A friend brought us here for the first time last night. I hadn't heard of Toms before. He warned us how it looked like it was going to fall down. Just as the other reviewers stated, once inside, the people are super friendly and there are more stories than days in the year. Top five dive bar. This is the reason to go. Forget prices, selection, decor. People come here to drink with friends and swap stories. We went because there was live music, which apparently occurs regularly but not every week. Get on the email list. Ron is as friendly as they say. Looking forward to going back!

What can I say about Tom's... Well first off, for dive bar aficionados, Tom's Tavern should be atop or close to the top of your global dive bar bucket list. It is an experience more than a destination. This place looks from the outside like it was transplanted from a Mogadishu shanty slum. Granted, it's current home on 7 Mile Detroit is about as close domesticly as you want to get to a war zone. And it still sticks out like a bloody thumb amongst sore thumbs. Personally, I can't believe it hasn't been shut down by some over zealous safety inspector. Although it wouldn't suprise me if they just pick the place up and move it via pickup truck every time they catch wind of a possible inspection. It's that small. Now this place is tiny from the outside. I've walked completely around it and know it's small, But in some sort of demension warping black magic of Harry Potter tent proportions, when you get inside you find an oddly spacious bar with modest seating, a stage area, bathrooms and bar all framed in some impressive DIY stucco work. Don't try and wrap your mind around this, you will fail. I'm pretty sure most scientific knowledge we have on blackholes comes from studying Tom's. The bar.... Well it leans very left.... No, this isnt some haven of socialism for Ferndale Hipsters... I mean the whole bar top slants to the left so bad you will be chasing your beer bottle down it if it gets wet. It's very funhouse-esq Does it have an amazing tap list? No, it has none to my recollection. If you want taps, go a couple miles northeast to One Eye Betty's (you're welcome) Tom's has bottles of beer that are cold, cheap and delicious. Does it have food? They have pretzels sometimes.... Well there is actually a kitchen in this alternate dimension, but I'm pretty sure this place is not permitted to serve food. One of the "owners" can whip up some pretty amazing food sometimes for fun that may be shared if you're there at the right time, and they like you, but I wouldn't make dinner plans for here. Does it have an odd amount of Babe Ruth stuff hanging on the walls and ceiling? Yes... yes it does. You want to know why? come here and ask... Which brings me to the best thing Tom's Tavern has. Stories. This place is full of great stories. Come, drink, ask and enjoy. Find out why the entire floor leans a good 10 degrees. Find out why it's a shrine to Babe Ruth. Find out why I'm not even sure anyone actually owns this place... It's a modern day marvel of mysteries. Now if you do venture here and find a pad locked plywood door and think: "Man, it must be closed down" it's not. It always looks like it's been closed down years ago. They kinda have hours of: Mon-Sun (whenever someone that has a key feels like showing up) - (Whenever they feel like leaving) Feel especially daring? Try Halloween and don't forget your costumes Enjoy this gem before it goes all Croatoan and disappears into its extra-dimensional pocket, leaving behind a Tree with TOM carved into it.

The best dive bar in Detroit that you never knew about. You will not find better drink prices anywhere. Ron- you are an amazing cook!

You might be with strangers, but you'll feel like your'e sitting with old friends in their living room. Don't let the exterior turn you off. If you're going out drinking in Detroit, this is a must stop.

If the Dive Bar Association gave out a Best in Show award, Tom's Tavern would take the crown. With a questionable structure, I often ponder grabbing my hard hat and safety glasses before entering the building. However, Ron and his family are the best hosts. The limited bar choices mix well with the always fascinating atmosphere and clientele. The homemade treats on the uneven bar highlight Tom's charm. I've had the best baklava in my entire life here and washed it down with delicious champagne (of beers). I cannot wait to return!

This place certainly has character and literally has holes in the wall, several. It appears to have been hit by a car and then pieced back together. Owner is very nice and has a sense of humor, feels more like your visiting an uncle than it does a bar, worth seeing at least once. Call first, hours vary based on business and moods of the staff.

I guess its okay.. to be honest, I was to messed up when I went in with friends and didn't really get the vibes that everyone raves about. I was like whatever.. anyway, I guess its cool if everyone else thinks so. My bad.

I was introduced to Tom's Tavern in the mid 90's after attending a U of D reunion down the road. Since then I have shot portions of a short film there. Ron plays a mean bartender and made a short documentary about the bar. There is NO place like Tom's Tavern, any where. It defies classification, it's not a dive bar it simply is Tom's. I just left the St. Patricks Day party at Tom's I'm all warm and fuzzy (no it's not the beer). The place was filled with old timers, hipsters and regular Joe's. I will never give another bar my heart because Tom's Tavern stole it ages ago. Ca$h Only

One of the best places I've been to meet friends and new people. You're only a stranger the first time you go. After that you're a regular. They sometimes have acoustic New Orleans style musicians playing. If Ron the owner/bartender is cooking be sure to eat. Whatever it is will be incredible.

I have been trying to go to this bar for ages-it seemed everytime we would drive by, there would never be cars in the parking lot so we assumed it was closed. FINALLY I got to experience Toms. Random Sunday last week we drove by and there were cars. Yes! We got in. The interior is far different from the exterior. I was pleasantly surprised. Ron, the owner was hilarious and very welcoming. We sat at the oddly slanted bar, had a couple of beers, and sampled the food that was sitting on the counter. Ron as well as some of the patrons were interested in where we were coming from, how did we hear about the place, etc. Very friendly and chatty. I can't wait to come back to visit again. Yippee!

Don't come here if you are looking for an Applebee's decore! This is the Mecca of dive bars. Ron (owner) does not dissapoint with his hospility ... makes sure you are taken care of. Can't beat the drink prices ($2-$3) bottled beers (many are high shelf) and liqours are only $4 (and not measured). Easy to make friends because it is so cozy. More people need to forget the location ... well lit parking ... I've never had a problem here.

christine S and I have tried many times to enjoy tom's. i had heard people speak very well of the ramshackle bar on 7 mile. little did we know that the patrons park at the bank next door. if you pull up, there are no lights, no action happening inside that you can tell. so we always drove off thinking it was closed. thank god for one sunday night when we interupted a euchre game. it was kinda a private party we crashed, but the owner and everyone else was very nice. since then i've been a couple more times and have enjoyed the cheap cocktails, slanted bar, frodo hobbit like interior and the piano. seriously the cocktails are super cheap and the owner often cooks random things to eat. he also drinks right along with you and has a great time. this isn't a dive, its more like a living room with an awesome bartender and some stinky toilets with awesome grafitti. tom's is always a good idea. open wed-sat and sometimes sunday. bring cash and some smiles. love, juston

Came to Detroit for the auto show and ended up at this place given the high review score on Yelp and for me this was more fun than the show. The people were just great (very friendly and talkative) as was the live music (we came on Saturday). Fantastic place, highly recommend!

    (5)
  • Gwen J.

Go on a friday or saturday when there is live music. A++ jukebox. Sweet cliental and the owner Ron is fun to talk too. He is quite a character. Ask him to make you a snazzy special which is like jungle juice with wine, rum, and other goodies. The prices couldn't be better.

I'm not going to lie - when we first pulled up outside this place, my first thought was, "Wow, I hope my tetanus shots are up to date." It didn't help that when we got to the door, an older gentleman peered out the window at us for a bit before letting us in. Tom's is a true dive bar, but you absolutely cannot find better drink prices. Mixed drinks are dirt cheap (we're talking $3 for pretty much anything) and boy, do they make them STRONG! Tom's has a really cozy feel, like you're just hanging out at an old friend's house instead of a bar. The bathroom's slight gross-ness was overshadowed by the graffiti on the wall; I got such a kick out of reading the notes other patrons have left behind.

I haven't been here in a really long time.. but Tom's Tavern is one of my favorite Detroit memories. When I was a kid, my mom and dad would take us to Tom's after we'd trek into Detroit for an event. I remember Tom Lucas, the owner who still worked every day, even though he was well into his 80s when I met him as a child. I remember how his eyes would glisten when he'd see us, he was larger than life. I remember the crazy graffiti in the bathroom... when my mom told me it was "ok" to draw on the wall in the very dirty woman's room.Years later, when visiting the Tavern years after Tom passed away with my mom, who had driven in from the suburbs to visit me at the UDM campus, and finding the graffiti I'd drawn in the bathroom 10 years earlier. Crazy. Good, cheap beer. Very crooked floor. Amazing jukebox (at least the last time I was there!) and so much history on the walls. Check it out if you're ever in town and let me know if my graffiti is still in the girl's room!

Ok, been there once only and never had the food, but this place is a time capsule of fun! Reasonable drink prices and a guy banging out some bar standards on the piano. Very nice cozy and friendly atmosphere too.

  • Andy O.

Wow. From now on when I think of Detroit I will always remember Tom's Tavern. The bar is o. a slant to the point that your drink may slide away if you're not watching it and the bathroom was in bad shape, but the drinks are cheap and they have plenty of Bob Seger on the jukebox. You'll also get a piano performance while Ron tells you tales of the old days. At first if you venture over to Tom's you'll feel like you're probably going to die, but after a few drinks you'll have the time of your life. If you like dive bars, this is your Mecca!

I was skeptical. I read the rave reviews and over analyzed the photos of the bar. I even drove by a few times, full of doubt that the little shack in front of Home Depot had anything inside other than memories. I was so wrong. My sister, my boyfriend, and I decided to give it a shot recently. There were two other patrons, the owner Ron (pictured) answered the door asking where we had been, and I was immediately lost in the ambiance and charm of the place. The other posters hit everything on the head: it was like drinking with people I've known for years in someone's living room. Interestingly enough, Ron knows he is Yelp famous and hates it, lol. I am going back. I loved it.

Finally, we made it down here after trying several times. We were also fortunate enough to be here on a night when it was rather empty except for a few very very regular folks. We learned some things: (1) Knock on the door to gain access (2) They are open Wed, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (forgot if Sunday as well) at 6:00 (3) They have a ton of great local acts from jazz to rock. We were told that a few folks from the DSO are playing soon. You can get on their email list when you stop in for a drink (4) They just had a Babe Ruth party, which brought in over 400 people. They went through hundreds of chili dogs, Cracker Jacks, and Baby Ruth candy bars. Since the bar is small they had a mini bonfire outside with a band playing. I really couldn't have enjoyed a bar more. They have a good range of beers that are reasonably priced, the place is visually awesome - I liken it to the cantina from Star Wars. The owner and the two long term regulars couldn't have been more cordial and it seems on occasion they serve food. Great place - we are heading back tonight for a band.

Best bar ever! This place is a genuine hole in the wall. There is the owner Tom in the back who was making french frys to share with everyone which were tasty. The drinks are super cheap and the bar tender is very friendly. We came for a birthday and brought our own cake to cut which we shared with everyone in there and also added 2 other people to the birthday song since it was their birthday too! The jukebox is great no new stuff just good old music. I cant wait to try it in the summer and sit outside.

This was stop six on a pub crawl that covered a large area of the City. There is little I can add to the existing testimonials contained here, except that when we pulled up, the place looked closed. However, there was a Hemingway Old Man and The Sea like character mowing the lawn in back. He confirmed that they were indeed open and offered to buy us a drink. Score! Inside, it is exactly as described. It is little more than a shanty made of corrugated metal and lined with asbestos tiles and filled with the sounds from a kick ass NON INTERNET juke box. The Two Hearted in bottles was priced right and cold. Bottom Line: Best Dive Bar in the D. Seriously.

This is as delightfully divey as dive bars come! Small, tiny really, with an uneven floor and plaster walls that look as though someone got ambitious and started to screen and fill the holes in them but then just decided that a spot at the bar and a stiff drink sounded far more productive. It's in a seedy area and the outside is a clear indicator of what you'll see inside, as décor goes anyway...but this is a warm spot to weather a storm with the neighborhood locals. I met the owner, Ron. He was a genuine guy making up some burgers in the back and I'd bet he can tell a great story. Worth checking out for sure. I'd make it a regular bar stop if it were in walking distance.

The Two Hearted in bottles was priced right and cold. Bottom Line: Best Dive Bar in the D. Seriously.
