I don't know why all the bad reviews for this place. Maybe it depends on the type of "Mexican" you're into? Despite the reviews from several years ago, we have found this to be fairly authentic, good Mexican food. Husband is used to real street Mexican from LA and Baja area, and this is his favorite, far preferred to La Cantina across the street. Are there better places in Mexicantown? Sure, but for semi-rural Oakland/Livingston County, it's pretty decent. We've been probably 10 times and never had a bad experience of food or service.

No people, this is not authentic. Sub-par at best. Considering I ordered food to go, my review is purely based off the quality of the food. We ordered 4 Taco's.. 2 hard shell with chicken, cheese, & onion, the other 2 soft shell with just chicken and cheese.. As well as an order of the chicken and cheese nachos. When we got the order all of the tacos were soft shell & they forgot to give us the nachos. We went back in & got the hardshell tacos as well as the nachos. I noticed they put a classic AMERICAN nacho cheese on the tortilla chips, which I am not a personal fan of because 1) It makes the chips soggy & tastes terrible. 2) It. Is. Not. Authentic. The real problem was with the Taco's. The hardshell was cheap, & yet again not authentic. Pretty sure they found the cheapest taco shells to order from GFS. The chicken was okay.. No flavor, & super dry. The soft shell was also very dry and bland. Over all not impressed in the slightest bit & google reviews are extremely misleading for this establishment.

Went in for a quick lunch yesterday and will never go back. I was the only one there when I got there just before noon. I ordered the Texas fajitas. The shrimp was cooked well. The steak and chicken a bit over done but not bad. lots of meat. Few veggies. I did notice on the menu that they charge extra for chips and salsa refills. There was enough for one person so that was OK. Made a mental note not to bring the family. I was shocked when I got my bill. The fajitas came with the 3 teeny tiny tortillas. So of course I asked for more. You would need at least 9 for the meal. They charged me a dollar for 3 more teeny tiny tortillas!!!! Major rip off!!! Will NEVER return.

Excellent authentic Mexican food. It was a perfect amount of food, I had the enchilada verdes, and my husband had one off the a la carte menu with green sauce. Friendly and attentive waiter, relaxed atmosphere with charming decor. Pedestrian was nice too. Not the best margaritas but tasty experience nonetheless. I will definitely come back.

Great Food, Terrible Service, With a Nasty Surprise Let me start out with some details. Yesterday was my first time eating here we were celebrating a birthday and had a party of 8, 3 adults 2 teens and 3 children. It was also cinco de mayo and maybe my expectations were too high. Positives: The decorations looked awesome just as I would like a Mexican restaurant to look. They had a live band which I assume was only for Cinco de Mayo the music was actually mexican. I got the Aracherra skirt steak which reminded me almost too much of Mexico. The steak was perfectly cooked and was absolutely delicious. Negatives: The service It was so bad i don't know if the food was worth dealing with their staff. When we arrived we asked for a table near the band and we were willing to wait we waited nearly half an hour watching people come in and out. When we finally got sat we were nowhere near the band, instead they sat us near the bar area. The complimentary chips and salsa they gave us were okay. Next was the waitress, she walked up to our table did not even introduce herself or anything simply asked us what we wanted to drink and left no suggestions what's so ever and the drink menu is not easy to find. After waiting a good 10 minutes she finally returned with our drinks and to take our order. Taking our order was fine. She took another 10 minutes to come check and see if we needed any refills and then after waiting an additional 15 minutes we finally received refills at this point I was wondering where our food was. Finally 30 minutes after ordering our food was finally out and still one of our dishes didn't come out. She checked on our party one more time have us the bill (found out her name was Amanda) and left. I tried to find a manager to speak to but couldn't seem to get one. On top of the poor service she managed to slip in a couple audible "oh f**k's" in there. If I had been tipping this waitress would have received a 5% tip at the most. Two stars thanks to the food otherwise I would give no stars.

This was a pretty good place for lunch. The location is awkward, it's hidden behind a McDonald's, in the corner of a strip mall. The chips and salsa was generous, the chips were hot and the salsa was chunky, with a good blend of celronto and garlic. There are several lunch specials, I went with a chicken chimichanga, which was crispy and delicious. I also had a small Margarita, on the rocks - no complaints. If you are in the area looking for a good sit down restaurant - this is a good option.

I love this place! Their shrimp fajita nachos are amazing! And their margaritas are the best in town (ie. they actually put liquor in them). My fav of the local Mexican place!

Our family ate dinner at Herradura with a friend from Mexico tonight and were very happy that he said the food reminded him of his grandmothers meals at home. We love it too! Good job Herradura staff!

Resteruant is nicely themed, however the service was as bland as thier food. The wait staff drops off your food and you don't see them until they give you the bill. Saw my waiter sitting in a corner texting instead of checking on us. Taco meat was unseasoned and made from hamburger that tasted bland but very greasy. While I don't consider Taco bell a serious Mexican restaurant, it is much more authentic than this place.

Still looking for the best mexican food in the area. Tried La Herradura out... it was decent. Very clean, nicely decorated. Service was OK. Margarita was on special, had a couple, they were good. Food was about average for a mexican place. I'd go back.

Went there after church on a Sunday afternoon. Two other tables were in use in the restaurant and the service was very slow. Queso dip was OK, but you only got a very small dish of it. I was pretty shocked that the prices seemed much higher than Los Tres Amigos (a favorite!) and Cancun Mexican (in Okemos) and they didn't have the a la carte options that similar mexican restaurants had. My daughter ordered taco salad and it came out soggy because the beef was watery. The same beef was used in my tacos, which were also soggy. By the end of her meal (which she could only eat about half of), the sour cream and 'beef water' had come together to form some sort of soup mess in the tortilla shell, which was just disgusting. We told the waiter who just laughed and then gave us our bill. The food was not nearly as good as comparable mexican food, service was slow and spotty, and it was almost twice the price. Not again for us!

My mother insisted on going there last weekend for my birthday no less, and I can't even begin to explain how horrible it was. There were 8 of us and two children. The waiter barely spoke english so it took him a full 10 minutes to get our orders. I am Mexican but I don't speak spanish unfortunately. After telling our waiter - 4 times - I wanted chicken tacos, I was served beef. The shells are right out of a box and the rice and beans were very bland. My niece ordered something that looked like dog food - no kidding - I am not exaggerating. I wish I would have taken a picture. My husband took one bite of his cheese enchiladas and put his fork down and said no more. Even the chips were cold and stale. I find it hard to believe this place is still open with this kind of food. Truly awful!!! The very next night my husband and I got carry out from Fiesta down the road. Their food is amazing. I told my mom thank you for the dinner but please do not ask me to go there ever again. Anyone who writes a good review for this place surely owns part of it or is trying to help the business stay open.

Very good, fresh, homemade, very attentive service, good taco chocolate dessert. Portions very big.

Ordered carryout for six, had to wait an extra 30 minutes after the original pickup time. Got it home and it was awful! Soggy, cold (I live less than 3 minutes away) and barely edible. Never going there again.

Based on several favorable dining experiences at their location on Grand River in Novi, we decided to try La Herradura in Hartland for Friday dinner. What a disappointment. It's hard to believe these two locations are even part of the same chain. I started getting bad vibes as soon as we were seated. Most Mexican places have chips and salsa at your table even before you have opened the menu. Not here. They did not arrive until after our drinks had been served (the waiter set my beer in front of my wife and her pop in front of me). The chips were bland and the salsa even worse. It had a pureed consistency, and absolutely no flavor or zest. The cilantro was tasteless, the onions rubbery. My supposedly 12 oz. beer was served in one of those thick glass cheater mugs. The food was the worst I have ever had at a Mexican place. I ordered a 3 item combination plate. The tamale was mostly masa, the pork filling sparse and with a weird flavor. The beef filling of my enchilada was greasy and and again with a weird off-taste, the enchilada sauce bland. Worst was the chile relleno. It was an absolutely un-palatable mess of rancid fry grease flavored breading, greasy ground beef and vomitous melted cheese. The pepper was tough and stringy and looked spoiled. UGH! Traditional beans and rice on the side were unremarkable, in fact, you can do better with stuff from a can off the grocery shelf at Krogers. Service was poor. After we were served the waiter never returned to check on us. It took forever to get the bill and our change so we could get the heck out of there. Never going back! Please, Yelp, allow a zero or negative star rating for places like this!

We went here for the first time tonight after a friend recommended this place. We were very disappointed to say the least. The food was ok, not the best but not bad. It was a lil pricey for Mexican. The service was HORRIBLE! We waited almost 5 minutes after sitting down and I had to stop a server to say we hadn't been helped yet. It was a Saturday night and busy and they only had maybe 3 servers in the whole restaurant. The food took at least 20 minutes and we had to ask for chip refills from 2 people and finally got the refill 10 minutes after asking. I wish I could say we would return but we definitely will not.

I called ahead for a birthday party of eight on a Sunday afternoon and everything was set up for us perfect, we all ordered beers that were $3.99 on special and they were huge 32 oz and were great! The waiter didn't know the menu very well and ordering was difficult at best, we all ordered trio meals with chicken beef and steak tips. The dinners all came out at reasonable times however nobody had steak tips, either we had chicken and chicken or beef and chicken; when we asked why we had no steak tips the waiter said they were not done yet and if we wanted them we would have to wait a half hour, they never even asked us if the substitutes were okay. The chips and salsa were bland the meal was bland and the bill took 30 minutes to get back; very disappointed and probably won't be back ever which is sad. When I was walking out the door the waiter gave me a take out box of the steak tips to go.. Sorry too late. Also when we first complained about not having steak tips the waiter tried to tell us that we were wrong and that our meals didn't include beef tips; I had to go grab a menu to show him that he was wrong, unacceptable.

I was raised in Southwest Detroit and am of Mexican decent, so I know a little bit about Mexican cuisine. Having lived outside of SWD for almost 20 years, I had all but given up on a good Mexican restaurant in Livingston County...until I went to La Herradura. The decor is loud and fun, the margaritas are tasty and the food is as close to traditional as I've experienced out here (they add a little too much cheese/sour cream for my taste, but that's what folks like). The carnitas, arrachera, tacos al pastor are great! The chile verde is tasty (not spicy) and the chile relleno is different, but also tasty. My mom's cooking is the standard, so I can't give them a 5 out of 5, but I would eat here over ANY Mexican restaurant this side of Southwest Detroit. If you like your Mexican food AUTHENTIC, then you'll be a fan of La Herradura!

Herradura disappointed me this week:(. I came in on a Wednesday night and the service was very slow, and to top it off I ordered the fajitas and they were horrible. The steak was overcooked and dried out, honestly I"m not even sure you could call it steak. I don't know if their cook was out or what, but I'm not content with my experience and hope it does not happen again.

My wife and I have been searching for a year to find a Mexican restaurant in this part of mid-Michigan. We came from the SE part of the state where the cuisine can be chosen by the region of Mexico that you want to visit. So, we have been very disappointed in what is offered. The food at La Herradura was okay. It wasn't bounding with spice, but it wasn't Anglo-food either. They had a chorizo appetizer, which was very good. The main issue with this restaurant is the service. Our appetizer came out AFTER the main dishes. We then were basically ignored by our waitress and the manager as we tried to flag someone down for a box and a bill. It took 25 minutes after we'd finished to get a bill and get out of the place. The manager seemed more interested in the people who's table was right next to ours (Even calling our waitress AWAY from our table in mid-sentence to have her greet those guests). Then the manager walked by our table, looked at all of our dirty plates, and continued on to the other table to clear their dishes and personally hand them their bill. I guess you have to be "friends of the restaurant" to get anything near normal service.

Ordered food 25 minutes prior to arrival. Waited 15 minutes for food. Weeknight. Not busy. I think there were more staff than patrons on hand. Loved the decor. Food was not so great. No beans with your meal, which is an expected staple at most Mexican restaurants. I ordered chicken Chimichanga, and it gave me serious intestinal upset. I didn't think that was the culprit, so I ate the leftovers for lunch two days later, and (once again, exactly 12 hours later), I had cramping and diarrhea... as well as my toddler. I originally didn't think it was heir food... but what I hadn't realized was that my toddler didn't really eat any of her chicken that night... only daddy's steak and the rice and chips -- this time, she ate half a chicken taco and had the same symptoms as mommy. I attempted to contact them. Spoke to "Eric" who said he was the manager. But all he did was argue with me and tell me that their food has never made anyone sick. So unless you like gas pains and running to the bathroom in a panic for several hours... avoid this place. :(

This is the craziest place to eat. The food is good. That's the only reason I keep subjecting myself to the twilight zone call La Herradura. The waiters disappear for long periods of time. LONG periods of time. I think it's a strategy to save money on drink refills. Don't gulp your water, it has to last your entire meal. The other strange thing is that you cannot read your receipt. I know I have been overcharged there, but since I can't read Spanish and they don't speak English, I just pay and shake my head. I am convinced that La Herradura translates to "welcome back sucker".

I had a taco salad. My husband had enchilada lunch. The meat in the salad tasted funny. I could not eat more than a couple bites. We both became ill after leaving :( decor was very cute. Waiter was attentive. He did not speak English well. My husband requested no onions. Enchilada was full of onions :(

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
