This is my fav bakery in Hamtramck. The pricing is better than other locations in the area. So that is a major plus. The pastries I tried were great. Nothing extradinary but very good. The Italian cookies were AMAZING. They are by the pound and a good mix of styles/flavors. I have been there numerous times and always seem to get a pound of cookies to take to work.

The thing I really like about New Martha Washington is their cake slices. They have about 15 different kinds of sheet cake, and you can buy one slice for about $1.00 - $1.25. All kinds of flavors like Orange/Pineapple Cream, Key Lime, Strawberry, Georgia Peach, Chocolate, and many others they most likely invented themselves. They have so many choices of other sweets (brownies, cookies, coffee cakes, strudels, pies, cheesecake, pies) you almost don't know what to get, or where to start. Their rye breads are amazing, too.

Well maybe they are known for there paczki but I would not recommended anything else there! My family went there last Saturday and everything we bought was very old and nasty! $24.00 for old bread & cakes. The two loaves of bread had mold on them the next day & the cakes had to be at least two weeks old, they were so hard you could of used them for hockey pucks. The only thing that was fresh were the cookies! They should be ashamed of themselves to sell such old garbage to people! I would not recommend this place to anyone save your money!

For those looking to grab a paczki or 12 and don't feel like fighting the crowds on Fat Tuesday then Martha Washington Bakery is the place for you. Serving paczki's year round Martha Washington offers classic fried goodness for mere bucks! And of course being in Hamtramck aka Polish Town, certifies that they know exactly what they're doing, and doing it right. People line up around the block at the crack of dawn to get their paws on some of Martha's filled donuts and its easy to see why. Tasty, tasty, tasty. In addition, this bakery makes delicately beautiful decorated cakes and have a small selection of cookies. But who goes to a Hamtramck bakery for cookies anyway. So, bring a book, hop in line, and get a dozen or 2 of Martha's paczki's for your friends and family on Fat Tuesday.

My mistake to go Monday after work (5 PM) before Fat Tuesday. They sold me day old Paczki. Dough was tough as nails. Donuts had begun to shrink and get wrinkly. Obvious sign of old donuts. Filling was nice and generous. I am used to swollen, tender balls of dough with enough filling for 2 donuts. I could only eat two since it was too tedious to chew anymore!! Next time I will just go on Tuesday and get fresh.

Their brownies are quite nice! They also have an assortment of fudge, peanut butter bars, and cake and cheesecake slices -- orea bars, key lime cake, german chocolate cake... It's little, but glad it's there.

Got paczki here the night before Paczki Day (Fat Tuesday)....waited in line over an hour for these goodies, but it was well worth it!! With 14 flavors to choose from, my head was spinning before I even ordered. Loved the old world feel to this place. I even made some friends while waiting in line!

I was passing through Hamtramck after the bar Monday night, and decided to see if any bakeries were open selling paczki yet, to save myself the drive in the morning. After driving around Hamtramck I found the only open bakery to be New Martha Washington Bakery, so I thought I'd give it a try. The bakery itself is very nice looking, with very good curb appeal (as opposed to its run-down looking counterparts). As expected there was a line, but it moved quickly & the staff was friendly. I ordered 2 dozen paczki, and the next morning I realized they gave me flavors that I specifically requested be left out. As for the paczki themselves, I was extremely disappointed. The dough was tough, and the fillings were bland. All of the berry flavors tasted the same, the custard (bavarian creme?) wasn't very sweet & the butter cream tasted more like whipped cream than the frosting I expected. Although I was unhappy with the paczki, the rest of their offerings looked delicious and I will probably try something else from there in the future.

NMW is where we get our paczki every year. If you ask me (or anyone in my family) it ranks high above New Palace. Paczki Day is predictably insane, but it really is worth the wait. The line typically winds around the building (depending on how early or late you get there) and winds 3 deep in the narrow shop. It is advisable to write your paczki choices on a sheet of paper prior to getting up to the register. Be aware that you may not get your first choices as certain flavors are sure to sell out. I was disappointed that prune and apricot were temporarily sold out when I was there this year. I tried the buttercream for the first time last Tuesday and was pleasantly surprised. If you can, try some of the other bakery options. The cookies are great. It's a shame that most people are only there one day a year since NMW offers so many delicious cakes and pastries....If you're ever around town give it a try!

Walking in you can't help but just stare at the beautiful and plentiful cookies in the display case. Not one to really like those types of cookies, I was more drawn in by the cakes and brownies and fudge galore! Their cakes are really interesting because they are gigantic rectangles with a thick frosting that you see, so you don't get to peak at what the inside might look like. So it was a bit of a surprise... Just a side note for those of you who aren't used to Eastern Europeans. They can be hearty, and perhaps even come across as rude, but really they know what they're doing and you can carry on a conversation for hours. The woman got mad at me for taking a picture (and then went on to explain how people are so rude who come in talking on their phones so she doesn't like people to pop them out--okay that makes sense). I also wasn't really allowed to ask what was in certain brownies because "If I want to know the exact ingredients, I should work in the bakery." Okay...but I kinda want to know what's in a 7-layer brownie--I could be allergic to something. Just saying... -Mexican Wedding Cookie: mm it's very refreshing. It's very much like a shortbread with large chunks of nuts that mesh nicely with the powdered sugar. Yum -Lemon Butter Cookie: It's actually quite chewy, like there are chunks of nuts in here. You don't taste much lemon. It's a fine sugar-esque cookie. Just fine. -Carrot Cake: wow. Delicious. It has an overwhelming nutmeg flavor, but it works. The cake is so moist and it has a hard cream cheese frosting on top that is perfectly sugared. And I'm not a fan of raisins but I welcomed the mushy tenderness--seriously if you normally get your carrot cakes without raisins, still try this, it's delicious! Lots of fresh bites of carrot. So scrumptious. Maybe even a hint of pistachio? -Peanut Butter Brownie: ehh the brownie is really dry which is an issue since most of sweet is the brownie portion with a little peanut butter frosting on top. The PB frosting has a lot of flavor and the chocolate shavings really add to the wonderfulness of it. But you can skip it. -Brownie Cheesecake: wow is that decadent. It is so chocolate-y. There is what I believe to be a butter cream chocolate frosting atop a vanilla cake atop jam atop chocolate cheese cake. It's like eating straight fudge. But ya know what's weird? I wouldn't get it again (even though I had no trouble devouring it). Maybe it was just too much. FINAL VERDICT: Their cakes and brownies are what to get here. And who doesn't want to support a 90-year-old business? In fact, in their heyday, they used to close by 9AM because they would be sold-out. Crazy. Go here for the gooey stuff, otherwise head to the New Palace Bakery.

Let me state I did not actually consume any paczkis first. However my friend that I shipped them too said they were amazing! So I have a friend who lives in San Diego but used to live Downriver. She loves paczkis.I guess what they have to offer in San Diego is really just a jelly donut so not at all what she is used to. So she asked if I could order some. I waited till the last minute as always and could not get any shipped on Fat Tuesday. But the girl who answered the phone told me I should call back tomorrow and was very friendly even though you could tell the bakery was jamming. So Wednesday I called around noon to place my order. The woman who answered told me it was more economical to do a dozen instead of half, so I did. I did a mixed dozen, minus the prune. It was right around $24 for the paczkis and shipping. My friend got them the next day and was super happy. So thank you New Martha for making a Michigan girl who just happens to live on the West Coast extremely happy!

All the little lovelies in the window were calling my name..I just had to go in. All splayed out in their wonderful little shelves: cookies, cakes, eclairs, etc. The sweet little woman behind the counter handed me my gold..a baklava and a cannoli. I devoured them in mere minutes. Yum to the yum, yum. My bill was $3 measly dollars, totally worth it!

I grew up in the Thumb of Michigan and now reside in Texas. I have died looking for authentic Puczki's. In fact when I first moved here I went into the grocery store and asked the bakery if they had any and they didn't know what they were. I tried several bakeries and nobody knew what I was talking about. I call NMW bakery and just ordered a dozed to be shipped. The lady was very nice and I am anxiously waiting to dive into a realy treat. My only regret is that I cannot get them fresh. Thank you

After reading all the great reviews and being a lover of packis, I knew thsi needed to be on my must stop by list while in Detroit. Turns out, there was no need to go here. The lady was hostile and the treats all old and stale. The prices went from cheap at less than a buck a piece to overpriced at almost $4. The selection is huge, rows and rows of pastries of all sorts and I'm so glad that I refrained myself from getting too much. The eclaire was $1 which is more than fair but was old and stale with not enough custard. The choclate pecan bar even for a serious pecan lover was also not that great. Frosted butterfinger brownie tasted nothing like butterfinger, just a plain brownie. And for the chocolate peanut butter cookie, she gave me the lamest one with ONE!!!! chocolate chip and NO!! peanut butter chips, others looked better and this tasted like nothing. Lastly my husband wanted the chocolate pretzel which was also stale and sucked. Very dissapointing after all the great reviews!

I had such expectations for this bakery with a 4 star rating - tried some cookies and 4 different kinds of cake - after a bite of each, they went in the trash - an apple turnover with a sliver of apple and lots of dry flavorless pastry -won't be back :(

Paczki schmaczki! You can keep them because the NMW shines when it comes to cake. Try a slice of sheet cake, which come in assorted flavors. One slice hardly a commitment doth make.

MW Bakery does a whole array of confections, including wedding cakes. One of the things many may know them for is for their paczkis... I thought that the paczki craze was just a suburban thing - if I were to get up early enough, before any of the Hamtramck tourists could make it, then I could sneak into MWB, grab a dozen paczkis and slip back to my flat before I was mugged for them. I was wrong. At 8am people begin lining up around the block. It took about an hour to get in and out, which sounded pretty standard from everyone else in line. It's always great to hear that someone's been buying this or that from a particular store for XX years. It's a great way to bring in customers, you know? So I got home with a mixed box of paczkis, and every single one of them EXCEPT THE PRUNE paczki was delicious. The prune... well that's to be expected to taste horrible, so I can't complain. If you're gonna spend fat tuesday waiting in line for some fried goodness, then I suggest you do it here. They make really really good paczkis.

I use to go here every morning as a young kid going to middle school. Everything is so cheap, yet it flavor is amazing! 10 years passed before I went here again since I moved. The lady has incredible memory and I was amazed by her recognizing me. They have great donuts and panzkis! I'm sure everything else is amazing. Would def recommend to anyone that wants the best baked products.

Bought my paczki there last night. As good as ever. Two dozen went in about 14 minutes here at work. Two thumbs up.
