This is a must spot to go to if you're in the area for a Tigers or Lions games. The location is perfect. I never had bad service. Try and get there a little earlier than normal or make reservations as the place can fill up fast.

The service was terrible. It turned out they lost our order. The four of us seemed to wait forever. We saw all of the tables around us getting their food, but not us!!! Finally they admitted that they had messed up and we finally got our food. The brat that I ordered was very good. We made it to the game in time and saw Simon pitch and one hitter and the Tigers win 4-zip.

As massive, multi-story sports bars go, this one is pretty standard. The concept isn't exactly unique especially in sports towns: take an old warehouse-like building, build very large bars on each floor, add a tailgating party area outside, and top it off with with rooftop deck that overlooks the baseball stadium. Mix with several million gallons of Miller Light, and you got yourself a party. For how busy is was before Saturday's Tigers game, I received relatively quick service when I went to the bar on the first floor. Although not fancy, the fries and chicken fingers were surprisingly good. That said, it's disorganized and claustrophobic to navigate the different floors, and I always ending up losing someone from my party in here. The bathroom lines are long if you are a female, and servers are hard to track down for your check or refills. Will I be back - yes. It's so close to Comerica that I just can't help but get sucked into their vortex. I just tell myself this place is what it is, and I don't put too many expectations on it.

Found piece of hair in my burger. I don't think I'll be eating here anymore. First and last time. The beer was good, no hair in that. It's too bad, because my guy loves it here.

Ate dinner here with my parents prior to a Tigers game last week. It was way too busy at Nemo's bar to order any food prior to getting on the shuttle. Once at Cheli's, for peak dinner/prior to the game, it was about a 15-30 minute wait. My parents wanted to try some Detroit coneys and I ordered a pastrami and sauerkraut on rye with no thousand island dressing. Good selection of beers. From the time we sat down to paying the bill it was less than 30 minutes, which really helped the timing to get to the game on time. Food was decent, and a lot less than what it would have cost inside the stadium. Good place to go for a quick bite & beer before games.

Cool Place to go before the games, Very close and great place to meet up with your friends. The food is ok, not great, but not bad. If you need a drink and want to hang out. This is your place.

Grill was closed after a Tigers game on a Sunday, drinks only?? Ate yesterday before Saturday game and food was okay. Seated upstairs for some reason when there were plenty of tables available on main floor, reserved tables not explained until we got upstairs that they are for eating, with two kids and wife, of course we are going to eat. Service was okay, not anything special or kind. Last time I go here.

Drove from Pittsburgh to see a concert at Comerica with my husband. Stopped in for a few brews before the show. Noticed the bar had an outdoor patio area with music and food so we decided to check it out. On our way out the door to get to the patio 2 bouncers were at the door. Lots of people going in and out, one bouncer said something to my husband but due to the noise level and line of traffic going into the bar my husband did not hear the bouncer. Next thing I know the bouncer screams at my husband calling him an ignorant idiot and smacks the beer out of his hand splashing beer all over the other patrons, myself, and my husband. The other bouncer standing nearby was so embarrassed he walked away shaking his head. This was a completely abysmal experience. I wouldn't recommend this place if my life depended on it.

We had went to Cheli's for a bite to eat after the Tigers game. The place seemed a bit disorganized as far as the service went on the main floor. We were told if we go outside it was first come first serve out of a food trailer type service. We ended up going upstairs to the 2nd floor bar and were pretty much seated immediately. We had ordered wings as a starter and 3 others ordered chili. I had ordered the chili dogs while 2 others also ordered a pastrami sandwich and a steak and cheese sandwich. 3 out of the 4 had ordered Guiness and I had ordered a local IPA for the first round. For the second round we all ordered this Ghetto Blaster beer which was really not good and flat. The food was ok. The beer was served in plastic cups which for us was a little strange as it was like being at a house party. Over all it was ok. Our server was polite and personable.

A great venue to meet anyone before or after a Tiger game or concert at the Fox or Comerica. Bar food is decent, not great but it's all about location, location, location here. The hostess was very accommodating when we asked for a table for four to meet friends. FYI, they do not take reservations so if you're looking to meet with a group of people before a game or concert plan on arriving early.

  • Emily W.

Good lunch spot especially on non-game day, although I'm sure it's great on game days, too. We are happy with grilled cheese, fried, and wings. Drinks were refilled quickly and staff has always been super friendly.

Came here after the bills / jets game in Detroit and was not impressed. Got a table and waiter to arrive, just to learn they don't serve food... Let me place you in perspective of a normal money making world ... A nfl football game has just let out on a Monday night around 930/10pm ... You are a Hail Mary pass from the stadium and your kitchen is closed? Still shocked at this aspect of business decisions but their loss I suppose. Only thing I had was a watered down captain and coke for a ridiculous amount... Not impressed Chris Chelios

  • Thomas C.

A bar that offers fewer beers upstairs than down gets two stars. no matter what the explanation for that is. Service was good, but sit downstairs. Proximity to the ball park is a definite plus, nice outdoor beer garden and cook out grille for pre-game ... but any place that offers fewer beers upstairs than ... wait I said that already. Food looked good, did not try any but would if ever go back.

Great atmosphere for a game day! I've had the food before also and it wasn't bad but today a few friends and I walked in and never once got asked if we wanted a drink or were even acknowledged! The waitress continued to walk by us, knew we were there and continued to ignore us!! Luckily the red wings game was on so we were able to watch that but drinkless and never acknowledged.....

  • Alan L.

What can you say? Location: GREAT Staff: GREAT Food: (it's bar food, but it's GREAT!) Took my son for a Red Wing game; used the FREE shuttle to the Joe. Just a great experience all around.

    (4)
  • Andrew A.

Food was almost as bad as the service. Pastrami tasted like a$$, the bread was soaked in grease and bland. The fries were passable at best. Our server had no idea what was in the quesadilla.... Not much else to day. Will not be back.

This review is for "Game Day Cheli's" as it's the only Cheli's experience I've ever had, and I can't honestly say what dinner there on a Tuesday would be like. Cheli's is my go to Detroit stop before the game, it's a tradition for me, as much as Labatte Blue at the Game, or stopping at the Old Shillelagh after the game. Get there early to get a seat, we usually arrive a couple hours before the game, and sometimes still have to wait. The highlight of every visit is Cheli's Chili Dogs, 1 for the wife and 2 for me. They're coneys served topped with a delightful Chili, fresh cut uncooked onions, and mustard. They are the perfect pre-game food. Larger games you'll find outside music, booze, and food. All in all it's a great place to stop with solid service and good food! Can't wait to stop in on our next stop!

  • Nancy K.

Great location and nice rooftop bar but other than that, it's crap. The staff is rude, especially the "bouncers" (it's really hard for me to take these guys seriously at noon on a Sunday afternoon), the drinks are watered down, the beer selection is horrible and the crowd is a little on the rough side. But the location is a nice, easy meeting spot if you've got people coming in from a bunch of other places. Personally, I think there are better, nicer, cleaner spots in the area for a pre game drink, nosh or get together.

    (2)
  • Kim L.

I'd say typical bar / chain restaurant food, but not even that good. For a restaurant with the name 'Chili' in it's title, you'd think the chili would be good, but you would be wrong. The burgers were also sub-par. Super noisy making it hard to converse. I'd avoid and find another of the many cool Detroit bars / venues for dinner.

If you want a fun atmosphere prior to hitting up a Tigers game, this place offers just that. Thanks to its proximity to Comerica Park, big crowds of fans before/after the game gather in throngs and it's a loud, overly crowded spot to grab a good (if not overpriced) drink or two. We unfortunately were also hungry and I do not recommend coming here to eat for real on a game day. We had to wait forever before my fiance's dad finally managed to coerce a hostess-like person up on the top floor to just give us a table (there were some serious hostessing issues on the main floor). The waitress we got was cute and friendly but the service was terrible overall (like, once we finallllly got served our food, we had no silverware...?) and so was the food. I know Detroit is famous for awesome coney dogs and these were gross. Terrible chili (wait -- and this place calls itself a chili bar, like, specifically?!) and sopping-wet buns did not make for a happy girl. I've noticed lots of other reviewers label this place as "nothing special," and, yep, that about sums it up.

  • Keaton M.

Excellent location to grab some drinks and food before a tigers game. The menu was ok , nothing special at all but your typical sports bar offerings. We were there at 5pm before a 7pm tiger game and they seemed thrown off with the crowd, very slow service and waitress never checked back. I would suggest more staffing/organization on game day. Food was very good and reasonably priced. I'd go back, but not the best place ever either

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! My friends and I went to Cheli's after the Tiger's game on 9/13/14. Everyone had some drinks and then we called it a night. Everyone cashed out their tabs and we walked out. As we got 2 blocks away, we were chased down by our waitress (DANIELLE), some other woman, and a couple bouncers saying that we still owed them for 5 shots. An acquaintance of ours (not someone we know personally) bought 5 shots and she said that he did not pay for them. As an act of good faith I walked back to see what the deal was. She was adamant that the guy did not pay for the shots. I didn't even want to deal with the situation so I paid the $30 only to find out that the shots had been paid for and she must have made a mistake. I called to speak with a manager today 9/14/14 and instead of trying to remedy the situation, she asked me what my side of the story was and just called me a liar and insulted me and my friends. She was unbelievably rude and it didn't matter what I said, she already had her mind made up. The waitress kept on saying I was the one who ordered the shots: FALSE. That when I went back and paid for them I only paid $15: FALSE. Then she changed her statement and said I put $15 on a card and paid the other $15 with cash: FALSE. I was the only person trying to solve the problem and when I called this morning I was treated like a criminal or something. HORRIBLE MANAGEMENT, HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. No wonder the one in Clinton Township shut down, if this Cheli's was not so conveniently located, I think they would be out of business as well. If I could give this place no stars I would.

    (1)
  • Sara B.

I would give this bar 0 stars if I could. Worst bar in detroit I've ever been to. The bouncers are rude and ridiculous and the food couldn't be more disgusting. Don't even bother.

  • Marc C.

Fun place prior to Lions/Tigers games. Can't say I've ever eaten anything more than a hot dog out of one of the food trailers in back because we always tailgate in the lots behind Cheli's. That being said, the atmosphere is always a ton of fun and beer and cocktail prices are very reasonable, especially in contrast with the prices in Food Field and Comerica Park. Well worth making a visit for a brew or 4 when downtown enjoying a game, and bonus, Chris Chelios himself is usually on site, always genial, greeting the crowd, making sure the outdoor fire pits are stoked, and being an all-around great host. Feels like going to a party in his own backyard.

    (4)
  • Will B.

Location is the only thing keeping this place open. Staff sucks, food sucks, prices and drinks aren't anything special. I try to avoid it when I can, but I get sucked in with the crowd occasionally.

    (2)
  • Dana G.

Love that they have chicken chili and vegetarian chili that is awesome. Simon at the bar was awesome he kept my water full and was always good to recommend a new drink. Prices were good and the vibe before a Lions game was lots of fun!

    (4)
  • Joe B.

We didn't actually go into Cheli's yesterday because they had their lot party kicking, and it was a total blast! The music was up, plenty of picnic tables scattered around, a drink trailer on site and great people watching. The only drawback was sitting along the fence invited scalpers and beggars to hassle us a little but it was a fun time and a nice skip to the Comerica from our table. This is a great place to be before a Tiger's game!

    (4)
  • Kevin C.

Where else are you going to drink beers outside steps away from Comerica Park? This is it. Nothing fancy, just a fueling station before heading into the ballpark. We sat at the bar, drank beers and ordered food. The prices were cheap. But then realized condiment cost 35 cents and everything else was a la carte. Which is fine I don't need a bunch of food I don't want to eat. The burger was, well a burger, and it filled the void. You can't really beat $4 drafts either. The service was all good at the bar. If there's bar seats open why wouldn't you take them? I think this should be a rule of thumb anywhere, unless on a date, or some event where getting enticed to drink more because quick service is not appropriate. A few flights down we exit through the back to the front patio area. Very nice place for kicking around and chatting with friends. Several large umbrellas provide some shade on this scorching day. Beer girls up front with troughs canned Buds, Badass Beer, and Blue Lights for $4. Can't beat that either. A great option before a Tigers game without a doubt. Just not sure I would seek this place out otherwise. All blended in with a good experience in the D for a sporting event.

    (3)
  • Amy B.

This place has the location and the rooftop that you see when you're in the ballpark. Asking about the ball game access though and they say that you can't see the field from there. But still...Rooftop ballpark bar. We had a pleasant stay with the friendly staff during our pub crawl. Nice selection.

    (3)
  • Paul T.

A great location Packed and rowdy for sports games But it's a "meh" bar

    (3)
  • Fran D.

Went there during the World Series... duly noted that it was extremely busy. However, my experience waiting in line to get into the bar has forever ruined my chances of ever going back there to pregame before the Tigers. Waited in line for an hour to get into the bar while watching the bouncer let numerous groups of people in without waiting... Absolute BS. Customers in front of us and behind us left very unhappy as well. We realized overpaying for crappy chili and even worse draft beer wasn't worth our integrity, so we left and went to Park Bar.... a MUCH better atmosphere and MUCH better service!

    (1)
  • Valerie G.

So here's what's good about Cheli's - Location, rooftop bar, the room you can reserve on the 3rd floor. Here's what's not so good- Everything else. The food has never really been anything special - the service is spotty- even spottier is the hours of both the kitchen and the entire restaurant as well. They aren't super busy in the winter (no Tigers) - so they tend to be randomly closed or have reduced menus with no real warning. I've got to say- there are much better options for a place to stop before/after an event downtown.

    (2)
  • Amy P.

Not a big fan of Chelis. I always go in expecting something, but getting nothing, which is probably my own fault, but I don't know, somethings off here. The rooftop is nice, and the outdoor area they have set up for special events is fun and has a nice atmosphere, but I find myself only staying for 1-2 beers and then getting bored. The food sucks, the service isn't all that great, so really, it's all about location here.

    (2)
  • Matthew S.

Came here during Memorial Day weekend and food was ok.It was typical bar food quality not great not bad.Service was also typical for this type of place not great but not awful.Overall I would just say this place is a average sports bar.

    (4)
  • Chris W.

A great place to go before a game and grab some drinks and the Chelios family's famous chili! And we were fortunate to have a few beers with Cheli himself before we left for the game!

    (5)
  • Jeff S.

Stopped in to check it out and for coneys and drinks with my family. Coneys were good, beer served in a plastic cup and inside the building - blah and then we were kicked out shortly after eating because they were closing at 6:30pm on a Thursday night? Ok been there, done that.. Went to Hockeytown, at least they are open....

    (2)
  • Naveen N.

Good place to pregame when coming for a Lions/wings/tigers game. They have standard food and basic drinks as well

    (3)
  • John P.

Fantastic location. Lousy place to eat. Mediocre place to drink and watch a game. Really, the only reason to stop here is if you're going to a Tigers or Lions game and want to grab a quick one before you head in. Since you're literally 50 feet from Comerica Park, it's the last spot for a cold one. Here's the thing though: you're going to pay just about as much for a beer here as you will in the park, especially when you consider tip. False economy, man. As far as food goes, it's a bar menu, which is to be expected. It's also a sub-par bar menu. On game days, they'll have a grill going outside and you can usually get a serviceable sausage and peppers. The burger is a frozen food service patty. The chicken breast is a chicken breast, in the academic sense. Expect to pay close to stadium prices for anything. Honestly, it's not an awful place to watch a game, if you're OK with standing around with a bunch of drunks. The people who come here are usually fairly in to the games as they're broadcast, so the cheering can be kind of cool. It's definitely not my first choice.

    (2)
  • Kari C.

Stop here before a Tiger's game and have a good time. This place can get insane busy and that's part of the fun before and after games. We got lucky and got a seat at the bar quite quickly, but I can see that not always being the case. The food is regular bar food, so don't expect more. Perfect for a pre or post baseball game, couple beers, bar food, and good atmosphere.

    (3)
  • Stephen H.

The food is OK here. I love the atmosphere of the second flood especially after and during games. Its nicely decorated. My most exciting moment occurred in 2007. I was Chelis in Dearborn watching Detroit play Nashville and Chelios had gotten into a fight. The crowd at Chelis was going nuts!

    (3)
  • L D.

Disappointed ...if you've been out of the vegetarian chili for months (which btw is not very difficult to make) please take it off the menu!

    (1)
  • Erin D.

Great view of Detroit and Comerica from the rooftop but you gotta climb your way to the top and avoid the obstacles on the stairs ie, wasted beer, and well patrons who just need a "breather" on the climb up. Place was packed before the game a few weeks ago, but still had to come check it out A because its Cheli, B, its hockey, and C...I'm in Detroit duh. Great bar, only came for cocktails and people watching. Oh and obviously filled with memorabilia. Menu looked good, huge beer garden in the parking lot and lots of space on top with places to sit as well. Great place to monitor the lines going into the park too...:)

    (4)
  • Mark B.

Just really mediocre and unimpressive. Only three types of chilli (regular, chicken, and veggie) and they ran out of veggie. Had a very mediocre grilled cheese and a lukewarm side of mac and cheese. Decent beer list. Nothing special at all. I was expecting much more.

    (2)
  • Nader K.

If your looking for a quiet place to hang before and after tigers game I'm sure this isn't the place. Lol. Come here all the time. It's good for tigers games and special events. The food is always fresh. They have entertainment during games. It's can get crowed here but yeah there is like 25k plus down here for these event so don't be alarmed because of wait times and service. If your going to comerica I think it's the place to pre drink or a quick snack.

    (4)
  • Jenn A.

Great location if you're going to a Tiger's game, that's for sure. Not a fan so much of the food but it's totally typical. I recommend the roof in good weather.

    (4)
  • Ben H L.

I stopped by here at Cheli's after a night Tigers game. I really wanted to try the food but unfortunately, kitchen was closed that night. However, I did manage to make it to the rooftop bar where I got a birds eye view of the post game fireworks show from Comerica. I think that was definitely worth the many flights of stairs I had to climb to get there... The interior was pretty dark but the bar area was packed and there were plenty of groups of women and men coming in and out of there. I guess I may never know how good the food is at Cheli's.

    (2)
  • Andrew A.

Stopped in on my way to the Tiger's game on 5/19 since it is across the street from Comerica Park. Has 3 different floors with a roof top patio and an outdoor beer garden. No parking parking lot - street or garage parking only. Nothing really special about the place. The drink and food were cheap. Although they nickel and dime you for lettuce, tomato, etc. I got the burger and fries. Not the best burger I have ever eaten but not the worst either. It did its job to fill me up before the game. Service was slow but it was a game day so I'll cut them some slack on that one. If you need a quick cheap bite to eat before the game, it can be beat.

    (3)
  • Pauly G.

Great place to hang out and meet up with people before an Event downtown. Only seen there limited menu with burgers and fries, Drinks are a little expensive, but the view from the roof and the good times we have there are priceless. Good Times.

    (4)
  • Bill F.

By all accounts this should be a 3 star place. But the truth is nothing beats this places location and simple menu. It's the perfect pre-game bar. My wife and I used to go there before every Tigers game. Decent chili...cheap beer...fast service. And you can eat for less then $10...that's crazy right across the street from Comerica Park. This place has gotta be rockin now with the Tigers in the ALCs and the Lions undefeated. If I ever get back to a Tigers game at Comerica...I know where I'll be going.

    (4)
  • Maggie H.

Huh, it's all about location. Is Cheli's really a special place...no it's a frickin' bar!! If you are looking for things like "good service" and "good food", go somewhere that isn't kiddy corner from Comerica. This drinking spot is key because of its location downtown. I end up here often whenever we go down to a __________ game (fill in the blank). The drinks are fine and the service is pretty standard, don't get your hopes too high and you will be just fine.

    (3)
  • Jeannie L.

I am giving three starts because the first time I came to Cheli's the food was nothing to complain (or to write home) about and the service was fast. However, the second time I went in the experience was not the same. It was before a wings game on a Monday night and we were seated within 15 minutes. It took the server awhile to get to our table to take drink orders. By the time we actually received the drinks we had been sitting for about 20 minutes. We finally ordered. Disappointed they no longer served the delicious waffle fries (the waitress said Chris Chelios wanted the menu to be more "bar like", don't know what that has to with waffle fries) we ordered chili cheese fries. These came out with a little dixie cup size of chili and "queso", which was really just melted cheese. The food finally came out and our glasses had been empty for about 10 minutes, with no sign of a refill coming our way. I got the chicken sandwich, it was dry and I had asked the waitress for onions and mustard. Neither came. The person I was with got chili and the waitress didn't bring crackers. I had to get up to get him crackers because the waitress was nowhere to be found. I got my onions and mustard about 20 minutes after the food arrived so my sandwich was cold by then, just adding to the disappointment of it being extremely dry. The bill took way too long to come. The waitress ended up getting a dollar tip. I'm usually a good tipper but she didn't really even deserve that dollar. The waitress did they say were down one server that evening so I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt but this was ridiculous! The $2 cans of beer helped the experience a little better and made all the waiting seem a little less annoying. The shuttle to Joe Louis is a nice benefit of eating at Cheli's. However, if you're trying to catch it after the game you should leave a good half an hour to catch one that isn't packed. You're better off taking the people mover to Broadway. Overall, I won't be back to Cheli's for awhile and probably never, ever before a wings game (even on a Monday night) again.

  • Hymae W.

I hate this place. Its one of those places that you only go to due to location. The food is straight up embarrassing. I would rather go to mcdonalds.I refused to go here again, i dont care how close it is to the ball park.

    (1)
  • Jason F.

There is nothing special about this place other than the fact that it's right next to Comerica, and you can sort of see inside the stadium from the roof. I had to take a long shower after the $4 can of Bud Light I bought. There are plenty of better spots within two blocks of this place.

    (3)
  • Valerie V.

Went for drinks on a Saturday night in June and last call was before 12am, even though there were people at the bar. shoved us out the door by 12. Not great and not close to anything else worthwhile for evening entertainment.

  • Mark P.

Had a pretty bad experience at Cheli's today, it's never been a place with great service (that's okay on game days, I get it) or great food (usually decent for a bite before a game) but today's visit was a letdown in every possible way. 1. Our table was wobbly as all hell, put some wood and a metal ball on it and it would double as a labyrinth game. 2. The music was so loud. It wasn't as busy as it normally is before a TIger's game so maybe they had it loud expecting more bodies to absorb the sound but it was borderline obnoxious. 3. Soggy chili cheese fries. How hard can it be to make chili fries? Please mix the ingredients at the last second, don't let it soak in before it reaches me. It'll probably be a long time before I order any food there again. They already took my favorite item off the menu (used to love getting a mini-nachos to go for lunch) and if they can't get fries right well than there maybe no hope.

This review is for the service we received. Walk in. Get seated. Wait for server. Wait for server. Wait for server. Wait for server. No one says hi? I say bye!

I stopped in on a Tuesday night and both bartenders were really fun and helpful. Had the coney dog, which was very tasty. I love this place, will definitely go back!

Location is great (right across from Comerica) and atmosphere is alright (though sometimes crowded, particularly after Tigers games or during Red Wings games). There are three levels at the downtown location -- the main restaurant/bar level, the second restaurant/bar level (which is only open for big crowds, I believe -- it has always been closed when I've been there), and the rooftop bar. One of the best places to catch a beer in the D is on the roof of Cheli's on a hot summer day. Food is tasty (great burgers), though a tad bit pricey considering there are tastier (&cheaper) places in the area. Overall, a great game day spot, especially in the summertime! Also, mad love to Chris Chelios (and pretty much the only reason I had any interest in coming here, haha).

    (3)
  • Daniel E.

I work downtown. The options for lunch are many, but when I just feel like having a burger, fries and access to SportCenter, Cheli's is always where I go. If you're not in the know, Cheli's is owned and operated by Chris Chelios, legendary NHL legend and current Red Wing. He grew up in the restaurant biz with his family and operates this great bar downtown and another one in the Dearborn area. It's a great spot to watch a game, meet before a game or even catch some of the action at Comerica Park if you can get a spot in its famous rooftop bar. They usually have a limited menu on game days and at lunch to keep things simple. Burgers, nachos, beef brisket and yes, chili, are the standard fare here. I always have a well prepared meal, they're usually pretty quick and I've always had good service. As others have mentioned, their cheesy waffle fries are one of the best things this bar has going for it, in addition to a nice variety of beers on tap and in bottles. You'll often bump into local sports icons in this bar and if you're around during the lunch hour, Chelios himself often stops in. It goes to show you that he actually cares about the place and he's often one to mingle with the regulars. A great lunch spot, a great all-around sports bar that preserves Detroit's past and cements its future. Thanks Cheli!

May be a chili bar but I've warmed up to it. With a delightful rooftop patio, Cheli's is a great place to meet with friends. The crowd is relaxed and without any loud pounding music, good drinks and coversations flow abundantly. At the end of our night, we were barely fending off our munchies demons when we saw a pizzeria near the entrance. $8 for a reasonably sized ( larger than a styrofoam plate) six-sliced pepperoni large and we had our late night meal secured. Nice diggs as a destination or a starting point; make sure you say hi to Chris Chelios while he checks up on patrons.

Worst service ever. Had 8 people, food came out 2 plates at a time. By the time the last 2 got their bowls of chili (seriously - it's a CHILI place) some people were done eating. Had to stand in the middle of the room with our coats on to practically beg for our bill. Would have had more to drink, but waitress never came to the table. Sad to say it was a bad experience and will not go back. I have never seen so many staff be so clueless in one restaurant.

The significant other and I hit up Cheli's after a Redwings game at the Joe. We took the free game shuttle back to Cheli's after the game where we were able to park out front for free. We had $1 pints of domestic beer, not the best beers a $1 how can you go wrong, and a couple bowls of chili. The kitchen wasn't open but the chili didn't disappoint. It is probably the best restaurant chili I've had. The service was prompt and polite and the bar was virtually smoke free. I'd really like to stop by sometime when the kitchen is open.

  • Cheli's Chili Bar is a bar and restaurant owned by hockey player Detroit Red Wing Chris Chelios, and it is known for its chili. Go figure! The location is great if you are heading to a Tigers or Lions game as Cheli's is about one block from Comerica Park (where the Detroit Tigers play) and two blocks from Ford Field (homebase for the Detroit Lions). Of course, it is also a great bar to watch the Red Wings! You can look over to Comerica Park and read the scoreboard and see the big screen. You could essentially watch the Tigers game from the deck at Cheli's, and they even have bleachers set up so you can do just that. Game days at Cheli's are quite busy. There is usually a post-Tigers-game rush. Expect to put your name on a waiting list, if you are planning to get food. Otherwise, I would recommend going straight up to the rooftop level. On a beautiful day, the deck offers great views of downtown Detroit and any ongoing baseball game. While Cheli's is in a great location and can be a fun place to watch a game, it really depends on the crowd around you. If it's fellow sports fans, you are in for a good time. If it's whiny sorority girls wearing heels at a sports bar, you might be in some trouble! Also, I should warn you that beer on game days is as big of a rip off as at the stadium itself. A large beer at Comerica Park during Tigers games cost $8.25. A simple can of Bud Light at Cheli's cost $4. You can buy a 6-pack of longnecks for $6 at the liquor store!

The 2nd time I've ever been to this place (6/12/09 night of Stanley finals) I was assaulted by a Detroit gang squad police officer for no other reason than asking a question. As a bar brawl broke out, 2 of my friends and I were near the scene and attempted to leave when I was pulled back by my shirt and beaten over the head several times. The bar's staff did nothing and I was cuffed and escorted out along with my friends who had no involvement whatsoever. I returned for my debit card and discovered that the staff had lost it. I am a WSU student and work at Henry Ford Hospital main campus. I have NO criminal record and committed no crime at the scene, nor was I charged, only beaten. I will NEVER patronize this place again; there is obviously ZERO protection nor consideration for its customers.

For Tigers and Red Wings games, Cheli's on the Park is a must. Oh, I guess Lions too, but who even bothers with them anymore? It has a great sports atmosphere, and pre-and post games it gets pretty loud in here. If you stay late enough, you'll probably run into one or two players, or maybe even Cheli himself. On game days they have a limited menu, but the chili is actually really really good. So are the chili related menu items. The nachos are big enough to share, and the rest of the food is your typical bar food. The beer is on tap and cold and they have plenty of TV tuned to all the games going on.

So what I like about this place is its central location near Comerica, Ford Field, the Fox, etc., and it's rooftop bar. From up there, you look over at Comerica Park and check out what's going on. It's a great place to meet up before a game... or go to after if you are wanting to continue to party. It does get crowded, however, so keep that in mind. They also carry Oberon on tap when it's in season, which is a big plus. Oh they have an extensive menu as well, though I've never tried the food.

Just had my first and last time ever bringing business to this place. Serious lack of customer service in this joint. Bouncer turned "manager" behind the bar has no hospitality standards and does not know anything about the product he was serving. Stopped in for a beer before the Tigers game yesterday and ordered a Magic Hat #9 draft. The beer had a bile-like aftertaste to it. I've had enough #9s in my life to know how it should taste... either the line was dirty or the keg was bad/old. I was unsatisfied with the beer after a few sips; also had my buddy taste it to make sure I wasn't crazy. "Manager" behind the bar tasted it and says "its fine", and maybe I am just used to "regular IPAs". When I asked if I could choose a different beer instead, and not a full beer, just enough to match the remaining amount I had of my unsatisfactory beer, the "manager" said I had to pay for the whole thing. First of all, #9 is not an IPA... I noted. After he claimed it says "right on the bottle, apricot infused IPA", I brought up the beer description on my phone for him, knowing he was in the wrong (which he was). He claimed that because no one else disliked/complained about the beer, I was not in a place to be unsatisfied with the product. He then told me to call Magic Hat to complain and try to get my money back. Customer Service 101 "bro", if a guest is unsatisfied with your product, take it away and give him/her something that is satisfying for the good money they paid you. Plus, what is a half a draft beer to you... pennies on the dollar, to be dumped out and replaced with a good product... especially when you're giving away free beers to cute girls and your friends. I know this place has the luxury of non-stop local traffic due to its location and hundreds of sports games per year. In the end, they won't give two thoughts about my bad review. But I feel bad for Chelios knowing his name is on a restaurant/bar that is run by ignorant, arrogant management. My friends, family, or I will never spend another dime in this place. Way too much competition in the area.

Who'd have thought that the best place to get a vegan dish in metro D was a freakin' sports bar? Well, it's true, and the veggie chili, minus cheese, is good stuff indeed. Hey, you'll even get a free ride to the Joe if you're there on game day! Nice setup, easy CoPa and Ford Field access, and did I mention the fries? The fries are good, man. But I'm easy. A curly fry slut; it's true. Season up your fries and cut them into that curly shape, and I'll positively review the crap out of them. Yeah. Well done, Chris Chelios. You sing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" well (albeit for the wrong team), and you make good chili and fries. Oh, and you're okay at hockey;) Hats off, good sir.

Just really mediocre and unimpressive. Only three types of chilli (regular, chicken, and veggie) and they ran out of veggie. Had a very mediocre grilled cheese and a lukewarm side of mac and cheese. Decent beer list. Nothing special at all. I was expecting much more.

Great place to hang out and meet up with people before an Event downtown. Only seen there limited menu with burgers and fries, Drinks are a little expensive, but the view from the roof and the good times we have there are priceless. Good Times.

There is nothing special about this place other than the fact that it's right next to Comerica, and you can sort of see inside the stadium from the roof. I had to take a long shower after the $4 can of Bud Light I bought. There are plenty of better spots within two blocks of this place.

Good lunch spot especially on non-game day, although I'm sure it's great on game days, too. We are happy with grilled cheese, fried, and wings. Drinks were refilled quickly and staff has always been super friendly.

A great place to go before a game and grab some drinks and the Chelios family's famous chili! And we were fortunate to have a few beers with Cheli himself before we left for the game!

Came here during Memorial Day weekend and food was ok.It was typical bar food quality not great not bad.Service was also typical for this type of place not great but not awful.Overall I would just say this place is a average sports bar.

  • Sharon C.

    (2)

Good place to pregame when coming for a Lions/wings/tigers game. They have standard food and basic drinks as well

    (3)

  • Jessica B.

    (2)

    (4)

    (2)

Disappointed .....dirty, rude and classic case of another bar in town shooting themselves in the foot.

Went for drinks on a Saturday night in June and last call was before 12am, even though there were people at the bar. shoved us out the door by 12. Not great and not close to anything else worthwhile for evening entertainment.

    (3)
  • Chelsea M.

  • Ian G.

Service was slow and food was average. I had the chili bread bowl and the bread was tough and dry. The chili was OK, but it was definitely on the sweet side. Try the chili cheese fries though.

Oh, and you're okay at hockey;) Hats off, good sir.

friendly service, convenient parking and great food. be sure to get here early if there's a game scheduled or you won't get in the door. the green chicken chili is delicious. their burgers are tender and dressed to satisfy. Cheli's is always a fun place to go downtown in the D.

Will not be back. Unprofessional authoritative bouncer. Not quite sure why but the waitress asked us to cash out. Bouncers proceeded to walk us out and ask confrontational. Service was merely ok. And food was so so. I hate to think that this may be a race thing.....

Food was almost as bad as the service. Pastrami tasted like a$$, the bread was soaked in grease and bland. The fries were passable at best. Our server had no idea what was in the quesadilla.... Not much else to day. Will not be back.

Good lunch spot especially on non-game day, although I'm sure it's great on game days, too. We are happy with grilled cheese, fried, and wings. Drinks were refilled quickly and staff has always been super friendly.

I would give this bar 0 stars if I could. Worst bar in detroit I've ever been to. The bouncers are rude and ridiculous and the food couldn't be more disgusting. Don't even bother.

Location is the only thing keeping this place open. Staff sucks, food sucks, prices and drinks aren't anything special. I try to avoid it when I can, but I get sucked in with the crowd occasionally.

Love that they have chicken chili and vegetarian chili that is awesome. Simon at the bar was awesome he kept my water full and was always good to recommend a new drink. Prices were good and the vibe before a Lions game was lots of fun!

This place has the location and the rooftop that you see when you're in the ballpark. Asking about the ball game access though and they say that you can't see the field from there. But still...Rooftop ballpark bar. We had a pleasant stay with the friendly staff during our pub crawl. Nice selection.
