A visit to Motz is like a visit to the past. Business people and blue collar workers on at the tiny counter on swivel chairs eating the best burger available. In business for 80 plus years, there is nothing quite like a visit to Motz's. More substantial than a mere slider, the Motz burger is the best one you will ever have. I would not want to be in this neighborhood at night, but the place closes at 5 and I have never felt endangered. The people who come in to Motz come from all walks of life and the people that run it are a good bunch. You really need to make a visit here. It is Detroit history.

Motz was great. A fantastic "slider" - onions grilled underneath a burger underneath the bun. It was simple and simply perfect. We used to say "good, fast, cheap; pick two." Motz is pretty much all three. I also had an egg and bacon sandwich on white toast. This is what Blimpy's should be .... and sometimes is, on a good day. What else do you need? Service was fast, friendly and on the ball. The woman running the grill started my order as soon as she heard me tell the waitress. I'm keeping this short and sweet just like Motz.

The three staff members working were wearing clean black shirts with the Motz's logo. They didn't seem tired or angry, as one might expect in a busy and grease-soaked diner. They looked happy to serve us, and acted accordingly. The others ordered quickly, and Frank got a corndog for some reason. When I asked the cashier for three cheeseburgers, no ketchup, a chocolate malt, and onion rings, he asked me: "Are you on a slider crawl?" "well, no. But we eat a lot of burgers." His question implied that slider crawls are a thing. The idea of even one measly slider at each of Detroit's slider places is a little horrifying to me. I imagine them floating in the nether-regions of my stomach, pounding on the walls and wailing like a group of lost souls newly dropped into hell. I consider myself a courageous eater, but there are some lines that we are not meant to cross. The Sliders at Motz's come standard with mustard, ketchup, onion, and pickles. They are a little bit bigger than Telway's and fill you up accordingly. In traditional slider fashion, the onions are cooked alongside the patties, and then directly under the patties until the burger is combined with buns that have been steamed under towels laid across the griddle. The patties are cooked all the way through to form a kind of lifeless shade of brown/gray that you might find in a fast food burger, although a bit more attractive. I was worried they didn't have the grill on high enough- neither the patties nor the onions had any char to them. The strings of onion were brown and starting to caramelize. Only Carl ordered a normal sized burger, the bacon burger, as the rest of us couldn't resist the sliders. The burger looked great, especially next to the turdly-looking slider sitting next to it. After devouring it, he described the patty to be the same as the sliders, cooked through but without any char. It sounded gross to me, but he enjoyed it well enough. My patties were lifeless, not salted, and barely beefy -- All the things that I am against when it comes to any kind of burger. The yellow mustard provided no contrast to any of the other flavors, so adding more was confusing. I felt like a child wandering into a conversation that I couldn't understand. It didn't make anything stand out or fade away. One thing that stood out to me was the pickles, which tasted extra fresh - they stood in stark contrast to what I found was a truly unremarkable burger. (read the rest at motorcityburgerclub.word… )

Thank you Yelp for recommending Motz as a burger place to try. I had no idea they were there and I have lived just the other side of the Rouge River bridge for almost 20 years. I love supporting small private business where people care about the food and your experience instead of a fast food franchise where people are just there to collect a paycheck. While I am not a huge fan of burgers...these were really good. I find White Castle sliders disgusting so wasn't sure I would like these. I loved them!!!! I got the 2 cheeseburger special and couldn't eat my second burger because the first one was so filling! The fries were crispy outside and soft inside...perfect. ..then it got even better with malt vinegar. Local atmosphere where they obviously have a connection with regular customers. Feel like I found a gem that my husband and I can agree on when we want a burger. Thanks Motz for a great Saturday lunch!!!!!!

My wife and I learned about Motz's through a Yelp recommendation. We were not disappointed. This place is what a burger joint should be, and the burgers deserved their beloved status. Whether you're coming to eat a meal on a stool or take a sack home, this IS the place. And to Motz's, thank you for bringing back memories of lunch on a Saturday with my father. You guys rock!

After reading all the reviews thus looked like an amazing place, got directions and came here and sign reads, "ALL SOLD OUT of BURGERS." What the ??? Your a burger place and you don't know how to manage your inventory ?? Horrible, don't waste my time.

It is a solid 4 stars but I had to do 3 because of the rude service me and the friend popped in and I don't know if this was just a off day which I assume due to all the other positive reviews the place is been here for years and I have driven by it hundreds of times the burger is a little larger than normal and again unfortunately lol I have to agree with Liz once you are a custom to your favorite burger place it's hard to compare it's definitely no tellway but all in all good food a little pricey for sliders but you do get a larger size the tall white male in his late thirties I think was just having a bad day but was extremely rude and could not stop looking at my friend in a off manner all of the orders or interactions we're kept very short and Curt again definitely a four star and I will go back to bump it back up hopefully everybody is entitled to an off day but this just really put both of us off you will be full just on to if you have not been it is a definite stop

Your taste buds will be in heaven!! These are the best burgers in the Detroit area!! Great spot to grab a cheap bite before a game or a night out in the D!! The double cheeseburgers are the way to go. The only reason this place don't get five stars is the location. However this place is worth a try!! Enjoy!!

I was faithful to Telway, but after visiting Motz's for the 1st time the only way I'll go back to Telway is if Motz's is closed, much bigger sliders, cleaner atmosphere, fresher ingredients, more variety...

One of the best burgers I've ever had ... Great staff ... Great food.. What more can you ask for ? Make sure you add bacon!

As simple as a burger should be......the sliders are great. A throwback to the simple days of burger joints. A grill, a cook, a waiter, and a counter to eat you freshly prepared burger. Had the two sliders with cheese and grilled onions, fries, and washed it down with a coke. A longtime Detroit favorite that is worth the visit.

Motz's Sliders are very similar to other sliders that can be found around the Detroit metro area. What set's them apart is their personable service and the quality of their ingredients. The people working here were amazing. They were kind to everyone, the two local guys here on one of their multiple time a week visits, the down on their luck hoping to sit in peace and enjoy a cold drink on a hot day, and my father a Detroit ex-pat and his foodie son. Smiles were shared and stories were swapped. A warm reminder that even in a "bad" neighborhood there are always good people trying their best to do things the right way. This philosophy was readily evident in their burgers. Cooked through on a hot griddle, thin shaved onions caramelized into one side of the patty, served on a hot steamed bun. The perfect three or four bites a burger to fill you up for about five bucks. They taste like most other sliders, no explosions of flavor, just a few ingredients well highlighted through consistent cooking technique. For me the quality of the food was apparent when after my meal I felt like I could take on the world. I wasn't bogged down with a greasy feeling in my stomach, rather I felt great. And who couldn't use a lunch that makes them feel like they can do anything?

THIS IS THE PLACE FOR REAL SLIDERS- INVENTED IN DETROIT. I remember when they were MOTT's and open 24 hours. I made many trips for myself and my mom (she loved them). You know that when the grease soaks through the bag by the time you get home, these delicious delights are going to slide down smooth and easy. And the the fried onions, like working class caviar. After you taste these burgers, you will think about moving back to Detroit.

Good Burgers... Just wish they had longer hours. But, I understand some people want to get out of The D by sundown.

Our family decided to do a slider tour. My husband loves this place grew up with it. On my list tied 6th place with comet in royal oak. Burgers to greasy and area shady.

Best Burgers in the entire World! I grew up in the "D". In my neighborhood we were fortunate to have two outstanding slider joints. Can't remember their names, but remember paying 25 cents for a burger. Dad would bring them home by the sackful. He and my mom would rave about "Motts Hamburgers" on 6-mile I think it was. Anyway, I took a dare to visit Motz last Saturday, located in today's typical abandoned and shuttered "D" neighborhood. Kind of cool in it's own way, I didn't feel the least bit unsafe or threatened. Still love my "D"! Worth the trip! Hamburger heaven. These reviews do not do this place fair justice. I proclaim Motz the Castle of Slider Castles! If I make it to retirement, I am moving to this neighborhood!

I have to agree with Dil, Motz is really a four and a half but I am not bumping them up the half star just yet. Motz is not the best slider ever for my palate but really amazingly tasty at any rate. They are a close second if you will to my childhood faves Bates' (the Livonia one on Five Mile). I guess you just get accustomed to certain tastes and ways of doing things so that probably affects my review. I think it would be closer to a tie except for the size which also reflects in the price. I prefer a smaller slider on a crappier bun for the ideal meat to bun ratio. They did not blink here though at my request for heavy everything (ketchup, mustard, grilled onions and pickles- I am not deviating from traditional slider toppings ever) so that made up for it. Given the size you will need less sliders to make you happy, I normally do three and two was plenty here so I guess price is roughly the same. Fries were good and like Dil (again) you pretty much make me happy with malt vinegar and salt as an option on my fries. I am not much of a fry girl but these definitely are worth a try. My husband is not a fan of canned beverages so that was a minus here for him but I don't mind a bit personally. Atmosphere is appropriate, people are friendly and service is lickety split. Nothing to complain about at all. That in itself is happiness. Yes I smelled like onions the rest of the day but it was worth it.

Wow... Slider Nirvana. I mean what could be more simple. Walk in the door, give your order, watch the beautifully fresh looking beef balls be thrown on the flat top, the cook whacks them down into little patties while he's frying onions and steaming buns on the other parts of the grill. Before you know it... roughly 2 minutes... you have perfect 1/2 size burgers in front of you, the scent drawing you in and inviting you to enjoy the steaming hot burger. I've done my share of burgers, and as far as the proverbial slider is concerned, I think that Motz may do it the best. We strolled in 5 persons strong, lines ourselves on stools in front of the counter just like so many others have done for the 70 or 80 years that Motz has been around. Within 5 minutes we were all enjoying burgers, fries, onion rings, soft drinks and shakes. Fantastic food, great and friendly employees. This a good way to break up the work day and change the attitude for the next 4 hours of work. Motz is now my favorite.

+ Good Burgers, Friendliness of staff and customers - Small seating area, flavorless onion rings, I read about this place in an article in the USA Today earlier this month. It was included in a list titled, "10 great places to sink your teeth into a burge

I've had many a slider, and Motz is the best I've ever come across! The meat was quality, the onions were nicely cooked, and not too soft. Also, the folks behind the counter were really friendly and chatted with me while I waited for my order. Honestly, even if the burgers weren't as awesome, the service was so friendly, I'd probably still go back!

Ok, so I ask my Dad along on my sunny morning jaunt down to Belle Isle because I know he loves everything "Detroit". It was a great ride with all Dad's little bits of Detroit trivia and then Dad said, "I gotta show you this little burger joint". This is where I get a little nervous because with Dad (who has no fear) you could end up on any of the "wrong streets" in Detroit ~ not that there's many of those. We cruise down Jefferson and I pray he doesn't expect me to park my pretty shiny new Dodge Charger in front of some strip of abandon buildings to go to the one tiny "burger joint' left standing. He doesn't. He points out a tiny building on the "corner" of a strip of abandon buildings, charming, really. We park in the private lot, street side across from a police station - there's a plus. We go in and I am pleasantly surprised by an old school immaculately clean counter diner. Very friendly service, greats us with a smile and the menus are overhead and marked in grease pencils. I'm liking it so far! Dad orders for us. Sliders with the works (ketchup, mustard, pickles and onions) and a basket of fries. I watch the cook whoop out the little round balls of beef and quickly set to work "splatting" them into patties on the decade seasoned grill with loads of onions. You could tell the cook loved this part, she was great at "splatting" them flat. She was pretty young so it wasn't the years of practice, just the genuine joy of "splatting". Cooked fast and served, they were tiny bits of heaven without even an over load of grease - just right! Dad remembers walking to this place when the burgers were just 12 cents! Good spot! Although though they aren't 12 cents anymore they were still a great price and delicious!

I'm ashamed to admit that my first trip to Motz's only took place today. Yes, given that I'm a native Detroiter, I concede that I'm a failure. Enough about me, Motz's burgers are damn good. Motz is one of the oldest constantly operating slider joints in the country. You've got to be good to last this long in Detroit, no? Don't let the cheap fare fool you! Grab a lunch special: 2 burgers (add $.50 for cheese), fries and a pop for $5.00. Next time, I'm ordering the half-pound Motz burger. PS. Sad to say that I learned of Motz via Serious Eats. The best laid plans of mice and men....you know the rest of that. I had planned on not going anywhere for lunch today having already scored a Tubby's famous the previous evening. But finding myself on the southwest side of town schlepping people to the bank and what not it was 11am when I noticed that I hadn't eaten yet, and I really wasnt in the mood for that sub of mine. I actually GOT OUT OF THE CAB and walked into the place. It was like everyone who has reviewed this place said it was; neat as a pin, and not too crowded. I ordered one, because I didn't want to have any gastric issues when I eat onions. The waitress was aghast that I only ordered one but I explained it away by telling her I really wasnt all that hungry. While my order was prepared I inquired about the shirts. I have a large collection of t shirts from all over the place and at 10 dollars this one would make a fine addition. The burger was heavenly and in retrospect I should have gotten a few more, but then again I have that experience to look forward to. The shirt is cool and I am proud to have it in my collection. This in no way makes me biased, but there is no way I could hate this food. There is a reason they have been there that long.

Good greasy onionyumminess (yes a new word). The only thing holding back the fifth star is the price. $1.60 is a bit much for the little gut-grenades. The joint is clean and the ladies at the counter who seem to have been here since the grand opening couldn't be friendlier.

I LOVE this place. Deliciously seasoned meat, with delicious onions on a delicious bun. Seriously, you have to come here once and you will be hooked. Also, they have a 2 burger, fries and soda special for $5. You can't go wrong :)

WE VISIT MOTZ'S usually on Saturday...years ago My wife and her siblings used to go to Motz quite often because their school was close by..... I recommend the MEXICAN BURGER for the more adventurous and I might add that the Owners and their #1 cook are the BEST we really enjoy going there

Excellent sliders (actually a bit bigger than usual), some good deals, awesome service. I'd love to give this place a 4.5, since it's not THE best ever, but it's pretty-damn-good. These sliders are about as big as a regular fast-food hamburger, but they taste incredible. The fresh meat is hammered with straw onions and grilled in front of you. In only a few minutes, it's being tossed on a bun with pickles mustard and ketchup. You can ask for a few other toppings on demand. Two sliders, a side of killer fries, and a can of coke will set you back exactly $5. Great deal. The kicker is that they have malt vinegar on the table top. I love me some salt and vinegar on my fries when eating burgers! They list a salmon burger and a veggie burger on the menu - if you're daring. Also Italian sausage, turkey burgers, and a mysteriously named Mexican burger (I didn't ask)... They close at 6, so come for lunch or an early dinner. The people who run this joint are just too darned cute too. Friendly, fast, and chatty if you care to chat. Always good tunes kicking out overhead. And the counters glisten. Motz is a big part of what makes Fort St. a hidden gem of hidden gems. ps. other guy is right... you WILL smell like onions for a while. dress appropriately.

I'm gonna be short & sweet with this review: The sliders here are heavenly! So get yourselves to Motz's ASAP!!!

Ok motz is like a white castle burger on steriods. Its loaded. It taste delicous. But here's the catch you ready? When you have a motz burger everyone within ten feet of you can smell that you had a motz burger. For some reason it has smell of onions and other stuff that sticks with you. Remember in cartoons a cloud would follow the character when he had a smell, well its sort of like that. I choose to pass but some people can resist, but like I said it is good. Good luck

I was very excited to try this so I drove down there on my birthday and was a little disappointed. The sliders were larger than most, but I thought they were a little dry. I like the meat tasting like a juicy onion. Maybe I was a little beat down because I ate a Buddy's small in the car on my way there. Don't forget to check out the West Fort St. Bar right down the road.

The perfect slider in perfect slider ambiance. For all of you Five Guys fans this place blows it out of the water and has a genuinely welcoming quality that's missing from all the corporate joints. Add to the fact that it's a piece of Detroit history (it's been around since 1939). Add to the fact that you can get full on $5-7 and it's well worth a lunch time visit.

    (5)
  • Matt S.

2 burgers, 1 coke, 1 fries....$5! Can't beat that for lunch and it's plenty of food. Best slider burger I've had in a long time. The meat was definitely fresh and the service was incredibly fast too. Dig it!

I think the Mexican bruger at Motz might be my favorite burger in the area. It's a $5 burger, but it's huge. I has all the works plus jalapeno pepers. it's just fantastic. Everytime I'm in the area I'll stop by if they're open and grab a Mex burger. Check the hours as they close early and I don't believe they're open on Sundays.

Delicious food, the sliders are top notch. Not only is the food great, the experience is made better with great customer service. Everyone that works there is friendly. This place is a must-visit.

When it comes to sliders, motz is my favorite in metro detroit. Larger and cheaper than hunter house. Also, the burger is made with high quality ingredients. If you're lucky, you might catch a few prostitutes hanging out on fort street too. Can't beat that ambiance!

Motz Burgers are excellent! I put them up with Bates Burgers in Livonia as my favorite sliders. Bates gets the nod from me, but not by much. I have never been hassled outside the restaurant, although the neighborhood is a bit gritty. Make the trip-you won't be disappointed!
