Wonderful quick lunch spot, and excellent for carry-out. Delicious corned beef makes for some amazing Reuben sandwiches, or in my case, the Mazel-Tov (gotta try it!) Their Godfather and Godmother sandwiches are generously portioned, almost to the point of being obnoxious. The kitschy yet cute Penguin-themed adornments add to the experience. Mondays and Wednesdays have great specials on half subs. A decent selection of salads and spreads under the counter as well. Note: almost all sandwiches available as lettuce wraps, lavash wraps, or in a container to-go for those who don't want to sample their delicious breads.

I should have posted this review almost two years ago. I should have sat down and taken 5 minutes to tell the world about this gem of a deli in Dearborn. Instead every time I planned to write about it my thoughts would soon wander and I would become consumed with dreams of corned beef piled high on grilled rye, smothered with fresh creamy coleslaw, drizzled with bright red russian dressing and held together with melted swiss cheese. I'm obsessed, I admit it. I challenge you to go into The Penguin and order a Rueben, add slaw, no kraut and not become obsessed yourself.

Is this really the same deli everyone else reviewed? I expected great quality meats and nice customer service when my husband and I stopped here for lunch. We got crappy sandwiches on dry, tasteless bread and less than stellar service. The employees rushed us to order even though there was no one else in the restaurant. While perusing the menu, the workers scowled at us for no reason and seemed to be fighting with one another in another language while we ate our food. The turkey on my sandwich was very low quality. The best way to describe it would be too wet and tasteless. The cheese had no flavor at all. The crust on Jacob's sandwich was too hard (almost inedible) and the meats on it were boring and forgettable. Jacob and I were so unimpressed with everything they had to offer. I'm positive we won't come back.

A nice little Deli. Good for lunch. I like how they neatly spread the condiments with butter knives. I'm talking about carefully constructed sandwiches here.... made with love. I think they might even cut off the crusts if you asked... I've never asked, but you get the idea. Sandwiches to go... "brown bag" included... thanks mom.

I've driven by Penguina 100 times, and maybe it's because of the Kurkov books, but I have positive associations with penguins, so I finally gave it a try. The parking lot is usually very full at lunch, owing to its own popularity and the lunch deals at the bakery next door. Mondays, the bakery is closed, so there is easier maneuverability in the lot. I tried the California Veggie sandwich. Really you can't evaluate an Italian Deli on its veggie sub (though I did for Alcamo's too). The california veggie consists simply of cucumbers, tomato, lettuce, cheese, and avocado, with honey mustard. The things that did it for me were the bread, which was a round Italian bun, and the big chunks of avocado. I'd say it's on equal footing with the veggie sub from Jimmy John's (not a bad thing at all). But then, the sandwich comes with a nice little pickle, service is way better than the after-school special that is any Jimmy John's, and it is a neighborhood joint, so 4 stars.

Another great Ford/Dearborn lunch spot. On the menu are Sandwiches, Salads and Soup. Equally divided between carry out and dine in traffic, this place gets quite busy at lunch. The best sandwiches are an excellent Muffaletta, Reuben, California Veggie, and the HUGE Diavolo and Godfather subs. The soups and salads are all excellent as well. La Penguina shares a building with the Capri Bakery, so if you want a slice of pizza to go with your sandwich, just stroll in. No wonder foodies love working in Dearborn. It's Michigans yummiest town!

I may not be the best person to review this deli since I've never actually had any of their deli meat, but the sandwiches LOOK great! I have had their tuna salad, garden salad, and chicken noodle soup, which are all yummy! All romaine lettuce...not that iceberg crap! Fruit salad very good and fresh. Chicken salad was just ok. Great prices, fast service.

I have to say this is hands down the BEST deli I have ever been to. I used to be a flight attendant so that is saying alot. The people there are always very friendly, the service is just awsome. The sandwiches are so fresh and delicious! I always order a Marcos Masterpeice and have found nothing that compares to this sandwich anywhere else. If you want a great place to get a sandwich, or sides for a picnic, this is the place!

I visited La Penguina on the recommendation of a co-worker last week and enjoyed it. You can never try too many different deli's or sandwich shops in my mind. La Penguina is a small italian deli that can make a delicious sandwich. I went with their staple, The Godfather, which I do most often when visiting a place for the first time. A warning to first timers, a half should quench most appetites, especially if you are adding chips and a drink. One bonus was the the 24oz pop for the price of a 20oz. Next time we order sandwiches for lunch in the office I think a 4-6 footer from La Penguina will be on the top of the list. It is much more authentic than the other options like Jimmy John's or Pot Belly.

Awesome place for lunch! Prices are very reasonable and the food is great. The wait might be a little longer during peak hours, but the staff is fast and courteous.

There is a reason they have been there for few decades. Amazing food, good proportions and good quality and cheap. A full sandwich ($6) by volume will be probably be one and half times a foot long sob. Half a sandwich ($4) will fill you up. My recommendation --- The Muffuletta. Piled up salami and meat with olive mixture -- The flavor is just amazing. I tried Italian places nearby and this one beats everyone by a mile.

I ordered a muffaletta which is amazing if done right. What I got was a stack of prosciuttio and salami covered in chopped olive salad, lettuce and completely drenched in oily Italian dressing. There was so much dressing that it was impossible to taste anything else. It made the sandwich bun soggy immediately and was so overpowering I couldn't finish the sandwich. Granted it was a massive serving, but the dressing was just too much. Not too impressed. You're far better off going down the street to Alcamo's and getting an amazing sub for a cheaper price.

Always a good place for lunch, it's good, filling, and cheap! The workers are friendly. You can definitely be full after ordering a half-sandwich. They are bigger than those other guys' "footlongs." My favorite is the godfather.
