Sometimes its the little hole-in-the-wall places that have the best food. York's Best Seafood did not disappoint. My husband and I both got the combo plates. Huge and well worth the $. Our son got a BLT (not a seafood fan) and declared it the best he'd ever had! My favorite was the perfectly cut and battered onion rings. Small and very sweet. Just delicious. The owner, Woody, was so friendly and really made us feel at home. I will definitely be back.

Ordered the fried clam basket after reading a previous review. It had to be the worst fried clams I have ever had. They were very chewy and thick. Even the fried onion rings were thick and too heavily battered. There was only one waitress and one cook. and the waitress got our original order wrong. Would not ever go back to that restaurant. The upside was the waitress was very pleasant. Also the restaurant has a new name called 3 Buoys.

It's under new ownership with a new name (3 Buoys). It was very good before; it's *excellent* now. It's the first time we've had fried food off-season that wasn't a little bit...icky. The fries and rings are nicely and subtly spiced. A Cuban sandwich with swordfish was marvelous. Fried clams: excellent. Glad to have this place to visit.

Ordered clam chowder and believe me when I say that after 35 years of eating clam chowder all over New England I have finally found the absolute worst clam chowder ever! The broth was like dishwater and the clams were fall apart stringy with a smoky flavor. The taste was awful and I could not eat it. The only reason I gave it two stars was because the BLT was decent. Service was so-so. Haven't been here for several years. Always remembered it as being good. I'll be eating somewhere else from now on.

I love York's Best!!! When visiting a friend in Boston, we decided to go to the Freeport Outlets in Maine. We were flipping through the Boston Magazine "Best of Boston" issue and saw this little clam shack so we decided to add that as our lunch trip. It was so delicious! We shared the seafood mix (scallops, haddock, shrimp, clams) over onion straws. We loved it so much that on a separate trip, we came back and had it again. The lobster roll was good. Although it was not as tasty as Neptune's in Boston, it was still delicious (and lighter). If I ever get to the Boston area again I will go for sure.

My wife and I came here last year and planned on making it back here again. We were surprised that there was a new owner. The food only got better. Everything tasted fresh. The new owner added some of his own flare with menu items like swordfish ruben and fish tacos. My wife had the Ruben and it was realllllllly good. I had the oyster plate and the oysters were so tender they melted in my mouth. I will be back next year.

I generally think its kind of cocky when places use terms like "best" in their name. However, I took a chance and stopped in here for lunch on a winter Portsmouth weekend. The guy running the place was extremely friendly. In a way you don't expect anymore in restaurants. He told us how he's been eating clams since he was 5 and how he really does have the best seafood. Also spoke highly of his roast beef. We saw some seafood combo platters on the menu and went with the $20 one. He carefully explained in detail the difference between the sizes and the contents. The food arrived shortly after, piled high. Definitely enough for 2 hungry adults, if not 3. The clams were amazing. There was a decent amount of them too. Scallops were huge. shrimp, haddock..all were great. The difference was in the batter. It had texture and a sweet hint to it. The home made tarter sauce and coleslaw on the side were super. My boyfriend told the guy it was the best clams and tarter sauce he's ever had. Even the onion rings were well done, thinly cut and fully battered. The guy returned again to check on us. He saw we were killing all the seafood on the plate and chatted us up about where we were from. He is very passionate about his business. The joint is like a shack. Since it was winter, they had plastic over the windows for insulation. Still the restaurant was large enough to offer a large dining room with vintage appeal. This was good seafood, I'll be back in the summer to take it to the beach.

A peppery, fairly creamy seafood chowder with large pieces of potato.

This was the last stop on a 10 restaurant motorcycle tour of lobster roll eateries in the late summer of '07. I wanted to stay off of I-95 and was stuck in traffic on Rte. 1 and decided to try this place. I was idling in front of it for 10 minutes and getting nowhere fast. Too many outlet shoppers to the south. Disappointment! Food was not good. Setting was sad- next to idling cars with a view of the interstate. It was a bummer that I had to spend the last few hours of a great trip on death watch from some suspect seafood. Not York's best! The image I posted says that Boston Magazine liked them, but that doesn't fact check with The Googler.

I am not a lover of fried food, but I can happily eat a plate of the clams and sweet potato fries at Yorks best. They seem to get it just right every time, crispy but not at all oily. They use soybean oil to help with cholesterol, so that takes care of the guilt a bit. Also LOVE their Clam chowder!!! Instead of just tasting heavy cream and potatoes, you can taste other subtle flavors like celery and a creaminess that does not feel heavy. If the food is not a good enough reason, I think the owners definitely are. He and his wife are super friendly and seem to think of all the details in even a simple menu. They have owned this place for years, but somehow have maintained their enthusiasm and charm. I agree with the previous reviewer that using "best" in a name is a bit cocky, but these folks seem to deserve to use it.

3 things that I love, but which almost always disappoint wherever I go: Fried Clams, Onion Rings, and Crab Rolls. I've never been to York before, so I can't speak from depth of experience, but I feasted on fried clams, onion rings and crab rolls at York's Best today, and they were absolutely delicious! I sampled the burgers as well, and they had excellent flavor. (Apparently the beef is specially selected and ground on premises, clearly by someone who appreciates a good basic burger.) And the chocolate shake was very satisfying, too. The food was brought to our table soon after we ordered (given that it's not fast food--everything is cooked fresh to order). Service was notable not only for efficiency but also for genuine warmth and friendliness. We definitely look forward to going back soon when we can!

Everyone has different taste but to me this restaurant is aptly named. The clams are the best I have ever had and I've had plenty. The place is what it says it is a clam shack and Yorks best but I will go further and say it is Maine's best. I will keep going back here as long as they are here.
