There's nothing I can say but good things about this place. Its a nice formal setting with delicious food that's not your standard fair, at prices that wont break the bank. The menu is under priced for the taste, but understandable due to being in a rural area. We has the lasagna and walleye Creole. The lasagna was to die for. I can't remember the last time I've had lasagna that tasted so good. The walleye creole pasta was great too but slightly messy to eat. Will definitely come back next time we're in town.
My boyfriend and I went on a Thursday and there were only two other tables there, both large parties. The service was terribly slow, they messed up our order, and we were constantly reminded that everything was so slow because there was a table of 14 in front of us.
Fantastic! My hubby had heard it was good but we hadn't been there. We were headed to Toledo and needed a meal. Decided to give it a whirl. wWOWw is all I can say! Being in such a rural place we didn't expect that! When got to our destination we both were telling people they have to Go! Yummy and atmosphere is great!
Very good burgers. Great service. Kid friendly. Watched the Belmont Stakes while we ate...they turned up the tv volume for us so we could listen as well. We liked it.
Changed dramatically with new owners. Place was empty last night and very slow service. Raised prices have destroyed our desire to return to our weekly haunt. 3.99 to add fries and coleslaw to a sandwich. Buffalo burger went from 6.50 to 7.25, which only includes the bun. Add .75 for lettuce, tomato, and onion. So sad to see such a great family restaurant go down hill so quickly.
OMG freakin' buffalo burger is so good. You'll sell yer momma for this stuff! Outrageously delicious. Tender, juicy, perfect. Better than an ordinary burger. Get a tarp, put it on the tarp and roll in it like a dog, it IS that good. Prices are average, not overly expensive, not cheap, but on par for this kind of food.
First, I need to pose a question to myself and the readers of Yelp. How many restaurants have you driven by a thousand times, and said to yourself "I really need to check that place out sometime?" Holy mother of god, what an epically pleasant surprise we experienced today. After years of keeping Angelo's on our "we need to go there someday" list, we finally took the plunge. As we entered the enormous main dining room, I was struck with the feeling I was walking into a time capsule. Not of a specific bygone era, but rather several bygone eras perfectly mashed up. Mobster era touches, mixed with 80's excess and some minor contemporary luxury notes to top it off. The vintage 80's wallpaper is uh-mazing. Dark blue hues with tiling geometric patterns and flowers. Mirrors everywhere reflect not only the wallpaper, but the gorgeous chandeliers and the bizarro bronze dome like thing in the middle of the ceiling. Seriously... the atmosphere is stunning, striking and not like anywhere else. The napkins are even fanned out in the glasses. Off in the distance, we saw a room that clearly inhabits live music on the weekends. There was a disco ball I really would have loved to have seen lit up. There was 80's radio playing in the background. Everything was a little off, but worked so well together. I can't wait to go back on a friday to see the place packed with people and a live band. For the food? It was perfect! Some of the items, like the side salads and complementary bread were pretty average and un-surprising. The "flaming cheese" was not the same Saganaki we find at greek restaurants in Toledo. No, this was a thinner softer piece of cheese that I suspect was simply mozz. It's hard to tell after it's been flamed with booze, but it was good. My wife's steak was excellent. She got a petit filet and really liked it. She's not one for mushrooms, but she ate all of the ones served on top. She likes her steak well done, ordered it medium well... and next time probably will just order medium. And my veal? Easily some of the best veal I've ever had. I ordered the "Veal Ducale." Milk fed veal sauteed with butter, shitaki mushrooms, prosciutto and walnuts served in a brandy bleu cheese sauce. It was as good as it sounds. Like seriously. I ate every bite, and even lapped up a bit of the sauce awkwardly with my fork because I couldn't get enough. This place is unlike anywhere else on earth. The food is solid and the atmosphere is unique and memorable. The service is good, and the location is so unexpected (just over the border in Michigan from toledo, surrounded by fields.) If you live in Toledo and love unique experiences, you have to check this place out.
Great food! I had the lasagna and omg it was amazing! A very classy touch of perfection! Great service! Macy M. Duluth, GA Sofo Foods Atlanta
So decided to give them another try after a 3 hr wait with a reservation on New Years Eve. Thought maybe it was just the holiday. Made a reservation today. Never again!!! When we arrived we were told an hour wait to just sit down....with a RESERVATION!! After more than an hour we walked out. They have ruined a good restaurant with horrible management!! Never again!!
River Cafe is our favorite summer restaurant. We come back many times a summer for several reasons. My husband loves the perch and I love the imperial shrimp dinner. The special salads are always the best with creative combinations topped with homemade dressings - unbeatable! Most of all we love sitting on the patio enjoying the view, which is often of the sun setting, in such a relaxed atmosphere. They also have a special deal for your birthday!!
We really love this place, and have been driving up to point place to have seafood for years. It's clear after only a couple of visits, that most of the regulars are neighborhood people. Grab a table for two, in the corner, and enjoy the people watching as well as the nature / river watching. During warmer months, sitting outside on the deck can be a lovely experience. The food is basic, covering fried lake perch, lots of shrimp options, burgers etc. They have some nice apps including a fried artichoke we love. I've pretty much always gone with the Seafood platter (perch, shrimp & scallops with two sides) and have always enjoyed it. Last night I ordered the same, after a winter hiatus from visits and something had changed. The food was prepared much nicer than previous visits. Instead of generic frozen vegetable sides, the zucchini was delicately prepared, and the fried seafood seemed to have gotten some sort of upgrade in cooking process. Not greasy at all with a great thin crust. My wife tried the sliders which were HUGE (way more food than we expected) and I gladly munched on some of her fries. The fries are really good, with a batter that adds lots of flavor and texture. The river Cafe is a great hole in the wall type place, with a lovely view of the Ottawa river. It's location, just over the border in michigan, and just a windy enough of a drive for most that it's too out of the way, makes it a great place to enjoy a nice meal while feeling like you're taking a break from the city of Toledo that is literally feet away.
Usually enjoy coming here with my family. Tonight though service was terrible!! Not really sure if we'll go back. My food had a mistake. Waitress came around while I was in the restroom and my husband mentioned it to her. She took it away. I did not get a replacement AND it was still on my bill. I realized I was charged after she cashed me out. Waited a bit too ask her about it and she never came back around. I just have up because the mistake is causing me severe digestion problems... Yeah, usually this is a good place to go, though after tonight I think we're staying away for a while... I'll second guess myself if we ever come back here again...
1 star is a stretch. Just don't care for this place. Have ordered several things on the menu & never cared for any of it. I have a friend in Toledo & this is their favorite mexican Restaurant. She always wants to eat @ this place when we go out. I actually did not eat the last 2 times we went. Hope she gets the hint & finds another favorite, because I would never have to go back :-(
Your average run of the mill gringo restaurant. Decent portions but taste was very bland. My friend in Toledo ranted and raved about this place but only thing I can rave about is the salsa and fried ice cream. Food is not very authentic. The margaritas were pricey and not authentic either. Having lived in so-cal and been to Mexico, I would not say this place impressed me. Service was slow but expected on a weekend night. Please turn up the heat and the flavors atleast!
