UPDATE (5/4/2015): Zef's is closed. Their landlord did not renew their lease, and April 30, 2015 was their last day of business. This business has been replaced by First National Grille. It's a shame, too. Zef's was a good place. They still have a Midtown location on Woodward; I'll have to stop by and see if the food is as good, though its location obviously means I can't get lunch there during a workday.

Went to have breakfast this morning only to see they were replaced by a flashy new restaurant. Dan Gilbert strikes again ~ Squeezing out the mom and pops. Loved the place! Wont be going to the new place just on principle so sick of the little guy being replaced!

Zefs has great food but I was just there for lunch, sat down in a booth with 3 people and they told us we couldn't sit in the booth because it was for four people, instead woe would need to wait 10 or so minutes for a different table to open up while that one day there empty. I mean 10 mins isn't bad but wouldn't you want paying customers eating food rather than ghost people paying ghost money?

It's your standard, run of the mill Coney. It's not National, it's not Lafayette...but if you're in the area and have to have something to eat now Now NOW...then this fits the basic requirements. It's not the best, it's not the worst, it's just "present".

As far as coney islands go, Zef's has all of the important items on the menu... Coneys, fries, chicken pita- all the old stand bys. Zef's is around the corner from my work, so whenever my coworkers and I want to stress-eat something bad for us, Zef's is quick and convenient. Although I like their chili sauce, I can't say I have ever been wowed by anything that comes out of their kitchen. The worst was today- I ordered Chili Cheese Fries, which comes, to my horror, slathered in Cheese Whiz. Now maybe there is a whole faction that prefers Whiz to the real stuff, but I, for one, really prefer good old cheddar cheese. Hell, even though it is processed to hell, I will even take a slice of American cheese! But Whiz is the worst. Also, in comparison to other spots (and as we all know, there are PLENTY of coney islands to compete with), Zef's prices are a little high for the quality of food, and you don't usually get fries with the cost of the food, at best, you have to pay $.85 for CHIPS. What is this abomonation!?!

Great for lunch. It's always packed on business days. If live downtown and need a Saturday or Sunday hangover breakfast, come here.

I like Zef's! Working downtown and searching for a coney that had more on the menu than American and Lafayette offer - I was turned off by Zef's reviews but tried it anyway. And I went back many times. Their breakfast items aren't my favorite of coney's but service is decent, and really fast -- what I do love is their chicken finger pita and greek salads - both great! I am picky about both those items - as any Metro Detroiter should be - and they win! Really good. If you work downtown it's very fast for lunch carryout or dine in - I would definitely recommend it if you got a hankering for coney.

The chicken greek salad here is fabulous--I try to get it at least once a month! Not to mention incredible customer service. Jessica is the best-- she is thoughtful and accommodating, even for carry-out orders.

Definately wont be going back or recommending this restaurant to anyone. Got placed at a table in front of a door and the handle was in my back. Then when I received my food they was hair in it and when I told the server she told me that no one in the kitchen has that texture hair. Are you kidding me, what bad customer service. The whole meal should have been made over. The meal I did eat wasnt good either. Wouldn't reccommend for anyone.

Just an update - I have added a star. I have gone back several times since my initial review. They have improved greatly since my first visit. Try their gyro Greek salad, it is really good.

Sorry to say Zef's is officially off the list. Went there yesterday to pick up carryout for the office. Turkey on wheat - happy customer BLT wrap with chips - happy customer Zef'sStartup - Bleck! The fried foods were added to the styrofoam container as soon as they came out of the fryer - meaning that they melted into the styrofoam. By the time I got back to the office (1/2 block) all of the cheese from the moz sticks had oozed out of them and became one with the container. I called to complain and a very nice and helpful manager said that she remembered me and would credit my lunch. So I happily told my co-workers about that and we decided to go there for lunch today dine in. Grilled ham and cheese - good but wierd since it had lettuce mayonaise and tomato on it but it was pretty good. Club sandwhich - Nice sandwhich but the entire thing was covered in potato chips literally covered. Turkey sandwich on wheat ordered - My coworker recieved a grilled chicken sandwhich on a hamburger bun. When she pointed this out the waitress said no you ordered chicken. No she didn't! So my coworker decided to try the chicken and said it was tough and overcooked. She asked the waitress to replace it with her original turkey sandwhich order. When it finally arrived it looked fine but then on her second bite she found a hair! There are too many places in the D to explore to bother with this one again. Three strikes you are out!

I go to the same place everyday for lunch and that is Zef's Coney Island on Woodward. I've never been more satisfied with a coney island before. Their salads are amazing which is the complete opposite from other spots in downtown. The chicken is phenomenal. So tender and you can tell its prepared fresh and i was told by the manager that it is marinated and prepared fresh daily. I do receive a little attitude from the waitstaff during their rush hour but i completely understand because i look over and i see 3 people prepare, what it looks like, 100 carryout orders. It can get a bit frustrating and thats why i can completely understand. Downtowners are also amazing. The cornbeef tastes so good. Their homemade greek dressing is to die for. There has been a few mistakes but its fixed right away, mistakes happen all the time. I love this place. It deserves 5 stars. I will not go to any other coney especially not Woodward Coney- eek!
