and quick. Service is ALWAYS friendly and top notch!!!

After dinner at the Kilkare Inn, I was taken to the Old Town Tavern, way over in the Heights area. Enter through the back, walk through the storage room, enter this little bar that has probably been exactly the same since it opened (with maybe a few less people). A group full of regulars watched us as we entered, though luckily an older woman greeted us and thought it was weird that I would ask if they had Stroh's or PBR. They do - this is a Michigan Dive that has its priorities straight. I'm sure it formed that way out of necessity, as the seventies ended and the tourism in the area is not what it used to be. There was a DJ setting up in the corner, providing us with information on the shuffleboard table that is more than a little beat up and how to operate it. We did, although the table was sloped more on one side than the other- and any slope on a shuffleboard table is likely to cause some major issues. After bumping against the score buttons a million times due to the cramped quarters and a bunch of failed attempts at scoring, we gave up. Luckily, the beer was cheap, the company wasn't terrible, and the bartender was nice. Worth a stop by for a Houghton Lake Dive experience.
