May's is one of the main reasons I miss living in Ferndale. I'm still only about 15 minutes away but that has changed my weekly visits to more or less monthly visits. May's is hands down my favorite Thai place. As another review mentioned, their potato curry ("Kang Kalee" or more simply... number 12) is the best I've ever had. There is something magical they do with the potatoes so that they are just slightly crispy on the edges. Every single one, every time. I've tried to do this at home time and time again and just can't figure it out. Though I religiously get the potato curry (chicken, medium) I have tried other dishes and they are all good. My girlfriend always gets the Broccoli Beef and she loves it. Sure the interior is nothing particularly nice. You get served on a tray with a Styrofoam dish and plastic utensils and the place may be a tad grimy, but it doesn't bother me at all. If it bothers you, get it to go! Whatever you do, give May's a shot. The staff is always friendly, it's tasty and cheap. Don't forget... cash only.

Many food-babies have been made here! But seriously, May's is a great place for some tasty Thai food that is priced just right! What the decor and dining room is lacking is definitely forgiven when one experiences the food. I've mainly had the noodle dishes here, the curry noodles are my favorite so far. I've also tried the potato curry which is so so so good! I've also had the crab rangoons which were ok but I probably will skip from now on...I think I'll stick to the spring rolls for appitizer eating. I will definitely return, and return often! Heads-up:::: cash only :::::

Wow, they are fast and leave a lasting impression!!! My wife just got a food born illness from this place. Vibrio is not your friend... Avoid the shrimp! ;o) To be fair, I had the Pad C Ew. It was OK, nothing great. I'd rather spend a couple dollars more at Tongue Thai'd or Siam Spicy. Both are better tasting and offer a bacteria free experience!

Not the cleanest or biggest place but good food for a good price. Love the kang kalee!

I only ever order the Pad Se-ew, Cury Tofu or Fried Rice. This joint has the best Thai Food in Ferndale, hands down. I've only ever had one bad meal here, and I've been going for 8 years. When I'm hungry for Thai, I'm hungry for May's. I don't know what sort of crack they lace their food with but it's sort of addicting. They recently painted and spruced the place up a bit.

Very easy carryout, pretty reasonably priced. Ordered the pad sew and a side order of fried rice for only $2. This place is clearly family run, which I always appreciate. The pad sew was high quantity and good chicken, but too sweet for my liking. Fried rice is a great deal that you can't beat for $2. They have 4 or 5 jugs of water for free fill ups. Order came super quickly and the two sisters who bagged up my meal were sweet. Will return for carryout.

Very poor Pad Thai. My wife had the tofu version, and I had the chicken. Under-cooked noodles, hotter than what we asked for, taste wasn't classic Pad-Thai, and It was swimming in some kind of juice/sauce. If you can't get Pad-Thai right, I think it's time to re-train, or try another genre of food.

It's the best cheap Thai I've ever tasted. The vegetables are fresh and the meat is always cooked to perfection. The spices are incredible and delicately balanced, and the portions are huge. Yeah, it's not the best decor, and the cutlery is plastic...but I've never felt like that takes away from the experience. I also appreciate the pitchers of water on the counter for everyone to serve themselves from--you'll need them, as even the medium is pretty spicy. The folks behind the counter are friendly and love their repeat customers. And they finally started taking credit cards! Woohoo!

I beg to differ that the food is authentic..In fact it could have been the worst Thai I had. Everything tasted the same, like sodium glutamate (msg). We ordered two different chicken dishes and they were nearly identical: simply very salty. Maybe I'm just picky, I had a lot of different Thai selections in my lifetime so my tastes are rather refined. Salty doesn't cut it for me, I need to taste the ginger, veggies, spices.. I feel like they were scarce on meat. Dining room smelled and was very humid. Dining furniture wasn't the cleanest and the front service wasn't the nicest. Others seem to like it, but I don't think I will return. Sorry! :(

Family run authentic Thai restaurant with delicious food, large quantities and amazing spice, so why only 3 stars? Our food was made in a quick one-dish-at-time fashion so in a party of five, there was about a 20 minute lag time between when the first entrée came out and the last (and to be honest, the last dish was sort of forgotten until we reminded them of it). So we weren't really able to eat together. Not a big fan of the styrofoam cups, plates and plastic forks (where were the chopsticks?) but that's a side note. If you can ignore these details, you'll find the food is of high quality and at a low cost. My drunken noodles were nicely flavored with juicy meat and some nice veggies. My significant other got curry chicken at the same 'medium' spice level but his was WAY more firey! Our Thai iced-tea was perfect. I love the names of some of their menu items like the '#7 Kiss Me Beef' which has been on the menu ever since the previous owners had it. I'd definitely give this place another try!

I tried this place a couple of times and found it to be pretty good. The food is somewhat comparable to most Thai places around Detroit, maybe not as great as higher end places, but not much worse. I had the Cashew Chicken and Sweet/Sour Chicken. Both were good. Spice was just right. The best deal is the price. At $7, it's the cost of McDonalds. Cheaper than most Thai places. Only drawback is parking in Ferndale or getting a pick up. On a Friday or Saturday night, good luck. If picking up, you have to park in the back street (not legally) because there's no where else to park w/in 100 yards. Just be quick, in and out, and you'll be ok. Inside is okay for dining in.

This is probably the best thai you can get in the 'burbs if you ask me. Straight forward, good thai food with reasonable pricing. The food is great, the restaurant space itself isn't great for eating in, but this is the thai takeout place to go to without a doubt. I'm withholding the 5th star because they need to invest in plastic containers--you always end up with half of your sauce in the bag and that's no good. Plastic locking containers would make this spot a shoe in for five stars. Also, please deliver!

  • Damian G.

Mistake made in the order, and was told I ordered "Curry Chicken". Problem was, I ordered by the meal number. Then was instructed to bemore careful. If you can't take the time to ensure service, then I won't take the time to call your restaurant.

First time having Thai food and it was great. I got the spicy sweet and sour chicken. I appreciate that the cook explained to be beforehand that the chicken was not breaded and fried like Chinese restaurant ax I honestly didn't know. I got the dish anyway to try something new. Very good. I added Sriracha and it was very spicy! I love spice so that was even better.

My coworkers have been talking about May's forever, so yesterday I thought I'd give them a try for lunch yesterday. Here's the breakdown: The good: The food was pretty tasty, overall. I ordered chicken pad thai, medium spicy. The spice was on point - enough for a slow burn, not enough to set my mouth on fire. Portion sizes were generous, more than enough for 2 meals. The meal was ready in about 5 minutes (I dined in). The dining room was small but clean. The bad: It was kind of done cafeteria style - you order and pick up at the counter. Your food comes out on a styrofoam plate, with plastic cutlery. No big deal, as I'm not the fussy type; but this is definitely more of a casual lunch stop, as opposed to a fancy night out sort of place. My Diet Coke came in a can, which was no biggie, but I would have preferred a fountain pop instead. Here's the thing that's been bugging me since I ate there: my food smelled weird. Not bad, just...weird. I hesitantly took my first bite, and it tasted fine. But still; - what was with that smell? It was a little unnerving. I might eat here again. The verdict is still out.

I just got May's carry out for the first time in a few months and I didn't like it as much as I remembered, sadly. The dish came out fast (awesome) and sadly didn't include everything I asked for on it (didn't realize til I got home) it was spicier than I remember even though still ordering it mild, and overall the flavor was only OK. Strangely enough though everything was less than I remember- the chicken in the dish was better than I remember- less dry. I'll probably try again soon since it was so good the first few times I ate there, but this time I was not impressed. PS- spring roll was still awesome!

  • Rachael J.

Ordered a take out of Four Season - a seafood combo. Food was prepared quickly and correct which is always a plus. It's super cheap too - meals tend to vary between $7 - $8.50 although you get what you pay for. While the food looked fresh and you get a great portion size (enough for two meals) the big downer was how much it lacked any kind of flavor, it was so bland. That blandness may put me off returning in the future.

My favorite potato curry (and one of my favorite meals in general) on planet earth. I don't care what anyone's foodie opinions are... This is pure deliciousness.

  • Caleb Y.

My wife and I were very pleased with the quality of the Thai food here! We enjoyed very much. The dishes were prepared on the spot and were very good. The wait was not long. The negatives: The price seemed a little high The food was a little greasy. Overall, I am glad this is close to my home!

  • J R.

Outstanding Pad Tai. Don't be fooled into going to the similarly named Tai place in Ferndale. This one is the real deal. Great for take out as well with portions for 2 people.

    (5)
  • Virginia C.

This is more than just a hole in the wall- but I like this kind of stuff. So don't be deceived by the Jersey Subway/Hoagie shop appearance, go in and try the Pad Thai. The food is served on cheap plastic when you eat in- so grab 2 forks, because half way through the meal it will break on you.

  • Zach D.

I'm not the type of guy who will make a fuss about a hair in my food. At all. That being said it happens here consistently. Almost every time I've ever been. The last straw was when my friend was eating and found a pile... Yes, a pile, of hair in his food. Also the quality and taste of the food has dropped significantly over the years.

Fantastic Thai cuisine and very affordable prices. Great for takeout or a quick dine-in. Highly recommend the Kang Kalee!

  • The Critic C.

Best Thai potato curry ever. This place has been serving the exact same tasting food for probably over 20 years. That is a good thing, because I would not change any of it. Prices are so cheap, I always order two dinners and take one home. One thing that is very important to mention is that this place is BYOF, or Bring Your Own Fork. All they have are these TERRIBLE, tiny plastic forks that look like they are for children. You will go out of your mind with frustration trying to eat your super delicious food with these miniature torture devices. My recommendation, seriously... bring your own fork, you will thank me. Best Thai food ever... Go getchu a number 12, tonight!

  • Samir N.

Murrican-sized servings of good Thai food? Yes please!!! The food is reasonably priced considering you will get two meals out of it. I followed Juston M's advice and went with chicken on the potato curry. That was a win. The potatoes were delicious in the curry. The chicken gave it a bit of protein. They were super quick, too. I ordered while I was walking up the street and my order was ready within 10 minutes or so. I am 2 for 2 on Thai food in Ferndale!

Best. Thai. Food. Ever!! I get the potato curry every time (potatoes extra crispy) Very friendly staff and great prices!!

I was trying to get into Public House but it doesn't open until Monday so a quick glance around and I ended up across the street at May's for a late lunch. After Samir's review and my new found love of Sy Thai I've been meaning to try this place hoping to find something as tasty in Ferndale. I looked over the menu and decided on the Chicken Curry, extra spicy. My food was ready in about 5 minutes and I was out the door $7 later. Once I got into the box I immediately loved the spiciness and the heat of this dish, they delivered there. The chicken was thin sliced and it came with green peppers, bamboo and mushrooms alongside steamed rice. I did notice that the spice mix was mainly a powder and it left the sauce grainy but still tasty. I would also have liked some snap peas or baby corn with the veggies and the amount of chicken was a little sparse but I liked what I ordered. It wasn't nearly as good as Sy Thai with it's coconut and peanut flavors building onto the curry but for a small shoppe I'd hit this place up again. Get past the dinge of this place and give it a try to see what you think. I'll be back for some more of their menu.

Looks dirty and dingy (and it kinda is) but the food is GREAT! Been eating here for 10 years and will continue to come for ever

This place is located in a nice area of town, from the appearance of the place, you would maybe just walk by and go to the next Thai restaurant up the road, but all and all this is really a nice Thai restaurant. The decor was something that could be passed, I just took my food to go. Food was great for the price, and it was pretty plentiful. I received a whole plate of drunken noodle for 7.50 a deal that just really couldn't be beat for a nice afternoon lunch.

  • Jacquie T.

May's can whip up some pretty tasty Thai food, but don't let the interior scare you. If you didn't know any better you might take one look inside and walk back out. In fact, I'm guessing you've walked right past this place on your jaunt down 9 Mile. But I highly suggest you give this place a try -- at least for carry-out. Their menu size is decent and includes many Thai staples (kang kalee is my go-to dish). You can get any dish as a "combo", which includes fried rice (instead of white), a fried chicken wing and soup (usually hot and sour or sizzling rice). Portions are great and everything dish I've had has been perfectly spiced. And you can't beat the price! Your dinner/lunch/snack will set you back about $6. I would suggest avoiding the self-serve jar-o'-chili-sauce at the end of the counter though. It's essentially a locking glass jar with a plastic spoon inside. You ladle your own sauce into a mini plastic cup. I'm not sure whose hands dip into that jar, and I'd rather not have that co-mingle with something I'm going to put on my food. Beware, May's only accepts cash.

When I visit Detroit from the East Coast, I make it a point to always stop by May's and snag the best Curry Chicken I've ever tasted. I would easily pay twice as much for the same food.

  • Tanya M.

My go to Thai restaurant! Not only are they cheap, but they're good! Pad See Ew and Pak Pak are our favorites and they only come in at whopping $13 total for both...YES $13 total!! Hubby eats all of his, but I always have enough leftover for lunch the next day. Spice level is not too bad and I always go medium, which only causes a minor nose run.. oh yeah and bring cash, because they don't take cards :)

Thai Quest Twenty Ten continues. I figured I needed to knock out May's Bangkok Express since it's so close. I wish it had knocked me out instead, but it didn't. My friends called this Five Dollar Thai when I moved here (the other one in Ferndale being Monkey Paw Thai). Then the prices increased and it changed to Six Dollar Thai. Now I think it's even more. I walked into the empty restaurant for lunch. I got a menu and was looking at it. I was waiting for someone to come, but no one did. I craned my head to look in the back and I saw somebody sleeping. I tried to make some noise to wake him up, but he didn't and no one came. I looked at the menu and it was about $7 for an entree so I said screw it and I left. I don't really need to go back to this place.

May's has the best Thai food, bar none! Get the pineapple curry with beef, it would probably my last meal if I were facing eminent doom.

  • Mitch A.

OK. We couldn't stay away. I finally decided to update my review since we've started going back, and I don't like the idea of looking like a hypocrite. Most of the food here is really good. Since their kitchen area looks clean, we've decided since we just can't stand the dirty look of the dining room, we always phone in our order and pick it up quickly without looking around the restaurant. Kind of an odd decision to make, but we really like their pad thai and pineapple curry. Their "hot and sour" soup (odd name since Its closer to Tom Yum) is full of flavor, but pretty chintzy on ingredients. Still, I find myself ordering it more often than not. ***But I DO still wish you'd replace that disgusting trash can and get the carpet cleaned.

nom, nom, nom. i'm currently carbing up on potato curry from may's for the detroit free press marathon (on a relay, this fat girl can't run 23 miles) and writing this review. i always went to bangkok cafe in ferndale because it was convenient and i liked the decor better. may's looks like a bum put it together. my friend introduced me to may's one day and told me i must have the potato curry. i don't think its on the menu either. actually it is, i just didn't think it would be called kang kalee. well, forget all that and order the potato curry (i add chicken). its sauce is creamy and really well spiced. the potatoes, amazing. i also think they are just frozen crinkle cut potatoes elevated to legendary status. this meal is so darn good. i can't tell you how good it is. everyone who eats it becomes a convert. like potato nuns, sworn to eat potatoes in creamy curry sauce. i have eaten the same meal three times this week alone. plus it only costs 6 dollars for a dinner. that's it. 6 dollars even. best deal evah! love, juston.

Finally tried May's after going to nearly every Thai place of note all over Michigan. As a connoisseur of Red Curry sauce the Pad Ped did live up to the hype. No question the best ever! Only Magic Thai now closed was the same. The Potato Curry #12 made with the same sauce is also the best ever! The portions are not that big but I would pay $20 for an order of #9 any day. 3/19/14

The combination of fresh/fast Thai combined with super cheap prices have made me a fan of Mays for over 10 years. Dishes start at $6 and range to $7.50-seafood/pad thai. My favorite dish is the Chicken Curry, with pineapple. The red curry that they use is unmatched by anyone in the area. Simply delicious. This is a hot spot for take out. I do suggest switching it up and eating in. I realize its nowhere near fancy. However I support the comment that you get more food when you eat in. A HUGE plate. Bring Cash only. Sadly they are closed on Sundays.

This place has been around for a long time. It used to be about $5.00 bucks for a huge plate of food on a paper plate. Now most things on the menu are about $7.00 bucks. If you want something to drink they only offer canned pop. I have only ate the pad thai and the curry noodles. They are ok. I am in Ferndale often & a friend of mine just loves this place. I think it is because the portions are huge & it is close to our house. Honestly two people could split a meal. The inside of this place has not changed in the past 10 years. I also think the same stains on the carpet have not been cleaned nor vaccumed in the past 10 years. It is kinda icky looking inside...They might want to hire a cleaning service it might do wonders for their business. :) The curry noodles and the pad thai sauce is very runny but it does taste better the next day.....LOL Overall huge portions and the food is ok & it is close to my house. :)

How much do I love May's? I used to come down Ferndale from almost an hour away to go to May's Bangkok Express, although at the time I only knew it as $5 Thai. While now $6-7 Thai might be more appropriate, you can't find a better value for the quality and quantity of food you receive. I've never had a bad thing on the menu, but I honestly haven't had half of it because it takes a great surge of will power to get anything other than potato curry chicken. I believe the menu calls it 'Kang Kalee,' but don't take my word for it. Just order potato curry chicken, and whether or not you think you have an addictive personality, you'll be back. I feel I must defend the environment of May's, as that seems to be the biggest complaint. May's is very small. I think you can order soft drinks, but most people just pour a glass of water from the pitcher at the counter. The dinnerware is all Styrofoam and plastic. Aside from a few pictures on the wall, there aren't many decorations. If you are looking for a dim, romantic setting with waiters available for every whim, this isn't the place. If you are looking to have a few beers and catch a game, this isn't the place. If you are looking for no frills amazing Thai food (potato curry chicken!) at a great price, head over to May's Bangkok Express. NOTICE: They only accept cash!

  • Alivia Z.

I have friends who absolutely must have their Bangkok Express when visiting Michigan. I always get the #9 and #12 with tofu, medium hot. I'm not remembering which is which right now but one is a red curry with potato and the other is a yellow curry with eggplant. Both are delicious and only $6 each. The best kind of fast food, this isn't fine dining but piping hot, wok-flavored goodness. They get the tofu and eggplant nicely browned with that smokey hot-oil-in-a-wok taste. Definitely worth checking out if you like Thai flavors. Cash only!!! I deduct one star because they use so much styrofoam. Please, Bangkok Express, please start using paperboard or something recyclable! My city's recycling doesn't take styrofoam =(

The owner tried to throw me and my service dog out. I tried to explain ADA law, he was in his working harness and she still tried to throw us out until I threatened to call the police. I will never go back again. Go to BANGKOK CAFE!

We were pleasantly surprised after ending up at Bangkok Express as a last resort. Originally headed to BW3's, the line there was out the door but the money was already in the meter and we didn't want to walk too far in the rain with the baby (WHEW!). So May's Bangkok Express was it. As I said, we were pleasantly surprised by the food. I had the beef with broccoli, and I believe hubby had general's chicken. Since he's used to most places going light on the spice, he got a little wake up call with his medium spiced dish. The side of veggie fried rice we got for our toddler was a very generous portion. She loved it, but she usually does love anything with rice. If you'd like some of her leftovers, they're probably still along the wall and under where her high chair was. (Sorry! :( ) There were high chairs available - yay! But no changing table in the restrooms - boo! And I believe they now have an extra sippy cup on hand since we made it home without ours....

Show me a clean, tidy, well kept Thai food restuarant and I'll show you a bad Thai food restaurant. Its kind of a mark of good thai food to be in a dingy outdated storefront. Mays is good. Whenever I think about whether a restaurant is good I think to myself, I paid $7 for this. Is it worth $7? And the answer here is yes. Enough food for dinner and lunch, quick, mildly friendly, and just good. Plain and simple. Try the pad see ew. Its a keeper. And I feel ashamed just typing this but the Crab Rangoons....lord have mercy. The best youll ever have. Also molten lava hot on the inside so be careful. Youve been warned.

  • Michael E.

It's cheap, consistent and the staff is friendly, which is a plus. The food is nothing special- it's the kind of bland Americanized-Thai that's taking over Thai food in this country much as most Chinese food served here is what Calvin Trillin called "lumps in brown sauce." If you don't mind eating mediocre take-out food on Styrofoam plates, it's okay, but there's better food and ambiance across the street for a dollar more.

I still love you May's. Even with your raised prices (the bad economy is a killer, huh?), I stilllllllll love you. Anything I've ever tried has been delicious. The portions are HUGE and the prices are still reasonable. One of the girls there has quite the attitude-it's endearing to me, but others may not agree. They also spruced the place up a bit (translation: they painted and added some wood panel stuff to the walls). Now those of you who were afraid of its shabbiness have NO EXCUSE!

  • Andy L.

Very reasonable prices, huge portions, quick service and amazing flavor. This family owned and operated gem has won numerous newspaper accolades (they have 'em posted by the register). Dishes I've had that figuratively (and sometimes literally when I order them at the Hot spice level) blew me away: Curry Noodle, Pad Thai, Drunken Noodle Also, if you have ever enjoyed crab Rangoon, try it here. Trust me, they do it so well its hard to put into words. TIP: Eat in, I'm pretty sure you get a bit more food, though this is by no means a guarantee. CASH ONLY! I always forget, so be prepared!

Mother MAY I eat at May's? Well yes you certainly should... Directly on the 9 mile strip in Ferndale, this pleasant palate percolator serves up some of the best budget Thai. Don't let the "budget Thai" comment steer you away-- it's actually fantastic in taste. I ordered the beef pad thai medium spice-- It was preeeetty spicy, but I was told that normally medium spice isn't that spicy. The meat actually tasted like beef and not your typical chewy beef impostor that you can find at some Chinese takeouts. Another favorite is the pineapple curry chicken dish. Also best ordered medium spice. The atmosphere inside is fairly well defined by the name of the joint-- May's Bangkok EXPRESS... It does have seating inside and a decent amount, but I think it's best as a grab and go. quick note: on the sign, the May's is written small, so the name you'll actually look for is Bangkok Express. sounds pretty simple, but somehow I managed to miss it. three times.

ok, prices plus quality this place cant really be beat. Flavors are not as strong as sy thai in birmingham but still really good. More of a carryout but it does have some tables to sit at inside. Only had one bad meal here out of like 50 lol... I had to repost this because this restaurant has two listing the other is under bangkok express...soups are good here along with wings and crab rangs etc...

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city.
