A truly unique destination. Definitely had to stop here for a beer. (I grew up in the area and was always curious about this run down building that always seemed to be open). Established in 1898, Wolverine Gardens in Glendora, MI is a multi-generation family-owned establishment still in operation - with one beer on tap (and a decent selection in the fridge), the bar mainly serves farmers and residents who live nearby. When we went in, "Maude" was playing on the 16 inch, barely color TV. Why in the world 5-stars to what seems like a total dive? - You have to give respect to any bar that's been open since 1898. - The proprietor, Bob, knew everyone who walked in by name (except me, a first timer here). - Bob and the patrons were all welcoming to me, the stranger, in what was clearly very much a locals spot. - There are a lot of places that try hard to be dives - this place was the real deal. -The interior was covered in funny, and non-politically correct postcards and signs that reminded me if my grandfather's basement when I was a kid. - The building seemed to (almost literally) defy gravity. This will never be a hipster spot; it is far to genuine for irony - it's like stepping into a piece of the past which time has forgotten. hopefully this short, inadequate review and accompanying photos will help to serve as a minor footnote and document of this unique destination.
