This is my neighborhood bakery and I enjoy stopping in. However, I'm a pastry snob and fancy myself more of an Astoria or Shatila Bakery kind of man. I will say that the ladies are always friendly and hands down, New Palace is the place to get a Pazcki. The Rose Hip Jelly ones are my favorite. They actually have them everyday. What I really like, and they do this very well, is their rye breads. Get either the onion rye or the marble rye. They also carry Ukrainian Pasca at Easter. Double check their day-old tray for a bargain. Day old donuts do just fine with some hot coffee. Their chrusciki is always very good as well. The use of higher quality ingredients is what can really take New Palace to the next level. But why change for me? People love New Palace for how it is. FYI-Avoid the long wait on Fat Tuesday. They are open 24 hours the day before and there is ever hardly a wait. Plus they are more fresh.

I think it's silly that yelp makes you write a review of a certain length in order for it to be posted as a review and not a "Tip" ... When all I really want to say here is, "Perfection" ... So I have to fill up space with nonsense.

Best paczkis for Fat Tuesday. We should of called ahead. Wait was about 35 minutes. We didn't have time to wait it out this time. Will plan better next time.

Wow! There is literally so much to choose from. I kept asking the poor girl for recommendations but honestly, how can you choose??? The girls working behind the counter are super nice and more than willing to help you out. And the prices are insanely cheap! OH MY GOSH! I got 4 items for $1.80. How do they even make money? -Lemon Poppy Seed Roll: it's quite refreshing with bits of poppy seed throughout. It's slightly dry--more like bread, but a nice light snack. I love the lemon poppy seed glaze--that's what makes it nice. -Almond Roll: there's a slight hint of almond but it's more just like vanilla bread. It's light. -Angel Wings: nicely fried dough with powder. It's less sugary than a funnel cake. The dough isn't sweet at all so you need to rely on the powdered sugar to get your sugar fill. -Raspberry Kolaczki: it doesn't have much of a taste. Just dough basically with a hint of raspberry syrup. Nothing special. FINAL VERDICT: to be fair, I didn't order what I would normally consider to be delicious (ooey-gooey brownies or fudge or doughnuts)--so that's kinda why nothing stood out as being delicious. Everything was well baked and a good light snack, but nothing fulfilled my sugar-needs. But I'd go back and support this local bakery any day.

I'm very happy with the Packzis I got for work today. I was worried with how crowded they would be today, but they got our large order correct. We pre-ordered, so the wait outside was only 25 min. Not too bad considering. They were pretty inexpensive, had lots of flavors, and the fillings were amazing. I'm excited to check out the rest of the bakery on a less busy day sometime.

We bought Babka...Paskos...Seven Sisters cake...2 days before easter. The place was packed full of happy excited people waiting for all kinds of baked goods. Staff was energetic and engaged. Later, a taste of the baked goods and we completed the trifecta. A perfect experience. My heritage is 3/4 Slovak but as there are few Slovak bakeries around I borrow from the Poles and I can report that the baked goods here brought back memories.

If your going to make the trip out for paczki's, than do yourself a favor and go authentic and go to the best place in the area. Never Ever a bad baked good from this place! However I do suggest that if you are going to venture out on Fat Tuesday to order your paczki's ahead of time. I've made the mistake in the past of not pre-ordering and then had to wait 3 hours in line to get my paczki... No joke this place is THAT good! The decorating is very polish and really out of date, but really no one cares! Their awesome baked goods make up for it! At $15.25 a dozen for Paczki's its completely worth it!!

The place to go for paczki, chrusciki, and other Polish goodies. Can't wait to go back, so good.

Everything is super fresh. I've been coming here for years. This is the place to go for paczki!

Went here for my Fat Tuesday pczkis and they are very yummy. I think there were at least 150 people in line in front of me and it took a bit over an hour to get my order and out of there. But I still found the staff very friendly when it got to my turn, and quick without making me feel like I needed to hurry up. I think the staff's positive attitude helped keep the people waiting for a long time in line pretty mellow. And the number system kept assisting people in good order. I want to go back soon to try some other pastries and pasties. Overall, the quality seemed good, but the custard pczki filling was more of a jello style custard. I would be willing to pay a bit more for real custard since the flavor is a huge difference.

This review is based solely on their paczki. I was a virgin to this Hamtramck tradition, where one can wait a good a good 2 hours in a line in honor of Fat Tuesday, aka Paczki Day. Was it worth the wait? Heck yes it was. Someone complained about them being sort of smooshed, which was true, but they were so busy that I can't really blame them for just throwing them in the box. I didn't mind, they still tasted just as delicious. I docked it one star because of the price- there were other places in Hamtramck selling a dozen for $10, and I paid over $13. whatever.

fat tuesday this year i snuck in right under the bell. the creepster mcjones that worked the door locked it right after i walked in. the paczkis were fresh, delicious and stuffed with prunes. also some lemon, custard and raspberry. everyone i know was amazed by these treats as i was. i even think i might get our wedding cake from there. think they'll put two dudes on the top. with one wearing a polish pricess t-shirt? love, juston

First stop on my wedding cake search. One friend insisted that this place is as good as it gets. Well.... it sure is tasty. He is right there. Somehow the dust covered display wedding cakes did not inspire confidence. We'll keep looking.

The D goes crazy when Fat Tuesday starts approaching. Stories in the paper, on tv, around the office, and among friends about where are you picking up puczkis. Or which bakery has the best puczkis. The debate goes on and on every year. After years of having probably "fake puczkis" from bakeries and then finding that this place has the real deal, from the looks of the two hour line out the store and down the street on Fat Tuesday, I've come to a conclusion. I think I'll stick with the fake ones for two reasons. 1. No two hour wait and even if I preorder mine, which I did, I still had to wait 45 minutes to force myself ahead of everyone to get to the preorder line. I have to mention, when I ordered them, they said there would be a preorder line and if there is a line out the door, just walk right up and come in and say you preordered. Tell that to the guy two times my size who has been waiting for two hours in line and I walk right up, cut in front of him and say, sorry preorder. The looks I got, I could have been a guy on death row. Therefore, two hours or 5 minutes at a local bakery making puczkis not made in Hamtramck. 2. Density. This is what really determined it. Call me a fake puzcki lover, fake polish, what ever you want, but the fake ones, well, they are just better than these dense, brick-like donuts. The fake ones are light and easy to palate all that sugar. Maybe puczkis are supped to be like that, its tradition, etc... Ok, well then I guess I just prefer the lighter ones than.

What a great find! All kinds of Polish and other yummy sweets made in-house...all at such low prices that I'm not sure how they make money.

Lovely place. I mean, we waited for an hour or so but it was right before the holidays, and clearly everyone there thought it was worth it. Not a complaint in the crowd. Yum.

If you're interested in Pazcki or angel wings (chrusciki), at least, this is THE place to go in SE Michigan - nothing else comes close. I ordered a couple dozen (for work!) ahead of time, and when I arrived the afternoon before Fat Tuesday, they were literally jammed tight with people - respectful people who offered to pull your ticket for you and made room for people coming and going. Because I'd ordered in advance, I only had a 5-minute wait, and they were super kind about me adding onto my order and otherwise taking up their time. The price was a steal. The baked goods were incredibly fresh. We're customers for life.

This place is a VERY good old school bakery. Lots of variety and lots of fresh baked goodness. While many reviews rave about the Polish baked goods, the awesomeness is not limited to Polish goodies. I've never had a bad baked good from this place, and I've sampled a decent portion of the inventory.

They changed their recipe for paczki this year and they tasted stale. We purchased ours on Monday to avoid the wait in line.

Paczkis was very good. I had a blueberry and it was really filled with the filling. We waited about 20 minutes which was great for it being so busy. Disappointed that a lot of the flavors were gone because they sounded very good and unique.

Don't get your Packzi here. They are very skimpy on filling and feel day old. Not cheap either I had to wait in line and not satisfied at all. We paid 8-9 for a half dozen of what seems to be day old Packzi.

This place is deadly. I walked in and everything I saw I went "oooh, that looks good." Their seeded rye is delicious. Their kolacky are the best I have ever had from a bakery. The poppy seed cake is pure heaven. Now that I know it exists... I'm doomed. CASH ONLY. Get here early if you want to beat the babushkas to the marbled and braided breads.

This Bakery has been around for over 100 years and is one of THE places to pick up a traditional Polish doughnut or Paczki. The fruit or custard filled doughnuts are rich in calories and flavor. Also save room for some of their many other wonderful treats, including homemade cookies, bread and beautiful "7 Sisters" (or Brothers) cake. Not to Miss: I often bring back a box of their lovely chrusciki (angel wings) when I go home to Detroit. These yummy pieces of fried dough are covered with powdered sugar. . . a year-round treat!

Best bakery in metro Detroit! Nice helpful staff and superb goods! Great location right in the heart of the Hamtram!

Not like the old days but it still satisfies my sweet tooth. I love the butter cookies and kruschiki. Good old fashion pumpernickel, buttermilk, and rye breads. Try the poppyseed or almond coffee cake - you won't be disappointed.

I think I am the only person in the world that simply thinks this place is ok. The atmosphere is that of a traditional bakery. The service is out of this world. It's the baked goods that are just so so. I think it's great that they have paczki every day. The problem is...it's just not that good. Let me clarify...it is not traditional. Forgive me for nor being able to spell the other polish delights that we tried but seriously everything is just mediocre. I would pass.

Walking through the door brings back so many memories of my childhood. Their crusciki are the best ever...so light...so delicious. The chocolate rolled cakes with creme inside and covered with chocolate sprinkles are not to be missed. It's been 30 years since I've lived in the Detroit area, but every visit includes a stop at the bakery. My car smells of fresh breads -- buttermilk, rye and dark pumpernickel -- all the way home! How delightful! Be certain to visit on a cold winter day when the windows are covered with frost. There is nothing better than walking in to that glorious scent to make you feel like a kid again. Enjoy!

NP is still a good bakery, but I think the quality of their products has slipped over the last few years. I've found the service to be very slow also. I expect to wait when there's a line, but there can often times be a ridiculously long wait. They need to move quicker or hire more people. I use to go to NP on an almost weekly basis, but now it's a once in a while stop for me.

This place is good. And people often want to know what is better, here or New Martha Washington Bakery. Well, I have tried both numerous times. New Palace Bakery has a much better selection. So depending on what you like/want, this might be the only place to get it. The pricing is a little more expensive than New Palace Bakery. For a pound of Italian Cookies, I paid $2.00 more and I believe the cookies were not as good (although not bad). I had some boston creme-like donuts. Awesome stuff. I believe it was $1.25, and the price was very fair. Would return depending on what I need/want.

One of the best bakeries I have ever been to. It takes you back to how things use to be. Everything is made fresh right there. The staff is always helpful and the variety is endless. We purchases our wedding cake from here and it was a HIT, we had no leftovers and people were talking for days after wards how good it was. Its street parking only, come hungry you won't regret it!

One of the best polish bakeries in Hamtramck. Everything is made on premise and there is a great rotating selection. Some of the most super things I've had here that I'd suggest trying: the bobkas and angel wings. Oh! and if they have snowballs out or black forrest cake don't pass it up. You can also buy potato bread here and it's dang good. Prices are very reasonable and the ladies are very friendly and helpful

I'm a cake fiend the way there are Gucci fiends. This place is an awesome not-so-secret bakery. Their poppy seed cake is packed with such goodness you can almost inhale the opiates. It's pretty delicious for the price that it is. I'm addicted!

Great Rye breat and their buttermilk bread is very yummy. They also have the best Paczki anywhere! Their pastries and cakes are great. Definitely worth checking it out if you are around town.

I love this place - every time I walk in I feel like the kids in Willy Wonka when they see the huge room with the chocolate river. Though Fat Tuesday is usually what draws people in, it would be a shame to only visit New Palace once a year. My favorite are their angel wings - the freshest and most delicious I've ever tasted. They also have little cookies called, "chocolate boys" or "vanilla boys" depending on the flavor, and they're so cute and tasty. I am going to buy a whole bunch of them for my sister's upcoming baby shower since they're expecting a little boy. Also, the staff is very nice. One of the women I see in there often took a lot of extra time with me when I was looking to ship some Paczki to a friend in Austin - including telling me what flavors would best survive the trip and how to pack them. I really appreciated that. PS - Somebody put "cash only" but I believe that is only true during the crazy Fat Tuesday rush.

I got really familiar with the corner New Palace Bakery sits on... It was Fat Tuesday at 10am and the line was out the door, curling around the corner! Sunny and 26 degrees, everyone was in good spirits, longing for the satisfying taste of the traditional polish paczki! The aromas coming from the kitchen were just teasing our noses. There was enough activity going on to keep us well entertained. 4 Detroit cheerleaders dressed in short skirts, fishnets, tank tops, beads and push-up bras were cheering us on! "Happy Paczki Day!" That sure put a smile on everyone's face. Including the cop that wrote a parking ticket to the idiot parked on the curb right in front of us.. We all laughed at his stupidity as he squealed out onto Joseph Campau... The Fox 2 van was parked out in front. After 45 minutes of waiting, I finally stepped foot inside the bakery... I saw a few people walking out with 6 dozen paczkis! I hope they don't run out!! Anyway, I put my order in... 2 dozen paczkis please... They had 2 special mixes. Chocolate-custard and Cherry-custard. I had both and OMG.. So good! So, as I was picking up my magical order, Lee Thomas from Fox 2 interviewed me on my long wait for the paczkis! A-m-a-z-i-n-g! I was live, on the news! check me out! myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/new… ta da! Definitely worth the wait... I savored my first paczki in my car on the way to drop off the first dozen at my fiancé's work... Had powdered sugar all over my face and lap.. But didn't care... Yumm!

This review is based solely on the paczki, though I was tempted to eat my way through the whole place (and might have if it wasn't so packed on Fat Tuesday). Their paczki can only be compared to "just the way my mom used to make when I was growing up." This is NOTHING like your grocery store pazcki and that is the highest compliment I can give. Raspberry was fantastic, with the fillings squirting out, leaving me happy with every bite I took. I will definitely be going back to try other pastries, especially the angel wings, whic taunted me as I stood in line. My word to the wise for paczki day next year: call in your order the day before. I was in and out and back in my car in 30 min.... the drive there took longer and it was worth every second.
